Starting point is 00:00:00 Hallelujah. Church saves the day and the Cardinals get the win. But once again, this bullpen refuses to make anything easy. You are locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Haford. And on today's show, we have got a double header in Memphis to tell you about, which included another really nice start from a guy who the Cardinals made. Maybe might mean to use at some point this season, but let's talk about the game of five to four a Cardinals victory gives them three wins in a row, pushes their record to 17 and 13 on the season, and it's against the Pirates.
Starting point is 00:00:49 It's in the division. They're now three and no against division opponents, which is great. The offense did their job and played some wonderful station to station baseball, which we will talk about a little bit later. but we need to start with the Cardinals pitching staff first and foremost. This bullpen is going to age. Ali Marble is coaching staff and the entirety of Cardinals Nation by a decade. If things do not change at some point.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Like are we all getting a little more gray in our beards watching this bullpen? I mean, we're 30 games into the season and I'm like, you know, being a relief pitcher, it's a very volatile job. And I understand that it isn't easy. You know, we take it for granted. These guys are just going to come in and get everybody out, no big deal. And that's what they're supposed to do.
Starting point is 00:01:45 But it does take a special type of pitcher to do that and an even more special type of pitcher to be good at doing that. Now, the Cardle's bullpen as a whole, it's been as frustrating of a bullpen as I can remember. And I don't have a great memory. Like, I don't have one of those memories like, dude, do you remember when 1994 and this, like, I don't have the memory like that. Um, but I feel like the bullpen hasn't really been a problem for the Cardinals the last few seasons. There's always going to be hiccups here and there from people, but it doesn't seem like like, oh, boy, we just cannot go to the bullpen or we're dead. And it just, this year, no lead feels safe.
Starting point is 00:02:26 When, when any of these guys come in. And it's not so much the back-in guys. It's not so much Jojo Soriano or Riley O'Brien. And you can say what you want about Jojo Romero's struggles recently. But overall, he's been really good, right? Soriano wasn't even supposed to be a late-inning guy. At least I don't think. I don't think that was the plan. He was more of a depth guy.
Starting point is 00:02:47 You flipped Andre Grenio for him. So either of the nationals way undervalued him in that deal. And the Cardinals got a huge, huge return. Or he was just supposed to be a guy that could help out. Hey, we need a fresh arm. Kind of like what he's got a little more than we like what Andre Grinio's guy. You want to flip him, see what works. That's what it felt like that deal was to me.
Starting point is 00:03:16 And now he's become a guy that you're seeing show up in the seventh, the eighth, and the ninth inning for you. I don't think that was the plan. And Riley O'Brien has been awesome. Can't complain about him and keep a straight face doing it. like he's only given up with a couple of runs this year like i mean we can't we can't bitch and moan about that but the bridge guys the guys that get you from the starter to those three type of guys your back at the end of the bullpen guys had been an absolute horror show
Starting point is 00:03:48 and i'm not talking pg 13 kind i'm talking art the clown terrifier style with the with the blood and the guts and the gore, just gruesome, just gruesome. And more times than not, it's their own fault because the can't throw strikes. They, they punish themselves. Ryan Stannick, his stat line is an absolute massacre. 12 innings, 12-erd runs, 16 hits, 12 walks. 17 strikeouts, I'll give him credit for those. but he's like he's like nuke leloush in bull Durham you know the scene after his first game they're like he
Starting point is 00:04:36 walked 18 new league record struck out 18 also a new league record and then they go into all his wild pitches and stuff but stanick is do it you guys got a great arm an outstanding arm he's pumping a hundred regularly 95th percentile on fastball of velo in the league. He's got elite stuff there. The width percentage, 94th percentile. That's elite stuff. K percentage, very strong, 82nd percentile. Yet, here he is with an ERA of nine and a whip of 2.33. There are only three relievers with double-digit appearances who have a worse whip than Ryan Stannick, which, by the way, in case you're not familiar, that is walks plus hits per innings pitch. Not everybody knows all these dorky stats that we throw out there.
Starting point is 00:05:32 So I want to make sure you know what we're getting into. But those three guys are Brian Abray, you in Houston, do the Cardinals beat up on, Tanner Banks and Philly, and then Devin Williams with the Mets. And on Wednesday, Stanick, you know, he rolls into the game with score five to one. And everybody, you know, people online freak out. They're like, why are they using it? Well, they got to use these guys.
