Starting point is 00:01:13 Today's episode brought to you by eBay Motors from brakes to exhaust kits and beyond eBay Motors has over 122 million parts to keep your rider die alive with all the parts you need at the prices you want. It's easy to bring home that big win. Keep your rider die alive at eBaymotors.com. Eligible items only exclusions apply. eBay guaranteed fed only available. to U.S. customers. So the Cardinals fall to the Pirates on Tuesday night at Bush Stadium by the score of 2 to 1.
Starting point is 00:01:41 And for diehard baseball fans, this was a game that I think a lot of people enjoyed. Like it was a nice crowd at Bush Stadium on Tuesday night. It wasn't the outcome that Cardinals fans wanted. But for fans who like seeing a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel, this was the game for you. In one corner, you had the 22-year-old 6-foot-6. 235-pound rookie phenom Paul Skeens with an excellent mustache, by the way, number one overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft who at this time last year was playing for LSU, pitching in the college world series for them as they go on to win the college world series over Florida.
Starting point is 00:02:21 The dude has been a beast since coming into pro baseball at every level that he's pitched at, and the Skeen's hype train hasn't stopped since making it to the major leagues. in the other corner, you had the 35-year-old grizzly veteran, 6'4, 230-pound lizard king, Miles Michaelis, two-time All-Star, who's since signing his extension with St. Louis has, let's be honest, it's been a bit underwhelming at times. And this year, he's had issues with having one bad inning. We've gone over this a lot. It's usually one bad inning per start that ruins his entire body of work.
Starting point is 00:02:58 it makes it look a whole lot worse than probably what it should be because you see Miles Michael is and he'll throw up four zeros and then there's one bad inning where he goes up three or four. I understand that they still count, but then you see him in those other innings and you're like, look how good he looks. And then he has that one bad inning. Well, on Tuesday night, he avoided that. There was no bad inning. So it was a lot of zeros. Tuesday night, both guys put on a pitching clinic against each other. For eight innings, neither team could score a run at Bush Stadium. Skeens would last longer than he has ever in any previous game at the Major League level, throwing over 100 pitches, six and a third innings. He allows no runs,
Starting point is 00:03:37 no walks, five hits. He strikes out eight, but not to be out done. Our lizard king, our man, Miles Michaelis, doing his thing too. Perfect game going into the sixth inning. Retires the first 16 hitters that he faces. Had a no hitter into the seventh inning. Michaelis, his final line seven innings no runs one walk one hit six strikeouts it was a thing of beauty by both pitchers these are the kinds of games that you see like in the month of october right where any mistake a walk blue pit any stuff like that can cost you the game an error somebody doesn't hit a cutoff man something like that all of those little things that matter so much in october that was the kind of game that you had that you had on tuesday day
Starting point is 00:04:28 where it felt like who was going to blink first. It was a pretty fun atmosphere at Bush, despite not a lot of offense to go around. Now, the Cardinals had a couple of chances to score against Skeen, specifically in that fifth inning, where you got the lead-off singles from Nolan Aronado and Brendan Donovan. Made it first and third,
Starting point is 00:04:46 and nobody out Matt Carpenter comes up, and you just kind of believe that Matt Carpenter's going to do something to get that run in, and it doesn't happen. He strikes out swinging. You get a wild pitch, which moves Donnie up to second base. you're like, okay, cool. We don't have to worry about the double play anymore. Still got to put the ball in play, though.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Pedro Paul goes down, swinging, and then Michael Ciani grounds out to first base, ends the inning. Cardinals wasted a lot of chances on Tuesday. We're kind of used to seeing that this year. They were over seven with runners in scoring position. They left eight men on. The team is now hitting a paltry 213 on the season
Starting point is 00:05:21 with runners in scoring position. That's the third worst batting average with runners in scoring position in the league ahead of only the White Sox in Oakland, too, of the worst teams in baseball. I don't think you can put the Cardinals as one of the bottom three teams in all of baseball. I don't think you can do that. So the fact that they're hitting as low as they are with runners in scoring position with these guys, it's a problem.
