Starting point is 00:00:00 Michael McGreevy gets blasted as the sinking Cardinals fall deeper and deeper into the abyss of irrelevancy. Cue the Titanic music. You are locked on Cardinals. Haffron and the misery that is the second half of the season continued for the Cardinals on Tuesday, as they get thumped yet again by the Chicago Cubs by score of 10 to 2. And what drives me nuts about this type of game is that it just wasn't competitive at all.

Starting point is 00:00:48 There was nothing fun about this game. You know, the Cubs came out and murdered Michael McGreevy. We watched a murder happen. There were witnesses everywhere over that first two winnings. You know, he didn't. even make it through two innings before the Cardinals were forced to go to the bullpen. Something obviously you're not trying to do. You don't want to do that. And it happened all the same. McGreevy has been one of the more stable guys for this rotation this year. But I mean,

Starting point is 00:01:22 it was miserable watching that. It was foul ball after foul ball. They just kept filing pitch after pitch off. And eventually when McGreevy would finally make a mistake over the plate, they made him pay. He goes, one and two thirds in ACLF, seven runs on eight hits, two walks, two Ks, easily his worst start in his big league career, at least that I remember. I didn't even go back and check anything else. I was just like, this has got to be the worst, right? McGreevy faced 15 total hitters, 10 of them got on. It took him 63 pitches to get to that point before Ali finally threw in the towel on his outing and it was a bloody towel by that point. If this had been a boxing match, it was a combination of jabs and hooks that eventually cut them open to the point where the ref had to stop the fight.

Starting point is 00:02:13 You know, they never delivered what I would deem a knockout blow per se. But it was more like Apollo Creed versus Rocky in that first fight. Just constant punishment. Just pop, pop, pop, right in the kisser. You got a single to right, then a ground rule doubled to right, then another double to right. and it's two to nothing already in the first inning. And already, you know, knowing that this offense is struggling the way it is

Starting point is 00:02:39 and the amount of pitches McGreevy was throwing, you knew trouble was a Bruin. And then in the second inning, it all came crumbling down. Lead off single by Michael Conforto to right field. Jab, a walk to Carson Kelly, ground out moves them over, and then PCA hits one that I genuinely thought was a bomb.

Starting point is 00:02:56 I thought that was gone. But Bush Stadium swallows it up. It's a sack fly to make a three to nothing. but at least now you got two outs. You're like, all right, three and a nothing, two outs. Let's get out of this thing. But, oh no, oh no. Suzuki doubles again, this time to left field, right cross.

Starting point is 00:03:14 Then it's four to nothing. Michael Bush, singles to right, boom, jabbed to the nose, five nothing. Bragman singles to right, jabbed to the chin, walk to hap, then Horner singles, combination, bop, bop to the nose. Guess where it went, by the way, right field? Cubs had a plan, man.

Starting point is 00:03:31 They were like, we're going to take this dude to the opposite field. We're not going to try to pull him. He doesn't throw hard enough. Let's just take it where he's throwing it. And they were hugely successful with that game plan. Seven to nothing. And that was all she wrote. No home runs.

Starting point is 00:03:49 No big blasts. Just death by a thousand cuts. Great at bats by the Cubs. And McGreevy, who is not a swing and miss guy, couldn't get them to hit the ball where, somebody was standing. Every time they put it in play, it seemed to go somewhere where there was nobody. Whether the shift was on, it was miserable, absolutely miserable.

Starting point is 00:04:12 They found grass over and over and over. And at the end of it, McGreevy, I'm sure, felt a little shell shock. The fans that were there to see the Cardinals, they're doing this. Covering their faces like, what the hell are we witnessing here? while the fans in Cubby Blue are over there throwing a party in our house. It's embarrassing, man. That is not what you want to see. And it hurts worse because it is a division rival, right?

Starting point is 00:04:41 It's the Cubs. So, you know, perhaps it's payback or karma for the thumping that the Cardinals put on the Cubs at Wrigley Field over the holiday weekend. But, you know, at that time, it's a different situation, though, because at that time, the Cubs were playing pretty good. like it wasn't like the Cardinals were rolling into Wrigley firing on all cylinders and the Cubs were where the Cardinals are right now where they were just in like a 10-game losing streak like the Cubs had been on earlier in the season. That wasn't the case at all. And that offensive barrage that the Cardinals put on at Wrigley, it came out of nowhere.

