But the Cardinals did end up securing three deals at the deadline. And in return, they got four prospects.

Starting point is 00:00:54 They also got a veteran reliever plus a player to be named later. Now, when it comes to prospects, there are not many people out there that are, able to do a better job at breaking things down and who really study what the prospects are out there in minor league baseball. So that's why we brought him in here. We got our guy Tyler from Redbird Farm Hand here to hang out with us and give us a little inside scoop on what he thinks about the guys they got, how it affects the Cardinals farm system in general, like where they might rank and stuff in his opinion. And how soon maybe we see these guys at the big league level, which is what we're all excited about.

Starting point is 00:01:34 First off, Tyler, thanks for being impatient. Thanks for coming by, buddy. Let's start with the deal with Milwaukee, all right? So this was the one that I think if you had to judge the two big ones with Arizona, Milwaukee, Milwaukee might have the sexiest return. You're able to get a pair of outfield prospects, Alexander Friess and Josiah Ragsdale from the Brewers in exchange for Dustin May and Joe Joe Romero.

Starting point is 00:01:59 Just a quick tidbit, Frius, 18 years old. So super young, just got signed as an international free agent last year. Ranks is the top 100 prospect by three different publications and the number eight prospect in the brewer's system per baseball America. Ragsdale, 22 years old, ranks as Milwaukee's number 22 prospect by baseball America. Your thoughts on this deal. And were you worried that Dustin May wasn't going to kind of get what we hoped we were going to get? But did this satisfy you? this this satisfied me right and there was some worrying especially with some of the other guys

Starting point is 00:02:36 going off the board that were somewhat similar to dust in may you know you look at a a guy like even like the kevin gossman deal was kind of like it felt like before the the may deal like i was like maybe we get like a number 20 prospect or you know number 25 prospect for dustin may but but to get you know their 11th and their 13th by pipeline eighth and 22nd by baseball America is really fun. And I mean, Arra, or Alexander Frius, sorry,

Starting point is 00:03:05 I'm getting so many names mixed up in my head. I looked with so many different names when these traits come out. You're looking down the whole farm list, right? And you're just looking and really such, like, which name's what I want, right? Frios is really 18 years old, already up to a 117 mile an hour EV. Now, that's,

Starting point is 00:03:20 that's fun. You don't have very many 18-year-olds, like I hit the ball 117 miles an hour. I mean, Rayneal Rodriguez, the carton's top prospect who's supposed to have a ton of tower didn't even hit that as an 18 or as an 18 year old last year. So I mean, that's really impressive. And there are some concerns in his game, right? There's obviously some chase, you know,

Starting point is 00:03:38 so he's not the perfect guy when it comes to, he makes contact, but there's some chase in the game. And then there's a lot of on the ground balls. Like there's a lot of ground balls when it comes to his game. So he does have a little bit of that early Jordan Walker syndrome, if that makes sense. Like the swing's not exactly made for the loft.

Starting point is 00:03:54 But, you know, he's 18 years old. You can switch that, especially with the guy this young. Like, if he gets the ball in there, more consistently. Like this guy's going to be a really good hitter. He probably more sticks in a corner outfield than he has a center fielder. And it's just interesting because like the arm's going to stick. The athleticism is good enough that's going to stick. So he's a project, but it's a guy who has a ton of upside if the cardinals can, you know, maximize that. Yeah. And, you know, international

Starting point is 00:04:17 scouting is something that, you know, Heinbloom has really talked about a lot. He's like, you look, we really got to start to bear down on this. And we've seen the brewers be very successful with what they do with their international pool money and finding, you know, great guys like, you know, like, uh, who, who's like Churio, Jackson Churio, like just, just off the top of Jackson Churio. Like they, they got him and they just do a really good job. Milwaukee's got, uh, one of the better scouting systems. And so, uh, for them to be high on him. And this is, you know, Milwaukee arguably the best farm system in baseball right now. Some people have them ranked as number one. And to, uh, to get two top 15 guys from them in,

