U.S. customers. So the Cardinals are really wearing out the injury list already in 2024,
aren't they? Because before we can get into what happened in Thursday's game, we got to start
with what happened in Wednesday's game in San Diego because it had a significant impact on the
lineup for Thursday and possibly could have an impact on what the Cardinals look like moving forward
here in the immediate future. Now, both Brennan Donovan and Wilson Contreras, we're out of the
lineup for the home opener on Thursday after getting plunked by pitches in Wednesday's game.
Contreras got hit on the back of that left hand and then Donovan was hit twice in the game with
one of the pitches catching him flush on that surgically repaired elbow. Not great.
The lingering pain and swelling kept him from being able to throw or even extend his arm upon
swinging. So that's not good. Contreras sent in for an x-ray on Thursday after experiencing
more pain in his left hand, but those came back clean, which is great.
news because I was pretty nervous about that one. But Wilson Contrera said he did take some swings on
Thursday, but the issue with his hand was while he was catching. That's where he gave him the most
problem. So he has what is described as a bone bruise right now on that glove hand. He's hoping
after taking yesterday off. And, you know, they got today off. It's their first off day,
that he'll be back in the lineup on Saturday. That's the hope. We're not sure. Donovan made a
similar statement after Thursday's game that he should be good to go on Saturday as well.
Not quite sure why the Cardinals have dealt with so many hit by pitches so far this year,
but somewhere Ron Hunt is smiling about it.
I'm sure none of them have seemed intentional by any means.
Some of them have just been pitches that got away from the pitchers and some are probably
due to them trying to pitch our guys inside, which is just part of the game.
But the Cardals have been hit by a pitch 10 times, 10 times.
this season, only Cleveland has more with 11.
Donovan's been plunked four times already,
which is tied for first in the league with the guardians,
Andreas Jimenez.
And then the injury news kept coming.
Then we find out a little bit before game time that Matt Carpenter was going on the IL
after suffering a right oblique strain while swinging a bat.
After the game, he described it saying he was just swinging it and he felt the catch a little
bit.
And they got it looked at, got an MRI done, showed a slight tear.
So they decided to shut it down.
And he said hopefully he'll be able to get back, you know, as soon as he,
as soon as his IL stint is over.
It's the 10-day I-L.
So they're hoping to have them back on the active roster when that's over with.
But that's eight guys.
Eight guys on the injured list already by April 4th.
Like, what is this?
That's not cool.
And I'm sure you've heard this before when it comes to oblique strains.
They're kind of unpredictable.
They can linger.
They get re-injured very easily.
I'm sure they'll try to be cautious with carp because, you know, of this injury and because of the injury to Contreras.
The team had to call up catcher Pedro Pahas from Memphis yesterday.
Had to get an Uber out of Indy, which apparently costs like $400 something.
I think it was Jeff Jones who figured that out.
But if I'm being honest, is it such a bad thing, though?
Hold on.
Just let me say this.
Is it such a bad thing that Carpenter needs to take?
take a little bit of time off.
Is that such a bad thing?
He can still be in the dugout.
He could still be there with the, you know,
doing his thing in the clubhouse and being that veteran presence.
But didn't we all come to an agreement that having both him and Brandon Crawford on this
active roster was a little bit of a left-handed veteran overkill, kind of do the same
things.
They don't play shortstop.
You know, Crawford does that.
But they kind of do the same things with Lars Dupar's imminent return could be as early as
Saturday. Hopefully Contreras will be able to catch, which means Paul has we then go back to Memphis
and the big league roster can remain as is, which at the moment isn't such a bad thing.
So is it so bad that Carp has to go away for a little bit? I'm not saying I wish the injuries upon him.
I'm just saying as far as the roster construction goes, is it such a bad thing? Let me know in the
comments down below. But because this roster, you know, not changing it too much, I
I think that's a good thing because they're starting to mesh a little bit.
And it put on a comeback show for the bundled up crowd at Chili Bush Stadium on opening day on Thursday that had fans, dare I say, believing in them again.
Could that be happening?
We'll get into it next on Lockdown Cardinals.
Passion driving patience.

For usual, thank you to everyone who was watching the game along with me yesterday on opening day.
We sure had a lot of fun going back and forth and chit-chatting about things that were going on.
The good and the bad that happened yesterday in the Cardinals' home opening win against the Miami Marlins.
The St. Louis Cardinals, I mean, they're not a perfect team by any means.
We know that.
There rarely is such a thing as the perfect team.
Like even the Dodgers have lost a game.
They lost to the Cardinals, okay?
So as close as they are to perfect, maybe like the Braves very close to being,
you know what I mean when you talk about roster construction.
One thing that you can never plan for, though, is what the chemistry is going to be
between the guys in that clubhouse.
