Not that we ever root for injuries on this show, but is the Nolan Aronado injury actually a good thing for what the St. Louis Cardinals are trying to accomplish over the final two months of this season?

So on today's episode,
we're going to discuss what we just saw in the series in San Diego,
where the Cardinals dropped two of three.
We'll also preview the upcoming series against the Dodgers.
A lot of Otani expected in this particular series,
which is fun, I guess.
But let's start with the hot topic over the weekend,
and that is the future of Nolan Aronado.
Now, he was placed on the IL on Friday due to that shoulder strain.
and we know that Nolan Aranato is a gamer.
You know, he has played through injuries his entire career,
at least as far as I know with the Cardinals.
I don't know what he was like in Colorado.
I'm sure he was the same type of dude there too.
But injuries, he's always fighting through stuff,
sometimes to his own detriment because the production numbers take a hit.
They suffer when he does it.
But he's got guts, right?
He wants to be there for his team.
He wants to be out there for the fans.
to argue with those motives. We appreciate stuff like that. You know, you appreciate it in all
sports. You know, if somebody on the blues is dealing with an injury and is battling through it,
but doing it to help the team, like, you appreciate stuff like that. And you appreciate it from
Nolan Aronado and what he's wanting to do for the St. Louis Cardinals, despite being where they are
right now, which is below 500. This actually is just the second time in Aronado's five seasons that he's
actually been placed on the IEL. He missed the final two weeks back.
in 2023 had that sore back.
But the Cardinals were terrible at that point of the season.
It was already toast by then by the time he went on the shelf,
so no big loss there.
So we love that.
You know, it's a guy who will play hurt.
He's a team player.
Again, we applaud this.
I'm no doctor.
I don't play one on TV.
I don't play one on radio.
I don't know how long a shoulder strain is supposed to keep Nolan Aronado out of the lineup.
He's on the 10-day I.
which sucks or does it in a way now we don't like the injury we don't want Nolan Aronado
injured we that's that's not what I'm trying to say here but you see now that the trade deadline
has come and gone and the dust is settling that this injury is much of it being a bummer for
Nolan Arnado it's going to actually allow the Cardinals to do something that they wanted to do
since the very beginning.
And that was give some runway to other players, younger players.
It's going to allow the Cardinals and manager Ali Marmal to let some of these guys play more,
specifically Nolan Gorman and Thomas C.C.
In this year of runways, which I'm so sick of saying over and over,
neither of those guys, though, have really had much of a shot in an everyday job.
They really haven't.
The main reason being that,
Oliver Aranaato was still on this roster, despite attempting to trade him in the offseason
and actually successfully doing so, they had a deal done with the Houston Astros.
They found somebody to bite and take him.
He vetoes the deal.
Cardinals never got another offer that was, you know, either to their liking or to a place
that Nolan wanted to go.
And so back to third base for the Cardinals, he went.
And we weren't mad about it necessarily.
when it happened, I knew it was going to cause problems, not like personnel problem as far as
like, like who he is and stuff. That's not it at all. But for what the Cardinals wanted to do this
year and what they wanted to see, this was going to be an issue because now you've clogged up a spot
on the roster and in the lineup that multiple guys can rotate through. You know, it's not just
Gorman. It's not just C.J.C. but Brennan Donovan could play some third base too. So there was a other
guys who could go through there, and it was all blocked.
And early on the season, it didn't seem like such a bad thing when the Cardinals were
winning, did it?
You know, it was Nolan being Nolan, and he had some decent offensive numbers early
on in the season.
The defense has played really, really well all year for him.
But, yeah, it just didn't mesh with what they were trying to accomplish.
And it was just completely contradictory to what the season was supposed to be about.
The only runway guy who actually got any runway this year was Jordan Walker,
but he didn't really get it either because he's dealt with injuries on and off.
So that whole plan has been a bust too.
So anything the Cardinals really wanted to try as far as like the office of players,
none of this worked.
None of this worked at all.
Victor Scott, I guess, has gotten the bulk of the playing time in center field and that's great.
But the two guys, Corbyn and Walker, who they really wanted to see,
It hasn't worked out at all this season.
But with Arnaano out of the picture right now due to the injury,
which again, we're not rooting for it.
We're not saying it's a good thing.
