Starting point is 00:00:00 Dustin May and Lars Dupar continue to be popular names in trade rumors. Could one of them end up playing against the Cardinals in their next series? This is Locked-Oardons. Starting point is 00:00:39 So the Cardinals were able to avoid the sweep in Toronto on Sunday. And we saw the debut of Quinn Matthews over the weekend. So I do want to talk about both of those topics a little bit later. But right now it is all about the trade deadline, right? The Cardinals and their forgettable month of July, all but sealed the deal on what might have been a tougher decision than we expected when this whole season started. You know, nobody gave the Cardinals a snowball's chance at hell of contending for anything this year. And for three months, they had a lot of us believing that they could make the playoffs.

Starting point is 00:01:14 Like we were like, whoa, I mean, this is, this is crazy, right? But going 10 and 18 in July, put the kibosh on that real quick. So here we are at the trade deadline where most of us thought they'd be. Trade deadline is going to be at 5 o'clock tonight. on Monday, if you're watching this on Monday is when you're supposed to watch this. But five o'clock is when it's going to take place. And, you know, most of us thought they'd be selling anyway. Like that was the whole idea.

Starting point is 00:01:44 You know, at the beginning of the year, we're like, all right, we're going to get certain people. And those are the guys are going to be traded later on. And that's probably what's best for the franchise right now anyhow. So, well, things out, see how things stand after, you know, the CBA gets figured out, whenever that gets figured out, hopefully sooner rather than later. and if the cartels decide to start spending money again, because we don't know. But they are trying to fix things from the inside out first,

Starting point is 00:02:08 and that's fine. And in the meantime, it's time to see what assets they can get back for guys that they have right now. Now, the names, I should say, that are frequently brought up are Dustin May and Lars Neup bar. The number one name is Dustin May. Dusty is the number one guy. Free agents signing this offseason,

Starting point is 00:02:28 we all saw the writing on the wall when they got it. The idea was one-year deal, the plan was to keep him healthy, boost his stock back up, flip them at the deadline for something decent. That's what it's always been. And we've already seen some pretty big names move. So the trickle down to Dustin May's tier of guys, it's getting closer, obviously, and Monday being the deadline. So it's got to happen. Terrick Scouble goes to the Dodgers, Freddie Peralta went to the race, Kevin Gosman, went to the Cubs. There's been some other smaller acquisitions already,

Starting point is 00:03:07 but those were the three big ones pitching-wise. So they're making their way down to where Dustin May is sitting and waiting. The latest on Dustin May, courtesy of Derek Gould at the at STL Today.com, said that the Phillies and the Tampa Bay race, two teams that have shopping lists that match the players, the Cardinals are willing to trade, have had a scout around the Cardinals in the past week, and were present to see May's most recent.

Starting point is 00:03:31 start per sources. Other clubs that have recently evaluated the Cardinals in person include both the Red Sox and the White Sox. The Ray is getting Freddie Peralta might have changed their minds on going for May. Like he was probably a backup to that. But the Phillies, Red Sox, White Sox have yet to make a move for a starter. The Sox actually, you know, they traded away one of their guys. They traded away Connolly Early to the Nationals for Curtis Mead, who then broke his wrist in his first game with Boston. We don't know if Garrett Crochet is going to pitch for them again this year. And as we know, Hym is no stranger to making deals with Boston, man,

Starting point is 00:04:11 after the Sunny Gray and Wilson Contreras trades that have worked off or have worked out wonderfully for Boston. And I don't think we're complaining on this side of things with the Cardinals. We're just in different spots where, you know, most of our stock was into guys that were going to be in the minors for a little bit. But, you know, they were able to get Blaze Jordan for Boston in a separate deal. But you've also got some, you know, Brandon Clark is a guy that, you know, everybody's excited about.

Starting point is 00:04:41 And you've seen Hunter Dobbins. And we hope Richard Fitz is somebody who pans out eventually. But either way, things have worked out for both sides, right? Boston's where they want to be. Cardinals are where they thought they would be. May last pitched on Wednesday held the Cubs to five scoreless innings. one hit, three to two win, has been relatively healthy this year, averaging 96.8 on his fastball, which is the 84th percentile of Major League Baseball. I said a few really bad games. We know this.

Starting point is 00:05:11 A few really bad blow-up games. First two out of the gate, we're awful. But for the most part, he's been a pretty solid pitcher for the Cardinals. And honestly, even if they do trade him, which is going to happen, I think, I wouldn't mind circling back and seeing if Dustin May has any interest and coming back for another round in St. Louis when it's all said and done. I don't think he's going to get like one of those five-year deals or anything super crazy. So I think that's something that maybe they should look into and be like, hey, you know, this is where you understand the business right now, but you enjoyed being in St. Louis.