Starting point is 00:05:45 You know, I brought it up last week. We got in depth into it on the stats and stuff. And the next game, though, after I mentioned stuff like that, that's when the team actually hit very well with runners and scoring. position. So hopefully that trend continues tonight when they play the Pirates again. And don't get me wrong. I know Skeens is really, really good. He's tough. And we should give him credit, but this has been a problem all year for the Cardinals. It doesn't matter who's out there on the mound. So to have not one but two strikeouts in that situation was pretty crippling. When Skeins was
Starting point is 00:06:18 removed from the game in the seventh inning, something that has been brought up a lot today. that because I watched the game on TV. I wasn't at Ploish Stadium, but it appeared on TV that the Cardinals fans gave schemes a standing ovation for his efforts. So I posted a poll question on whether or not anyone had an issue with this because, you know, Cardinals fans have always been very gracious
Starting point is 00:06:40 towards their opponents when the time is right. If the opponent makes a great play, does something special or is doing something special on the mound, they are acknowledged by the Cardinal fans. It's something that they've always done, a very polite fan base, usually very, very nice to the opposing players. This is nothing new. But it's not like the dude was throwing a no-no at the time or a perfect game or something.
Starting point is 00:07:04 And, you know, he deserved like extra attention for it. I was a little surprised by the reaction. I don't have a problem with it. If you want to stand up and cheer for the other team's pitcher because you're like, hey, that was cool. We got to see Paul Skeen's. By all means, go for it. I don't have a problem with it at all.
Starting point is 00:07:21 I don't. I just was a little surprised that the standing ovation happened for them. That just caught me off guard a little bit. So a poll question whether or not you thought that what they did was the right thing to do or whether it was the wrong thing. 72% of people at the time of where I'm at the vote right now says, no, he earned the ovation. And the remaining 28% feel that the ovation was a little bit soft by the Cardinals fan base. you know, and I can see both sides a bit. But like I said, I don't really have a problem with it.
Starting point is 00:07:56 I was just a little caught off guard by it. Now, I did get one person's point of view who was at the game on Tuesday night. His name was Nathan Murley, wrote me on Twitter X, and here's what he said. I was there and still stand by the fact that we weren't cheering for schemes as much as we were cheering for Aronado for laying out that double after his unassisted double play. The cheering continued in strength because the video board, does to get up and get loud. So there's another aspect of it. Again, watching it from TV, I look like everybody stood up because Scheen's was leaving
Starting point is 00:08:27 the game and they were really happy for what Paul Skeens just showed them. But if it's the other way around, that's a different take from someone who was actually in attendance as opposed to how it looked on television. So again, not try to stir the pot or anything. I was just curious how everyone felt about it is all. So if you want to vote in the poll, you can do that. It's still left there on Twitter X. at L0 underscore Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:08:51 So it's scoreless until the ninth inning. Helsley comes on and that's when the trouble begins for the Cardinals. We'll talk about the ninth inning, the decision that took place with not pinch hitting for Michael Ciani, plus some early trade discussion from Katie Wu at the athletic. Plus Rickwood Classic uniforms and hats got dropped today. We're going to have that later on for you as well on Locked on Cardinals. Here on Locked on Cardinals, we probably.

And today asking you about the ovation with Paul Skeen's last night, also getting your opinion on these Rickwood classic uniforms that the boys are going to be wearing against the Giants. I'll show them to you here in just a little bit. But first, let's get to the ninth inning of last night's game. Ryan Halsley, one of the top closers in the league. You know this.
