Day one of the 2026 NFL draft is officially in the books, and there's a lot of talent seeping into day two.
Let's get to it.
You are Locked-on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to Locked-on Colts.
I'm Zach Hicks, and that is Jake Arthur.
On today's show, we're going to be reacting and breaking down day one of the 26th.
NFL draft. The Indianapolis Colts did make a selection. They took cornerback sauce Gardner,
multiple time all pro with their first round pick in this one. So yeah, we were all sitting at home,
just watching what other teams were doing because the Colts made their pick back in the halfway
point of the 2025 season. But that doesn't mean there's not something to talk about in this draft.
So to close out today's show, Jake and I are going to just kind of react to what happened around
the league, some good, some bad, some crazy that went on. We're going to talk about that to close
out today's show. But the main conversation point tonight is going to be about the players available
and if Jake or I would be aggressive in going out and getting some of these players, because some
top talents did fall into round two that were, some were expected, some weren't expected.
So we'll go through that here. But when we're talking about the best available players, Jake,
I think the biggest thing for Colts fans right now is the fact that the two guys that every Colts fan
has talked about the most this draft season, Anthony Hill Jr., the lineback
from Texas and Jacob Rodriguez, the linebacker from Texas Tech.
Neither of those players did break into round one.
Although there was some whispers about the bills potentially taking Rodriguez,
the bills do have an early pick on day two.
So we'll see if that is a spot for them.
But as of right now, those two hopefuls for the Colts are still on the board.
And I think that's still the top of the list for a lot of Colts fans right now.
Yeah, and the good news about it is they're not the top players still available.
There's still plenty of first round talent.
You and I just talked about before hopping on that,
there's probably going to be a run at cornerbacks that goes,
and that should happen because in this league you have to be able to pass
and stop the pass.
So, you know, there's a bunch of corners like Jermond McCoy,
Avionteau, Colton Hood, DeAngelo Pons,
Brandon Cese, like Emmanuel McNeele-Warn,
lots of D.Bs out there still available,
which should push those linebackers that we've been talking about
down the board a little bit.
Even C.J. Allen is another one if you want to throw in the mix, kind of to make the linebacker group a little richer.
But yeah, I do think this is setting up pretty well for the Colts.
I thought heading into like there was maybe like five picks left in the first round, I was like, this is really stacking up well for the Colts.
But then some guys went off the board, of course, like Omar Cooper Jr. and I think Keldrick Falk.
But it's still, I think the Colts are still in really good shape heading into Friday.
Yeah, no, for sure. And we have some comments here talking about how Edge
rusher did kind of get decimated a little bit in day one, which is true.
Yeah, there were a lot of edge rushers that went in round one, but I don't think anybody that
we expected to be there for the Colts pick at 47.
Like Malachi Lawrence got so much buzz lately that we kind of- We knew he might be gone, yeah.
Yeah, I kind of assumed he wasn't going to be there at 47, but I still think there's some pretty
good edge rushers that fell to day two.
I mean, Cassius Howell out of Texas A&M, I know he's got shorter arms than me, so it is a little bit
tough to see Chris Ballard going for him.
But very productive, very bendy player.
And then T.J. Parker, a player that we've talked about a lot where, like, if he were there,
I could see the Colts taking him.
So T.J. Parker is still there.
Cassius Howell.
Other guys we've talked about Gabe Ockis is still on the board.
And Denis, Dennis Sutton still on the board.
So, like, Zion Young.
Like, those guys are still on the board.
So I do think that there are still a lot of past rushing talent on day two.
it's not going to be the greatest because there's never like the greatest past rushing talent on day two,
but they do have some guys that make sense for them, including T.J. Parker like I just mentioned.
Yeah, absolutely. And I think T.J. Parker personally, for me, is my best case scenario among all the
players that are still available for them. I think he would have been very deserving of being a first round
edge rusher. He's got the size. He's got the length. He's got play strength, you know,
content you know power through through contact and everything he's got college production like i realize
his numbers from 24 to 25 got about cut in half but his entire body of work still is very very productive
like there's a lot of guys who you know have been propped up a little bit through this whole process
who still don't even have his 2025 numbers that people are really high on so i think t j parker would be
a no doubt slam dunk for the Colts.
