If the St. Louis Cardinals want to get back to winning baseball games, there are three players that stand out to me that need to step their games back up in a major way.
This is Locked on Cardinals.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in their worst rut of the season.
It's been tough to watch.
Let's just be honest.
You know, why not state the obvious?
It has not been pretty recently for our St. Louis Cardinals.
Not so good.
And a lot of people are piling on them.
And rightfully so, it's your right as a fan to be upset with what you're seeing on the field.
I don't like it.
I'm not pleased with what we're seeing on the field right now.
And because of the struggles in June, it's really started to put.
push the Cardinals back to a point where are they going to make the playoffs?
Is this something that is feasible?
You know, a couple of weeks ago, you were thinking, yeah, at least they're going to have a good shot at probably the wild card.
Hell, they were just a game back of the Cubs in the NFL Central for a while there.
But they got to get going.
They got to get going here quickly.
And there are plenty of teams because it's not just the Cardinals that are struggling right now or have struggled so far this year.
There have been a lot of teams that have fallen into the.
similar ruts. The Phillies lost 9 of 10 recently. They've turned it around. The Tampa Bay
Rays weren't doing much of anything back in May. They've won, what, 21 of their last 30 to turn
things around for them. The Baltimore Orioles came out of the gate extremely slow, but it found
a nice groove. They're 13 and 7 in their last 20. Closer to home, the Cincinnati Rets,
who seemed like they were a forgotten team. All of a sudden, seven wins in their last 10 and now
tied with the Cardinals and the division. The point is, these things are
happen, you know, throughout the course of a season, there's going to be ups and downs.
You just hope you have more ups than downs when it's all set and done.
And if the Cardinals are going to turn things back around again, they've got a really good chance
to do that starting tonight against the Chicago White Sox, who they begin a three-game series
with.
But even though you're playing the White Sox, right?
You know, this is a team that is not good on paper.
You still need your guys to step up, especially the way things have been going for the Cardinals.
because if you continue to play the way you are, you're not going to beat many teams,
even the Whitehawks.
And it's time to turn these frowns upside down, in my opinion.
And there are three names that I think absolutely have to be better right now if that's going to happen.
Number one on the list, it shouldn't surprise anybody, is Lars Newport.
And this is for obvious reasons.
He's in his worst slump that he's ever had.
You know, most of the time, if he is struggling, Newt's probably coming back from an injury
and trying to get his timing back.
That's what you're normally worried about.
But Lars has stayed healthy as far as we know so far this season.
And for the first two months of the year,
it was paying off huge for the Cardinals.
At the end of May, the Cardinals were 33 and 25.
During that time, Lars Neupar was the catalyst at the top of the order
that got this machine going.
In March and April, he was hitting 263,
which I know is not anything special in the grand scheme of things.
But the OBP is Lars Newt Bar's game, right?
It's not batting.
average. It's just him getting on base in general. And he was at a 400 clip on base percentage in
March and April, 25 walks compared to 21 strikeouts. The OPS was at 839. The OPS plus was at 139.
That wasn't something that was going to be sustainable. I understand that. Everybody understands that.
It came on pretty hot at the year at the beginning. Things dipped a bit, but through May 16th,
He was hitting 260, seven home runs, 24 RBIs, 31 walks to 32 strikeouts.
The OBP was at 374.
Those are the numbers that you want from Lars Newport.
But since then, in a 25 game span, he is hitting 161.
He has one home run, and I'm not concerned about the power.
I was shocked that he had hit as many home runs as he had already.
But just one home run, four RBIs, but this is where it gets a little frightening.
struck out 36 times compared to just eight walks.
His OBP plummeted to 240.
And over that time span, the cardals are 12 and 13.
Then in June, he's down to a 114 batting average.
The OPP is down to 235.
He has no home runs.
He has no RBIs.
And he's got a 19 to 6 strikeout to walk ratio.
Now, this isn't rocket science.
If you're a baseball person, you know the importance of your lead off hitter,
getting your lead off guy on base is the goal for every team.
That's his job.
And with Lars struggling as badly as he's been and not only not getting on base,
but not even putting the ball in play, like the strikeouts are crazy high for Lars
Newpar right now.
And this is obviously going to hinder what goes on with the rest of the lineup because
guess what?
You're the leadoff hitter.
You're the number one guy in the batting order, which means guess what?