Starting point is 00:05:57 They can't just pitch the same three dudes. over and over and over and over. They got to use these guys. They're on the roster. They're in the bullpen. They got to get them right. That's what they're trying to do. So five to one seems like a pretty safe lead.
Starting point is 00:06:10 No. Cardinals had just scored two more in the top half of the seventh. All the momentum is on their side. They have this game in hand. It feels like it's in hand, right? This is a win. The pirates are all but defeated at this point. And he does the one thing.
Starting point is 00:06:28 that you just cannot do as a reliever. And that's walk people and then give them hope. You start putting people on. They start getting excited. Like, ooh, well, this guy sucks. Let's, we could come back, right? Like, you don't want him to get into that mindset. And there he was.
Starting point is 00:06:48 With one out, he walks the 20-year-old rookie Connor Griffin after a nine pitch at bat. So it wasn't like he just threw four crazy pitches and nothing happened. It was a nice. I didn't pitch a bat. It was a good job by Griffin. But then he gives up a single to left by Joey Bart, throws a wild pitch to make it first and third. And then he walks O'Neill Cruz to load up the bases. And you see Ollie like, he's like, he wants to say so many bad things. And he's keeping it all in. His chest is going to explode eventually. But he reluctantly comes out, brings Jojo into the game, because Stana can't throw strikes,
Starting point is 00:07:29 brings him into face what he thinks is going to be the lefty, Brandon Lowe, but the pirates swap him out for the right-hander, Nick York, who promptly singles on a sinker down, wasn't even a bad pitch. Don't complain about Jojo there. It was a good pitch, but it was a good piece of hitting.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Makes it five to three. Romero walks the switch hitter Brian Reynolds, but then strikes out the lefty Ryan O'Hard, and then he gets Marcello Zuna to ground out to end it. And I'm not going to put those runs on Jojo. I'm not going to complain about him there. He had to come in with the bases loaded and one out and clean up Stanix mess again.
Starting point is 00:08:03 I mean, you're just hoping that he's able to shut it down and get him out of there without anything happening. But that you wouldn't even be in that predicament if the guy could just throw strikes and he can't. Soriano takes over in the eighth inning, gives up a single. Then he walks a guy on four pitches. They weren't even close. We've seen him kind of lose his command.
Starting point is 00:08:26 here and there from time to time, but now we're in deep duty again. We got two on and nobody out. But I want to give credit to Soriano, who, you know, came back, you know, gathered himself. I was like, all right, hold on and got his crap together, gets the K on Connor Griffin and then got the ground ball that he needed for the double play, but a rare error by the gold Glover Mason win. He boots it, keeps the inning going. Eventually they score a run on a second ground ball where JJ made a really nice play
Starting point is 00:08:53 over at second base. They almost turned two, but couldn't quite get it. that makes it for five to four game. And then you go to the ninth inning where Riley O'Brien comes on and serves up what appeared to be off the bat. We all thought it was gone, didn't you? We all thought it was gone. You're like, oh, gosh, do we just blow this sucker?
Starting point is 00:09:12 But out of nowhere, the home run burglar, Nathan Church comes flying over into the left field corner area, comes soaring in, jumps because it's a smaller wall on YouTube. you can see the catch. But it's a smaller wall out there in left field. And he makes a very nonchalant leap at the wall. And at the last moment, Rob's Nick Gonzalez of a home run and certainly extra bases if he doesn't catch it. And the Cardinals win the game. It was crazy. Like we all thought it was gone. Everybody thought it was gone. Look at the fans behind him. They all think it's gone. Riley O'Brien thought it was gone. You see, he saw his reaction. There he is like, but believe it. He's just.
Starting point is 00:10:00 just, Riley O'Brien's in shock there. He's in disbelief. If it's a warmer night in Pittsburgh, and this is later in the season, that thing is a few rows deep. It should have been a home run. And I think Danny Wexelman said that it was like 27 ballparks that would have been gone. I think maybe I'm wrong on that. It was 20-something, she said. But it wasn't. Not there. And the Cardinal is saying on for their third straight victory. Third win in the series, they win the series. Don't have the ugly shirt today. We'll wear it. for the next episode. But they'll go for the sweep on Thursday against Paul Skeens,
Starting point is 00:10:34 who is 0 and 4 against the Cardinals in his career. They've gotten the upper hand on him every time, every time. And I know people want change. I get it. They want Stanink and Brule and Svonsam gone, whether it's ship them down to Memphis or launch them into the shadow realm somewhere, just get them out of here. I'm with you, at least on Stanick and Brule.