There are not very many edge rushers in this draft that could come in and start for the Colts right away.
And I do think he's one of very few.
Yeah, no, I agree.
I think T.J. Parker will talk about him more in segment two for sure in terms of potentially
getting aggressive.
But when it comes to, like those are the two big positions, right?
Edge and lineback, we've talked about all offseason.
But what about these like underrated, these sleeper positions and some of the talent that
fell?
I'm looking at cornerback right now, Jake.
and a lot of these top corners fell out of the round one,
whether for injuries, whether for, you know, other stuff that we can't really talk about,
whether it's size, like with DeAngelo Pons, who fell out of round one,
kind of expected, but I still would have taken him in round one.
Jermod McCoy and Colton Hood, both the Tennessee corners fell out of round one.
Avion Terrell, after hurting his hamstring, I think running his 40 at his pro day,
fell out of round one.
And then Brandon C-Saysay and DeAngelo Ponds as well.
So there is a lot of cornerback talent.
I think we're going to see a run on corners to start tomorrow,
which is well for the Colts getting a linebacker at 47.
But, yeah, there's a lot of corner talent that I think is going to go early on day two.
But Jake, I mean, if one of these guys are there for the Colts at 47,
I mean, do you pull the trigger on it?
Like, I mean, Ponds, I think would be really interesting.
Yeah, it's, it is intriguing, isn't it?
I mean, again, we really really.
realize it's not the most pressing need, but it's something we think they're going to address
at some point. As you broke down in the Indy draft guide, like Corner is tied for being the
position they've drafted the very most in the Chris Ballard era. So logic tells us they're
going to take one at some point in the draft. Why wouldn't they probably take one that ranks super
high on their board? I mean, you look at McCoy and hood. Really all of these guys, except for
maybe Ponds really fits the height, weight speed. I mean, Terrell's a little.
little thin, but like really good nickel there. If you want someone to come in and mix it up and
compete with Justin Wally, like I could see a definite reason for taking any of these guys.
I understand Jermon McCoy has the question about the knee and that's the only reason he's still
there. Otherwise, talent-wise, he should have been a first-round pick. But yeah, I think Corner is one
that we talked about. Safety is one that we haven't talked about getting second round buzz for the
Colts much. Like, we've been talking more.
third, fourth, fifth round. But Emmanuel McNabborn, it's got to be really high on their list.
And then defensive tackle, like, if they were really high on Caden McDonald, taking over for
Grover Stewart, Kristen Miller taking over for Grover Stewart in the long run, like, I can
understand that. Yeah, again, it's tough with the needs the Colts have to say, like, you know,
to sell people on Caden McDonald, for instance, in round two if he were to fall there at 47.
But, man, he's really good. Like, he's a really, really good. You want to stop the
run. There's not many better than him. Yeah, I would have taken Cade McDonald's in the top 32 in this draft. I don't know. Like, again, two down player, but you're going to get him so good on those two downs. Like, I don't know what the issue is here. Grover Stewart's a two down player. And we're not talking about kicking him off the team. Yeah, the NFL is running the ball so much now. Like, yeah, two down player. Those two downs are going to be very valuable. Get him into third and long, you know? So Caden McDonnell, McDonald, again, I don't expect him to be the Colts pick. But if he were, I wouldn't complain. I think he's awesome.
Emmanuel McNeil Warren, though, I'm so interested.
Again, we'll talk about him more in segment two, I think.
But man, if he were getting close to the Colts, yeah, we'll talk about that in a little bit more.
But some other really notable players that felt around two that maybe we're on that borderline,
Chase Basantis, the interior offensive lineman from Texas A&M, one of my favorite players in the draft.
I had him as offensive guard number two in this draft.
He ended up falling behind Kalin Rutledge, who went to the Texas.
and then Denzel Boston, the wide receiver from Washington as well.
Very talented player.
I don't think he makes it to the Colts at 47.
I think he goes before the Colts pick,
but very, very talented player.
That would be a really cool player for the Colts if you were to fall to that pick.
Yeah, I think so.
And that's maybe someone we want to talk a little bit more about in segment two
because we know the Colts really are interested in those day two wide receivers.
But yeah, that's not really the type of guy we've been talking about much.
but, you know, in the same way that the Laiatu Latsu pick surprised us,
not because of the position, but because of the player,
that would be one that at no point did I ever think about Denzel Boston being a cult,
but maybe you never know.
