It was a playoff type of atmosphere, and the Cardinals got a playoff type of performance from their starter, Matthew Libertor.
This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are Locked on Cardinals, your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm Jaddy Hafferner on today's show.
We're going to take a look at life in the NL Central.
It continues to be a very tough, tough, tough, tough.
division how Jordan Walker compares with arguably the best hitting right fielder in baseball,
but let's get into game one, which was on the West Coast. I know, I know, very tough with
these late starts. I mean, I got my coffee right here in my Fred Bird sippy cup. 910,
St. Louis time. It was Matthew Livertore taking on Michael King and the San Diego Padres.
another extremely tough test for this Cardinals team during this 17 game stretch,
which was supposed to be 17 and 17, but because of the rain out, which wasn't a bad thing,
it's now 17 and 18.
But they've already faced the pirates, the Dodgers, the Brewers, all three, in my opinion,
are playoff caliber squats.
And thus far, they had a 7 and 5 record, which I know does it sound super impressive.
You're like, well, that's not all that great.
but when you go up against competition like that,
like to have a winning record so far,
I feel like that's a big deal.
I feel like that's a very big deal.
Let's see, yeah, seven and five.
So when this stretch started,
I said, you know,
I'd be happy if they finished around the 500 mark,
which meant eight or nine wins.
Now I'd be shocked if they didn't come away with double-digit wins,
the way these guys are playing.
Two to one victory in their first West Coast game
And first off, shout out to the fans at Petco Park on Thursday night.
They packed the stadium for the ESPN game.
It was a sellout.
And it definitely had this, this playoff vibe at the ballpark.
A crowd of almost 45,000 people were there.
And the two teams fed off of this.
And they played like it was a playoff showdown too.
Like every pitch, every out, it just everything seemed magnified.
So it was really cool to watch.
after the game, Ali said talking about the atmosphere,
you know, you want to check certain boxes when you come to
growth and development with this young group this year.
And one of them is being able to play in tough environments.
I'd like to see another group of young as ours.
That calm in an environment like this.
Like they were impressive.
It was impressive last night.
I'll be honest, what we saw from Michael King.
I expected that out of Michael King.
What we got from Matthew Livertore, I really did not.
I thought life for Libby would be much tougher than it was on Thursday night.
This was arguably as good as I, well, let me put it this way.
As good as I've seen Libby this year, for sure.
And definitely one of the better starts of his entire career, probably not his best.
He's had some games where he's thrown shutouts and whatnot.
But this was really, really good.
And it didn't begin all that well when after getting the first two hitters, he walks
Mani Machado.
After a lengthy eight pitch of bat, it's not like he.
just threw four, you know, non-competitive pitches up there.
It was a tough at bat with one of the best to ever do it in Mani Machado.
Then after getting ahead, oh and two on Fernando Tatis Jr.,
who still doesn't have a home run this year, which is crazy.
He singles.
That's followed by another single by Zander Bogart's who's been resurgent recently.
And all of a sudden, it's 1-0 Podreys,
eerily similar to how things went against the Brewers on Wednesday,
when all six runs scored with two outs and four of them came in that first inning.
But you know how we keep harping on the little things and how they can become big things
in a singular game?
And Libby catches Bogart's looking down.
He takes his lead off first base.
He looks down for a minute.
Bang.
Libby snaps at and throws a ball over to first base, picks him off, ends the inning,
limits the damage, which was huge because you don't want things to snowball.
again, like things did on Wednesday against Andre Palante against Milwaukee, where, you know,
it was a base hit, then a base hit, then boom, three run home, and you're like, oh, my gosh.
So we're able to stop the hemorrhaging right there.
And after that, Libby was cruising, boys and girls.
One more hit, aloud in the game, ends up firing six innings, one run, three hit, six
strikeouts.
He had three walks in there, but that's all right.
As good as that line is, what I noticed the most about,
what Libby was doing was just the rhythm he was in.
He was in this amazing rhythm.
Him and Pahas had this connection going last night.
And it looked great.
There wasn't a lot of downtime.
It was get the ball, throw the ball, get it and go.
And pitchers love that.
As a former pitcher, we love that.
When things keep stalling in the game, it throws off our tempo.
and Libby was just in sync, not the band, but his mechanics all night.
He looked strong.
He looked confident.
