The St. Louis Cardinals were able to come out on top and earn their first sweep of the season in Houston.
Thanks to the hometown hero, Mason Win. This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network,
your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Hafford. And yes, I am in the ugly shirt once again.
And that is in celebration of what we just saw in Houston.
Today's episode brought to you by Fandall.
Right now new customers can bet just $5 and get $250 in bonus bets if your first bet wins at
pandal.com to get started.
On today's show, the new MLB power rankings have dropped and the Cardinals have jumped quite a bit
since their last ranking.
But I still have some questions about the ranking system that these people are using right now at MLB.
dot pitching prospect. Liam Doyle had another start and it went so much better, so much better than
his other one. So maybe all of us can, you know, take a step back from the ledge when it comes to
the future of Liam Doyle. Speaking of pitching, the Cardinals back of the bullpen, the untouchables,
as I was starting to call them, finally got touched on Sunday. But before we can get to that point
of Sunday's game, we got to start with the guy that, at least in my opinion, that, at least in my
opinion had the best weekend of anyone in a Cardinals uniform, and that was Texas's own
Mason Blaze win. Kingwood High School Zone put on quite a show for his friends and family this
weekend in Houston, culminating in the game winning hit and extra innings that sent the Cardinals
for the first sweep of the season. It also gave them a five-game winning streak, which is currently
tied for the longest streak in Major League Baseball, along with the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago
go cubs.
On Sunday, though, Mason got the first hit of the day for the Cardinals against the
Astros pitcher Mike Burroughs, who was carving up our boys early on in the first five
innings.
There wasn't a whole lot going on for the Cardinals offense.
It was pretty dull.
And Burroughs was just pumping strikes.
That's what he was doing.
He was just throwing it over the plate.
And guys were either taking or swinging and missing or just missing their pitch in general.
If they were chasing, it was that change up low.
they were going after. So things weren't, weren't going so well. But Mason Wend gets the two
out single to left in that fifth inning. And that's when things finally got cooking for the
Cardinals. Nathan Church works a walk, my boy. Pedro Pahas taps at infield single over to third.
And because he's got wheels from how, no, it was just perfectly placed. He was safe at first base,
though. And then Victor Scott works a walk where he used the challenge system to try to get ball for.
And it ended up being a strike. And then the next pitch, Burles, throws way inside.
for ball four. And that brings in the tying run. So, you know, using the system there,
it didn't work as far as getting the call to go the Cardle's way, but it might have messed
with Burles a little bit who had to wait around and get the, the call confirmed and ends up
not even close on the next picture to Victor Scott. So perhaps that was something that got in
his head. Next up is our rookie JJ Weatherhold, who probably rips a slider up in the zone for a
two-run single. And just like that, Burles goes from throwing a perfect game to taking that
slow stroll to the dugout losing three to one.
That's how quickly things can change in the game of baseball.
The Astros bring in O'Kert, who was greeted by Yvonne Herrera, who hits an RBI single.
That makes it four to one.
Sixth inning, Mason, one comes back up, hit number two of the day.
Single to right field got stranded after that one.
But at this point, we're thinking things are looking pretty good, right?
The way things were setting up for the Cardinals and Ollie and his bullpen felt pretty confident going into things.
You know, Cardinals have a nice lead at this point.
Even Ryan Stanick had a clean inning, okay?
And that never happens.
Stannick comes in, gets saved by the Nathan Church catch,
but he has a clean inning.
And you still got Jojo and Riley,
the untouchables on standby.
They're ready to rock.
What could possibly go wrong?
Well, as it turns out, plenty.
First, that demon known as Jordon Alvarez,
wouldn't stop hitting home runs this weekend.
Okay, whatever the game plan was against him,
just go ahead, just rip that sucker up,
wipe your butt with it, flush it down the toilet,
because it did not work.
It didn't matter what you threw it, Your Don Alvarez,
because the guy was going to hit a home run in every game.
He did.
Alvarez sparks the comeback, third home run of the series.
