It wasn't a sweep, but the Cardinals stood toe to toe, mono e mono with the best of the best,
and take a series from the mighty LA Dodgers.
This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are Locked on Cardinals, your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network,
your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Hafford.
And today's episode is brought to you by Fandle.
Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get it 100.
$150 in bonus bets.
If your first bet wins, head to fandul.com to get started.
On today's show, we'll wrap up the weekend that was with the Dodgers in town.
Clearly, things went well because I got the ugly shirt on.
And I did not wash it.
No, it needs to be washed, though.
But I did not wash it.
I didn't want to, you know, I didn't want to mess with the mojo.
Plus, we'll get the latest ongoings within the NL Central.
But we're going to start with Sunday's matchup.
against the Dodgers where the Cardinals had a chance to actually sweep L.A.
That's right.
The St. Louis Cardinals in a year where they are retooling, rebuilding, whatever you want to call it,
not spending money, not paying a lot of veterans, a veteran hefty squad.
They're not paying them.
Instead, they're going to rely on their youth and their coaching to get them through.
We're winners of six in a row coming into Sunday had already wrapped up the series with the win on Saturday.
and had Dustin May on the bump to face one of his former teams,
and it was May the third,
which was something that the post-dispatch staff pointed out
was something that had not happened in 46 years,
where a player whose first or last name and uniform number
matched the date that he was playing.
Kind of a crazy stat, right?
46 years, Lee Mae was the last one.
And I don't know if he was with the Pirates at the time that he did it.
I just remember that baseball card.
at one point, Lee May.
But crazy stats.
So also signs pointed to, like, greatness, amazing things are probably going to have them for
the Cardinals on Sunday.
Unfortunately, nobody told L.A. starter Justin Robleski, who played the spoiler in this
particular game, six shutout innings as the Dodgers went on to win by a score of four
to one.
And this is nothing to hang your head about, although Robleski is not what I would consider a household
name yet, unless you're like big time into fantasy.
baseball or you're a Dodgers fan.
You probably aren't all that familiar with him yet,
but he's been on quite a tear since getting moved to the rotation.
He, his first appearance of the year was in relief out of the bullpen and he gave up three
runs in four innings.
And he's had five starts since and the Dodgers are five and no in those games.
He's gotten a win in all five of those games.
He's giving up just two earned runs in his last 32 winnings pitched and his ERA is at 1.25 for
the year.
All right.
He's doing something right.
The dude is legit, even though he's not that prototypical strikeout guy that we think about
when we hear about people dominating in our sport today.
And the guys that usually put up the zero is usually guys who were throwing 100, 101,
got nasty breaking stuff.
And that's not really his game.
You know, we didn't strike out a single Cardinals batter.
But everything he seemed to do ended up working.
And when the Cardinals would hit the ball and they hit a lot of the balls hard,
on Sunday right at someone, like right at someone every time. And as one of my idols, Fred Durst
from Limp biscuit would say, it's just one of those days. You know, anytime they started to get
something cooking, it would fizzle out for the Cardinals. J.J. leads off with the single in the
first. He raced on a double play. You get two singles in the second inning. But a ground out and
a caught stealing erases those. Cardinals made three outs in the third inning. And each one,
the exit velo off the bat was over 100 miles per hour.
Pahas, Urias,
Walker, all three of them.
Hit awfully hard.
Nothing, nothing to show for it.
Ops.
Fourth inning, Burley and Mason line out at 190 miles per hour.
For mean and church, each had singles on bat at balls under 90.
Only for Pahas to line out again at 99 miles per hour.
