Starting point is 00:00:00 Everson Pereira, welcome to St. Louis, but he wasn't the only hero on Tuesday night. In fact, it was a moment in the top of the eighth inning that actually saved the day. The St. Louis Cardinals announced, first and foremost, this is the big news.

Starting point is 00:00:44 They're going with the blue hats the rest of the way during away games. So I thought I would rock the blue cap here today. I'm guessing that won't be what happens when they wear the victory blues on Saturdays, which they do during away games because that goes with the red cap. but blue with the gray uniforms is now permanent, now permanent for the rest of this year. So that's cool, big win for Cardinal Nation because that was something that they had been fighting for.

Starting point is 00:01:16 They also got another productive start from one of their top left-handed prospects down in Memphis. The Springfield roster is loaded with talent, but they've lost four in a row now. Like what's going on there? Meanwhile, the Big League Club is coming out back-to-back series wins. They got the Phillies in town for three. Tough loss on Monday night, seven walks,

Starting point is 00:01:37 a couple of errors really made a big difference in that one. Offense fought back, but it just couldn't get all the way there. And then you had to face one of the toughest left-handers in baseball on Tuesday night, Christopher Sanchez. And you got to face them in the not-so-hitter-friendly confines of Bush Stadium, not exactly the best recipe for success. But as Chris Berman always said, when he would talk about, you know, when he was doing NFL prime time, that's why they play the games.

Starting point is 00:02:12 As good as Christopher Sanchez was in this game on Tuesday, and he was awesome. Six shutout innings, only gave it four hits, struck out seven. It was Dre Day, baby. Drey Day at Bush Stadium with Andre Palante on the mound, and he had ground balls on his mind, lots of them, And the best version of Palante is the one that, yeah, he's going to give up some hits from time to time. Let's just accept that. But he's getting a lot of ground balls, grounder after grounder after grounder.

Starting point is 00:02:41 And he's getting double plays. When people are getting on base, they're gone. They get wiped out because of the double plays. And that's what we saw on Tuesday night. Palante matches Sanchez's six shutout innings, allows just four hits, just like Sanchez. He does walk three, which is not. ideal. Only two punches, but he got out of a pair of the two-one and one-out jams in the first and second innings, which kind of had me wondering like, all right, how long is, is Andre going to stay in

Starting point is 00:03:14 this game? Because it wasn't off to a great start, but he was getting ground balls. And despite allowing, what was it, at least one base runner in each of his six in this game, he actually faced just one hitter over the minimum over the final three innings thanks to the double play ball, which is Andre Palante's best front. Phillies grounded into four double plays on the night, three with Palante on the mound. But the fourth came on what ended up being the biggest inning and the biggest moment of the game, as good as Andre Palante was and he was good. Once again, giving the Cardinals a chance to win.

Starting point is 00:03:55 It was the eighth inning that really, kind of put the momentum back in the Cardinals side. Now, at this point, when you get to the top of the 8th inning, the Cardinals are already up one to nothing. Mason Win, two out RBI single in the seventh inning. I love, absolutely love watching Mason Win, going the opposite way. Love it. Love it. There's a few guys on the team where when they go opposite field, like it just looks right. J.J. Weatherhol is one of those people. Mason Winn is obviously another one when Jordan Walker can do it. I enjoy that. It's fantastic.

Starting point is 00:04:31 I love seeing it. And Mason Wynn has been really, really good at that recently, where he's taking what the pitchers are giving them. And he takes that ish to right field. And it works. And he's getting on base a lot more. So he gets that two out RBI single after Jordan Walker had walked to lead off the inning.

Starting point is 00:04:50 And it was the lead off? I think it was leading off the inning. And then he steals second base, gets himself at scoring position, ends up coming around. So that was great. So seventh inning, we got a 1-0 lead. Ali calls on the lefty Caleb Ferguson, who I told you it was going to be him and

Starting point is 00:05:05 Justin Broll, we're going to have big roles in the series because of all the left-handed hitters that the Phillies have. So he calls on Caleb Ferguson, who excellent his first two appearances as a Cardinal, rough outing on Monday where he didn't record it now, gave up one run on one hit, he walked three batters, not ideal. But it happens, right? You know, it's a volatile thing when you're a relief pitcher. And again, you knew he's going to be a big part of this series with these lefties.