I tweeted it when it happened that, you know,
he's starting to get me the PTSD of David Ortiz
in that 2013 World Series when he hit six.
68 against the Cardinals and won the World Series MVP.
It didn't matter what they threw up there at him.
He was going to get ahead.
It was just inevitable.
And that's exactly what Yoran Alvarez looked like in this series.
Like it just felt like every time he was up there,
he was going to do something eventually.
So he makes it four to two with the dinger off of Jojo.
That's followed by a single by Altuve.
Then I'll walk to Christian Walker.
And now we got the go ahead run coming to the plate.
Now we're, we're starting to, starting to squirm a little bit.
We're like, okay, this is uncomfortable.
But Ali plays the matchups and he goes to his closer, Riley O'Brien,
who immediately throws a wild bitch to sending the runners up to second and third base,
aka scoring position.
You don't want them there where a simple single can just tie the game up.
Wouldn't you know it?
Isak Parades plugs the gap in right center.
Nice cutoff, by the way, by Jordan Walker to get that ball cut it off.
But that ties it up.
Leight is gone, game is tied, and now the two big guys in your bullpen, who you had the most confidence and have sharded the bed, so to speak, and we start back at zeros.
Now, no relievers are going to be perfect throughout a season.
The ones who almost are perfect throughout an entire season usually when a Sigh young for their efforts, guys like Dennis Akersley and Eric Gagne, Bruce Souter, Raleigh, Fingers.
and at no point did any of us believe that, you know,
Jojo and Riley weren't going to get hit eventually.
We didn't think they were going to be one of those guys,
but sure as hell didn't expect it to happen in the same game.
Like, did they have to, you know, dogpiled together on that
and have one bad game together?
Like, yeah, that didn't need that to happen.
But the beauty of this game and of this team so far is they stay resilient.
And they don't quit.
when the chips fall into the way they did.
And then what is JJ always said when we get punched in the mouth?
You know, we got to be able to get back up and come back.
So they get punched in the mouth there.
In the eighth inning, the game gets tied up.
And the Astros come back.
You know, credit to Riley O'Brien after, you know,
things got a little there for a second.
He comes back.
He's able to get out of the inning.
Goes off and has an outstanding ninth inning.
It looks great, mowed right through the guys.
So off the extras we go.
Mason Wynn would step up and save the day. Herrera starts at second base. There's an error on
Bryce Matthews who also got picked off to end the eighth inning. So not a great day for that dude.
Ramon Urius is hit by a pitch, which brings up Mason Wynn with the base is juiced,
one out, and he delivers a shot right down the left field line. It clears the bases. Mason ends up
on second base. Cardinals jump out to his seven to four lead in extra innings. And then you use
the combo of Justin Brule and Gordon Grecefo. They allow a run in that.
10th inning, but they finish it off to pick up the 7 to 5 victory. Mason Wynn finishes the day,
going 3 for 5 with three Rebys, two runs scored, extended his hitting streak to six games.
You know, coming into the series, Mason Wynn was one of the most disappointing offensive
guys the Cardinals I've had this year. He was hitting 188. He had no home runs. He had one RBI.
And in this series alone, in front of his friends and family, he goes five for 15, hits his first
Stinger drives in seven in this series and pushes his average up to 222.
After the game, he called the series amazing because, of course, he said being able to do it
in Houston is super special to him.
He's just super psyched about the weekend, as he should be.
That was impressive.
And just about any time they needed somebody to come up clutch, Mason Wynn was standing in
the box and he was able to come through.
Like I said, in our last episode, if this is the Mason win we're going to get when his
friends and family are there in attendance watching him, then maybe we all need, you know,
invest in sending the friends and family to as many games as possible because that's a
Mason one I want to see moving forward. That was fun. Cardinals get the sweep, leaves them with
a 13 and 8 record, the five games above 500. And apparently it's the first time they've been
five games above 500 after the first 21 games of the season since 2018. So it's not like this is
normal. This is the year 2026 now. So 2018, it's been a bit. It's been a bit. They also improved
to five and no and extra innings, which is very impressive. You love to see that. So good stuff from
the Cardinals coming back because they were down one, one nothing early on this one. They did not
score first. And they had to come back. They take the lead. They get punched in the mouth.
