Hello everybody, welcome back to this week's episode of Locked On Colts, part of the Locked On Podcast Network.
Today's always your host, Evan Sattery, joined by Stephen Reed of Stampede Blue.
Here on this Friday night to recap a crazy day in the NFL, as well as we're back for live mock draft 3.0.
We're now about a month away from the NFL draft stand. It's one of the best times of the year.
Kind of in the doldrums of free agency right now. The Colts aren't done yet, according to Stephen Holder.
They're still talking guys like Justin Houston and other veteran edge rushers,
but it's probably not going to be happening anytime soon.
But let's talk about the big trade that happened in the NFL,
a three-way trade, a rarity that we see nowadays in the NFL.
The Dolphins moved back from originally 3-12.
The San Francisco 49ers, you jumped all the way up from 12-3
to get into the quarterback arms race behind.
And you have to imagine this point from all indications that Dane Brewer
mentioned this as well as Daniel Jeremiah, that after today's pro day,
Zach Wilson of BYU is a lock to go to, to the jets.
So either Trey Lance, Justin Fields,
maybe even Mac Jones could be the quarterback for the 49ers at three.
They move up and give three three first-round picks in the process, Stephen.
They give up 12 overall, a 2022 first, a 2023 first,
and a third-round pick in the 2022 draft.
That is a significant haul, Stephen.
We'll talk about the second part of the trading room just a moment.
Just from the 49ers' perspective, which really ties into the Colts
because you have to imagine this played into their hand a little bit
about them thinking about moving up to the draft this year
because if the 49ers had to give three first-round picks and a future third,
that's an extra nine spots ahead of the Colts.
At that point, Steve, I tweeted this out today on my account.
You have to imagine that from 21 to get into that top three,
which we originally thought a couple months ago,
if the Colts really want to be bold and make a huge move in this year's draft,
they can go up from 21 to three and just give up their whole future.
But I thought it'd only be three first-round picks to do that.
It seems like if the 49ers get three first-round picks, Stephen,
the Colts might have to get four first-round picks to move up that high.
Like that would have been an insane amount,
and maybe that kind of goes into why they pivoted to Carson Wentz.
Yeah, and I think you're spot on with that, Evan.
The value, and this is something that I'm sure Chris Ballard,
Frank Reich weighed in terms of trying to look at the trade market to trade up
for a quarterback into that top five. Because, you know,
what we've talked about before, that's where they had to be.
You're looking at probably three first round picks because I think you can only trade two years out.
For whatever reason, that number is stuck in my head.
But you're looking at, like, three first-round picks at least
plus probably two second-round picks plus probably a player.
Like, you're looking at, like like seven guys that you'd be give six,
seven guys that you'd be giving up that are, you know, top 60 guys,
top 60 picks. That's just not Chris Ballard.
And so that I think is something that definitely weighed in on it.
It's something that Frank Wright can mention.
I think it was an Albert Albert Breer's piece for SI,
Monday Morning Quarterback. With him, he had a conversation
with Frank Wright, and they talked about it, about how
they had the opportunity. They were looking at the options to trade up in the draft to go get a
quarterback, and then this Carson Wentz situation fell into the lap.
You don't blame them for for
taking a chance um Dan Orlovsky said um in an interview with Colts.com you know you look at
you know Carson Wentz and you say all right do you think you're getting the 2017 to 2019 Carson
Wentz or you're getting this 2020 and Dan Orlovsky was like well I'm gonna you know bet that I'm
gonna get the 2017 to 2019
Carson Wentz because that's the years that he had some decent talent around him and then 2020 is the
outlier and so the Colts looking at that and looking at how much it was going to take it was
realistically going to take for them to trade up into the top four top five that's just not
something Chris Ballard would probably be
willing to do, given how he builds his roster, how much he values his draft picks.
I think the Carson Wentz trade, it makes even more sense now after seeing what the 49ers
gave up just to get to number three overall.
Like, you're taking the third quarterback, and you had to give up three first-round picks
and a third-round pick, that's great for Miami.
And I just think it's, it's just crazy to give up that much draft capital.
But if you've got to go get your guy, then,
then that's what you do if you're sure on him and Kyle Shanahan better be sure
that, that this guy's is going to be a hit.
