Cardinals take care of the Washington Nationals on Thursday night. Final score of that one, 8-1 was the final. Very impressive, happy vibes, ugly shirt, engaged.
Starting point is 00:01:05 I made the joke on Twitter last night, and it kind of got an interesting response from Cardinals fans because, so I said, where do people line up to apologize to Miles Michaelis asking for a friend? And the joke was about me, that I was the one that needed to line up to say, I'm sorry to the Miles Michaelis. I wasn't expecting other people to feel bad or to be apologizing for anything they've said about the Cardinals pitcher. But it didn't stop people from responding to it.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Man, oh man, did I? Some people got hot. They got hot about this one. Some of the responses here. One good game doesn't help me forget the last couple of seasons. I just picture everybody writing this stuff to me just with anger and just not. happy whatsoever. I won't be apologizing. Still doesn't change his poor performance this season. There is no way this guy will ever be good enough to make us World Series contenders.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Pump the brakes. It's one start against the hapless nationals. Sure, he pitched a great game, but that doesn't absolve him of his horrendous last few starts. One good game against a below-average team does not mean the Cardinals can count on him. And a lot of people, and it just kept coming. Like, they just kept pouring in. And there were other people, I mean, there were some positive people, too, that, but those weren't the ones that were funny. Those were the ones that stood out to me. You know, a lot of people kept responding with, well, hold on. Let's, let's see some more from him first. Not quite there yet. But I think most of you understood the joke. You understood the joke because we have pounded on Miles Michaelis, like the rest of the hitters in Major League
Starting point is 00:03:07 Baseball have over the last three seasons, where Miles' production has tapered off considerably from the All-Star days when he was just coming over from overseas. And I'm going to probably do the same thing if Fetty goes out and pitches well on Saturday, because we've been crushing him for not being very good. And that's part of this whole thing. When you're a professional athlete and you don't perform well, people are going to destroy you. And you got to have thick skin and get through it.
Starting point is 00:03:42 And it's not that I want to see these guys fail. I don't. I want to see Miles Michaels throw a no-hitter every game the rest of the year. I would love it. Same for Eric Fetty. Like, I want to see them succeed. I have seen them succeed. But recently it's been really, really tough.
Starting point is 00:03:59 But Eric Fetty, in case you haven't heard, is going to be pitching on Saturday against the Braves and not Michael McGreevy, which has triggered some people as well. But I want to focus on Michaelis for now and what happened on Thursday because that's the real story here. Miles Michaelis, after getting blistered in Wrigley in his last outing, came out, shut down Washington for five and two-thirds innings. And these are the same nationals who just put eight on you the night before. So saying that it's only the nationals, that's irrelevant. I don't care if it's the Rockies, the White Sox, or any of these other teams that has been offensively challenged this year, you shut out a major league baseball team. You deserve some credit for it because it doesn't happen all that often. Pirates are one of the worst run scoring teams in baseball.
Starting point is 00:04:47 Look what they just did in the Cardinals recently. I mean, these are major league teams. These are major league players. Some have better ones than others. But you still have to go out there and get it done. and every game is different. And Michaelis gave the Cardinals an excellent start on Thursday. And they took advantage of it.
Starting point is 00:05:04 They win the series. Their first series went in the month of July. So that should be applied. All right. Good job. Excellent job. After the game, Miles was pretty happy with things. It felt pretty good.
Starting point is 00:05:14 After last game, after that third inning, I kind of figured out what I was doing wrong and fixed it. Went from there and just went out and pitched my game. And the third inning, Michael is through, or after the third inning. after the third inning in Chicago. What he's talking about here was that, you know, he threw three shutout innings against Chicago after that.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Remember everybody's like, I can't believe he made it six innings. Well, that's because he was pretty good after the first three innings. One, two shabby, but the damage had already been done. But three there, five and two thirds innings here. That's eight and two thirds innings because I am mathematically awesome. You'll take that, right? You'll take that. And we all know what Miles is.
Starting point is 00:05:57 You know, we've seen it plenty over his tenure with the Cardinals. There's a lot of strikes. Does not have overwhelming stuff. Doesn't strike out a ton of people, doesn't walk a lot of people, has got to hit his spots or else he's going to get hit hard. And if he was tipping things, which is what I think everybody thought he was doing in Chicago, then that's going to make more sense as to why he was getting hit even harder than normal. because it's not like every pitch that got hit over the Ivy was like, you know, his 92 mile an hour fastball right down the middle.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Like some of them weren't that bad of pitches. And the Cubs were just teeing off. They were hitting everything hard. So after the game, Ollie said Michael said everything working. He stayed out of the middle. I thought he mixed well enough to keep them off balance. We needed it. We talked enough about it and we needed him to have a bounce back type of an outing.