I'm just saying that because of this situation
and that Gorman is healthy again after dealing with yet another back injury,
you're seeing him get more time at third base.
So J.C. has also seen some time there.
We know they can both play second base if needed.
Like on Sunday when Brennan Donovan was a late scratch due to a family emergency,
You had C.J.C. You had Gorman in. You had Mason win over there at Shortstop. So you had that nice young infield that you were hoping to grow with this year. You had it all together. But this is what the organization wanted in the first place. That's what they wanted it to look like this year.
To see these guys play more and really get a feel for what they can and can't do on an everyday basis. Some guys have a knack for coming off the bench and doing well. Others have trouble.
finding a comfort zone at the plate when they don't see enough action.
And I think Gorman is certainly one of those guys.
And C.C., you know, he hasn't really shown me that he is a bench type guy because he
has hardly hit a lick this season when he has gotten at bats.
But at Memphis, when he plays every day, Thomas C.C. is hitting, what, 317?
Over 189 plate appearances?
Like, you'll take that.
You'll certainly take that.
And then with the majors in St. Louis, he's 107 appearances, 230.
Now, sure, the competition level is much better in the big leagues,
but I can't help but believe that not being in the lineup on a regular basis
hasn't also led to some of the struggles that both of these guys have faced.
For Gorman, we know how streaky he can be.
You know, when he does get hot, he's one of those guys who can carry you for a week
at a time. But he had that ice cold start to the year, lack of playing time. They didn't know where to
put him and how to get him in the lineup. They couldn't put him in there against lefties because they
didn't trust him. And now the back injury has set back any runway that he started to build up because
he started to hit better. And then he goes down. It's been a mess of the season. Nothing has really worked
the way that the Cardinals had hoped it would. And they also were winning games early on, too. So it was
hard to really maneuver the lineup too much because you're like, wait a second, we're actually
winning. We were actually in this wildcard chase for a while there and ending the division
race for a while there. And so they didn't want to alter too much with that too because it's like,
well, let's take advantage of this. And that has all ended. And now Cajee and Gorman both have a
window of opportunity to showcase their talents and give the Cardinals something to think about
this offseason moving towards 2026 when they're going to have to make a decision of some sort
on where all these guys are going to play both with the Cardinals, you know,
if they're going to keep them, how are they going to maneuver this whole situation?
Or do they move some of these guys on to another organization because J.J. Weatherholt,
he's coming and he's coming in hot.
Had another huge day. Kid is raking at Memphis.
And as much as I would love to see him in St. Louis this year,
and I think a lot of people would.
And it could happen.
It still could happen, but there's already so many mouths to feed, right?
Like you've already got so many people that you want to see play.
And so adding his mouth to that equation, I don't think that's maybe the best idea.
You don't bring him up to just sporadically play him.
Like if you're going to bring up J.J. Weatherhole, you're going to want him in the lineup all the time.
And with Gorman and C.,
already needing those reps and needing those at bats and needing to be seen.
It might just be best to keep JJ down until next year.
And when Nolanardo comes back, there's some people who think Arnado may not come back.
That maybe this is the end of his season with his shoulder injury.
I don't know how severe that shoulder strain is.
But even if he comes back, playing time is going to get sliced up again.
So now does Nato need to play every day?
No, no.
He doesn't need to play every day the rest of the way.
But if he's healthy, he's going to see action.
He's got to play, you know, four days a week, three, four days a week.
But for now, he's not here.
He's out.
I hope he gets healthy, not wishing anything ill will towards Nolan Aronado at all.
I love watching this dude play.
I hope he gets back healthy.
And I hope, you know, he gets some rest.
And he comes back and if he does come back, he's better.
than ever, but there's no rush. Take your time, dude. We got some homework to take care of while you
mend up. We got we got some guys. We need to get into the lineup and check out as we think about
26. So, and we certainly missed his glove this week. And my goodness, his glove at third base.
You know, when you have something that good and you take it for granted, you know, and that is
something that the Cardinals have had is a really good defense over at third base for quite a long time now.
no one obviously being a big part of that.
And that wasn't necessarily what we saw on this weekend.
So we're going to talk about this Padre series.
That's going to come up next year for you on lockdown curtains.
Time to fuel up and turn it up with five-hour energy transfusion.
It brings the bold, grape, ginger, and lime flavor of your favorite golf drink minus the alcohol.