Starting point is 00:04:57 in return for a couple of rentals is pretty good. I feel like Heim did a good job there. I don't know how hectic it got, whether there were other teams that were in on Dustin May or Jojo Romero. And when you hear about a trade in the division, you're kind of like, uh-oh, like, dude, we really want to help the enemy. But it's just a rental where these guys could be somebody

Starting point is 00:05:18 who are going to be part of the Carls organizations for five, 10 years maybe, while Dustin May and Jojo probably aren't sticking around Milwaukee. The odds aren't good that ended up resigning there. So, but yeah, 18 years old for the first kid. And then Ragsdale, who's older at 22, which is funny to say, because that's not old at all, obviously. Two years old. But what do you like about his game?

Starting point is 00:05:40 He's been a breakout star for Milwaukee this year between high A and double A over in over in 1,000 OPS on the season, 19 homers. Now, this is a guy who didn't have much power in college was kind of projected to be like more of an average power guy. but, you know, Milwaukee and their elite development system was able to get the most out of this guy's already hit 19 homers. He's striking out a little bit, but he doesn't chase. So it's a little bit of end zone width and he takes a lot of walks. So he's kind of a more like three true outcome guy kind of hits a lot of homers and obviously he's going to pull the ball in the air a lot.

Starting point is 00:06:12 So he does a lot of things the Cardinals like and kind of even targeted in this draft. I mean, you look at a guy like an Andrew Williamson, like they're somewhat similar profiles. 70 grade runner, he's already got over 30 stolen bases. this year, I think it's 31. Like, so this guy's going to patrol center field and he's going to join a double a team that includes Ty Pete and Wambinchot in the outfield. Like, that's an elite outfield. Like, you're not going to find an outfield in minor league baseball much better than those three right there.

Starting point is 00:06:36 Yeah. How disgusting is that Springfield team right now with not only the offensive side, but now the pitching side of things that they've been able to, you know, calling people out with Tanner Franklin going up. That's just dirty down there at Springfield, bro. They're not, no one, I don't know how people are going to beat him. And they're going to maybe get a second chance at, you know, at a championship. They got it last year.

Starting point is 00:06:57 And, I mean, the team shaping up as a good enough point. I mean, you got Hazus Baia is there still. Like there's a lot of talent in that roster. And I think it's going to be fun to watch them through the second half and see if they can, you know, potentially win a back-to-back Texas League title. Yeah. And, you know, when Heim Bloom came on and he was talking about a winning window and we all knew that this year was not supposed to be the opening of that window yet.

Starting point is 00:07:21 and they've exceeded expectations, but he always was targeting. He always said it was like, you know, we're thinking about 28, 29, and you're seeing these guys who are at Springfield now, that's kind of, you know, the schedule they're on where they, you know, they get another year, you know, some will stay at Springfield next year, some will come up to AAA and then the eventual graduation to the major league level. And I love that they're all playing together and they're all going to grow up together and eventually impact the major league roster at the same time, dude.

Starting point is 00:07:49 It's fun. Would you say that Springfield is the Dodgers of AA baseball right now? I would. I would. Now, we got them through, like, people are going to get mad at Dodgers because they sign a bunch of people. But, like, it's just a stacked roster, right? Like, you're not going to find much better talent. You're going to face a top 30 pitcher in the system every night, pretty much as a starter.

Starting point is 00:08:13 And then you're going to have to go through five or six, you know, top 30 prospects on the hitting side. So it's like, just kind of crazy what, what, what the. Springfield roster looks like right now. Yeah, it's a lot of fun to see them building it. And, you know, and you never know if these guys are going to make it or not. But right now, things are a lot of fun at Springfield and at Memphis. Like, there's just a lot of talent throughout this organization right now. And it's, it's exciting. It's exciting to have it there. What would you give? And I hate to put you on the spot here, but what kind of grade, because we don't know how good these guys going to be one day. But as far as what you got in

Starting point is 00:08:45 return, in your opinion, what kind of grade would you give this trade with Milwaukee, just based on who they were able to pick up. Probably like an A minus, right? Like the market didn't shape up well for them to get like a top 10 guy, right? Yeah. Because like the market was a little weak. But considering it's two rentals, like to get two guys who have some power and have some potential, like it could have been a lot worse.

