The Indianapolis Colts signed yet another Lou Anarumo player, plus they ink a wide receiver who has torched them in the past.
Let's get to it.
You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to Locked On Colts.
My name is Zach Hicks, and today we are going to dive into some of the questions that you guys sent us over on Twitter and on the Locked On Colts.
every day or club discord server. So make sure you are joining that in the future if you want to be
included in some of these Q and A's. But first, we're going to dive into the new signings at the
Colts made. They literally just made these signings as of recording this. Jake and I were all set to do
our just Q&A episode. And as we sat down, they announced these signings. So Jake is going to jump
on the Zoom calls with those players while I am knocking out this show. So the two players in question,
linebacker, Akeem Davis Gaither, and wide receiver, Nick Westbrook, Akina.
Now, Akeem Davis Gather, to start with him, played five years in Cincinnati under Luann Rumo.
Kind of a shocker, right, that he's coming to Indianapolis.
Only 28 years old started 13 games last season in Arizona.
The most starts of his NFL career had over 100 tackles with the Cardinals.
From what I always remember about him, a long-armed player, very aggressive downhill type of player as well,
much better in run defense than coverage, but it gives you a pretty good floor of your defense.
He's not a guy who's going to be a train wreck when he's on the field, but he's not going to be your absolute answer at the position.
So he can play a little bit of will linebacker.
He's got the experience in Anuromo system to probably be the green dot if it came down to it.
But ideally the Colts can maybe get a young green dot guy in the draft to go alongside Davis Gather.
Or maybe they can draft two guys and Davis Gather can just be that third guy up.
This gives the Colts a little bit more flexibility at what looked like the worst linebacker room in football.
going into the season. Now they have a player who has at least started some games and who's been
in the NFL for six seasons that knows what he's doing and knows how to play the position in this
system. So I like this signing. Obviously, it's not Bobby O'Caricay or like some kind of big flashy
signing at linebacker, but Akeem Davis Gaither is a player that I've been pounding the table for for the
last three off seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, even before Luann Remote got here.
I just like the size. I like the traits. I like the floor that he could give you as a
linebacker. And again, he's not perfect. He's not going to be some absolute savior for your team.
But I think he can give you some good cheat play at the position and be better than the Austin Ajikaze or the Jalen Carlis of the world.
So Akeem Davis Gaither locked up. I'm assuming it's going to be a one year deal to come back.
Reunite with Luana Rumo, which has been a big talking point since Luana Rumo came here to Indy.
Kind of speaks to how much his former players absolutely love him because how many former players we've
seen that have rolled through Indy the last couple years from Dermaine Pratt to, I mean,
Trey Hendrickson, it came down to the Colts and the Ravens, but Ravens just offer a lot of money.
Mike Hilton, Xavier and Howard coming out of retirement for it.
Like a lot of these guys want to play back with Louan Rumo yet again.
And we're seeing it with Akeem Davis Geither here.
Nick Westbrook-Akekeena at just a 28-year-old wide receiver, former Indiana Hoosier there at the
college level, was I think he was an undrafted free agent, played for the Tennessee Titans to
start his career, had a career high nine receiving touchdowns in 2024,
went to the Miami Dolphins this past year and just struggled to really find a role,
was more of a special teamer that didn't really see much time on offense.
But in this past, he's been a player that could give you some spare snaps out there,
probably miscast a little bit in Tennessee as like a starting receiver at times.
But a good special team or a good wide receiver four or five that is a big body player
that can catch some passes, above average run blocker as well.
So if you're looking for like the barest minimum that can replace Michael Pittman Jr.
in this offense, I think Nick Westbrook-a-Kine is suited for some of the blocking elements
and some of the big body elements that the role would ask of.
So again, it's just a floor raiser.
And I think that's what is so big about free agency is you're not going to find many
answers in free agency.
These guys are free agents for a reason.
