Starting point is 00:00:00 Some updated news on Mason Wins' knee injury, which has many debating on whether or not he should even be playing anymore this season. This is Locked on Cardinals. Starting point is 00:00:43 about yesterday's topic surrounding hitting coach Bram Brown that we're going to unpack in our Cardinal Confessions, which we'll get to in segment three. We'll discuss the loss of the Mariners last night in which Randy a Rosa Raina basically bent the Cardinals over and spanked them like a toddler. But we will start with the news that came out after last night's game, late last night. And I want to apologize for the sound issues with the show the last couple of days. We worked out all the kinks we think. So we shouldn't sound like we're dying of tuberculosis like Doc Holiday or like I'm talking from a bathroom like we've had to deal with. So sorry for that. Sorry for the late start today. Had a job interview that involved an arena football team. All right.
Starting point is 00:01:25 So baseball time though now. So let's focus. Let's get into it last night after the game reported by multiple sources, including the athletics, Katie Wu, who's fantastic. Shortstop Mason Wynn, late scratch before the game last night, was dealing with a meniscus tear in his knee, and that is why he did not play last night. As we know, Mason Wynn has been dealing with a knee injury for a while. So that isn't new that he had a knee problem. It was just the detail about the knee injury is, something new that Winn has been dealing with for a lot of this season.
Starting point is 00:02:05 I think we all became more aware of it at the All-Star break. That's when things really started to come out that, you know, that's been bothering him. Outstanding at the, with his glove on the defensive side, all season long. But since the All-Star break, yes, he has started to regress at the plate a little bit. First half, he was hitting 255 and had seven home runs, 32 RBIs. And that was, I think, 84 games played. OPS plus at 95.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Still below league average. So you obviously want better results than that. But in the second half, things have dipped even further. Hitting 247 has the OPS plus of 74. And the knee is likely an issue that has something to do with that. You know, but despite having to deal with the pain and the discomfort, Mason wanted to be out there and keep playing. And Katie's story, which is linked in the description,
Starting point is 00:02:59 she points out that when will require our. arthroscopic surgery in the off season, but is expected to have a very normal winter per manager Ali Marmal. And the word is that Wynn will continue to play this season because they believe there is no risk for further damage to the meniscus. And they do not believe that any part of Wynn's 2026 season will be in jeopardy. The medical team will continue to monitor Mason Wynne's status, but it is unlikely he will land on the injure list. Now, my thoughts on this is that if this team was in, a playoff hunt, right? Which, after losing two in a row to Seattle still has them and four and a half back
Starting point is 00:03:38 of the wild card, which if you're an optimist, you know, that doesn't seem impossible because it's not. But if you're a pessimist or at least in my eyes being realistic about what's going on, this team is probably done. All right. Is there any part of them that makes you think they're going to go on or run over the next couple of weeks and sneak into the playoffs? Probably not.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Probably not. I'm not saying it's impossible, but probably. not. And really I want to start worrying about the long term rather than just what's going to happen at the end of this season. And even if it's true that he can't injure the knee anymore than it already is, why are we, why are we risking it? Why risk it? You know, there are two guys currently on the IL named Bernardin and Nolan Arnato who are working their way back. But they had small injuries, if you remember, that ended up, they played through them, and they went on to affect them in other parts of their bodies. And that's why they have not been available
Starting point is 00:04:37 for the last month. So why risk doing damage to not just the knee, can't hurt the knee anymore, but risking damage to other parts of his body just to finish out the season? You know, you start to do things a little differently because that part of your body hurts. And it's starts putting pressure on different areas, and that's where other injuries occur. Now, Katie's quote from Mason about this, you know, he said some stuff is probably going to have to be done this offseason, but I want to finish the year as strong as possible. I hate not playing games, but going forward, if I'm going to play the rest of the year out, maybe taking the day off here and there isn't a bad idea.
