Dustin May flirts with history again with another dominant performance this time against the San Diego Padres.
This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are Locked on Cardinals.
Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans.
I'm J.D. Hafford.
And on today's show, we've got a special 10th anniversary segment to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Locktown Podcast Network, your team every day.
but we're going to lead off with the obvious biggest story that's going on with the Cardinals right now.
Dustin May's incredible performance against the San Diego Padres on Monday night,
a complete game shutout, which was just two blemishes away from being a perfect game.
It was insane.
For six innings, the dude made no mistakes.
He was perfect, 18 up, 18 down.
And all the while, the pitch count remained low because you had the Padres who were very, very, very,
very aggressive, very aggressive in their bats, which was working out perfectly for a team that, you know,
genuinely needed a night off from their bullpen after all the damage that was done against them in
Minnesota, who, by the way, hit two more dingers off the Texas Rangers. So it wasn't just the
Cardinals that they're blasting right now. They're kind of hitting everybody, Byron Bucks and hit another
one. He's just on fire. So at least that's what I'm going to tell myself is that, hey, you know,
everybody's getting hit by him. Um, the, the two blemishes.
the lead off walk to Fernando Tattees Jr.
In that seventh inning, that ended the perfect game.
Then one batter later, later it was Mani Machado,
who rolled one through that hole between short and third base.
I made the joke that, you know,
if Nolan Gorman was playing third base,
he probably would have got that.
But I know, I know.
Everybody's like, shut up.
I know.
It was a joke.
He was supposed to get that reaction.
Anyway, that one makes it through the hole.
That ends the no hitter.
And the crowd at Bush Stadium gives him his ovation.
after both which he so richly deserved.
But as much of a bummer as it was to see those opportunities to go for the perfect game,
to go for the no-hitter.
And, you know, there was still a ball game.
There was still a ball game to win here because the score was only three to nothing.
And now you got two on and one out with the tying run at the plate.
And I can't be the only one that was starting to have a little PTSD thinking back to his no-hit bid
against the Milwaukee Brewers.
They quickly turned into a loss in that eighth inning.
I mean, he's cruising right along.
all of a sudden a couple of a hit and a couple of screw ups and bang,
cardinals are losing. They lose the game. So we didn't want another tragic turn of events like
that. But May induces the ground ball in your gold glover, shortstop Mason win,
tip care of the rest, a beautiful six three double play that was very Ozzy Smith-esque
with his run to the bag and throwing in one motion, just a rocket over to Burley at first that just
nips, gab and cheats strikes out the side of the eighth inning. And then in the ninth inning,
it's a line out, a flyout, and then he gets Fernando Tatis Jr. to whiff to end it. Absolutely
brilliant stuff. The final line for one, Dustin May on Monday night, nine endings, no runs,
one hit, one walk, nine strikeouts on 101 pitches. It was just what the doctor ordered, man,
for a worn-out bullpen and for a guy who has had so much trouble, staying healthy with the arm
surgeries and the freak injury with his throat last year.
You know, it has not been easy for Dustin May.
And to see it all come together on Monday and what was his greatest game as a major
league pitcher, just awesome to witness.
It was fantastic.
And yeah, the Padres aren't having the best year offensively that many predicted.
But that's still a lineup that has Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill,
Manny Machado, Gavin Sheets, Zander Bogartz.
those are their top guys right there.
They're all in the lineup.
Hell, they just took two or three from Baltimore
and had a five home run barrage on Saturday.
So let's not take away from how good Dustin May had to be
to do what he did on Monday night,
even though the Padres had the lowest batting average in the league.
They got the lowest OPS in the league.
But still a respectable lineup,
a lineup that is still good enough to have them in playoff contention.
and especially in this day and age where starters go shorter,
bullpins are relied on a whole lot more.
Like it was special.
It was absolutely special.
There had only been eight complete games all season.
Only eight them.
Now there's nine after Dustin May's performance.
And it just doesn't happen anymore.
And I know we get a lot of comments about Ali pulling guys early.
And why are these guys only throwing five innings and stuff anymore?