Starting point is 00:05:48 We enjoyed having you. Let's see if maybe we can work something out. Doesn't mean they will, but it's something to think about. The other name that's being mentioned a bunch is Lars Newport. and it could get injured because like the, okay, the Phillies is the name I want to talk about here because the Phillies kind of have a need for both, for both of Dustin May or a large Newpar. According to Derek Gould, the Phillies, the Astros and the Yankees are among several clubs that have checked in on Lars New Park.

Starting point is 00:06:23 The Yankees did make a deal to get the, in my opinion, very underrated Louise Garcia, Jr. from Washington. I know he's not a defensive dynamo by any means, but man, that dude can hit. He's also a lefty, so we'll see how that affects things with their interest in new, but that would be a little awkward, right? Because, you know, the Cardinals are going to New York to face the Yankees to start the week. And if they make a deal with New York, they just switch clubhouses and, hey, go ahead and send nude on over, right?

Starting point is 00:06:50 But the Phillies are the team that could use both guys, you know, they want to shore up the back of their rotation. They might be looking for somebody a little more veteran to go into that outfield. So we'll see. Gould also mentioned Nolan Gorman and Pedro Pahez, saying with several clubs scouring the market for catchers, the Cardinals are also open to interest in catcher. Pedro Pius, he's viewed as a defensive first option for clubs looking to stabilize that aspect of the position beyond this year.

Starting point is 00:07:22 He says the Cardinals will also look into what interest there is in former first round pick Nolan Gorman, who was at AAA Memphis and his arbitration eligible this winter. The stock on Nolan Gorman is obviously very, very low. And this very much feels like the Dylan Carlson fiasco all over again, where he was a highly tatted prospect for you. It didn't quite work out. You held on to him a little bit too long. And now his stock has dropped so far where you're not going to get much at all for him. Although when they dealt Dylan Carlson to the Tampa they raise, they got Sean Armstrong, who I thought was a pretty good reliever. Then they let him go so he could go sign with a playoff team, I think.

Starting point is 00:08:03 I think that was the whole idea there. But it has been at least a capable reliever. I mean, we could do some both. That's for sure. But I don't know. It just sucks because Gorman, you know, you hung on to him. You believed in him. You gave him opportunity.

Starting point is 00:08:19 It never clicked. It never worked. And it sucks. But that's part of the risk. on to these guys. I mean, look what just happened with Teen Kent's. Teen Kent was a guy that they drafted high and it just hasn't worked out. The injuries got the best of them. He hasn't pitched well when he's been healthy. And they DFA ate him when they brought Quinn Matthews up. So I put him on the 40 men. So sometimes it happens. You know, not every draft pick is going to work out. It is what it is. But either way, the cartels are set to make some moves and we're going to be here if anything happens. So keep it locked in on lockdown cardinals. whether it's on any social media, videos, obviously, on YouTube and stuff, we'll be cutting shorts and letting you know when things go down. So Cardinals did avoid the sweep on Sunday, which was good news.

Now the first two games of the series against the Blue Jays, the Cardinals' offense got shut down pretty easily. You know, what else is doing?

Starting point is 00:10:37 scoring just one run in each game. They lost three to one, then lost five to one. And then for eight innings on Sunday, there they are, sitting there with one run on the board. Again, offense was just stuck. And I get it that there was some pretty good pitching matchups here for Toronto. Friday, you had Dylan Sees, who held them in check. Saturday, you had Kevin Gossman, who is now a Chicago Cub.

Starting point is 00:11:00 Although they got nine hits against them, they just couldn't bring anyone around to score, going one for eight with runners in scoring position. they stranded 11 guys on base. It was ugly. Sunday, they had to go up against St. Louis native Max Scherzer, who is now in the twilight of his Hall of Fame career. And yeah, I would love, because this always gets brought up anytime we talk about Max Scherzer. I would love to see him don the birds on the bat at some point before he hangs it up. I feel like those odds are pretty remote at this point, considering where the Cardinals are in their rebuild of trying to get back to contention and where Max Scherzer is, where like, he doesn't want to. play for a rebuild. He wants to be on a team. He thought Toronto was going to be good again this year. He, you saw him last year going to the World Series. He was having a blast. Um, but even at age 42, Max, I feel like he looked pretty good on Sunday. Diled in, made life tough on the struggling offense allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out five

Starting point is 00:11:55 in six innings. On the other side of things, the card dolls had Matthew Libertory going and man, well, I need this Libby all the time. He was dealing six innings. He allowed. He allowed. one hit, it was an infield hit, strikes out seven. And I said this in my post game short, that it's games like this that make what we've seen from Libby this year so frustrating. I mean, he's had multiple games now where he has just dominated people. Like he's, he's had, what, eight games with one earned run or less against him?