Starting point is 00:05:21 You don't say. He said, I was told I probably can't do too much worse to it. Probably. So that's why I want to be out there. Knock on wood, if I can't hurt myself any further because of this, then I want to be out there. I feel I owe it to these guys to finish three years strong. I definitely don't want to cash it in this early.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Technically, we still have a shot for a playoff first, so I want to go out there and compete for that. I want to do it for my pitchers. I know these guys really want me out there at shortstop, and I want to be there. I'm going to have time in the offseason to recover so I can feel like I can play this one out. Now, don't give me wrong.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Mason is saying all the right things. He's saying all the right things that a leader should be saying. I appreciate it. I appreciate the leadership. I appreciate the willingness to fight through the pain to be there for his team. But, man, I can't help but think that this seems like an awfully big risk at this point. Don't you think, again, if you're in playoff contention, fight.
Starting point is 00:06:22 then you're not really and it just as far as the procedure he needs done it's not like we're rebuilding a knee here okay it's not a major surgery although many people argue that any surgery is major you are cutting into your body but this is the guy that you think will be playing the most demanding spot on your team for many years to come and And I'm not sure that I'm putting him at risk if I don't have to. Why can't we start the healing process now? So maybe I'm being too cautious. Maybe that's just me.
Starting point is 00:07:02 I know he's in contention for the gold glove. So I'm not sure if you shut him down now, what that would do to his status for the award, if he would have enough innings and whatnot. I don't know. And Katie also pointed out that he's on pace to post the highest full season fielding percentage by a cardal shortstop of franchise history, which I was like, whoa, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Even better than Ozzy, who I got up on my wall over here, but you can't see it. I love that he wants to be out there. I really do, but I don't want to look back on the last couple of weeks of this season and say, I told you so. I told you so. It just seems like an unnecessary risk. That's all. But maybe I'm being too cautious.
Starting point is 00:07:41 You tell me. Now, if the cardals were closer, like I said, I might change my tomb. But they've yet to take advantage of the Mets slide. They keep losing. and they lost another one last night. The Cardinals did. The Cardsals did too. And, you know, like Thanos from Avengers Endgame,
Starting point is 00:07:59 it was inevitable. Randy Orozarena was inevitable. We warned you and it happened. We'll discuss it next coming up on Locked on Cardinals. The NFL season is here and Fandil is making sure you're ready for kickoff with a can't miss offer. Right now new customers can bet you's $5. And if you're bet,

It is always welcome and encouraged. We're going to get some of that feedback in segment three. But let's talk about last night's game.
Starting point is 00:11:18 For the second night in a row, the Cardinals jumped out to a two to nothing lead on the Mariners, only to see that lead evaporate and eventually lose the game by a couple of runs. Lost 4 to 2 on Monday, Tuesday. Final score is 5 to 3. And coming into this series, I pointed out multiple people that the Cardinals pitching staff is going to have to worry about because this Mariners lineup, it's excellent and it's deep. You know, everybody in the lineup can hit. They can. Sure, it starts to, you know, fade a little bit as you get to the bottom like most lineups do.
Starting point is 00:11:50 But one through six, pretty darn good. You know, you've got ALNBP candidate Cal Rale. You've got Julio Rodriguez, Josh Naylor, A. E. E. Suarez and, you know, the other guys, J.P. Crawford and company. But the guy that you just knew, was going to make his mark at some point in this series was former Cardinal Randy a Roserney. You know, he's a guy that always seems to rise to the occasion. The bigger the stage, the better for this guy. Had a couple of hits in Monday's win, but on Tuesday, go to superstar mode against the guy that the cardals traded him for in starting pitcher Matthew
Starting point is 00:12:33 Libertor. And Libby was looking strong early. First couple of innings, very nice. First inning was it six pitches in the first inning. Beautiful. But just like Michaelis, the previous night, he made a crucial mistake with the bottom of the order, which set a rose arena up for his bat in the third inning, which just changed the whole demeanor of the game.
Starting point is 00:12:54 And that mistake was walking. the number nine hitter. Victor Robles led off the ending with a single, still second. So that left first base open, but this is the bottom of the order. And like Michaelis on Monday, you want to be aggressive against the lower hitters in the order because when you flip that lineup over, you got some mashers waiting for you at the top of the lineup. Gone are the days where it was like a little tiny leadoff hitter who had speed and that's all they did. No, now your leadoff hitter. are hitting tanks.
