Starting point is 00:00:00 Two St. Louis Cardinals were announced his finalist for Silver Slugger Awards. And they just so happen to be two of the guys that have been mentioned in trade rumors. Haffer and a former national radio sports anchor born and raised in St. Louis, Patville High School, by the way, case you're a while.
Starting point is 00:00:34 wondering. Lifetime Cardinals fan and I am your host for Locktown Cardinals, part of the Locktown Podcast Network covering your team every day. Today's episode, after what Shohei Otani did in Game 4 of that NLCS, I wanted to take a look back and check out some of the best games that I remember seeing involve Cardinals players, offensive games.
Starting point is 00:01:19 We're not going to be talking pitching, but we're going to go with the offensive side of things. But I don't know, it's always fun to go down memory lane and, you know, reminisce about some of the great games that we have seen in the past. So we'll do that some one-man wrecking crew type of games. We're going to do some cardinal confessions. We'll discuss some of the free agent pitching comments that I got from Monday's show. We'll begin today, though, with the announcements of the NL Silver Slugger Award finalists. And would you look at that? We got a couple of cardinals who have made the cut.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Congratulations. Going out to Alec Berlinson and Brendan Donovan, who were both a finalist in the utility spot for the National League. The winners will be announced on November 7th. And this is, in a way, a good thing that they're actually both in the same category, same spot in that utility role, because the odds that one of them walks away with the award is pretty good. 66% of my map is correct. Their competition will be San Diego Padres Utility Man, Jake Croninworth. Now, you might be asking why utility?
Starting point is 00:02:24 What exactly does that mean? Well, you know how things are these days where managers are always switching guys. round for the best matchups. Cardinals do this quite often. Ali, Tony LaRusa used to do it all the time. Ali's pretty good at it. Finding spots for guys to play to get the best offensive lineup that they can ready to go. So, you know, we saw Yvonne Herrera and left field at part times this year. You know, Burleson will play out, field play first. But we had pahs at second base at one point. But it's nice to have versatile pieces like this to, you know, move around the chess sport. if you will during the season.
Starting point is 00:03:01 It's why we love guys that the Cardinals had in the past like a Tommy Edmund, just like Fred and Donovan now. You know, they make life a lot easier on the managers. Burley qualified this time because of playing in the outfield and at first base. Donnie outfield second points of shortstop this year too. Coronaworth was mostly a second baseman, but he also dabbled at first base and shortstop. So hence the utility role for these guys.
Starting point is 00:03:28 So it all makes sense, right? They've had this spot since 2022. Previous winners were Brandon Drury, who I believe was with the Reds that year before getting traded to the Padres in 2022. Cody Bellinger with the Cubs in 23 and then mooky bets of the Dodgers last year. So let's take a look at the tail of the tape, shall we? We're going to start with the man finally known as Biscuits, Mr. Alec Berlison, who in his full second year, you know, I should say second full year.
Starting point is 00:04:02 That's not really good English, is it? Second full year as an everyday hitter. I found him to be very impressive. I remember looking up during the final month of the season. And you know, you just kind of look at stats. You're like, wait, hold on a second. Alec Berlison is inching closer to the top of the batting average list in the National League.
Starting point is 00:04:22 He's up for a batting title? Wait, when did this happen? I feel like it was kind of a sneaky season. Burley. Not a lot of people expected him to be as good as he was. And he was consistent. That was the thing is that he stayed kind of on the same plateau most of the year. It wasn't like there were huge dips where he had months where he said, I don't think he had months like that where he was hitting like crazy low average or anything like that. It just felt like he was he was kind of right there the whole year, which is, you know, kind of what you want. You know, you want somebody who you can trust
Starting point is 00:04:58 and is stable for most of the year. Let me look at this real quick, just to be sure. 259, 303, 317, 265, 284, 313. Lowest batting average month, July, 265. So very consistent this year for Alec Berluson. 290 batting average overall this year, which finished six in the NL. Trey Turner won it at 304, which is crazy low.