Starting point is 00:12:34 eight. That's really good. Problem is he's like the Batman villain Twoface, where he's also had nine games, where he's given up four earned runs or more against him. So it's like a flip of the coin, which one are we going to get? And Sunday, we got really, really, really good Libby. And I'm not expecting him to be this dominant every time. I understand that. But if he can find that middle ground consistently where he's not the four earned run guy,

Starting point is 00:13:06 but it doesn't always have to be the one earned run guy. If he can find the two and the threes, do that more consistently. You'd have one hell of a pitcher in your rotation. I mean, he was dealing on Sunday. Retired 13 batters in a row after that infield single before he issued a two-out walk in the six. But he ends up striking out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for a third time, which is how we finished the inning. there. Then I saw the quote where he didn't even realize he struck Guerrero out three times until I think it was Michael McGreevy said something to him.

Starting point is 00:13:38 And was like, hey, did you realize you just struck out Vladdy three times? And he's like, I didn't realize that. That's when you know you're in the zone. And you're not even paying attention to stuff like that. And you're, you're just doing it. It just becomes robotic. And you just do it. It's a fun place to be in. And Libby was there on Sunday. The question we're all wondering is, how do we get this Libby? more often. What is it? It will unlock him to stay like this. You know, Libby and the Carls have been trying to figure this out for two years as a member of the starting rotation. And maybe they do over the final two months of the season. And it's something to build upon for next year. That's what we hope. Um, odds are probably not going to happen. I mean, do you have faith that

Starting point is 00:14:21 they're going to figure this out? I mean, it's been two years. Either way, I don't want to sound negative. about it because that's not a good way to be. But either way, loved what we saw from Libby and this one. I hope he continues to show this moving forward. All right? Afterwards, Libby said it felt like I worked ahead of guys a lot better. And even when I wasn't throwing a first pitch strike, I felt like I did a good job of getting myself back into the count,

Starting point is 00:14:47 filling it up and putting pitches where I need to. And that's really it is because he's got a huge strikeout guy. It's not a power guy. He's not throwing 98, 99 up there. He's got to hit his spots, just like most pitchers. And when he does it, he gets hammered. And he was hitting him on Sunday. Unfortunately, he doesn't factor into the decision on Sunday with the Cardinals up

Starting point is 00:15:07 one nothing thanks to the RBI double by Lars Dupark. The Blue Jays threatened in the seventh against Ryan Stannock, who another name to keep an eye on at the trade deadline, finding guys who can throw triple digits and are free agents after the year not costing you much. I mean, why wouldn't you want that if you're a playoff contender? but he pitches around that one-out triple by Springer, is able to keep it one-nothing. Then in the eighth inning, it's George Soriano, who comes on.

Starting point is 00:15:36 He gives up that two-out, and that's what sucks, too. This happens with two-outs. The two-out single to Andres Jimenez, who then steals second base, because that's what people do against the Cardinals, and scores on the RBI double by Luis Rias to tie it up. Soriano fell behind three and O to him, and so what do you do? You groove one normally, thinking that they're not going to swing,

Starting point is 00:15:59 and Urias had the green light on 3-0, and he made him pay for it. Top of the ninth inning, Toronto goes to their all-star reliever, Louis Varland, and he ends up walking Mason Wendellied off the inning. We all know that's a big no-no when the Cardinals do it. Same thing works for you guys. Bad, bad, bad, back-to-back singles by Torres for me, and that makes it two to one. Church would pop out trying to bunt, which is super annoying,

Starting point is 00:16:23 but that was a pretty insane catch. by Alejandro Kirk, who was behind the plate at the time. Sprite for a little and a little beefy guy. Let's say that. Popped out of it real quick, two-time All-Star. So, I mean, it's not like he's not good. And then Newgrounds won at Sega Bayes and we think the inning is over.

Starting point is 00:16:43 And the throw is terrible. He spikes the throw. And it gets away. Torres ends up scoring. That makes it three to one. And that brings up Jordan Walker, who still does not have a home run since the All-Star break. I know it's weird. But he comes through here with a two-run single, gets it just over that glove of the shortstop into left field.