Starting point is 00:06:50 And that's exactly what he did. So no, you do not have to apologize to Miles Michaelis. I'll do it for everybody. I'll take the bullet on this one. You don't have to apologize to him. After the game in Chicago, you bashed him. I bashed him. Most of the nation who paid attention was like, oh, my God, this guy's terrible.
Starting point is 00:07:12 And you can continue if you want to, to request that he be released or traded or whatever you want done. and you want the Cardinals to put in somebody else better in his spot because they should. You know, I fully agree with that. We should be better than Miles Michaelis. Like you would want better. I'd be ashamed of you if you didn't want to improve on what you have already. That would be lame. But that's probably not going to happen until after the season anyway and after his contract is up.
Starting point is 00:07:43 So we're going to ride with the Lizard King, who, to his credit, did his job very, very well last night. So I applaud you, Miles Michaelis. The offense also came to play. We'll discuss them coming up next on Locked on Cardinals. Have you ever decided at the last minute that, hey, you know what? Let's go to the ball game. Friends, family, let's go. Let's get in the minivan.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Let's roll. It's game day. Suddenly you want to be in the stands. Maybe you want to go see the Braves tonight. That's exactly where game time comes in. Starting point is 00:09:33 Thanks again for making locks on Cardinals. Your first listen every day. Leave your comments on YouTube as well as on X anytime you want. Feedback, always welcome and encourage good or bad. Love hearing from you. Love that you're paying attention and interacting with the show. That's super awesome of you. The Cardinals' offense got back into gear on Thursday,
Starting point is 00:09:51 putting up eight runs on 10 hits, which was certainly a sight for sore eyes after getting. humbled by McKinsey Gore the night before and now, can we at least acknowledge, I know we love to say every time that the Cardinals get shut down, that they suck, they cannot do this or that. They're terrible at baseball. This team is awful. I know we love to harp on them and get all crazy about things, but can we at least acknowledge the fact that despite his record, McKinsey Gore is a pretty freaking good pitcher. Pretty good. He is going to the All-Star. game for a reason. And I know it sucks watching the Cardinals strike out over and over and just
Starting point is 00:10:31 look terrible at the plate, especially against left-handers. But good pitching, it beats good hitting a lot, right? Normally that's the case. So it really wasn't all that surprising that the Cardinal would come out and struggle against an all-star left-handed pitcher like McKinsey Gore. Even though they beat them once already this year, it did not shock me. That that is what happened. I warned you, if you listened to the show before a Thursday's, or Wednesday's game, that I warned you that I would expect some swinging messes tonight. Probably not going to look great. But it's why I didn't get all been out of shape about it. You know, we didn't really talk about that game all that much because there wasn't a whole lot
Starting point is 00:11:19 to talk about. The offense wasn't there because Gore was good. Andre Palante was bad and got after a really bad start and that was that. Like, there wasn't a whole lot to dissect in that particular game. There was all that interesting. So I was hoping for a return to normalcy for Thursday night's game against Michael Soroka, right-hander, which is great. Cardinals actually do better against righties and lefties. And that's what we got.
Starting point is 00:11:45 You know, the Cardinals hit righties better and seeing them have more success with Soroka on the mound, again, not all that surprising, but they have. it was still nice to see it happen. We can theorize that it's supposed to happen, but until it actually manifests itself on the field, you don't know. You don't know. But it was nice.
Starting point is 00:12:07 You know, they got to string some hits together. But one thing that also stood out to me was the nice situational hitting at bats. It's something that I complain about a lot. And I know it's easier said than done. But I just feel like in the last month, I've seen a lot of pop-ups and strikeouts and weak ground balls to the wrong side of the end field that have cost the Cardinals some runs recently, like just where ending should have been better than they were. Earlier in the year, you weren't seeing that happen all that often. You were seeing the Cardinals thrive in those moments.
Starting point is 00:12:43 And at least to me, it seems like it tailed off a bit. I don't have any stats that prove it, but just naked eye watching the games each day, it felt like I wasn't seeing the same. good approaches and the same productive at bats in certain situations. That was out the window in this one. They did it against Washington. First inning, you get the single, the double, and then you get the ground out to get the run in. Excellent job by Alec Berlus.