You're going to see the most hit bats.
in most games. And so if four times out of five at bats in the game, you're not doing anything,
not even putting it in play, no production whatsoever. That's going to cause an issue with the entire
offense. And Newt striking out at a 35% rate over that 25 game time span is crazy. Because
his career strikeout percentage is at 20%. So this is historically high for Lars Neut.
Noobar right now. And they're ugly at bats, too. This is not something where Newt's
watching the ball go over the inner half of the plate or something and they're clipping the
corners and painting the black on the plate. That's not happening at all. He is swinging wildly
at things that I never thought I'd see Lars Neupar swinging at before. He's just not seeing the
ball well at all. It's like everything around him is in the dark. And he's just like hoping that he'll
make contact. It's been really, really rough to watch. It's been weird to watch somebody fall from
grace as fast and as quickly as he has compared to what we're normally used to seeing. If there was
one thing you could count on with Lars Newpar was like that, that evil eye strike zone. And he,
it is gone right now. And let's not all, let's not forget as well what Lars Newpar means to this
ball club just personality wise, you know, when he's in a good mood and he's jumping around and
flapping his wings and cheering everybody on, it brings a different vibe, a different juice to what's
going on in that dugout and in that clubhouse. You know, the team feeds off of that large
New Bar energy. You know, there's been a few years since he's been here that he's like the one guy
that is, you know, still active while everybody else is just kind of standing around and watch.
And he was the one guy that was very vocal and it was very, you know, you could see the excitement
in his, in his body language. And, you know, when he's in a place where he is right now, he's
going to be that guy. So getting new back on base more, not striking out. Obviously, that's
going to help this offense tremendously moving forward, both on the field and mentally in the dugout.
You know, you've seen how this scheme will rally around a person who would be struggling for a while.
You saw Wilson Contreras, who was struggling so bad early on in the season. And when he started to
turn the corner and get things going again, you saw all the team rallying around him and how
excited they were for him. And that's what we need for Lars Neupar. We need to be. We need to
the new vibes back as soon as possible.
I still got two other names that I want to bring up.
Guys, I'm looking at they just need to step it up.
One of them's on offense.
The other ones on the pitching side.
We'll get to them next on Lockdown Cardinals.

Thanks again for making a lot.
On Cardinals, your first listen every day,

The feedback is always welcome and encouraged.
A lot of feedback in Monday's show.
So we're going to have a fan feedback segment coming up in tomorrow's show on Wednesday,
depending on when you're listening to this.
So keep them coming in, man.
I want to hear from you, your highs, your lows, you're good, you bad.
lay it on us. We're here for you. So following Newt on the offensive side of things that I want more from is Mason Win. Now Mason Winn is a guy that, you know, we think of him as possibly the newest face of the franchise. At least I do. You know, I think Jordan Walker was supposed to be that guy hasn't worked out yet. Mason Win stepped in last year, kind of became that guy. He's got the charisma. He's got the look. He's got the cannon arm.
play shortstop, which is normally a, you know, a captain-type spot on the club.
Everything about him screams like, this guy should be a stud.
This guy should be an all-star.
On the season, sitting 259 and the OPS plus is just 99.
So league average.
And for me, that's just not good enough.
It just isn't.
And then you look at what he's been doing in the last couple of weeks, and you're like,
oh, boy, Mason went over the last couple weeks, hitting 200, 200.
No home runs. Two RBIs. The OBP is just 228. OPS plus is 32. You get made 32.
And then if you really, and if that doesn't make you sick, if you really want to vomit in your mouth, I mean, who doesn't, right? Sounds delicious, right?
Last six games, he's bad at 125, the OBP, 125, because he's not walking. The OPS plus minus
30.
Minus 30.
That is insane.
That's crazy.
He's never been a guy to take walks, which I hate.
And you know this if you're an everydayer because a walk is as good as a hit, in my opinion.
I'd love to see him be more patient up there.
I know he's a free swinger.
But at some point, you've got to realize that it's not working.
Maybe you should just hold back a little bit, you know?
takes more walks, you know, because when you got your lead off hitter in Lars Neupar
struggling as bad as he is, and then your second hitter in the order is Mason win,
and he's struggling as bad as he is, that's going to affect a lot of things in this lineup.
I mean, it's no shock that they're not putting up runs like they used to or winning games
like they used to because this affects the guys behind them, like Brennan Donovan, who's been hurt.
So there's your top three guys basically doing nothing so far for you.
But then there's Contreras and Herrera and Aronado.
Those guys aren't having, you know, bad streaks right now.
There's just nobody on base in front of them, really.
It's a trickle-down effect.
