Starting point is 00:00:00 Another sluggish start for Matthew Liberator, dooms the Cardinals, whose pitching staff has just been beaten up recently. This is Locked on Cardinals. You are Locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Hafer and on today's show,
Starting point is 00:00:27 we are going to get you up to date on how things are shaping up for the minor league affiliates. We'll go through the top, what do we got? Top three levels that we'll talk about today. We're going to do Memphis, Springfield, and Peoria. We're going to break down the game from Monday against the Guardians. But our point of emphasis to start the show today is going to be about the pitching or lack thereof from the Cardinals over really the last 19 innings. It's been pretty rough. You know, things were going well late into the game on Saturday. But that's when Matt Sphonson, unfortunately got abused and that took place. And the socks put up five in the ninth inning.
Starting point is 00:01:07 They go on to win that one seven to one. Okay, you know, one bad inning. We'll see what happens. Sunday, it was a different type of agonizing defeat. It was a long, slow, Andre Palante death, who gave up two in the first, one in the second, four in the fourth, and what ended up being a nine to three loss, Monday night. new team, Cleveland Guardians, new series, same issues.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Cardinals fall behind early, got a claw back to get into it. And similar to Palante, Libby was going deep into counts, lots of pitches, it was slow, it was boring. And eventually putting people on base became his undoing. When the Guardians played at three in the fourth inning, and it all started with the leadoff walks, from two Jose Ramirez and Reese Hoskitz. Back-to-back walks to start the inning. Not good. Not ideal. Obviously, that's a problem. We know it is.
Starting point is 00:02:13 You don't have to have me continuously reiterate to you how bad a lead-off walk is or letting the lead-off guy on in general. If you hit a guy with the ball as well, hit by pitch, isn't any better? And then it goes single to David Fry. Now you're in some real trouble. Bases are loaded. Nobody out. Daniel Schneeman comes to the play.
Starting point is 00:02:36 At least it's a lefty, lefty matchup. You're looking for the ground ball to turn to and help you get out of this mess. He gets the ground ball. The problem is it's a ground ball with eyes, as they call him. And it goes right in between this little crack between Alec Berlinson at first base and J.J. Weatherholt at second.
Starting point is 00:02:56 base. Scores two runs. Really annoying, but that's what happens. That's what happens when you put people on over and over again. It bit Palante on Sunday. His was more with the hit batters and it bites Libby and the talks on Monday. Then after the two runs single,
Starting point is 00:03:22 the inning continues because there's still nobody out. He does get Brito to fly to shallow left. Guardians decide not to run on Nathan Church's arm in left field, which was probably a good idea. It's a little bit shallow. We know Church's got a gun out there in left field for a left arm. So they don't run on them. So it remains first and third.
Starting point is 00:03:46 And one out. One out. Hi, hey, everybody, one out. That's all you got to do. You hold your finger up. and you remind everybody that there's one out. I played organized baseball for 20-some-odd years. You always do that.
Starting point is 00:04:07 I only ever had it one time where one of my outfielder's got confused about how many outs there were, and that's because the umpire said it wrong, and I had to re-correct it, and it screwed things up. So I blame the ump for that one. It's kind of a big game when it happened to, which is unfortunate. Um, but one out, definitely one out, but apparently nobody reminded Nathan Church of that because he gets another fly ball, but clearly thought it was the last out of the inning and the runner tags him third and jogs home with the free run to make it four to one. Now, it probably was deep enough that that run was going to score anyway.
Starting point is 00:04:51 All right. It's not that it was at the warning track or anything, but. It's just such a bad look. Like how much hell did we give Pete Crow Armstrong last year from the Cubs? Thought he had the third out when he made a running catch in center field. Wasn't a runner scored from second base. We were all over that, right? Hi, Nathan Church.
Starting point is 00:05:18 That's not good. It's a bad luck that a professional baseball player cannot count a three. And he doesn't notice the multiple spots around the stadium that lists the score and the inning and the outs and the count and all the crap that's going on in a game these days. How many challenges you got left? What's the pitch count? What's the Vila? Like there's stuff everywhere in the ballpark. And at no point did he see that it was only one out.
Starting point is 00:05:52 So it's just dumb. it's not paying attention to detail. And when you're a team like the Cardinals, you can't give away runs. You're not good enough to just give away runs. You know that. They know that. Ali said after the game,
Starting point is 00:06:09 he doesn't need to even talk to church about the play. He knows he screwed up. He knows it's embarrassing. And he knows that this team being as young as it is, they're going to make mental and physical mistakes. It's just going to happen. And it's something that, coming into this season during the off season.