And it's because usually, like I mentioned in yesterday's episode, like either they're not doing very well by the time they get pulled or they're at a pitch count that the Cardinals have deemed as kind of that sweet spot where, look, if we push them past this much, we really risk doing injuries later on down the line.
And so instead of doing that, they rely on the bullpen a little bit more.
Sure, we could use better bullpen pieces if we're going to be doing it this way.
but it's a work in progress. Remember, this is a rebuild season.
As good as things are going, it's still a rebuild season.
We're still figuring crap out.
We don't have all the answers yet.
Nobody knows.
We're just kind of going with the flow, trying to figure it all out.
But incredible stuff from Dustin May.
I got a bunch of fun stats about this particular performance that I want to share with you guys here in just a minute.
Plus, you're going to hear what.
But Ali Marmel, Dustin May, and catcher Jimmy Crooks had to say about the game on Monday night.
We'll get to all of that coming up on Locked on Cardinals.
It's amazing how quickly we've moved away from cash and checks.
Like how many times do you use checks anymore?
My father-in-law still writes them from time at time.
And I was like, bro, why do you do that?
But, you know, whether it's like between friends, paying them back, buying tickets, splitting a bill,
everything happens instantly now.
It has to be now, right?
and being able to send someone money instantly,
it's one of those things that's become so normal
that you forget how much easier it makes everyday life.
It's how you pay your rent.
It's how you pay your bills.
Cash app can do way more than just do that.
You think to make your money work for you,
you've got to go through some complicated process.

So let's go into some of these cool little stats about last night's game.
Some fun stuff.
This is the first time this season that a Cardinal starter had recorded an out in the eighth inning.
Again, starters, just don't go long anymore.
With pitch counts and the reliance on bullpins these days, guys just aren't built to do it anymore.
They want them throwing 100 miles an hour.
They want them doing it for five innings and getting the hell out of the way so the bullpen can come in.
So you just don't see it very often.
So first time a Cardinal starter has recorded an out in the eighth inning, impressive stuff.
Because remember, Dustin May was in the eighth inning against the Brewers, and that's when all hell broke loose.
He became the second and they'll be started this season to twice, take no hit bids into the seventh inning.
The only other person to do that so far is the Pirates Paul Skeens.
The last pitcher to throw a one hit shutout for the Cardinals at home,
Jaime Garcia, more than 10 years ago against Milwaukee,
a fun name that we don't hear much anymore.
Remember, Jaime was, you know, for a couple of years there.
He was pretty freaking good.
And then it all kind of fell apart and the career was over.
But Jaime Garcia, look at that.
The only other pitchers to have a similar game,
you had Adam Wainwright in 2014,
against Arizona and then Shelby Miller in 2013 against Colorado.
And my everydayers, you probably know this already.
But behind me, let me get my finger right there.
You see those spikes that are behind me in the video here?
Those are signed by Shelby Miller.
In case you were wondering, I got those at spring training a million moons ago.
My mom bought them for me.
We went out for spring training.
and they had like the auctions and stuff.
And then they had the buy now ability.
And she was like, let's just get them.
Let's just get them.
And I think they were like 300 bucks, which wasn't that bad.
But we were hoping Shelby would turn out to be a bigger piece of the puzzle for the Cardinals moving on down the road.
And yeah, that didn't happen.
Dustin made side of season high with nine strikeouts in this game and now has three nine strikeout performances and his last four starts.
All right.
starting with his near no-no in that May 27th game against Milwaukee.
Over the last four starts, Dustimea has allowed only four earned runs over 27 and
two-thirds innings.
That's an area of 1.30.
He has given up just 12 hits, walked four, and struck out 33 over that span.
He's getting stronger.
He's getting better.
He's more comfortable.
And it makes you wonder, like, how good his numbers might be.
if he didn't have those two really ugly performances to start the season.
It's the first shutout by a Cardinal starter since Sunny Gray on June 27, 2025.
And he became the first Cardinal to throw a shutout at Bush Stadium since Miles
Michaelis accomplished defeat on July 15th, 2019.
Miles, by the way, real quick note, Miles, by the way, 11 and two-thirds shutout
innings over his last two starts.