Yeah, you never know.
So coming up, guys, we're going to talk about some more of these players
where, like we mentioned, Manuel McNeil Warren,
some of these linebackers, T.J. Parker,
are any of these players worth moving up in round two for the Indianapolis Colts?
We're going to talk about that in just a second.
The NFL draft is here, guys, and every pick is a tradable moment on call sheet.
I talked to you guys earlier about how the draft really got started at pick two.
Will it be David Bailey or Arvel Reese going into the draft?
They were at basically a 50-50 split.
It ultimately was David Bailey.
We talked about linebackers.
How many would go in the first?
Two plus, three plus.
Depending on how you categorize Arvel Reese, you know, Reese.
Reese, you know, Reese and Sunny Stiles went.
But on Colchie, you're trading against your peers in a live market, meaning there's no house.
And as the probability changes, you could buy in and out of your position.

We love talking with you guys all day long about,
especially draft stuff right now.
The rumors are always kind of at,
a fever pitch.
Speaking of rumors and stuff and kind of throwing wrenches into the thing,
into the next act,
is there anyone that is still available here in the second that you would consider
trading up for?
Because, like,
there's some of the good players that we really,
ideally wanted the Colts to get at 47,
but there's a handful here who probably will be gone by the top 40 or so.
Like,
would you be enticed to trade up if you're the Colts?
probably wind up giving up like a fourth and a six or so.
I don't know.
Like you don't want to give up a third.
I wouldn't, you know, that's too much.
But would you give up like a fourth and a six for anyone here?
Yeah.
Again, we want to stipulate here that we're not really speculating for the Colts here
because the Colts are not trading up.
I wouldn't think so.
Yeah.
If they do trade up, it would be for one or two spots.
It just knowing Chris Bowley, he's not trading up.
He's probably going to trade back.
He's not going to trade up.
But talking about just the talent.
on the board and what we would do, T.J. Parker, man, I'd be tempted. I'd be very tempted. Like you said, Jake,
not the best 20-25, and that's why he fell out of round one, but he has a really good power profile. I think
he gives you a really solid floor. I think he's a type of player that you want to pair with a
layout to Latu, Latu, where Latu likes to go around offensive tackles. Parker likes to go through
offensive tackles. Those are the type of archetypes you want to put together on your defensive line.
So yeah, I would personally move up for T.J. Parker.
If you got to like pick 40, pick 41 to where you're maybe giving up like a fifth in some change or a fourth in some change, I would move up for T.J. Parker.
I think it would make a lot of sense for what the Colts are looking for.
He can be a base down starter earlier this season.
I think you feel a lot better about your defensive line if you're able to get him in here.
So he's one of the guys I circled.
And I'll throw this one back to you because I think you would.
and I both agree, even though it's not at one of the two big positions, Jake,
I think we would both trade up for Emmanuel McNeill Warren.
He would be so much fun next to Cameron Bynum, and he would make the defense so much better.
He would be an upgrade over what they got out of Nick Cross last year.
So if he's there at 40, if he's there at 41, like, yeah, personally, I would call, I would call at
least and try to get up there.
No, I love this guy.
So what is he, like, 6, 3, 205, 209, I think.
So he's got a big, strong safety frame.
He's got the athleticism and range of a free safety.
Very tough, hard hitter.
But he also wants to take the ball away.
He has a really good ball production as well.
He has the interception numbers.
He gets a bunch of force fumbles.
Like, there's nothing to not like about this guy.
He gets a little aggressive coming downhill, you know, maybe failing to wrap up on tackles and everything.
But that's kind of the life of a hard hitting safety.
he's not a detriment by any means in that area.
I didn't I didn't really see him, you know,
giving points up on on tape at all.
There was maybe some yards there,
but he's not a,
not a guy that I think you have to work with too much
on keeping under control.
But the traits are just there.
And the mentality, he's so comfortable.