Starting point is 00:05:34 And he comes into the game. And once again, my guy's got no command of the zone whatsoever. Like, you can't get anything across. And the Phillies are one of those teams that just doesn't chase a whole lot. And he ends up walking three batters out the gate, walks the basis loaded. Cardinals get the lead. They get the momentum. And this is what you say.

Starting point is 00:05:55 and Ollie was not pleased when he came out to the mound, was not like, all right, buddy, we'll get him next time. He was like, this sucks. This is terrible. Get the hell out of here. Let's see if we can get somebody else in here to get us out of this mess. He's got no choice but to go to the bullpen. And as you know, there's really not a whole lot of swing and miss out there.

Starting point is 00:06:16 It's been a tough go for them this year. So despite the lefty Luis Arise coming up, Ali decides, I'm going to go with the Ritey Ryan Stannock. Now, our rise is batting 321 against right handers this year. One of the best contact hitters in baseball. Won a few batting titles. Guy knows what he's doing. On paper, there's no way this should have worked.

Starting point is 00:06:42 It shouldn't have. But again, Chris Berman style, that's why they play the games. Falls behind 1-0 and jams them with a fastball. ball on the inside part of the plate, and he grounds it right to Alec Burleson over at first base to spins and fires playing in for this exact situation, hoping it would happen. Fires home to Pedro Pahas. He tags home play, fires right back to Burley. With 3-2-3 double play, twin killing, amazing stuff.

Starting point is 00:07:18 And now you're one out away from pulling off what is called a Houdini in the game of baseball where you come in with the bases loaded and nobody out. So if you kept hearing people saying that, that's why. It wasn't they were trying to be clever. That's legitimately what they call it. And he gets ahead of JT. Romu to 01 and gets a fastball up in the zone. And as much as I piss and moan about the dimensions of Bush Stadium because how it's constantly hurting the Cardinals offense where they should have way more runs and home runs

Starting point is 00:07:46 and because of what has happened at Bush Stadium and how the ball just does not travel quite the way it used to. This was a situation where it absolutely saved the Cardinals' bacon because Real Mutu's fly travels 396 feet to center field where Nathan Church brings it in and it ends the inning. Like my, I just, I was like, oh, my gosh, that is not going to carry out, is it? And for a second, I was like, that would be so Cardinals like and so Ryan Stanck like to give up a home run in this situation.

Starting point is 00:08:20 But instead, he's the here. gets him out of it, an incredible job by a guy who, again, who has had a lot of ups and downs this year. He's had some pretty good moments, a lot more good moments of bad moments recently, but a decent number of ugly moments this year where I still feel like we're not exactly trusting Ryan Stannock all the time. But, you know, he got it done here.

Starting point is 00:08:43 So props to him, he comes off the mound, all fired up, which is one of my favorite things about Stannick. You know, I like the fact that he throws triple digits. And I also like that my guy gets pumped up, man. He loves what he's doing out there. And when something good happens, he's not going to be shy about letting you know that it did. And so I dig that, man.

Starting point is 00:09:02 I love guys who have a like fire and passion. You know, you don't see a lot of it in baseball as much as you used to. Well, I shouldn't say that. You don't see as much of it in baseball as you do and say other sports. Let's put it that way. And I loved it. And he should be pumped. up. And I made the joke that someone needs to buy

Starting point is 00:09:22 Stanick a beer after this one. And then I corrected myself on Axon was like, you know what? Caleb Ferguson should pay his whole damn tab for getting him out of that one. That's the least he can do for him. Huge moment. It shifted the momentum back to the Cardinals.

