So the Cardinals had some minor leaguers that did pretty good in this past week. One of those guys, Nolan Gorman, keeps hitting home runs. So we'll talk a little bit about them. But we've got a lot to cover over what happened this weekend with the Colorado Rockies

Starting point is 00:00:56 in town and the Cardinals. I mean, I'm not trying to get overly excited or anything. I understand that, you know, this is a team that probably is not going anywhere. I understand that. I completely do. But at the same time, they won the ball games they needed to win. You know, I mean, they take two or three for the Rockies, which isn't something that you should, like, get overly excited about.

Starting point is 00:01:29 The Rockies have the worst record in the National League and have the least amount of wins in baseball on the road. You're supposed to beat the rocks. You're supposed to beat them when they come to your ballpark. Coors Field is a different story. We know how that can be a little bit different. But considering how the Cardinals have played since the All-Star break, how bad the offense and the bullpen have been,

Starting point is 00:01:51 you can't take anything for granted. You know, we've seen them struggle against multiple teams that we thought they should have beat. And because of that, they are still sitting at the 500 mark and three and a half back in the wildcard chase. behind the Phillies who were in town tonight to begin that three-game series. Now, since we didn't have shows all weekend, we need to kind of go back and assess what we saw in these three games. You get the off day on Thursday, which was great, which was nice.

Starting point is 00:02:17 Coming off, the series went over the Yankees in New York. So happy vibes coming home. You got the Rockies waiting for you, a team you're supposed to beat. You got Kyle Leahy on the mountain. Got the start and has to be expected of the offense, which really had only one good game in New York, stumbles again. But Kyle Leahy turns in another solid start. And how much fun has it been to see Kyle Leahy this year? We've seen him pitch better than he did on Friday, that's for sure.

Starting point is 00:02:45 But another solid start. He gives you the five-innings, strikes out eight, pitches around a lot of traffic, but no walks, which will always make me smile. And when guys were on base, and there was plenty of them, he figured out ways to get out of trouble. That's what pitchers do. and Kyle Leahy has very much been under the radar for most of the season, but has been pretty darn good for like three months now.

Starting point is 00:03:11 If you go back to the beginning of May, he's now made 16 starts, 83 innings, which averages out to a little over five innings, which is one of the things that if you don't want to point at something about Kyle Leahy can go, yeah, that really needs to improve. It's just going longer in games. But five strikeouts per start, less than two runs per start at one. point six less than five hits at four point nine he's got an era of two point seven one in those 16 starts and his fifth is at three point one five which is excellent the record is five and one

Starting point is 00:03:47 for him and astonishingly the team in his 16 starts which is seven and nine because the offense has been so buns that it wouldn't matter if bob gibson was on that hill it is really really really hard to win if your offense can't put any runs on the board for you. Cardinals have scored two or less runs in seven of those 16 starts. Makes it real difficult. Makes it real difficult to get wins. And even more recently for Kyle Leahy, over the last eight starts, he's got a 1.49 ERA. The FIP is at 2.83 because under three is deemed elite. And he's at 2.83 in his last eight starts. 40 strikeouts, only nine walks, over 42 and a third innings. He's 3 and 0, but the team is 4 and 4.

Starting point is 00:04:36 It just makes you wonder, like, what this team would be like if the offense hadn't gone into this bizarre shell that they have slipped into. I continue to believe there is more to this offense than what we are seeing. And you just need guys to step up and be better. You know, it was great seeing Alec Berlison put the team on his shoulders with the three home run night on, what was that, Monday in New York. I need bigger moments like that from your star players. You know, Yvonne Herrera just had a big weekend.

Starting point is 00:05:10 J.J. Weatherholt comes up huge. Got to get Jordan Walker going again. That would be ideal. You know, we just, you would like to get more out of the third base position in general offensively. but these are things that we've talked about before. But the pitching staff has been pretty good, at least the starters. So we know the bullpen is what it is. But Kyle Leahy, Dusty Blake, the staff, they deserve a lot of credit for this transformation

Starting point is 00:05:39 where Leahy goes from reliever to one of the most reliable starters on the staff. You know, you just think about Kyle Leahy and what we've gotten from, Andre Palantec. Like, did you expect these seasons to be as good as they are from those two guys? Hell no. So just those two by themselves should be commended for Dusty Blaking Company. Like outstanding stuff. If only, we could bottle up that magic that they've conjured for those two guys and put it to work for Matthew Libertor,

Starting point is 00:06:19 who laid yet another egg on Saturday night. I got to talk about that game. And of course, we'll get into Sunday's big win and the big moment for J.J. Weatherholed at the end there. And all of that. Plus, again, we are going to talk about some of the minor leagues stats that stood out from over the weekend as well. Quinn Matthews, not a great start. But we got some other things to talk about. Plus, we'll preview that Philly series as well.