And is it me or does it seem like the cardals are starting to build some genuine chemistry
already?
Like, doesn't it seem like it's fitting very well together?
like this is a group of guys that work well together so far.
You know, you got the veterans, but you've also got the youthful pieces on this roster,
an interesting stat that I'm going to drop on you a little bit later about how young,
some of the guys in the lineup wore yesterday for the Cardinals.
But coming into the game, the Cardinals had a losing record.
Like, I'm not here to blow sunshine up your butt.
Like, they had a losing record.
They were three and four after winning the first two in San Diego.
They just had one of those games on Wednesday, where,
despite getting ample opportunities to win the game.
I mean, the Padres tried to give it to him.
Things didn't work out.
The lack of clutch hitting was a problem.
The strikeouts in general have been a problem.
But the great thing about baseball is there's always tomorrow.
And early on, things were going well for the Cardinals on Thursday.
They get that solo shot by Yvonne Herrera, who Ali had in the cleanup spot.
Like, who thought that was going to happen on opening day, or at least a home opener,
for the Cardinals that Ivan Herrera
will be a cleanup hitter. I did not see that coming.
An interesting choice, an interesting choice,
but it worked out well, so you got to give Ali credit.
If you're going to yell at him when he screws up,
you got to give him credit when he does something right.
And Ali nailed having Ivan Herrera in the cleanup spot yesterday.
He smokes that second pitch he saw in the bottom of the second,
tattoos it over the left field bullpen, 107.2 off the bat,
414 feet away from home plate, makes it one to nothing.
Lance Lynn, cruising.
cruising early on.
And then in the fourth inning,
gives up the solo shot to St. Louis native Jake Berger.
And this wouldn't be the last that we hear from the CBC alum.
In the fifth inning with the score nodded at one apiece,
the long ball bites Lynn, not once but twice.
Once by Josh Bell, two run shot.
Then again by Burger, another solo shot,
hits it into Big MacLan, just like that,
4 to 1, Marlins.
And after 83 pitches, Lance Lynn's day is over.
was four and two-thirds innings.
And I know people are like, oh, my gosh, why did they pull them so early?
Because of the day off today on Friday, they were able to use more of the bullpen if they needed
to.
That was the idea.
I don't think Lance Lynn was done.
He didn't look cooked.
But they decided matchup-wise, we're okay with this.
We can move on.
So Lynn goes four and two-thirds, strikes out seven, which was great.
But he gives up four runs on eight hits.
He walks one, three home runs.
Three home runs.
That puts the birds in a hole.
and we all know what happened to Lance Lynn last year.
We know what he went through, gave up a league high, 44 home runs last season.
But like most pitchers, when Lance Lynn misses his spots, he's going to get burned.
Like he just doesn't have the stuff.
When you're not popping 99, 100, 101, it's hard to get things by these hitters these days,
these mistakes and get away with it.
And after the game, he was talking to our guy, Jeff Jones,
describe the pitches to Berger specifically as horse manure,
although he didn't say manure.
But I would agree with that assessment.
You know, neither pitch went where Lance Lynn intended them to go.
And when that happens, guys are going to hit the ball a long way off of them.
So the Cardinals pitching staff is now giving up 15 home runs this year.
That's time for first in the league with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Cardinals did pretty well in that department last year.
They were one of the top teams in the league as far as not giving up home runs.
right now they're on pace to give up over 300 long flies this year.
Just to put it into perspective, the Nationals gave up the most last year at 245.
A lot of solo home runs in there so far this year of the 15.
I understand that, but just something to keep an eye on.
And if this was the same team as last year, after giving up the Taters and losing the lead and now it's 4 to 1,
you could probably fold up the tent and chalk it up as a loss.
Last year, you really didn't have a lot of.
faith that the Cardinals had, you know, the, what do we want to say, the moxie, if you will,
to come back in games.
Like, it seemed like as soon as they got down, they were toast.
And this team feels different so far this year.
And it's the young guys who have kind of made that difference who lead the comeback in
this one, thanks to also some shoddy defense by the Marlins.
Michael Ciani leads off the fifth, gets hit by a pitch, another hit by pitch.
Victor Scott, it's ground ball, second baseman, Louisa Rice.
Very good hitter.
Not a very good second.
Throwing wildly to second trying to get the lead runner.
Ciani goes to third, Scott to second.
That brings up Paul Goldschmidt.
And this is a situation where Goldie and Aronado have to come through.
This is why they're getting paid the big bucks.
These are why you're sitting in the lineup where you are.