Starting point is 00:05:25 He hit 18 home runs, 69 RBIs. Nice. 54 runs scored, had a 343 OBP, 459 slugging, 802 OPS, OPS plus at 125, is WRC plus 124. Brendan Donovan was hampered by injuries this year, we know that, but still hit 287, 10 home runs, 50 RBIs, 64 runs scored, 353 OBP, 422 slugging, 775 OPS, OPS plus at 1119, WRC plus at 119. as well. Their competition is Jake Croninworth, who I do not have a photo of, so I'm not going to put that up there. But he had a batting line of 246, 11 home runs, 59 RBI, 61 runs scored a 367 OBP, 377 slugging, 755 OPS, OPS plus at 108, WRC plus at 117. So looking at those numbers, here is how they ranked.
Starting point is 00:06:26 batting average. Burleson. Home runs. Burley. RBIs. Burley. Run scored. Donnie. O.B. Pronenworth. Slugging. Burley. OPS. OPS plus. Burley. W.R.C. Plus. Burley. If Alec Berlison doesn't win this, then just burn the whole thing down because it don't make sense. What a freaking year for Alec Berlinson. Pretty impressive stuff from the 26-year-old former second rounder, who has now put together back-to-back seasons that has solidified himself as an everyday hitter in this lineup and probably every lineup in Major League Baseball. 2025, he hit 190 or 2024, he hit 195 against left-handers. We thought that was a problem, right? You know, you're like, you can't have that. So he obviously is somebody who's going to have to platoon. Well, we can't use that excuse anymore because this past year he hit 271.
Starting point is 00:07:26 against left-handers. So it doesn't matter. Lefty, righty, whoever's on the mound, Alec Berluson is in this lineup, should be in this lineup, arguably the best hitter on your team. It's no wonder why people are calling about his availability. We mentioned this in yesterday's episode that Derek Gould said in his chat on Monday that a few teams are curious what it will take to acquire Nolan Gorman via trade or Alec Berluson. I know if we took a poll right now, I would say 98% of fans would say you trade Gorman over Berlinson. So I don't really have to question that. He can play the corner outfield spots.
Starting point is 00:08:04 He's not great at them. Range isn't good. Speed isn't good. But he gives you maximum effort. You can never say he's out there loafing around or anything. I feel like you could do worse than Alec Berlinson in the corner outfield. He has a very good arm. And sometimes you just got to take the good with the bad.
Starting point is 00:08:21 You know, as I mentioned yesterday, he belongs at first base and D.H. that's where his best spots are going to be moving forward. But when you need offense, you have to have his bat in the lineup wherever you can. So if he's got to play a corner outfield spot, so be it. So be it. I don't care which one he's in or if he's deaging or if he's at first. You know, you can swap him and Willie around if you need to. But got to be in the lineup every single day.
