This is a show serving Cardinal Nation
and giving the best fans of baseball.
All of the info about the birds on the bat.
All right.
Well, we're in a good mood because things went well.
Cardinals win.
The Blues won.
It's a good day to be a St. Louis sports fan.
Mother Nature delayed things a little bit,
a little bit for opening day Bush Stadium,
but eventually the Cardinals did take the field on Thursday
for their opening day game against the Minnesota Twins.
And the first thing I want to talk about when it comes to this particular game,
I want to focus on Sunny Gray.
Right away, Sunny Gray,
because Sunny Gray had one of the ugliest spring trainings that I can remember
for a guy that is expected to be a number one pitcher on this staff.
It was awful.
Nothing was going this man's way.
A lot of hits, a lot of home runs, a lot of runs in general.
And I, like many fans, was pretty darned concerned.
Pretty darned concerned.
And I'm not saying that what happened on Thursday is just going to wash all of that away.
But you saw the bad half last year.
Then there's, you know, the, the, the reportings of the pain killing ejection that he got.
And you see that his VLO is down a little bit to start the year.
He's a year older.
So I don't think it was crazy to be concerned about him.
Now, granted, this is just one game.
It's one game.
No need to get overly excited about anything that happened in this one and just be like,
all right, we're all set.
Everything's fine.
That's not really the case.
But what we saw today was a bit more comforting.
Let's put it that way to see Sunny go out there and pitch a solid five innings.
His games in spring, obviously, they were awkward, right?
because he kept getting pulled in the innings that he was pitching because a lot of a
times he was getting shelled and his pitch count kept going up and up and they would keep
pulling him in the middle of an inning.
So if he was getting into trouble in these games in the spring, he didn't ever have to pull
himself out of it.
They were just like, all right, well, we'll take you out.
We'll bring in one of the minor league guys and we'll let him deal with this mess.
but regular seasons here, no one's coming to rescue you.
You're on your own.
And after a quick first inning, there he was in the second with his back against the wall.
He had an eight pitch at bat by Trevor Larnock to lead off the inning.
And that ended up in a single.
By the way, Larnick, I really like that dude's swing.
That dude, I see why he was a first round pick.
Beautiful swing.
Sunny then gets a pop-up.
And then there's a single by Thai France, who's trying to put his career back together.
Willie Castro works a seven pitch walk.
And now you've got the bases juiced with one out.
And this is where things could have gotten out of hand.
Like in the spring games, this is where Sonny gives up a double or grand slam or something crazy happens.
And all of a sudden, cardinals are in a hole, right?
And this time around, though, Sonny's able to wiggle out of it.
It's a strikeout of Miranda, and then he gets former Cardinal Harrison Bader to pop out to Contreras,
which was kind of a funny play because I honestly didn't notice it when it actually happened.
I just saw him make the catch, but they mentioned it online that Contreras like flipped his hat off
like he would his old catcher's mask in helmet.
He like took it off and then chased for the foul ball.
I guess old habits die hard, but it was a nice snag by Willie to end the ending.
So that was cool to see because if there's one thing you're kind of questioning about Wilson Contreras right now,
it's just is he going to be good enough defensively over at first base.
Sonny had an easy third and fourth inning, struck out the side in the fourth inning.
Fifth inning is where he's got a four to nothing late and things are, you know,
everything's kind of going the Cardinals way at this point.
He gets another strikeout, so he strikes out four in a row at this point.
that he gives up a single and then he hangs a sweeper, which, you know, you hang them,
we bang them is how it said.
And of course, it's to Harrison Bader who plants it into the left field seeds because, of course he did.
Of course.
Seriously, does any other team get burned by former players as much as the St. Louis Cardinals?
Anybody else in all of sports.
I feel like I'd never see it.
And I feel like it doesn't matter what is left in the tank for whatever player that used to play for the Cardinals if they face them, superstar for a couple of games.
It's crazy.
Maybe it's all in my head, but I don't know, it just feels that way.
Anywho, so after the home run, he walks the next hitter and now you've got the siding run at the point.
Once again, a spot where things could really go sideways for you.
but the defense steps up and helps them out.
Brennan Donovan playing second base makes this nifty diving play to his left,
starts this 463 double play to get Sonny out of the inning.
It was awesome.
103.1 off Carlos Correa's bad.
So it wasn't like some gimmee grounder by any means.
And when Victor Scott the second made this team
and was anointed to the starting center fielder.