They come back, take the lead right away in the 10th inning. So outstanding stuff all around from
everybody. Nothing is ever going to be perfect for this team where we're learning that the hard way.
It doesn't matter who it is.
We can't just depend on one or two guys all the time.
It's going to take a team effort, and that's what you saw in this game.
Three stars of the game.
I got them for you coming up next here on Lockdown Cardinals.
The NBA playoffs are here where every possession, it matters.
Every matchup is magnified, and every game can swing a series.
Right now, Vandal is giving new customers a great way to get in on the action.
It's going to make the NBA playoffs that much more fun for you.
And nobody's saying you got to throw down your entire paycheck, okay?
No, you don't have to.
do that. You don't have to do that to have fun on Fando. What you do is you bet just $5.
All right. What is that? The price of a grande coffee these days, $5, you get $250 in bonus
bets if your first bet wins. Then you use those bonus bets to expand your experience and give
yourself a chance to win even more. Now, the app's going to make it real easy for you to follow
the action. They're going to get you the player stats, the trends, the matchups. It's all in one
place there on the Fandole app. And during the playoffs,
that extra insight, you know, it's really going to matter and help you guys out when you're looking
at stars and role players and key moments that you want to put a little something, something on.
It just makes the entire playoff experience when it comes to the NBA more engaging from start
to finish. So whether you're going with the thunder, the Spurs, Victor Wimbledyama is an absolute
freak. He might be the guy that I like watching the most in the NBA. It's just crazy
watching this huge man out there shooting threes, blocking shots.
He's disgustingly good.
Piston, Celtics, which teams and players do you believe in here in the NBA playoffs now that
they're underway?
Let's find out together.
Head to fandole.com to get started.
Fandall, play your game.

of this particular game. Big knocking that 10th inning to regain the lead. But I've got three
other names. I want to go along with him. We're going to start with starting pitching Matthew
Libertor, who had himself a nice hobby, man.
One of his best outings of the year.
He lasts six innings.
He allows just one run on three hits.
He walked to.
He struck out four, did it all in 82 pitches.
I really like what we saw from Libby.
He was still looking for that elusive first one of the season after the bullpen gave up the lead.
Libby has had three games now.
And I know it feels like Libby hasn't pitched that well, but it depends on how you look at it.
Because he's had three games now that he's given.
up just one earned run against. One, but he hasn't factored in the result yet. Now, what's most
important, though, is the team winning when Matthew Libertor is on the mound? The answer is yes.
The team is four and one in games that he starts, which that's, you know, that's what we're here
for. His record be damned. You know, it sucks. He probably deserves to have a couple of Ws already,
but the team is winning. The team is winning. He's gone at least five innings in each start.
right, which I know some of the old school baseball fans would be like, five innings is weak.
These guys should be going six, seven, eight.
And I get it.
I do.
But that's just not the way the game is these days.
So five and six is a big deal.
He's done five in every start.
It has a combined ERA of 3.67, the ERA plus at 104.
Nothing spectacular, but that's 4% above league average.
You'll take it.
It's 3.67 E.R puts them just outside the top 25 in the National League.
at number 26. It's not spectacular. He's not somebody that goes out there and just like, wow,
dude, this guy is just lights out. He's not, but he's pitching well, and he's getting the job done
for now, for now. And it's one of the reasons why maybe the Cardinals ranking is kind of where it is
where these guys aren't really believing in this starting rotation just yet, which I can understand,
but we'll get to the power rankings a little bit. Next start of the game goes to J.J. Weatherholt,
who, by the way, so we use the service that gives us the pictures and everything.
They take terrible pictures of J.J. Weatherholt every time.
It's hard to find one of like his face.
Like if you're watching on video right now, like, look,
the ball is like in between his crotch right now because I'm assuming this is one of the ones
where he got hit by a pitch, but I don't know what it is.
