Starting point is 00:00:00 With the 13th thick in the MLB draft, the St. Louis Cardinals select Georgia High School outfielder Trevor Condon, who has been widely compared to one of the fan bases worst enemies. This is Locked on Cardinals. You are Locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Hafford. Hafford. in today's episode brought to you by Cal She for a limited time. Download the Cal She app. Use code locked on to get $10 when you trade 10 Calci trade on anything. Today's show, it's a weekend show because there has been so much going on that I didn't want to wait until Monday. Cardinals defeat the Braves, not once but twice. They do it on a rain soaked night on Friday and then again on Saturday. They add another all-star to the midsummer classic. JJ Weatherholt gets extension. All of this great stuff to discuss. us, but probably, well, I guess J.J. would probably be the biggest headliner. That was obviously massive and we'll get into that. But the MLB draft also happened on Saturday where the Cardinals
Starting point is 00:01:12 two years removed from taking J.J. Weatherholt, seventh overall. And one year removed from picking fifth overall and taking left-handed starter Liam Doyle, who just got done throwing in the futures game. We're back at number 13 this year, which was wasn't where they wanted to be, obviously. They were hoping that the lottery would work out better than that. But they ended up at number 13. And with their selection, they chose Georgia, high school outfielder, Trevor Condon. So who is Trevor Condon?
Starting point is 00:01:45 What kind of guy is Trevor Condon? Well, let's get into this a little bit. Here's some photos of him in case he hadn't seen what he looks like. But he was ranked number 13 on MAAB Pipelines top prospect rankings. Scouting grades, 2080 scale, as you should be aware. of by now if you're in every day or you know this uh hit tool 60 power 45 run 70 arm 55 fielding 60 overall they gave him a 55 grade listed at 511 178 pounds but in his video when uh when he was talking he was like he said 5.9 so that's a couple of inches off there so I don't know which one it is
Starting point is 00:02:25 we'll roll with 511 although why would he lie about his height if uh if he was not five like why would he lie about five nine but anyway um what's really going to catch cardinal nation's attention is that his MLB comparison is p. Crow Armstrong, which player wise, obviously, you love that. Uh, personality wise, that's the where, you know, some fans might be like, uh, oh, because PCA's kind of a polarizing person. Um, but he's certainly one of those guys that like on your team, I think you're like, yeah, we love this guy. Like a lot of people didn't like Yaddy or Molina around the league because of the way he conducted himself and how he was.
Starting point is 00:03:08 But here at St. Louis, obviously, he's the goat, right? So we'll see. He certainly has a lot of confidence if you watch any of the interviews, which I think is a good thing when you can back it up. He also got comparisons to Lenny Dykstra, who was a heck of a player for the Mets and especially with the Phillies in the early 90s. MLB Pipeline had this to say about him in their,
Starting point is 00:03:31 in their, in their scouting report that Condon was the Georgia Gatorade player of the year after leading his team to a 6A state championship through 36 games. Hit 5.04, nine home runs, 42 ribby, 17 doubles, stole 15 bases. Even though Condon is a Georgia kiddie is not related to Charlie Condon, which makes sense as they are both different, very different players and builds. Condon has been rising upboards this spring has stood out before due to contact skills, speed, and athletic traits. Then this spring, he started hitting the ball harder with exit velocities making one wonder if there was more potential in his bat than previously expected and moving him solidly into the top five prep bats in this class. He went from sub 100 exit V loss velocity to 106 as reported by baseball America, which elevated the profile from a potential plus center with plus defense and speed. who might play center to a player who might also have above average power. When you look at that profile, that's a top five player at what is currently the hardest position to fill in baseball.
Starting point is 00:04:37 His swing is unusual, which is why they have him a bit lower than the other prep hitters in the top five. Now, this part of the scouting report, we're going off our guy, Jeff, who covers the MLB draft for the Lockdown Podcast Network, says he has him a bit lower than the other prep hitters in the top five because of the unusual swing. unusual can be good, he says, but it can also be something that holds a player back. He loads up a bit, then passes before the bat seems to explode forward. He is a very physical kid, likely maxed out, which is why the jump and exit below is a really positive development. Of course, that would be the case with any hitter, but being physically filled out doesn't
Starting point is 00:05:17 give him the same pathways to add more velocity than others. He is a player with multiple above average and plus tools. They give him multiple pathways to be successful as a major leaguer. The high-end outcomes make him a potential all-star, but the ability to be a contributor on multiple levels is one of the reasons he's a top 20 player in this class. Quick note after the combine, which is the easiest place to hit, the fact that his 90th percentile exit velocities were under 102 raised some concerns and dropped him into the 20s for Jeff.
