Starting point is 00:00:00 A memorable I-70 series ends with a dud, but goes to the Cardinals who still haven't lost the series in the month of May. Ugly shirt on, but shirts not required on today's episode of Locked-on Cardinals. You are Locked-on Cardinals, your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans, I'm Jady Haffron, and today's episode is brought to you by Fandall. Right now new customers can bet just $5 to get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins at Fandle.com to get started. On today's show, we're going to break down the series finale over the Kansas City Royals. I shouldn't say over them, but against the Kansas City Royals because the Cardinal didn't win the game. We've got the latest on Mason Wins injury that caused him to leave the game early on Sunday. Plus, got to show some love to our boys from Stephen F. Austin, who started a shirtless movement that took the city by storm tarps off went viral went national it was an insane thing and it was such a simple idea and it started so innocently and just grew and grew and grew so we'll get into that a little bit later as well but we're going to start with sunday's game where the cardinals were actually
Starting point is 00:01:22 going for the sweep against the royals their rivals after taking the first two games of this series and there wasn't a ton of offense in this one between the two teams throughout the weekend and that trend continued on Sunday with the Royals shut out the Cardinals two to nothing. Now, the teams only combined to score 17 runs in the three games series. Now, some people will say, hey, that's awesome baseball. You know, that's the kind of games like my father used to love to watch two to one ball games. He felt those were the best ones ever. I like a little more action than that.
Starting point is 00:01:52 But I got to give credit to the pitching staff for their efforts. Both sides pitched outstanding throughout the weekend. And even though the Cardinals took the loss on Sunday and Andre, Palante himself ended up taking the L in the stat category. I had himself another quality start. He goes six and two thirds innings, gives up, what, two runs, one earned on eight hits, seven Ks. He doesn't walk anybody, which is something we do not get from Andre Palante very often.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Every dayers know that the Andre Palante experience usually seems to have a lot of traffic on the basis. And that was what happened on Sunday. There were a lot of guys out there, but it wasn't by his own doing where he was walking people. That wasn't the case. A rare no walk effort by Palante who instead made the Cardinals hit the ball to beat him. And yeah, they got eight hits against Andre, which is a lot. But if we've learned anything about Andre so far this season, it's that he tends to work around trouble, which can be exhausting to watch. And I'm sure it's exhausting to Andre out there on the mound.
Starting point is 00:02:54 But in the end, there he was again. You know, you feel like he's not having a good game. And then you look up and there he is. Again, pitching into the seven. seventh inning. The first one came in the first inning after a leadoff single for Michael Garcia. Then he passed Quintino singles to center. Victor can't handle the bounds cleanly. Garcia, give him credit. Excellent base running there by the Royals goes to third base. And then Salvi Perez hits that sack fly makes it one to nothing. We preach the little things all the time here on Cardinals. The Cardinals are a team that takes advantage of other team seemingly small mistakes, turns them into runs. They've been doing it all year long. This time, turn around as fair
Starting point is 00:03:32 play. Royals do it to the Cardinals. Next run also came off the bat of Salvi Perez in the fourth inning when Palante served up a breaking ball that Salvi just waited on and smacked it over the fence and left field for a solo home run to make it two to nothing. It's not like it was a really bad pitch. It really wasn't a lower half of the zone, big vendor, but yeah, over the heart of the plate. So Salvi being the the veteran and the Cardinal crusher that he has been, he just stayed back and drove it. But that was it. That was for runs against Palante, who did get some help from Nathan Church, who went full Superman mode and right field to rob Bobby Witt, Jr. of extra bases and an RBI in that third inning. That was an outstanding catch. My guy Nathan Church continues to make big plays when the team needs
Starting point is 00:04:19 him. Has the offense been as good as you hope it would be? Not really. But defensively, this guy's been a stud, an absolute stud, no matter where you put them, whether it's left field, center, right field. What a, what a, just a utility guy. He's been able to be as far as the outfield goes. So Nathan Church certainly earning his keep on this Cardinals roster. But outside of those moments, the hits he gave up, Palante, they were scattered. And seven strikeouts kept them from becoming more and becoming worse as far as damage goes against
Starting point is 00:04:55 Palante and the Cardinals. So this is the fifth time now in nine starts that Palante has surrendered to or less earned runs in a game. I know. I know. You're saying the same thing I am. Like, really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Yeah. It's real. And I know some fans are still going to hate on Palante because of how tough 2025 was, which is fine. You can feel that way if you want, but, you know, we're in the middle part of May now. Like, turn the page already, boys and girls, because it doesn't matter what happened last season anymore. It's over.
