Starting point is 00:00:00 The St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen does what it has done best so far this year, and that's giveaway leads and lose games. But if you're looking for change, wait until you hear what manager Ali Marmal had to say in the post game. You are locked on Cardinals. Starting point is 00:00:40 We're on YouTube, like, subscribe, comment, hit that notification button so you don't miss anything. Also available on TikTok and Instagram at Locked on Cardinals. This right here is a show serving Cardinal Nation and giving the best and most frustrated fans in baseball, all of the info about the birds on the bat. All right, guys. So no ugly loud shirt today. The Cardinals did not win the series. it was there.
Starting point is 00:01:04 They had a chance, but inevitably the bullpen came in. It did not work out. And guys, I don't know, man. It might just me being frustrated, but this can't continue like this. This cannot continue like this, can they?
Starting point is 00:01:25 They can't just keep putting Ryan Fernandez out there at the major league level and just let him get clobbered. You know, personally, I don't care what he did last year. That was great. Cool. I only care about what he's doing now. And what he's doing now is getting shelled over and over.
Starting point is 00:01:46 It took him three pitches, three, to have a game go from one to one to four to one. And that's how it ended. The Cardle's offense, it sucked today. Not making any experience. excuses for them, but did anyone think that when Ryan Fernandez jogged out of that bullpen that this wasn't going to end badly? Like I even exed out or tweeted out, whatever the hell we call it now. That I was like, here comes Fernandez, fingers crossed. I can't watch is the
Starting point is 00:02:20 gift that I used. I didn't have to watch for long. Three pitches and it was over, hangs the slider on the third pitch right over the heart of the plate. Eli White, the last. The legendary Eli White crushes it 434 feet into the stands in left field, an absolute bomb. 4 to 1. And I know runway is a thing this year. I guess it's better than saying a leash. So these guys aren't treated like animals. But the runway for this has got to be almost up, doesn't it?
Starting point is 00:02:54 Like, how many times can we do this? Like, aren't you pissed off if you're a guy in that clubhouse? and we just keep doing the same things over and over to lose games. It's the same guys that just aren't getting their jobs done. Do your job, right? That's the whole thing when it comes to a team. And certain people on this roster are not doing their job very well. And Fernandez is one of them.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Something is off. He wasn't great in the spring. He's been virtually unusable from the bullpen this year. Opponents are now hitting 375 against him. 375. He has allowed 15 hits, 13 runs, 11 earned runs, all of that in just 8 and 2 thirds innings. That's hard to do. That's hard to do.
Starting point is 00:03:46 And it's tough to watch it. It's unacceptable. How do you justify putting him out there not only at the end of games with the game in the balance, which feels like it should be a big no-no by now? but like at the major league level at all. Like what are the lessons that he's learning here? Where is his confidence right now? It's got to be in the crapper, doesn't it?
Starting point is 00:04:14 Now, in hindsight, you would like to bring him in in situations that aren't so tense, right? You know, high level situations. You would have preferred to have brought him in on Tuesday. Six-run lead, not with runners on second and third and one out in a tie ball game. six-run leave. Instead, they brought in Ryan Helsley on Tuesday because he needed the work. There's no guarantees that Helsley was going to be used in today's game. And they're like, dude, he's been off a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:46 We got to get him in there. So they got him in there instead of using Ryan Fernandez in that situation. I don't even know if Fernandez was available on Tuesday. But it just sucks, man. And it's not just Fernandez. You know, he's the guy right now because he's the one who's getting beat up a lot in these games. But it's not just him. He's kind of our poster child right now.
Starting point is 00:05:10 But I mean, John King, you don't get a pass either, dude. Gave up the lead after a double and then a bloop single. I know the bloop single wasn't hit hard. This is a good pitch. He still gave up the double to put you in that spot in the first place. Opponents are hitting 355 against John King. He's got an ERA of 6.4.3. That sucks.