Starting point is 00:05:47 He is so physically maxed, he is not sure how much he can add if the EVs are that low, which moves him from a player with multiple paths, pathways to one. It is a different environment, so one can maybe wonder if that bothered him, but it's an environment that any showcase kid has seen something like it before. Now, personally, watching his tape, you can see why he gets the comparisons to Peacrow Armstrong. Left-hander, not a huge guy by any means, but the speed pops, like, that you can't miss it. when you watch this kid ride, the energy, the swagger. He's, you know, as Jeff mentioned there, he's built like a tank.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Like he obviously takes very good care of himself, which is good to know for a kid that's 18 years old, that, you know, he's already, what appears to me, it looks like he's a gym rat. Eats right, takes care of his body. That's huge. Great maturity for that side of being a baseball player at this age. I didn't see really a lot of defensive highlights. It was a lot of hitting highlights that I went through outside of the combine footage. But I'm guessing he covers a ton of ground out there.
Starting point is 00:07:07 The scouting grade obviously says he's pretty good with a 60 strong arm. And when you look at the grade comparisons between Condon and PCA, they match up pretty good. So Condon, as I mentioned, hit 60 tool. PCA was a 55. Power wise, Condon's at 45. PCA was at 50, but we're starting to see more power from Pete Groh Armstrong in the big leagues than I think some people thought he would have when he was in the minor. But he's a 50, Condon 45. Run.
Starting point is 00:07:40 We know PCA is one of the fastest dudes in the league, right? Look at the way he's like a gazelle out there. PCA was a 60 grade and Condon's at 70, which is incredibly fast. arm they match up perfectly at 55 and I know PCA if you watch them out there in outfield everybody raves about the arm fielding 60 for Condon PCA had an 80 you know you see how he covers and yeah he makes some pretty bonehead looking mistakes from time to time but you can't dismiss how good p. Kirk Armstrong is out there in the outfield so overall condon's a 55 PCA is a 60 PCA listed at 6 foot 184 today
Starting point is 00:08:24 Condon 511 178s of very similar builds. The player that PCA is undeniably a star. Like what an athlete, what a star that the Cubs have in center field. Can Condon develop more power to go with those other tools to become the same type of player? We hope so. We hope so. And the Cardinals obviously are hoping as well, or they wouldn't have taken him at number 13 overall. So I, some people are like,
Starting point is 00:08:54 Why don't we take a pitcher? We need pitching. You know, it's just the way the board falls. And not a lot of pitchers got taken early in this draft. It was a little bit odd. If you're watching the draft at all, Cole Hamils was there to be kind of like the pitching guru. And they didn't even need to be like, yeah, I could have taken some time off here early on. They just weren't taking a lot of pitchers early on. And, you know, the Cardinals ended up taking more pictures later on in the draft, which is still going on at the time of this recording. but we'll go through all the draft picks and stuff in a later episode. But what are your thoughts on Trevor Condon as the Cardle's first round pick? He seems like a guy that, you know, we're going to enjoy if he can develop against.
Starting point is 00:09:38 He's a high school kid. So it's not like drafting J.J. Weatherhold or Liam Doyle, who, you know, Doyle should be about pro-ready, you know, major leagues in a year, maybe two at the most, where, you know, you've seen what J.J. Weatherholt's already done. You know, these guys are in their 20s where Condon's 18 years old. So it's going to take some time. But clearly he's got his head on straight as far as the focus being, I just want to be a great baseball player.
Starting point is 00:10:08 He was so happy and excited and said all the right things in the interviews. But he's got some swagger, which I kind of dig as well. Again, if you can back it up, it's a good thing. Cardinals take the first two from the Braves to have a chance of sweep on Sunday. We're going to talk about those games coming up next on Locked on Cardinals. Baseball season is here, and now you can trade every game on Cal Shee. On Cal She, you can trade every single game. Cardinals are trading at 54% to beat the Braves on Sunday, meaning a $100 trade pays out to $176.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Now, if you were to go with the Atlanta Braves over St. Louis, it's $209. And 47 cents. But are you really going to go against the Cardinals? Come on now. Come on now. On Cal She, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there is no house. And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position. And for a limited time, download the Calci app.

