The lack of pitching depth in the Cardinals organization reared its fugly head again on Monday and a vomit-inducing loss to the Cincinnati Red.

Hey, there Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Haffordan, a former national radio sports anchor born and raised in the Lou with a lifetime Cardinals fan.

On today's show, we'll be discussing the successful return of Nolan Aronado to the lineup,
although his future looking pretty murky once again.
We're going to take a look around the league as another team successfully brings up one of their top prospects
and why it makes me jealous.
But we're going to start with what went down on Monday night at Bush Stadium, where for seven
innings, we had a pretty entertaining game between the Reds and the Cardinals before the poop
hit the fan and things went sideways real fast. First off, props to Matthew Libertor for giving
the birds six strong innings. By now, you know the story with Libby. First of the year is a starter.
And as we get down to the final starts for him, the fatigue of pitching an entire season,
and certainly going to start creeping in even more.
Hadn gone five innings or more since, what, June 29th?
So to see him get through six and look relatively good while doing it was certainly a bonus.
Libby must be just a sweaty dude because he always looks like he's dying out there on the
mouth.
Like he just looks miserable, just caked and sweat, which might be a little misleading to how tired
or not tired he actually is.
I know it's been an extremely hot and thick summer in St. Louis and in the Medwood.
Midwest in general weather-wise.
But third inning yesterday, I was watching him and just the body language.
And he just looked miserable out there, right?
He was just giving me the vibes that he was already gassed,
but continue to push through until the end of the season.
And he did his job on Monday.
I can't really fault him for anything.
Final line, six innings, three runs, only two of them earned,
four hits, six strikeouts, one walk, one very hard home run,
given up off the bat of Reds rookie, South Stewart.
Just a fastball up in the zone and the kid didn't miss it.
Now, the profile for Stewart says that he is 21 years old.
Not what it is?
21 years old.
The dude looks like he's more like 28.
Let me, let me get you a picture of Sal Stewart.
Let me throw this up here real quick for you guys on, on YouTube.
Check us out.
This guy.
This guy.
21 years old, come on.
Come on.
I'm kidding. He's probably 21, but one thing's for certain, I don't care how old he is.
The dude can swing the bat. He can swing the bat. It's a vicious cut. And I, for one,
I'm not looking forward to having to deal with Sal Stewart for the next decade while he wears a Cincinnati red uniform.
And if we're going to, can we get Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman to watch some tape on this kid and learn how to swing like him, please?
because he looks like he comes to the plate and he's going to do damage every time.
And he did some last night.
But a great start for Libbyo Baral.
And although it took the offense a bit to start to come around and get it going against
Red Starters, Zach Lutel, they ended up doing that with two outs in the sixth inning.
And going into the 7th, the Cardinals sitting here with a four to three lead.
Now, normally the ballpen is super reliable.
But on Monday, we knew that it was going to, we knew this coming into the game,
that it was going to be a short-handed ballpen.
after having a pitch as much as they did on Saturday and Sunday in Milwaukee,
the team was going to be without their three top guns.
Matt Fonson, Jojo Romero, and Riley O'Brien,
unavailable in this one.
They're down.
And it's okay.
We knew that.
But that leaves the B squad, all right?
And these guys, you know, the B squad for the Cardinals,
it's not really a B squad.
It's more like it goes from your A guys to like D squad.
wide real fast, right? This is the B is a little bit too, too nice. They're D's. They're not good.
And these are some guys that have proven that they do not belong on this roster or any major
league roster, to be honest with you. They aren't good enough to handle major league hitting.
They just can't get these guys out. The sad reality is for the Cardinals that after trading away
three solid arms at the deadline in Helsley, Mayton, and Matt's, the Cardinals have to use guys like
this who don't belong, they're going to have to use them at some point and you just got to hope
and pray that they can get through it because there's not enough organizational depth or at least
any guys that they want to bring up and put in the major leagues right now that can do better.
And they're going to leave these guys down at Memphis.
And that's just the way it is.
And you're hoping that you can squeeze by and not, you know, have a game like this happen Monday.