And I wonder how much of that unexpected rainout, which gave us an extra day off,
which got, you know, allowed them to reset the bullpen, reset the rotation.
I wonder how much of that ended up being a factor in this and helping Libby get an extra day of rest before he had to take the mound against an opponent.
So outstanding job of Matthew Libert, and, um,
and Pedro Pahas. They were, they were phenomenal as the battery last night.
And not only did you have Libby looking good, but, you know, Michael King on the other side for San Diego,
he's no slouch. And he was breezing, breezing through the Cardinals lineup at the same time
until fourth inning rolls around. And guess who? Mr. Biscuits, Alec Burleson,
smashes the first pitch change up into the seats in right field, sixth home run of the season to
tie the ball game up at one apiece. That home run snapped.
a streak of 127 at bats by the Cardinals since their last home run,
which was by Jordan Walker back on Saturday.
So now we're all knotted up and one apiece.
And this duel between Libby and King, it was just back and forth.
They were excellent.
It really did feel like a playoff type of game where they were pitching so well.
The hitters weren't just giving away a bats or anything.
And they weren't making it easy on them.
But the pitchers were winning.
And they continue to go back and forth until that seventh inning.
And that's when the Padres did something.
something that it kind of caught me off guard. So we'll talk about that coming up next on Locked
on Cardinals. The NHL playoffs are here where every shift matters, every moment is intense,
and the pressure is at its highest. I don't know who you're rooting for in the Stanley Cup
playoffs right now. I just like watching exciting games. This Colorado and Minnesota series is
awesome. Just two elite teams going head to head. I'm kind of rooting for the Montreal Canadiens
at the same time just because I like the way they play. And just like how performance matters on
the ice, it matters off the ice too. And that's where Rougiet comes in. Rougiet offers treatments

So we're in the seventh inning now.
And I don't know if Michael King was on a pitch count.
I don't know.
Perhaps he was.
He was at 86 pitches,
which I didn't feel like was all that much.
It didn't seem like he was slowing down.
It didn't seem like he was fading at all.
And outside of the burly home run, he was dominating.
It was the only hit.
He gave up in the game, a couple of walks, but that was the only hit.
One run, one hit, six Ks.
He was extremely impressive.
And when he didn't come out for the seventh inning,
I was a little surprised by that.
Didn't seem like he'd worked all that hard.
He didn't have like a bunch of like long extended baths to wear him out.
He seemed fresh.
And I know the Padres got this crazy.
good bullpen. And I understand that. You want to utilize that. But, you know, we're going to,
those are four-game series that we're getting into here. So, you know, you're going to need that
bullpen later on. And I was just surprised that they pulled Michael King and they didn't give him
another inning to go out there and continue what he was doing. And removing King kind of did the
cardinals of favor here because, first of all, they weren't hitting him. And they immediately pounced
on the new pitcher, which who was a 22-year-old, Bradley,
Rodriguez. Very strange first name. Bradgley Rodriguez. He comes into the game. He's been really good this year as his almost every single person in their bullpen.
But Jordan Walker meets him and rips a change up that was up in the zone, rips it down the line of left field for a lead off double. And he just missed getting it over the wall in left field.
Had a little bit more top spin on it than he probably wanted. But we're not going to complain about this lead off double.
Nolan Gorman comes up next. Strikeout. It was a tough night for Nolan Gorman.
the dish had an ugly, ugly three strikeout game, although he had a really good about later where
he took a walk and it was like a really good at bat. So hopefully that gets him moving in the right
direction. But until then, uh, was very much in danger of getting that golden sombrero. But Mason
Wynn comes up next and he comes through as he normally does this year. He's been very clutch after
those first, uh, few games of the season where they had him hit and cleanup. He, uh, hits like,
I would consider like a plummeting line drive. Like it wasn't a blooper, but it wasn't,
a line shot by any means, but it was, you know, it was plummeting into right field where instead
of platinum gold glover, oh, I shouldn't say, platinum glover and gold glover, but platinum glove
winner, which is, you know, for the best defensive player in the league, Fernando Tathis
Jr. is normally out in right field. Tatee Jr. makes that catch. And he probably does it fairly
easily. But instead, out there in right field is the much slower Nick Costiano's, not quite as smooth
out there in the outfield, not nearly as good defensively as Fernando Tatis Jr. is.