Fifth inning, JJ.
out on a 99.5 mile per hour fly out. Yvonne Herrera 108.5 ground out. Again, Fred
Durst, one of those days. And baseball happens like that. And you just got to kind of,
you shrug your shoulders. You go, all right, you know, because there's moments where the,
the weak stuff will find grass. You know, we saw a couple of hits in that Pittsburgh series for
the Cardinals that weren't hit hard at all. And you get on base when, when those happened, but you hit the ball
hard and they're outs, you know, the swinging buntz become hits. It all usually evens out in the end,
but Cardinals took their hacks. They hit the ball hard a lot in the game on Sunday and had nothing to
show for it. And that's just baseball. You know, the lone run that they did get came in that eighth inning
when Burley hit one under 80 miles per hour. It didn't hit it hard, but it found grass in center
field and scored Walker, who was running on the pitch from first base. Like, Walker's wheels continue
to open up eyes around the league. Like, I went to his baseball savon page.
still sitting in the 92nd percentile of sprint speed at 6-6-250.
On the other side, Dustin May had himself a nice quality start.
It's not that Dustin May pitched back.
Like that was not the case.
Six innings, he allows three runs, seven hits, two walks, three strikeouts.
Not the most flattering line, but they call it a quality start for a reason.
It's not called an amazing start.
It's a quality start.
kept this team in the game and within striking distance in case the baseball gods were feeling more generous later on in the game with some of these missiles that the cardinals were hitting.
But alas, they were not.
There was a common theme with all three RBI hits for the Dodgers against Dustin May.
After a single and a walk in the second, it was Andy Pahas, who ripped a one out hanging breaking ball to make it one to nothing.
Hassan Kim followed with a single to right on a breaking ball.
And it was two to nothing.
Then in the fifth inning, Freddie Freeman laced, you guessed it, a breaking ball that hung right over the heart of the plate for an RBI single to make it three nothing.
All three RBI hits coming on breaking balls.
I'm sure that's something that Dustin May will look at and it'll be something that he's like,
because you know with breaking balls, it's all location.
If you get it down in the zone, usually you can induce something that's not hit all that hard.
You leave hangers up in the zone on any sort of breaking ball where it's a curb ball, sweeper, whatever it may be.
and it has a chance to really get punished.
And they got punished three different times for three RBIs.
Final run for the Dodgers came against Jared Schuster in the ninth inning who came in.
And it wasn't his fault.
You know, he pitched two innings.
And, you know, he was something that was really needed, you know,
to eat those final innings.
But after Andy Pa has reached on a Mason win error, he ends up stealing second base and scores on a hit by Alex
call against the drawn-in infield.
You know, it finds a hole there between short and third.
So a loss, yes.
Do we have to be happy about it?
No.
But the overall series, I think, was a win for the Cardinals,
not only just because they took two of three,
which, you know, technically is a win,
but just how everything went,
like how the vibes were around the stadium,
how the games were played.
It was a fun series.
You know, when you.
have a team like the Dodgers come to town who have won two World Series in a row.
And they've got all this star power.
And you've got a young team that couldn't wait to get a crack at it.
And be like, look, we're testing ourselves here, you know.
Where are we on this list?
Nobody's talking about us.
Nobody expects us to win.
But we're going to go out and have fun.
You know, Alec Lurlinson said something about that in the locker room or in the clubhouse
after the game.
when he was talking to reporters.
He was like, you know, he's like,
I don't want this to come off wrong.
Being being very careful of how he said it.
And we don't care.
You know,
we don't come to the ballpark expecting to lose or expecting to win.
We're just going out there and we're going to play.
We're going to do the things we do well and we're going to go have fun.
We're going to compete.
But we don't care.
Like we're not beating ourselves up up about losses.
You know,
and wins.
We love them,
but we're not going to take them too seriously,
really,
is what he's trying to say.
like, you know, a very even keel, but they're having a good time.
They're enjoying life the way that things are going for this team right now, as they should.
But a loss, yeah, but a series win.
So we're going to talk about some of the highlights of the series overall,
including stuff about Alec Burleson and Jordan Walker and company.
So we'll get into that all coming up next on Locktown Cardinals.
The NBA playoff are here in every possession matters.
If you're looking to get even closer to the action,
Fandle's got a great offer for you to get started.
right now new customers can bet just $5 again, $150 in bonus bets.
If your first bet wins, that's right.
Turn five bucks into 150 in bonus bets just for getting started.