Thanks for making Locked on Cardinals, your first listen of the day.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Thank you for making Lockdown on the number one sports podcast network. Yes, we got the ugly shirt back on because the Cardinals won a series. And it feels like it's been forever. It really hasn't. But after what it felt like they played the Brewers for a month in a row, right? Five games and four days. That was miserable to watch for the most part, especially because, the Cardinals lost four of those five games.
Starting point is 00:12:05 But hey, the Braves come to town. They're still beat up and the Cardinals are taking advantage. Whatever Matthew Libertor does before he pitches against the Braves, he's thrown against him twice now. Whatever he's been doing, keep doing it and make all the other starters do it too, because it is working. Whatever, whatever meal he's eating, whatever music he's listening to, whatever socks he's wearing, whatever it takes.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Doesn't matter. Libby do it every single time because when Libby faces the Braves, he becomes an absolute stunt. He's done it. He pitched against him on the 30th. Pitched against him again on Saturday. And he looks like a completely different guy out there against them for whatever reason. Six more shut out innings while striking out six to get his fifth win of the season. He's now two and oh against Atlanta this season, has allowed just one run over 11 innings, which is a 0.82 ERA with 15 strikeouts against him. I mean, what? Like, where is this guy? How do we
Starting point is 00:13:08 get this guy to be more consistent so we can see this out of him on an every appearance basis? Which I know, it's asking a lot, but more times than not, we need this guy. We need this Libby because he looks completely in control and confident and feeling good out there. When he's faced the Braves these last two times, Ali had this to say about his. starter on Saturday that, you know, he got some first out pitches, which obviously is a good thing, says that was helpful. But he was on the attack. He spun it well today, too. His secondary stuff was really good. Had seven pitches going, missed some bats, which is also good to see. Now, when you hear seven pitches, you're like, wait, hold on, how many? What? What's this other one he's throwing?
Starting point is 00:13:50 Well, Derek Gould at STL Today.com, pointed out that he started throwing his sweeper against Atlanta end the game on Saturday, which is just another wrinkle that might help him moving forward. Was something that, you know, that he, that he toyed with a little bit, but I guess he hadn't felt comfortable to use it in games just yet or didn't seem like, didn't feel like a certain spot was the right time. Unleashed it a couple times in this game. And I believe one of them gave up a hit and the other one I think he got a strike out on. But, you know, the more you throw, the different looks that you can give hitters than the better
Starting point is 00:14:26 you are, the better off you are. Because, you know, when you're only throwing four pitches, like eventually they're going to figure you out. And Libby even mentioned that in the post game. He was like, look, you know, I've seen these guys just saw them recently. And, you know, I thought maybe this would make sense to bring it out for this occasion. Well, everything was working. The breaking ball looked fantastic. So, again, whatever you're doing, Libby, keep it up. Because I've enjoyed watching you pitch the last couple times. against the Braves, that is. Lars Newport, big swing of the night, three run blasts in the first new all-star,
Starting point is 00:15:04 Yvonne Herrera with that generous single in the first day. He probably should have been an air, although it wasn't hit very hard. And Yvonne was hustling down the line. So you're an all-star. So you get those calls when you're an all-star, right? Jordan Walker goes appo for a single. Then it was new teeing off on that curveball, makes it three-to-nothing cardinals and we're off and running.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Newt's third home run of the season. He scored the second and final car. Cardinals run in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single by Blaze Jordan, who made up for earlier in the game when Brian Torres hits a lead off triple and they aren't able to score him from third. Lead off triple, nobody out, they can't bring them in, which was like pretty frustrating. Like the really good teams, you think that ever happens to Milwaukee Brewers that they've ever had a lead off triple that didn't score?
Starting point is 00:15:49 Probably not. But Blaze Jordan was part of that where he struck out as the first hitter after the triple. and then you had church got out. It was just the next two guys got out. And it ground out. It was back-to-back ground outs is what it was. And they couldn't score. So that sucked.
