So the Cardinals made some moves on Tuesday.
Yeah.
And those moves got a little bit of attention, some important names.
were moved around.
The team activated Matt Carpenter from the injured list.
Good for Matt.
They recalled Luke and Baker from Memphis.
They granted Brandon Crawford is unconditional release
and then option Jordan Walker back to Memphis.
Now, my initial thoughts when this happened,
the Brandon Crawford thing long overdue.
Long overdue.
And again, this is nothing personal against Brandon Crawford
from everything I've heard, everyone I loved him in the clubhouse.
It's nothing like that.
It's just the dude hasn't been a factor on the field, which is where you need him.
Not at all, really, this season, to be honest.
Sure, he had a couple of fill-ins here and there.
But, I mean, overall, what was Brandon Crawford doing on this team?
You know, I understood why they signed him in spring training.
They wanted an insurance policy in case Mason win.
faltered and wasn't ready.
They just were backing themselves up, which is fine.
I'm totally fine with that.
But Mason Wynn took control of that shortstop position a long time ago,
where you're like, all right, he's fine.
We can trust him.
He's cool.
All right.
And there was little use for Brandon Crawford anymore.
Not great defensively anymore at this point in his career.
Left-handed bat off the bench got a thousand of those guys.
So his spot was needed for someone who can help
team against lefties, something that was an obvious need a very, very long time ago,
but the Cardinals refused to release Brandon Crawford for whatever reason.
And now it's too late in the season for this move right now to really make an impact,
something they could have used months ago.
But they waited and waited, just bad management.
Lucan Baker gets another shot.
Good for Lucan.
All right.
We've talked about this before.
I've caught a lot of flack from people.
Luke and Baker is a 4A player.
He's not good enough to be in the major leagues.
He's great for AAA.
People have made up their minds after what, like 100 of bats at the major league level
that Luke and Baker is apparently not a major league heater.
Apparently you guys are amazing scouts.
You should be running the show.
You should be a scout for one of these major league baseball teams because you know
after 100 bats that this guy's trash.
A lot of these people are the same people.
that told me that Mason Wynn was never going to be a good Major League hitter.
Then Alec Berluson would never be a good Major League hitter.
Now, I haven't heard a whole lot from them about Mason Winn and Alec Berluson this year,
but I'm sure they're out there breathing heavily somewhere.
Lucan Baker hit 33 home runs at Memphis last year.
He hit 32 this year.
He's earned a second look.
Paul Goldschmidt's impending free agency.
We think that the Cardinals,
knowing who they are will probably offer Paul Goldschmidt something to stick around for another
year or two, whether we like it or not.
But if you decide, okay, maybe we don't.
Maybe we've seen enough of Paul.
Thank you for all your time with us.
Time to move on.
You want to know if Lucan Baker is actually good enough to be a major league hitter, don't you?
So you got to give them some time.
Be nice to do that.
Wouldn't hurt to see what you got in your own system before you start making more decisions about spending more money to fill that hole.
Now we all think Alec Berlinson is likely your first basement of the future, but he's not that great against left-handed pitching, at least not this year.
So what do you do in those situations?
Well, that's where somebody like a Luca Baker, who hits lefties very, very well would probably come into play.
And guess how much money that'll cost you?
Not a lot.
Now, I don't know if he's going to be a good major league hitter.
I don't.
I have no idea, but I'm not going to cast judgment yet.
Some guys blossom late.
He's 27.
I know that.
Didn't look great last year when he was out with the club.
I know that, but maybe second time around, things will click and things will go better.
What do you get to lose at this point, right?
Obviously, the move that sent people over the edge was Jordan Walker.
Now, when the St. Louis Cardinals announced that they were calling up their former top prospect and first round pick Jordan Walker.
A lot of us got very excited.
I was one of them.
Walker is supposed to be the next big thing for the Cardinals.
What Mason Wendon is doing this year for this team is what Jordan Walker was supposed to be doing for this team as well.
They were supposed to be doing it together.
It was going to be kind of a combo meal, right?
We were going to have a both up and they were going to be doing awesome things for us.
giving the team not only a glimpse of, you know,
what their present-day skills are right now,
but what they can provide in the future.
I mean, they're supposed to get better as time goes on,
which isn't something that has happened a whole lot in the St. Louis
Cardinal system recently.
But, you know, the idea is that Jordan Walker would take that next step
after having a very successful second half of the season last year.
Mason, when, you're hoping after this solid season that he's having this year,
will make that next step and become even better in 2025.
These are two of the big pieces that are supposed to lead your franchise for the next decade.
They're supposed to be the cornerstones.