Starting point is 00:13:56 I know this. and every once in a while, it doesn't matter who you are. Starting pitcher, relief pitcher, doesn't matter. There is going to be a game where you don't have your good stuff. Tuesday night, Ryan Helsley did not have his good stuff. Hadn't pitched in four days. So people saying he's overworked, that's a crock. He wasn't overworked.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Hadn pitched in four days. Just didn't have his good stuff. He walks the lead off hitter on four straight. as a pitch clock violation to start the next hitter, Andrew Bucchard gives up a single, then walks the next hitter, Brian Reynolds on four straight pitches. Everything was down and out of the zone. Whether it was a breaking ball, whether it was a fastball, didn't matter, 10 pitches, two walks and a single.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Just a bad night. Just a bad night for the Cardinals closer and one of the best closures in the league. He's going to be an all-star. I can almost guarantee you that. He's going to be an all-star. but the dude is human. He is human. Had a couple of tough outings against the Cubs and Reds recently, but looked just fine against the Phillies, against Houston, against Colorado. He's not overworked. That's not what that was. He just had an off night. Just a tough night. It happens. Pirates end up plating
Starting point is 00:15:15 two in the top of the ninth because of those issues. Cardinals get one back in the ninth when Nolan Gorman matches his 15th home run of the season, puts him in a tie for seventh most in Major League Baseball. He's now tied for fourth in the National League. Pretty good, considering how he started the season. So very impressive by Nolan Gorman. Unfortunately, the Cardinals end up threatening with two outs for mean walks. You get the Yvonne Herrera catcher's interference call, which initially ruled a foul tip.
Starting point is 00:15:46 But replay got it right. They went back to it. Holly came out. It was like, no, no, no, no, no, no. You know, the pirates are shaking hands. They're like, game's over, we're out of here. And Ali's like, no, no, no, you got to check this. And luckily, they did.
Starting point is 00:15:59 Went and looked at it, got to play right. It hit the bat hit the catcher's glove. It wasn't the ball. Got it right. Yvonne Herrera got to take first base. But then came the next hitter, which was Michael Ciani, who we know is not a great hitter. That's not his strong suit.
Starting point is 00:16:16 His strong suit is defense, speed. That's what he's out there for. And instead of going to the bench, he lets Michael Siani hit. Michael Siani puts up a good at bat, but he strikes out swinging, ends the game. Cardinals lose. Now, some believe that Ali should have gone to Brandon Crawford or Dylan Carlson instead in that situation, which is easy to say now because Siani didn't get a hit. But Carlson is terrible at hitting against right handers.
Starting point is 00:16:45 He's terrible at it. And he's been that way for quite some time now. Siani's numbers are better against Ritey's than Dillon Carlson. All right, what about Brandon Crawford? This is the same Brandon Crawford where people thought he should be DFAid. Heading 194 against Ritees this year. That's who you want him to bring it instead. And I understand that you can make the argument,
Starting point is 00:17:09 hey, it's a veteran over a rookie, but bottom line is none of these options are any good. You know, you don't have Wilson Contreras, Newt, Jordan Walker, Tommy Edmund, they're not there. So the depth that you were hoping you'd have available for situations just like this, it's not there. And those are just the facts. Whoever you were going to put up in that situation,
Starting point is 00:17:32 Siani, Carlson Crawford, none of them are great options. They're just not. Solid baseball game that doesn't go the Cardinals way. And the two stars of the game and Michaelis and schemes, they don't even get in on the decision despite their great games. Michaelis now has not won a game at home since his final start of 2023. We're in the month of June, guys. 0 and 2 this season at home for no decisions.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Helsley takes the loss. He falls to 2 and 3. Colin Holderman gets the win. He moves to 2 and 0. David Bednar picks up his 14th save. Pirates finish with just three hits and become only the third team to win a game of Bush Stadium since 2016, getting three or fewer hits. According to Rob Raines at STL Sportspage.com.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Shout out to him. Always great with the stats. He also points out the Cardinals now have a record of 34 and 3 in those games over the last eight years. It says this was the 14th time. A Cardinals pitcher has allowed only one hit and no runs over seven or more innings in a game at Bush Stadium 3. It's only the third time that the Cardinals did not win the game with the other two losses coming in extra innings. This was an anomaly because this isn't how it normally shapes out, but a loss all the same. standings-wise, the Cardinals drop into the basement of the NL Central again at 31 and 34.