Starting point is 00:05:29 That's really bad. That's really bad. For a ground ball guy. Jojo Romero comes in with a game tied. in the eighth inning, single to left field. Then you get the swinging button single. He gets Murphy to tap out on that play right in front of the play. But, you know, he's the one who set the inning up for disaster in the first place with the lead off single.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Couldn't get the left-hander out. That's what you're in there for. Jojo is to get people like Matt Olson out. You're left-handed. That's your job. You didn't do your job. basically he was the gasoline and Fernandez was the match and then kaboo!
Starting point is 00:06:12 There goes the ballgame. And we've seen this happen a lot so far this year. And the difficult part about the appearances of King and Romero was that a couple of these hits, they're not even hit well. Like I mentioned, they're like little bloopers or infield hits and like it's just crap hits. They find grass. But part of that is because you have lack of swing and miss stuff coming out of that bullpen. you're not getting the strikeouts that you thought you were going to get from Joe Joe Romero.
Starting point is 00:06:39 John King is not a strikeout guy. We know that. He's your ground ball guy. He's supposed to get your double plays and stuff. But if you can't miss bats, you take the risk of things going against you and multiple times in the series. The Braves seemingly mastered the swinging bunt because it seemed like it happened a lot in this series. It felt like it happened 15, 20 times. Like it was crazy.
Starting point is 00:06:59 It seemed like they just big, mighty swinging the little dribbler and they're on base. You know, when things are going your way, they're going your way. Things are going the Braves way after their rough start to the season. Things are not going the way of the Cardinals right now after their good start to the season. Ollie made a good point after this game. I'm paraphrasing a little bit here, but it was about how tough it is to give runway to relief pitchers. Because when things don't go well in a game for a relief pitcher, usually that game flips. And it's different with hitters because you can,
Starting point is 00:07:34 stick one of your hitters into a game. He goes O for four with three strikeouts. You're still going to put him in the lineup the next day. And he's right. That's true. He said the relievers, you know, they're on an island. And it's true. It is different. But when did we become ride or die with Ryan Fernandez? Like when did he become, like he's not Jordan Walker. He's not Nolan Gore. He's not one of your top prospects. The rule five pick that you grab last year. What are we doing? Like, why are we, why are we like, you know, we got to, this isn't Ryan Halsley. This isn't Matthew Libertor. This is, I mean, why are we ride or die with Ryan Fernandez? I don't, I don't mind backing your guy. I get it, but the results are the results.
Starting point is 00:08:24 And pretty much every time he comes into the game, that game is over for the Cardinals. They lose. And the other thing is, if you think change is coming, check us out. Check out this quote from Molly. This is who we've got. We have got to get them back on track. There is nothing coming from down below that's going to change what's going on here. We have to get these guys better. And the only way is for them to pitch.
Starting point is 00:08:52 We're going to keep going with them. Again, Jojo Romero is a veteran. You're not sending him down. John King? I don't think we're married to John King, are we? But lack of options of any left-handers down in Memphis makes that a problem. So if there's nobody better than him down there, then what's the point? Just move them out to bring in somebody who's worse.
Starting point is 00:09:20 The Ryan Fernandez thing, though, like, is Riley O'Brien dead to this organization now? He's not worthy of a chance anymore. He's throwing seven innings down in Memphis, struck out. out of 14 hitters. He's got an area of 3.86. He had one really bad outing. And then he had one just kind of me. But most of the time, he's been decent. Matt Sonson. He's still on this team, right? He's on the roster. He was out in the bullpen, what he? How do we know that he can't get people out? Do we know that already? They've tried Roy Croft. They tried Munoz. And I know Memphis is dealing with a lot of injuries.
Starting point is 00:10:06 But man, it is hard watching Ryan Fernandez continue to get the ball the way things have been going for. And like Ali said, like there's not a real great situation to put them in because they're in a lot of close ball games. But if you can't trust the guy to get out, so I mean, what are we doing? What was he on the roster for? Like, find somebody else who can get outs. And Ali preach that magic word, the John Moseilac magic word. A little bit of patience, just a little bit of patience. But it's tough.