Starting point is 00:09:11 So I think giving it an A, especially when you compare it to what the rest of the deals around the league were, like, I think an A minus is kind of like the right. I was thoroughly pleased with what when it came across. I was like, whoa, I did not see. I thought it was going to be kind of more like what the Newport trade was where it was like, you know, one pretty good guy and then, you know, it falls off a little bit from there. But we're going to talk about that trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. New Park heading out to Arizona to join our friend Nolan Arnado, which he posted about that or he was like, ha, that that trade went through and he's getting his buddy back. Starting point is 00:13:22 Let's talk about the next deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. They acquire minor league prospects, Daniel Egan, Sandro, Santana, and a player to be name later in exchange for outfielder large new bar egan's 23 years old ranked by mlb pipeline as Arizona's number five prospect and number 13 by baseball america santana 21 years old ranked by mlb pipeline as arizona's number 26 prospect uh we don't know about the player to be named later which uh you know we'll figure it out at some point but uh your initial thoughts on that deal because that one was kind of late like you know Lars newpar was there at batting practice at yankee stadium and all of a sudden he got pulled back he was in the lineup and gets pulled back and he's given

Starting point is 00:14:00 hugs to people and everybody's like, uh-oh, where's he going? There was, uh, rumors that maybe it was San Diego, but it ends up being Arizona and you get Egan's and you get Santana. Your thoughts on this trade just from the, the very time it happened. Egan's interesting, right? Like, he's a high, it's different because the carnals have been targeting low slot righties and lefties for most of the draft. Like, they want guys whose fastballs work really good at the top of zone with low slots. And This guy is the exact opposite, right? Very high slot. It's similar almost to like a tray of savage.

Starting point is 00:14:36 And because it's a really big fastball in terms of the movement. Now it's like 92 to 94. It can touch 96. It's like the velocity. If it can tick up just a little bit more, that'd be ideal. And then it's a splitter and a curveball. But everything moves to his, let me make sure of this right. Everything moves to his arm side.

Starting point is 00:14:55 Nothing moves to his glove side. So like there's no slider in this in this mix. nothing, you know, going to the left. So that makes it really interesting because it's, it's, it's similar to Travis Savage in that way, but he's had a little bit of trouble, you know, at double A. Some of that's because he pitches in Amarillo, which is a really heavy hitters park. I think the average ERA there for a starter is like five, four. It's like the fact that he's like a four nine.

Starting point is 00:15:19 Like you're not, you're not going to. It looks bad on paper when you're just looking at like the ERA, but like that's a lot better than people think. He strikes out a lot of guys, gets a lot of whiff. He doesn't walk a lot of guys, but he doesn't throw like a pitchers in the zone. It's kind of weird. He just gets a lot of chase. Like a lot of people are just chasing outside the zone against him.

Starting point is 00:15:37 So he doesn't walk that many people despite not throwing that many pitches in the strike zone very often. So he's an interesting pitcher. Probably profiles more as like a back end starter than a, you know, a guy that's going to be a two or a three for you. But he's an interesting shot. And for like, knowledge new bar, like that's a good starting piece. And then Santana's super interesting. Like 0.57 ERA since coming up to double A is walking about 10% of the batter striking out about 35% fastball's 97 to 98 can touch 99 it's got a wipeout slider that's probably better than the

Starting point is 00:16:07 fastball to be honest with you and he profiles as a reliever from the left side that you know maybe could be a seventh eighth ninth inning guy for you down the road so um those are two really interesting pieces for large new bar it's a little light like you might want to see i mean you wish this player to be named later was someone you know in between those two guys but if it's a non top 30 guy that's somewhat interesting. Like it's still going to be a solid deal. Yeah, I mean, you're getting three guys for a Lars Newpar who, you know, we all love Newt because he's a great dude.