Jekyll and Hyde, who's it going to be? First pitch of the game kind of let us know who it was going to be on Saturday. First pitch he

Starting point is 00:08:21 throws, lands in the seats. Bing! Not exactly the tone you want to set to start. And it really didn't get all that much better for him the rest of the way for a guy who just can not seem to consistently pitch well. It's one side of the other. He's either really good or he's really bad. Five runs, nine hits over five innings on Saturday night. The offense had a lot more

Starting point is 00:08:49 success on Saturday, which made it a much better ballgame. It was an entertaining ballgame. They even grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first. They gave Libby a lead. Thanks to the two-run double by Jose Fermin, who had a huge nine at the dish. I think he was on base like five times. In the end, the offense ended up scoring six runs on 10 hits. They took walks, which was great. I think that was like six walks in that game, too. But still, the real problem offensively in this one was runners in scoring position. Three for 16.

Starting point is 00:09:20 Three for 16. Not good enough. You stranded 12 people. Not good enough. Not good enough. Far too many, especially when you're digging yourself out of a hole. Because after they gave Libby the lead, he gives it right back. Libby gave up three more in the third inning and another in that fifth inning,

Starting point is 00:09:38 leaves the game, scores five to three, but the bullpen, well, you know, I always say bullpen, but, you know, he really got to call them out singularly here, you know, Louise Gastellum. How are they saying it now, Gastilum, is that how they're saying it now? Luis Gastilum, Peter Strzlecki, they allow three runs after Libby left. The offense couldn't catch up. They fall eight to six. Libby is won just two of his last 11 starts, continues to be. the biggest mystery of all in

Starting point is 00:10:05 26. It is so weird how we cannot get this guy to just stay the course. I mean, we just saw him throw six shutout innings in Toronto. Seven strikeouts. That was his last start. Beautiful stuff. What happens

Starting point is 00:10:25 to where you go from that to what we saw on Saturday? I can't explain it. Like it's so bizarre how it just goes night and day difference. And it's not like it's a home ballpark or an away ballpark thing. He's equally bad on the road or at home, which is perplexing considering what a pitcher-friendly ballpark, Bush Stadium has been this season.

Starting point is 00:10:52 Once again, we're watching this Colorado series. And I'm seeing balls that look like they should be five rows deep and they just die at the warning track. And he's actually, Libyan's giving up more home runs at Bush than on the road this year. which is weird. He's got 12 starts at home. He's three and four, 5.16 ERA and 11 dingers against at Bush Stadium. On the road, he started 11 games. He's two and five with a 5.13 ERA, nine dingers against. He's got 63 strikeouts on the road and only 47 home. It's so weird. Like, who is this guy? And I know people keep saying, well,

Starting point is 00:11:37 why is he in the rotation anymore? Why don't we just put him in the bullpen and whatnot. Is he going to be getting the bullpen? Is it going to be like this then too? Where it's like one day he can be all right. Next day he's going to be trash. I don't know. Nobody knows.

Starting point is 00:11:54 If they knew, they'd figure it out by now. It's one of life's great mysteries. Luis Gastilum, man, I had such high hopes for him. And again, he's a rookie, but it's been a real bummer to see him not succeed more at the major league level. I was really excited to see him. Every dayers know this.

Starting point is 00:12:12 I was pumping him up in spring training. I want to see this change up. I want to see what he does with it. He's killing it with the Memphis Redbirds, dominating down there at AAA. And it really feels like every time he comes into a game, he gives up a big hit or a home run that turns the tide of a game. You know, again, it was five to three.

Starting point is 00:12:34 He comes in, boom, two run shot, looking at a seven to three deficit. and where this offense is, you're like, oh, man, how are we going to get back for? And it didn't happen. He has now given up runs in nine of his last 12 appearances, has a lot of five long balls in just 13 into third innings. And I know we are trying to get these rookies some action and to learn from things that they are experiencing right now.