And even though Nude is getting all the spotlight for his struggles,
Mason Wynn has vanished as well.
Like, he's not doing anything either.
So that's a big problem.
Top two guys in the lineup struggling mightily.
As I said, Donnie, you know, has been dealing with the toe,
so he hasn't actually been playing.
He's still injured.
He's going to play through it,
but how effective is he going to be?
Is he going to be that guy that he was early on in this season
when he was competing for the NL batting title
and, you know, hitting 320, 325 in that vicinity?
I hope so.
I truly hope so.
He's going to give it a go.
He's going to try to play through this thing.
So, you know, top three guys in the lineup have been absent recently.
That makes winning pretty tough.
Another guy we need to get back to doing what he was doing earlier in this season is Matthew
Libertory.
When you look at the Cardinals rotation, there is not one single guy that scares your opponent, right?
Like if you're on the other side of things and you see you're going to face the Cardinals,
is there anybody other than Sunny Gray that you're really that worried about?
Really?
You know, Sunny Gray has been really, really good this year, right?
For the most part, if it's had a couple of bad games.
here and there, it happens. But he's the one guy that, you know, his name stands out on the
scorecard. Like, if you're like, oh, we got sunny gray today. All right. All right. But when it's
Eric Fetty and then Miles Michaelis and Andre Palante, these are guys that are making other teams go,
oh, crap, we're going to face them today. Uh-oh. No. And for a nice stretch there, Matthew
Libertor was kind of that next guy that maybe other teams are a little more concerned about,
because he was really good.
It eight starts between April 13th and May 24th.
Libby was just three and two.
Team was five and three.
But when you look at his numbers, you're like, whoa, they should have been better.
1.91 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 47 innings in those eight starts.
Dominant stuff.
Now, he's not the strikeout nine, ten guys a game type of dude.
but they weren't doing anything against him.
On average, in those eight starts, you were getting just under six innings.
So you're almost getting a quality start every time, just under six innings,
five strikeouts per allowing just 1.3 runs and close to five hits.
That is awesome.
That is some serious pitching.
He was a beast out there.
So not only did you have sunny gray going well,
but you kind of had that one-two punch that you were looking for,
a righty and a lefty coming at you because the Cardinals continuously have right handers in their
rotation. So when you get Stephen Matts and you get Matthew Libertor as lefties that can cause
some problems for other teams, that's good. That's good news, giving the opposition a different look.
Last three starts, though, for Maddie Libertor, like a completely different guy. Facing Texas,
Kansas City and Toronto. It's just been a different story. He's 0 and 3.
The ERA at 10.29.
He's averaging under five innings per outing, giving up over five runs a game, allowing
eight hits per, and the strikeouts are dipped to 3.7.
Obviously, not pitching longer into games will cause a dip in that, but at the same time,
just not striking out as many guys.
He just hasn't been as good.
His fallback to Earth has been a massive blow to this rotation.
Now, the fatigue issue in Kansas City, or not in Kansas City, but he gets.
Kansas City. It was in St. Louis, but against the Royals, obviously that raised a few eyebrows.
You know, Libby hasn't been an every fifth day starter since becoming a major league pitcher.
You know, he bounced back and forth for quite some time. So when you saw that, you were like,
uh-oh, maybe he needs to take a step back, but he said everything was fine. This is just mechanics.
He feels great. Physically, there's nothing to worry about. Now the question is, can he recapture?
what he was doing during that eight-game stretch again.
I personally believe that he can because the stuff,
it's not like his stuff has gotten worse.
It's really more about,
and you hear this word all the time on the telecast,
execution, execution, executing the pitches the right way,
staying away from the middle of the plate.
Because that's where if you are not somebody who strikes out a lot of people,
which none of these guys, you know, Sunny Gray, yes, he is.
I shouldn't take that away from Sunny.
But if you are living in the middle of the plate,
the stuff that these guys have, you're going to get hit.
It just is what it is.
They're not power pitchers, and they're not going to get the swing and misses on fast
balls and stuff.
They have to out pitch their opposition, and you have to execute, and you have to live
on the borders, and you have to move the ball around.
You've got to change speeds.
There's a lot that goes into it.
You just can't rear back and throw it past people.
Getting his mechanics in line again is clearly something that he's probably working on.
You know, I'm sure him and Dusty Blake are in the factory getting it worked out, doing the best they can.
So, you know, that game against Toronto was an exhausting game to watch, watching what the Blue Jays were doing to Libby.
Like he was worn out.