And so, yeah, I think for the Colts it was a smart move to stay out of that kind of bidding war because it was going to cost twice as much for the Colts to move up from 21
as it was for the 49ers to move up from 12.
Yeah, it really seems at this point, Steve, we're going to be seeing four quarterbacks go to the top four. And I can't remember the last time it's happened. It might be the first time in modern NFL Steve we're going to be seeing full quarterbacks going to top four and I can't remember the last time it's happened might be the first time in modern NFL
era we're going to see that happen because I know the Falcons restructured Matt Ryan's contract they
could take a quarterback or if they want to trade back which after seeing the price that the Dolphins
just got for number three I have to imagine the Falcons are really really enticed now to move
back a little bit and get some future picks in this process whether it be with New England or
even someone like Carolina or Denver who moves up to number four overall
for whoever is there of like a Trey Lance or Justin Fields it seems like at this point it's
gonna be Lawrence Wilson then Fields and Lance at three or four in whichever order possible so the
Colts would have to move up at least from 21 into the top four to secure one of those quarterbacks
so just a really unrealistic spot maybe like just mentioned, the reason why they really felt comfortable
going in on Carson Wentz after seeing what it would have cost them.
But the second part of that trade for a dive into our live mob draft 3.0,
Stephen, today, involved the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nick Sirianni, the Colts' offensive coordinator,
is now the Philadelphia Eagles' head coach.
Tough situation there, obviously, this year for the Eagles,
really rebuilding a lot this year.
Carson Wentz leaves town.
Zach Ertz on the way out as well. But we also know that they're going to bet on J.M. Ertz for this year for the Eagles really rebuilding a lot this year Carson Wentz leaves town Zach Ertz on the way out as well but we also know that they're going to bet on Jalen Hurts for
this year and it seems like with moving back from 6 to 12 it really does seem like they're going to
try to build some future pieces around Jalen Hurts and it now will have three first round
picks in the 2022 draft assuming Carson Wentz plays 75% of the snaps so if Hurts bombs out in
2021 they're really set
up well Steven to trade up in next year's draft to get the quarterback they want or add some more
pieces around Hurts if he does work out but the Eagles and Dolphins swapped fifth round picks
the Dolphins jumped back from three to twelve and moved back up with the Eagles to six
swapping fifth round picks and they gave up a 2022 first round pick they just acquired
to get up with the Eagles
for number six overall so I imagine puts them in place to get a top wide receiver for two at
title by low what was your thoughts on that I know it's interesting because there's there's
some rumors about Philadelphia trying to get up to number three but they with the Dolphins
moving from six to three and but they were only going to do it if
they they could take zach wilson um and so you got to think that when san francisco made the trade up
from 12 to 3 they probably also made the same offer to the jets trying to get them to make it
but jets obviously weren't moving off of it so it sounds like it sounds like the jets are locked in
at zach wilson at number two.
It's interesting that Philadelphia tried to get up to number three for Zach Wilson,
finding out that he probably wasn't going to be available at three.
They went ahead and said, all right, well, we'll go ahead and trade back, pick up some extra picks.
I think it's really smart for Philadelphia to do that because they have a lot of holes on their roster.
And I don't think they're all in on Jalen Hurts.
I think they're going to do a wait and see.
They're going to play him this year, see what he does.
And if he bombs out, like you said, they're going to have at least two,
if not three, first-round picks next year to be able to go up and get their guy without having to mortgage their future picks.
And so I think for them it makes a lot of sense to do this little trade back. I think it was
just a really savvy move by the Dolphins. This is like the draft day movie scenario kind of trade
where you drop back with one team and then you trade back up with another. And somehow the
Dolphins went from three to six and ended up picking up an extra
first round and an extra third round pick in that process and then doing a pick swap of fifth round
picks so it's just crazy that the Dolphins were able to drop from three to six which as Colts fans
we know being the team that dropped from three to six three years ago, Chris Fowler was able to get three second-round picks,
which for him is great because it's three really quality picks.
For the Dolphins to do that and still pick up an extra first-round pick
and a third-round pick, that was pretty savvy maneuvering there by the Dolphins.
So I think it's a good move for the Dolphins to move back up
because it's going to put them in a position to get the guy
that's not the quarterback.