Starting point is 00:12:59 But like when he gets the call, you almost expect disaster every time he comes into the game now, which is not what I expected when he got called up. Again, he was dominating at Memphis. Nobody was touching him. Nobody was scoring on him. And it just has not manifested in the big leagues yet. I'm not punting on him. I'm not quitting on him.

Starting point is 00:13:23 He's taking his bumps right now. And these are things that hopefully he'll become better for later on in the future. But I know it's still an outside thing. But when you're thinking about wild card and stuff like that, and you've got so many question marks. in your bullpen, it's tough to keep calling on the kid. But, you know, Ollie's only got so many arms he can call on. Sucks because you need them.

Starting point is 00:13:49 You need them. They need trustworthy arms. And it's been a crap shoot, the keyword being crap for most of the season with the ballpen. Offensively on Saturday, I mentioned for me, and again, reach base five times, two hits, three walks. And I know he's not the sexiest player on the planet. I know.

Starting point is 00:14:06 nobody's ever going to be like, ooh, I can't wait to go see Jose for me and play baseball today. That's not where we're at with him. But you need guys like Kim. He's become a valuable part of the roster this year. You need him to fill holes and be able to play outfield and infield and be at right-handed bat, which apparently is the hardest thing in the world to come by these days. And on a better overall roster, I think he would still have a place as a utility guy

Starting point is 00:14:32 for a really good team, kind of like, like Edmundo Soso, for Sosa for the Phillies, like kind of in that kind of role. I think he's got a place. I like watching Jose for me and play. I'm not as hard on him as a lot of people are, but I think he's valuable. And certainly after the trade of Newport,

Starting point is 00:14:53 that's he's going to be more valuable. Yvonne Herrera, great to see. Three hit night on Saturday. Jordan Walker finally hits his 23rd home run of the season. Hadn't had one since Milwaukee on July the 9th. Absolute tank. over the Colorado bullpen, but it wasn't enough in the end as they fall 8 to 6,

Starting point is 00:15:10 which brings us to Sunday's game, which had Michael McGreevy on the mound. And he's trying to pick a, it's crazy to look at the stats here, but McGreevy was trying to pick up his first win since July 8th. Like, think about that. Jordan Walker hadn't hit a home run since the 9th. Michael McGreevy hadn't picked up a win since the 8th, and he'd only had one since May 9th.

Starting point is 00:15:34 Spanning 14 starts if my math is correct. And like Leahy, they weren't all his fault. Sure, there were some bad games in there, but from June 1st to July 17, eight starts, just 15 earned runs against the ERA is at 2.83. He goes one and three with the team going three and five. Just a little more offense. Just imagine. He has been hit around more frequently recently, which you kind of figured what happened.

Starting point is 00:16:02 He's a pitch to contact guy and has very little room for mistakes. And you're starting to see teams like they just keep fouling balls off against him because he can't punch him out because he doesn't have the stuff, so to speak, to do that. And they just wear him down. And if you can't get that swing and miss when you really need it, it makes life very, very tough. And when he does make a mistake, boy, does he get popped more times than not. Sunday was more of the same. It wasn't that he was bad. He wasn't like Chicago Cubs game bad.

Starting point is 00:16:35 but he allowed to lead off double to, you know, the newly crown greatest hitter on the planet, Jake McCarthy, who had absolutely bonkers in the series against our pitching staff. Nine for 14, two home runs, five runs scored, three rebis, two stolen bases. My fantasy team, thanks you, Jake McCarthy. I've been writing him for a couple of months now.

Starting point is 00:16:57 He was like, you got to find those sneaky Colorado hitters. There's just always like one or two that go off. It's like him and Mickey Moniac, Rumsfield. like Goodman, somebody, everybody knows. But you got to find those sneaky guys. And I found McCarthy a long time ago. I was like, I like what he does. And he crushed it this week, which sucks for our Cardinals.

Starting point is 00:17:17 But the double starts the game. McGreevy gets that double play. But then the two out single by Goodman to make it one to nothing. Card's offense answers against Michael Lorenzen in the bottom half with an RBI single by Jordan Walker. McGreevy had to work out of a couple of pretty tense situations. And there were people on base a lot, you know, eight hits, he walked two. That's going to happen. But he ends up pitching into the sixth inning.