They worked him over with really long at bats and just base hits and then bunting.
And it was just, you know, this constant.
There was always something happening.
That's the kind of stuff I won the Cardinals doing the other teams.
But, like, that's what they were doing to Liberator.
and it worked.
And it's really odd to see, too, because, you know, the Cardinals play the Royals,
and the Royals were, you know, played really good ball in that series and hit the Cardinals
pretty well.
They've gone on to have a horrible losing streak.
What are they at six losses in a row, something like that?
I'll have to double check on that, but I know that they have, they've had a really tough
time recently with winning games.
And then, you know, the Blue Jays come in and they sweep the Cardinals.
and their offense looks unbeatable, like everything about them,
like Alejandro Kirk and all these guys coming in and just doing some serious damage.
And now they've gone cold.
Yeah, so the Royals have lost six in a row and the Blue Jays have lost three in a row.
Like these teams, they beat the Cardals and then they go on.
They're not beating anybody else, which is, then you look back at it because I was making the argument,
those teams were better than, you know,
then people are giving them credit for,
and then they go on to do nothing after they beat the Cardinals.
So very strange, which makes you think,
okay, there's probably,
there must be a problem with the Cardinals right now is what it really must be.
It's not that those teams are that much better,
it's that the Cardinals are playing that much worse.
And that's just the way I'm looking at it right now.
But Libby trying to get that swing and missability back,
that, you know, it's crucial,
getting the strikeouts back against teams that are like, you know,
the Royals and are like the Blue Jays.
who put the ball in play, that's an issue for this team.
You know, that's a problem.
And it makes their jobs very, very difficult.
When you're a pitched contact team and you've got teams that you're going up against that are contact teams,
something's got to give.
And in those two series, it was the Cardinals who ended up giving.
Libertor, shockingly, now three and six, the area of 4.17, you don't feel like he's pitched that badly to have numbers like that.
But the last three games recently have been really, really rough for him.
So those are the three guys that really stood out to me.
Obviously, you want more from everybody involved.
I need more from Ryan Helsley as the closer, you know, giving up the blown saves three in a row.
That sucks, man.
That's, you know, debilitating to a team to go from looking like you're going to win a game to and then getting flipped on you.
You know, that hurts.
That's a kick to the, you know what?
So he needs to be better, obviously.
I feel like the bullpen hasn't been so bad.
I mean, you can't expect perfection out of them every single time they go out there.
But I think if you get those three guys back to being what they were in May,
that you'll see this team turn around quicker.
So those are them that need to step up.
We're going to talk about the White Sox.
You know, they're going to Chicago, and they got a chance to get right against the Chicago White Sox.
So we'll talk about that series next on Locked on Cardinals.
If you're running a business, you know, as well as I do, that every missed call is money left on the table.
That can't happen.
Think about the last time that you had a service emergency, right?
Say you had a problem with the plumber, which has happened in my house a couple of times since I moved on to it.
Say something goes wrong.
You call a plumber.
First guy doesn't, or first gal, whoever, doesn't answer.
Do you just stop calling people?
No.
You move on down the line and you try to find somebody who can help you as quickly as they can and do it at a reasonable price.
So that's why having a reliable business line is so important.
And that's why you need open phone.

YouTube or wherever you listen to your podcast. Carls begin a three-game series on Tuesday with
the White Sox who have been better recently. Give them credit. They're four and six and their last 10.
Cardinals haven't been doing any better, so we can't throw stones. But six and 14 in their last 20,
they're 23 and 49 on the year. Second worst record in the league other than the Rockies.
Coming off, setting a modern day record for losses in 2024 when they went 41 in 121.
Bottom line is the Cardinals should beat them. Of course, you want to sweep.
Everyone wants to sweep.
Every time you play anybody, you want to win all your games.
But at the very least, in this series, the Cardinals need to get a series win.
They got to take two or three.
They got to start feeling better about themselves.
You need the confidence back.
And tonight's pitching matchup, not a great one.
And I'll tell you why.
First of, you got Matthew Libertor, who you're hoping will get right, okay?
You trust Matthew Libertor.
You think that maybe this is just a bump in the road for him.
Hopefully he gets right tonight against this White Sox offense.
But on the other side, Chicago's got a kid's throwing named Shane Smith, 25 years old, three and three on the year.
But the ERA, 2.37, 2.37 over 13 starts.
That is not a trend.
That is just who he is right now.
Was an undrafted free agent, too.
Milwaukee signed him.
Surprise.