It didn't work. It didn't work. Chris Roycroft was the first one through the gate.
And I was sitting there watching the game with my wife, who's a Reds fan for you every day.
So you guys know that. And as soon as he came out, I was like, oh boy. Oh, boy. I was like,
you guys are going to love this because this dude is not good. He immediately gives up a single.
Then he walks, L.A. Dela Cruz, gets a ground out, but then gives up a ground rule double to Matt McLean.
Lead gone, happy vibes gone. Chris Roycroft, gone.
Ali Yanks him turns it over to John King, who gives up a single.
to make it six four before he ends the inning.
Cardinals offense, good for them.
They fight back.
They tie this game back up at six,
but then the bullpen gate swings open again,
and here comes Ryan Fernandez.
Oh, boy.
I'm like, wife, give me the Tylenol.
Give me the Tylenol.
This is not going to go well.
I've already seen enough of him this year
to know that this was going to be a disaster,
and it was.
It was bad.
After getting the first doubt, single, walk, walk,
Walk. Ollie's like enough of this crap. Brian Fernandez, you're out. Get out of here.
Ollie goes to Cal Leahy, who granted has been pretty good this year in the grand scheme of things.
Every reliever is going to have bumps in the road. Nobody's going to be perfect.
And overall, considering how much he's been used, really,
Kyle Leahy hasn't been that bad. All right. I know you want better. But for what we expected out,
Leahy, I don't think he's been that bad. But you bring anybody into a base is loaded, one-out situation.
not exactly ideal for anyone, gives up a sack fly to Will Benson and then Whist McLean.
So it doesn't let it get out of control, you know, the Reds end up taking the lead,
but things, you know, could have been much worse there.
And they got worse in the ninth inning.
Lead off walk, always horrible, single, strikeout, infield single, single,
the deflects off Leahy to bring in a run and then the base is clearing double by Tyler
Stevenson and blows things open and it's over.
But all of this really goes back to the two useless appearances by Chris Roycroft and Ryan Fernandez.
They were awful.
They combined to throw two thirds of an inning.
They each got one out.
They allowed four runs on three heads, three walks, no strikeouts, just a big,
stinky bag of suck is what they were.
And it's been this way for them for a while.
This is not new.
I don't have any hope when either one.
of them comes into a game. To expect them to do anything good is a joke. You're kidding yourself.
Roycroft has given up at least two hits at his last four appearances and in his last eight
appearances the team is 0 at 8 and he's got an ERA of 9.72. He's not good. It's over.
Ryan Fernandez has given up at least a run in four of his last five appearances has an ERA of 15.75.
The fact that these two guys are still in this bullpen continues to show the lack of depth that the team has in the pitching department.
They don't belong here.
They don't belong in the major leagues.
They should finish their time at AAA or find another organization to go waste time with.
They're not good.
Whatever the Ryan Fernandez we had last year, I don't know where he went.
He's not here.
He hasn't been here all year.
it's been a disaster for both of them.
That combination, anytime they seem to come into a game,
granted, the cartels are probably losing already at the time,
at least that's what it feels like.
But at other times, they don't do anything to stop the bleeding.
They continually just make things worse.
And it's frustrating to watch that because you know
what's coming when they come into a game.
And I understand, again,
the cardinals traded away three,
really good dudes at the deadline.
And if you put those three guys back into this bullpen with the guys you already have,
that you consider to be good guys, you'd have an pretty awesome bullpen.
But that's just not where we are right now.
So it doesn't mean I have to like it.
I hate that these two guys are wearing this uniform.
And if us watching the game feel this way when we see these guys come into a game,
imagine what the players feel like.
They're like, well, who else we got?
it sucks. It sucks that this is where we are at the end of the season, you know?
And I realize the year is basically over. But, you know, even today I'm in a meeting with people
talking about it with the MLB guys and they're like, well, I mean, four and a half out. It's
unimpossible. And I'm like, you guys have way more faith in this thing than I do.
When we've got dudes like Roycroft and Fernandez and, you know, Andre Palante still making
starts, like, like how do you see this for going better?