Starting point is 00:16:07 And you were hoping that that didn't come back to burn you later on. And luckily enough, it didn't. Loan run against the Cardinals came against the rookie Luis. Gastelum is how they're saying it now. I thought it was Gastilum. But they're saying Gastalum, they had a whole conversation about it. So Gastelum is how we'll say it from here on now. gives up that Soma home run to Maricio Dubon on the first pitch that he throws.
Starting point is 00:16:29 It was a sweeper that broke a lot, but it just happened to break right down the middle. And Dubon did not miss it. After that, though, strikes out Austin Riley. Gives up that double to Eli White. The infield was in, and he sneaks one down the line in left field. A lot of speed on Eli White's that are playing in on him. So that gets by him for a double at third. But he gets Bart to ground out.
Starting point is 00:16:52 And then he whiffs Jarvis on that whiffle ball-like changeup to, in the ending. So a couple of strikeouts there, got to like that. And I liked it. You know, Ali is trusting Luis to come in into big situations and trusting him so far. That changeup is disgusting. It's a lot of fun to watch. George Soriano comes in, clean eighth inning, two strikeouts. Then it's the all start. Riley O'Brien, who comes on in for usual. We got to have some drama because that's what we do. We got to have it. We're not allowed to have anything easy in this town. So we got to get some drama in there, tying run. Comes to the plate after a lead off walk and then a two out hit by pitch. But ends up catching Joey Bart looking to end
Starting point is 00:17:35 the game grabs his 24th save of the season, which is currently tied for the NL lead. All-Star. All-Star Riley O'Brien. Nice. Cardinals win this one, four to one. They're now four and one against Atlanta. And yeah, they're catching the Braves at a good time when they're really beat up. A lot of guys are heard. The Chris Sale game, the rain out. Chris Sale is breezing right through the Cardinals and then the rain hits and they got to go to their bullpen. But they're 4-1 now against the Braves after beating them on Saturday. And then that late night, rain-delayed game on Friday, thanks to the solo shot by Jimmy Crooks in that eighth inning. Two-hour and 44-minute rain delay.
Starting point is 00:18:13 It looked awful at Bush Stadium. I have no idea how they got the field ready for them to play. It was shocking to me and wild that they even played that night. But it worked out for the Cardinals who picked up the win. And after the win on Saturday, they're now that. within a game of the third wildcard spot in the National League. They'll go for the suite today before they make the break for the All-Star break. Coming up, let's talk about Yvonne Herrera.
Starting point is 00:18:38 Let's talk about J.J. Weatherholt, like, just good things. Good things happening with the Cardinals. We'll jump into all of that coming up next on Locked on Cardinals. Cardinals now have four representatives at the All-Star game in Philly this upcoming week. Jordan Walker, Riley O'Brien, manager Ali Marmal is going to be there. And now in the D.H.Roura was added to the team on Friday as a replacement for
Starting point is 00:22:26 Shohei Otani in the D. He'll be unable to play because he's dealing with that knee injury that had him hobbling around the last couple of days. if you've watched any of the Dodgers games, like it, apparently he's going to have it drained and stuff. So, but it doesn't look good. It looks like he's in a lot of paint. But hasn't shut it down completely. He's still playing, still de-aging,
Starting point is 00:22:47 just won't do it in the All-Star game, which makes sense. But congratulations to Ivan Herrera, who has been hit by a lot of pitches this year. And I feel like this is kind of like, hey, man, we're sorry. We're sorry who you keep getting popped with the ball. Want to come to the All-Star game? We'll take care of you.
Starting point is 00:23:05 All right. So that's cool, though. They were going to have a lot of, a lot of Cardinals to root for in the game. Jordan's going to be in the home run derby, which is great. There was some footage of him practicing before the game on Saturday, which looked great. I don't know if I'm going to bet on him, though, to win this thing. Like having Schwabber and Harper in the home run derby in Philly, like it just doesn't feel like it's set up for Jordan Walker to get there. You know, it feels like it's going to be one of those two guys.