Starting point is 00:16:37 And, you know, you see the analytics and all of his baseball savon stuff's in red. And you're like, wow. But how good is he really? I mean, he's, he's hurt a lot. And it just never, it just never worked, really that I was never overwhelmed by the Lars Newpar experience. Love them as a dude. I feel like he's the.

Starting point is 00:16:57 the best dude you could possibly meet, I just didn't see how he was ever going to be enough to push this team to the next level. And when you got somebody like, you know, Joshua Baez waiting in the wings at AAA with 32 bombs, like, you know, eventually, and it was one thing is like when this offseason when they started moving on from people,

Starting point is 00:17:14 and people are getting bummed about it because these are familiar names and people they've liked for a few years. And it's the same thing with Newpar, but I'm like, eventually you've got to move on from these guys, though, because they've never won anything together. And it's like, they're not going to. So it's time to turn the page and say goodbye and let them move on with their careers. And now we get more youth here in St. Louis. And I'm excited about it. And what were

Starting point is 00:17:40 your thoughts on the fact that they went double hitter in the Milwaukee one and then double pitcher in the Arizona deal? Did you like how they kind of separated those? I like that. mainly because I think when you look at the strength of each system, right, like Arizona's strength as a system is pitching pretty much. And then you look at the strength of the Milwaukee system, and it's young hitters with, you know, upside. So I think they were able to dip into strengths of both systems. And teams aren't going to give up weaknesses in their systems

Starting point is 00:18:09 because they probably only got a few of those guys. So like if Milwaukee was really heavy on pitching and, you know, Friess and, you know, Ragsdale were two of their only good hitters. Like they probably wouldn't have gave up those two guys. or if, you know, the Diamondbacks were a little weak on pitching, like they would have given up Egan because Egan's are really promising arm that projects to be in the MLB one day. So like, like, I don't know.

Starting point is 00:18:32 I feel like the way they balance that was as good as they could, right? Like, it's hard to tell, right? You'll never get enough pitching and obviously you service a need in the outfield, even though you've got some guys that are outfielders. But, you know, everybody always freaks out because they're like, oh, my gosh, you know, why do we need all these outfits? well, you can move them and trade them and do stuff with them down the line. So, you know, what if, what if they don't sign Jordan Walker do a big deal?

Starting point is 00:18:57 What if this is a flash in the pan year for them? Like, we still haven't found a center field or worth of crap, you know, we're still working on that, you know. What happens if Joshua Bias fails at the major league? We don't know. It could happen. So it never hurts to have a talent like that they brought in. And I like that they kind of spread it out a little bit. The third deal that they made had to do with a veteran pitch.

Starting point is 00:19:19 or Caleb Ferguson. It was another deal inside the division with the Cincinnati Reds, international cap space and get Ferguson, who's been a veteran of eight major league seasons, came up with the Dodgers, 6-3-225. He's been with a lot of teams, been around the block a little bit, Dodgers, Yankees, Astros, Pirates, Mariners, Reds, 26 games this season, 1-0, 4.01, ERA, 24-and-two-thirds innings pitch, started the season on the I-L. I think he had like an oblique issue early on, which we all know how long that stuff takes. So your thoughts on them getting a Caleb Ferguson deal and getting a veteran lefty in here to help after trading one and Jojo Romero. Yeah, I think, you know, unfortunately, the Bryson Mott's transition to the bullpen hasn't went as smoothly as the Cardinals probably would have liked.