Starting point is 00:05:16 Nobody expected that. What we saw on Monday and Tuesday so far in this series is really just a continuation of what has been happening to the Cardinals since the guy's return from the All-Star break and even before that. And that's just a lot of losing, not a lot of offense and like a Swiss cheese type of pitching staff at the moment. You know, it just, it's like whackamol right now where you think you got something going well, like the starting pitching, which was pitching kind of well. And now, now you've got an issue there. Bullpen's been an issue. All the the time. We don't know which button to push anymore.

Starting point is 00:05:57 Offense can't get anything going. They're now three and nine since the all-star break. They've looked like a team that has just completely run out of steam, which is strange, considering they're a very young team. They shouldn't be running out of steam. But again, maybe some of these guys, this is the most baseball they've ever played in one season, specifically a guy like a, like a JJ Weatherholt. You know, maybe he's wearing down. But certainly they don't look like the team that, you know, in the first half, caught the baseball world by surprise. You know, how many people were like,

Starting point is 00:06:29 I look at the Cardinals. Look what they're doing. This is great. They're ahead of schedule. And now we're just trying to stay out of last place, which is where everybody predicted they would be at the beginning of the year. You know, over the last couple of seasons. You know, this is kind of what we've been seeing.

Starting point is 00:06:48 It's a dull, lifeless, offensively challenged ball club. Like, there's not a lot of fun out there right now. Sure. Winning has something to do with that. Like I had fun at the game on Saturday when they, when they beat the Red 7 and nothing, that was fun. But those moments are a few and far between right now. And it's not a lot of fun to be watching this Cardinals team. Offensively, they've been in the dumps for a while.

Starting point is 00:07:10 We all know that. And last night it was just more of the same. I'm going to kind of guide you through the filth. It was Tuesday night. We'll get into that next. Plus, we got Cardinal Confessions coming up a little bit later where I'll read some of the comments that people have left about what they think of what the Cardinals are doing at the moment. And maybe we'll talk a little trade deadline as well. We'll see how much time we got.

I feel like I'm watching the 26th. season slowly wither away and die. And I know it feels like we just keep repeating ourselves,

Starting point is 00:09:32 but nothing is changing here. I don't have any magical words for you as to why this offense is as bad as it is right now. It continues to be one of the worst in baseball, has been for quite some time. I can give you stats and go, look, this is how bad they suck. We'll go through a couple of them, but I don't know why they suck. Like, I don't know what has changed with them that has made them all of a sudden worse, you know,

Starting point is 00:09:59 you know, Thomas Govayton and I were talking about, like, you know, bat speed the other day about Ivan Herrera's bat speed and he ended up tweeting something out about it and how that's declining. Is that happening to everybody? I don't know. It's just, it's rough. It's really, really rough. They don't, they don't seem like they have much of a plan up there at the plate anymore. It just, it's bad. And when I look at the lineup, and I know it's not loaded with you know, superstar names, but it sure as hell should be doing more than we've seen over the last month. You know, I broke it down on Monday how it wasn't like an offense that was lighting up

Starting point is 00:10:37 scoreboards in the first half, but I didn't think it would ever fall to this level for this long, too. You have stretches where offenses goes and go into Fonx. It happens in every sport, but to have it prolonged for as long as it's been. And yeah, you get a game here or two where they pop off again, go back to Saturday night, seven runs against the Reds against Hunter Green. Like, where the hell is that offense all the time? Hunter Green is a pretty darn good pitcher. Where the hell is that? You know, it's been like since that game in Arizona when they scored seven and lost it in the end,

Starting point is 00:11:12 like there just hasn't been much at all. First inning, JJ Weatherhold has a decent six-pitch at bat. Walker lines out on the first pitch. He didn't smoke it, but an out all the same. And then Burley smashes one that gets swallowed up. up by Bush Stadium, which I'm now referring to as the Death Valley of Major League Baseball. And Burley's reaction afterwards says it all, where you saw it on Cardinal Gifts or Gifts, however you want to say it.