You know the story.
Jordan Walker had a tough start to the year, got sent down, didn't produce all that much at Memphis.
Things weren't working out all that well.
And then he catches fire, started mashing balls, and then Carpenter's injury, opened up a spot.
So they called them up.
And I think a lot of us expected him to play every day because this offense just needed an injection of life and something.
And if Jordan Walker could do the things he was doing in Memphis and take that up to the major league level, then yes, perfect, right?
I mean, you don't bring them up to the major leagues again just to use them off the bench, right?
Well, the Cardinals didn't feel that way either.
They didn't like either of those options.
Instead, they wanted to put him into a platoon role where he would be in the lineup against left-handers and then come off the bench against right-handers.
This is exactly what they told us they were going to do when the transaction occurred.
This was not a secret.
None of us should have been surprised that that's how they were using Jordan Walker.
I mean, they told you at the beginning that that's what they were going to do.
So for those of you who are acting shocked that this is what happened,
must not have been paying attention when it did happen,
which means you need to start listening to Lockdown Cardinals a little bit more
because we fed you that information, that that's how they planned on using him.
Now, was that the right thing to do?
That is where you can question, but they told you what the plan was.
and there are plenty of fans and critics who thought this was a foolish point,
considering that Walker's numbers are actually better against right-handed pitching than against left-handers.
But it shows you just how bad everything was against left-handers in general where they're like,
well, this is kind of, I mean, we need somebody.
And I, for one, have said since, you know, opening day last year that if you're not going to play Jordan Walker every day,
that you shouldn't have him on your major league roster.
Every day, or you'll back me up on this.
I for sure said that over and over and over and over again.
Sitting on the bench, not playing is not going to help his development whatsoever.
He's a young man.
He's to play every day to get better.
How is he supposed to work on the things that he's supposed to be working on
if he's not playing in game situations and doing it against live pitchers?
Not your own teammates throwing live batting practice.
This is not that. Real games. Real opponents. The Cardinals had other thoughts, as reported by Katie Wu from the athletic in a last-ditch effort to try and save the season. The team thought that perhaps Walker could help them at this point of the season in this type of platoon role.
I'm going to share her thoughts on the matter with you next because she explains it all pretty well.
And whether you agree with it or you don't, this was the plan.
They never said it wasn't going to be the plan, but it's got a lot of people upset.
So after you hear it, maybe you'll change your mind just how angry you are about things.
Maybe it won't change your mind at all.
But she explains it very, very well in a recent article on the athletic, which I will have linked in the description for you.
I want you to go check it out for yourself.

Because I know there's some people who are upset about all of this. I think it was a huge
mistake to use Jordan Walker the way that they did. But this was the plan. And I want to,
I want to explain it to you how their thought process was about this. And maybe it'll calm me down
a little bit. Maybe it will enrage you even more. So Katie Wu from the athletic,
has been on the show before, knows the ins and outs of everything that's going on, tried to clarify
a few things because there was a lot going on yesterday where president of baseball operations,
John Moseilak, he met with the media after all these.
moves were made and people were wondering whether or not there was now this like disconnect between he
and manager ali marmal right mode told the media you know my philosophy has always been if you're a
young player you need to be playing and i always cringe at the idea of someone who's 22 years old
sitting on the bench that phrase right there sent everyone into a frenzy because jordan walker was
not playing every day he just so happens to be a 22 year old
who had been sitting on the bench against right-handed pitchers.
So that made everybody think like, oh, my gosh, there is a crack in the foundation here, man.
They are not getting along.
Moseilock brought Walker up to play every single day.
Ali said, no, screw you, John Moseilock, and was doing whatever he wanted to do and
refuses to put Walker in the lineup against right-handers just despite Mo.
And that really wasn't the case.
It really wasn't, you guys.
I know we're trying to come up with drama because some people are trying to end this regime.
And that's fine.
But that's not the case.
That is not the case.
And she explains it very, very well in this article.
Again, it is posted in the description.
Go read it for yourself and all its glory.
It's good.
But I'm going to give you a few excerpts from it here so that we can get you through this.
All right. So here's what Katie Wu says. This is the thought process for Ali and Mo.
The Cardinals were slated to face three left-handed starting pitchers over seven days,
and their abysmal season-long production against left-handers underscored the need for a right-handed bat.
Those options were Jordan Walker, Luke and Baker, and Jose Fermin.
Vermin can play around the diamond, but the Cardinals weren't looking for defensive versatility.