Starting point is 00:05:23 So Palante is, you got to admit, man. He's been a solid back of the rotation. guy for the Cardinals this year. Seven strikeouts, second best single game total this season. And on the year, you're looking at a four and four record. The ERA is just over four at four. And even though he did take the L on Sunday, it's a tough luck loss. I mean, that stuff happens all the time to the best of the business, you know? How many one run losses or two run losses as Paul Skeen's dealt with as a member of the Pirates a bunch? So I'm not. I'm not saying Andre Palente's Paul Skeens. I'm just saying it happens. You know, even the best are going to
Starting point is 00:06:04 lose games that really they pitch good enough to win. It just doesn't happen. You know, Cardle's offense just couldn't get anything going to support him on Sunday for the series against Kansas City. Tip of the cap to the starters, man. They were excellent. Dustin May, quality start on Friday, goes six innings, three runs against on four hits. The four walks are not something you want to see and he knows that. But still, quality start. Saturday, Calahey, six settings, one run, five fits, three walks, another quality start. Palante on Sunday, six and two thirds innings, two runs, quality start. That's now four in a row that this starting rotation is put together. If you go back to Michael McGreevy's game in Sacramento, gives them 18. Quality starts
Starting point is 00:06:46 on the season so far. That's tied for the fifth highest total in the big leagues this season. Like, how many of us saw that coming? If there was something that you pointed at with the Cardinals coming into the year, you're like, I'm not sure. about the rotation. A lot of question marks. Who was going to be good? Who was going to step up? Was Dustin May going to be healthy? Could Andre Palante bounce back from an ugly, ugly 25 season? Is Michael McGreevy really as good as he's shown us so far? We don't know. Libby's second year of being a starter. How's that going to go? Kyle Leahy, transitioning from a lever to starter. We don't know how that's going to work out. So far, Dusty Blake has put this rotation together
Starting point is 00:07:26 they're quite nicely and you got to give them a lot of credit. Now this pitching staff is dead last in strikeouts. We know and new coming into the season that swing and miss was not going to be a thing for this pitching staff. But that makes it even more shocking that this is where they are quality starts-wise because the ball is getting put and play all the time against them. Constantly. So credit to the defense for playing so well behind them.
Starting point is 00:07:56 now have a 988 fielding percentage, 21 errors on the season, but also have the third highest number of chances thanks to that lack of swing and miss. So it's just working well together. The team, the way it's been built where, yeah, we don't have as much swing and miss, but we got this, you know, top five defense behind you. So put them to work. They're out there for you. They're there to help. So use them. Don't walk people. Make the other team put it in play. That's what they did on Sunday. And unfortunately, these didn't find any offense to back up the game plan there. And they lose two to nothing.
Starting point is 00:08:32 So it does happen. We're going to talk about this offense from the weekend. And the latest on Mason wins injury coming up next on Wachton Cardinals. The NBA playoffs are here and every possession matters. If you're looking to get even closer to the action, Fandle has a great offer to get you started right now. New customers can bet $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins. That's right.
Starting point is 00:08:59 You can turn five bucks into $150 and bonus. bets just for getting started. If you haven't done it already, I don't know what you've been waiting for. Fanduel is awesome. It's a lot of fun to be a part of, especially when it gets to playoff time in any sport. But obviously the NBA playoffs, they're down to the conference finals right now. I like using Fandall during the playoffs because everything I need, it's just right there in one place. I'm not somebody who likes to go searching for things. Like, why do you make my job so difficult to have fun on your app? Don't do that. Fandwell takes care of that. You can check the stats, the trends, the matchups before you make your picks, which makes a whole experience.
Starting point is 00:09:31 feel a lot more informed and whether you're looking at player props or maybe you're just following your favorite stars. It adds another level of excitement to each and every game and it's really easy to navigate through the app. It's simple. Even a don't like me can figure it out. And it just makes playoff basketball that much more engaging from start to finish. Cavaliers completed the upset over the Pistons. They move on to the Eastern Conference finals against the New York Knicks. So that'll be cool. In the Western Conference, it is a monster matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Game one is tonight, Thunder favored by six and a half at Fandle.
Starting point is 00:10:06 dot com to get started. Fandall, play your game. Today's episodes are also brought to you by five-hour energy cotton candy. If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know, you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat that is not only going to, you know, subdue those cravings for something sweet, but not going to kill you at the same time as far as how the sugar intake is in your body. And that's why cotton candy, five-hour energy shot.