Starting point is 00:08:48 And you've figured that out this year, that Ali was like, yeah, yeah, there's no way we're taking him out anymore. this is where he belongs. He's earned it. And the runway, which I hate bringing that up, you know this, but the runway, it worked for Alec Berlinson. We found out what exactly he is. And that answer is probably a Silver Slugger Award winning hitter. So once again, November 7th, winners will be announced. Up next, we're going to do cardinal confessions about free agent pitchers. Had discussion about some of the guys that I like and dislike and all that. So we're going to get into that coming up next with you. Your comments coming up next on Locked on Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Let's be honest, most of us can even name all our financial accounts, let alone what they're worth, between 401K savings and investments. It's easy to lose track. Nobody's going to get upset at you for losing track. It's not an easy thing to do. But the problem is you leave money on the table when you do that. And that's why you need to start using Monarch, an all-in-one personal finance tool that brings your entire financial life together in one clean, easy-to-use interface on your laptop or your phone.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Monarch's visual dashboards and smart tools make it so much easier to understand where your money is going and how to make it work harder for you. It is your money. You should be doing the most with it, not just letting it sit somewhere or forgetting that it exists altogether. Don't let financial opportunities slip through the cracks. Use code locked on MLB. That's one word locked on MLB at monarch.com for 50% off your first year. That's monarch.com code locked on MLB for half off. your first year.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Today's episode also brought to you by price picks every day we make decisions. Some are good, some are bad. But on prize picks, being right can actually get you paid. Not the correct answers that we have out here in the real world. Not all of those get us paid, right? But a price picks, it works. Don't miss the excitement of this football season with prize picks where it's good to be right.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Playing prize picks is a lot of fun. If you haven't tried it yet, very simple to add more excitement to your football, experience, whether it's Thursday night, whether it's Sundays, whether it's Mondays. You just pick more or less on player projections. Like Patrick Mahomes has been on fire recently. He's got all of his weapons back, passing yards, something that you want to look at with Mahomes. Bejan Robinson, my favorite running back in football right now.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Is he going to rush for a touchdown? Odds are, yeah, he's going to score one. He's pretty good. You put those in and you're in the game. I love how quick it is. It's very simple. You make your line up in order in like under a minute. It doesn't take long at all.
Starting point is 00:11:31 They've also added stacks. So if you want to ride it with a player, like, say, a dual threat quarterback like a Omar Jackson, who's coming back. You can do that. You can select his passing yards, rushing yards, and touchdowns all in one lineup. They've also got the injury reboot feature. So if an injury happens early on, it won't count against you. Download the prize picks app today. News code locked on MLB.
Starting point is 00:11:51 You're going to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That's code locked on MLB for $50 in lineups after your first $5 lineup. Prize picks. It's good. to be right. Thanks again for making Locktown Cardinals. You first listen to every day if you enjoy daily Cardinals content. Follow our podcast on X at LO underscore Cardinals. Starting point is 00:12:18 The Cardinals are likely going to dip their toes into the free agent pitching waters this offseason. Odds are, I think they're going to sign at least one guy, at least one guy, maybe even two. And Monday, I went through some of the names that I thought the team might be interested in. And which ones do I think we're going to be, you know, out of their price range. They're not going to give the years to these guys. And we got plenty of feedback on who fans want, don't want,
Starting point is 00:12:46 them to sign this offseason. So it's time for another session of Cardinal Confessions. This is where I read your comments and we have a little discussion about it. So a lot of people writing that they're not going to spend any money whatsoever. No, they will. That's the thing. They got to field the team. You can't just not spend money again. You have to field the team. So I would assume that they're going to take some flyers on a couple of guys that they think will benefit them. Who they are, though, there's some opinions here. First one here. No more injured pitchers. No more four plus ERA pitchers. No more 10 game winner pitchers. The Cardinals need a scuba quality pitcher, even if schemes are 10.
Starting point is 00:13:33 Chandler quality pitcher. No more of the Fettys or minimalist quality pitchers or a team Kent's easily injured type of pitcher. Okay. Well, if it was that easy to get your hands on a scuba and a skeins, everybody would do it. You know that, right? How many of those kind of guys are out there? I mean, you're talking about two of the best, if not the best pitchers in baseball. Those could be the side young winners this year of the American League and National League. Not exactly the easiest thing to go out and get. And the funny part is that scoble might be available via trade this off season. But to get him, you're going to have to part with, I don't know, JJ Weatherhold, Alec Berlinson, Jordan Walker, Quinn Matthews, it's going to take a haul.