It allowed Brennan Donovan.
It allowed Newpar to stay over in one of the corners.
So he's going to left because Jordan Walker's got right.
And it allowed Brendan Donovan to take over second base,
which in my opinion is his best defensive position.
And it really solidified that infield.
You know, this is no offense to Nolan Gorman,
who's done a good job switching from third base to become a second baseman.
But I'm not sure he might.
makes that play. I'm not sure if he's over there. He's just a bigger, huskier guy than
Brandon Donovan. And Donovan, being more nimble, was able to make that play. So if you have
Gorman in the lineup playing at second base and Donnie's and left, I don't think that play gets made.
But that would wrap up Sunny's Day. So they get out of the inning, five innings, two runs,
four hits, one being at home run, which continues to be an issue. Give up a lot of them last year.
Give up a lot of them in the spring. Gives up a lot of them in the spring. Gives up a
another one here. Two walks, six strikeouts, including the four in a row, which was when he was really humming.
And, you know, this twins lineup is not murderers row by any means. But after what we saw this spring,
I'll take this type of start from Sunny Gray all day every day. I'm in for that. The offense
also came to play on Thursday with some big days from Flauars Newt Bar, Ivan Herrera, and an unforgettable curtain call.
with Nolan Aronado. This is locked on cardless.
Baseball season is in full swing and there's no better way to get in on the action than with prize picks,
the best place for daily fantasy sports. Now with prize picks, you're going to pick more or less
on at least two player projections. And if you're right, you can win up to 100 times or 1,000
times, actually 1,000 times your cash, whether you're looking at strikeouts, whether you're looking at RBI's,
first inning runs. Like you can really narrowly.
this thing down. Prize picks is going to keep the game exciting. That's what it's all about.
You know, I had a little something, something going on in my game today with the Cardinals.
Got two out of four things. I actually predicted the Tyler O'Neill home run in Baltimore,
which I mean, a lot of people were like, hey, he's going to do that. But I had that.
I had Ivan Herrera getting two hits today. So I had a couple of things, didn't hit on a couple of other
things. But, you know, this week, you've got all these games that you can choose on things to do.
And if you want to go with the Cardinals stuff, you can do it that way. You can do any team in the
league, really fast and simple. Setting up a lineup takes less than 60 seconds. And when you win,
you get that payout quick, it's safe, it's secure. Take advantage of Taco Tuesday,

As always welcome and encouraged,
even the guys who are the negative nancies
and the Debbie Downers who we were dealing with
all game today.
I don't know what it is about people who just don't want to be happy.
They just do not want to be happy about this team right now.
that's fine. That's your prerogative. You want to look at it that way and be negative about things that are
going on. You can do that. But I for one was enjoying the game today and had a good time watching it.
I know everybody was really anxious to see how this offense was going to improve from last season,
where they were near the bottom in a lot of categories. They were, you know, it was, it was rough.
And since ownership made the decision not to spend to improve the roster, which upset a lot of people,
it's up to the guys they already had in house to be better versions of themselves.
It's the only way this team is going to succeed this year.
They're not going to go find some magical hitter or pitcher
and spend a whole lot of money to bring them in.
It's just not going to happen.
Okay?
The talent and the ceiling for some of these guys is real.
Like they've got guys, Jordan Walker, Nolan Gorman, Mason, Wynn,
Ivan Herrera,
Victor Scott the second, all of them are very talented ballplayers.
All right.
Ceilings.
They've got room to grow, obviously.
They're very, very young.
You've got Lars Neupar and Wilson Contreras who have been very good when they're healthy.
They haven't been healthy the last couple years.
No one Aronado.
You've got to have him be the Aronado that is going to the Hall of Fame,
not the guy that we saw last year.
And in this particular game, once again,
Game one, don't get overly excited, but at the same time, you don't have to be negative Nancy about it all.
But in this game, you got to see this offense take a lot of really good at bats, a lot of smart at bats.
Sure, there was a couple duds here and there, but I was impressed with the approach that the Cardinals had on offense in this game.
You saw him bang out 10 hits.
You saw him working counts.
You saw two home runs.
They scored five runs.
It's not a lot of runs,
but this isn't a high-powered offense either.
Five runs is a good day for this offense.
And it all started with the top of the order,
with Lars Neuparland.
And I don't know when the decision to make him
the lead off hitter was decided.