Starting point is 00:10:42 It's tough because we want to win ball games as fans. Like we're here to win ball games. We want to watch them win ball games. The Cardinals, to continue down this path, that's not their ultimate goal. It's not winning ball games. So tough pill to swallow. Hence why you don't see people coming out to the ballpark all that often. When you're not there to win ball games, you're just there to, yeah, let's just play.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Tough stuff. You know what, though? Miles Michaelis was good today. Yeah, for real. If you didn't see the game, Miles Michaels was actually very, very good today. But the offense was not. It went cold in today's game.

Starting point is 00:12:52 Thanks for making a lot on Cardinals. Your first listen every day, leave your comments on YouTube as well as on X anytime you want your feedback. It's always welcome and encourage the good and the bad. Things aren't great right now for the Cardinals, so I get all of the angry comments. I get it.
Starting point is 00:13:06 I get it. We'll discuss it too because I, you know, I'm frustrated. I know I'm a pretty positive person, but I'm frustrated too, man. I want to win ball games. I feel like this team should be winning more ball games and they're not. And if Brian Fernandez is the number one whipping boy,
Starting point is 00:13:22 then he's displacing Miles Michaelis, who has held that role for quite some time, a couple of seasons now. And for good reason, he's had some of the worst numbers for a starting pitcher, not only on the Cardinals, but across the entire league. Like, it's just been bad all around.
Starting point is 00:13:39 This season, he had a, you know, a decent day against the Angels, got murdered by Boston. We don't have to relive that, was all right. right against the Phillies, considering the Phillies lineup. He only goes four and two thirds against the Mets, but another great lineup. The Mets just swept the Phillies today. Tells you how good the Mets are. But on Wednesday, Miles had his best outing of the year so far. And I know that the Braves are not at full force at this moment, but still some pretty good
Starting point is 00:14:08 hitters up and down that lineup. Six hits scattered over six shutout innings. Two of those hits were the first two batters of the game. And I tweeted that out too. I was like, hold on to your butts. It's one of my favorite gifts of all time. But because I was like, oh gosh, they're knocking them all over already. And two walks, two strikeouts, got into a nice flow after that first inning. And he was cruising right along. Got up to 89 pitches, which was a season high. So you get to that pitch count because people are asking online, like, why are we even pulling Miles Michaelis right now? I mean, it's 89 pitches in April.
Starting point is 00:14:51 They're just being cautious about things. They're not pushing guys to 100, 110, 115 pitches. If you're going to start a new inning, might as well bring in somebody fresh, right? Scored to the bullpen wasn't exactly a shocker. I wasn't surprised they did that. You were able to avoid any of those big innings that Miles is well known for giving up.
Starting point is 00:15:13 for six so why press your luck right but then king gives up a run talked about that already kylee he was awesome again today has become one of the few reliable arms out there it's basically lehi mayton and helsley right now and you know i saw multiple people commenting as well like lehi and mayton aren't going to have arms by june if they keep it up like this and it feels that way because they're the only ones that are getting people out consistently. It's the only people we can trust. You know, like that's the thing is, like people giving Ali a hard time about choosing certain pitchers.
Starting point is 00:15:53 You got to remember he's navigating, you know, over this 13 game stretch where he's only got two days off or something like that. Obviously, a day off on Thursday. I understand that where it's like, hey, maybe we should try. But maybe one of those pitchers was like, look, I, you know, I'm down today. I'm not going to be able to make it today. You know, maybe Mayton was down at the time.