All right, out of boy, Lizard King.
The game right before that, though, he gave up back-to-back-to-back home run.
So, you know, there's still the micliss moments.
How about some audio?
Here's manager, Ali Marmal, talking about his thoughts on what went down on Monday night in Bush, in St. Louis at Bush.
Man, that was impressive, especially coming off the last series for him to be on point.
And I just love the way he competes.
I mean, you look at him out there in every pitch means something to him.
and it's contagious because you look at the defense behind him
and what Mason was able to do on a couple of those plays
and the way he came into the dugout,
there's this determination in his eyes of like,
I'm going to do everything possible to keep this as a shutout.
Like it was just, it's impressive.
I was a hell of an outing.
Yeah, he had everything working, man.
He was effective, efficient.
He was just filling up the zone.
He had some really defensive swings on that cutter.
but he knew he was on point and it showed.
Yeah.
And so I went and looked up the stats while Ali was talking there.
Dustin May, if you take away those first two starts of the season,
it would now be five and four.
The team is seven and five in his 12 starts.
And he would have an ERA of 2.5, 64, 68 strikeouts,
and 74 in a third innings.
So he's been excellent, absolutely what they needed when they signed him,
this year. And it was always about health, right? It wasn't like that people thought Dustin
May couldn't pitch or that there was an issue with him pitching. It was just, how do we keep
on the field? And so far, the Cardinals have been able to do that. Here's some audio from
Dustin May talking about the performance. Yeah, it was great. Great team one. It definitely got better
throughout the game. At the start, I definitely thought that it was not super great. But then I kind of
settled in and started to fill my legs a little bit more together. It's fun. They've definitely
rejuvenated a lot more spark in me than I initially thought that I had.
Yeah, it's been fantastic.
Couldn't ask for a better ball.
Yeah, no, that was the cool part.
Just being able to walk out on the ninth,
knowing that these last three outs is going to close a book.
So I went out there and executed and got it on.
All right.
And then, you know, we forget sometimes about the importance of the catcher in games like this.
When these types of performances happen,
And you're like, all right, all of the attention kind of goes to the pitcher.
But let's not forget about our catcher that was behind the plate on Monday night.
Jimmy Crooks had a great night, not only behind the dish, but also at the plate,
had that two out, two run devil to give the Cardinals the lead in the first place.
So here's some of Jimmy Crook's thoughts on what went down on Monday night at Bush Stadium.
Definitely receiving for sure.
As a catcher, you got to be a leader behind the plate.
And, you know, it's very exciting to save our bullpen a little bit.
You know, D-May was awesome.
Like I said, he panned the corners, and it was just great.
How good is it true in double, though, it feels too?
It feels great, too.
I know I got some unfortunate luck the past couple weeks doing that,
but, you know, I found some grass finally.
We were hiding most of the strikeout stuff.
You know, they were getting in and out at one or two pitches,
so, like, it was kind of easy selling from right there,
like just getting the one, two, three outs,
and then right at the end,
that's where we started to get the punchies
and just using the strikeout stuff.
At what point do you notice something is special about the night?
Do you know it's in the first inning or is it as the game goes along?
Definitely as the game goes along.
I mean, the first three outs were excited for sure.
Like he got in and out.
But, you know, as the fourth, fifth inning progressed,
I was like, oh, he's on tonight.
He's feeling good, feeling saucy, and then just getting after it.
He shows a lot of emotion and fire coming off the mound.
How is that, you know, just throughout the game?
And how does he sort of harness that?
Because clearly he controls that, at least he seems like.
No, he does for sure.
You know, it's definitely excited to see him get really pumped up after an inning.
or after he punches out a couple of guys during the inning, too.
So it definitely sets fire to the offense as well going through that second half of the inning.
Yeah, and that's something that I've brought up about Dustin May,
just about every appearance that he's had is that I just love the fire that he brings to the mound.
You know, a lot of times pitchers are a little more calm.
And then you get those certain guys that show a lot of energy.
You know, Lance Lynn was one of those guys that shows.
was a lot of a lot of attitude on the mound.
You know, Carlos Martinez used to do that.