But as long as Newt is healthy,
that's exactly where he belongs.
He's got the ability to work count.
which clearly I'm a big fan of.
I mean, they were making Pablo Lopez work his tail off in those first few
winnings.
Settled in later on and ended up having a decent day.
But early on, like, it was like, is he going to make it to the fourth inning?
Like the way that they were taking pitches and fouling things off.
Lars Duparcan also obviously take walks, not afraid to do that.
He's not overly aggressive where he's afraid to take a walk.
but he also provides some danger with the pop that he possesses.
First inning, he smacks a lead off single.
Then he's gifted second base by a balk where Newt tried to time his break.
The Cardinals did this twice.
He tried to time his breakout so that he could get, you know,
a huge running start to steal second base.
But he was a little early.
But Lopez, who just had a tough time with the runners when they were on early on in this game,
he balks so Lars ends up taking second base
Donovan ends up hitting a ground ball with eyes right up the middle
and Newt scores making it one to nothing.
The Cardinals would never trail in this one.
They were terrible with runners in scoring position last year.
We all know that.
And after Willie struck out in that inning, I was like,
oh boy, here we go again, here we go.
But Donnie does a nice job.
puts the bat on the ball, puts it in play, which is something, when you put it in play,
things can happen, right?
Then in the second inning, Jordan Walker leads off with a single that was just scorched down the line.
It was like 116 off the bat, just a missile down the line.
Harrison Bader, who was playing left field, made a really good play on it to hold Jordan 2 a single.
But then Walker does what Newt did in the previous inning, and he tries the time.
Lopez's delivery to the plate, but this time instead of balking, Lopez steps off and
throws it into center field. Walker is safe at second base. Victor Scott is up at this point,
and to be honest, I thought they were going to bottom over. I really thought that this was a
layup type of decision. And I know Victor Scott swung the bat really well in the spring,
But these games count now.
And I would have loved to see him bunt Walker over to get the runner at third with just one out.
But they let him swing away instead and he pops it up.
Not what you wanted.
Mason Wend grounds out weekly to second base.
It does move the runner over.
But now you're, you know, you got two out, runner at third.
And it feels like the Cardinals are going to waste what was essentially a lead off double.
because of the error they got him to second base with nobody out.
So it felt like that's where we were going.
But Lars Newpar, Lars Newpar to the rescue, down one, two in the count.
And he rips a change up over the wall in right field to make it three to nothing.
Not a bad pitch by Lopez either.
It was a nice change up.
It wasn't in the zone.
It was below the zone.
But I'm sure he wishes that he got it down just a couple of inches more.
But credit Newt for going down and getting it, you know, left handers.
they just had that natural swing where balls down in the zone.
They're able to scoop them and hammer them pretty good.
And Newt didn't miss it.
So 3-0 lead.
We get more clutch hitting in the third inning where Yvonne Herrera,
who's becoming the guy that I am backing 1,000 percent with the offense came through.
But the two out single to right to score Donovan,
who had single to lead off the inning.
It's 4 to nothing at this point.
And everybody's feeling really good.
Then the twins cut the lead to 4 to 3.
you give up the home run to Bader, and then they get a runoff Leahy.
And we all remember the agony of all those one-run games from last year.
Like, I mean, my fingernails are just now kind of back to normal from all of this.
Just chewing my nails last year watching the Cardinals in these one-run games.
Lucky for them last year, they had this outstanding bullpen that hardly ever, ever blew the game.
Like, it just didn't really happen all that much.
after the eighth inning.
I feel like,
I feel like they said on the telegat like 69 and 1
or something ridiculous like that last year.
So going into late in the game,
like you're still like,
like still anything can happen, right?
But thanks to Nolan Aronado,
the boy's got a little extra breathing room.
So we're going to discuss his big moment in the game
coming up next on Lockedown Cardinals.

This was a big day for Nolan Aronado.
A day that maybe people didn't think would ever happen again,
that Nolan Aranaana would be taking the field as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals again on opening day.
You know, it was a, it was a weird offseason for everybody involved.
But there he was.
There he was, member of the St. Louis Cardinals.
And there he was.
In the eighth inning, comes up, one out.
And what do we always say?
your star players have to step up and be your best players in big situations.
It just has to happen.
They have to have that clutch ability.
And Nato, at least on this day, came through.
We didn't see a lot of those situations last year where it happened.
Nobody was coming through last year, really.