They take terrible pictures of J.J. Weatherholt.
It's kind of annoying.
But anyway, he finishes the game one for four, but that one hit, huge.
Played a two on his two out base hit to right.
He also got hit by a pitch again.
That's the fourth consecutive game in which he has been hit by a pitch that ties the team record held by Joe Cunningham in 1961.
And then Cardinals coach John Jay had it happen to him in 2012.
In the three games in Houston, the Cardinals were hit by a pitch six different times.
Luckily, no injuries.
Five of those runners would come around to score.
So thank you, Houston, for doing us a favor and putting those people on.
And that's the thing. Good teams are going to take advantage of mistakes from the other team.
And if you're going to keep giving us free base runners, the Cardinals have proven at least so far in
26 that they're going to take advantage of those situations.
So for the weekend, JJ 3 for 10, he walked twice, hit by a pitch three times.
He scores four times.
The on-base percentage is now up to 381 for the whole season.
But as a lead-off hitter, which I forgot he hit somewhere else.
I guess there was a game that he did not bat leadoff and he was down like seventh.
Maybe he came into the game late or something.
Either way, lead off hitter, he's up to a 389 on base percentage,
which is the fourth best on base percentage among leadoff hitters in the National League
with at least 45 at bats.
There's some other stragglers that have had like, you know, eight to ten at bats or
whatever, which is a super small sample size.
But when I narrowed it down and I'm like, all right, let's some people who've actually
been there for a few games.
45 the bats, he's fourth behind Bryce Terang from the Brewers,
Nico Horner of the Cubs, and that Shohei Otani guy out in L.A.
So not bad company that J.J. Weatherholt is keeping as a lead-off hitter in Major League Baseball.
My last start for Sunday's game, I'm giving it to Nathan Church and you can't stop me.
Didn't do a whole lot offensively. He took the one walk, ended up scoring.
That was during the Cardinals rally in the fifth inning.
but he also made two outstanding catches in left field to save hits.
And you can't overlook stuff like that.
The Cardinals defense, which had a rough inning,
which allowed the first run to start and the first run to score in the first place for Houston.
But overall, the season, this defense has been so good, best in Major League Baseball.
And yeah, you can look at Nathan Church and you can look at Victor Scott.
And you can go, man, your offense is not where we want it to be.
But look what they're doing defensively to help this team.
They're contributing in different ways.
and Nathan Church was able to do it with two massive, massive catches in this game,
one up against the wall in that second inning on the Cam Smith fly ball,
which I don't know about you when I left the bat.
I thought that was going to be 10 rows deep into the Crawford boxes.
I thought that was way gone.
And it just died in front of the wall.
And Nathan Church right there able to bang into the wall, make the catch,
which was really nice, saved extra bases there.
And then as I mentioned earlier, he made that diving catch in the 7th,
seventh inning to make the final out when Stanick was in.
So good stuff from Nathan Church, contributing in any way he can.
Jordan Walker extended his hit streak to 14 games in this one with a double in the eighth
inning.
It was held homeless for the series.
Only had one RBI, six strikeouts and 15 played appearances.
And that's not so much as a knock on Jordan Walker right now that it is a pat on the
back for the rest of the team who provided offense with.
without big number 18 in the middle of the lineup,
having to do all that much.
And they still come away with three wins.
So this is baseball.
When you have a lineup, guys are up and down.
Nobody's that hot at the same time.
The hall am's never going to be that way.
And now the Jordan Walker has cooled off a little bit.
You've got other people stepping up in his spot.
And that's what you do.
You pick each other up.
After the game, Ollie spoke about this,
saying that, you know, you want to be a club that has the ability to win
in a lot of different ways.
You don't want to be just dependent on one thing.
You don't want to be a one-trick pony is what he's trying to say.
He says, I think we showed the ability yesterday with a couple home runs,
talking about Saturday's game, but also to manufacture runs,
be aggressive on the bases, be smart while being aggressive,
and then playing good defense where we're going to find a way every night
to put pressure on you and peek up after nine to see where we're at.