And I'm not going to sit here and say, oh, the Colts are.
so much better because they have Nick Westbrookitaine or they have a team Davis Gather,
but having players who just know what they're doing and it can be provide,
it can provide stable depth for your team that know the system and know what they're asked of
in the NFL, I think is a valuable commodity to have it.
It's better than having practice squad guys or undrafted free agents filling roles.
So going out and getting players like this to fill out the bottom of your roster,
I think makes a ton of sense for this Colts team.
And one more big thing about these two players, again, we'll see what their contracts
look like, so it could be a moot point, but both players were released this offseason, right?
So neither player was a scheduled unrestricted free agent, which means they don't count whatsoever
towards that comp pick formula. So if you watched yesterday's episode that I put out where I talked
about how the Colts are kind of stagnating a little bit in free agency because they are playing
the comp game, they want to protect that fourth round comp pick and that six round comp pick that
they're projected to get next year. Well, this is part of that equation, right? You can sign players of
this caliber that were released and they don't apply to the comp pick game whatsoever.
So getting players in, again, they know what they're doing, provide stable depth,
and they don't take away your fourth or six round pick next year.
That is exactly how you should operate in the situation if you're the Colts.
So I like these moves.
I like these moves.
I'm not going to parade and say like, all right, now we're going to the Super Bowl because
we got Nick Westbrook Aquine and Akim Davis Gaiter in here.
But I do think that these moves make the Colts better.
I think they are perfectly fine.
bottom of the roster players that can make a 53 and do some good things for your team.
And I'm not going to complain about that whatsoever.
So Akeem Davis Gaiter and Nick Westbrookine, we will see what they can bring to this Colts team.
I expect Westbrookickeen Akeen to be more of a special team or this next season.
And Akeem Davis Gather will be your plug-in linebacker until the draft probably.
They'll probably draft two guys and have them compete in camp.
But Akeem Davis-Gather, I think, is still a much higher, like it just raises the
floor much higher than an Austin, a GK or a Jalen Carlis. So I do at least like the linebacker room
looks a little bit better as of right now because anytime I've looked at linebacker room
in the last couple of days, it has just been terrifying. So good work by the Colts. Again,
I know I'm going to get a lot of pessimistic comments saying that like these are just low level
signings, but low level signings can make up the bottom to your roster and can prevent you from
being, you know, the worst team in football if you have some injuries. So you need players like
this on your team and I'm excited to see what they can both bring in training camp.
But coming up, we're going to transition over to some of your guys' questions.
We're going to tackle free agency and we're going to tackle just team questions as well.
I'm going to try to go a little bit rapid fire through some of them so I can get through
a good chunk of your questions, but you guys send a lot.
So we'll dive into that here starting in segment two.
But first, college basketball is nonstop.
Big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night from early tip off to late night,
West Coast shootouts.
There's always action on the board.
And now Fandu is giving you a way to turn that energy into an even bigger potential wins

It is always a fun conversation every single day.
but you guys sent in dozens and dozens of questions on Twitter and in that everydayer club.
So let's start just dissecting some of these and seeing what we got.
First up, do you think Chris Bowd would actually trade for an edge rusher like Jonathan
Grenard or is it just going to end up as like fan talk?
You know, at the end of the day, a lot of these like trade discussions do end up just
being like fan speculation because it is hard to materialize a trade in the NFL.
You have to have two willing parties or I guess technically three willing parties.
because you have to have both teams willing to deal here.
Plus, you have to have that player willing to go to the new location,
which is always part of it.
Then there's always the money aspect of it and a lot of these other things.
I think the Colts are very willing to go into the trade market for an edge rusher.
They understand the importance of this upcoming season.
And as I mentioned on yesterday's episode talking about comp picks,
the Colts could be more interested in using some picks from 2027 because they have that extra
a fourth round pick potentially coming.
So they could be more willing to throw like a this year's third and a next year's fourth for
one of these edge rushers because they know they're getting that extra supplementary pick
in the comp in the comp formula for 2027.