Like I understand there may be some apprehension
coming from a small school like Toledo,
but like the guy clearly knows how to play for,
ball. I would trade up a couple of picks for him. You know what I mean? I think he's well worthy. He could
have gone in the first, just kind of a victim of being in the same draft as Caleb Downs and
Dylan Phenomen. Yeah, no, I completely agree. And I still probably would have taken him in the first,
even with those guys there. There were some guys who went in the back half of the 20s there, which
I didn't fully agree with, which we'll talk about in the final segment. But yeah, I would pounce on
that if I could, if I were the cold safeties, kind of like linebackers where they devalue a little
bit and I think you can take advantage there. Speaking of linebacker though, Jake,
we're looking at this clump of linebackers that have fallen to day two. I mean,
C.J. Allen, Anthony Hill Jr., Jacob Rodriguez, Jake Gold Day, still on the board. Josiah
Trotter still on the board. There's a bunch of them, right? Do you move up for one of these guys,
is the big question? Or is let the board fall to you? Well, I think the very spirit of why the
Colts trade down is they, let's say they have a group of six players they really like.
They'll look to move down within six picks so that they can make sure to get at least one of those
guys, unless there's someone they love, then they'll stick a pick.
But if you just have a group of guys, you feel comparable about trade back, recoup an
extra pick or so, and then take whoever is your favorite left of those guys.
And with there being so many of the same type of guy available,
still, I would try and trade back if I'm the Colts.
Now, this thing could break terribly for them over the next 15 picks, whatever.
But at the same time, there's a bunch of corners that have to go off the board, too.
So I'm kind of getting the sense that the Colts are going to have at least two or three,
like really, really good, well-fitting players available to them.
Yeah, and I agree with that overall.
But I want to ask you, because you kind of broke it down really well for what the Colts are going
to view it as, right?
For you personally, though, when you're looking at these linebackers, is there one that you need to have over the others?
Or do you also fall in that same track where it's like, I kind of view all these guys in a similar kind of boat here.
I'd rather just the board fall to me and then evaluate there.
Or are you sitting here like I'm sure some Colts fans are where it's like, we need Jacob Rodriguez, no matter what, go up to 40 and get him.
He's perfect.
Where do you fall with that personally?
Yeah, I think you, if you're presented with it, you don't want to risk.
losing out on either Anthony Hill Jr. or Jacob Rodriguez. Again, pick your flavor. Maybe you think
Rodriguez is more cerebral and a more natural playmaker, so that's someone you don't want to give up.
As we've talked about a lot, Anthony Hill Jr. checks every single box, and he's a playmaker in his
own right. So I wouldn't personally want to be presented with those two guys being options,
and then trade back and lose both of them. Now, the Colts, maybe they feel differently because they can
get Golda or I don't know how they feel about Trotter but you know Trotter's an option as well.
They, you know, there's other guys I think that they will like there.
It's just kind of their M.O.
Like if they don't feel like any of these guys are necessarily big time difference makers
and they may just want to add more picks to the board.
But me, I don't want to lose out on Hill or Rodriguez knowing that I didn't have to.
I'm assuming you feel similar.
actually i mean i think i've said this couple times i have trotter and allen above those two
um that's yeah that's good one rankings so i'd be more okay with just sitting back and waiting to see
who fell to me uh because even though i love trotter to death right i don't have them that much
higher than like hill who's my lowest rated of those four you know i don't have him so much higher
than hill to where like i'd want to give up extra capital for uh so i'm fine with letting the board
fall to me and potentially even trading back uh because i have those guys all viewed as like
second round picks.
So, yeah, I mean, I would be fine with waiting it out.
But again, if you think Rodriguez or Hill is that guy for you, go get them or stay at 47 and
take them for sure.
One more thing we need to address here before we get to our reactions to round one,
Dermond McCoy.
Now, he's at a very valuable position at corner.
We know how many corners end up playing for you in the NFL.
And it kind of reminds me of like Will Johnson's fall last year, right?
Out from Michigan, you felt like the mid-round two.
is there a range where, like, would you be fine taking him at 47 if you fell there?
Would you move up for him?
I mean, this was a top 10 pick a year ago at this time.
It's risky, but, like, if you have, like, a top 15 grade on him, I mean, you're a team that needs stars.
Like, if you view him as a potential star, you take him, right?
Yeah, I mean, if he clears your medicals, of course, but for me, he missed what, like, the entire year and then still wasn't really ready to participate in all the draft stuff?
Yeah. He's still available now.