Starting point is 00:18:48 The Pirates elite from the basement and are now in second place. It's how tight everything is at 32 and 34 because the Brewers, the Cubs, the Reds, they all lost on Tuesday night as well. Cardinals are now seven back of Milwaukee. Pirates are six and a half back. So we could see another flip-flop tonight if things go the same way. And instead the Cardinals come out on top and the Pirates lose and those other teams lose. Could have it again.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Cardinals are going to be in second place. So wild card-card wise, cardals are a half game out despite going four and six in their last 10. This third wild card spot, as Ethan Smith from Locked on Pirates and I talked about yesterday, it's going to keep a lot of teams in the running with dreams of making a run like the Phillies and like the Diamondbacks did, the last couple seasons in the National League. And if the Cardinals want to be one of those teams, improvements are probably going to need to be made. Now, we can say they getting Jordan Walker back. By the way, big night last night for Memphis.
Starting point is 00:19:43 three for five hit his second home run of the season with Memphis on Tuesday night. Wilson Contreras on his way back. Tommy Edmund was in the cage. We saw footage of that. He's on his way back. Lars Neupar haven't seen much because he's dealing with that oblique, but he's trying to come back from the IL. You get all four of those guys back into your lineup.
Starting point is 00:20:04 That's like making a massive trade, which would be a very John Moseil-like approach to it. And I know Cardo's fans aren't going to like that. but if they were to make any deals, what kind of stuff would they be looking for? Well, Katie Wu from the Athletic put out a piece discussing that very same thing. And we're going to tackle that. Plus, I'll show you what those Rickwood classic uniforms and hats look like.
Starting point is 00:20:27 They just got released just a little bit ago. So we'll have them for you coming up here in just a moment on Locked on Cardinals. Passion driving patience. Locked on its launch to first ever national sports 24-7 street. streaming channel on YouTube and it's now also available on Amazon Fire TV and the free fire TV channels app locked on sports today is here for you 24-7 covering the top sports stories of the day with the local experts of locked on plus our national shows which cover every league find locked on sports today now available on the free fire TV channels app so I'll put the link in the description for everyone but here are some of Katie Wu's thoughts she covers the Cardinals for the athletic she's been on the show before this is a
Starting point is 00:22:19 some of her thoughts about the Cardinals and the trade deadline coming up. She says, based on their needs, expect the Cardinals to be in the market for depth pieces. This includes in their rotation and off the bench. The lack of depth, both in the 40-man roster and in AAA, has been a focal point of the season and has left the Cardinals exposed in multiple ways over the first three months. As currently constructed, the most glaring gripes of the roster included severe lack of starting pitching depth and no true right-handed bats off the bench. At best, the active roster is one-dimensional.
Starting point is 00:22:51 At worst, it's dysfunctional. Some of the roster woes will be addressed when key players return from injuries, which I mentioned just a little bit ago, like making a trade, right? Would St. Louis benefit from pairing another top starting pitcher with Sunny Gray? She says, duh, but once more, the front office finds itself in the predicament of trying to improve the club without overspending. For now, expect Moseilock to continue the train. of identifying middle of the rotation type pitchers to pair with Gray and Kyle Gibson. So what do we take from this?
Starting point is 00:23:26 I take that it's going to be more of the same from the Cardinals like you saw in 2021 and 2022. 2022, you get the deals for Jose Cantana and Jordan Montgomery. Outstanding deals. Those were solid. I'd take both of those guys back if I could, wouldn't you? imagine the rotation with that with gray Kyle Gibson Montgomery Kintana and Lance Lennon. Pretty good. Pretty good.