Starting point is 00:13:09 And third inning, another lead off single by Donnie, moved to second on a wild pitch, which wasn't really all that wild. It was blocked, went in front of the play, but Donnie read it well, great base running, got a good jump, take second base, and then Burley follows up with an RBI single to center field just like that two to nothing none of it is sexy but it's efficient and it's the stuff like this that the cardinals have to do to win baseball games they're not usually going to outslug people you know it's just not their thing that's not who they are they don't have a bunch of superstars
Starting point is 00:13:43 running around that you know scare people they got to do little things they continued it sixth inning perfect example of timely hitting man manufacturing runs and doing it without the long ball, which is how this offense lives more times than not. Willie singles against the shift, you know, does a good job, puts it in play, finds the hole to the right side. Newt hits the ground road double, which was smoked. Credit to Newt there.
Starting point is 00:14:10 Aronado singles to right field as well makes it through to nothing, just really good pieces of hitting by those guys, not trying to pull things on the outside part of the plate. Gorman walks, which was nice to see because he's even striking out of a lot, the last couple of games too. So I hope he's not getting the case of the whiffs again. But he takes a walk there, keeps things rolling. Pozo gets some luck when Abrams whiffs on that ground ball to short.
Starting point is 00:14:35 Still not sure how that's a single, but okay. Makes it four to nothing. And then you get two at-bats by Victor Scott and Donnie again. And they're productive at bats. They don't get hits, but they are productive at-bats to bring in two more runs and make it six-to-nothing. You know, Victor hit his pretty well, nice played first. base there. Donnie gets the sack fly. Then you got Victor swiping second base. Love watching them run, as always. And then a big two out two strike double by Mason win to bring him in easily.
Starting point is 00:15:05 It's seven to nothing and the boys are rolling. Nute's double really was the only, if you want to say ringing hit in the inning or where it was like, whoa, he got a hold of that one. Everything else just kind of found spots. You know, Mason Wins double was hit well as well. But you know what I'm saying, though. It wasn't like they were just shooting bombs off the, you know, the wall and the outfield. They're plugging a bunch of gaps or anything. They were just finding the holes and putting the ball in play. And it got the job done. I love watching baseball like that. That's the stuff that teams who don't have superstars and, you know, are loaded with three or four sluggers in their lineups that are going to hit 25 to 35 home runs. This is what they have to do. And I always go,
Starting point is 00:15:52 back to the Toronto Blue Jays series. And if you remember this, the Toronto Blue Jays were playing good. And they came in and just annoyed the hell out of the Cardinals and their pitching staff. They took good at bats, smart at bats. They didn't strike out a lot. They kept putting the ball in play. It kept finding holes, whether it was soft contact, whether it was hitting with runners in motion. Like, just everything about them. I was like, oh my gosh. And, And it was at that point where I was like, dude, everybody needs to start paying attention to the Blue Jays if this is the team that they're going to be. And they have not stopped since that time and are now in first place in the ALEs. Like just swept the Yankees, blew right past them.
Starting point is 00:16:38 And that's the kind of team the Cardinals need to be. You know, they got Vladdy Guerrero Jr. I understand that. They got a Boba Chet. But, you know, George Springer has been doing things. And you've got a bunch of guys that people have never even heard of. that are doing a good job for them and it's working as a team. It is not all on Vladdy Jr. shoulders.
Starting point is 00:17:00 So that's what I want the Cardinals to be like. When things are going well, they do look like that. Wilson Contreras ends up hitting a home run of this one, 12th long ball of the year. Does that in the seventh inning and the Cardinals take it easily, 8 to 1. Willie's home run also tied in with Lars Newt bar for the team lead at 12. Newt had to leave the game last night. had some discomfort in the rib area, but they just released the lineup a little bit ago,
Starting point is 00:17:28 and he is back and is in the lineup tonight. So it was just cautionary, no big deal. So that's good news. RBIs, 52 now for Wilson Contreras, tied his career best pre-all-star game total that he set with the Cubs back in 2019, that courtesy of Rob Brains. All in all, just really a well-rounded performance
Starting point is 00:17:49 by the Cardinals and took care of business. and got a series win. They're now five and one against the stats this year. And good teams take advantage of those not so fortunate. I don't want to say a bad team because it's hard to look at Washington and go, they're bad. I don't know how they're not winning more games. It's weird. But I will say less fortunate teams.