Starting point is 00:14:16 And you can get him if you're willing to do that. But the next problem is you got to sign him. Yeah. And he's going to test the pre-agent markers because guess who he's a client of? That's right. Scott Boris. Yay. Like this isn't going to be a pain in the butt for anybody who's trying to get their hands on Terrick Scouble in free agency. So if I'm Detroit, I'm fielding calls on Terrick Scubal because why wouldn't you? You know, because somebody could offer you a crazy package. And if you don't feel like you're going to be able to sign him, then you might want to pull the trigger on that. But if I'm Detroit, I'm, I'm, I'm extending this guy. Like this is arguably the best pitcher in baseball. So give him what he wants, move on, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Skeens is stuck in Pittsburgh until he says he wants out, until he refuses to pitch there for them anymore,
Starting point is 00:15:16 which could be soon if they don't start winning. But it's why the Cardinals are putting an emphasis on player development again. Because they've seen what they've have and what they've been able to put together the last couple of years. and it hasn't been very good. Like the well has been dry. So they're doing it again because acquiring talent like these guys that you mentioned or signing talent like that in free agency. It's so expensive. It's such a risk. And you're also competing with major market teams who just have more resources than you do. And it puts you at a disadvantage. So drafting and developing your own talent. You know, Liam Doyle is the first
Starting point is 00:15:57 top five pick they've had since 1998. Jady Drew was the last one they had. So let's see what they can do with him. Let's see if they can develop him and make him into a scubel or skeins type of guy. Make him into a stud. But you also got to be able to hit on lower picks too because scuba wasn't a first round pick. Scooble was a ninth round pick. So you got to be able to develop some of these other guys, the Eshon Henderson's and the Quinn Matthews and the Mott's and, you know, Some of these other guys, it sucks that there were so many injuries in the minors last year because, you know, it's a cold Robey.
Starting point is 00:16:33 I was so pumped for it. That really bummed me out when he went down. Cooper Jerpy obviously is just an awkward looking pitcher, which is going to cause problems for other teams. You know, Sim Robbersa went down as well. Hince has never been able to stay healthy. I don't know what's going to happen with him. But I get it. I get your frustration.
Starting point is 00:16:55 You don't want, you want a stud. You want a primo top of the line guy. And getting your hands on one of those guys is not easy. So you got to develop him. So he's already, you know, under your control. You know what I'm saying? So that's what hopefully they'll be able to do with Liam Doyle. He's the first one we're looking at.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Walker Bueller pitch for the Dodgers in Phillies. He seems like a cardinal pick to me. I wouldn't mind a one-year deal for Max Scherzer, but a trade would probably be an avenue as well. You know, Bueller is an interesting guy. he's an option. I wonder if someone overpays for him just because of his name, just on his name alone.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Because three years ago, something like that, he looked like he was going to be one of the best right-handers in baseball. And then the injuries got him. And he's still kind of coming back from that, did not have a good experience with the Boston Red Sox, was much better in Philly. he's a guy I'd certainly reach out to in contact and gauge his interest, especially after how much better he looked in Philly after getting dropped by Boston.
Starting point is 00:18:05 So that's a guy. But again, I think because of the name Walker Bueller, people are going to be willing to overpay for him. It's just kind of how it is. He's a known commodity who was very, very good. Not that long ago. The Max Scher's stuff, I think, is just a pipe dream, to be honest, If the Cardinals were at a more competitive spot right now, I think it would be more realistic.
Starting point is 00:18:29 But I think Max loves winning too much. He's not trying to go to some mediocre team, which is what the Cardinals are right now here in the twilight of his career. It just doesn't seem like something he'd do. I could be wrong. Maybe the idea of coming home and playing for St. Louis is something he wants to accomplish before he retires. I just wouldn't hold my breath. I wouldn't hold my breath. Here's another one.
Starting point is 00:18:52 My wish list. Trade Sunny Gray, get what you can. Buy a ticket for Miles Michaelis to retirement. Sign one of the free agents, Dustin May, put Palante back in the bullpen with May, Libertor, Kyle Leahy, Michael McGreevy, Quinn Matthews, add Doyle to the mix plus Henderson, Robes, bullpen, Joe, Palante, King, Fonson, O'Brien, plus two more.
Starting point is 00:19:15 If you're going to be average, be average young. Well, Robesah and Roby are out. So scratch them off your list because they got hurt last year. And they're probably, Robey, I think for sure, is out for the year. Robbers, I would assume is as well. So they can't do you much good. As far as the free agents goes, I love me some Dustin May. I'm a fan of him, dude.