Starting point is 00:10:33 It's one of my go-to flavors. Always has been when it comes to five-hour energy drinks. That is the classic cotton candy taste that you and I remember, you know, with the tasty caffeine boost and zero sugar, it's a quick and easy way to satisfy the sweet craving while keeping things simple and on the go. You know, cotton candy reminds me of being at the ballgame, you know, going to a cardinal game with my family as a kid. They'd always hook you up with the pink cotton candy.
Starting point is 00:10:58 But you can't be eating sweets like that all day long when you're an adult. you'll get fat. So you don't want to do that. And this is a perfect alternative. I love how convenient it is, small portable shots that I grab whenever I need a little pick me up, whether it's before work, a podcast before the gym, or late night, staying up late watching the Cardinals like when they were on the West Coast. You know, sometimes you need a little something to help you out. And that's where five-hour energy comes into play. It's become my go-to when I want something sweet, but I don't want to go overboard. So bring on the sweetness with cotton candy, five-hour energy shots are available now at five-hournergy.com or on on. Thanks for making Locked on Cardinals.

Starting point is 00:11:55 So clearly the offense was, it was gross. It was gross on Sunday. Not a lot of fun there. It was one of those MIA offenses where just nothing, was going for them. Just nothing happened. It was only the second time this season that the Cardinals had been shut out. And most of the credit needs to go to the royal starter, Stephen Colick, who just had them hammering the ball right into the ground all day long. They granted out 13 times against him.
Starting point is 00:12:24 And for the game, they hit into 18 ground ball outs in total, only had five hits. They were all singles, did not have more than one runner on base in an inning, and didn't get a runner to second base until there were two outs in the ninth inning. Like you're watching the game. You're like, yeah, they're not really doing a whole lot. And then you hear that stat. And you're like, oh my gosh, like nothing has happened here today. And the only reason they got the guy to second base was because of defensive indifference. It wasn't like they hit a double or, you know, bunning a guy. Defensive indifference got him to second base. So talk about a snooze fest as far as the offense goes. I kind of felt bad for the 38,000 plus who were in attendance.
Starting point is 00:13:06 It was the biggest crowd at Bush Stadium since opening day. They braved one of the first hot days of the season, too. It was 82 degrees at first pitch, but we know how it feels at Bush Stadium. 82 feels like 98, dude, it's gross. So perhaps that heat is a reason why you saw Mason win have to leave that game early in the seventh inning after licking out of what would have been a double play. It was a would-be double play, but he experienced what he described as like a cramp type of feeling in his left calf.
Starting point is 00:13:34 So for precautionary reasons, they took him out and let Cesar Prieto run for him. But here's what manager Ali Marmel and Mason Wynn had to say about the injury after the game. Discomfort in this left knee more precautionary than anything. They didn't want to push through it. So they took a look at it during the end of that game, you know, kind of day to day at the moment. We'll see how he comes in tomorrow. Yeah, I mean, almost felt like a cramp.
Starting point is 00:14:01 But, you know, just calf tightened up on me a little bit. you know, they thought it was better to take me out. You know, I wanted to stay in and, you know, he told me to run. I took one step. And I was like, it's just probably not worth it. Nothing, nothing too serious. I'm not worried about it. So there you have it.
Starting point is 00:14:15 The voices of Ali Marmal and Mason Wynn. Now, you certainly hope that it's not something that lingers. It doesn't appear. You know, Mason Wend doesn't feel like it's much. But you remember when he had the little hip thing and he was like, ah, you know, it was no big deal. It would be all right. And they held them out for a few days.