And he makes this do or die attempt at the ball that drops and scoots past him for an
RBI triple to make it two to one. He almost caught it. It would have been an excellent catch,
but he didn't. Good news for the Cardinals that he didn't. And it rolls by him. So apparently
the reasoning behind this is Jake Croninworth is on the IL right now. He's dealing with some concussion
symptoms. And so they've been using Tatis Jr. at second base instead of in right field. So
I don't know how many times a platinum glove winner as the best defensive player in the National
League switches positions the next season.
I don't know how many times that's actually happened, but it's not my problem.
Cardinals took advantage of it.
Mason would end up getting stranded at third base, though, after church struck out,
Pajas grounds out.
But Cardinals take the lead two to one, and then they handed over to the bullpen.
And they were awesome last night.
George Soriano takes over that seventh.
and there was a big call here too because if you remember well maybe you didn't watch it but if
after Tatis junior leads off gets this infield single hits a little dribbler that you know
Mason win did his best to get to but Tattees runs very very well he gets this infield single
drives to seal second base but gets gunned by Pahez who it looked to me like they did a little bit
of a pitch out there call on the field wasn't out they review it most people thought he he might
have been safe could have gone either way really but call on the field was out so the so the umpires just
stuck with it they're like yeah you know we're not going to overturn this so our original call stands
they snuffed out the momentum right there after that uh that lead off hit cardinals kind of had the same
thing happened to him cardinals got victor scott and an endfield single start the eighth but
victor was originally called safe when he stole second base on the steel with them they ended up reversing it
And although it was, I think it was just as close as the Tate's play.
And I would have stuck with whatever the call was on the field had it been safer out.
They decided to reverse it.
Third time this season, the victor has been caught stealing.
The bummer here is that after he gets caught, Padres pitcher Wandi Paralta ends up turning into wild thing.
Rick Vaughn can't find the zone whatsoever.
He walks Weatherholt.
He walks Yvonne Herrera.
So, you know, you're like, oh, my gosh, so we would have bases loaded.
in that situation. But instead, first and second, he gets early to ground into the double play,
ends the threat. So that was really all of the threats in this game following the times that they
scored. Joe-Jo Romero comes in and that eighth inning makes super quick workout out of everybody,
seven pitches to end the frame. That's awesome because that means he's barely done anything
and he's good for maybe one, two more appearances in this series if you need him. And then they
handed over to Riley O'Brien in the ninth and it took him just 10 pitches to nail down his
11th save of the season, which is now tied for the most in the entire league with the Padres,
Mason Miller.
They're ultra cool closer Mason Miller who's doing record setting things this year.
So a very impressive win for this team considering you had to deal with the time change.
Ha ha, yeah, coffee, right?
Time change.
You had the atmosphere, which was a raucous crowd at Petco Park.
And it was awesome.
It was awesome.
The level of competition, you're playing one of the best teams.
not only in the National League, but in Major League Baseball and the San Diego Padres.
And you get another victory.
You do it on national TV on ESPN.
I'm telling you, people are starting to notice what the baby birds are doing.
And it's really, really fun to see the reactions from people who don't get to watch this team every day
and how impressed they are with what this young team is doing so far this season,
especially the expectations being where they were heading into the season where, you know,
you had some places saying, hey, they could lose 100 games.
Well, for those of you who didn't believe that nonsense, I was one of them,
hopefully you put the bet down and you're going to cash in huge at the end of this season
if things continue the way they are going right now because this team is playing
excellent baseball, like all around, offensively, defensively,
the pitching's starting to round into shape.
Bullpen's been better, not quite as like freaking out.
every time they come into a game and give a lot of credit to the players, obviously,
for doing their job and working hard.
But also, how about a little love for Ali Marmal,
who's dealing with the youngest roster in Major League Baseball
and has them beating teams like the Dodgers and now the Padres
and the Tampa Bay raised at the beginning of the season,
who are now running away with things as far as a team underneath the Yankees.
Like those are the top two teams in the American League right now.
You know, they do an excellent job.
The coaching staff, Dusty Blake, Bram Brown,
taking care of the pitchers and the hitters.
And, of course, all their assistance,
which they've been able to, you know,
they added a lot more help.
And it's working.
It is working.
These guys have all bought into the teachings of Dusty Blake and Brant Brown
and Ali and what the Cardinals are doing.