They were looking for power in production. Baker's 32 home runs at Memphis made him a logical choice,
but St. Louis preferred to call up an outfielder to help with overall lineup flexibility
as they wanted to platoon the outfield. That left Walker who had caught fire over the last two weeks.
Platooning Walker was not something that Moseiloc and Marmal disagreed on, but only because they
would be implementing it for such a short time. Both Marmal and Moseiloc believe that young players
should be playing every day, especially those as promising as Walker. That's why, when
the new week started with the Cardinals in line to face right-handed starters for eight of their
next 10 games, Moseilock decided to send Walker back to Memphis. Walker would not be starting
against any Ritees and would be relegated as a benchback. That role was better suited for
Baker because of his aforementioned defensive limitations. Walker would go back to Memphis
where he would resume playing every day. That is the explanation. There is not a riff.
between manager Ali Marmal and president of baseball operations,
John Moseilock.
It would make no sense whatsoever for them just to all of the sudden disagree
on what's going on with this franchise,
despite the fact that they're losing and none of it's working,
but those two are like this.
You can't see it unless you're watching YouTube,
but I've got my fingers crossed here.
That's how they are.
They talk to each other all the time.
they are very much in communication.
Like the fact that Ali would just go up off the reservation and just do whatever
to go rogue against what John Moseilac wants him to do would make no sense at this point.
That's the guy that's had his back the whole time.
That's the guy that took the blunt of the problems from last year and took the blame for it.
That's the guy who just signed him to an extension.
Why or why?
Would you think all of a sudden, Ollie would just go, nope.
I'm on my own.
I am Maverick now.
No, no, no.
As much as you want to make that an interesting story,
that is not what happened.
Now, you can disagree with their thought process
and be like, what are you idiots?
Why would you bring up this guy for just a couple of days,
send him back when you have Baker?
Like, you can disagree with that.
And that's perfectly good and normal.
Like that makes all the sense in the world.
A lot of people are just saying like, yeah,
that was just a dumb move in general, but they agreed with each other.
They're like, okay, let's just do this for now.
So now that we have the explanation, how do you feel about it?
Are you still as angry?
Because my first thought is, bad idea, yeah.
But if this was the intention the entire time, whether you agree with it or not,
I really just hope that this was explained crystal clear to Jordan Walker that that was what was going on.
I hope that they communicated with Jordan Walker and told him what his purpose was going to be
and didn't just leave him in the dark about his role on the team and how long he was going to be up on this team.
Because if that's what they were doing, if they were, excuse me, looking into the future,
they were like, just for this short period, this is what we need you for, all right?
And then we're going to send you back so that you can continue to work on, you know,
but John Moseylock says his approach, his swing.
If they explain that all to him, then that's a good thing.
I hope that he knew that this wasn't a permanent situation.
And that playing every day was still the right thing for him
and that when the quick stretch was over, that he'd go back to Memphis.
And I hope he wasn't caught off guard by the quick demotion,
where it was like, well, you're a failure.
You went one for 13.
You still suck.
We're sending you back to Memphis.
this. I hope it didn't come off that way. I hope they told him in advance. Like, look,
seven days, we'll get you back there. We want you playing every day and keep doing what you were
doing. All right. But we just need you for this short period of time. And Katie Wu says it in
her article where like it was one of the few times where the Cardinals were kind of pressing,
where they need wins now. And they, you know, that kind of truels. And they, you know, that kind of
trumped that week of development with Jordan Walker, that they were willing to take that risk
so they can win some games because they weren't ready to give up on the season yet.
It didn't work.
It backfired.
They got blasted in Cincinnati.
They're not playing well against Milwaukee.
You know, Dodgers took two of them.
It didn't work.
But that was kind of one of their last ditch efforts to see if they could salvage anything from this 2024 season.
And what I think about, too, is like,
the fact that this is where we are with this team, this coaching staff and this front of office
and the season, it's just so disappointing.
You know, as a fan, like, yeah, I cover the team, but as a fan of this franchise,
this is the kind of stuff that we normally make fun of the other teams for.
And they're the ones we have to go through it, not the St. Louis Cardinals.
This isn't the franchise I've known and loved my whole life.
And no franchise is perfect.
They all go through ups and downs.
And as a Cardinal fan, be honest, we've gone through.
a lot more, like way more ups than we have downs.
But things have been trending in the wrong direction for a few years now.
It took a crazy 17-game winning streak to get them in the playoffs.
Then you had the weird firing of Mike Schilt.
So you're starting to see that brought up a lot because, you know,
how are the Padre's doing under Mike Schilt?
Pretty good. Pretty good.
Not so bad.
But the phrase philosophical differences is being thrown around a lot.
my cardinal nation and I don't blame you.