So I think the Colts are very willing.
I think some of these edge rushers on the market are very willing to be moved.
It just comes down to when those teams or if those teams are willing to depart with
these players for the offered package that teams are making.
because at the end of the day,
if you're like the Minnesota Vikings,
if you're the New York Giants,
if you're the Arizona Cardinals,
you have to really look at it and say,
are we getting better by moving this player
for a third round pick and a fourth round pick, right?
Are we getting better for this upcoming season
by being minus Jonathan Grenard,
by being minus Josh Sweat,
that is the real question that these teams are asking themselves.
And it does take a while to get to that full resolution
and it could carry into the draft
and it could not happen whatsoever.
So I think the Colts are making those calls.
If it'll get finalized is what we'll have to see.
But I think if those teams are willing to depart with those players,
the Colts will be one of those teams in the market,
considering how hard they won after Trey Hendrickson earlier this all season as well.
So yeah, we'll see.
I'm not going to make any bold statements here,
but I do think that they're going to be part of that conversation for those edge rushers.
Next question we have here,
if the trade price is the exact same for both Jonathan,
Grinard and Josh Swet, which one would you rather see the Colts trade for? And I think this is a really
interesting one because over probably like the last year or two, I think Josh Twet has probably
been the better player. Grinard probably has the better resume. I think he's going to be a little
bit cheaper too to acquire in terms of the contract is going to be a bit cheaper to acquire,
which might actually push his trade price up a little bit higher than Josh Swet. But yeah,
I think Bernard is probably a better fit for the system as an overall player, just a rabid run
defender that can drop in coverage that's used to playing in this hybrid style of defense.
But Josh Sweat's probably a better overall pass rusher that can win quicker, who's a little
bit more explosive, especially Grinard coming off that shoulder injury from last year as well.
So it really is like a pick your flavor type of thing here.
I think if they were the exact same price, I'd probably take sweat, maybe.
Sweat's a little bit more powerful, a little bit more explosive at this point.
So maybe sweat is who I would lean here.
here, but either one, I think, would be a massive upgrade for the Colts.
I think they would pair exceptionally well with Laotu Latsu on the other side.
And I think it would help the Colts be a better team in 2026.
So either one of those players, I think would be great, but maybe slightly in Josh
sweat because I think just last year's film was a little bit better.
Next question here, Jonathan Granard or Kvon Tibido, which one would you rather trade for Indy
and why?
I think in this one, I would lean Jonathan Grenard.
Now, again, if the price was different, like for Tibido, if you were just had to give up like a day three pick and some change versus Grenard, you had to give up a third round pick and some change.
Maybe that changes the equation a little bit because I think they're both fine players, both solid players.
But Granard, I think, is the more proven and effective player at this point in their careers.
Tibdo is a little bit younger.
So maybe that could sway some things.
But Granard has just done it at a higher level in the NFL.
I mean, prior to this past season, he's been hitting 10 plus six.
sacks pretty consistently.
So I would prefer Jonathan Grenard in that scenario, but again, either one would be an
upgrade for the Colts.
I wouldn't really complain if they landed Tibido whatsoever.
I think he's a good player.
Next one here, moving away from the trade market, because there's been a lot of trade
market discussion.
Do you see the Colts making any significant signings happening before the draft?
Do you think they'll wait to spend that cap money until they see what it looks like
post-draft?
and that's from our insider program.
And this kind of goes with my conversation I was having yesterday with the compic formula
where all unrestricted free agents can be signed without affecting the compic formula on
the first Monday after the draft.
So after that deadline passes, you can start signing players free of charge basically in terms
of free of charge against the comp pick formula.
So if you're the Colts like, yeah, if a Trey Hendrickson were still out there,
you're fine losing a fourth round pick to get Trey Hendrickson, right?
And that's why they were so aggressive going after him.
but these other players that are out there like
Janavian Clowny, AJ Epinessa,
Joey Bosa, they can be upgrades for the Colts.