Starting point is 00:16:14 At the same time, they still want to keep getting Fernandez out there because they want him to be better and get better. And they're saying the only way to do that is pitching. Unfortunately, it's costing the Cardinals games by going through this process right now. But back to Miles, Michaelis, for a moment. I want to get hung up on the bullpen again. But, you know, these games that we saw today from Michaelis, these are the anomalies for Miles that you wish you could bottle up
Starting point is 00:16:38 and pitch like this. more often with him. Six shutout innings, obviously not sustainable, but a nice quality start is what you're hoping from. And you got that on Wednesday. He did get a little bit of help from the wind on the Austin Riley
Starting point is 00:16:55 shot that died at the wall. Apparently that would have been a home run in every single ballpark of Major League Baseball except we're in Atlanta, so thank you. Not that it mattered. They lost the game anyway. But overall, you were pleased with what you saw from Miles.
Starting point is 00:17:12 You know, he kept people off balance. He was throwing a lot of slow breaking balls that had the Braves out on their front foot. It was, you know, I've said this before. I enjoy watching Miles Michaelis pitch when he's pitching well because I love the way he's able to move the ball around the zone. I still don't understand how he gets squeezed. Like there was a couple of calls at the bottom of the strike zone today that were not
Starting point is 00:17:35 called strikes. I'm like, how? All Miles Michaelis does is. throw it around that little box called the strike zone. How do you miss those calls when he's pitching? He's not throwing at 101 with a bunch of sink and crazy movement. How do you miss them? I'll never understand it.
Starting point is 00:17:53 So you're pleased with Miles. You're pleased with Kyle Leahy today. You're not pleased with what we saw from the offense. I know I'm not. Scored one run in the first on a two-out RBI devil by Aronado, big hit. It felt like it had been a while since Aronado had a big hit like that. But then nothing. the rest of the game, which was really disappointing because the brave starter, Bryce Elder,
Starting point is 00:18:15 had control issues early on, couldn't find the strike zone at all. And unfortunately, the Cardinals weren't able to capitalize more. You know, he would walk a guy, and then I, who was it, he walked Newt Bar. And then I saw Contreras and then Gorman swing at the first pitch, both of them. and they're at bats right after the new bar walk and I'm like what are we doing? And then you started to know that like I started to pick up that they were kind of trying to attack Elder early. So maybe that was part of the game plan and it just didn't work out. I just, you know, I feel like you got to fluctuate the game plan a little bit when this guy can't throw strikes that, like I'm making get two on you before.
Starting point is 00:19:02 It's not like he's got devastating stuff that you can't hit. Like get two strikes on you. You make this guy get in the zone before you start whaling away at things. So I don't know. I was a little disappointed with how that stuff turned out. And you just kind of knew that it was going to cost him later on in the game when these chances with guys on early were not getting cashed in. Newt 0 for 3 today had two walks.
Starting point is 00:19:29 So on base percentage, great. Was able to put any hits into the game. Contreras was 1 for 3. He's got his average up to 200. Mendoza line, Alex, for which I know it's funny because we say it, but considering how he started, you know, he's creeping. He's having better at bats. Alec Berlinson, three for four today, a couple opposite field hits. He's up to 276 all of a sudden, which is great.
Starting point is 00:19:52 The only thing missing from Alec Berluson right now is some of that extra base hit pop. That's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for him to plug some gaps. You know, I'm not saying he's got to hit home runs all the time or anything like that because that's not who he is. but a little more pop, a little more danger, you know, would be nice like he was last year, you know, where he went on that streak where he was, you know, he was just kind of mashed and everything. And I get he's not going to be like that all the time, but that's the next step, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:21 now that he's putting the ball in play and it's finding holes, the next step will be getting some lift, finding those gaps. So hopefully positive things for biscuits moving forward. Jordan Walker, on the other hand, O for four today, he's down to 198. He is won for his last 23. And it's really tough to watch this because, again, we're all rooting for Jordan Walker. We don't want to see the guy fail.
Starting point is 00:20:44 And I watch him take it bats in other games. And I'm like, look at it. Look at how smart he's being. Look at him. He's not chasing those pitches low and away, which is all they're doing to him. They're teasing them with an inside pitch, sinkers and stuff that are coming in on his hands.