Because there's been rumors that Mac Jones might be the guy at number three
that San Francisco is starting, which for me I think is kind of crazy.
I feel like San Francisco could have gotten Mac Jones at 12.
But there's rumors from pretty reputable guys saying that Kyle Shanahan is pretty smitten
with Mac Jones. So I'll be interested to see how it all shakes out. But you're looking at
at least four quarterbacks going in the first four picks, four or five picks. You could be having
as many as five quarterbacks going in the top 10, which is kind of crazy to me.
So the Dolphins are going to have their pick there at number six overall to get either Laker
Penny Sewell or Jamar Chase, Devonta Smith, you know, going in pair Jalen Waddell, pairing them
Devonta Smith or Jalen Waddell back up with Tua. I think that makes a whole lot of sense for them.
So you're good for Miami. They're really maneuvering the draft
very well, especially for the next three years. I think they've got multiple
first-round picks for each of the next three years, multiple second-round picks.
And then in one or two of the years, they've got multiple third-round picks.
They've got Chris Ballard's dream of draft pick capital.
I think they've done just a phenomenal
job moving around I think this is a great trade for Philadelphia too if they weren't just set on
one guy being able to pick up an extra first round pick next year it's going to give them more capital
if Jalen Hurts flames out and that's what they'll need and they'll need that that those extra picks
if they want to move up. Bet online is fastest and easiest way to bet on all your sports action.

Yeah, and I mean,
going down the draft day wormhole for a second,
Steve, before we dive into our live mock draft,
I mean, honestly,
if someone is smitten by Mack Jones,
it would be Carolina at eight or New England at 15.
Like, Miami can move back again if they want
and recoup the picks they just moved up for.
I mean, it could just get a little crazy there,
but I would not be shocked
at the way the Dolphins are maneuvering so far
a month ahead of the draft.
But let's dive in now, Stephen, into our live mock draft 3.0. I think for this one,
it's going to be interesting. We're going to use the PFN mock draft simulator, which is free and
allows you to trade if you want to. But with the pro day so far, there's a lot of interesting stuff
happening with the Colts. We told you guys last week about Sam Cosme with Texas. They were at his
pro day and Frank Reich when they had that Carson Wentz video,
they were showing Cosme tape on the screen, which I'm shocked still.
The Colts did not blur that out.
But they've been at pro days for Northwestern featuring Rashawn Slater
and Greg Newsome, Virginia Tech featuring Christian Derusaw
and Caleb Farrie, and as well as Alabama, the top heavy hitter ones,
featuring Alex Leatherwood and Patrick Sertain.
So maybe something to watch for, like a surprise pick of a cornerback in this draft.
Like if Caleb Farley does slip to 21, which he easily could now due to a back injury,
a former consensus top 10, top 12 pick.
Maybe Ballard goes BPA and says, hey, Xavier Rhodes is on a one-year deal.
If Farley is there, we'll just go for it and just see what happens.
But let's dive in now, Steven, the live mock draft 3.0.
I went in and pressed start on the simulator here.
And it's going to be interesting what happens after today's trade with the
Dolphins, Eagles, and the 49ers.
But we have two offers on the board here, Stephen.
Let's go over who's on the board, though, first.
Let me see here.
I'm going to go ahead and check these out.
As far as the big board right now, Stephen,
we have a couple guys here with
Colts Connections. We have Aziz Ojulari of Georgia, Quiddy Pay of Michigan as far as edge
rushers go. Those guys top the list as well as Jalen Phillips of Miami is on there as well.
You can go to cornerback. Greg Newsom is there. Hopping over to offense though, offense tackle,
Sam Cosme of Texas is there, the best offense tackle on the board right now.
Jalen Mayfield of Michigan, Alex Leatherwood of Alabama,
Tevin Jenkins of Oklahoma State, and Liam Eikenberg of Notre Dame
are on the board.
And looking at wide receiver, Kadarius Toney,
Terrace Marshall are there as well.
Any of those guys stand out to you before we dive into the trade offers?
You know, I'll be interested.