It's not. It's not. And I've accepted it.
And I got a little worked up about it.
The Cardinals did get some solid offense last night.
That was for sure. Okay. And we saw the return of Nolan Aronado and he was right in the middle of things.
And that was cool. How's his future looking? Does he know what it's going to be like this offseason?
I've got some info for you coming up next on Locked on Cardinals.
Today's episode brought to you by Nutraful.

And I love that you're here with me.
But sometimes you just want to boom, boom, boom.
And that's why you put shorts out there for you, like 60 seconds.
You're in, you're out.
It's good.
One of the positives from Monday's loss was the offense.
a slow start, as I mentioned earlier,
but eventually they did do some two-out damage,
which is always fun to do.
You hate it when it happens to you.
You love doing it against your competition, right?
Two-out damage is a whole lot of fun.
And not once but twice,
the Cardinals were able to score runs
and get at that Reds pitching staff with two outs.
They end up getting six runs on 10 hits.
They go six for 11 with runners in scoring position.
Like, that's unheard of stuff for the Cardinals, right?
Normally that would get you a W didn't happen.
on Monday night because the bullpen was awful.
One of the guys in the middle of this whole thing was Nolan Arnado.
And it was great to see him returning from the injured list,
had that shoulder issue, started with the finger,
went to the shoulder,
been working his way back for quite a while now.
So it was nice to see Nolan back at the ballpark.
A good night for him.
It goes two for four with an RBI single and his first dip back,
kind of like a three-quarter swing, kind of like,
I'm going to just kind of lay this one out there.
But then he smoked that double the right.
or later on in that seventh inning and that guy,
the rally going once again for the Cardinals,
it was nice to have them back.
You know,
part of me feels bad for Nolan Aronado.
And you can point out,
yeah,
he's making millions of dollars,
this and that,
but part of me feels bad for Nolan Aronado
because he comes back after finally rehabbing and gets back to the field.
And then he sees Bush Stadium with like 2,000 people in it.
Like,
that sucks.
Just an empty stadium.
And he's coming back to a team that is all.
all but done for the year.
He's got to watch Chris Roycroft and Ryan Fernandez come into a game where he's
working hard over there at third, playing good third base, getting this team back into things
and to see just that come out of the bullpen.
That's got to be miserable.
The plan is to let him play over the final 11 games of the season.
And we'll see how it goes this off season.
Obviously, things are going to be interesting for the Cardinals because we don't know what
the hell they're going to do.
We don't know what Hyme Bloom is capable of.
and what his plan is moving forward with the veterans.
You know, John Denton did a write up at MLB.com and got some quotes from Nolan Aronado
after the game in regard to the team's rebuilding phase that they're in and what his future
with the organization can look like.
And he said, it seems like that's where this organization is headed.
Whatever, but what's best for me is probably to come back healthy and show that I'm hitting
the ball hard.
But I think what this organization is heading toward is young players and letting them go with
playing time.
that just comes with the territory and I see it.
It's the same thing as this last offseason, you know,
and nothing has changed.
That was the idea.
This offseason, instead of Mo pulling the strings,
it's going to be high in bloom.
But much like Mo did prior to this year,
he's going to have to make a decision on what to do with these veterans like Arnato,
Sunny Gray and Wilson Contreras,
who all have no trade clauses and didn't want to leave.
They wanted to stay in St. Louis, which kind of ruined the whole plan of letting all these younger players get a full year of a lot of the bats and a lot of playing time and accumulate a lot of innings.
They wouldn't leave.
They stayed.
And they stuck around for a team that we knew was not going to be that good.
I thought it was going to be a 500 type of team.
That's kind of where they are, although they're below 500 right now.
But these guys all have no trade clauses so they can veto any deals that the Cardinals.
might want to make. Nato did that when they tried to trade him to Houston. He was like,
I don't know, man. I don't know. They traded away a Cal Tucker and they let Alex Bregman walk.
I don't know. And somehow the Astros have been able to compete in the AOS this entire year.