Starting point is 00:14:30 And, you know, the heat that was at Bush Stadium on Sunday, lots of games recently, you know, might have just all caught up with him. And we know Mason's had plenty of leg issues before, but he did say it was not the leg that he had the knee issues with last year. So that was some positive news. Again, you have the day off on Monday. So it's, you know, you get an extra day to rest it and see how it feels coming back on Tuesday. If he does have to sit for a game or two, it's not the end of the world. You know, you got plenty of ways to cover the shortstop position. You've got to Jaycee and Fermin and Prieto, even J.J. Weatherholt if it has to happen, but it certainly would be a shame to not have Mason win as you come into the string of division games, which starts on Tuesday because you're going to play the Pirates. They're in town for three. Then you travel to Cincinnati to face the Reds for three, then to Milwaukee, Brewers for three, you know, these division opponents, you want to be as healthy as possible. And Mason win obviously is an important cog to everything that goes on with this Cardinals team, specifically defensively, up the middle. He's in, you know, gold glove winner in,
Starting point is 00:15:33 shortstop and you would hate to lose that weapon that he is at the shortstop position. And he's been holding his own head offensively as well. So let's hope for good things for Mason Wynn, get some treatment and feel better starting up on Tuesday when they get back to action. Now, as far as the series goes, you know, I normally hand out the three stars for the whole weekend when we have a weekend series. And I just kind of these are the three guys that stood out to me for the weekend. And for this series, I think the number of the next. number one, number two, and number three stars are all going to the Stephen F. Austin baseball club and the tarps off terrace fans who became a national sensation over the weekend with their antics
Starting point is 00:16:16 in Wright Field on Friday night. That's when it started. And, you know, if you follow this story at all, and, you know, I posted on Friday night post game about how just crazy it was, like how it all just organically started to come together. It started out as the Stephen F. Austin baseball club. They were there trying to have some fun on a Friday night while they were in town for their tournament. They were playing in Alton, Illinois. And it just, what they were doing just spread like wildfire over what started with just
Starting point is 00:16:46 their team in the section right field, ended up taking off. And it spread over four sections and helped transform the aura at Bush Stadium in something most of us haven't really seen there since Albert was chasing 700. Like when was the last time like everything, and I don't want to count opening days because that's always like that. But like for like a regular season game, when was the last time it just the vibes felt that way? To me it was Albert chasing 700. And one of my biggest complaints about the cartels last few years and even in the years that they were winning was how it always seemed like it was more of a job than it was these guys out there,
Starting point is 00:17:28 playing a kid's game at the highest level. You know, other teams are doing fun handshakes. They got, they got props in the dugout and playing with this, you know, this youthful joy of the game of baseball while the Cardinals look like they were being held hostage most nights and were being forced to play baseball that night. And I hated that. And I understand that there are fans that don't like all the shenanigans that go on with baseball these days. They don't like the, you know, the, the, the, the staring at the home runs,
Starting point is 00:18:01 the bat flips, the, the, you know, like I said, the props in the in the dugouts and stuff. Some people don't like it. They find it annoying and they don't think that's the way it should be played. But it's a different world. It's a different game now. And why not have some fun while, while you're, while you're playing this game and making millions of dollars. And, you know, you see kids respond to stuff like this. And you want more fans to be. You know, enjoying the game of baseball instead of turning away because it's boring. And what has baseball been doing? Trying to make the game more entertaining for the youth of America.
Starting point is 00:18:36 You know, they're trying to get more young fans out there. And here you have it on a Friday night, some college kids in town and they turn this, what was kind of a dull game for a little bit. And they just start taking their shirts off, swinging their shirts. and it just people wanted that and they needed that. They craved it and they found something that they could latch on to. And it was awesome to see all weekend long. Now, sure, we've had moments of good nature fun with like,
Starting point is 00:19:06 I still have it back here somewhere, the cheeseburger phone. Do you guys remember that? The Cardinals did that, but it's been very rare that the Cardinals had something fun to talk about and to see the atmosphere that went on and it was, you know, like frat party energy that you see at college football and basketball. ball games and to see it taking place at Bush Stadium, rooting for the Cardinals, not against them. To have that in the ballpark for a few days was pretty awesome.
Starting point is 00:19:33 Sadly, the team couldn't make it to the game on Sunday. Maybe that's why the Cardinals lost. But sadly, they could make it because they had their own game that night, a game that they also lost, unfortunately. But what a difference they made in the two games that they were there. And, you know, even Sunday without them, the Tarbsoft Harris is what I think we're going to start calling it was was packed after ali bought the the sections and gave the tickets away and you know according to the team's ex account the stephen f austin guys they're planning to put
Starting point is 00:20:04 some sort of t-shirt together for fans to purchase so we'll keep an eye on that for you guys and uh you know you can follow them if you want to and uh you know take responsibility for yourself but uh they're available at s f a club bsb all so uh give them a follow man uh they they deserve it They also shout out to the Cardinals fans who went to see them play on Sunday in Alton, Illinois. Very cool of you guys to do that. You know, in a perfect world, you know, it would have been nice to see some of the Cardinals players go out there and watch them. But obviously, life is what it is. So it was still really, really badass, you know, that's the best way to describe it.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Just badass to see Ali have the guys come down after the game on Saturday. They come down to the clubhouse, meet the guys. the guys are all taking their shirts off and swinging them around in the locker room. And Jeff Jones stated it where he was like, he's like, what a difference it is in each clubhouse right now where the royals, it's like deathly quiet. There's nothing happening. No TV, no music.