They can be better than what they currently have,
but are they worth losing that fourth round comp pick?
I think that's the question that the Colts and other teams are having right now.
And that's why we're seeing the market dry up for those players.
And those players understand that like,
hey, if I sign after the draft when teams are more desperate
because they've missed out on edge rush rushers in the draft
or because now they have more money to spend,
because they're not worried about the comp pick,
then I can get more on my average annual salary,
and we can go from there.
So I think it's kind of an agreement between both sides here
with what those parties involved.
And we could see the Colts if they're going to make more of a splash signing,
it happening when the comp pick equation is out.
Now, they could still sign a player who was recently released, right?
Like, there's nothing stopping them from signing a Bobby O'Caric
because he was cut by the Giants.
And you can sign him to a $30 million per year contract.
if you wanted, and it wouldn't touch your fourth round comp pick.
So there are still a couple players that can go out there and sign.
It's just some of them might have to come after the draft if you don't want to lose that
fourth round pick that they're currently projected to get for losing Quitty Pay to the Raiders
this offseason.
Next one here, what are the best free agents left at linebacker and Edge?
And that's from our everyday club as well.
At Edge Rush, again, a lot of veteran guys, a lot of up and down players.
I think Jadavian Clowny is probably the best overall one.
left. He had a really good season with the Dallas Cowboys last year. And I think he can be a
productive player still in this system as a power rusher. Joey Bosa was still like top 50 and a lot of
pressure statistics. So again, if you want to just get a good guy who can, you know, a certified bucket
winner is what I call a bucket getter, I guess is what you want to call him, who can just get sacks
and get pressures. Then Joey Bosa could still do that for you. If you want to go a little bit younger,
Guter Gross Modos or E. Vanessa makes some sense. If you want to
just take a flyer. Hassan Reddick is still out there. He's been out there every offseason,
it seems like. So at edge rusher, there are a couple guys at linebacker. One of the guys
I actually put down as a potential answer was signed by the Colts today. That's Akeem Davis
Gator, but also Bobby O'Carike and Jermaine Pratt could be options as well. But I think
getting a team, Akim Davis Gather in here does raise that floor, at least enough to where I'm not
terribly concerned about linebacker with it being such a good linebacker draft. So yeah, there's
options out there for the Colts. It's all about just that comp pick formula, though, I think is
the big part of it. And then actually our final one that we have here for this segment,
it seems like Ballard is playing the comp pick game. So now that they couldn't sign Jerry Hendrickson,
who are some guys that you could see them acquiring either via trade or free agency that wouldn't
affect it? And again, I think they're still making those calls about top end defensive ends,
like Renard, like Josh Sweat, because they have that extra ammunition in the future drafts.
So I still think they are making those calls.
And in terms of who you can sign, I gave a list on yesterday's show,
but also guys like Bobby Wagner, Bobby O'Caricay doesn't impact it.
Akeen Davis Gaither and Nick Westbrookina, who they just signed today,
don't affect the comp pick formula.
So there are plenty of ways that the Colts can get around the comp pick game
and still sign players to the roster.
It's just not going to be many of like the top names that you see out on the market as of right now.
But there are still ways to make those moves,
as we saw today with some of the.
the veterans they brought in.
So we will see the Colts continue to add until the draft.
But if they make another big ad in free agency,
it won't come until after that comp pick deadline the first Monday following the NFL
draft.
But coming up, guys, we're going to continue this Q&A session talking about some team
needs and some team questions that you guys had.
You guys have quite a few.
So we're going to dive into those in just a second.

All right, Locked on Colts Every Dayers,
we are back for a final time on today's show,
answering more of your Q&A questions that you had.
You guys asked all about free agency in the second segment,
and we also recap the signings of Akeem Davis Gather
and Nick Westbrook Akeeney to kick off today's show.
So now we're diving into just some roster maintenance
and some questions that you guys have about the current state of the roster.