I mean, Will Johnson is even kind of a cautionary tale because people were concerned about injuries.
And then he did spend a good chunk of his rookie season injured for Arizona.
So as enticing as it is as a player, you really have to look past a huge yeah-but with the knee.
And again, it's a knee.
And it was what, an ACL that he still somehow wasn't fully recovered from.
So that I think, I mean, I don't know the specific.
so I don't want to make assumptions, but like,
that's not very common anymore for an ACL to take that long.
So I would have major pause.
I probably wouldn't, like, it sucks to be the team,
one of the teams that maybe loses out on that,
but it's the majority of the NFL that's fast enough on this guy right now.
Yeah, no, I completely get it.
I think it was something we're talking about,
but I think I do agree with you where this team needs immediate contributors.
I don't know how immediate it's going to be with him at this point.
a lot of talent.
I think he's going to be a good player,
but yeah,
I'm kind of with you in that same boat there.
But coming up,
Jake and I are just going to react to what happened on day one of the NFL draft.
The Colts didn't have a pick,
but some other teams did,
including a Kenny Pickett level quarterback going around one yet again.
I think the rest of it was actually fine
outside of a couple weird trade-ups.
But yeah,
we'll talk about that quarterback selection
and a couple other surprising moves from day one of the NFL draft.
All right, guys.

All righty, guys, we are back with just our reactions to day one.
We wanted to get that Colts content to you to start off today's show.
But obviously something else happened today, right?
There was day one of the NFL draft.
We had to at least get some of our opinions on record.
And look, Jake, I do think I am setting myself up for failure by criticizing this because
he's going to such a great situation, right, this quarter.
quarterback. Ty Simpson, going to the Rams at 13th overall, he's going to get time. He's going to get
Sean McVeigh, you know, doing his thing with him. Like, there is a very good chance that he
outplays my opinion of him. That being said, the prospect is like, I don't understand it. I don't
know what the appeal was with him. He's had like three good games his entire college career,
because this was only yours as a starter, and it came in the first half of the season. He had like
four different injuries throughout the year.
He's tiny, very middling traits.
I don't think he's got a good pocket presence.
I don't understand at all what this pick was.
It reminds me so much of like a Mack Jones selection in round one,
of a Kenny Pickett selection in round one where like, yeah, I mean, I guess even because
those guys were going to play.
And those guys played a lot of college football at least too, right?
Like Ty Simpson is like, he's not as young as Anthony Richardson.
was, but he played, like, as much football as Anthony Richardson.
And, like, there's no traits to really bank on, at least with Richardson.
It was like, yeah, big arm, a good athlete.
Simpson, it's like, man, man, athlete, let's go, you know?
Look, again, he might be awesome because he's going to be there with McVeigh and what McVeigh can do.
But I just do not understand it at all.
And the people are saying it's like Jordan Love again.
Jordan Love had arm talent.
Like, I don't know what it is with Simpson.
And what are you selling me on?
He played at Alabama?
Like, I just don't understand what it is.
And again, it'll probably work because it's with McVeigh.
I just don't understand it whatsoever.
I mean, I'm with you because, like, if you're the Rams,
I think every single thing you do matters.
You're trying to maximize your time that you still have Matthew Stafford to win a Super Bowl.
And like, I understand getting a quarterback of the future,
like grooming a guy behind Stafford and all that good stuff.
but you're really hanging your hat on everything you did in free agency.
Like I look at this and I see, you know,
your star receiver in Puka, Nukuwa is really in flux right now.
Like, he's had some injury issues and now he's got the personal stuff.
It's like he's a really big, important part of your offense.
So to have that guy in such limbo, I think is really risky.
And to me, you could have had a guy like Kenyon Sadiq has been mocked to them quite a bit.
Mikey Lemon and Omar Cooper Jr.
have been linked to them
quite a bit throughout the process as well.
I think maximizing Matthew Stafford's time
while you still have them was probably the better bet.
Like, identify the problems that have kept you
from getting back to the Super Bowl since you last were there
and try and fix them.
Like getting this guy who,
I think either Les Need or Sean McVeigh said tonight,
that he was going to compete with Stets and Bennett to be the backup,
Holy hell, does that not move the needle?
Well, to be fair, they say that about all young.
Like, the Colts said that about Richardson when they drafted in.