Starting point is 00:11:38 I say gifts. But, and he's like, man, F this place. And it's not because he's mad at the fans or the team or his manager. He's talking about the ballpark because that's a home run, almost everywhere else you play in Major League Baseball. Bush this year has been the worst ballpark to him. hit in in the major leagues. And part of that is, you know, the team that plays there 81 times. They aren't a big home run team. Nobody expected them to be, right?

Starting point is 00:12:06 22nd in the league and dingers, 52 home runs at home and 58 games on the road, though. They got 60 and 49. This was not a team that was built with power in mind. The idea, I think, with this offense is supposed to be down the line, plug in the gaps, doubles. That's the idea. And they're just not getting them. They're not. And when they do get a hold of one, it appears that it just is going to die at the hoarding track almost every time. It hits some sort of force field out there and just goes, it's weird. How many fly balls have we seen this year off the bat of Cardinals of Bush Stadium that fall right in front of the wall or other teams in general? Like, you know, Sam Oliver from Lockton Cubs when he was tweeting about the game last night.

Starting point is 00:12:51 He goes, something's up with this ballpark, man. How did that not, that one by PCA? How did that not go out? I know. Cardinals have to live in this hell all the time for whatever reason. It just isn't traveling. And it didn't used to be like this. But for, you know, this year specifically, it's really, really bad.

Starting point is 00:13:13 Like if you go to like baseball Savon, you can look at ballpark comparisons and stuff. And, you know, the stats are all there about how bad it is to hit at Bush Stadium this year. It's like a minus 4.4 stadium grade or something. Like it's brutal. No cheapies get out. And some that should go out are coming up short. And you are starting to see the frustration from some of the guys in this Cardinals lineup about it. They're not winning, which is the big reason they're frustrated.

Starting point is 00:13:41 But then there's balls that they're hitting that they're not finding holes. They're dying at the warning track. Everybody's frustrated. Us's fans are frustrated. The team coaching staff, front office, I'm sure, is frustrated. frustrated. The Cardinals end up pushing one across in that fourth inning after a leadoff walk by Burley. Newton Mason win single and church hits that sack fly to get the zero off the board. But again, it's a situation where you need more than just a sack fly there. This wasn't a two run ballgame

Starting point is 00:14:10 or something. You needed more. And all you get is the sack fly. One out chance to do more damage and they don't, which has been a familiar story with them. They just get the one. They wouldn't score again until the bottom of the ninth inning when it was 10 to 1 at this point. Newt walks to lead off that inning and then Mason and wind devils down the line and left to make it 10 to 2. But at this point, it's almost like watching a little league team play where, you know, the other team is about to mercy rule them. And so they just kind of jog around lolly gagged to steal from Bull Durham.

Starting point is 00:14:44 Kind of like, hey, look at you guys. Good for hitting the ball hard. Yay, here's an easy double. Like there was no, nobody cared at that. point. Post-dispatch did a fun article the other day on six stats, exemplifying the offense of slump since July the 5th ahead of Tuesday's game. So these stats don't reflect what they are now after the 10 to 2 lost. But the Cardinals 202 batting average in that span, last in baseball by a wide margin, 22 points below the next worst team. The team's 576

Starting point is 00:15:15 on base, slugging percentage is also a distant last, 59 points worse than the second worst team. That's how bad it is, guys. The Cardinals MLB ranking and line drive rate is plummeted from 9th to 24th to 24th from that point on. So they've slid 15 spots. Two of the Cardinal six qualified starters, only two of them, Alec Berlinson and Jordan Walker, are above average offensively in this span that we're going through. The other four qualified starters each sport a sub 600 OPS since July 5th. J.J. Weatherholts at 568, New R 56, Mason Wynn, 516, Yvonne Herrera, 489. Weatherholt is struggling against off speed and breaking pitches this month.

Starting point is 00:16:00 And I hate putting all the pressure on JJ, but, you know, your leadoff guy, he's the dude that gets this whole thing going, even though even when he does get on base now, they don't do anything with him on base. But it's, you know, when he starts struggling, there's this trickle-down effect. And now you've got J-J struggling. Yvonne Herrera was batting second and he was just... misery right now is ice cold. So they moved Jordan Walker.

Starting point is 00:16:27 They flip flopped him. Walker hasn't really done all that much either since coming back from the home run derby. Burleson has had moments. But, you know, Weatherholt is the guy that gets it going. And his expected weight on base average versus breaking pitches is down 54 points in July, which is territory he hasn't seen since the season's first month.