Starting point is 00:20:06 So I feel like it's it's kind of necessary to just kind of pick up Ferguson. Hopefully he can give you something decent out of the bullpen, you know, for the rest of this year. He's a free agent after this year. So it's not like you're tied to this guy for five, six years. You're just this year just to kind of give them a bullpen arm. And the Cardinals had over a million dollars left in international bonus pool money. So like they aren't going to spend that all this season. Like you rarely see teams spend all of their, you know, if they have over a million by this point.

Starting point is 00:20:32 Because about 90% of your international bonus pool money goes like right at that beginning phase, right at, you know, January 15th when all those guys can sign. So, you know, they weren't going to spend that money. So you might as well, if, you know, the Reds have a guy that they want and they need that 250, like you can give them the 250 and get your reliever. And hopefully, I mean, I just think it's a little bit of assigned to like the team that like, we're not totally giving up on you guys this year. Like we're going to help you guys a little bit by, you know, giving you some sort of bullpen help here, not,

Starting point is 00:21:01 not totally like abandoning this season. So I think it tries to send a little bit of a message from High Bloom to the team of like, we're trying to compete just a little bit here towards the end. We're not totally giving up on you guys. Yeah. Yeah. And that's what he's always said. He's like, no, we want to win here.

Starting point is 00:21:14 But we understand what the real goal is is it's about the future. And these guys weren't going to be a part of that future. And they're not another that says that you can't try to resign to us in May in the off season if you want to. If he had such a good time in St. Louis and wants to come back, you can still do that if you want to. Same with Jojo. But, you know, Newt's got a couple of years left that he'll spend out there with Arizona. But overall, what do you think about the trade? The dollars Newport one, what would you give a grade on that one?

Starting point is 00:21:42 Probably like a B minus. Like, you would have hoped for something better. especially because of the underlying stats and you would hope someone maybe would have bet on that a little bit more. But I think if you would have kept until the off season, you were going to get something similar or worse, right? Like even a one year less of control, obviously the CBA uncertainties. Like you don't even know if he's going to play 100 games next year, 120, you know, no games at all. Like if you trade them in the off season, you're obviously taking that risk. So, I mean, I think they found a deal that they thought was adequate enough and they took it.

Starting point is 00:22:15 So. Yeah. Yep. All right. Well, that's what the Cardinals did at the trade deadline this year. How do you see these guys lining up with the rest of the prospects in the Cardinal system? I haven't seen an updated list or anything just yet, but how high up in the top 30 do you think these guys will be? I saw Pipeline just updated their list for the Milwaukee trade.

Starting point is 00:22:36 And they had Free us at four and they had Ragsdale at 10. So, I mean, those are two very, I mean, I'm not going to say my got, I'm not going to say my list is going to have those two guys that high. but I think both will fit in that, you know, 8 to 15 range, kind of like where they were in Milwaukee. Like, it's just a super strong system right now. And I mean, there might be a guy who's not on the top 30 list that's going to be an impactful major league player or there's going to be guys, you know, that are in the 20 to 25 range that are going to be solid, you know, number five starters for the Cardinals for three, four, five years. So it's just there's a lot of depth right now. And you can nitpick where you want to put these guys, but they're all very talented and they're all, you know, in good spots. And I think Egan's probably going to be a top 10 pitcher for me.

Starting point is 00:23:19 He's probably going to be around that gerangelo, Sanger range. Nice. I'm loving everything. I'm here in Tyler. This is making me happy. I think this has been, uh, at least on paper, right? Successful trade deadline for Heim Bloom and his first time in the big chair where, uh, he was in charge of the show. So, uh, I think it, I think it was good. I was pleased with it. And, uh, like we said, you know, it was a, you had to be patient. You had to wait. But, uh, eventually they got some stuff done. and it was the guys that we thought were going to get traded. So I think it all worked out.

You know, it used to be Newton News. I wasn't with them, you know, quite that far back. But, you know, they knew the time was eventually going to come. So they had to make the switch.