The club has done a really nice job of that.
When you think about what you want Cardinal baseball to be,
and what does it usually come down?
down to fundamentals, defense, pitching.
Like, it never really has been about, you know, outslugging opponents all the time.
Sure, we had some years where you had a lot of big boppers in the lineup,
the Albuyls, Scott Roll and Jim Edmonds, Mark McGuire, you know the names.
I don't have to repeat them all for you.
But when it comes to the foundation of Cardinals baseball, it's usually the small things.
Do the small things right.
Run the base is smart.
pitching be strong doesn't have to be the best of the best of the world but be solid don't hurt
yourself right it's the little things that we appreciated it's cardinals fans and that's what this
team is doing so far which has got them five games over 500 like nobody's looking at this team and going
wow look how amazing they are nobody's looking at them like that they don't have superstars just
popping off the page but they're playing good team baseball and it's showing and it's showing and
the win-loss column. Cardinals sweep the three-game series against the strode at Houston for the first
time since April of 2004. They swept the Astros of a two-game set in Houston in August of 2016
and in a three-game series in St. Louis in September of 2012. So it's not like this happens a ton.
So this was great. Five-game winning streak, long as the Cardinals have had since they won nine in a row
in May of 2025 up next. How did Liam Doyle and Hunter Aubin starts go on Sunday? And
the new power rankings are out.
And L Central is well represented,
but they're in a goofy order.
So we'll discuss all of that coming up next on Locked on Cardinals.
Thank you again for making Locked on Cardinals,
your first list of the day.
Thank you for making Lockdown on the number one sports podcast network.
Thank you to the Cardinals for allowing me to wear my ugly series winning shirt once again.
I'm not to wash this sucker.
We've worn it a lot recently, which has been great.
That's not a complaint.
That's just an observation that I am.
probably going to have to put this in the laundry eventually. Cardinal stop pitching prospect,
Liam Doyle, or would that ruin the juju, the good juju that we got going on? Okay, maybe I
shouldn't. You know, but guys will wear the same dirty socks and stuff. When they're winning,
maybe we don't, maybe we don't. I don't know. Let me know in the comment section,
but Cardinal stop pitching prospect Liam Doyle, we know has had two really rough starts
so far here in 2026. It has not gone well. Things went much smoother. Happy to report
that things went much better for him on Sunday. Four innings, he allows one run, two hits,
one walk, five strikeouts. That's more like it. Three of the strikeouts when I was watching the,
the tape appeared to be on sliders, two of them on fastballs, but very encouraging results for
Doyle after two very ugly ones to begin the campaign. I'm sure, you know, he had used to something
like that. It's probably very frustrating for him. Again, we know that he's been working on the slider,
trying to make that secondary pitch even that much better.
So he's probably throwing a lot more than he really needs to just because he's working on it.
He knows he's got the fastball in his back pocket.
That's not something that they're worried about.
But it was good to see him progress.
That's what you want.
Hunter Dobbins made his fourth rehab start on Sunday afternoon.
The outing, unfortunately, cut short by a 53-minute B delay in the top of the fourth inning.
This happens.
It seems like every summer, we're a little early on it.
house. It's in April, but there's like an infestation of bees, whether it's at the major
league level, minor league level, and things have to stop because of it happening. And I guess
that's what happened in this start for Memphis. 53 minute bee delay in the top of the fourth
inning. He had allowed three runs on six hits, walked one, struck out three thus far in three
and three-and-third innings before he got pulled. So it wasn't a great outing. But you got to keep
this guy healthy because when the calendar flips to May, pretty sure Hunter Dobbins is coming up.
We're going to have a six-man rotation. Memphis, trailed by a run entering the bottom of the eighth
inning. Catcher Leo Bernal smacked a solo home run to lead to left, the lead off the inning.