Chris Carpenter used to do that.
You know, there are certain guys that just have that mentality
where they're like, yeah, they just can't help it.
And then you got guys like Michael McGreevy who doesn't make any sort of gesture or anything.
He's just very smooth out there the whole time.
Different strokes for different folks.
But I love Dustin Mace Fire.
I think it's great.
This was the second shutout for Crooks.
And only seven starts behind the plate of the season.
he also caught the combined shutout start by May against the Mets on June 9th in New York.
Cardinals' offense took a back seat to what Dustin May was doing, but they still played at three
runs on eight hits.
Jordan Walker, Lars Neupar, Mason, Wynne, each had a couple of hits, six of the hits in the game,
and barely extended his hitting streak to 15 with that RBI double in the fifth inning.
This was the first time in 12 games.
The Cardinals failed to score at least four runs, but it was enough to get the win,
and that's really all that matters.
but a special night for Dustin May and a special night for the Cardinals.
So tip of the cap to them.
That was a lot of fun to watch.
And I'm an offensive guy.
Like I like watching more offense than I do that.
But that was cool to watch last night.
I enjoyed that.
Up next, more stuff that I enjoy, a special 10th anniversary segment,
my top 10 cardinal moments while I've been alive.
And while I've been around things that I've witnessed or been in attendance to see,
or watched on TV at the very least.
So we're going to get into that list coming up next on Locked on Cardinals.
Throughout the NHL finals, every shift mattered, right?
You know, every moment was super intense and everything came down to execution.
And it was the Carolina Hurricanes who ended up being the guys that did it more times than not.
So they got the win.
And when the pressure was at its highest, it was Carolina that showed up.
And just like athletes must be ready to perform when the puck drops.
A lot of guys want that same sense of readiness and confidence.
in their own lives. That's where Rougiette comes in. Rougiette offers modern performance
focused treatments designed to help you be ready when it matters. Their top option is called
Ruggiet ready. It's a fast acting clinically formulated treatment that comes in a very simple

Thanks again for making Lockton.
Carlos, your first listen of the day.
Thank you for making Locktown on the number one sports podcast network.
And thank you for 10 years of being an everydayer or just popping in and out.
Whenever you came in to the Lockdown podcast network, as a listener, as a fan, we appreciate
you.
and in honor of the Lockdown Podcast Network turning 10 years old today,
we were asked to put together something that related to our teams,
related to our shows, and use the number 10.
So I went with, because I have been a Cardinals fan,
I always pay attention to them, like constantly.
Like it's what I was born to do.
You know, my parents were huge Cardinal fans still are.
and they just like we went to a lot of games.
We watched a lot of games.
It was just something we always did.
Baseball was number one in our household.
So I came up with my top 10 moments as a Cardinals fan that these are moments either I was there and I was in attendance at the game,
witnessed live in person or was watching on the boob tube with a bunch of people and the moment just kind of stuck with me in my head.
So number 10, I'm going to go with the brawl in Cincinnati.
I was there when the Brandon Phillips, the out of year,
Alina Braw took place.
It was on the third base side.
I remember all of this.
It was on the third base side.
And I had never seen anything like it before.
When it all broke out, you're just like, oh, my gosh, because you just start seeing a mob of people.
Like, you know, in high school, you see fights, brigad of parties and stuff.
That's what it looked like.
It was chaos.
Bodies everywhere.
They go push up against the backstab.
The crowd was going nuts.
They were loving it because we're crazy people.
And it really sparked a major rivalry between.
the two teams for quite some time. And it's like strange that I ended up marrying a Cincinnati
Reds fan after that's what happened. I suppose that's better than a Cubs fan, right? Number nine,
Mark McGuire's chase for Maris. Now, the summer of 1998 was just insane in St. Louis.
Must see TV despite the fact that the Cardinals weren't even very good that year. Remember,
they finished 83 and 79. It wasn't a great year for the team. Third place finished in the division,
I believe, but I still, I remember, like, you know, you had to watch it.
You had to see if McGuire was going to go yard again.
And there are still nights to the day where I will flip on old videos and old clips from
YouTube and watch these full games from when Big Mac was a Cardinal.