They just recently fell out of first place. Seattle overtook them. But with all the injuries they've
gone through and to still be where they are, I mean, they're in a much better place as far as winning now.
than the Cardinals are, but Arnaano didn't want to go.
He vetoed the deal.
Didn't ask him if something, a deal like that is something that he'd be more inclined to do
knowing where things are now.
And he said, as you get older, and this year with the injuries and performance things,
it hasn't gone the way I like, but I just don't feel like I'm done.
I feel like I've still got a lot of good ball left in me.
I, for one, am personally going to just enjoy watching him in a Cardinal uniform
over these last 11 games because I really feel like,
Last year, I wasn't so sure.
This time, I really do feel like this is the end of his tenure with the team.
I don't know how they're going to pull this off.
I don't know how they're going to get a deal done with after another subpar year.
And this time it's more injuries for him, 35 years old now.
Still plays a great third base.
But, you know, the hitter that he was is long gone.
But I think someone might jump at the chance to have his personality and his defense over there at the hot corner on their squad.
two years left on the deal.
I don't believe these two years are nearly as expensive as his other years had been.
I think they go down.
I think it was like 16 and 15 million.
I think that's what it was.
I'm hopeful they'll find somebody.
We know the Astros were interested.
Boston was interested until they got Bregman.
So one of these teams that's got some extra money lying around.
I feel like the, I don't think no one ought to hurt your team all that much,
as long as you're not expecting him to be a middle of the order guy anymore.
If he's like your six or seven hitter, I don't think he's going to hurt you all that much.
And he's going to get you that defense down at third base.
Obviously, if he stays healthy.
But he was looking really good down there this year.
I'm just sad that this is how it ended for him in this uniform, if this is going to be the end.
You know, empty stadiums, non-competitive years, like three in a row of just,
just not the happy ending that we all envisioned for him when we got him from Colorado.
and I remember being so excited.
I was like, oh, my God, we got Nolan Aronado.
And for a couple years there, that window was open with him and Goldie,
and they just couldn't push through.
It just never happened.
And I don't know, it just feels like this is probably yet.
But we've got to look towards the future as a franchise.
So minor league players of the month were announced.
So I want to share that information with you.
Also, why I'm jealous of what the Blue Jays accomplished.
last night. They did something on Monday and I'm like,
jealous about it. We'll talk about it next coming up on Lockdown Cardinals.

Josh Allen, let me down this week.
And I took the yell because of it.
And it's funny because Buffalo scored 30 points.
And Josh Allen did nothing, nothing.
He'll be up against the dolphins on Thursday night.

Thank you for making Locktown Cardinals your first list every day for your second list

Your local analysis, but on a national scale, you can find MLB game night on the
locked on MLB YouTube channel or wherever you listen to podcasts, myself and John Frisch,
will be hosting tonight, as we did last night as well, which I was really worked up
last night after the Cardinals lost.
I was so mad.
And what's funny is yesterday's show, I'm sitting going, I don't let it really bother me
so much anymore.
Oh, last night's game bothered me.
And it makes it worse because I live with a Cincinnati Reds fan.
My wife is a Reds fan.
That's where she grew up.
So I got to deal with that.
But even she was like after like the seventh thing, she's like, I'm going to bad.
This game's boring.
Did not stick around for the fireworks for her team.
But either way, I digress.
Let's talk about some happy things, shall we?
Cardinals minor league players of the month were announced and your winners were Joshua Baez, the outfielder.
And we also had Luis Gastilum, who ended up winning the pitcher award.
So let's start with the offensive side, the 22-year-old bias slash 293, 389.
5-07, 5 home runs, 14 rivies, 38 total bases, and 7 stolen bases in 22 games with Springfield.
He's had just an outstanding season.
The Springfield Redbirds, good luck to them in the playoffs, helping lead the AA Cardinals to a 17-10 August record.
On the year, Bias has played at two levels.
He was at high apiorea, and then at Springfield.
And it took a while, but this is one of those prospects when they drafted him.
and they were like, you know, this guy's got a lot of talent,
but, you know, it's going to take a little time to kind of mold him
and get him to where we want them to be.