Putty Pay put up some really good numbers, which is not
necessarily surprising at his workout. Sam Cosme is a guy that, as you mentioned, could be a real
sleeper pick for the Colts there at 21. He's an athletic freak. If you look at relative athletic
score, we know that Chris Ballard takes that into consideration or he tends to take guys that score very well on that. Sam Cosby was the number one overall
in all of offensive tackles for the relative athletic score out of what 1200 offensive
tackles since 1987. He's got the top score. He had a perfect 10. And that's just unheard of. So
that's something to keep an eye on. Not just for the fact that they let it slip in that,
that Carson Wentz welcome video. That's a guy that I think could be an option there. Again,
I always liked Terrace Marshall Jr. I don't know if, I think 21's a little high for him. Greg Newsome
is another guy, as we mentioned. Chris Ballard was at, I think it was Chris Ballard who was at
Northwestern's Pro Day. And so you've got, you know, he's, remember, he went to Clinton Nelson's
Pro Day too. So I don't know whether there's any connections to make there,
but he did go for that for that one. But yeah, I'm interested to hear what the trade offers are.
I'm sure we've got some from from different teams. So let's hear what we got. Yeah, two
trade offers on the board for us here, Steven, and they're both pretty intriguing to me. One's
a little more simple. So we'll start off with that one. The Baltimore Ravens want to move up a little bit, maybe for
a weapon since they missed out on T.Y. Hilton. That could be like Hedarius Tony or Terrace Marshall,
but they offer pick 27, and they get their fourth round pick at 104, an early fourth round pick,
to the Colts for pick 21. So they move back six spots, could still be in range for a guy like
Cosme who's still there, or an Alex Leatherwood if they want to go off his tackle or even a Greg Newsome but the other one on the boards from the New York
Giants who are countering with pick 42 so the Colts move back 21 spots and they also get pick
42 pick 76 and a 2022 Giants second round pick which could be like a I'd say maybe at most like
a top 50 pick next year if they do well I don't think the Giants are going to be that great next year.
But the Colts in this scenario are giving up 21-248,
their final pick in the seventh round, for 42-76 in 2022 Giants second.
And just to recap for you real quick again, Stephen,
from Baltimore, 27-104 for 21.
I tend to want to drop a little bit further.
The Baltimore one is intriguing.
I don't like just getting back a fourth-round pick to drop back six spots.
I feel like they should be at least a third to be in that.
I'd rather just drop back to 42,
pick up that extra third-round pick, and grab the future second-round pick because that also helps offset the loss of that second-round pick next year
with the Carson Wentz trade.
Yeah, and it really just goes to show you, I mean, I agree with you.
If there was a trade on the board here, I would do it from the Colts' perspective.
It would be New York.
You drop back 20 picks.
You get a third-round pick. You get a second-round pick next, I would do from the Colts perspective, it would be New York. You drop back 20 picks, you get a third round pick,
you get a second round pick next year,
really offsetting the Carson Wentz trade like you just mentioned, Stephen.
It really just depends here if the Colts are just enamored and in love by a guy
like Sam Cosme. He's not going to be there. He's not going to be there at 42.
So it's really deciding on if you're really sold on this guy,
you're not going to have him if you trade back.
So it's really up to us, Stephen and and Bauer and Reich's shoes right now,
and Ed Dodd's.
If they're narrowed by Sam Cosme, they probably don't want to do this deal.
But if they are, maybe they can sneak back and still get Alex Leatherwood
20 picks later, who, by the way, Bauer and Frank Reich were at Alabama's
pro day as well.
Alex Leatherwood really put on a show there as well.
So maybe they could slide back, get future capital,
and still get Alex Leatherwood.
Yeah, and that's the thing is is you want to with the depth of this tackle class
there's a lot of different options for the colts to possibly drop back and still get somebody that
can start right away um you have alex leatherwood like you mentioned liam eikenberg dylan radunes
is somebody we talked about dionte smith um br, Braden Christensen out of BYU is another one that you feel really, I mean, Walker Little.
You've got a lot of guys in round two, round three, and that day two range that you could put in there at left tackle and feel very comfortable with when they're playing next to Quentin Nelson.
I mean, quite honestly, you could probably put somebody like me in there and you'd feel pretty comfortable with playing
next to Quentin Nelson, but you've got all these guys here on day two, quality, quality players.