There's lists of them where, like, Big Mac's first game was a Cardinal after the trade was
made and stuff.
And you can go watch this stuff still on YouTube.
And it's just insane.
the just the energy that he brought to every ballpark again on a team that wasn't very good
and there's a soft spot I know that steroids are bad I get that but Mark McGuire was fun to watch
and he was kind enough to sign a baseball for my mom for I think it was for a birthday
the following year in 1999 so big Mac's cool in my book number eight
Demetri Young's two-run triple against the Braves in the 1996 NLCS I was
there with my mom at the game. My dad had to work that night. So me and my mom went to the game.
It was the only year that we had bought season tickets. We had bought a shared season ticket package
with my good friend Keith and his family. And we were in left field, a couple sections over from
the foul pole. And I'd never heard Bush Stadium so loud up to that point. This was the first time
that it was just like deafening at Bush Stadium. And Dimitri Young hits that.
triple and the run score and you're now one went away from the world series and they ended up
blowing the three to one series lead after that night up on the Braves and we had world series
tickets at home they had already shipped them to you and we had them in their little thing there you got
to tear them apart and uh we had them the sheet and it didn't happen it was such a bummer
but that night was freaking awesome uh number seven the Aussie Smith retirement
day same year, 1996, Ozzie Smith, my favorite player growing up.
And to be there on that day when they did his whole ceremony, when he was saying goodbye
as a player, that was very special to me.
It was the first time, like a hero of mine had retired and was going away.
And that was tough.
It was weird as a kid to see him and be like, I'm never going to get to see him anymore.
But at the same time, you know, it was cool.
Like, I have that memory of.
them with the whole ceremony out on the field and stuff.
So that will always stick with me.
Number six, Yaddy and Wayno, finishing off the Mets in 06.
I was working a bar promotion with the radio station I was working with at the time.
And I remember we were with the Miller Light Girls because, of course, I'm going to remember that.
But we were working in Peoria, Illinois at the time, which was mostly at Cubs Town,
from what I remember.
But plenty of Cardinal fans were out that night.
And when Yaddi's ball left the yard, the place went bonkers.
And then Waino with the curve ball to Carlos Beltron, fall off the table,
curveball, just icing on the cake.
And it kind of gave birth to the Yadi-Waino combination that we would see lead this
team for what, the next 17 years.
So that will always stick with me.
Number five, Jim Edmonds walk off Dinger against the Astros in the 12th inning of 2004.
Jimmy ballgame. God, he had a flare for the dramatics, whether it was with the defense or with the bat.
And I remember watching this game on TV. And as soon as he hit it and he did the fish shake after he popped it, you knew it was over.
The place goes bonkers and they end up winning in seven only to fall in the World Series to Boston.
But that series was awesome. That team was awesome in 2004. One of the best teams I've ever seen that ended up not winning the World Series. A real shame there.
Number four, David Eckstein, Walkoff Grand Slam against Atlanta in 2005.
So my whole family was at Bush Stadium that day.
We do this whole, and most families do this where you celebrate that month's birthdays.
Instead of doing it one day at a time, you gather everybody for the month who has birthdays in August.
And we had everybody out and we all went to the ballgame together.
And we're celebrating the August birthdays.
We're in right field.
My birthday is in August.
My dad's birthday is in August.
Cousin, like a bunch of us.
There's like seven of us that have birthdays in August.
And we're in right field.
And there's not a whole lot to clap about in this game until this happens.
And David Eckstein hits that walk off grand slam, little David Eckstein.
And my dad openly wept when it happened.
Like he was so happy that he was tears of joy.
And I was like, are you crying?
And it was just, it was fun.
It was, you know, and my dad was like, you know, that's why I love this sport.
And even the littlest guy can be the here.
And that has always stuck with me, a super cool dad moment right there.
And it was the most unlikely hero in David Eckstein that ends up hitting that walk off grand slam against Atlanta.
Number three, Albert Poolehold's three home run game in the World Series against the Rangers, 2011.
I'm working at a Halloween broadcast at this point in my career.