They have to say that, sure, but we know he's not starting.
Like, it just does nothing for you right now when you are in a very narrow Super Bowl window.
It's fair.
I'm fine with going quarterback.
I just don't like this quarterback, I guess.
And I still think he was QB2 in this draft.
I just, I don't, I'm more against.
Yeah, I'm more against the prospect himself.
I'm not against going quarterback here.
But I digress.
In division here with the AFC South,
a couple surprises with the Titans and the Texans.
Titans at four stuck,
and they took Carnell Tate,
the wide receiver from Ohio State,
a bit early.
I think he's solid.
I don't know if I would have taken on that high,
but I think you get a really good floor with him.
Then they traded back into the first round for Keldrick Falk,
the young upside run-defending pass rusher from Auburn.
I kind of like that move for them.
I think that was a pretty solid move.
Oh, sorry.
One second time.
Yeah, and then one more move that was made within division.
The Texans traded up for Kaelin Rutledge to potentially be their center this upcoming season.
And Rutledge, you know, I liked Rutledge a lot.
I had as a pretty good, you know, prospect in this draft.
To move an early third rounder and kind of do that to go up two spots to get them, I think is a bit much.
But I kind of like what they did there.
You know, Rutledge, I think, is a good player.
They just gave up a lot to go get them.
But in her division, they made some moves, made some trades.
Tennessee got some starters that I think are going to be some solid players.
Rutledge, I think, can be a solid starting center as well.
So, you know, some moves being made in the division.
I don't think it was the dumbest moves.
I don't think they were the smartest moves, but I think they made some decent moves there.
In terms of other notable moves here, Caleb Banks, going in the middle of the first round with the major foot injuries,
two injuries to the same foot as a 300 plus pound guy is very, very concerning to me.
So, yeah, I don't know about Caleb Banks going in that range there.
I'm a little bit, I get it.
Like in this draft, I don't think there were many guys with, like, superstar potential.
And I think Caleb Banks truly has that superstar potential.
But, yeah, 18th overall for a guy with those injuries who barely played last year,
certainly concerning for me.
Going to the NFC East, though, there were a couple of notable picks there.
Dallas going Caleb Downs in that outside the top 10.
And then going with Malachi Lawrence as well outside the 20s.
A little bit early for Lawrence, but again, you're swinging for the fences here.
You're trying to get that high upside pass rusher,
but getting Caleb Downs there in the middle of the first round as well.
I think that that is some awesome, awesome stuff, really good value there.
New York Giants getting Arval Reese and Francis Magoa.
Really good trench players.
I think that's going to be a really fun addition there for the Giants.
So I think they're building their team right with going in the trenches there.
Let's see, NIC East as well.
I mean, Washington going with Sunny Stiles.
Really fun stuff there.
Oh, and Jeremiah, I love going in the top three, not going in the top five,
not going in the top six, not going in top ten.
And Jeremiah, I love going third overall.
He's one of the highest paid running backs in the entire league.
That's great.
I mean, Jeremiah, I love now the expectation is he's got to perform like one of the highest paid running backs immediately out the gate.
We'll see how that goes for the Cardinals.
They're very, very good player, but very, very high expectations for him this year.
And then the other big news, the Chiefs trading up for a cornerback, Mansour Delane, six overall.
I think Delane is a good prospect.
Moving up for him to six, I don't love, but, you know, if that's your guy, that's your guy.
I think they redeemed themselves a little bit with the Peter Wood selection later on in the first round.
So ultimately not too bad for the Chiefs, but moving up for Delane, I don't think was the greatest process overall.
Philly getting Mackay Lemon, yeah, you guys mentioned that in the comments there.
I think that was another really good one.
Did we get any more?
You guys are talking about Anthony Richardson in the comments as well.
but yeah no it was a pretty notable first round i think there was a lot of cool moves made and some
interesting valuations made across the board uh but nothing that was really really that shocking
outside of like jeremiah smith going as high as he did like or jeremiah love going as high as he did
and mansor delane being like a trade up type player but uh we'll see how it all plays out here on day two
we'll see some of uh the the run on corners to start day two and see uh which linebacker fall so
the Colts, which edge rush or falls to the Colts.
Let us know in the comment section below, though, who you want the Colts to take at