Starting point is 00:21:07 Nobody's talking over on the other side. And the Cardinals, we've got college guys in there with their shirts off, swinging them around. Everybody's dancing and having a good time. And those are the vibes you want. And these are the vibes you're getting from the St. Louis Cardinals, team so far in 2026 and people are starting to pay attention. People are starting to latch on to it again, 38,000 at Bush Stadium on Sunday and very, very soon. You know, you got the pirates, but then
Starting point is 00:21:33 the Cubs are going to be in town very soon as well. So I would hope that that would be a sellout at Bush Stadium when the Cubbies are there and perhaps they're battling for first place at that point. So once in a lifetime memories with the organization in the city, I really hope. I hope the doesn't die off, but Ollie's not going to buy tickets to all these games. So it feels like it might be unsustainable, but what a unique and just powerful yet fun story. You know, making baseball fun again at Bush Stadium was always a goal this year with the team being as young as they are. You know, it wasn't them that drove fans away. It's not the player's fault, but these kids are playing good, man. And the team winning was half the battle. And you're seeing that. And now you're starting
Starting point is 00:22:19 to see fans excited to be at Cardinals games and laughing and yelling and it's become something people want to be at. It's become, you know, must see TV to see what these guys are going to be doing. It's just outstanding stuff. So hats off to all of you who participated. And of course, to the Stephen F. Austin guys, thank you. Come back anytime. Our final segment, we'll check in on the rest of the NL Central and preview the Pirates series, which starts on Tuesday. This is locked on Cardinals. Starting point is 00:25:03 But just good stuff. You know, we take a look at things in the NL Central right now. The Cubs had their hands full with the White Sox. They're a surprising team so far in the American League. The Cubs lost two of three to Chicago. Got walked off on Sunday. That's also coming off of losing two of three to the Braves for a two and four week. Rumors go four and two last week with series wins over the Padres and the Twins.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Cardinals go four and two as well with their series wins over the A's and Royals. that puts both the Cardinals and the Brewers at one and a half games back in the division. Brewers are like percentage points ahead of the Cardinals in the division itself. Pittsburgh won two of three over the Rockies, but then got swept at home by the Phillies. Got shut out both Saturday and Sunday. Christopher Sanchez got him on Saturday through a complete game shutout. And then Zach Wheeler got him on Sunday. So that Phillies team is turning things around pretty quickly.
Starting point is 00:25:54 Reds also go two and four this week, losing series at home to the national. and on the road at Cleveland. The Pirates and Reds are now tied at the bottom of the division at 24 and 23 and our five games back of first place Chicago. So that affects the power rankings just a little bit. Braves take over there. And number one, they take over the top spot from the Cubs who fall to number three. Dodgers are at number two. Ray swap with the Yankees and go to number four. How surprising is that Tampa Bay team bet? Yangs dropped the five. Brewer stay at six, Padre stay at seven. Cardinals stay at eight. guardians jump up to number nine, the pirates fall to number 10. Off day today before the pirates come to town. And the key to this next series, at least in my opinion, is going to be to get past the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation,
Starting point is 00:26:40 get into that bullpen. Over their last 18 games, the pirates have given up 44 earned runs in 70 and a third innings, just from the bullpen. That's nearly a six ERA. And there's a lot of teams dealing with bullpen issues. We know here in St. Louis, we've got our own bullpen in. We know we're not perfect by any means.
Starting point is 00:26:57 So being able to get past that rotation and get to the bullpen of the pirates is something that should be a priority, you know, taking pitches, really working the counts against these starters is going to be key so that we can get them out of there as quickly as possible. Not sure if it's good news or bad news, but the Cardinals won't have to face Paul Skeens, who they still have never lost to. So it sucks that you don't get to see schemes. and we've had success against him. But at the same time, you're like,
Starting point is 00:27:27 I'm kind of glad I don't have to see skeins in this series just through on Sunday in the loss of the Phillies. So pirates are going to open up with their next best guy in Mitch Keller. That'll be Keller versus Matthew Libertor on Tuesday. Carmen Migenski versus Michael McGreevy on Wednesday and then Braxton Ashcraft against Dustin May on Thursday. Maginsky and Ashcraft, they've still been very, very good for the pirates. So just because they're not household names, don't take them for granted.
Starting point is 00:27:54 So that'll be the matchups before heading out to Cincinnati for the weekend. The boys from Stephen F. Austin won't be there to save them this week. So the guys have to conjure up some offense. And it all starts really at the top of the order where J.J. Weatherholt, who was on fire against Pittsburgh. Remember, he was killing the ball. 375 average in that series, two dingers, six runs scored. He was all over the place in that four-game sweep. Since that series, though, he's sitting just 182 with six runs scored in 14 games.
Starting point is 00:28:23 he's the guy that stirs this Cardinals Kool-Aid. So we need to get him going again so we can unlock this offense and watch it flourish again.