Starting point is 00:09:38 And that's when the newcomer Everson Pereira finished off his biggest game as a Cardo. And we're going to talk about him and that moment. Starting point is 00:12:51 Thanks for making it locked on. Carlos, your first listen of the day. Thank you for making it locked on the number one sports podcast network. So Everson Pereira. Now, this is something, okay, so I made two shorts last night. first one I called him Everson Perea, which was how Chip and

Starting point is 00:13:07 Brad Thompson were saying it last night. But then if you go back and you go into videos of times with him with the Yankees or with the rays and the White Sox, they say Pereira. I don't know which one is actually right. So I recorded both and I see more people saying

Starting point is 00:13:23 Pereira than I saw anybody saying Perea, which is how our guys were pronouncing it. So I'm going to go with Pereira until we get confirmation that that it's supposed to be the other way around. So don't give me any hell for mispronouncing his name, if that's what you think's going on here. I want to get it right.

Starting point is 00:13:40 I just, I don't know which one is the right way. And more people say Pereira than they say Perea. I actually don't hear anybody else saying it, except for the guys from last night. So anyway, when he got acquired by the Cardinals, it wasn't something that made headlines around baseball. You know, Cardinals fans mostly kind of shrug their shoulders.

Starting point is 00:13:58 And, you know, it said things like, you know, well, he can't be, you know, worse than blank, whoever was on the Cardinals. Most people pointing at Cesar Prieto. And honestly, if Nelson Velazquez was hitting lefties better, then this move probably never happens in the first place, but he wasn't. And Pereira does give you more options, more flexibility in the outfield than Nelson could have. You know, he can play all three possessions or positions. Nellie could not. He could only play in the corners, basically left field.

Starting point is 00:14:33 More importantly, Pereira is also a right-handed bat that can compliment Nathan Church in centerfield, right? Nathan Church is your lefty. Pereira can be your righty. And then you saw what they did late in the game where church goes to center field and Pereira scooted over. And that's kind of like their best defensive outfield option right there. He's got more speed. He's got more athleticism than Velazquez has. The only question was, can the dude hit?

Starting point is 00:15:01 He's going to be able to hit at the big league level. Like, we don't need another, I loved him when he was here, but we don't need another Michael Ciani situation or a Victor Scott situation or what we dealt with Nathan Church for a while where all defense, not a whole lot of hitting. We need something. And in his career, Everson Pereira has not been a good hitter at the big league level.

Starting point is 00:15:26 He was batting around like 170. in his career. Hits very well at AAA, but you've seen that before with guys that the Cardinals have brought up. They were like, yeah, they're really good AAA hitters. Not so good in the major leagues.

Starting point is 00:15:40 They're like what we call the 4A type of players, right? So if he wants to stick around, he's got to be better than what he showed in New York, Tampa Bay, or Chicago. And Tuesday, he had two of the highlight real plays in the game. When first one was when he took extra bases away from Alec Boehm in the fifth inning.

Starting point is 00:16:01 It makes this outstanding catch. Like, it was phenomenal. Got an excellent read on it. It was fading toward right center field. And he made an excellent read. Got a great jump on it, leaps into the wall, makes the catch. Again, another player that shows some fire

Starting point is 00:16:22 when he does something well. And that's what he did there. You know, it was at first, I didn't think he caught it. I thought it got over his glove and into the, into the bleachers. But he caught it. It was great. Phenomenal. And when he makes defensive gems, he's already made a couple of them for us, like the diving catch that we saw in the game against the Rockies on Sunday.