Starting point is 00:06:27 It's something that we kind of prepared everybody for. It was like, look, they're going to screw some stuff up. It's going to happen. That's what happens when you have a really young roster. Youngest starting roster in the big leagues. These things are going to happen. You hope that you can learn from it and you move forward. And, you know, we're still in April.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Wait until this crap is happening in June to some of these guys. And you're really going to get p-oed. You know, I thought Ollie handled it pretty well in the postgame press conference. So he was pretty relaxed about it. But obviously, you know, that bothers you as a manager. Like, I do you not know how many else there are. Anyway, when the season began, we all knew what to expect from this team. You know, we were hoping that it was going to be fun, which for the most part, it has been.
Starting point is 00:07:15 There was going to be a different kind of energy going on with the team, which it has been. But there's going to be a lot of mistakes. and it's going to be stuff that makes you want to scream and just makes you want to break something. Part of the process of a rebuild. And you just hope that when these things happen, that they become better ballplayers because of it, sooner rather than later,
Starting point is 00:07:37 you would hope that that doesn't ever happen again to Nathan Church. So we'll see. Libby was done after five innings. Through 105 pitches in just five innings. You don't need to be Isaac Newton to realize that 105 and 5 is not efficient. but it was only 4 to 1 when he left the game. It's not like he left them in this massive hole that they can't get out of. And unfortunately, the bullpen didn't do him any favors.
Starting point is 00:08:05 They didn't help out much at all after Libby accident. Justin Brule gets in the game. He's been Justin Brutal. First two guys, he gets those guys, no problem. We're like, this is going to be an easy inning for him. And then there's a two-out walk. So the number eight head. hitter. Like these friggin' walks are like, what are you doing? It's the number eight hitter.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Make him beat you. It's inexcusable. And then he gives up the tater to the number nine hitter. Now we're looking at six to one. We thought it was going to be a quick inning. You're going to take that momentum and get back into it. And instead, a two-out walk, two-out two-out-two run, Homer. And now you're climbing up a major hill to get back into this thing. And then at the eighth inning, when it's six to two, we get the return to a run. of Brian Fernandez. And that didn't go very well. You know, here's a guy that had this solid season in 2024.
Starting point is 00:09:00 He was awful in 2025. Strong start at Memphis where he made six appearances. And people were saying, yeah, that's really good for Memphis. What the hell else is he supposed to pitch? Like, he can only go up against the competition that he's at. Like, I always, I laugh at that. I'm like, what do you mean? Well, he's good at Memphis.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Well, where else do you want him to throw? row that's going to prove to you that he deserves another chance. They bring him up, six appearances in Memphis. No runs. But all of that shine had disappeared quickly when he came in for Gordon Grecefa, who you guessed it, walked the lead off at her. Fernandez comes in, gives up a single de Brito, gets the fly out to Walker for the second out,
Starting point is 00:09:49 and then cue up the circus music. It was one of those dumb. plays where, you know, like Little League crap was happening, one of the patented swinging bunts that apparently the rest of the league has mastered against the Cardinals, executed to perfection by the opposing hitters. Honestly, I don't know if this happens to everyone else as much as it happens to the Cardinals, but it feels like it happens two, three times a game where a full swing will go like 22 feet, perfect bun style type of play.
Starting point is 00:10:23 So Fernandez goes over there in Fields. And he's got no play at first base. Smart thing. He eats it. He doesn't throw it. But the runner rounding third went a little too far. Rounded it a little too hard. Dead is a doorknail at third base.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Had Gorman right behind him like ball, give it to me. And Fernandez sails it down the left field line. Run scores. Runners go to second and third. Next batter is Stephen Kwan. He singles. Two more run scores. or 9 to 2 at this point.
Starting point is 00:11:00 And that as they say, is that. That was the end of the pitching issues. Last 19 innings, the Cardinals have pitched. They've allowed 23 runs. That's terrible. I don't care who you got on the offensive side of things. You can have, you know, what was it, the Yankees last year that led the league and runs? You could have the old 80s, early 90s,
Starting point is 00:11:25 Oklahoma days with all their bashers. Like you could have all these guys and you weren't winning when your pitching stats are like that. You're just not. We're going to jump over to the offense next with our three stars of the game. I walker, I wonder who will be number one. Find out next on Lockdown Cardinals. Starting point is 00:13:18 Now, I know you are not going to believe this, guys, and gals. But our number one star of the game is a guy by the name of Jordan Walker. Shocker, right? Shocker. Hit his league leading eighth home run of the season in the sixth inning. But pretty usual, nobody was on base when he was up. So it's another solo shot for number 18 for Air Jordan. We really do need to get him a good nickname, though. Like the bobblehead behind me says Jordan Skywalker.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Is Skywalker okay? But I feel like that one was taken too. Like I feel like basketball players took all the names. But anyway, we'll work on that. But the home run, Solo Blast made it 6 to 2 at the time, later in the game with the score 9 to 2. This was really impressive. People were, I think, more impressed with this play than the home run.