Starting point is 00:20:59 But then 80% of the pitches are going low and away to Jordan Walker. and he's all, he looks like he did last year. He's all messed up from him. And when he starts to lay off on him, then he finds, then he sees a pitch that's coming in. And even though it's not even a strike and it's too far inside, he's still swinging at it.
Starting point is 00:21:19 He's like, oh, yay, I'm finally getting that inside pitch. Like, I rarely see a bat's where the pitches are ever even in the strike zone against Walker. And if he could be like, like how we saw Marcelo Zuna in the series for the Braves. If he can start really laying off and I know he wants to hit the ball so bad. He wants to contribute.
Starting point is 00:21:41 He wants to do damage. He wants it so bad. The pitchers are taking advantage of that. And they're getting him out. He's getting himself out, really. So I need him to learn to just stand there. Just be this big, menacing dude and just have a good eye and make him come to you.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Don't look at anything else. If they throw three pitches on the, the outside part of the plate, I don't want you even swinging at them. Just let them go until they start throwing them for strikes. Don't look at everything right here on the inside and see how that works out for you. But Jordan Walker down bad right now. Cardinals go two for seven to Thornerson's scoring position. They strand nine, seven total hits, which is one extra base hit. Kind of a snooze fest of a game for the offense. No, Brin de Donovan again. He's dealing with that rib issue that kept him out on Tuesday out again on Wednesday, but apparently he was available if they needed him to,
Starting point is 00:22:35 but they wanted to give him the full day. Gorman was over three, although he scored the lone Cardinal run in this game, but he had a really nice moment on Tuesday, and I don't want to gloss over that, okay, is a bummer of a game as it was on Wednesday and to lose this one again after a nice game by Michaelis, but the game on Tuesday, the big hit by Gwold. Borman. Well, it was huge. Such a nice moment on Tuesday and we'll hopefully get a season going. I want to discuss that coming up next on Locked on Cargles. Every game, every night all season long at local analysis on a national scale. You can find MLB game night on Locked on MLB on YouTube or wherever you listen to your podcast. They basically take clips like they talk about each and every game.
Starting point is 00:24:56 They take clips from the locked on hosts like myself. And they put them into a show and it just gives you a run down and everything that's going on. in Major League Baseball. Last night was a good one for us as Cardinal fans because Tuesday night's game, yeah, was tight. It was tight for the first eight innings, four to four a game. Cardinals jumped out to that early lead thanks to the Lars Neupar home run, fourth home run of the season, the top of the third.
Starting point is 00:25:24 And we talked about this on Tuesday, how Lars Newbar is the straw that stirs the Cardinals' Kool-Aid. He's the guy that if he's taking walks, pounding hits, getting on base, the offense, it tends to go to another level. No hits on Wednesday. He did walk twice, but no hits. Offen sputtered a little bit because he didn't get any hits. The walks you love, but the first walk got erased right away to double play.
Starting point is 00:25:50 But you're looking for more offense from Newport. Of course, we want to see more from Jordan Walker and Burleson and Gorman, who we'll talk about here shortly. But when Lars is doing his thing, this team is. this team is much more competitive. And the offense, it just, it starts with him. It really does. Like, go look at the games where he's had a decent game.
Starting point is 00:26:10 That's usually the ones the Cardinals win. And when he's an offer, they don't win very often. So we talked about new swinging at more pitches in the zone, not that, you know, he's chasing things, but that he might be taking too many good pitches. And nude is not some slap hitter who's just going to lay the ball, you know, just lay it out there into the outfield. no, the dude can rake. He's got pop. But if he doesn't swing, it's all for not, right?
Starting point is 00:26:36 So to see him smoke that first pitch slider on Tuesday for a home run, you love to see it because it means these pitchers can't just lay one in there on Newt to try to get ahead in the count, thinking he's just going to automatically take that first pitch, ball or strike. He can be dangerous early in counts, is what he's showing you. Do I want him always free swinging at the first pitch? Hell, no. I don't want him like a. Alec Berlinson has been where he feels like he's constantly swinging at the first pitch. So, of course not. I don't want him to do that.