Ties the game finishes the game three for three, three ribby's. He had a walk in a 65 victory
for Memphis plays Jordan continues to swing it well, two for four, two ribbyes, hitting
353 on the season. That's fifth best in the international league. Brian Torres, you know how,
I like my little guys, right?
You know, like I'm a big fan and I know what you're going to get, man.
Bryce Terang, Nico Horn.
These are the guys I dig.
I appreciate these guys.
Brian Torres, one of them guys.
Only 5'7 hitting 370 so far on the season for Memphis.
Third best in the league.
And if you think that's good, his on base percentage is 508.
Half the time he's on base for Memphis.
First in the international league in that category as well.
MLB power rankings.
This was interesting.
And I'm not totally sure who votes on this and how they do it.
At the top, you got the Dodgers, the Braves, the Padres, and the Yankees.
Now, the Dodgers, Braves, and Padres, they've all got 15 wins, which totally makes sense.
The Yankees are 13 to 9, but they get the number four spot.
Whatever.
I don't care.
Then things get a little goofy for me.
because the NL Central, which we know has been, as far as records, the best in the league so far,
the NL Central teams start getting listed.
But it isn't even the team that's in first place or even in second place in the division right now.
That's the first one listed.
The pirates come in at number five despite being in third place in the division.
Okay.
Okay.
I got it.
You guys got, you know, I want to use a bad word here,
but you guys got some intimacy for Paul Skeens and company.
Okay.
All right.
They're number five, sure.
Then the Brewers show up at number seven.
They're tied for fourth place in this division at 12 and 9.
They're tied with the Cups who then come in at number eight.
So you've got the third place team.
and the fourth and the fifth place teams.
So third and then they're tied for fourth,
but tied for last.
You could say it that way too.
So you got those two teams ranked higher
than the two teams ahead of them.
Reds come in at number nine.
And then the Cardinals,
who have the fifth highest winning percentage in baseball,
coming in at number 14 in the rankings,
which is six spots up from where they were last week
when they were number 20.
if that doesn't tell you what the national narrative about their feelings towards the Cardinals is,
I don't know what does.
And I get it.
I do get it.
I think we're all a little shocked at how well the team has jelled so far here early on in the season.
And people want to see more.
They want to see more of it before they start to believe in them.
And that's fair.
That's fair.
Doesn't mean I have to like it, but it's fair.
Critics and fans remain skeptical.
I get it.
They should be.
But as I've said before, it has sure been a lot of fun watching these guys, play so far,
do the little things right, play good defense, come up with the clutch hits.
And that's really what most of us wanted out of this season.
We knew things weren't going to be great.
We knew there would be struggles.
It's a super young team.
Young is starting roster in Major League Baseball.
We know they're not a complete team by any means.
Spent little to no money whatsoever to go out and fill any gaps that they had.
what we wanted to see from this team was effort.
We wanted to see energy, fundamentals, clean baseball,
good base running, stuff like that, you know, things I mentioned earlier,
and an enthusiasm for this sport again,
which I felt was lacking the last couple of seasons.
It just was just a dull, just kind of mundane feel about everything that was going on.
And I don't get that this year.
with the young guys taking on the big roles on the team,
it's been much more energetic, a lot more fun.
There's not a lot of quit at all.
Every game you're watching until the very end,
because you don't know what the hell's going to happen.
Could be good, could be bad.
It's been more good than bad so far through the first 21 games of the season.
Let's keep it going.
Let's keep this mojo going.
Boys are in Miami, three games beginning tonight.
Michael McGreevy, your scheduled starter against Ritey Max Meyer,
who's got a lot of swinging mess, so be on the lookout for that.
But first pitch will be at 540 St. Louis time.
Again, five-game winning streak, half game behind the Reds in the NL Central,
fifth best winning percentage in baseball.
It's fun.
It's a lot of fun to watch so far.
And we can nitpick all we want and point, well, this guy's not good enough and that guy's not good enough.
No roster is perfect.
None of them are.
Not even the Dodgers.
You can poke holes at things that they got, but they're winning.
And that's what's most important.
So I'm hoping you're enjoying it like me.