Starting point is 00:16:45 You see that emotion out of him. And I love that. I dig that. Here he gives you more of that youthful enthusiasm and just kind of like the joy of the game with his demonstrative movements. on Tuesday. So great stuff. Keep it up. And then at the plate, you know, he struck out the first couple times, but, you know, Christopher Sanchez has the tendency to do that to people, make them look pretty stupid at the plate. So I'm not going to, I'm not sweating that whatsoever. Eighth inning, though, after Stan, it gets him out of that rather large pickle. It's Pereira,

Starting point is 00:17:19 who leads off the inning against the left-hander Tim Meza and he hits a nuke to center field on to under freeze landing. As soon as he hit it, I was like, oh, boy. I don't expect that pop out of him. That 430 feet? Like, what? Where did that come from? But he's got some pop. If you go back and look at some of the footage of him

Starting point is 00:17:40 in games with the Yankees and some of the White Sox as well, some of these home runs he hits are bombs, dude. And this was one of them, 430 feet absolute laser. The center field makes it 2 to nothing, gives Riley O'Brien a little bit of breathing room in case he needs it because normally he does. And for once, he actually did not in this one. Props to Riley O'Brien.

Starting point is 00:18:02 He looked good tonight. Comes on in the ninth inning and gets the fills one, two, three, picks up his 30th save of the season, which moves him into a tie for first place in the National League with Mason Miller. They're both now also tied for second place overall in the big leagues. It's Miller. It's Kate Smith of the Guardians. And then you got Brian Baker in Tampa Bay who leads everyone with 34 saves.

Starting point is 00:18:25 Those 30 saves also puts Riley in. some really good company with Cardinals closers from over the years who had 30 or more saves in a season. I love the history and seeing some of these names. You know, Hall of Famer, Dennis Actressly, 30 and 36 in 1996 and 97. Todd Worell, 32, 33 and 36 in the late 80s, Jason Isringhausen, 32, did that twice, 33, 39, and then 47. All of Famer Bruce Souter, 36 and 45, in 1982 and 1984. Tom Hanky. The guy that looks absolutely not like a ball player, except, I mean, he's big dude, but 36 of them in 1995. Easily the most random names on this list.

Starting point is 00:19:07 Edward Mujica, 37 in 2013, Ryan Franklin, 38 in 2009. You got Jason Mott with 42 and 2012, Hall of Famer Lee Smith, had 43 twice and then 47 in the early 90s. Trevor Rosenthal with 45 and 48 in 2014 and 2015. And then you had Ryan Halsley with the all-time lead at 49 in 2024. I mean, that is just an amazing amount of closers, like stars. Yeah, Muhika Franklin. Okay. Jason Mata.

Starting point is 00:19:40 Okay. But, you know, Trevor Rosenhall, Rosenthal, when he was in his prime before some injuries got him, like he was amazing. Halsley, we know, won the Roll-Aids reliever of the year. But then, you know, you see those names of Ack and Todd Worell and Izzy and Bruce Suter and Tom. Yankee, who was so good with the Toronto Blue Jays for most of those years before coming home to St. Louis, Lee Smith, obviously. So it's a pretty good company for Riley O'Brien.

Starting point is 00:20:08 And, you know, I'm just, I'm not one that usually enjoys pitchers duels that much in the regular season, but I had a really good time watching this game on Tuesday night. They had playoffish type of vibes, you know, wasn't the biggest crowd in the world at Bush Stadium, but, you know, it has meaning. These games against the Phillies have a lot of meaning because at the end of the day, it pulled the Cardinals back to three and a half into the, behind them in the wild card. Where the Phillies are now tied with Arizona and the Padres, all three of them are at 64 and 57. You know, I counted out the Padres a long time ago. I thought they were cooked and they've won four in a row. Marlins have won three straight. They're a game ahead of the Cardinals now.

Starting point is 00:20:49 And division wise, all of a sudden, the Cincinnati Reds who have played a whole lot better, have came back. they beat the White Sox on a Popat giveaway night and have moved past the pirates who are now in last place in the NL Central and have lost seven of their last 10. And I know the wild card hopes are our stretch, but the Cardinals, they're still hanging around. They're still hanging around. And we should enjoy that while it's going on. And we got quite a bit of season left still to play. So I'm not giving up hope, but at the same time, you got to be realistic about. how close they are and whether or not they can make up enough ground against a lot of these good teams