Starting point is 00:13:27 That's what they want. And that's what the Mariners got. Top of their lineup, there he is. Randy arose a rain up. And as soon as the walk happened, as soon as it happened, I think all of us in Cardinal Nation just let out a big.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Uh-oh. Now, Libby, for whatever reason, lost his command in that inning, was having some issues specifically with the fastball. It was up in the zone continuously, just boof, boof, boof, up in the zone, having a tough time getting it down. And you just kind of felt that something bad was going to happen because of that situation.
Starting point is 00:14:07 And oh, boy, did something bad happen in a big way. After missing with the first two, Libby leaves a heater up and a Rosarena smashes it, 405 feet out to left field, absolute bomb, gives the Mariners a three to two lead. last time the Cardinals would have the lead in this game and it gave Seattle, like the players as well as the crowd, it just gave them their swagger back. Like all of a sudden there they were dancing and having a good time again. And I don't know, I honestly, I don't know if I've ever seen a hitter, pimp out a home run quite like Rania Rosarana does.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Yeah, it irks me a little bit because there's so much going on. he's got, you know, when he hits it, he's got the pose towards the dugout. Then he's got the bat flip. And then he's got some weird hand shake going on with the first base coach before he ever even touch his first base. But then he round second gets over to third. And then a third base, he does some kind of like basketball jump shot or something with a third base coach. And then he's got to do a pose when he crosses home plate. Certainly a showman.
Starting point is 00:15:19 He put on a show over the band. that's for sure. And, you know, when you have success like Rania Rosarena does, I suppose you're allowed to do such things. I can only think back, and I never got to see Bob Gibson pitch, but I can only imagine what Bob Gibson would feel about what a home run trot for Rania a rose arena is like like how quickly does his blood boil seeing this guy do all of the crap that he does as he goes around the bases but hey big swing big head against the guy he was traded for something you could just feel coming and he let the cardinals know he let the cardinals know for sure that here in that home run next any josh nailer smokes one off liby as well makes
Starting point is 00:16:06 it four to two a rosarina would add on a sack fly to give him four RBIs on the night. Final score this one, five three. He's now hitting three 26 against the Cardinals in his career with 12 RBIs against them in 11 games. You know, and it feels like, you know, it feels like every former Cardinal punishes them. And a Rosarena certainly did that in Tuesday's game. And like I said, he had a couple of hits in the first game as well. So, yeah, yeah, he's getting his revenge, certainly. Libby was asked how we felt after the game. And, you know, he was very open and honest, said that he felt good. He did no issues with the arm or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:16:45 It felt like his stuff was really, really good, which is why losing a game like this is very frustrating when you feel good about what you're doing and the ball's coming out nicely and you're getting the good shape and everything seems to be working. And then you make two mistakes. He's like, I made two mistakes and it cost me both times. He also pointed out that obviously the three walks, and that's something that he wants to do. Those weren't ideal.