You know, this is the reason why that you guys are supposed to be the best hitters on the team.
situations like that. And they've come up multiple times already this season where the lineup is
Sean the light right on Goldie and Aronado to come through and be something big for the Cardinals
and they haven't done it a lot so far this year. But both Goldie and Aronado, they've had a rough go
early on, but eventually they've got to break out of it, right? You know, you keep putting them in
these situations to succeed. And eventually you think that they're going to come through and do it
for you because they've done it for such a long time. So the fifth inning, Goldie doesn't get a hit,
but he grounds out.
It's a, you know,
at least puts the ball in play.
A lot of strikeouts this year.
But he gets one run in and then Nato,
it's a double down the line driving in two.
We got a one run game.
But then you get back to back ugly at bats by Herrera and Gorman,
two of the young guys, both ending in strikeouts,
and that snuffs out the threat.
And the strikeouts, I want to, you know, focus on this for a second.
They're really starting to bug me.
I don't know about you,
but it's really starting to bug me because there was a time.
There was a time.
Back in the good old age,
that a batter would be embarrassed to strike out in a game.
Like, it was embarrassing to have to take your back
and walk back to the clubhouse knowing that guy on the mound
just made you swing and miss or caught you looking.
And the Cardinals clearly don't feel that way.
It's just not that way in baseball all around the league, really,
because they continue to get just mowed down left and right
by opposing pitchers.
The Cardinals now lead the league with 83 strikeouts,
which is one more than the Dodgers who have played one more game.
than the Cardinals. They're striking out 31% of the time as a team, 31%. So that's horrible. That's about 10
strikeouts per game, which is just unacceptable. Last year, the Twins struck out a record setting
1,654 times. The Cardinals are on pace to strike out just under that. They're not on pace to beat that,
but they're still on pace to strike out the second most times ever in a season for a team.
Not a record you want to have, guys.
Let's work on that.
But luckily for the Cardinals, this is not the 2020-23 team.
It's not.
And they showed something that last year's team just didn't do enough of on a daily basis.
I'll tell you what that is next on Locked on Cardinals.
Baseball season is officially underway.

which is coming up here in just a couple of weeks.
My favorite aspect of prize picks, and I'm sure it will be one of yours,
if you haven't tried them already, is how quick things go.
and how easy it is.
Like, I don't like confusing things.
I'm not the smartest guy in the world.
I don't want to be confused when I'm trying to make a simple bet on how many,
you know, strikeout Stephen Maths is going to have on Saturday.
I don't want to be like all freaked out by what's going like, what am I doing?
What are all these numbers?
They make it very, very simple for you.
You can make your pick, submit your entry, and do it all in less than 60 seconds.
And we call those stinker tinker times where, you know, you're in the bathroom and you're kind of doing your thing.

game, just something like, you know, what about these guys? What are you thinking about these guys,
Ali? And manager, Ali Marmal said, if I can narrow it down to one thing, this club is going to fight.
I think we've shown that in this short period of time. And as corny as that sounds, because it does,
he's right. He's right. Last year, the team always seemed like it was just kind of waiting around
for something bad to happen. You know as a fan base, that's how we're. We're not. That's how
we felt they go up, you know, up four to two in like the sixth or seventh.
And you're like, yeah, but they're going to screw this up, right?
You know, we were expecting something bad to happen.
They played, they played nervously last year.
They played scared.
Even in games they were winning, you were just waiting around,
waiting on that other shoe to drop where you're like,
Gallegos is going to come in and blow it.
Somebody's going to walk a couple guys and screw this up.
So-and-so is going to make an error in the field.
They'll mess it up somehow.
But so far this season, to me at least, it doesn't feel that way.
It doesn't feel that way.
And I think it's because of all of the young talent that's been in the lineup so far.
You know, there's a really good mix of vets and youth right now.
And together, they were able to rally in this seventh inning on Thursday.
Started, thanks to another error by Louisa Rice.
Again, great header.
Not a very good infielder.
And by the way, like watching yesterday's game and seeing where the Marlins are.
Now, like, they haven't won yet.
They're, what, 0 and 8?
Do the Marlins not remind you of last year's Cardinals?
Like, think about it.
A lot of good talents sprinkled around the field.
You know, you've got some names that you're like, wow, this is a pretty good team.
But they're dealing with some injuries.
They make a lot of dumb mistakes.
They've got bad defense.
You saw that on display yesterday.
And their bullpens getting torched.
Like, these are all things that the Cardals went through last year.
It could be a long year in Miami for Skip Schumont.
and company, especially if these injuries keep happening.
You know, no Sandy Alcantra, Uri Perez, gone for the year now,
two of your best pitchers, gone for the season.
So it could be rough in Miami this year.
Anyway, back to the game.
Goldie gets on with that air by Louisa Rice.
And then it's Aranaana with the single.
Nato, a sneaky three for five yesterday, by the way.
They weren't loud hits.
The double was a nice one, but they weren't loud hits, but three for five.