Starting point is 00:21:30 because the schedule for the Cardinals coming up is not exactly easy. So we'll talk about that in a little bit. We're also going to jump down to the minor leagues. Cooper Jerpy, very impressive yet again at AAA. So we'll talk about that coming up on Lockstone Cardinals. It's time for the everyday icon presented by Stance as the official sock partner. Memphis Redbirds begin a six game road trip against the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night. Got a six to nothing victory starter Cooper Jerpy,

Starting point is 00:23:27 number 16 among the Cardinals' top 30 prospects, according to MLB pipeline, continued his dominant since being promoted to Memphis. He's been coming back from the arm injury. Man, he looks good. Man, he looks good. Just his second outing with the Redbirds, four scoreless innings.

Starting point is 00:23:43 He allows one hit, walk two, struck out five, stretching his scoreless streak to eight innings on one hit to begin his AAA career. And you see the delivery, and you see the movement that he's got, A lot of people use the word frisbee on some of the breaking balls that he throws. I mean, you can see why he is looked upon as somebody who could be a very dominant piece for this team at some point, whether it's a starter or reliever.

Starting point is 00:24:13 And you watch it and you're like, wow, wow. Health has been the biggest speed bump for Cooper Jerpy. Hopefully he's put those problems in the rearview mirror and fulfills all that potential. They made him a first round pick of the team not that long ago. No home runs for Gorman in this one. He did go one for four with a walk and a strikeout. Joshua Baez, two for five, two stolen bases, got 20 on the year to go along with the,

Starting point is 00:24:37 I think he's at 30. Is he at 33 or 34 home runs? But he's got a 2020 season under his belt will probably be another 30, 30 season. Leo Berdall, one for three in this game with a double. Springfield is, it's perplexing right now. One of the most talented teams on paper at the double A level, but they've not lost four in a row after falling 15 to 8 on Tuesday. Starter Blake Ida, who had an ERA of 3.30 coming into the game.

Starting point is 00:25:06 We've had him on the show before. Cool dude. Got absolutely shelled in this game, though. 11 runs on 11 hits, four of them, home runs in just four innings, by far his worst outing of his season. Hesu Spias, though, the Cardinals number 21 ranked prospect, according to MLB pipeline, which seems way low at this point, ripped his 16th finger of the season and or not season,

Starting point is 00:25:29 but since getting promoted to AA, now has 30 total bombs on the season to go along with 80 RBIs in 89 games. He's absolutely shredding the minor leagues right now. Radio Rodriguez, one for three with an RBI, gives him 40 a AA, 61 total in 91 games. Tai Pete drives in a couple of runs in this one as well. So there's not winning, though. So they'll gel.

Starting point is 00:25:56 They'll get it together. But man, those two teams are talented. A lot of young talent on Memphis and on, on AA Springfield. So I enjoy it. Kind of like I peek in on them from time to time and watch some of their games, man.

Starting point is 00:26:10 I didn't never used to do that. But what the Cardinals are doing with their farm system, it's got me excited for the future. I'm still excited for the present, though, with the Cardinals, rubber match for them. It's another tough task on Wednesday. Day game afternoon game. Zach Wheeler will be on the mound for the Phillies.

Starting point is 00:26:26 He's rough. It ain't come be easy to get any hits off him. And on the other side, we got Kyle Leahy, who has been excellent for like three months now. So pretty good, strong pitching matchup for Wednesday. Don't expect a ton of runs, but hopefully the boys can squeak out another W before they get the off day on Thursday because the schedule really pinches them again. They're going to start an 11-game road trip, but they only are on the road for 10 days. because they got a double header in this thing again.

Starting point is 00:26:56 So three of them in Chicago against the Cubs who are playing great. And then they got to do five and four days at Cincinnati against the Reds who are playing much better now. They got the double header, which is on Monday the 17th. And then you got three more against the Phillies in Philadelphia. Thanks a lot. Thanks a lot, schedule makers, absolutely exhausting. So we'll see if the guys have enough gas.