Starting point is 00:17:09 but at no point did he feel like fatigued or tired or anything. I know we keep worrying about that when something bad happens to Libby and he doesn't pitch well that, uh-oh, is he okay? Is his arm okay? He says he felt fine. He just made a couple mistakes and they took advantage of it. And that's what they do with the major league level, especially a team like Seattle who's so much better than the Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Like, be honest, okay, this is not me bashing the Cardinals. I get some heat for this all the time. And I'm like, that team's just better. And they're way better. They are. they're starting pitching their bullpen i mean matt brash is disgusting i said it in yesterday's show i'm gonna keep repeating it like i don't know how anybody hits him i think fermin got a hit off him in this game but like he's got that it i mean it's like a frisbee and it just shooleum on his slider
Starting point is 00:17:56 and then he's throwing smoke up there with the heat that's got movement and then he drops that change up i don't know how people hit it absurd how do we get that guy i get me like four of those dudes but disappointing loss, obviously for sure, because again, you're grabbing the lead. Normally I complain now the Cardinals are always playing from behind, but that's back-to-back nights that the offense actually gave you a two-to-nothing leave. They jump on the Seattle starter,
Starting point is 00:18:22 and then the pitching staff gives it right back and then some. So that sucks. That hurts. And I can only chalk it up is saying, it's a superior team. Seattle Mariners are one of those teams that, has a very good chance of going deep into this playoffs. I mean, a lot of people, when you look,
Starting point is 00:18:42 if they get their starting pitching on point and really going well, you know, Brian Wu looked really good on Monday. But, you know, this was not a great start from George Kirby by any means. Logan Gilbert's going to be on the mountain. They just keep throwing them up there. Luis Castillo is the next one. I mean, they got a lot of options in their rotation. And then obviously the lineup's really, really good.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And then you got that bullpen, which has looked outstanding the last two nights. So I can see why. I can see why people are picking them to go a long way. We're going to wrap it up with some comments from yesterday's show about hitting coach Brown. We'll do that next here on Locked on Cardinals. There's nothing like catching a baseball game live.
Starting point is 00:19:27 You got the energy. You got the crowd. You saw it last night in Seattle, man. As soon as that home run happened, they were going bonkers. And, you know, you also give a chance to see your favorite team and favorite players in person. but getting tickets can be the problem, right? That can be where things get a little tough. You deal with cues and logging screens and those stupid surprise fees,
Starting point is 00:19:47 takes fun out of buying your tickets for not just sporting events, but concerts and, you know, anything else that you need tickets to, which is why I use game time and you should too, because this is the app that gives the advantage back to fans. Starting point is 00:21:04 night on Lockdown MLB on YouTube or wherever you listen to your podcast. Myself and John Frisch will be hosting again tonight if you want to stop by. We had a nice group of people in there last night when we went live after all the West Coast games were done. There are six West Coast games. At least they're having the first two nights. So we have to wait till all of them are done. So waiting after the Cardinals game, yeah, it's fine. But then we got to wait for the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks and the Giants.
Starting point is 00:21:31 And it's, you know, it gets a little late. But you can catch, you know, the video and the audio feed the next day when you guys get up. So give it a world. Cardinal Confessions time. Yesterday's topic was hitting coach Bram Brown and whether or not he should be held responsible for the lack of offense from the Cardinals over the second half of the season. I got a lot of people who were like, fire this dude, he sucks, you know, he hasn't been able to fix anybody, can't turn anybody around.
Starting point is 00:21:59 And, you know, it just feels like a revolving door of hitting coaches where it starts to make me think, maybe it's not really the hitting coaches, okay? And that was my stand. I put more of the blame on just the quality of players that this team has imposed. Lloyd. And here's what some people had to say about the situation. Lack of offense, very likely can be attributed to Brown and management-sitting philosophy. Many players actually do better away from the Cardinal way of approaching at bats. Cardinals do not prioritize base runners.
Starting point is 00:22:29 They do not think about shortening swings to make contact. This is not rocket science. Teams that make pictures throw strikes, score runs. Now, one thing, and again, thank you for writing in, one thing I'll say to that is that the philosophy that I've heard preached repeatedly this season is there's a time to slug and a time to hit. I'm sure you've heard that as well. If that is true and this is what they're going by, then yeah, they know when they should be focused on making more contact as opposed to swing for power. But I will agree with you.
Starting point is 00:23:07 There are plenty of bats where I'm like, what the hell are they doing? where guys are swinging at the first pitch in situations where, you know, another opposing pitcher has lost their control and is having a tough time throwing strikes. And then for whatever reason, they think they're just going to lay in a cookie, I guess, but they swing at something that is not a cookie. And they end up making an outer, putting themselves behind in the count. That drives me nuts. You know, I prefer them to take in situations more.
Starting point is 00:23:37 I'm a more conservative hitter. That's how I was in my playing day. So in that way, we agree completely that they do take some really stupid bets. But I agree with you. Wear them down. Make them throw strikes, attack the mistakes over the plate. That's what you got to do in this league. Firing Brown would be stupid.