Starting point is 00:17:07 Two-run single, 5-1, and that's how it would end. Riley O'Brien came on in the ninth inning, gave up a lead-off hip, but pitched around it looked good. So after the game, Holly, he was pretty happy, you know. I mean, when you're not winning anymore, like, you've got to be pretty happy about, how things go when you do get that W. And he gave the guy's credit for taking advantage of a situation where Toronto made the mistake. He said that's what good teams learned to do.

Starting point is 00:17:34 Once there's a tight game, they make a mistake. You got to be able to cash in. Got to be able to cash in on it. And he said, we had opportunities earlier in the game that we missed. So it was good to be able to capitalize on it later. Said today we were able to drive in a couple there late. So, you know, usually it's the other way around for the Cardinals. You know, it's not them taking advantage of mistakes.

Starting point is 00:17:59 It's other people taking advantage of our mistakes. So it was nice to see them turn the tables on Toronto for once. Cardinals finished the series without hitting a home run. We know that they're in a massive power drought right now. Neither did Toronto, by the way, which was weird. But the Cardinals have really had this power outage going for a while now. Four home runs in their last 15 games. And predictably, their record has suffered for it.

Starting point is 00:18:20 They're four and 11 in those games. You got to have some sort of power. you know if you're not going to drive in guys with doubles and stuff like that which is what teams like the brewers do that the card let you're not going to do it then you got to figure out a way you got to hit it over the wall and they haven't been doing that so the offense has just been awful absolutely awful it's just not a lot of fun to watch and you know in some of these games you see all these hits streak against the blue jays so that's good and cardinals pitchers that i mentioned Toronto didn't hit a home run either.

Starting point is 00:18:57 they haven't given up a home run, the Cardinals pitching staff to the last 151 batters they faced. So that's pretty good. All of that is probably going to end this week when they take on the Yankees in the Bronx because if you go to baseball, Savon, you can look up, you know, how each stadium plays out as far as offensively where the Cardo, like push stadium dead last, like nobody wants to hit there. But Yankee Stadium is tied with Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati as the second best home run hitting stadium in the league, Dodger Stadium. is rated number one. Again, when the team that plays in that stadium a lot hits home runs, like it's going to be higher, but Yankee Stadium is 314, I think, down the line right of field. So hopefully some of these fly balls that die at the track that the Cardinals continue to hit when they're at home, they're going to go out in New York. So hopefully we see some power there. Now, the biggest trade chip on the market got dealt over the weekend when two times Syed Young Award winner and free agent to be a Terrick school bowl got shipped from the Detroit Tigers to the Dodgers. And people got all but heard about it because they're sick of the Dodgers getting everybody. And I get that. But I've been telling anyone and everyone who would listen to me that this was going to happen

Starting point is 00:22:05 and I'm not mad about it. And the reason I'm not mad about it is because this is not a money thing. All right. Trading for Terrick Scoobal was not a money thing. The Dodgers are not paying him a gazillion dollars. They didn't trade him and sign him to a 15-year deal worth $500 million and something ridiculous. At least they haven't done yet. They still could.

Starting point is 00:22:25 But this was simply a case where one team was willing to give up more than anybody else to get him. and the Dodgers beat everyone else with their offer. The Dodgers sent a trio of prospects, two of them in MLB Pipelines, top 100. Zahir Hope, number 25, right-handed River Ryan, number 68. And they also threw in right-handed Brady Smith, who was their number 17 prospect. Like, the Brewers could have matched that or done better. They could have.

Starting point is 00:22:58 If they wanted to, they have arguably the best farm system in the league. But they didn't do it. They're like, ah, too rich for my blood, not going to do it. Rays, Cubs, Braves, Yankees, all of them, all of them could have offered more, but didn't. They chose not to. Now, if Scoobble signs with L.A. for, you know, like I mentioned, a crazy amount of money as a free agent to go along with the crazy contracts of Otani and Tucker

Starting point is 00:23:26 and Betts and Yamamoto and all those guys, then, yeah, you can whine a little bit. You can whine all you want. These teams had a chance to do it. They had a chance to get schoolable from Detroit, keep them out of the Dodgers' hands, make their teams better down the stretch. They chose not to. So don't yell at the Dodgers for being willing to give up the best prospects to get them.