Starting point is 00:14:15 So late in the game, hits a seemingly harmless ground ball over to the left side of the end field. Jose Ramirez over there, future Hall of Famer for the Guardians, and picks it up, throws the first, and Jordan Walker beats it. beats out the throat of first base. We praise him for his hustle in a spot like this. You know, this is late in the game. You're down a ton. Some guys might just loaf to first.
Starting point is 00:14:45 I hate to call Nolan Aronado out, but you saw it a lot from him in situations like this where, like, he just lightly jogs down over to first base. You know, he's like, yeah, whatever. Although I do owe Nolan Aronado apology. I was, you know, last episode, I was talking about his lack of power. And what does he do Monday?
Starting point is 00:15:03 It goes out and hits two home reds. So I'll eat the crow. I'll eat the crow there. But, you know, normally, and it's just he's the one that comes to mind when I remember seeing him run down to first. Sometimes you're just like, dude, is he even trying to get there? Anyway, but players, veterans will accept their fate. But not Jordan Walker. Still got a lot to prove in this game.
Starting point is 00:15:26 And you got to marvel at the speed he's showing when he, isn't jogging around the bases after a home run. Now in the 90th percentile in sprint speed this year, he was 94 earlier, down to 90 now. But still, you got that big body and those long legs. He's like a tight end out there, busting it down the line. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:46 Ali showed some appreciation for that hustle after the game, talked about it and was like, yeah, I mean, this is who he is and who he's always been. And he's having a good time playing the game right now. And, you know, there's keep it up now it wasn't all roses it wasn't a perfect night for jordan walker by any means
Starting point is 00:16:05 he did have a big strike hit in that first inning when the team squandered a golden opportunity to really do some damage against the starter for cleveland and gavin williams first three batters of the game hit singles and with two on and nobody out jordan gets caught looking at the plate and it wasn't like some borderline pitch either like heater right over the heart of the plate lower in the zone but clearly he was looking for something else. So he goes down looking and then Gorman goes down swinging on three straight pitches. And then there's a walk, but then Nathan Church flies out, ends the threat. So those are the opportunities that you really got to take advantage,
Starting point is 00:16:44 especially against a good pitcher like Gavin Williams, man. He's, he's good. Walker now, though, speaking of good, has home runs in three consecutive games. And in his last 28 at bats, he's got six stingers. his eight home runs over the team's first 16 games matches the early season marks of some pretty big names, Scott Rowland, Mark McGuire, and Stan Musial. He's been a one-man wrecking crew, but that's also the problem. He's the only one doing much these days.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Other people got to contribute. Now, our second start of the game goes to Alec Berluson, who was the only other person besides Walker who had multiple hits in this one, was two for five with an RB, I single that he got in that first inning, doubled in the ninth, and just missed hitting a home running that seventh inning. He just got underneath it. Ball died at the wall. Center fielder had to make a nice, like, basket catch because he almost collided with the right fielder. But Burley had two hits on Sunday against Boston as well. Two more hits on Monday against Cleveland. And you're hoping that this is the start of him getting going back again
Starting point is 00:17:53 where the, you know, the burly that we're used to, the Silver Slugger type of Burley. batting average up to a more respectable 271 at this point. My third star of the game, I want to show some love to Mason win on this one. He was back in this lineup, missed the last two games after getting plunked in that left knee area on Friday night. He got on base in all four of his played appearances on Monday, three times by walk, once on a double the left in the sixth inning, 108 off the bat, which you love to see for Mason win. The batting average still not where you want it, 175, but judging by Monday nights, performance. and his line with the off walks and being on base four times, he's seeing the ball well.
Starting point is 00:18:34 And when that happens, as soon as that domino falls, normally you're going to start seeing more solid contact like he did on the double, and eventually more hits are going to start falling. He's going to start plugging gaps, ripping a couple down the line. He's probably going to get a dinger here soon where he'll sneak one over the wall and left. So look forward to Mason when getting hot. I hope that's what happens. that I predicted it, that he does end up doing well and not getting, you know,
Starting point is 00:19:01 hit in the toe or something stupid happened to the, to his leg area yet again. Cardinals finished a dismal one for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 guys on base in this particular game on Monday. Sunday, they were one for four with Risp and left five. Saturday, O for four, left eight Friday in a game that they won, mind you, they were two for 13 and stranded 12. That's four for their last 31. with runners in scoring position for a whopping 129 batting average
Starting point is 00:19:32 and 35 runners have been left on base. That is terrible. They know it's terrible. They don't need us to point it out that this is happening. They know what's happening. They got to figure out ways to get these dudes in. Like the Cardinals have the sixth worst batting average with runners in scoring position in baseball at 218.