Fandle is, I'm telling you, and it's weird for St. Louis because we don't have an NBA team.
You used to have the Hawk, don't have them.
But if you find a team that you enjoy watching play and then you combine that with the stuff that goes on at Fandall,
it really makes the NBA playoffs a whole lot more fun.
Because everything you need, it's right there in one place.
You can check the stats, the trends, the matchups,
before you decide on what picks you want to make,
which makes the whole experience, just feel a lot more informed.
You're not just, you know, throwing darts and just guessing.
Like, no, the information is there for you to help you make better choices.
So whether you're looking at player props or just following your favorite stars,
it adds another level of excitement to the game.
Super easy to navigate, like for tonight's games, Monday's games.
The next host of the 76ers in Game 1 in the East.
New York seven and a half point favorites.
The Spurs hosting Minnesota, Spurs are 13 and a half point favorites.
I've been talking up the spurs going into the playoffs.
This is like this is the team that I think is just going to be almost impossible to beat
in a seven game series.
But that first game with the Sixers, like give me, give me the Knicks all day at seven
and a half points.
And my buddy says, bet against the Lakers.
He's a Lakers fans.
Don't take them.
They're not that good.
So, you know, heed his warning.
But you can do whatever you need to do.
head to fandle.com today. Get started. Fandle. Play your game. Thanks for making Locked on Cardinals.

You can find me in the club.
That's where we beat.
No, I'm not a rapper.
I'm not good.
Let's relive some of the top things that we saw in the series,
shall we?
Because it was a fun series.
It was a strong one for the Cardinals all around,
riding high after the four-game sweep in Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals took it to the Dodgers on Friday night to get that 7 to 2 win behind Matthew Libertor's solid start.
And finally, it gets his first win of the season.
He's pitched well enough to win a few of them, but he's only got one so far.
But finally, in that W column.
The Cardinals got RBIs from four different people in that one.
But it was the Jordan Walker show that was the most impressive thing about Friday.
Four for four, two ribbies, including two doubles, a stolen bays.
He kicked the snot out of me in fantasy baseball this.
week, which thanks a lot, Jordan. But it's worth it when the real club is winning ball games, right?
For the weekend, Walker goes six for 11. That's a 545 batting average. As the Dinger, four
ribbies, four runs scored, a walk, a stolen base. He does not strike out once against the Dodgers.
Let me repeat that. He did not strike out in this series against the Dodgers. His overall line for the
year, he's now at 307, 10 home runs, 27 ribbies, 27 runs scored, six stolen bases. He's got to
a 373 on base percentage, 591 slug and a 964 OPS. So how does he rank in the National
League with all those categories you ask? Well, I'm glad you asked because I have that information
for you. He's now top 15 of batting average, tied for second and dingers, tied for fourth
and ribbyes, tied for third and runs, tied for seventh stolen bases, top 20 in OBP,
tied for third and slugging and fourth in OPS. Ladies and gentlemen, Jordan Walker is
having an MVP caliber start to the season. Is he going to win this?
Probably not. Probably not. There are bigger names. There are bigger teams that are going to get all the headlines.
And that's okay. That's okay. But we know here at Locked-on Cardinals how good Jordan Walker has been so far. And I think that's all that matters.
You know, the best part, at least in my opinion, is since that, that crazy stretch of games where he was hitting home runs at an unbelievable clip.
Remember that? Like it was crazy. How many home runs he was hit?
What's been awesome is the way that he has been able to bounce back after he was struggling there for a little bit.
Remember?
Like things started to go south.
And everybody's like, uh-oh.
Uh-oh.
Is the real Jordan Walker here?
What has happened?
He cooled off and then he got going again.
And it's hitting 3.93 over his last seven games.
And I, you know, everyday hours will remember this.
My biggest question about Jordan was, could he do this consistently?
And I'm not talking about the home runs because that was silly.
That was cuckoo bananas.
That's not normal.
But the productivity in general was it something that he could hang on to.
And when things did start to get tough, which they always do eventually, it's a roller coaster.