Starting point is 00:24:01 And Miles Migolus, obviously, too. They targeted John Lester and it was J.Hap for that team in 2021. Remember when they went on that 17 game winning streak, which was just nuts. And I remember at the time thinking like, what are they? John Lester and J. Happ? You kid me, right? It worked out pretty well. Last year, they traded away assets, which sucked. But this year is disappointing as it's been. It still feels like to me there's some hope there. And I know we've got naysayers. They're like, nope, trash, trade everybody, get rid of Goldie, get rid of Aronado, do it.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Just start over from the ground up. I don't think that's necessary because, again, the return of, I mean, think about these players that are supposed to be coming back. Wilson Contreras, obviously huge. One of the best hitting catchers in all baseball. Tommy Edmund, how big has he been for this team over the years? Lars Neupar gets hurt a lot, but when he's in there, pretty good. Jordan Walker. Are we going to get the guy back from last year?
Starting point is 00:25:11 Who was very impressive in the second half. Stephen Mats. What do you want? from him. Do you want him to be a starter? Do you want him to be in the in the relief role? Wherever you need him, I guess. Riley O'Brien, we had a lot of, a lot of excitement about him coming into the season. Giovanni Gallegos, I know, regressed. I know, but these players could be quite significant, especially the offensive side, which is what I'm more worried about than the pitching. I think the bullpen's been pretty good, right? Starting rotation, you want to add some depth,
Starting point is 00:25:47 Matt would add to that, but I could still see the Cardinals going out and trying to find somebody. But the offensive side of things, which is where the team has struggled, getting Willie Edmund, Newton Walker. I mean, you're expected starting outfield and you're starting catcher back, who was like your cleanup hitter, number five hitter or worse? I mean, how many teams can lose their entire starting outfield and just, yeah, we're fine. Probably not many. Probably not many. So I wouldn't expect like a Luis Robert Jr. or Garrett Crochet type of deals. Somebody else will give them a hall, somebody who's closer to being world championship caliber. I would expect sensible and calculated moves that don't make headlines, but hopefully make this team a better all-around
Starting point is 00:26:34 team when they are fully healthy. I know it's boring, but Cardinals are kind of boring when it comes to this stuff, aren't they? Sunny Gray on the bump tonight, looking for a bounce back performance after the start against the Rockies, which didn't go great. The Bucks will counter with long-haired left-hander, Bailey Falter, who got beat up pretty good by the Dodgers who just beat the snot out of the Rangers on Tuesday night. So bad that former Cardinal catcher Andrew Kisner came in in the seventh inning and actually pitched pretty good. He didn't give up a hit, gave up a sack fly because he came in with runner on third.
Starting point is 00:27:11 And then I got everybody else to get out. It was actually quite good. considering he was throwing between 47 and 53 miles per hour. But anyway, the Dodgers beat up on a lot of people. So they beat up on Bailey Falter last time. But back in the month of May, Falter was one and no, had a 2.23 ERA. So it's not like he's some scrub.
Starting point is 00:27:31 27 years old, long-haired left-hander. We'll see what the Cardinals can do against that. A lot of lefties on this team. So I would imagine you'll see Dylan Carlson back in the lineup because he hits lefties much better. But we'll see what they counter with. also let me do this real quick the new Rickwood classic uniforms
Starting point is 00:27:49 and hats got released today for when the Cardinals and Giants play later this month they'll play on June 20th in Birmingham here's a picture of the hat sorry for you guys who are listening audio-wise you won't get to see it but there's the hat navy blue with the white STL on the front in different fonts not like the normal cursive look and STL that you see on the normal everyday half and here is the uniform which is a gray got a little orange and navy blue
Starting point is 00:28:22 I believe in there no names on the back which I always think is good I just like that classic look with no names on the back I think it's neat I'm a dork and I play MLB the show a lot and I always go with the old school cartil uniforms I don't use the ones from the era today but what do you guys think of those good bad better worse than the city connect uh i asked that on the uh twitter x page at l o underscore cardinals and uh so far a lot of people saying they think it's worse than the city connects so i don't know drop your opinion below in the uh in the comment section on youtube let me know on twitter x i kind of dig them i kind of dig them i'm excited i'm excited to see this whole thing go down i think it's historic and i think it's going to be neat and hopefully