Milwaukee found a good player.
Played at Wake Forest, undrafted, but the socks were able to grab him in the Rule 5 draft.
and he makes their rotation out of spring training.
And he's been a bright spot for them, dude.
He has not allowed more than 300 runs in any of his starts so far this year.
And he's coming off two really good starts against two really good teams.
A.O. West leading Houston Astros and then the Detroit Tigers,
who have the best record in baseball.
Against those two teams, he's throwing a combined 11 in a third inning.
So he's not going super deep into games, gets to six innings maybe.
allowed just one run against him, 10 heads, 10 strikeouts, and four walks.
And you know as well as I did.
We've seen Houston.
We've seen Detroit already.
We know how tough those lineups can be.
Clearly, he is doing something right.
And then you go and look at his pitching repertoire, and you're like, I don't see anything
here either.
Fastball changed up slider curb ball, the occasional sinker mixed in.
It's not a power guy.
Fastball sits at 95.
So where is all of this goodness coming from?
Off speed stuff.
The curve and the change have his highest whiff rates.
So get ready for that.
Because that's what he's going to fool you with.
The opponents are only hitting 123 against the changeup.
So get ready to be frustrated with the Cardinals swinging and missing at changeups.
Because that's how we get you.
What, like 44, 45% fastball guy and then the changeup and the curveball.
And that's how he gets it.
What I want to see is I want to see the Cardinals play more like they were earlier in the year where they were doing all the little things right.
That's what I yearn for with the Cardinals.
I've been watching a lot of Tampa Bay raise baseball lately because they've been on this hot streak.
And I just love seeing how other teams are figuring out ways to win when they don't have big payrolls and big superiors.
superstars everywhere.
You could say junior Caminero is a superstar in the making for them.
I can accept that.
But the rest of their lineup,
you're not looking at stars up and down it,
but yet they figure out ways to win.
And that's what the Cardals were doing earlier in the season.
And the rays just beat you in so many ways.
And when the Cardinals were playing well,
that's what they were doing.
Remember we used to talk about it where it's like,
oh, this relentless lineup, it doesn't matter.
There's no super weak spot anywhere in there.
And now we've got weak spots all over the place, specifically at the top of the order right now and at the bottom.
So when you get from Newt, Newton, and when, and then you get through the lineup,
and then you got Victor Scott and he's been struggling, that's three guys in a row that are batting next to each other that are doing nothing at the plate for the last couple weeks.
That's a problem.
So I don't know if Bolly needs to break them up somehow, some way to get things moving in a different direction.
I don't know, but it just feels like the aspect of the Cardinals being kind of like that desperate team that would do anything for a run.
Like they don't do that anymore.
It doesn't feel like that way, does it?
Like, it just feels like they're back to going through the motions.
And instead of dictating the game offensively, they're letting the other team do it to them.
That's just how I feel about it.
Getting Newt and Wynn and Donnie and Victor going again are obvious ways.
to get this team moving in the right direction again.
I just want to see better baseball, though, you know, all around, you know, off offensively,
but, you know, with the base running and the bunting and manufacturing runs,
I need to see that.
You're a team right now that it should be desperate because of the way things are going,
and they haven't acted like a desperate team, in my opinion yet.
The White Sox on the offensive side don't have a lot of firepower.
Miguel Vargas is the guy that you got to key in on.
when it comes to their lineup, leads the club and home runs and RBI is hitting 350 over his last
five games.
Luis Robert is still there.
A lot of talent, but he's hitting 194.
He will run if he gets on base.
We know how the Cardinals have an issue with slowing down the base running and base stealing of other teams.
So keep an eye on that.
Chase Midroth is a guy that has been solid for them this year.
So he's a guy to keep an eye on.
But there's not like these three or four guys where you're just like, oh, man, this is going to be
exhausting. No, this is clearly a team that the Cardinals are better than should beat them.
Got to get a serious win here at the very least. Got to take two or three. We've got to turn this
mojo around. We've got to get this confidence back going and flowing through that clubhouse and in that dugout.
And Chicago White Sox are a team that you can do that against, but you got to take advantage of it.
So I want to see some desperation out of the Cardinals in this three game.
series. I don't want, forget that you're playing the White Sox.
Act like you're playing a playoff wow card three game series and you've got to win
at least two because that's where I feel the Cardinals are right now.
If they go out there and lay an egg tonight and lose to the White Sox, like how deflating
is that going to be? Can't let it happen. Can't let it happen. Not with Libby on the mound.