But Nato was able to on Thursday.
Momentum was swinging towards the twins.
they'd cut the lead to one and Aronado in the eighth inning,
ropes a 98 mile per hour four seamer that it was up and end,
and he just turns on it and rips it over the left field wall
for a solo shot to make it five to three.
A pitch that probably last year,
if that same pitch had come in, he does not, he doesn't hit it.
He doesn't get a round on it, doesn't get good wood on it.
Maybe he hits it, but he's probably, he's probably jammed,
grounds out weakly to the left side, or he pops it up,
and you see him throw the bat down and look all frustrated.
But this particular swing looked like the Nato of all bat speed.
Look good.
And that's the stuff that he used to have when he was driving the ball for home runs over the left field wall.
Because most of our Nato's home runs, they're not towering bombs.
They're not 445 footers.
They're like what you saw today.
They were lying shots that just go over the wall and left field because that's what he is.
He's a line drive hitter that hits home runs.
And what a moment for Nolan Aronado and the fans,
considering all of this drama that we've talked about
throughout the offseason,
my goodness, was it exhausting to discuss it over and over and over.
But that's what everybody wanted to talk about.
They always wanted to hear what was going on with Nato.
Is he going to be here?
Is he going somewhere else?
I mean, he was one word away from being a Houston Astro.
All he had to say was, yes.
and he was gone.
The deal was in place.
He was not going to be on this team.
But instead he invokes the no trade clause
and despite their best efforts,
another deal never materialized that anybody liked
and instead of starting over in a new city
with a new team, Arnada was back in St. Louis
for another season.
And yes, this screwed up the Cardinals' plans.
Yes, it has created a roster crunch
that is going to cost Alec Berluson and Nolan Gorman.
at bats this year, as long as everybody's healthy.
But, you know, I keep seeing online, there's this narrative that Arnado didn't want to be in St. Louis.
And I'm sorry, but every report says that that is dead wrong.
I've never seen anybody say, yeah, Arnado, he doesn't like St. Louis and he doesn't want to be.
I've never seen anything like that.
The Cardinals came to him.
Every report says the Cardinals came to him and said, this is our direction.
And if you would like for us to try to get something done, we'll do that for you.
And he said, okay.
He said, all right, well, you know, I would love to compete for a World Series.
And if we're not really going all in, you know, maybe there are some spots that could use me.
And I'd be happy at gave him a list of teams.
Nothing, nothing worked out.
Nothing ever came to fruition.
But saying that he doesn't want to be in St. Louis, I'm sorry, but you're wrong.
because he's had multiple chances to leave if he wanted to.
If he didn't want to be in St. Louis, he could have left a couple of times.
He never used any of his opt-outs on the contract after getting traded here from Colorado.
Said, no, I want to be in St. Louis.
Remember him getting just hammered by the media at the All-Star game where they're like,
you know, you didn't opt out and now the Cardinals aren't as good.
Like what's that?
And he's like, no, I want to be in St. Louis.
That was the whole point.
I want to be here.
I want to win there.
Obviously, he didn't take the deal to Houston this offseason.
He could have been gone.
But yet, each time, he finds a way to stay.
And now I can't say that if the Dodgers had came knocking and were like,
hey, we'll take you that he would have turned out a deal to go to his hometown,
play for the Dodgers, but it didn't happen.
He's a cardinal.
And personally, I just thought it was really cool.
to see him not only come through in the clutch,
but to see him having fun,
to see him having fun with the home run
in the situation that just occurred
and the curtain call for those of you on YouTube.
Here's a photo of them.
Doing the Hulk Hogan hand to the ear,
let me hear you type of gesture.
I mean, this was a,
and I saw people,
complaining about this online. I'm like,
he wasn't doing it
to be selfish.
That was him enjoying the moment
and loving the fact
that these fans still
had his back and were cheering
on this accomplishment and how he
just helped the team.
You know, baseball is a game
and games are supposed to be fun.
And Aranada was having some fun
and enjoying what he just did.
And the fans were loving it with him.
And if you want to be a complete turd and a troll online and say he was doing it to show people up and say, cheer louder for a stop.
Stop. Go watch a different sport. Go watch a different team. It was a really cool opening day moment that Nato really appreciated.
And the post-game media scrum, you know, talking about how the cheering and everything, how much that meant to him and his family.
and he was glad that he finally was able to come through
because he didn't get to do it much.