Into a quick, energizing shot, whether you're seeking birdies or just making memories with friends,
this is a hole in one for your energy game.
And I recently was playing golf with some friends at a tournament, charity tournament.
I'm not good.
It wasn't like a tournament where I was doing anything special.
But you get excited when you first get out of there on the course,
even though it's 8 o'clock in the morning, which is not my time to be awake.
And then you start to wane a little bit as you start to get towards the middle of the 18 holes that you're playing.
And five-hour energy transfusion is going to give you that extra boost to help you stay sharp and energize both on the course.
It also helps me off the course, too.
The grape ginger lime flavor.
It gives you the best parts of your clubhouse go-to without chasing down the bev cart.
And again, it's going to help of anything, whether it's just focusing at work, whether it's going to the gym.
It's awesome.

Curious about your thoughts with this Nolan Aronado stuff.
Do you secretly hope that he's done?
for the year. So you can watch not because you want to have hurt, but because you want to be able to watch G.
G. Weatherholt at some point. Let me know in the comment section. Not a great weekend for the
Cardinals. I feel like it was an expected weekend, a predictable weekend for this team.
Losing two of three in San Diego did not surprise me whatsoever. They fall four to one on Friday.
They get the win on Saturday, eight to five, but then they lose the rubber match on Sunday,
seven to three in a game that really wasn't nearly as close as that final score says it might be.
Friday's game can be summed up in one phrase, really.
More errors than run scored, which is not something you ever want to happen.
That phrase should make you vomit in your mouth at least a little bit,
if not a whole bunch, if you're a Cardinal fan.
That was bad baseball.
That was not fun to watch for the Cardinals.
Two throwing errors, one by Nolan Gorman and one by Wilson Contreras.
The other one was by Ryan Fernandez.
but those two errs by Gorman and Contreras led to three earned runs and a bounce Matthew Libert
tour after just four and a third innings.
Libby ends up giving up four runs, but only one of those runs was earned, but also only
struck out one header.
And he walked to.
So not exactly the balance that you're looking for.
Bulpin wasn't bad, though, on Friday.
Sonson, Grisufo, Ryan Fernandez.
Welcome back, Ryan Fernandez.
They look fine.
but no offense equals no winning.
It doesn't matter if your team gives up one run.
If your pitching staff does so good and you can't score any,
that's a problem.
The only run came on a home run by Wilson Contreras.
The team had just four hits,
only one against starter Nick Povetta,
who's been very good this year.
Let's not take anything away from who Nick Povetta is.
Like, he's a very good pitcher.
So tough day for the Cardinals at the plate.
You want more out of them.
You want to see more out of them.
but sometimes you just get burned, you know, the pitching staff for the San Diego Padra.
This is a playoff team.
This is a team that's going to the playoffs.
And Nick Pabeta has been excellent this year.
And he carved up the Cardinals on Friday night.
Saturday it was Michael McGreevy Day for the Cardinals, which is always exciting.
And although it started off very bumpy.
He got knocked around a little bit early on in that game.
The Cardinals fell into another hole.
It was four to nothing.
but the offense, which has been, you know, one of those offenses that never says die,
bounces back.
They get that huge three-run home run by Pedro Pahas, just a monster shot into left field.
At a time when a lot of us are, and I'm talking about like media people and guys that cover the car,
he's talking about how horrible Pedro Pajas has been at the plate and he comes up with this
massive three-run shot, which is really nice to see.
it kind of flips the switch for McGreevy.
All of a sudden, McGreevy was incredible over his final three
innings after struggling through the first three.
Could have been nerves just pitching in San Diego.
That was his favorite team growing up.
Parents were in the stands.
Maybe that's what it was all about.
Also, the Padres are freaking good.
They're a very good offense.
Again, this is a playoff team.
They went out and made a number of moves at the trade deadline,
aggressive moves to make a, you know, give themselves,
a chance to make another run in the National League playoffs.
Like they're still gunning for the Dodgers in the NLS.
They haven't given up on that dream.
But they're certainly a team that's, I don't know how people are going to catch him in the
playoff chase.
So, you know, like in the division, the Reds went out and made some moves.
And I just don't know if they have the horses to keep up with what the Padres did.
But, you know, they got two months to figure it out.