Starting point is 00:23:35 that'll probably win this thing. Because I think that would be really cool if it was like Schwerber versus Harper in the final round. But we'll see how they pair it up and stuff. I don't even know how they're doing it. But I know they're going back to the old school rules. I knew that. But either way, we hope Jordan has fun, stays healthy and continues his hot tear in the
Starting point is 00:23:57 second half of the season after the derby is done. J.J. Weatherhole signing his deal, obviously huge news as well, kind of a big deal. finalized that eight year 112.5 million dollar deal on Friday guarantees his contract through 2034. Largest signing ever by the organization for a player with less than a year of service time. It is the first multi-year commitment for our newest president of baseball operations time, Bloom. And I couldn't be happier about it hearing about JJ coming up through the system after they drafted him. And remember, he was in San Antonio or the cowboy get up and stuff. like you're like, okay, this guy looks like he's got a pretty good personality.
Starting point is 00:24:36 There were, you know, rumors that he might even go number one overall, but he had gotten hurt that final year at West Virginia had a leg issue. So he drops. And the Cardinals are more than happy to scoop him up at number seven that season. And then you see like when he goes to every level he went to, they win. Every level he went to, they started winning. You know, he's at Palm Beach. They win.
Starting point is 00:24:59 Springfield. They win. He goes to Memphis. they're kicking butt. And then they have them in the show this year and look what the Cardinals are doing this year, surprising a lot of people. You need your cornerstone guys. And for years, the team has had to trade for corner cornerstone type of people,
Starting point is 00:25:17 which isn't a bad thing, but it's nice to be able to develop your own guys and do something like this where you've got him locked in for eight years now, eight years at 112.5, which I know that it could, I think it could go up to, what was it, like 130, somewhere in that vicinity. Could go to 132.5. So, but still, that length and that amount for what JJ Weatherholt gives you day in and day out for the next eight years. I mean, that's a deal. And that's what you can do when you have these guys and you produce these types of people. Like, you don't have to go trade assets. You don't have to take on these massive contracts like they did. with Nolan Aronado. You don't have to do that when this happens. So it makes a whole lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:26:07 It makes a whole lot of sense to lock him up. And I'm glad it got done. I'm glad it got done. And he's like pillar number one of this rebuild. He joins Albert Pooholz is the only Cardinals to sign a $100 million contract before going to an arbitration hearing. And the nine figure commitment follows Goldie's extension and Matt Holliday's free agent deal as the fourth, $100 million dollar. packed in club history. That's it. That's the only people who have done this so far. According to Derek Gould, the extension begins in the 27th season. It buys Weatherholt out of his three years of free agency.
Starting point is 00:26:44 In return, he gets the security of the roster's only guaranteed contract beyond this season. The contract does include escalators tied to awards like MVP and gold gloves, I'm sure, so that Weatherholt, too, is 23, can earn an additional $20 million during the final three years of the deal. Like I said, it could max out to $132.3.5. half million dollars, but there's no option years. There's no opt-outs. Like he is the Cardinals unless they decide to trade him. He's our guy for the next eight years.
Starting point is 00:27:11 And that's awesome. Next on the list, I'm guessing they'll start talking to Jordan Walker after his breakout season. Bill DeWitt the third even said in the press conference, he goes one down, several more to go at some point. Who else is he thinking about? Herrera, Mason, Winn, Alec Berluson, I don't know, I don't know, certainly Jordan Walker.
Starting point is 00:27:32 Don't have any pitchers we're really looking at yet. You know, you're hoping that Liam Doyle can become that guy. Played in today's futures game, by the way. Struck out a couple guys, walked a couple guys. But still, he was humming in there. It was popping 99 at the futures game. So that was cool to see. I don't know if Rodriguez is in the game yet.
Starting point is 00:27:53 As I'm doing this, they're in the sixth inning. So maybe he's in there already. But I haven't had a chance to watch because I'm talking to you instead. making this video. And now you're going to get some time off. And you can really start thinking about what do we do with the deadline here? Because you're right there in the wild card race.
Starting point is 00:29:20 It ain't going to be easy. This is going to be a tough decision. You come out of the gate with, I think it's Arizona, and then the Angels and then you got the Reds and I think you get the Cubs again. So then you're right there at the trade deadline. So this is not going to be an easy decision. I know for the long term focus, like you want to sell. Short term, though, it's hard to say, you know what,
Starting point is 00:29:45 we're going to punt on this season despite as well as you guys have played. Kind of hard to do that. So we'll see what they decide. We'll see what they decide. You guys are the best fans in baseball for a reason. and we'll see you next time on lockdown cardinals.