Starting point is 00:17:40 And thanks to that sack fly by Crooks, you get an RBI double by Mason win. And that long home run by Alec Burleson, that was, talk about tanks. That was awesome to see. Cardles were sitting pretty at four and one. But after he retired, the first two batterers in the inning, he gives up the double. And then the home run, not that double, first of all, they double should have been a home run. Like, it's a home run. I don't know it was every other ballpark, but it died.

Starting point is 00:18:05 And then he does give up the home run. So now we got a four to three game. It's another type ball game, something the Cardinals have seen a lot of this year. So it's not new. Sadly, something else that wasn't new is the ball pin coming in and giving up a run to tie it up. When Hunter Goodman takes George Soriano deep to left on Soriano's very first pitch of the eighth inning, wasn't even a bad pitch. It was inside. Goodman just opened up his hips and turned on it.

Starting point is 00:18:29 Sometimes the hitters win. Sometimes they win. We got a tight ball game. And now we're thinking about, I know how we were thinking, the stress of possibly losing a series at home to the Rockies. It got into your head. It crept into your head. You know what did.

Starting point is 00:18:43 Soriano, by the way, has seven blown saves on the season, which is the second most in the league. In first place, Kyle Finnegan with eight, who is with the Detroit Tigers. So, yeah, now we're all doing the same thing. We're all sweating because it's hot. And because we're worried that we're really going to blow this and lose two out of three to Colorado. We saw it happen last year, if I remember.

Starting point is 00:19:06 Wasn't it last year? Wasn't it like the White Sox the year before that we couldn't, we lost it home? And then it was Colorado last year. So back-to-back years were like the worst team of baseball. Cardinals are losing to them. But thank God. We got a guy.

Starting point is 00:19:19 We got a guy. We extended him. His name's J.J. Weatherhole. For all the talk about NL. Rookie of the Year stuff, which there's been a lot of, continues to be debated between cards and Reds fans daily. I got into a lot of hot water over the weekend because people keep thinking I'm like rooting

Starting point is 00:19:38 against J.J. Weatherholt and this in this rookie of the year stuff and I'm not. I want him to win. I'm just saying I can see why they were going to choose Sal Stewart over him. But moments like this on Sunday, we need more of this from him and that will get him past the lack of offensive numbers that he has compared to South Stewart when it comes to, you know, like the RBIs and the home runs and whatnot. Because this was a great moment. Rocky's bringing a lefty to face him in the eighth inning, two on, two out, and JJ

Starting point is 00:20:09 tattoos when, again, would have been a home run in almost every other ballpark. First pitch, center field, rips it over the head of the center fielder, two run double. It's clutch moments like this that we saw earlier in the season from him that it sparked this offense so often, which is how the cardals were winning games. Like they were getting more offense early on because JJ was doing so much damage. And he was doing things like this. Like he's only bad in 208 so far in the month of August. But that was a huge moment.

Starting point is 00:20:42 That was huge. I mean, this is the guy that you just paid. He's one of your new pillars of the organization. And we need him to step up. We need more of this instead of rolling over two second base. And we got it. And we got it in a huge spot. Cool staff from Rob Brains at SELSportspage.com.

Starting point is 00:21:02 Weatherholt's 19th hit in 58 at bats that ended on the first pitch. So that's a 328 average. He's hitting on the first pitch. So I give these guys a lot of crap for swinging at the first pitch. I hate it more times than not. Like I'm like, dude, can you just show a little bit of patience? Make that pitcher's job a little bit harder. But some of them.

Starting point is 00:21:26 have a lot of success on that first pitch. So JJ being one of them. So it's hard to complain about it when my guys hit in 328 on the first pitch. Herrera follows it up with an RBI single, his fourth hit on the day. Cardinals take a 7 to 4 lead. Riley O'Brien shuts it down in the ninth inning. You get that hell of a diving catch by the newcomer, Everson, Ferreira, in left to end it.

Starting point is 00:21:48 I saw the play earlier in the series where he had no idea where the ball was. I was like, uh-oh, uh-oh. I don't need to see that, but he's made a couple of really nice catches. So you can see the athleticism in him and why, you know, if Nelson Velasquez, he was hammering lefties like we thought he might, why he would have stuck around. But you need somebody who can come in and help you defensively and be an athlete and steal some bases and stuff like that, things that Nelson Velasquez could not do.