But McGreevy, after he settled in, the offense kind of woke up.
up for the Cardinals and eventually they took that lead on the Mason win to run double and end up
taking game two. And with the pitching depth issues that this organization has right now,
partially due to bad player development and partially due to injuries that have happened in the
organization to see McGreevy pitch better in those last three innings, that was kind of a kind of
sigh of relief moment there because, you know, he got rocked in his last.
outing. He did not get off to a good start in this one. You're like, oh boy, oh boy, here we go.
And I know I wasn't the only one panicking a little bit. I see you guys responding to things
on X and, you know, like this guy, people wanted this guy ever fed about it. They were going
crazy. And it was just nice to see. Like I said, sigh of relief. Also, his parents were
Do McGreeley's parents now?
Did you see that interview that they had during the telecast?
Those guys are awesome.
Absolutely awesome.
Love that interview during the game.
Cardinals improved their record of 47 and 2 when leaving or leading after the seventh inning.
I'm not sure how that's going to hold up over the next couple months because of all the trades they made to their bullpen.
But needless to say, that's pretty impressive for the team this year.
Then on Sunday the offense just gets abused again over eight innings by Dylan C.
in the friars bullpen, only one hit going into the ninth inning.
They look completely overmatched at the plate.
And, you know, this is a guy in Dylan Cease who, you know,
it wasn't that long ago that Cardo fans wanted him in a Cardinals uniform.
You know, that was something they were looking forward to when he was with the
white socks.
I like, that would make a lot of sense.
Didn't get the deal done.
Got Eric Fettie instead.
But who knew that his, you know, C,
would go the way it's been going for Dylan C's because we know he's got nasty stuff.
We know he's better than what his numbers have shown this season.
But at the same time, he's still three and ten with an ERA near five.
But he was on his game on Sunday.
It looked like Cy Young candidate dominating the Cardinals over five.
Then he's he allowed no runs.
One hit.
He struck out nine.
He wasn't walking people.
Wasn't giving up the home runs, which has been a big problem for him this year.
So had to run into hot Dillon cease in this one, didn't we?
Palante dodges troubles over and over and over.
Yeah, that's not Palante.
That's a big idea right there.
Just he was walking a tightrope the whole time,
finally gets clipped by Jake Croninworth, that two-run home run.
He wasn't particularly good at all.
Let's just be honest.
I mean, now why sugarcoat this stuff, right?
And then Gordon Grisopho, he ends up allowing four runs over two winnings, which blew things open.
Again, defense didn't help the cause.
It was seven to nothing in the ninth before the Cardinals somehow, somehow hit All-Star left-hander, which they don't hit either.
Adrian Morahone, they end up knocking him around, three runs on four hits and a walk.
Dude, didn't even record an out.
And of course, I pointed this out on X.
I picked him up in fantasy that morning and was like, oh, this is good because I had a feeling he was going to,
going to get in the game and no, it gets rocked.
Almost cost me my win this week.
But it was too little too late for the Cardinals, IRL.
So they fall in that one by a square of seven to three.
Fun game on Saturday.
The victory blues look great.
Offense was dominated on Friday and Sunday by two really good pitchers in Nick
Povetta and Dylan Cs.
Defense wasn't great.
Not having our not over third base clearly was,
is a difference. Again, we have been very spoiled with good third base defense for quite some time.
Aronado is incredible and he makes all these plays look so easy. And you can see the Padres
we're kind of picking on Gorman and the guys, you know, and Jaycee who are playing over at
third base. So as bad as Aronado's bat has been recently because of the shoulder, because
of the finger, we have learned quickly that life without him at third base is not a whole lot of fun either.
So, but we do have top prospect.
J.J. Weatherholt played a third base at Memphis on Sunday.
Didn't affect this hitting.
He had three more hits.
Had a home run in that game.
He's about 3.44 and 16 games at AAA Memphis combined on the year at double A and
AAA is hitting 310 with 13 home runs.
46 RBI.
16 stolen bases has done all of that in just 78 games.
The dude is a special talent.
Not sure if we're going to get to see them this year, but if I was
you, I would download the minor league baseball app, M-I-L-B, and I would watch some of the Memphis
Redbirds games. They're kind of fun to watch because you see a lot of what the future of this
organization is going to be in this team moving forward into 2026. A lot of them are down there
right now. You get C-Blaze Jordan, who they just traded for. So Quinn Matthews is still down there.