Starting point is 00:23:56 He's been every one year. Sure, we're struggling lately. But remember how well we were hitting in the first half? Sure, it's possible. It was a fluke. But I don't believe that. I believe we had been placing our trust for far too long on the wrong hitters. and or in the wrong hitters.
Starting point is 00:24:12 Apologies. And that's my thought. I'm with you. Maybe some of these guys just aren't as good as we wanted them to be. Just because you take a guy in the first or second round doesn't mean that they're going to be good. There's no promises. There's no guarantees when it comes to that. Plenty of guys they take early in drafts and they're busts and never make it to the major league.
Starting point is 00:24:32 So is that what's going on here? Maybe these guys that they choose are just not as good as we want them to be. Now, is it because they're just not that good or is this a development issue before they get to the big leagues? Is it an organizational issue with what they're teaching in the miners? When was the last time the Cardinals developed a really good hitter? Like out of their own farm system? It was the last time that happened. It's been a while.
Starting point is 00:25:01 We've heard promises of guys, you know, Dylan Carlson was the last one that claimed out that was supposed to be, you know, the next coming. of a legit star in Major League Baseball, and that didn't happen. And now we're watching Jordan Walker have issues. We're watching Nolan Gorman continue to have issues. And I don't know. One thing that always got pointed out was that the Cardinals had like their lack of the amount of people on their coaching staffs in the minors. Not enough coaching, not enough advisors and stuff like that to help the players and give them the attention. that they required and, you know, it's something they've started to remedy.
Starting point is 00:25:43 You know, they just recently, you know, this past year started making improvements and hiring more staff and stuff to make this better. So we'll see if this new crop of talent that's coming up will benefit from it. But they're at least trying to do that now, where in the past they did not. There's another one. Brown didn't hire himself since 2007, nor did he or he either hire or file. Okay. Nor since 2007 did he either hire or fire Hal McCray, Mark McGuire, John Mayberry, Jeff Albert, and Turner Ward. But we know who did. Treat the disease, not a single symptom out of dozens. Well put.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Firing the hitting coach is not the answer. He has done an amazing job with some of the players. He can only coach. Players have to follow his directions. The man just got here. And no team, good or bad, keeps firing everyone when the team is not winning. Some of the top teams lose to bottom feeders and they don't start snatching people's jobs. Cardals fans need to realize what this year is and what it's not. This is an entirely young team that's been playing lately, including the bullpen. Let the boys play and grow before you start dismantling the team and coaches. They may be pushing for 500, but they are much better than some other teams with veteran players. Go cards.
Starting point is 00:27:03 All right, you know, well, and on that one. That's a little motivational ending to that. one. I agree too. And I know it's an instant satisfaction world. You've heard me say that many, many times where you don't get the results right away. Get them out of here. It's over. Fire him. And that's just not how baseball is done. Some teams do that. Seattle fired Bram Brown last year. And he wasn't around very long, but he just didn't click well with the personalities that they had. It just wasn't a good fit. We never heard of the. problems going on with Bram Brown and having issues with any of the personalities here with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:27:45 If there are some going on, the only one that we've really heard is, you know, what lately about Jordan Walker, maybe not doing things the way that they want him to do it to make himself better. That's all we've heard. We haven't really, I at least I haven't. I heard Jordan Walker side of this and all that, you know, that was true. But again, I can't just look at Brant Brown go, you're the reason why. Because I've seen this group of players not do well for a couple of years now.
Starting point is 00:28:16 So I don't think it's him. I think it's just the players that they're just not that good. They're just not where you want them to be. You need new people. You need more talent, whether that's coming from your own farm system, which they're working on, or you go out and find some better bats. and better pitching. But you got to do one or the other.
Starting point is 00:28:39 You can't just keep floating here in the middle because that's not going to get you anywhere. Bad spot to be. All right, Michael McGreevy's on the hill tonight. They'll try to avoid the sweep against Logan Gilbert. I'll be up late for the game. And they'll be game night tonight. And we've got, you know, I'll be on the socials,