Starting point is 00:10:57 I don't think my feelings for either one of them as far as pitchers has been, I've been shy about that. Like, I didn't think Brule was good enough when they got him in this off season. It was shocked. They didn't find another lefty to bring in to compete with them outside of Pachy Norton. Stanik, I wasn't, I just knew he hadn't been a really good pitch in the last few years. Hasn't had an ERA plus above 100, above league average since 2023. So I didn't have a whole lot of like hope that he was going to be something special and he has a bit. But I've seen enough, man.
Starting point is 00:11:33 I get anxiety every time either one of them comes into the ball game. Svanson, I'm, he's young, guys. You're not going to, you got to turn him around. You got to figure it out. They're not going to cut him. But the other two, man, I've seen enough. Like it feels like a Christmas miracle when they come into a game and they get through an inning unscathed. And it shouldn't feel that way.
Starting point is 00:11:53 A roster move, it's going to be coming so that Hunter Dobbins can be put it onto the roster because he's starting on Thursday. So we'll see what happens. At the point of recording this, there was nothing. So on the positive side, Andre Palante, all right, pretty excellent. So we're going to talk about him in this offense with our stars of the game coming up next on Locked on Cardinals. Baseball season is here and now you can trade every game on Calci. Now on Cali, you can trade every single game, you know, for the game between the Cardinals and the Pirates.

One of the worst years imaginable. Went half a season without winning a game. He just looked lost mentally. There was no real confidence there. He was searching all the time.
Starting point is 00:14:23 And we like Andre Palante. The same thing with like Justin Brule and Ryan Standing. This is not a personal attack on them. It's not like they're bad people. There's not having a lot of success. Last year, Andre Palante did not have a lot of success. But there he was taking the ball every fifth day because his team needed him to. His manager needed him to.
Starting point is 00:14:44 This organization needed him to. They didn't have anybody else. And they were like, dude, we know things are not good right now. And we know this is really, really tough. And it's a struggle. But we need you to take these hits. And he did. And he was rewarded for that this spring when they said,
Starting point is 00:15:01 all right, we're going to wipe this slate clean. We know you're better than whatever that was last year. We've seen you be better. Now go do it when you're spot in this rotation. And it did. And he went down and did it. And outside of the one ugly outing against Boston, which is going to happen to pitchers,
Starting point is 00:15:21 Andre has been pretty darn solid, you guys. He was really good against the Mets, five shutout innings, although now we know the Mets. are terrible. Two runs on three hits against Washington, who have a really good offense. One run on three hits against Houston, very good offense. Seattle touched him up for three runs, but it was only on four hits. He struck out eight in that game. We know Seattle's pretty good team. And then against Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, one run, five hits, six innings.
Starting point is 00:15:52 His first quality start of the season. My favorite part about his stat line, no walks, which is super rare for him. And six more strike. Now the fifth inning is really where he had to bear down. Could have been some serious danger in that fifth inning. Solo home run started off by Horowitz on a hanging breaking ball. It happens. Then a single by Connor Griffin, who steals second on the first pitch. And you're kind of waiting for things that you're starting to get that feeling again.
Starting point is 00:16:22 You're like, things are going to start teetering towards the pirates, aren't they? This is where the momentum shifts. But Andre Palante comes through. He gets Bart to fly out to right. They don't run on Jordan and then strikes out both O'Neill Cruz and Brandon Lowe ends the threat. I have been very impressed with how he has looked despite the walks because they'll still drive me up a wall. They're usually a problem with Palante averaging almost three per game before Wednesday. Way too many, way too many free guys getting on base.
Starting point is 00:16:57 He's become a solid starter though. somebody that Ali can rely on in this first month of the season. Will it stand the test of time and be this way all year? I don't know. But I like that he's starting to pick up more strikeouts. The ground balls are still a thing. Dre Day, as we call it, no longer feels like pain day in St. Louis. So well done, Andre Palante.