Starting point is 00:19:55 The worst of the bunch, Victor Scott, Joe El Pozo, Nathan Church, Pedro Pahas, Mason Wynn, and Ramon Urias, all hitting under 200 with Rudders in scoring position. Hell, Jordan Walker, as hot as he has been, is only hitting 235 when people are on base. He's doing a lot of this damage when nobody's on. Burley is carrying this squad. He's at a 421 clip with runners in scoring position, followed by Gorman at 2.1. 86 and then it goes 250 and down. You know, we knew that there would be some offensive challenges,
Starting point is 00:20:31 but this recent trend had been really frustrating to watch. Just a small army left out there on the bases. And the really sad part is that we're wasting this historic streak by Jordan Walker. Seven home runs in his last nine games and the team is four and five. It's like the Mark McGuire days all over again. Remember when he first came to St. Louis? and yeah, he's hitting dingers, but they're not winning. Like it was, it was like, yay, look at Mark.
Starting point is 00:21:01 But look at the score at the end of the game. Like, we're still not going anywhere. And unless I did the math wrong, six of the seven home runs that he has hit in these last nine games, there are solo shots. The only one that had people on was the Grand Slam in Detroit. That was it. If I'm wrong, pointed out, let me know in the comments section. But I think that's right.
Starting point is 00:21:22 they've all been solo shots except for that grand slam. That's wild stuff. That's wild. Do we need to shuffle the batting order again? Do we need to move Walker up to where Yvonne Herrera is so we can bat in front of Burley and do more damage? I know he's killing it in the cleanup spot, but we're not winning.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Anyway, it's frustrating. I know. Let's check in on the minor league guys next. I will do that. We'll go through. Memphis, Springfield, Peoria. Next on Locked on Cardinals. If you've ever opened your bank account and thought,

Thanks again for making Lockdown, Cardinals, your first listen of the day. Thank you for making locked on the number one sports podcast network. All right, Memphis Redbirds finished last week with a 13 to 4 thumping at the hands of Charlotte. They split that series. with them 3-3. They're still in first place at 11 and 4. They're going to be back home this week against Gwynette. So if you're in the Memphis area, go check them out. They're doing a lot of hitting. Your top three batting average leaders for the team, Brian Torres, 371, Blaze Jordan
Starting point is 00:23:45 in 354, and then Cesar Prieto is at 326, your top home run guys. You got Jimmy Crooks and Blaze Jordan tied at the top with four. Prieto is second with three RBI leaders. It's Crooks and Joshua Baez, who's starting to heat up a little bit. He's got a couple dingers. He's also got 10 RBIs, which is tied with crooks at the top for the team. Blaze Jordan comes in at second with eight. And you're still my base leaders. You've got there he is again.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Joshua Baez. Colton Ledbetter also win there. And Torres, they're all tied with three apiece to lead the team. I was looking up at strikeouts, too. And Colton Ledbetter is striking out a ton right now. They got to fix that, man. That swings too pretty to be striking out them. Pitching leaders at Memphis, you got Hunter Dobbins and Richard Fitz tied with two wins,
Starting point is 00:24:33 although we got the bad news on Richard Fitz. If you didn't see it on Monday, he has gone to the IL with a lat strain, and that sucks. Because although, you know, every injury is different with different people, lat strains, at least the ones I have seen over the years, they tend to take a bit of time to come back from. So that it really sucks because as the schedule picks up, up more, you know the Cardinals we're going to want to start thinking about how they're going to incorporate Richard Fitz and Hunter Dobbins into the major league rotation and roster.
Starting point is 00:25:10 And now that he's out, who knows? So, you know, Spotlight now goes to Hunter Dobbins. And then I guess Quinn Matthews would be next, but he hasn't looked all that great so far this year. Fitz was tops in the ERA for the team at 1.76 before the injury. that's followed by Bruce Zimmerman, who's a name to watch. He was sporting an ERA of three, but leads the club with 21 strikeouts and 15 innings. I do not believe he is on the 40 man, so a move would have to be made there. But with Cade Winquist coming back, he's not on the 40 man.