And they're opening up some eyes around the world of baseball
after taking two or three from the Dodgers.
And I won the first one in San Diego.
on national TV. They'll get another chance to do it tonight because they're going to be on Apple TV in game two of this series.
But these are elite teams and the cardals are competing their butts off against them and winning and winning.
So it's been very much enjoyable to watch. And I hope that, you know, being that it's a Friday night, you're able to stay up late and check them out this time around.
We're going to knock out the three stars from Thursday night's game next. And we're going to take a look at life in the Central where one team in our division is having a really rough.

Thank you for making Lockdown on the number one sports podcast network. Thank you to the Memphis Redbirds for this sweet new hat that I got.
I love it. It's my new my new truck cap, but I wear a lot of black and gray from time to time.
And when I'm not doing the Cardinals, I'm not wearing red and blue constantly.
I wear a lot of black and gray.
And this hat is perfect.
So I don't know how many more of them they got left in the team shop.
But if you want one, go to the Memphis Redbird's website and get you one.
That's where I got it.
Three stars of the game are pretty easy, pretty easy for me.
We're going to go with Matthew Libertor as your number one.
Makes perfect sense.
I really love what I saw from him on Thursday night.
The pitch that was really popping off the page that was getting a lot of attention from the
telecast as well, where they even called it a Barry Zito type of pitch was the curveball.
After the game, Ali and Libby both talked about it, saying that tonight was probably the best
as curveball's been, which is the biggest differential in speed with all his pitches.
So it allows him to keep guys off balance.
Libby chimed in saying that the curveball felt really good tonight.
Just the command of the off speed stuff in general felt really good tonight.
And I think that helped me quite a bit.
Libby, whatever you did coming into the game and whatever you did in pregame, whatever the meal
was keep it up. Do it again and again and again and again because you were awesome,
my friend. Second star of the game. I'm going to send this one over to Mason win. The RBI
triple was the difference maker in this one. He was also his normal, steady, self at shortstop.
And the boys turned two more double plays and continue to be among the elite defensive teams
in baseball. He and JJ, you know, you would think that they've been playing together for years,
years. They're so smooth together up the middle. Gorman has been better than expected at third base
defensively. And then you got Burley who's becoming the pick a machine over at first base.
He was excellent on Thursday night and it has been throughout the season. So that end field has
been outstanding. And then of course you're getting the defense that you're seeing from Jordan Walker
and right field. Victor Scott and Nathan Church and your other two spots in center and left field,
there's just been a lot to like about what the cardals have done.
year. Speaking to Jordan Walker, he becomes my number third. My number third. I don't think
that makes any sense. I told you, I'm up too late. You have not had a ton of coffee yet today.
But third star of the game goes to Jordan Walker, who was two for four in the game. Both of them
doubles, both of them to lead off innings. First one set up the go ahead run in the seventh.
And his second one also let off late in the game was a hundred. This was impressive, you guys.
115 miles per hour off the bat, just a bullet that goes through the.
in field. This is a ground ball, guys. And it found enough green and left center field for him to
kind of kick on the afterburners, stretch it into a double in the lead off the inning, which was
huge because, you know, you're getting a guy into running in a scoring position right away is what
you want to do. Unfortunately, he did not come around to score because they were, you know,
they just didn't get the job done. But he put him in a position for good things to happen.
And I just started thinking about it last night since we were up so late.
When you think of the best offensive right fielders in baseball,
you know, Aaron Judge obviously is the first name that comes to mind.
And when you look at the numbers,
Jordan isn't too far off from his production this year.
I'm not saying he's Aaron Judge.
Don't misconstrue this and get it into the comment section where,
are you kidding me?
I'm not saying he's Aaron Judge.
I'm just saying when you look at their numbers,
Jordan's hanging pretty well with them so far this year.
308 average for Jordan Walker, 270 for Aaron Judge.
Aaron Judge's got 15 home runs.
Jordan Walker's got 10.
Aaron Judge's got 29 ribbies.
Jordan's got 27.
Jordan's got eight doubles.
Aaron Judge is six.
Walker's got seven stolen bases.
Aaron Judge has got five.
Now, Judge is walking more.
He's got a big lead there at 2816, but he's also struck out more than Jordan Walker, 47 to 43.