Starting point is 00:24:36 You know, they wanted to have some long-term stability. And I don't think you could have Newton News in Arizona unless they wanted to go become an Arizona. than a Diamondbacks podcast. Yeah. It would have made a whole lot of sense. So it was time to retire it. I understand. All right, Tyler.

Starting point is 00:28:03 a lot on Cardinals for first list of the day. Thank you for making a lot on the number one sports podcast network. What a wild game on Monday night of Yankee Stadium. Cardinals end up beating New York 13 to 7. The offense got going early against Yankees ace Cam Schlittler of all people. They wanted more unhittable pitchers in all of baseball who had some command issues. He walks five. So credit to the Cardinals for not being overly aggressive.

Starting point is 00:28:26 He allows four runs on four hits in just three innings. The Cardinals would jump out to a six to nothing lead thanks to not one, but two. two run shots by Alec Berlinson. And at that point, everything seemed to be going smoothly. And it looked like the Cardinals might coves to a victory. But if you've ever watched a game at New Yankee Stadium, you know, the ball flies out of the ballpark. What I tell you in our last episode, I was like, look, I know the Cardinals haven't been hitting

Starting point is 00:28:51 home runs. The Yankees haven't been hitting home runs either. It's going to, the scoreboard is going to get lit up in the next couple of days. Watch it. And that's exactly what happened. Michael McGreeby gets to start last four and a third innings. He allows his two runs on that two run blast by Austin Wells, but the pitch count was up.

Starting point is 00:29:06 I think he was at 91. So it's six to two. Ali says, all right, we're cool. Let's go to the ballpen. He calls on Justin Broll. That doesn't go great. He gives up a solo shot to Trit Grisham. Ryan Stannick comes in next and things got really bad.

Starting point is 00:29:21 The score went from six to three and really took a bad turn because the Yankees blast two dingers and a double off of them in the four batters he sees. Two home runs and a double. George Soriano comes on next. Feels like he's pitched every game since the All-Star break. Comes in and tries to clean it up. He serves up a two-run standard new Yankee Luis Garcia Jr., which is great for my fantasy team.

Starting point is 00:29:43 Not great for me as a Cardinals fan. And New York grabs a 7 to 6 lead, and it felt like Arizona all over again. But this time, the offense did not fall into a shell. Instead, they come right back. And I promise you, if I have to hear every time they get punched, they'll punch right back. If I got to hear that on the telecast again, come up with something new.

Starting point is 00:30:04 All right. It's driving me nuts. Come up with a new analogy for it all. But Blaze Jordan leaves off with a triple off the wall and center. Mason Wynn walks and then Nathan Church. My guy hasn't been hitting great. Turns on one, smacks a three run shot, makes it nine to seven. He had a big night.

Starting point is 00:30:21 Jose for mean singles. And then Jimmy Crooks launches one into the night. Super high bomb on that one. Two run shot makes it 11 to 7. And then with JJ on, it's Alec Burles. and once again, his third of the night, the deepest one of the night as well. 418 feet makes it 13 to 7. That's how it would wrap up.

Starting point is 00:30:40 Burley is your player of the game. Three bombs, number 16, 17, and 18, six RBIs. He's now among all first basemen. He's got the third best batting average and his third in RBIs. He just does not get a lot of credit. And he deserves it. And this was a huge night. Nathan Church, two for three, four RBIs.

Starting point is 00:30:59 The two teams combined for 10 total home runs. tied for the most in one game at New Yankee Stadium. I don't know how many of them would have went out at Bush Stadium. The last one from Burley, surely would have. But I don't know how many of the other nine would have made it out of Bush Stadium. But man, was that entertaining to watch. These two offenses slugging it out over nine innings. That was a lot of fun.

Starting point is 00:31:19 Gristhel gets to win with two shutout innings and relief. And Cardinals moved to one game under 500. Hunter Dobbins is back with the team.