You know how it is.
There's a lot of ups and downs.
And as Ozzy says, you want to have more ups than you do downs.
But when things started to go down for Jordan, the team didn't move them out of the cleanup spot.
They didn't, you know, give him a couple days off.
or anything. They were like, no, man, you figure it out. This is what being in a major league ball
player is all about. And he responded with flying colors. Test passed, stamp of approval,
loving every second of it. It's been awesome. It's been a lot of fun. Next guy I want to highlight.
Alec Berluson also had a very nice series after busting out of his recent slump in Pittsburgh.
He was one for three with his fifth home run of the season, scored twice on Friday. Saturday,
one for three with an RBI to get the scoring going.
And then on Sunday, he had the lone RBI in the 8th, 3 for 10 for the series,
three RBIs, a home run, three runs scored.
On the season, Burley is now up to 279 batting average-wise with five home runs and
28 RBIs.
That RBI total leads the team and is tied for third in the National League.
He also has 24 RBIs with runners in scoring position.
What is something that we have complained about as Cardinals fans over the years?
it was, hey, this is great, but when we need you to, you know, come through in the clutch,
it seems like people kept falling short recently.
Well, that's not the problem with Alec Berlson right now.
Not a problem at all.
24 revenues with runners in scoring position, type of first in the NL,
and he's hitting 381 with runners in scoring position,
which is 10th best in the National League.
Mason went.
Mason went also had a solid series.
Five for 11.
Nathan Church was 4 for 12.
Quiet weekend for J.J. Weatherholt at the dish after his mega series against Pittsburgh, probably a little exhausted.
So it was all right. He and Nolan Gorman only had two hits combined in the series.
But as you see, when it's a team effort, team effort shows that, you know, other people have to step up when other people cool off.
That's how it works. And that's what the Cardinals were able to do. Pitching wise, Libby, very strong on Friday.
Michael McGreevy, guys. I didn't get a chance to talk you to, you know, Saturday,
games, you know, we don't normally do a show. And Michael McGreevy, holy smokes, how awesome was he
on Saturday? Six shutout innings puts him an eighth place among National League starters and ERA
at 2.52. The whip is at 0.92. That's fourth best. His eight walks is the best in the National
League among qualified starters. And three of those came on Saturday. Once again, you look at
his baseball savab page and nothing stands out about any of the analytics he doesn't throw
super hard his breaking stuff isn't elite by any means but this is something that like us old
school people will tell you like maybe it doesn't show up like on those things but eyeball
test how is he in real life when it matters I don't care what his stat page says what is it
say when he's on the field. And in real life, my guy has been nothing less than outstanding.
Both he and Dustin may have four quality starts now, each which is tied third, most in the
National League. Shout out to the bullpen. Shout out to the bullpen. Not a lot to the bitch
about, is there this weekend? It was nice. Held the Dodgers didn't check on Friday. Had us all a little
nervous on Saturday. Not going to lie there. But held on. Right.
O'Brien.
This nail right here is because of you, Riley O'Brien,
because there is a nub now because I was like, oh my gosh.
But then on Sunday, just one earned a run against,
which was the Schuster unearned run because of the error.
So the Dodgers did not hit a single home run in this series.
Shohei Otani was 0 for 12.
The greatest player on the planet was invisible in this series.
And the Dodgers manages eight runs in three games,
not too shabby.
And you could say, well, the Dodgers aren't playing really well right now.
It's fine.
Not our fault.
Give credit where credit is due.
The Cardinals played them well, played them tough, beat them two out of three.
They also benefited the Cardinals pitching from the Cardinals defense.
Like double plays galore.
You know, they were a machine this weekend.
Nine of them turned against L.A. in the series, one on Friday and then four on both Saturday and Sunday.
Their team DRS right now, defense for runs safe, at 14, tied for fourth best in the league.
And then outs above average, they are at nine, which is tied for third best in the league.
So they are an elite defense.
And the guy leading the charge, if you had to guess, you would probably say Mason win, right?
Why wouldn't you?