OPS and slugging, they are one and two among right fielders.
judges first Walker's second and then they're one and five and on base percentage so awesome stuff
awesome stuff from big number 18 who by the way will turn 24 later this month Aaron judge
34 years old so um just decades separating them no big deal but you've got to be excited I know I am
for what we've gotten from all of these guys so far this year but specifically Jordan Walker it's
it's been a real treat to see him come around after a couple of really tough seasons
where he dealt with some injuries, dealt with going up and down and up and down that yo-yo
effect in the minors.
And this year, for whatever reason, all the work that he has put in over the years
and has finally paid off.
Everything is clicking.
He has a better idea of what the strike zone is.
He's not chasing as much to those outside pitches.
And again, he's going to go into a funk again at some point.
They all do.
So when it does happen, don't everybody flip out, okay?
Give them a week and a half, week or two to get back into sync again and see what he can do.
But so far, so good, so far so great for Jordan Walker this year.
All right.
Also, shout out to the bullpen.
Didn't want to mention this for quick and drama-free work in the seventh, eighth, eighth,
Soriano, Jojo, Riley.
You guys were awesome.
That was a really fun ball game to watch.
and I'm glad the boys came out on top of it.
It would have been one of those who are like,
ah, how frustrating to lose two to one.
You win two to one.
You're like, whoo, it's good stuff.
I think the caffeine's kicking in.
Here we go.
Other action in the NL Central on Thursday,
Cubs throttle the Reds 8 to 3.
They win their 15th in a row at Wrigley Field
and sweep the Reds who are down bad right now.
They've lost seven in a row and are 0 in the month of May.
They're 0 for May and our 1 in the division so far this year.
year. Tough times right now in Cincinnati. Pirates beat the D-backs four to two. They take two of three
in that series against Arizona. Since getting swept by the Cardinals, the pirates had rattled off five out of
five wins in six games. Brewers were idle on Thursday. So the standings are as follows. Cubs are in first.
Winters of nine straight. They're now tied with the Braves and the Yankees for the best record in baseball at
26 and 12. And I'm going to give them credit. I know this is a Cardinals podcast and we're not supposed to
like anything about the Chicago Cubs, but give these guys credit, 26 and 12, despite losing
Kate Horton, who was their best pitcher? Justin Steele, who was their best pitcher before
them? He's still not back from his arm injury. They just lost Matthew Boyd, who apparently
had a freak knee injury while he was playing with his kids. I don't know how that happened,
but they're also, their bullpen has been decimated by injuries, and yet the Cubs are thriving. So they are no
joke. They are no joke whatsoever. They've been on this run for quite a bit and they're tough.
And the Reds just learn the hard way how tough the Cubs could be. Cardinals are three and a half back of
Chicago, 22 and 15. They sport the fourth highest winning percentage in the league thus far.
In fact, they're now tied with the Padres. Pittsburgh, third at 21 and 17. Brewer's are fourth
in 19 and 16. And then the Reds have dropped the last place, but are still two games above 500 at 20 and 18.
That team does not suck. They're just in a bad way right now. And I'm sure they'll climb out of
But Cubs will be in Texas this weekend to face the Rangers.
Pirates are also out west with the Cardinals.
They're in San Francisco.
Brewers are at home against the Yanke.
So that could be a tough series for Milwaukee.
And then the Reds are at home against Houston,
which has had all of their pitching taken away from them too.
So we'll see how that shapes up.
So two teams that aren't playing quite so well.
Somebody's got to win them.
So we'll see how that shapes up.
But Friday night's game, you got Michael McGreeby on the mound
against former Angel and Met, Griffin,
who was making his second start of the year.
I do recall that Griffin Canning kind of shoved against the Cardinals last year.
So hopefully they learned a thing or two about what Griffin Canning can do
and are able to take care of business tonight,
at least put up a little more offense than what we saw on Thursday night
where it was two runs on five hits.
So hopefully a little bit more than that.
McGreeby, by the way, grew up in San Clemente, California,
which is, I don't know, it's about an hour north of San Diego.
So a bit of a homecoming for him.
So I'm guessing he's going to have a lot of family and friends in the crowd,
which normally brings the best out of some people.
So hopefully we get a good start from McGreevy tonight.
First pitch, 845 p.m. again, it is on Apple TV.
So plan accordingly.
Let's keep this momentum going, boys.