Starting point is 00:18:10 That's how we're going to phrase it here. But they're five and one against them. And, you know, you've got to do that. If you're going to get to the playoffs and you're going to do some damage and make it, to the next level, you have to beat the bad teams or the less fortunate teams. The Dodgers, for instance, although struggling now, they've lost six in a row, which is, mind-boggling. They're 20 and 22 against teams above 500.
Starting point is 00:18:35 They're 36 and 16, though, against teams below 500. The Cubs, 25 and 27 against teams over 500, but 30 and 11 against teams under. Padres, who also had 50 wins, just like the Cardinals. Cardinals chasing them. They're half game behind them in the wild card right now are. 16 and 30 against teams over 500. But they flip it and are 34 and 13 against the teams under. Cardinals are now 29 and 16 against teams under 500, which is good.
Starting point is 00:19:05 They have a chance to improve on that because this weekend, the Atlanta Braves are in town. And although they got some big names on that roster, they are 12 games below 500 and are just 7 and 13 in their last 20. We're going to talk about that series. plus we've got some updates on Yvon Herrera, Eric Fetty will talk about J.J. Weatherhole, Toccova Robe, Jordan Walker, all of that coming up for you on Lockdown Cardinals. If you're running a business, you know that every miss call is money left on the table,

The Atlanta Braves have dealt with a lot of injuries this season. And because of that, they are not the Braves that we are used to seeing.
Starting point is 00:21:41 Ronald de Cunia Jr. is back and he is incredible. Like he's still awesome. So definitely a bat to keep an eye on. Matt Olson is still there. Austin Riley is still there. Michael Harris is still there. Sean Murphy. I mean, they hear these names and you're like, what the hell?
Starting point is 00:22:01 How are they not good? But injuries have been the thing. Ronald O'Cunia Jr. missed a lot of the first part of the season recovering from the knee injury. Spencer Strider is just starting to kind of get his mojo back after returning from surgery. It was really rough for him early on as he comes back. But it started to look a lot better. Luckily, don't have to face him. Chris Sale, raining an L.Side Young Award winner was having a fantastic year.
Starting point is 00:22:25 and he goes down with a rib injury. So he's out right now. Spencer Schwellenbach out. A.J. Smith, Schauber, out. Listen to these guys from their rotation that are missing. Jerks and ProFar. He got suspended. He was cheating.
Starting point is 00:22:39 P.E.Ds. John Murphy was hurt for a while. So you can see why their overall record is not good. 40 and 52, which is a bit shocking, considering the talent that they have. In July, so far, they've lost two or three to the Angels. They got swept by Baltimore, just lost two of three to the A's.
Starting point is 00:22:57 If you're the Cardinals, you step on these guys while they're down. There is no mercy in this dojo. You got to keep them down, man, because the Braves, they will come up and bite you. We've seen them do it to the Cardinals before. Keep them down there. Let them suck. Let them suffer. Matthew Libertur, we'll get the ball tonight.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Let's go through the pitching matchups. Matthew Libertor, Friday night. Grant Holmes, who was another Kenny Power look-alike guy, got the long hair and the facial hair. Does not look like he would be a good athlete, just when you first glance at him. But he is pretty good. A lot of strikeout stuff.
Starting point is 00:23:36 Since May, he's punched out 92 hitters in 74 innings. That's a pretty good number. The ERA is just 3.04. Doesn't get knocked around much yet his record. Two and seven over that time. The Braves are three and ten in those 13 starts that he's made. So it's not really on him. They just don't seem to score runs when he's on the mountain.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Well, let's keep it that way. Let's let Matthew Libertador eat tonight. Saturday, the Cardinals are giving the ball to Eric Fetty, and I know most people wanted Michael McGreevy. Count me in as one of those guys that was right there with you. But the Cardinals are, they got a couple of different things here. They have a couple different reasons why they're pitching it or pitching Eric Fetty again. Number one, they're trying to get him right so that he can help him win ball games.
Starting point is 00:24:22 That's one thing. But part two of this is they're also trying to conjure up some sort of trade value for him before the deadline. You know, the plan with Eric Fetty, the trade to get him on the idea of doing it made sense, but it has backfired big time due to his struggles, not only at the end of last year with the Cardinals, because he didn't make all that much of a difference for them to try to make a playoff push. And then this year, it just hasn't been that. There, you know, he's had a few good games. You know, obviously the Nationals game was a good one.