Starting point is 00:22:19 And he wasn't hitting home runs or anything. So what was the use of him anymore? So give us somebody else. chance. A guy used to be a top prospect in the Yankees organization. Riley picks up, Riley O'Brien picks up a 29th save, which keeps them tied with Mason Miller for the NL lead. Cardinals take two of three. They've won back-to-back series and continue to, like I said, hang around in the Zeno Wildcard, three and a half back of Philly, who they begin a three-game series with tonight. You got Star Power galore with Trey Turner, Kyle Schwerber, Bryce Harper. They just traded for Louisa Rise. They fired their manager again this year and moved on to Don Mattingly. Stud, right? They've got multiple aces and Christopher Sand. Zack Wheeler, Jesus Lazzardo.

Starting point is 00:26:07 They got one of the best closers in baseball in Johan Duran, aka the Durantula. That's a great name, by the way. I hope we don't see him in the series. But there's still, despite all of us, the Phillies are eight and a half back in the Braves in the East and had a really bad July like the Cardinals. They were nine and 15.

Starting point is 00:26:25 They just lost two of three at home against Toronto. They're nine and 13 since the All-Star break. So it's not like they're coming in, just right in this hot wave of goodness. And the Cardinals are sitting here waiting, winning back-to-back series against the Yankees and, yes, the Rockies, but they're wins. They count just like they would against anybody else. So winning the series would certainly do wonders for your confidence, which I think the Yankee series did for them. Plus it keeps you lingering around in this wild card.

Starting point is 00:26:54 Which despite the awful July for the Cardinals and selling at the deadline is still technically viable. Do I have a lot of confidence that they're going to catch up and get you? into this thing again. Not necessarily, but this series is very important. You got to beat the teams in front of you if you want us to believe in that and you want to make up ground. The cardals are going to face Philly six times this month. So they have an opportunity to eat into the lead that Philly has over them. Will they do it? Is the real question. And it won't be easy. Again, Philly on paper should be a monster team. Monster team. They should be doing things like the Tampa Bay Rays, but they haven't quite been as good as people thought they'd be. The guy,

Starting point is 00:27:34 I tend to worry about more than, you know, the Kyle Schwerber's and the Bryce Harper's who are always going to get the attention. But it's always the lower tier guys that bug me on this team, like the Alex Bomes, Brandon Marshes and his wet hair and the Bryce and Stott's of the roster. Bryce and Stott's been hitting really, really well. I can always, I can almost picture it where Bryce and Stott's going to be a pain in the butt this whole series. Like I said, focus always on the big names. But it's those next tier down guys that It seemed to always burn the Cardinals. Guys who were hitting 6, 7, 8, 9 in the order.

Starting point is 00:28:09 Those are the ones that just kick us right in the beanbag all the time. And then that sets things up for the big dudes at the top of the order, and they'll have their own damage. And now you've added a Louisa Rise to this, which is, you know, the ultimate contact guy. A lot of lefties to contend with, too, on this roster. So get ready, Justin Brule and Caleb Ferguson. Drink some Gatorade.

Starting point is 00:28:33 Get ready. because you're going to be out there a bunch. Hunter Dobbins versus Andrew Painter tonight, Tuesday, Andre Palante versus Christopher Sanchez. That is, that's going to be a tough matchup. Kyle Leahy, Zach Wheeler on Wednesday's day game. Here you go. Opportunity await you. It's up to you to make it happen. Down at Memphis, Nolan, Gorman, 11th home run of the year on Sunday, 7th in his last 11 games. So he's been on a bit of a heater. The batting average again is still not good. but he's hitting long balls.

Starting point is 00:29:20 Injuries have ruined this year for him so far, but he was really good last year. And as a guy that I was pretty excited about, and he got back on the mound, dominated in his AAA debut on Sunday, four and two-thirds, hitless. and scoreless innings. Now, I did walk four, but no runs, no heads.

Starting point is 00:29:37 I'll take that in his first start off the I-L. Ryan Fernandez, Cade Winquist, combined for two and a third scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Again, we're always thinking about there were some people who might be able to come up and help this team. Keep those guys in mind. Friday night, Quinn Matthews, wow, not great. Allowed four runs, three earned for his six walks,

Starting point is 00:29:59 struck out four in just three innings pitch. Yikes. Yikes. Gotta be better than that if you want to get back to the show. Raydale Rodriguez, three more home runs this week for Springfield on the season. Now hitting 298 with 18 bombs, 60 ribbies combined at A&A at Springfield alone. He's hitting 293 with 14 dingers and 39 RBIs and 62 games. I can't wait to see him in the show one day.