Have your fun with it.
You should.
You should question authority.
And then took Albert Pooholz, finding the fountain of youth, the race for 700 and the second
half to get them into the playoffs in 2022.
Remember, things weren't all that rosy at the All-Star break.
And then Poo-Holls just magically becomes amazing and becomes one of the greatest
hitters of all time once again, something he hadn't been in a very long time.
and carries them over the finish line.
They make the couple of trades to get Kintana and Montgomery,
and then they fall flat on their face in the playoffs.
It's swept out by the Phillies.
Last year, obviously horrible.
And then this year, they've run out of gas by the second half of the season,
something we all were kind of worried about because you got a lot of these older dudes on this team.
It's not a super youthful team, but,
And now they're likely not going to make the playoffs for a second straight year.
The architect for this has been John Moseylock, and we can bitch and moan about the De Wits,
not putting more money into the team, but in the end, it comes down to him making decisions
to build the roster with the money that he's got.
And he hasn't had much success at it recently.
The Michaelis and Matt Steele's have been terrible.
Young hitters have been shown the door prospered in other places.
and then the guys he keeps, they don't produce.
There's so much that is not working and it's outweighing any of the good things that he's done in the past.
Because until the last couple of years, John Moseilock, pretty good track record of winning and doing some smart things.
I mean, none of us complained about the Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Aronado deals.
Those seem pretty darn good.
But last couple of years, it's, what have you done for me now?
What have you done for me lately?
and it's ruining everything that he has done in the past.
And fans just wanted to be over.
They really do.
Like, I mean, I have not seen such a frustrated.
Like last year, I think everybody gave the cardals a pass.
We're like, all right, it's one year.
Let's work on it.
And then you saw the moves in the offseason and it excited nobody.
You know, again, Sunny Gray, good move.
But the other stuff.
same old, same old, man.
And it's a terrible
place to be in. All good
things come to an end, I guess. That's what
they say, right? And the Cardinal's ability to
sit among the top teams and organizations
in Major League Baseball has apparently
come to an end as well. Because things
are bad. They lost to get on Tuesday to the
Brewers in front of an announced attendance
of 30,022.
And there was not
that many people there by a long
shot. But just that
amount was the smallest crowd in the
history of Bush Stadium 3 that was not restricted because of COVID. Things are bad.
We're going to talk about Tuesday night's game next on Locked on Cardinals.

What about running backs?
What's Derek Henry going to be like this year with the Baltimore Ravens?
Is Justin Jefferson going to be the guy we're all used to in Minnesota?
soda now that he doesn't have a Kirk Cousins throwing him the ball.
So some interesting things out there.

description so you don't need to search anywhere. It's all part of the locked on podcast
network, your team every day. So your final score on Tuesday, three to two, but for those
of you who watched the game, the Brewers and starter Frankie Montas dominated them until you got
those late inning heroics by Matt Carpenter with the two-run pinch hit shot in the eighth inning.
Things got exciting in the ninth inning as the Cardinals threatened, but it was for not,
per usual, unable to drive runners in.
and when they're in scoring position.
Same Frankie Montas that they've seen twice already this year when he was with the Reds.
Pitched well against the Cardinals both times.
First time, first game, they beat him.
Three runs against him in six innings,
but he was much better against them the second time around.
And then last night, he was lights out against him.
But, you know, third time seeing a guy,
it shouldn't be a surprise to what he's going to come at you with.
It's not like he picked up a bunch of new pitches all of a sudden.
This was the first game, in fact, that he's gone past five.
since the Brewers got him at the trade deadline,
easily his most dominant game since coming to the Brewers.
Is it Frankie Montas or is it just this Cardinals' offense?
Because the offense is just bad.
It's just bad.
There isn't anything else to say about it anymore.
They're not good.
They're just not good.
John Denton brought up some of the issues yesterday,
threw some stats out.
Minus 62, run differential.
24th at MLB and runs scored.
21st and home runs.
19th in OPS.
They're just not good.
I mean, there's no real way to sugarcoat this anymore.
Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arnato,
Nolan Gorman, Lars Newport, Jordan Walker.
The people they entrusted to lead this offense this year have failed.
And miserably, these guys were supposed to be the heart of your order,
along with Wilson Contreras, who's held up his end of the bargain.
The rest of them just haven't delivered.
Goldie O for four strikes out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
Comes up.
Bases loaded, one out, completely overmatched by Devin Williams,
who is one of the best closing pitchers in baseball.
I'm going to be wrong.
But this is a situation where you're threatening.
This is one of those moments.
This is one of those times when your best hitters are supposed to come through.