Now, some of these might be a little outdated because of the two veteran signings, but honestly, I don't think many of them will be.
I don't think Westbrook-Kine or Davis-Gaith really changed too much of the equation here.
But let's dive through some of these right now.
What do you think the Colts do at QB2?
Will it be Riley Leonard or will it be a veteran?
There are some veterans available.
Like you go the Kirk Cousins route or like those type of tier of players that are out there.
But ultimately, I think the Colts want it to be Riley Leonard.
Leonard showed a little bit more late last season than I think the Colts even expected.
Shane Steichen's been a very big fan of him for a long time and was very excited to get him in this past draft.
Not that I'm saying that he thinks Riley Leonard's going to be a starter in this league,
but I think he does like Riley Leonard a good bit.
So yeah, I think Riley Leonard has the inside track, I guess, to be that backup quarterback next season.
And we'll see what he can do with that opportunity.
He should get a lot of the reps in training camp, which would be big for his development.
So Riley Leonard, I do think we'll get a big opportunity this summer and see what he can do to earn that backup quarterback job behind Daniel Jones.
Next question we have here, who are some draft picks over the last few years that are not going to be on the roster come September?
This person also called out Jalen Carlize and Blake Freeland.
I think those are two excellent callouts there.
I don't know if either of those players will make the team.
We could also say Jalen Jones, I think, in that equation.
Jalen Jones, who gave the Colts some pretty good play.
over the first two years of his rookie contract,
just not a good fit in this system,
got outplayed by Jonathan Edwards in Training Camp.
And in the season, it was kind of a push between those two players.
The Colts have acquired a lot of talent at Corner,
whether it's trading for Mackay Blackman,
trading for Sauce Gardner, signing Mooney Ward,
signing Cam Taylor Britt.
They've just added so much to that cornerback room
that I just don't know Jalen Jones is going to make the team,
whether it's a cut or a trade.
So Jalen Jones, I think, is certainly the top one you want to throw on there.
In terms of some other players, I mean, not really anybody crazy here, like Tim Smith,
who didn't make the team last year.
It could be another roster cut yet again because they just added so much to defensive tackle this offseason.
But I don't think we're going to see anything crazy, like a former top 50 player,
like a top 50 pick player, not making the team or anything.
Like, I expect Justin Wally and JT to him a little while to make the team out of training camp.
So, yeah, I think Jalen Jones is probably the biggest name that we're talking about there.
Next question, why not slide Josh Downs over to the wide receiver two slot?
Doesn't he have the speed?
He seems like an easier slide than using one of our current players as the immediate decoy.
That's a great question.
You know, Josh Downs is a very effective wide receiver, a very good wide receiver.
And you can protect him a little bit still from press man coverage and a lot of that stuff with having him play the Z position.
the Z wide receiver doesn't get press manned as much because they can line up off the line of scrimmage.
But when it comes to Josh Downs, like he does have the long speed, like the testing long speed.
But I don't know if he has the ability to really threaten on the outside like he does from the inside from the slot.
You know, I think he can play outside.
It's just his effectiveness wouldn't be what the Colts want or need.
And also I think a lot of these times, like, you know, asking him to go over the middle of field, like running full speed on a slant is a lot different.
than running an option route against a linebacker that's playing inside leverage, you know.
So it is a very different role, very different ask.
I'm sure they will get some snaps with him out there just to just to use him in that way and keep his snaps up a little bit.
But overall, I think you still need like again, when you go to like 11 personnel and you have your best three receivers on the field,
you're going to have downs in the slot.
You're not going to put downs outside and put somebody else in the slot because downs is at his best with his short area quickness in the slot.
So I think they'll find ways to use him a little bit more this next season, get his snaps up overall.
But they still need another player.
I think that can be a good run blocker on the outside, a good guy who has the size to go over the middle and win those tough contestant catches, like in Nick Westbrook, Keene, at a very low level.