Starting point is 00:23:53 That guy that's not their fault. They've got a really good farm system. They've got a lot, a lot of good prospects. So they're able to put a good package together. And they probably could have done a better one than that if one of these other teams had stepped their game up and pushed them a little more, but they didn't. So I don't feel bad. I think it's hilarious.

Starting point is 00:24:12 I think it's hilarious that the Dodgers, they don't have snow or glass now right now, but they're going to get all these dudes back plus Scoobel, plus Otani, plus Yamamoto, and Sasaki. They got all these dudes. Like every single dude in that rotation is better than anybody in the Cardinals rotation, all six of them. I think it's hilarious. And the Cardinals are working on it, man. They're working on getting their prospects together. They understand what the assignment is.

Starting point is 00:24:41 Quinn Matthews is one of those guys. They're hoping become something for them. Made his debut on, what, Saturday? I thought he looked good. Like, I didn't have any issues with him. Let's see this picture. I like this picture back. I like that he wears his socks up.

Starting point is 00:24:55 I dig it. I dig the Matthews look. But I think he was fine for his Major League debut. Nothing like having to go to another. country to make it. He allowed two runs over five plus innings, six hits, three walks, three strikeouts, which is on par for what we got out of him in the minor leagues. Like he has some issues with walks from time and time. That's just been a thing, but he's gotten better at it. And I, overall, I would,

Starting point is 00:25:22 I know Toronto hasn't been the team and he thought they'd be this year after making it to the World Series and pushing LA to the brink. But that's still a lineup that's got some pretty big names in it. You know, Springer, Guerrero, Jr. although Guerrero Jr. I don't know what, what's wrong, why he can't hit home runs anymore. It's crazy to me. Ernie Clements over there, Akamoto.

Starting point is 00:25:45 I mean, it's not that bad of a lineup. And Quinn held his own. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him as the season progresses. Now, the hope, according to Ali, is to keep him up in the big leagues unless something happens in one of the upcoming, games that doesn't allow for it, you know, or it's either an injury or somebody doesn't go very long and they got to get a fresh arm to bring into the bullpen. But they would like to keep

Starting point is 00:26:14 them up there. So that's good. So we might get a little more Quinn Matthews moving forward. Speaking of arms, Liam Doyle, do you got to see what he did over the weekend. Five and two thirds innings, one run, no walks, 10 strikeouts. Mm-hmm. Still took the loss, which is kind of funny. He's two and seven on the year. And he only gave up one and run of this one, and he lost. But over his last five starts, things are looking good. 1.85 BRA for Liam Doyle over his last five starts.

Starting point is 00:26:50 Opponents are hitting just 198 against him. 28Ks, 24 and a third innings. It's going up. He's going up, man. That's what we like to see. Top catching prospect, Rayno Rodriguez, continues to, impressed since June. Bating 329 with 11 dingers on the season. He's at 297 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs. Dude is just crushing it at Springfield right now. I know we talk a lot about Joshua

Starting point is 00:27:20 Baez. You hear his name mentioned a lot, but Jesus Baez, who is the guy the Cardinals got in that deal for Ryan Helsley with the Mets, he's been on a heater as well. He's now hitting 257 with 28 bombs and 73 ribbies. 29 games of double A. He's hitting 277 with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs. 29 games,

Starting point is 00:27:42 14 home runs and 32 RBIs. Dude is just sick right now. Baez brothers. The bashing Baez brothers. I'm sure we can come up with some cool names, right? Meanwhile, Joshua, he's still doing all right. 251, 32 homers,

Starting point is 00:27:58 83 RBIs. He slowed down a little bit. But obviously he's still a monster prospect. There are other catching prospect. Leo Nauter up and all. 280, 14 home run 65 RBI. It's like I want to see, I can't wait to see these guys. You know, I'm excited about it.

Starting point is 00:28:17 Like I've been watching minor league games more than I'm watching major league games right now because I want to see these guys and I'm excited about them. They're all between the ages of, you know, 19 and 22. Like, it's awesome. Like I love it. Top right-handed pitching prospect. Hanna Franklin got promoted to Springfield. Was dominating down to Peoria, so he's up.

Starting point is 00:29:12 He was part of the deal with the Brennan Donovan deal with Seattle. So he's going up as well. He got promoted. 284. It's in home runs, 40 RBIs with Peoria. The future is very bright. I know we're all kind of bummed about the, the teen Kent's thing because that sucks.

Starting point is 00:29:27 But the future's bright, man. They got some, they got some, They got some studs. And they're all progressing pretty well. So you got to be pleased about that.