Starting point is 00:19:42 This is what you look. The fact that he gets injured a lot sucks. He's the injured guy that I would take a chance on, though, because I've seen how nasty he can be. like the movement, the arm angles. It's just like he just looks so difficult to hit to me. Came up with a great organization and the Dodgers. The injuries are a real thing, though.
Starting point is 00:20:05 You know, a lot of elbow problems at his career. Tommy John in 21, flexor tendon surgery in 23. Had some forearm stuff going on this past year. Even had an esophagus injury. And I know it's a freak injury, but that's how injury prone this dude is. Had an esophagus injury, which had to be. scary as hell. Apparently a piece of salad got stuck in his throat. He had to have emergency throat surgery. I mean, imagine just eating a salad and getting injured, injured eating a salad.
Starting point is 00:20:33 That's what happened to Dustin May. He's a risk, but 28 years old made a career high 23 starts this past year. He's a lottery tick for sure that I think is worth taking a chance on. I would sign up for some Dustin May. That's just me, though. I've also, you know, said, hey, you should go sign this injury risk guy, and maybe it doesn't work out so much. You know, I was nervous about Carlos Rodan,
Starting point is 00:21:05 Tyler Glassnow when we were talking about those guys. And Rodon stayed relatively healthy, I think, since he's been to New York. But, you know, Glassnow has been in and out of the lineup for the Dodgers. But it's a pitch. pitching man. The risk is always going to be there on pitchers. There's nobody where you can just say he will never get hurt. It doesn't happen. People always get hurt some way, some shape or form. You know, whether it's, you know, you want to stay away from the elbows and the arm issues and the shoulder problems. But, you know, there's obliques and there's hamstrings. And it just, there's a lot that can go wrong with these starting pitchers. So, I mean, there's nobody that's just like risk free that there's no doubt they'll never get hurt. Doesn't exist. It's not real. So. So that's one of the guys. If I had to choose between Bueller or Dustin May,
Starting point is 00:21:54 I think I'd shoot my shot with Dustin May. That's just me, though. But let me know down below what you guys think. Thank you for all of the comments. There's tons of them, which I can't get to all of them every episode, but we'll keep rolling them out in Cardinal Confessions. So keep responding to each episode. Maybe we'll use your comment next time.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Up next, O'Tonnie had an NLCS MVP winning performance. One game. What MVP in game four to sweep the brewers? And it got me kind of thinking, you know what? I want to get nostalgic. I want to go down memory lane and go look at some Cardinal games from the past. Remember some of them that I've witnessed growing up that, you know, we're just so impressive. So we're going to go through a couple of those coming up next on Locked on Cardinals.

I get all worked up. But I'm excited about the stuff we're talking about. Otani had one of the greatest games you'll ever see. Six shutout innings, 10 Ks, hits three home runs, no big deal. This is the Dodgers number four pitcher, by the way.
Starting point is 00:25:39 Perhaps the best game you'll ever see in baseball history because nobody pitches and hits. So to go off like that and do it in the playoffs, it's unheard of, wins the NLCS MVP because of it. But it got me thinking about the best offensive games that I've ever seen, that I've ever witnessed as a Cardinal fan. And the first one that came to mind was Albert Pooleholds against the Cubs. July 20th, 2004, Cardinals are getting clobbered. Like, it was 7 to 1 early on.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Like Matt Morris was on the mound, and the Cubs were just raking him, just crushing him. And it seemed like it was going to be one of those days. And it's so disappointing, especially against the Cubs, you're like, oh, my gosh, it's good. We got nine innings of this. They're down eight to two in the sixth inning. Everything feels like it's lost.