Starting point is 00:27:10 But Newt's not that guy anyway. I'm not worried about him turning into that person. His best attribute is his incredible eye at the plate. He knows how good he is. But I like that he's willing to uncoil on a first pitch from time to time when the pitch is what he's looking for in the spot that he's looking for. I'm okay with that. Braves come back to tie things up on Tuesday night.
Starting point is 00:27:30 Eventually they take the lead. against Palante, didn't have his good stuff by any means, somewhat similar to the start in Boston, where he couldn't get through five. He walked three hitters. Different to that one is that his pitch count went up because he kept striking a lot of people out of he. I think he had six strikeouts and that came in Boston. Only had one K on Tuesday. Just really did not have a feel for any of his pitches. So not a great showing for Andre, who lasts just four and a 30, allows four runs on seven hits, two home runs. Don't like to see that from a sinker baller. But as much as this team has struggled, specifically on the road,
Starting point is 00:28:02 they continue to show that they are not going to just roll over and quit. Mason win hits an RBI single. Jordan Walker scores on a wild pitch. We got a four-four game in the eight. Cardinals load the bases for Nolan Gorb. Who had come up in a basis-loaded situation earlier. Two out, sixth inning, flies out to center field. This time, he's following what was an outstanding at bat in a cool battle.
Starting point is 00:28:28 between the pitcher and Wilson Contreras. Like, that was like, okay, maybe I'm over exaggerating a little bit, but it felt like a playoff moment, you know, where you have this huge bat going on in a game, but it just felt that way because, you know, the game's tied at the moment. Wilson, one of the better hitters on the Cardinals, and he's fighting things off and he's not swinging at these.
Starting point is 00:28:49 And so he gives this probably the greatest bat flip following a walk in the history of baseball. It wasn't like a walkoff. where he walked in a game-winning run scored. I just got first base and loaded the bases, but he chucked that sucker and he was like, woo, and I don't know,
Starting point is 00:29:07 it's fun. But Gorman steps up and what does he do? He rips a change up into right field, right down the line, clears the bases, makes it seven to four, a massive moment for the confidence of Nolan, who hadn't seen a whole lot of success recently.
Starting point is 00:29:23 A couple of hits here and there, right? But for the most part, he's trying to get, going again after the injury. Remember he was actually hitting pretty well until the hamstring thing happened. So they're going to give him the bats no matter what, which is why I was a little surprised that they decided to keep Thomas and Jacey on the roster over Siani. I know that Brendan Donovan's entry with the rib played a part in this decision as well. They didn't want to lose two infielders, you know, so that made sense. But the playing time is what I'm concerned
Starting point is 00:29:52 about, not readily available for another endfielder. So Jacey didn't. getting a bat in the series against Atlanta, even with Donnie over the last two games, not being in the lineup. You know, you haven't seen Sejacy at all. So I wonder how long they'll stay if Donovan feels well enough to come back this weekend for the series against Milwaukee. So just something to think about. Day off on Thursday, back home this weekend to face those Milwaukee Brewers,
Starting point is 00:30:23 finally back home. But it doesn't last very long. It's their home this weekend. And then they're back on the road to go to some. Cincinnati. So the Milwaukee Brewers, once again, are just finding ways to win ball games despite letting Willie Adomas walk in free agency, trading away Devin Williams. And here they are. Second in the division, 13 wins already on the season. So they just win. They find ways. They are what the cardals used to be. The carls used to just find ways. Now we're finding ways to lose instead
Starting point is 00:30:54 to win. So finally another NL Central opponent, I have only been to face the pirate so far. So these games are important. These games are important. So hopefully they'll get their head straight on the day off on Thursday for the weekend at home. Thanks for making a lockdown cartels. Your first listen every day.