And when this game is going on, I remember we're out at this place because it's at a Halloween place that's like out of the middle of nowhere,
because it's one of those that has like,
hey, we've got four different attractions that you can go to
and there's like a haunted field and all this stuff.
And we didn't have very good service out there.
And I'm trying to keep up with it on my phone.
And it seemed like every time I look down,
Albert was doing something incredible.
And I remember I'm hitting that third home run when I was driving back.
I was in the car, driving back home.
And he pops his third one of the game.
He finishes five for six in the game, three dingers, six ribbies.
and the Cardinals absolutely wiped the floor with the Texas Rangers in game three in Texas, 16 to 7.
Didn't see a second of this game.
Watched highlights when I got home.
But I remember hearing it in the car and just the reactions.
And sometimes, you know, you listen to the radio broadcast and your imagination is actually better than what you see on TV.
And that was one of those moments that stuck with me.
Number two also involves Albert.
Game, what was that game five?
game five, 2005 in LCS off Bradledge.
I'm doing a night show and I'm in Peoria, Illinois again at this time.
And me and the only other guy in the building is my buddy Robert,
who was monitoring another station.
But both of us are Cardinal fans in this Cubs Town.
And we're watching it at our studios thinking the boys were done.
It's toast.
Brad Lidge is in.
Good season.
It was fun.
And when Albert launched that home run over the tracks in left field,
like we both, you both hear both of us screen.
on the other side of the wall from each other.
And I just remember how loud it was in Houston at that point
and how it just went creepy silence, just whoosh.
This hush goes over the crowd.
And although the Cardinals ended up losing the series,
most people remember that home run more than anything else
that happened in that series, particularly if you're a Cardinals fan.
And then number one, David freezes heroics in Game 6, 2011.
My buddies and I are at another bar for the game,
but we are also taking part in this tournament in a game called battle shots,
where it's like the game battleship that you played when you were younger,
but instead of putting a marker in a little hole,
when your ship got hit, you have to take a shot instead.
Your ship had shot glasses in it and you had to drink them every time you got hit,
so you got sink.
So we took a bunch of shots.
And when it got down to the finals of this tournament,
it was just me and my buddy Sean.
That's all that was left.
We were in the finals together.
We had beaten everybody else.
And we're in the ninth inning here.
We're trying to play this game still.
Cardinals are down seven to five.
And we both go, timeout.
Let's watch this legit because, you know, I got to watch.
I got to see my team lose.
And I got to watch the Rangers win it on my team's field at Bush again.
But then it all starts happening.
You know, you get the pool holes double.
And then you get Berkman who walks.
And then you get freeze with the triple over cruises at in right field.
And we're tied.
And we're like, oh, my God.
did that just happen?
And so we called off the rest of the game.
No more battle shots.
We're done.
Split the winnings with my buddy Sean.
And we watched the final couple of innings.
You get Josh Hamilton,
who I loved as a player.
I know it was off the field things were an issue,
but loved him as a player when he was during,
during his prime with the Rangers.
He hits that home run and it kind of had me second guessing my decision
about whether or not I should have continued playing battle shots instead.
But then you get Berkman again comes through to tied in the 10th inning
and then the 11th inning, freeze goes yard to center field.
Absolutely unreal.
So I will always remember that as well.
And I had a lot of other moments in consideration here,
but I was pretty little for a lot of those like John Tudor's 20th win.
I remember being with my dad and the bleachers,
but cold out when he did it.
Jack Clark and Ozzie homering off Tom Need and fewer.
Carps complete game upset went over the Phillies,
beating the Tigers and the Rangers in the World Series to win them.
Poo holes his run to 700.
I got to see him, you know, hit a couple of those home runs.
Tommy, her seat cushion night.
I remember being in my living room watching it and my uncle calling.
He goes, it would be great if Tommy just hit a walk off here and we could all just, you know, end it.
And that's exactly what he did.
The heat is on team of 1985.
I remember the poster being on my wall as a kid.
The blown call against the Royals in 1985.
So a lot of other moments, but a lot of really cool moments in Cardinals history.
And I love the fact that we're starting to make more positive ones.
again this year in 2026.
All right.