Devin Williams on the ropes.
Goldie doesn't come through, strikes out.
and they interviewed him after the game.
And I want to give Paul Goldschmidt a hug, man.
He's broke up about how horrible his season has been.
You can hear it in his voice.
But these are grown men, and we can't feel sorry for him.
You know, he's getting paid $26 million to put the freaking ball in play.
And he hasn't done it enough this year.
He's been bad.
Speaking about putting it in play, Nolan Gorman, over four, three more strikeouts,
one being the final out of the game with the bases loaded.
So at this point, I feel sorry for Gorman, really,
because he goes up to the plate and he might as well not even have a bat anymore.
Like, it's so bad.
It's painful to watch, too.
Because you saw this guy had all this mystique and this power and, oh, my gosh,
all this talent.
You knew the strikeouts were coming, but we didn't know it was going to be like this.
I mean, his mechanics, they're all out of whack.
in the movie and I always think about when I see Aronado and I see Gorman and I've seen Goldschmidt go through where their swings just look so funky.
Like they just look weird.
It always takes me back to the movie Ten Cup with Kevin Costner who ends up getting the shakes.
If you remember in the movie, if you haven't seen it.
And his phrase was, my swing feels like an unfolded lawn chair.
Like they're just all like a mess.
and obviously Aronado has looked much better.
I don't think the swings Paul Goldschmidt took last night off the top of my head
were awful, but they just can't do it anymore.
They just can't catch up to the fastballs.
They just go right past him.
And that's kind of where Gorman is right now where, like, his swing is just all out of whack.
And major league pitches are just abusing him.
42 strikeouts in his last 98 at bats with just three home runs.
He's got no confidence up there.
He's pulling off the ball.
He's loading Zool-A.
It's an absolute mess.
And your St. Louis Cardinals haven't been able to fix him.
They haven't been able to fix anybody that has struggled this year.
I mean, at what point have you ever seen where you're like,
oh, there it is.
They finally have they figured it out.
No, the two guys that figured something out were Victor Scott and Jordan Walker at Memphis,
and then they come up to the major leagues and they go right back in the toilet again.
But Gorman just looks like he hates being there.
Like he doesn't even want to play baseball.
Doesn't even want to be at the ballpark.
And I know he's a laid back guy anyway.
So that's just me.
Like he just looks miserable.
He just looks miserable.
I'm not saying he hates baseball and doesn't want to be a cardinal.
I'm just saying he just looks miserable because he's frustrated because he can't figure out why all of a sudden.
He used to be really, really good.
And now he's not.
And he's confused and he doesn't get it.
I'm almost to the point where it's like,
I don't know how much damage we're doing to this guy.
Send him to Memphis then.
Let him go back down where there's no pressure whatsoever.
He doesn't have to worry about anybody complaining about him.
Let him go down there and figure it out.
Why not?
He's got options left.
I thought Thetty pitch fine, held them to two runs over five and two thirds.
They didn't hit him hard.
The Brewers had some hits that just found some grass when they needed to.
The walks hurt him.
He had four of those.
but no real complaints about Eric Fetty.
Defense was outstanding for the most part.
Great plays by Nato.
Newton win in this one.
The winning run, though,
scores one after a couple of guys got on base.
He had the infield single up the middle.
It was a tough play for Mason win.
It wasn't like it was easy.
And then the double that kind of went over Victor Scott's head,
kind of, you know, he didn't track it all that great.
And I think both Mason win and Victor Scott would say,
I should have made those plays because that's the kind of guys they are.
but they didn't. Brewers took advantage because that's what good teams do.
They score the run, give them a three to nothing lead.
Cardinals get the two run Jack from carp, but it's not enough.
Cardinals are now one and seven against Milwaukee.
12 games back in the division, six back in the wild card.
Injury updates, Lance Lynn, Stephen Matts are getting closer to returning.
The Brandon Crawford release has opened up a spot on the 40 man.
So you're assuming that it's for one of these guys that's going to be back at some point.
lend through a live batting practice session before the game yesterday.
We'll do so again next Monday.
Matt's is scheduled to be stretched out to about 90 pitches in a start on Wednesday night at Memphis.
So it sounds like he's coming back to the rotation.
That's the latest guys.
None of it's all that great.
They'll play again tonight.
Cal Gibson against another riding and Tobias Myers who shut down the Cardinals earlier this year.
Shocker.
First pitch will be at 645 St. Louis time.
It's a tough time of year for a team that, you know, we had a lot of expectations.
You know, it's not working out.
But I appreciate all of you who have stuck with me through all of this.