Starting point is 00:16:47 So anything that he had going for him, it's all starting to slide. And it's just overall, it's just a mess. It's just a mess. And it's not a lot of fun to watch. Kudos to those of you who stuck around for most of the game last night. We'll do some cardal confessions next. And we'll see if we can answer some of the questions that people have.

Starting point is 00:17:09 Most people are just upset and want everybody fired and to move on. I don't think that's going to happen. But we'll do the cardal confessions next on lockdown. Starting point is 00:18:51 It's not going to happen. You guys can keep writing it. It's not going to happen. They just signed them doing extension. This is the guy they want in the clubhouse. if you disagree with that, that's great, but he's not going anywhere. Let's go with this one, though. It's crazy the season is playing out just like last years from being nine games over 500

Starting point is 00:19:12 at one point to getting smoked by the debacks right out of the All-Star break and collapsing in the second half. Yeah, it is very familiar to what we saw last season. And it appears we are headed down that similar path with the trading away of veteran guys who, you know, exactly who. Who's going to get traded? We're not completely sure yet. Rumor Mill's got a lot of people being brought up. Dustin May, certainly there. Yvonne Herrera is a name because people are looking for right-handed bats and the fact that he can catch. Nobody's saying he's a good catcher, but because he can catch and he can probably play some other spots,

Starting point is 00:19:47 he's going to get some attention, even though the numbers have not been that good lately, but he's a right-handed bat and people are looking for that. Ryan Stannick out of the bullpen throws 100. Riley O'Brien up there in the league. leader in saves, Jojo Romero when he gets back from the injured list, Pedro Pahas, who's not defensive first type of guy, but people are looking for catchers. Lars Newpar. Obviously, there's some things to like about Lars with the on-base percentage. There's a lot to not like about Lars because you don't know if he's going to stay healthy ever, although he's been able to do it for the most part this year since coming back.

Starting point is 00:20:22 But those are the likely candidates to go, and I'm sure people will be discussed outside of those guys, too. I'm sure that, you know, we've brought up. What about an Andre Palante? Would somebody be interested in trying to bring him on as a back of the rotation guy? Do you maximize what he's doing this year by trading him away and getting a decent return thinking that maybe this year is kind of a fluke? And maybe he's not going to do that again later on in the future.

Starting point is 00:20:52 You know, we just did a whole episode on the trade pool of guys on this roster that could be dealt. We did that back on Tuesday, so check that out if you missed it. Libertora McGreevy. Has Miles Michaels snuck back in and jinxed us with Burning Sage in the clubhouse again? Remember that barrel of funnies? Yeah, yeah. And you know what's crazy when you talk about Miles Michaelis and, you know, we talk about how bad he was over the last couple of seasons.

Starting point is 00:21:19 And Sandy McMillan over at Dealing the Cards, which is a fun podcast. You guys haven't watched that yet. I tweeted some stats comparing Michaelis and Libertor. It's pretty eye-popping. You know, he's talking about Michaelis' worst season. Let me bring it up here. 24 season.

Starting point is 00:21:37 Put up the following numbers, 5.35 ERA, 171 and two-thirds innings pitch, had a 1.276 whip, 6.4 case per 9, 1.3 walk per 9, 4.24 FIPP, 26 Dinger is allowed, beware of negative 0.5, 23% below league average, according to ERA plus. This year, Matthew Libitor is at a 5.26 ERA. So right there, 102.2 in two-thirds in-thirds-innings pitch. He's got a 1.5-6 whip, which is worse than Michaelis. Of course, Michaelis didn't walk a lot of people.

Starting point is 00:22:12 8.9 case per nine, which is better. 3.6 walks per nine, which is way worse. 4.88 FIP, which is worse. 18 home runs allowed. Again, he's thrown in like 70 innings less. and a B-WR of a minus 0.4. So in the ERA plus, 23% below league average. That's how bad Libby has been.

Starting point is 00:22:37 In his, Michaelis's worst year as a cardinal, that's what we're getting out of Matthew Libertor in his second full season as a starter. And the people that are like, dude, why is he still in the rotation? Well, I think we'll see what happens after the trade deadline because we don't know who's staying and going. But, you know, they demoted it.