Starting point is 00:17:23 J.J. Weatherhole. Let's talk about him. Let's talk some offense. because there were some really nice things going on in this one offensively. Heck, the last, since that ninth inning on Monday, the offense has just been wonderful to watch. It's been a lot of fun. J.J. Weatherholt, two for five, two doubles and an RBI.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Look out now. Look out now. You're starting to see J.J. Weatherholt, hitting with authority to the opposite field, which is what he was doing in the minors when he was lighting it up for Springfield and Memphis. Now, a couple of weeks ago, what was he doing a lot of? Rolling over on the ball and dragging them down to the first base side of the infield,
Starting point is 00:18:06 and they were easy outs, scrouting out to the second baseman, first baseman, not a lot of, you know, exit velocity. He was rolling over on pitches. Now you're seeing him smash the hell out of them to left field. And that is when J.J. Weatherholt is at his best, when he's doing that. I don't know how many times I watch film on him. in Memphis and in Springfield. And when he was going good, almost everything was opposite field.
Starting point is 00:18:33 It was center field to left field is where he was doing all of his damage. And if they pitch him in, he pulls it when he needs to. But everything else was going left field, center field, and that's what he looks like right now. He's locked in at the moment. And the defense continues to be far better than I ever could have imagined. You know, this is a guy who played shortstop 90% of his life and has moved over. to second base at the major league level and looks fantastic. He's got range.
Starting point is 00:19:02 He's making good throws. He's making smart decisions. This dude is so much fun to watch. He is so much fun to watch. Yvonne Herrera, two for four in this one, another walk, two runs scored. He's got his average up to 248, which I know. Doesn't sound great on the surface, but he's hitting 318 over his last seven games. He was one of those guys that was hanging out below the Mendoza line for a while.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Alec Berlison hit his fourth home run of the season. And it was no, it was no like wall scraper at all. Like this was a bomb in that fifth inning off Bubba Chandler, an Apoc Taco Smash that went out to left center, 411 feet away opposite field power. Hit a double in that same area on Tuesday, but this time he's able to clear the wall and end up being a big run because the cardals ended up needing them all.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Outside of the burly home run, you love to see how the team is getting runners home in key situations without using the long ball. You know, in this one, you know, Urias walks in the third, tags on a fly ball to left field, gets to second. Like, can I, let me say that again, tags up on a fly ball to left field. Who does that? But he did it, the smart base running. And then JJ doubles him in. So if he doesn't tag on that previous play and move up, he probably doesn't score there.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Cardinals have been taking that extra base all season, and I love it. Seventh inning, Victor Scott, hit by a pitch when he squared around to Bunt. Thank you very much. Just put one of the fastest guys in the league on base. And what does he do? He goes to steal second and third,
Starting point is 00:20:42 which is what he can do when he gets on base. He's just got to get on there. Then with the infield pulled in, Herrera is able to get that single that doesn't make it out of the infield, but it gets knocked down by the second baseman, Brandon Lowe, but they can't get Victor at home. Yvonne's safe at first, put it in play.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Good things happen. And then Burley grounds out softly, puts it in play, though. And Yvonne makes it the second base safely. And Jordan Walker comes up with the big two-out single to left field scores Yvonne. Jordan takes second on a stupid throw home by the left fielder. Had no chance at getting Herrera. And Jordan took that second bag, was able to get up there. And, yeah, he got stranded.
Starting point is 00:21:22 But he put himself in scoring position by being smarter. than what the other team was doing. Like watching this team's awareness on the base paths has been a real treat. It's been a lot of fun. And how many times did we complain about bad fundamentals the last couple of seasons defensively running the base is just dumb errors and dumb mistakes? And this year has been totally different, totally different. Everyone's going to make mistakes from time to time.
Starting point is 00:21:52 But offensively, defensively, running the base. is they have just looked smarter than their opponent most days. Game probably shouldn't have been as tight as it was, but the pirates aren't, these guys aren't scrubs. These aren't your dad's pirates who used to get kicked around in the Central, man. This is a good team. Many think they're a playoff team,
Starting point is 00:22:13 that they're playoff caliber. And for the Cardinals to come into Pittsburgh and outplay them the last three days, has been a lot of fun to watch. Top of the order has been huge. First three games in the series, top four cardinal hitters, which is J.J. Yvonne, Burley and Walker, 15 for 45, 16 runs, 12 ribbies. It's getting it done. We're going to jump down to the farm next doubleheader for Memphis and another strong start by Bruce Zimmerman.