So Jimmy Crooks, the catcher. You're seeing a lot of them are down there, and it's kind of fun to
watch. So it might want to check that out.
Dodgers coming up on deck.
Now we've got to go to L.A.
and life ain't going to get much easier there either.
So we'll preview that series next for you.
Coming up on Locked on Cardinals.

Cardle's got the late game tonight,
so you're going to be up anyway watching, right, right?
Cardo's now 56 and 57, so maybe you won't be.
And if they finish the year over 500,
honestly, I'd be very surprised.
I'd be very surprised just because they just don't have enough arms.
I expect the offense to be better than what we've seen.
I expect to see some of these young guys get better as the final months continue to roll on.
Some of them might wear down, just being honest, because it's a long season.
But, you know, I have optimistic thoughts when it comes to what this team could be going into 2026,
as far as letting some of these young guys grow a little bit.
But the lack of pitching depth is it's just going to be a massive hurdle to overcome.
as they wrap up these final two months.
And now they've got to go to L.A. to face the Dodgers, who had 65 and 47.
And despite having the third best winning percentage in baseball, it kind of feels like they've been a little disappointing this year, doesn't it?
Didn't you feel like they should just be running away with things?
They've dealt with a ton of injuries so far this year to their pitching staff, but they're getting people back healthy.
Blake Snell is back. Tyler Glass now is back.
The bullpen's still kind of in shambles.
They've had a lot of injuries there, too.
Cardinals did take two or three of them from at Bush Stadium back, what, beginning of June,
but these two teams are heading in completely different directions.
Sunny Gray will get the ball in game one on Monday against Tyler Glass now.
Sunny has not been good in his last three starts, 13 in the third innings, 17 earned runs,
30 hits.
The area is at 11.48.
All of that is awful, disgusting, terrible.
I don't have any other adjectives to use for it, to,
describe it. It's just trash. Absolute trash that we're seeing from Sunny Gray right now.
He's trying to work on it. He's trying to turn things around. It's not a lack of giving a
crap or anything like that. He's just having a bad run right now. And I'm not sure how things
are going to improve for tonight's matchup when you've got to go up against the lineup that
feature show Hey Otani, Mooky bats, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, just studs up and down the lineup.
One name that likely won't be around, and I haven't seen in a official
transaction on this yet.
But Tommy Edmund might be headed for the IL.
He tweaked his ankle again.
And that has proved to be.
It's been a problem that he's been dealing with all season.
And his numbers have been awful.
He's not been good since he hurt the ankle earlier in the season.
So yeah, still haven't seen anything on whether Tommy Edmund is going to the
IL or not.
But they got Max Muncie.
to come back from the IEL.
So that might just be the flip that they do there where one goes to the IL,
one comes back.
So we'll find out.
Meanwhile, Tyler Glass now, he's been hurt for most of the season,
had a rough start his last time out,
I believe it against Milwaukee,
who got to him a little bit.
But he's one of the more dominating right handers in the game when healthy.
And with the way the Cardinals bats have been recently,
I'm not all that optimistic that this team is going to do much in the game on Monday.
I hope I'm wrong.
I hope I am.
I hope they shred him.
and beat the snout out of them.
But the odds are not in their favor.
Let's be honest.
Michael is against Emmett Sheehan.
On Tuesday, she had one of the young pitchers for the Dodgers that they got a lot of hope for.
And then you got Libertura against that Shohei Otani guy who's scheduled to start on Wednesday.
Had to leave his last start because he had cramps against the Reds.
and didn't last very long on that one.
I don't know.
It was three, four, anything, something like that.
It wasn't super long, though, but he stayed in the game.
He still hit and hasn't had any issues since.
So we assume everything is a go for Otani on Wednesday.
So if you have lost faith in this team,
and it's very understandable if you have.
Nobody's saying it shouldn't be.
And if you're struggling to find a reason to watch him
and stay up late for these L.A. games,
at least know that you'll have a healthy dose of Show Hey, Otani.
It's expected to happen.
Best player on the planet should get a lot of game time over the next three days.
And you get to watch the Dodgers, who are a really good team.
And Cardo is going to be the underdog, and they're going to try to play spoiler in this one.
But Shohei is on the field.
So you should watch.
He's worth the price of admission.