Starting point is 00:22:55 Victor and Gorman because they couldn't hit. And they haven't punted on Libby as a starter yet, but the proof is there. He's not very good. And he has not taken the steps forward that many of us had hoped. I still would like to see him in the bullpen because I saw him succeed there. I've never seen him succeed as a starting pitcher in the major leagues yet. I just haven't. And the bullpen, I saw him have success.

Starting point is 00:23:18 So I would like to see that again at some point this year. they always say that you find out the character of your players or team when they go through adversity. Well, we are at that point. Yes, yes, we are. And that's the message that Ali is sending out, you know, that when your ships are down, who are the guys that are going to dig down and learn from this, become better for it in the future and who are going to let it consume them and affect their overall play and more out? You know, it's real easy for us as fans to quit on them. A lot of people are. Like, you know, I get it. Look how bad they've been. They're not going to show up at the ballpark.

Starting point is 00:23:56 There's no reason to. There's not fun baseball being played. It's a lot of losing. So I think you're going to start seeing more empty seats. We can bitch and moan on social media as much as we want. Call for people to be fired. That is your right. But the players, they still got to go to work every day and give maximum effort,

Starting point is 00:24:15 even though the writing is on the wall that some of these guys that are in that room in that clubhouse right now are not going to be around much longer. But again, 2026 was not the goal. They had exceeded expectations, at least in the first half. And that was a lot of fun. It was a great story. And now that chapter is over and the dog days of summer are barking and our boys aren't stepping up. And this young group's got to figure out how to get back to playing competitive baseball. I can't watch.

Starting point is 00:24:48 Like what we watched last night was absolutely. Like watching that, that's not fun. You want to lose, like, at least Monday's game. You know, they lost seven to three, but it was a competitive game for the most part until, you know, late in the game when they expanded that lead. But I just watching what we saw last night, that's just miserable to me.

Starting point is 00:25:10 And I need competitive baseball at the very least. and we'll see. Wild card team, my ass, two Zs. These batters couldn't hit a hot air balloon with a telephone pole. And the pitch is have a clue what the strike zone is or even where it's at.

Starting point is 00:25:26 Yeah, the offense disappearing like this is the strangest part of it all for me because they do have talent in that lineup, at least in the top four spots. And all of them are going through it right now and have been for so long that, like they got to break out eventually, right? Like it's got to happen eventually.

Starting point is 00:25:45 But it's not going to happen in time to save them from the trade deadline, which maybe in the grand scheme of things isn't the worst thing. You know, this year was supposed to be about the future. And this is just another lesson on what it takes to win and sustain that winning culture over 162 game season, how difficult that really is. And why making the playoffs isn't as easy as the Cardinals made it seem for all of those years with, you know, Tony LaRusa and. and Albert and Yaddy and Wayno and the way the front office was able to put together really good teams

Starting point is 00:26:19 and how the farm system was able to churn out guys that either helped the Cardinals win or got traded for guys that helped the Cardinals win. And this, what we're seeing now is more of what I think most people expect it out of the Cardinals. I think the front office expected them to be the way we're seeing things right now, that they were going to lose a whole lot more than they were going to win. And the first half, I think caught, just shocked to everybody. They're like, I mean, there's a good energy here, and we're having fun and stuff. And now we're not having fun.

Starting point is 00:26:52 And the losing is repetitive and it keeps happening. And, you know, you're, again, losing to the angels, losing to the Cubs sucks. I get it. But that is a very good team, even though they've been decimated by injuries, they're going to the playoffs. The Cubs are going to the playoffs. they'll probably make some moves here. They'll get some people, and they're going to the playoffs. That team's good.

Starting point is 00:27:17 The Angels and the Reds have not been good teams this year, specifically the Angels. I think the Reds are way underachieving. I thought they would be much better than they are. And they've beaten them for the most part. But here at this juncture, like in this last week, to be losing two out of three to the Angels and to the Reds, that's the stuff that drives me nuts.

Starting point is 00:27:39 because you're not you're not as bad as them. At least you haven't been. And now we're seeing it and that they're at the worst of the worst that they've been all season. And the Cubs are taking advantage of that and kicking them while they're down, which they should, which they should. So live it up, Cubs fans. I see you in the comments.