He was a gold glover from last year.
That's not the case right now.
J.J. Weatherholt is at plus three, DRS and plus five outs above average.
Leads of the club in both.
J.J. Weatherholt, the rookie.
J.J. Weatherhole, the shortstop who moved to second base and is playing it full time in the pros for the first time.
He's the guy. Pretty awesome. Pretty awesome. So if JJ's not getting you with his bat, he's doing it with his glove, he's doing it with his attitude.
It's been a lot of fun to watch. It's hard to whine about anything at this point. So we're going to catch you up with the rest of the NL Central preview, the Milwaukee series.
Huge series coming up, man. We'll talk about it next on Lockdown Cardness.
If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, nothing wrong with that,
but you know how tough it is to go find that perfect treat without all the sugar.
You want to get that sweetness, but you don't want to pay for it later in the mid range of your gut, right?
That's where all the sugar and the calories go.
And that's why the confetti craze, five-hour energy shot is what you should try if you haven't already.
But it brings that nostalgic flavor back in a whole new way.
This is the classic tape.
that you remember, but it's got a tasty caffeine boost, and there's zero sugar.
There's no penalties for it.
It's a quick, easy way to satisfy that sweet craving while keeping things simple and on the go,
which is the way I like it.
As a busy person, you don't want huge energy drinks and carrying those around,
and then you drink them all, and then you got to go to the bathroom right away.
Like, you don't want to deal with all that.
Perfect alternative to eating sweets, no calories.
You don't have to worry about the calorie intake at all.
And it's convenient.
You know, they're small.
They're portable.
They're very easy.
It's quick to drink.
It's simple.
Like I said, busy lifestyles like mine, I don't need the big cans of crap.
I want five-hour energy drink.
Give it to me.
It's my go-to.
I want something sweet and I don't want to go overboard.
It's my go-to when I'm starting to feel a little, a little woozy.
Need some energy.
Five-hour energy.
It's the way to go.
It's the funfetti flavor.
It's back on five-hour energy.com or Amazon crack open.
Confetti craze five-hour energy shot today.
Thanks for making a lockdown cartels.
of the day. Thank you for making lockdown the number one sports podcast network.
Taking a look at the rest of the NL Central on Sunday,
Cubs take down Arizona, eight to four.
They sweep the diamond backs and have now won five straight and are all alone in first place
in the division at 22 and 12.
The Reds got swept in Pittsburgh after losing one to nothing on Sunday and have dropped
three straight to fall to 2014. And they are now tied with our Cardinals for second in the division.
Brewer's lost to Washington three to two, but they took two of three against them.
They're now third at 18 and 16.
And then you got the pirates who won those three games against Cincinnati and are now five and one against them this year and are 19 and 16 overall, which technically puts them in last place.
But it's hard to put somebody in last place when they're 19 and 16.
It's kudos to the entire division.
You know, they're all above 500 right now, which is very impressive this far into the season.
So good job, NL Central.
again, you don't have to like these other teams, but we are kind of, you know, brothers in arms here because the NL Central never gets credit for anything.
It's always the east or the west.
And we're just like that, that stepchild that gets no love.
And here we are, all of us above 500.
So that's a good thing.
That's a good thing to be excited about.
Now, the Brewers are a team, my opinion, they feel like a sleeping giant almost, waiting to a wake.
And it's not that they've been bad or anything, but they've been far from fully healthy so far this season.
They've had injuries to a lot of their offense.
Jackson Chorio's been out.
Andrew Vaughn, Christian Yalich.
They were also without Bryce Terang on Sunday.
He was out with an illness.
We don't wish bad things upon people.
But if Bryce Terang needs a couple of days to feel better, go ahead and sit this out.
Go ahead.
It's fine.
Vaughn is expected back today.
Truro is too far behind.
both had hand fractures that they were dealing with.
But Churio was actually supposed to be back for this series against the Cardinals,
a bit of unfortunate news for Milwaukee fans.
He fouled a ball off his ankle on Saturday, which required x-rays.
That was how bad it was.