Starting point is 00:25:29 Thanks for making Locktown, Carnals, the first listen of the day. Thank you for making Lockdown on the number one sports podcast network. Memphis had a double header on Wednesday. They got rained out on Tuesday. So they're actually facing the Pirates as well. They're facing the Pirates, AAA affiliate known as the Indianapolis Indians. There are still Indians, apparently, in sports. In the three nothing game one victory, starting pitcher Bruce Zimmerman,
Starting point is 00:25:53 worked five and a third scoreless innings. He gave him five hits, struck out seven, walked none, yay. To move to three and O on the season. Now, Mr. Zimmerman here is the guy that we talked. about because he's a veteran. He is not on the 40 man, but he continues to perform quite well at AAA. And I can't help but wonder that he might be somebody who maybe can take on the Stephen Matt's role from the last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:26:24 He just kind of fits that mold. He's 31. Again, he's not a prospect. He's a 31-year-old veteran. And he hasn't had a whole lot of success in the big leagues. when he was with Baltimore or Milwaukee last year. But he's just a name that I want you to keep an eye on, all right? Certainly doesn't fit the rebuilding age group that the Cardinals have put together,
Starting point is 00:26:50 but you always need plenty of arms to get you through the season. And being left-handed doesn't hurt him at all either. And he's pitching well for Memphis. So just a name to keep in the background there, keep it in your back pocket. If you hear it again, you'll be like, oh, see? JD was talking about. Redbirds held the Indian scoreless through the first 11 innings of the devil header
Starting point is 00:27:09 until Indianapolis struck for five runs of the fifth inning of game two. Memphis got beat up in that one. Final score was nine to nothing. Starting pitcher Hansel Rincon, he was not the problem. Toss four scoreless innings in the spot start. Right-hander allowed three hits, walk none, struck out five, gets a no decision because the rest of the guys who came in were not very good. And the name of note here that got beat up pretty good is Matt Pushart.
Starting point is 00:27:33 the Rule 5 pick, who is still on his rehab assignment, eventually they're going to have to bring him back up. That's how this works. He got picked on for five runs, three of them earned on three hits, including a three-run homer. Eventually, he's got to come back to the active roster if they want to keep them. Now, they can decide, we're good.
Starting point is 00:27:53 And they can offer him back to the Marlins the way the Yankees did with Cade Winquist. So that's still a possibility. So if they don't want them anymore, he doesn't have to deal with the organization. They can offer him back. But not a good appearance here. Chris Roycroft gave up a run on two hits and two thirds of an inning. Jared Schuster got lit up for three runs on four hits, including another three run homer in one inning of work. So none of that really worked out.
Starting point is 00:28:20 It's not like these guys down at Memphis are having great seasons as far as the relief pitcher. So when you talk about, you know, bringing somebody else in other than. and Brul or Stannick when you're, you know, people are asking for that. Who? Who are you bringing it? And I know the answer is, we don't care for anybody, but it's not how it works. Elsewhere in the NL Central, the Reds got blasted by the Rockies. Thank you, Colorado, 13 to 2 in Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Cubs hung on to beat the Padres five to four. The Brewers got beat by the Diamondback, 6 to 2. Our old friend Nolan Aronado, it's a three-run dinger in the win. He has looked so much better in the last week or so. Nolan Aronado looks like old school Nolan Aronado. And I thought that it would work out for him in Arizona. You kind of hated to see him struggle as much as he was early on with them offensively. But he's turned things around in that Diamondbacks team.
Starting point is 00:29:13 You know, it's in a tough division in that NLS, but it certainly could be a wildcard team. That's for sure. Standings now in the central, Reds in first in 1911, Cubs in second and 19 and 12. Cardinals in third at 17. and 13 and 13, Brewer's 15 and 14, and the Pirates at 16 and 15. So everybody's still over 500. We can still claim we are the best division in baseball right now.
Starting point is 00:29:40 We might send somebody to 500 tomorrow if the Cardinals can finish off the Pirates. It won't be easy, though. Hunter Dobbins makes his Cardinals debut, excited to see him pitch, but he's got to go against all-world Paul Steins, who is awesome. And I know he's had six games against the Cardinals. He's 0 and 4 against the Cardinals in his career. So he is due. But the great part about this is they've already won the series.
Starting point is 00:30:06 All right. So whether or not Paul Skeens comes out and dominates or the Cardinals get to him again, we're looking good. You got to be impressed with the fact that you went into Pittsburgh and at least took three. But why settle, right? Let's just sweep them. Let's bring the brooms out. First pitch, it's an early one, 1135 St. Louis time.