Starting point is 00:25:49 He's going to be, he's at Memphis now. And with them DFAing Jared Schuster, that means there's an open spot on the 40 man, I believe. I think they're at 39. So we'll see what Hyde and Blumen Company decided to do with that one spot. So keep an eye out for that. Springfield, four and five on the season. So far, they've lost five in a row after starting the year four and oh.
Starting point is 00:26:14 They're in Wichitaa this week. Your offensive leaders, Jeremy Revis at the top hit in 33. Dakota Harris leads and home runs with three, two of those are grand slams. He is tied with John John Gastar with 11 RBIs for the team lead. And then Miguel, You get though leads and stolen bases. He's got four. Pitching wise, four-way tie for wins with one,
Starting point is 00:26:37 because they've only won four games. Brandon Davis leads in strikeups. He's got 15 and eight innings. A qualified ERA leader is Mason Molina at 4.50. But yeah, they only got nine games under their belt so far. So, you know, that'll, we'll see other names by the time we do this next week. And then your Peoria Chiefs are three and six.
Starting point is 00:26:57 They've lost three in a row. They're in Wisconsin this. week. Your batting average leader is Rainiel Rodriguez at 310. He's also in a three-way tie for the home run lead on the team with two along with Ty Pete and Yellow in Carnacione. Pete leads in RBI's. He's got eight, Juan Ben-Cho, top on the team and stolen bases. He's got six already this year and just nine games that they've played. And I don't even know if he's played in all nine. So Juan Ben-cho Fevery right now for the Peoria Chiefs. Three-way tie for wins when it comes to the pitching. Jack Finley, Zach Showalter, Nolan Sparks, each got one.
Starting point is 00:27:32 Your strikeout leader is Tanner Franklin, if you've been keeping up with what Tanner Franklin's been doing, 16 strikeouts and six and two-thirds innings. I don't know how long he's going to be down there at Peoria with numbers like that. Qualified ERA leader, you've got Joyker Fuhardo. I was saying that Yoheeker Fuhardo this whole time. Apparently that's wrong. It's either Yoiker or Joyker Fuhardo. either way, the numbers speak for themselves.
Starting point is 00:28:01 2.35 ERA over 7 and 2 thirds innings. Following the loss on Monday, the Cardinals are now back at the 500 mark at 8 and 8. The NL Central now's got the Pirates in first at 10 and 6 after dismantling the Nationals, 16 to 5. Paul Skeen's got the win. Brandon Lough hit his 6th home run. He drove in five in this game. The Reds and Brewers were both off on Monday and the Cubs got thrashed by the Phillies 13 to 7.
Starting point is 00:28:24 They fall below 500 at 7 and 8. after Friday's win for the Cardinals, I got a little excited. I got a little excited, you guys. And, you know, eight and five, I was excited. They were tied for the top in the Central, and I posted. I'm like, aren't we having fun? Woo-hoo, go us. And three games and three losses later, I'm here to apologize about getting so excited.
Starting point is 00:28:51 I am quite humbled now. I promise never to get overly excited about anything again this season. There, I said it. I apologize. Now can we have our fun, youthful and exciting team back, please? I miss that because I've not enjoyed watching the last two games for sure. And, of course, watching the end of the game on Saturday was rough as well, watching, you know, Sphanson get his brains beat in.
Starting point is 00:29:21 So I had not had a lot of fun over the last couple of games. And it's just it's not fun baseball. Other than a Jordan Walker at bat, everything else has been really, really dull. And that's not what the start of this season was like. So I want to get back to that. Game two on Tuesday, you got Michael McGreevy against Joey Cantillo. McGreevy's gone six innings in two of his first three starts. But people are saying you've got to be weary that his stuff hasn't been really as good as the numbers might say.
Starting point is 00:29:49 and the stats might be a little misleading. So fingers crossed that he doesn't get, you know, they don't figure him out and he starts getting hit. But we'll find out on Tuesday. Hopefully more people show up for the game. Announced attendance for Tuesday or for Monday was a putrid 17,000 and change. Like it looked like a game that had been like there was a rain delay for three hours and fans had to leave and that they were playing at like midnight.
Starting point is 00:30:16 there was no energy in the crowd and there was not much on the field either. I hope that's not the norm moving forward. I hope things pick up again because I feel that this team is much more exciting than what we were getting last year as far as an overall product. Just the last couple games, been a little rough. But yeah, that was a bad looking crowd on Monday night. Also, shout out to those of you who voted for Jordan Walker's card on MLB the show. He's now supercharged, which he very much deserved.
Starting point is 00:30:44 And in fact, I'm going to go go play that here in just a moment. So thanks for making Locked on Cardinals for first listen every day.