They were negative, but they're probably going to give him a few more days before activating him.
So we'll see how quickly they decide to do it.
Again, another, hey, if you need a few more days, Jackson Churio, take them.
Relax.
You and Bryce kick back, relax for a little bit.
Hope you guys feel better on like four days.
William Contreras, Bryce to rank, Tyler Black, have been the hottest hitters for Milwaukee.
Contreras has nine ribbies in his last seven games and is batting 440.
Tyler Black, maybe another name that it's kind of what the Brewers have been doing the last few years,
where they find guys that nobody knows anything about, and then they just show up and they start tearing the cover off the ball.
And that's what Blacks do.
And he's hit 538 with seven ribbies in his last seven games.
he's a left-handed hitter, and he hits right.
He's very well.
So, you know, he's somebody that could be a menace.
He could be a menace.
And then you got to ring.
Who does Bryce to ring things hitting 471 in the same span?
He's very, very good.
One of those players that, you know, you wish you had him on your team
because he's just very, very impressive.
Pitching-wise, you know they traded Freddie Peralta to the Mets.
Brandon Woodruff is out right now.
He had shoulder inflammation, so he's done.
Jacob Mizrowski left his recent start,
with a cramp and his hamstring appears to be fine.
But that was something that they were worried about right away.
Quinn Priester, who was huge for them last season.
Remember, out of nowhere, Quinn Priester just starts rattling off win after when.
He is out right now with thoracic outlet syndrome.
He won't be available.
There are lefty relievers, Angel Zerpa and Jared Caning, or is it caning, are out.
So the depth in the bullpen clearly has taken a hit for sure.
Pitching probabilities for the series right now.
righty Chad Patrick starting tonight against Kyle Leahy.
Tuesday, Brandon Sprote, who was one of the names they got in that Paralta deal from New York.
We'll take on Andre Palante, who's been outstanding so far.
And then on Wednesday, TBD for Milwaukee, maybe it's some sort of open game for them.
But Matthew Leveritori is set to tow the rubber for the Cardinals.
We know what the Brewers like to do.
Same thing that the Cardinals like to do and have been doing this year.
solid fundamental baseball minimize the mistakes take advantage of your opponent's miscues it's what
they do it's what they do almost every game that i have watched with milwaukee involved
some kind of error leads to something that snowballs into like a three-run inning for them you
have to not do that and you can beat them that's all you got to do you got to take care of the
simple stuff you cannot kick the ball around you can't make mistakes you can't throw to the wrong
basis. It's all those little things that, you know, the cardals have done right so far this year.
Those are the things that Milwaukee pounces on. And it's something the cardals have been doing this
year, you know, and they, other teams make mistakes. What do they do? They take the extra base.
They take advantage of it. They turn what should be outs into runs. And that's exactly what
Milwaukee always does. So this defense has to be ready to rock, you know? That's the thing.
They're going to put the ball in play.
And you just got to take care of the simple plays, man.
That's really what it is.
There's nothing flashy about Milwaukee, all that firepower out of the lineup right now.
So they are still like, don't disrespect.
They are still three-time defending NL Central Division champions,
winners of four of the last five divisions with two-time defending NL manager of the year,
Pat Murphy at the helm.
They're still a very good ball club.
But they're beat up a little bit right now.
So this is a really good chance for the Cardinals to take advantage of that.
Cardinals are off to a six and four start in their 17 and 17 stretch,
which is Bravo.
When it started, I said, if we can stay at 500 over this stretch,
that would be a win for this team.
And right now they're six and four.
You love the fight you saw in Pittsburgh.
You love the confidence that they showed against L.A.
They were not intimidated by the Dodgers.
Now you've got to prove yourself against the team that has dominated this division
and has gone 23 and 16 against you over the last three seasons.
These are the guys who took your spot as the top dog in the division.
When things started going south for the Cardinals,
the Brewers rose to the occasion and have been in charge ever since.
I think it's time to show them who has the dog in them again.
First pitch 645 tonight in St. Louis.