Kind of joked about how he goes,
I don't think I even had a curtain call last year.
So Ali talked about it, how big it was for him
and for Aronado and how much that meant.
You like to see good things happen to good people.
And my hope is that this moment is something
that will catapult Nolan Aronado to a hot start to begin the year.
And that way we could pull all of the stuff that was in the offseason,
just put it behind us completely.
So to run down, let's talk about the offense real quick, to run it down.
New Bar, two for four, two runs, two ribbies, and the dinger, huge day.
Game MVP, in my opinion, Lars New Bar.
Will's contrarerer, shockingly, shockingly had a tough, tough, tough night at the plate.
O for four, three Ks, kind of abusing him with the cutter.
I don't know if he was just overly excited, or he wasn't seen,
the ball. But the cutters, he was, he was missing big time.
Donnie two for four. Ribby had the web gym on the double play. Aronado two for four.
Solo shot. Burley, one for four. Not sure why he's always swinging at the first pitch.
He was doing it last year. It's just what he does, I guess. But man, does it drive me nuts.
In his first three at bats in this game, Alec Berluson saw five pitches. Like, come on, man,
take a few. And finally, in his fourth at bat, uh, he's,
ended up seeing five pitches in that one, but he did fall behind.
He swung at the first one, fell behind 02.
Like, that's not the best approach, at least in my opinion.
But if it's something he and Bram Brown talked about, whatever, I'm not in there to
discuss it.
It's just not the way I would approach it.
Yvonne Herrera, two for three, a double.
Had a really, really ugly throat of second base that looked like it slipped out of his hand.
so we're going to give him a mole again on that one, but it was gross.
Jordan Walker won for three.
That missile down the left field line had a nice running catch to start the game.
I thought the ball was going to pop out of his glove,
and I was about to start crying, but he held on to it.
Everything was fine.
Victor Scott, 0 for 4 at the plate.
He did hit a line drive to right field, like just like a pus line to the right field or right at him.
Tag that one really good, but he did have a tremendous.
running catch in the sixth inning to save Kyle Leahy's behind.
That would have scored two and tied that game up if he hadn't.
But like full run, stretching, caught it outstanding.
Mason went over three.
Honestly, my opinion on this is that he just needs to be more disciplined.
He swings at way too many pitches that are not strikes and that he's really,
even if he hits it, it's not going to go anywhere.
He's got to quit chasing.
He's got to quit.
I know he wants to hit the ball and he wants to be like,
I want to break out of this fuck.
I get it.
But he's got to,
he's got to be more patient at the plate.
He's just too anxious.
Ballpin was strong.
Leahy was,
who was so good this spring.
Finally got dinged up a little bit in this one.
Was the only one who actually gave up a run over four innings.
John King came in to get the birds out of that jam that Leahy had kind of put them in.
Two ground balls.
One of them found a hole.
And then the second one ended the inning.
So great job by John King.
Roycroft and May 10.
each had a shutout inning with a strikeout.
Halsley looked outstanding in the ninth inning,
struck out the side.
He was hit 102.
So the Velo was there.
First save after setting that franchise record last year.
Just a really complete game by the team.
Like everybody contributed in some way, shape, or form.
Whether it was defense, whether it was on offense,
pitching, doing their job late innings in the bullpen.
Like, it just, it was a complete game.
It was a fun.
game to watch. Kudos to the crowd who had a really long day because that stupid rain delay
would suck, messed up all the festivities and pushed everything off. Like it was just,
that's miserable. So kudos to you guys that were down there early and stuck around.
But a lot of positive energy around the stadium today, the crowd, the way they were backing everybody,
loved it. Loved it. I hope it stays that way this year. Obviously winning is going to
make it easier for fans to continue to come down and be a part of it all,
but with so much discontent with ownership and the front office and with Ali
and the coaching staff over the last couple of years,
it was nice to see Bush Stadium full, to see it, you know, loud, people cheering,
and the team winning. So it was a great experience.
Had a blast. Hope you guys did too.
Off day on Friday, back at it on Sunday, or Saturday, excuse me.
115 star Eric Fetty will be taking the bump against the twins, Joe Ryan.
By the way, Cardinals only undefeated team in the NL Central right now because the Reds blew their lead.
Brewers lost to the Yankees.
Cubs, as you know, already have lost a couple of games.
Pirates also lost in tragic fashion to the Marlins.
So Cardinals are the only ones that are still undefeated.