Or in the draft, like a Dijon stribling type of player.
So I think they'll find other guys for that role.
But downs will certainly get his snaps next season.
They'll find a way to make it work with him.
So great question.
We'll see exactly what it looks like in training camp,
but I don't think Josh Downs will be like the every down outside wide receipt.
He'll get some out there, but it just won't be a ton because it's just such a different ask from what he's been asked to do throughout his NFL career thus far.
Next question here with the Cam Taylor Britt signing is Jalen Jones a lock to be traded.
That's from the everydayer club.
I wouldn't say a lot to be traded because you need two to tango with that.
And we'll see if there's another team that's willing to take him.
him on. The Colts would save $3.6 million, but also another team would owe over $3 million to
a young corner that basically lost his role last season. So I don't know if he really holds much
trade value at this point, but in terms of is Jalen Jones a lot to not be on the team come
September, I think that's more likely than like a trade at this point. We'll see if he's able to
show out in camp, if he's still on the roster by then and earn a spot. But it's not looking great for
his future with the Colts. And, you know, he's still only 23, 24 years old.
Still a young player that has a long career ahead of him. So we'll ultimately see what happens
with him this off season. Another one about Cam Taylor Britt, though, could Kenny Moore be traded
for draft capital or be a cap casualty? I think when you're a team like the Colts who are
trying to win as many games as possible next season, like they're not tanking. They're not trying
to hit rock bottom. I think you just want to keep your good players unless it really came down to it.
And I think Kenny Moore, even with his declining play last season,
you would much rather have him on your roster than not have him.
So unless someone's offering you something crazy for him,
which I highly doubt that's what you're getting,
I think Kenny Moore should still be on the team come next season.
It really depends on what he looks like in training camp, though.
If he just looks dreadful and you feel better about Justin Wally in that spot,
then sure, you can make that trade.
But as of right now, I'd still rather have a good player,
a good, a versatile player that can defend the run.
like he does, who can play zone coverage like he does.
I'd rather still have that on my team than not have that.
So I'm sure it's part of the equation, but Cam Taylor Britt,
unless his contract was like a one year, like $10 million contract,
which is saying that he's going to start,
I don't think that anything about Cam Taylor Britt signing says that Kenny Moore
is going to be on the way out.
I think Taylor Britt was signed more to be a depth player.
So I don't think that like anything about that contract has anything to signify
with Kenny Moore.
I think, again, it threatens more of Jalen Jones than it threatens Kenny Moore going forward with this team.
And then one more, let's hit one more question here.
Since we're talking so much about Corner, let's talk about Justin Wally here.
So Justin Wally, should we accept big snaps from him this next season?
I hope he's not getting big snaps this next season, not because I don't like Justin Wally,
but just because they have Soss Gardner, they have Mooney Ward, and they have Kenny Moore.
Like, those are three pretty good players, I'll be it a little bit older players,
especially with Mooney and Kenny.
But ideally, those guys are never hurt and they're able to play a full season.
And we don't have to talk about a backup player, you know, getting on the field.
But ideally, Justin Wally still is going to have a role.
The Colts like to go to a lot of four cornerback sets on third down and fourth down.
So there's still a potential role for Wally to get out there a little bit.
But knowing the state of how corners get hurt in Nindi, knowing how injuries just happened in general,
I think we will see a good bit of Justin Wally this season because
that's just how the NFL works.
So even if he is just like the third outside corner and the second slot corner going into the season,
we'll still see a good bit of Justin Wally this year just because there's no chance that
the Colts are going to go through the whole year with all three of those corners playing in all 17 games.
There will be injuries and a player like Justin Wally will be the next guy up.
So I don't think he's going to get serious snaps unless there's a serious injury in training camp,
but we will see a good bit of Justin Wally this season.
And I'm very excited to see what the young player can do.
I like this film.
I think he's got a good head on his shoulders,
and I think he can be a good NFL player.
So that is all I have for today.