Starting point is 00:26:29 But then the Cardinals come back to life. And they do it behind Albert Pooholes, who ends up going five for five, four runs scored, three home runs, five RBIs. They beat the Cubbies by a score of 11 to 8. It was beautiful, especially because it's against the Cubs. And that made me think of the Matt Carpenter game against the Cubs on that rainy day. I didn't realize this until I looked it up. make sure also took place on a July 20th. But this one was in 2018.
Starting point is 00:27:01 But how weird is that? They both were on July 20th. But Matt Carpenter goes five for five, three home runs, two doubles. So he has five extra base hits, seven RBIs and 16 total bases in the game. And that was the year where Carpenter was making the salsa. And out of nowhere, ends up hitting 36. home runs that year. Like it was unreal.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Like we were watching and we're like, what? Because we're all talking about how like, man, this carboner guy, maybe that's not going to work out because he had a really bad start to the year. And then just goes on a tear. But that was a good day because, and it was a weird day because it was like rainy.
Starting point is 00:27:45 And then it would like lighten up and everything would be fine. And it'd be rainy again. Like it was just looked like it was going to be a miserable day. It was miserable for the Cubs. I'll tell you that because the cardals ended up beating the snout out of them that day. But as great as those two games were, because then I'm thinking, all right, three home run games, hold on a second.
Starting point is 00:28:01 Mark Whitten. As great as those two days wore, and they're extra special because they were against the Cubs. But the one that sticks out to me the most was the game that was put together by hard hit and Mark Whitten against the Cincinnati Reds. And this was on September 7, 1993. The teams played a doubleheader that day. Reds won the first one, 14 to 13. Cardinals missed their extra point on the second touchdown, lost 14 to 13. Witten played in that game, and he went 0 for 4 with one RBI.
Starting point is 00:28:35 So he wasn't even a part of 13 runs in game one. Things were very different in game two. And Winton went bonkers going four for five with four home runs in 12 RBIs. He had a grand slam in the first inning, three run home runs in the sixth and the seventh inning, off the same pitcher, Mike Anderson. and then a two-run shot off of Rob Dibble in the ninth inning. I mean, it was unbelievable. And there's footage of it.
Starting point is 00:29:03 You can go look it up. And it's funny because you're looking at, you know, it was a late-night game by the time the second game had started because it had been rainy that day in Cincinnati. You get to see old Riverfront Stadium, you know, and there's not a lot of people in the stands. But they were all on their feet for Mark Whitten, that one, even if they weren't for the Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:29:21 That was like, that's crazy. four home runs and 12 RBIs in one game. Nuts. Before my time, Jim Bottomley apparently had a big game, 12 RBIs for the Cardinals in a game against the Brooklyn Robbins in 1924, 6 for 6 with 12 ribbies. That's a pretty good day. Stan Musial, obviously I wasn't around for this one, but I remember seeing the clips of, you know, like the newspaper clippings of him
Starting point is 00:29:47 hitting five home runs during a double hitter against the New York Giants. That took place in 1954, hit three home runs. and drove in six in game one, two more home runs, three more RBIs in game two, huge day for the man. I do remember Fernando Tatis, senior, hitting the two grand slams off Chanho Park in the same inning back in 1999. That was nuts because that's probably never going to happen again. They showed him, I remember this too. They showed his career stats. He had never hit a grand slam in his career, not like Fernando Tatis had much of a career, really, before he got to Saylos.
Starting point is 00:30:19 and no grand slams to that point doubles it in the same inning hitting not one but two grand slams off the same pitcher, which would never happen these days. That's why I don't think it'll ever happen again because they'll take the guy out before that ever happens. So crazy stuff. Ivan Herrera, three home run game this year against the Angels early on in April. There's been some good ones. There's been some good ones.
Starting point is 00:30:48 And I know there's some good pitching ones out there and maybe we'll run through those at some point. But those are the top ones that I remember offensively. I'm sure I'm missing a few that you know of. So let me know in the comments some of your favorite offensive days for a Cardinal. And we can talk about them in the comments section. But like I said, I'm sure I'm missing a bunch. But those are the ones that I thought of.