Starting point is 00:24:58 Pitched really well in the next one after that. But after that, it's been rough. And I'm not really sure that teams are going to get fooled. If he has one or two more good outings before the trade deadline. But at this moment, he might not even be on anyone's radar. Like, who wants him? He's his last nine starts. He's 0 and 6 with an ERA of 6.48.
Starting point is 00:25:20 That's hideous. Why would you want to bring? that into your team if you're trying to make a playoff push unless injuries or something happened and that's you're that desperate. I'm hoping for the best for him, just like I always hope for the best for Miles Michaelis. But this trade has been a massive failure, massive failure overall. Again, I saw the value in it last year, getting famine here to face the lefties and get things going, which he did right away. But after things tapered off for the Cardinals, you know, he became expendable and they just cut him.
Starting point is 00:25:52 And then Fetty just has not worked out at all. Didn't help them much last year. It hasn't helped them all that much this year either. So just bad trade, didn't work. Then you've got Sunny Gray in line to make the final start. So that's good news before the All-Star break on Sunday. There will be no 70 pitches in this one. I'm sure, I'm sure he'll go as far as he possibly can and have a nice enjoyable all-star break.
Starting point is 00:26:20 Ivan Herrera began a rehab assignment on Thursday night in Memphis, one for three. The news about him, not so much that he got a hit, but he's expected to DH for four games before Sunday. And when he does return to the Cardinals, which will happen after the All-Star break, I'm guessing. He will only have limited, if any, catching assignments for the rest of the season. They say it's just due to the leg injuries. He's had two leg injuries and the same leg. they're trying to avoid that because they got to keep his bat in the lineup at all costs. So D.H is going to be his thing.
Starting point is 00:26:56 I've heard that he's also working out in the outfield just in case they need to put him out there. I think first base is going to be his future when Willie is gone. But as of right now, the catching will cease. And it'll be Pozo and Paez moving forward. And Herrera is just going to be a DH bat, which, It's fine. Stay healthy because they need that freaking bad. So bad. He's arguably their best hitter.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Jordan Walker hit a home run for Springfield last night. He continues to work on timing and hasn't been easy for him at all during the rehab assignment so far. So people are wondering what the plan is for him even after the All Star break. I'm guessing they activate him and bring him back, but there's still a possibility that he stays down in the minors for a little while until he can get that swing fixed. if it's ever going to get fixed, you know, people are really worried about him. I'm one of them.
Starting point is 00:27:53 One guy I'm not worried about, J.J. Weatherhole. Really nice start at Memphis since getting promoted. 4-4-11. He's got a single double-triple and a home run. Yes, he has hit for the cycle over four games, but he's hit for the size of four years, three games. Three games. He's hit for the cycle in.
Starting point is 00:28:08 Two Rebys, four runs scored. He looks great. Hasn't slowed down a bet since getting the AAA. Ticoa Roeby, pitch five and two-third scoreless sittings from Memphis. this walked one, struck out six. He's now allowed just two earned runs in his last four starts with them while striking out 21 in 21 innings.
Starting point is 00:28:25 Again, if they decide to move on from an Eric Fetty, Michael McGreevy obviously has the first spot, but if they move on from anybody else, it's Coro Roby. Come on down. We'd love to see you. But you've got to be impressed with what he's done so far this season. And he looks the part, man. staying healthy was always the big key with Toccoa Robi over the years, has been healthy this year and has moved up from AA to AAA and St. Louis,
Starting point is 00:28:56 the next spot to go. We're going to do some draft stuff tomorrow. I will have a new episode for you on Saturday with the Cardinals picking number five overall on Sunday. So I'm going to go do some research, get through all the different mock drafts to see who and what the Cardinals are going after. Starting point is 00:29:25 Hopefully we'll not only be able to talk about that, but another Cardinals victory. Oh, and I am going to, I'm excited about this, I'm going to Superman this weekend. Yeah. I'm more of a Batman guy, but love Superman too. Christopher Reeve movies from back in the day. Oh, so good. Every time I hear the John Williams score, goosebumps, goosebumps. So I'm excited to do that.
Starting point is 00:29:48 So I got my socks ready to roll. Hope it does at this point. St. Louis's own James Gunn doing the directing in this one. 82% of Rottenhammed tomato so far.