Nonetheless, hopefully that gets him going in the right direction.
And then it's the youngsters. Yvonne Herrera again, RBI single.
Skip goes to the pen again to go get a lefty to face Nolan Gorman,
who says, what strikeouts?
What are the strikeouts?
What are you talking about?
Dumps a double down the line in right field.
Right field are playing way off the line.
Couldn't get over there to it.
Scores two, Cardinals end up taking the lead six five, but they don't stop there.
No, no, no, no, no.
They keep their foot on the Marlins' throats.
And with two outs, Alec Berluson finally gets a ball to go through.
Always seems to hit it right at people, but ends up scoring
Gorman, then Mason Wend, who really started to look pretty comfortable at the plate.
I think you got to agree with that hitting a lot more line drives.
Doesn't hit a line drive here, but it's a pitch low and away and he takes it to the opposite
field.
He dumps it down the line in right field.
And yeah, probably should have been caught over in right field, goes off the right field,
there's glove.
But it's a hit nonetheless.
And with Wynn's great speed, it's an RMI triple.
And all of a sudden, you look up and it's eight to five cardinals out of nowhere.
They just explode for the runs in the seventh inning.
And then your bullpen comes through again outside of the one inning that Miami manufactured a run against Libertor.
They don't do much of anything against Palante, Gallegos, Romero, and Helsley over four and a third.
And the Cardinals come back to get the win.
And, you know, it's a combination of a lot of good things, clutch hitting, strong defense, still no errors.
Yet this season for the Cardinals, only the Braves are still without an air.
so far. And another
outstanding job by the bullpen gets the team back
to the 500 mark for the first time
this season. And I know that's like,
oh, great, you're just at 500, but considering
how things started against
the Dodgers and, you know, you had a chance in San
Diego to sweep that series. You didn't do it, which is
kind of a downer to come back and
without a lot of brust, with a lot
of travel going on here in the
early portion of the schedule, you're
back at the 500 mark and now you're at home.
Now you're at home. You're getting a day off
here today. Some notes from Rob Brains at STL Sportspage.com coming off the simulated game against
double a springfield hitters on Wednesday, Sunny Gray, who were all waiting, can't wait
to see him on the bump for the Cardinals, believes his next appearance can actually be for the
major league team. The team has not yet made an announcement. They haven't made a decision on that yet,
but he personally thinks that he's ready to go. He feels great. He's ready to go thinks he could throw.
I don't know, I've like the pitch cap, like 75, 80 pitches, if that's what he had to do,
that he could do it at the major league level.
He feels comfortable and confident and what's happened with that hamstring.
And he's ready to rock and roll.
He wants to be a part of this.
I know a lot of people were giving the Cardinals a hard time for having a rotation and a roster
with so many older veterans on it.
But Herrera was one of five players in the starting lineup, age 23 or younger,
yesterday, including Michael Siani, who is still a rookie.
He started and left.
The Cardinals had six players, age 24 or younger, in their lineup during their home opener on Thursday.
That doesn't sound like a super old team to me.
Now get off my lawn, you whippersnappers.
Anyway, Jake Berger goes yard twice, last opposing player to hit two home runs in a Cardinals
home opener was former Cardinal legend.
Bobby Bonilla did it with the Mets back in 1990.
92. Cardinals have their first day off for the season today. They need it. They deserve it.
Hopefully we use this day to heal up some of their wounded like Brendan Donovan and Wilson Contreras.
Then they're back at it on Saturday afternoon. I guess the cream color uniforms are ready to go.
I saw that the championship blues, the powder blues that the Cardals wear on Saturday away games apparently won't be ready until June.
Like what in the what is going on with these uniforms? Like how do you not have the
uniforms ready to go. I don't understand what the hell has happened this year with these uniforms.
Like, what a disaster. They look terrible. The players think they look terrible. They feel like they're
just kind of cheap. You know, they got the sweat stains are showing through. You got see-through pants.
Sometimes they don't match. Like, what a disaster. I saw that the Phillies unveil their city connects
today. I guess they look fine. Hopefully the cardals will turn out okay whenever they reveal
theirs, but what an embarrassment for the league.
Like, could you see the NFL ever going through something like this with their uniforms and
helmets?
Like, if they were to tell, like, you know, the Packers, you know, your, you know, wagers,
he won't be ready until week eight.
Like, what the hell is going on here?
Like, I don't understand it.
I don't get it.
It doesn't make any sense to me, but no chance to something like this ever happen.
in the NFL. Like, that's the standard MLB needs to be at when it comes to how they conduct things
and do things. And it's just not. It's just shabby looking and it's embarrassing. Anyways, Stephen Matt's,
Taylor Rogers, tomorrow. 115, St. Louis time. That's when the Cardinals will be back on the field.