Well, pretty darn good this year.
So far, combined at high A and at double A, he's hitting 287 with 20 home runs,
79 RBIs and 54 stolen bases.
Yes.
Give me more of that.
Second St. Louis Cardo's minor leaguers since 2005 to amass 40 plus extra base hits
and 50 stolen bases in a single season.
and yes, give me more of that.
Give me more athletes like this playing in a St. Louis Cardinals uniform soon.
Thank you.
The 23-year-old Gasolam posted a 2.93 ERA for saves and a 0.85 whip
and 22 strikeouts across 10 relief appearances, ranking first and save strikeouts and
strikeout walk ratio among Cardinals minor league relievers.
Signed as an international free agent out of Mexico back in 23,
Gasolam owns a 2.82ERA, 0.86.
whip in 71 to 10 strikeout walk ratio since May 15th. He's been real good. We got to see him in the
spring, if you remember. He's got the long hair. You might have recognized him. 23 years old.
Hello, let's go. Get him up here. I want to see him. I don't want to see Chris Roy Kroft and
Ryan Fernandez anymore. Give me, give me some Luis Gastilum soon, please. Hopefully we'll get a chance
to see him next year. Currently writing a 13-inning scoreless streak. Yes, please.
Congratulations to right now Rodriguez and Danielle Ortiz, who we just had on the show last week.
And Jason Sabakul, okay?
Three names that maybe, you know, if you only watch the major leagues, you're not so familiar with.
But Rodriguez, one of the top catching prospects in baseball Ortiz, obviously flying up the rankings for the Cardinals.
And Sabakul, starting pitcher, they were named to the Florida State League postseason,
an all-star team, Palm Beach, tied for the most all-star selections of any Florida
State League team this year.
So well done.
Speaking of prospect, did you guys see what the Blue Jays top prospect, Trey Savage,
did last night?
Nine strikeouts in his major league debut.
I think that was a Blue Jay's record for a rookie.
Seems like I just keep seeing prospects for good and bad teams coming up, making their major
League debut and making impacts at the major league level.
And it just makes me jealous because the Cardinals are not doing that this year.
They're just not.
I want to see J.J. Weatherhole.
I want to see Quinn Matthews on this team.
So bad.
I just want something cool to root for.
And it doesn't appear like that's going to happen.
Like we're not going to get to see these guys in a Cardinal uniform this year.
JJ recently, what he had, almost like a full week off, missed five games in a row due to
general soreness. Okay. And then Matthews, who had that great August, had back-to-back subpart
starts for Memphis, where he walks four in both games, so that kind of stinks. So I can see why
they're like, all right, well, wait a second. It's not like he's just burning through all these guys
at AAA. So I get it, but at the same time, it sucks because instead we got to watch dudes
that don't belong at the major league level. As far as tonight's game goes, Michael McGreevy on the
mount against lefty, Andrew Abbott. He's one-on-one with a 1.69 ERA and three starts.
against the Cardinals this year, so it will not be easy.
I have not seen anything yet on any news about Wilson Contreras and whether or not he'll be in the lineup tonight,
if you remember last night, left at a really inopportune time because the Cardinals had the bases loaded,
and Wilson Contreras's spot in the order was coming up.
Burleson got hit by the pitch, which sucked because you'd rather see him swinging the bat instead of getting plunked.
And instead of Wilson Contreras coming up, Nolan Gorman came up.
We know he's been struggling again, hits into a ground out, and inning is over.
So we'll see if Wilson can come back with the lefty on the mound tonight.
Congratulations to Brendan Donovan.
Also named Monday as the Cardinals nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by MLB.
So good job to you, Brendan Donovan.
Hopefully tonight with McGreevy on the mound, usually the Cardinals played better.
They win more games than they lose when McGreevy is on the mound.
So hopefully we'll get a chance to see a W tonight at Bush Stadium.
If it's like it was last night, plenty of seats will still be available.
So if you get a chance, make it on down to the ballpark.