I think if this class was not as deep at left tackle, then that would change the perception
and you'd probably feel safer taking the Baltimore pick to get that extra
fourth round pick and then making sure you're still in range to get your guy.
But given the depth of,
of the left tackle position and without having any just star star guy right
there, staring you in the face that you just say, all right,
I can't pass this guy up. I'd rather take that, that Giants trade, kind of recoup some of that draft capital that I lost
in the Carson Wentz deal, and then see what we get there at 42. Let's lock it in, Stephen. The Colts
move back 21 spots. They go from 21 to 42, and they also get their seventh round pick, 248 in
this deal. They get back the Giants' second round pick, their third round pick,8 in this deal they get back the Giants second round pick their third round pick
and a second round pick in next year's draft so we're back on the board here 42 Steve we do have
one trade offer before we get to that though there's a lot of still good names on the board
here I don't know if they're going to be there if they Colts do move back again Alex Leatherwood
is still on the board for them he's the best remaining left tackle Tevin Jenkins is still
there as well looking as well at tight end you have Brevin Jordan there at 42.
Wide receiver, you have Terrace Marshall there, Rondo Moore, Elijah Moore.
Defense, you can go over to edge for a second.
Really all the edge guys, at least the elite edge guys,
in that 20 to 40 range are off the board.
So maybe pass rusher is not the way to go here for their first pick.
But then you go to cornerback, guys like Greg Newsome are off the board now. The top guy now is Eric Stokes out of Georgia. So you're kind of staring at the face
here, Steven, of I think it'd be left tackled here if you stay at 42. And the best guys remaining
are Tevin Jenkins, Alex Leatherwood, Liam Eikenberg, and Dylan Radunes. We do have one trade
offer on the board, though, from Pittsburgh. So you move back from 42, and you get back 55 and 87.
So that means Colts that have
back-to-back picks at 54 and 55 while also having a pick I believe at 72 and 87 so you'd have I
believe in that scenario you would have three picks or four picks within a 30 pick span within
the late second early third round I believe it's three picks in a 30-pick span, but it's really up to us at this point,
Steven. I mean, again, I'll repeat that, 42 for 55 and 87 for Pittsburgh, but the guy, like,
they're probably moving up at this point for a guy like Alex Leatherwood. That's probably what
Pittsburgh's trying to do in this scenario, because they haven't taken a left tackle here,
and they really need one with Alejandro Villanueva going. I do wonder at this point if the Colts,
since they had Ballard and Reich at Alabama's pro day,
if they're enamored by Alex Leatherwood, if they trade
back, recoup the Carson Wentz trade, they can still
feel comfortable about Leatherwood at 42.
If they move back from here,
they're not going to have Leatherwood on the board at 55.
What would you do in this scenario, Steve?
I'm kind of leaning towards staying here, just based off
of, I know it's a really enticing
trade, but after this, the left
tackle, if they really are
a neighbor by guy like Alex Leatherwood, having Ryken Bauer at their pro day, this could be their
guy. Yeah, it's interesting because Leatherwood is a guy that played left tackle. And I think
if he would have come out last year, people had mixed bag feelings on him. And he played this year
and everybody's still
kind of like well is he a right tackle is he a left tackle we're not real sure um he really does
he he's interesting um in terms of a prospect uh i if this is their guy and with both ballard and
right going to alabama um it makes you wonder which guys they were looking at.
Because obviously you've got the two wide receivers,
Novata Smith and Jalen Waddell.
You've got the corner with Patrick Sertain.
You've got Dylan Moses, the linebacker.
You've got a couple of different offensive linemen there,
Alex Weatherwood, Dion Brown.
You've got a lot of different guys there at Alabama that you
could be looking at. But you got to think that at this point, I feel probably more comfortable
going with Alex Weatherwood than some of the other options. And plus, it's a new variation
for our draft. I mean, I'll tell you, my gut reaction is like, oh, good, Terrace Marshall,
Jr. and Greg Newsom's on the board.
No, Eric Stokes is the guy that's on the board, not Greg Newsom.
They'd say, oh, Terrace Marshall Jr. is on the board.
That seems like a solid pick, but we've done that before.
I think that if the Colts are really looking at that left tackle position, and we know they are,
I think their first pick is going to be a left tackle.
So I feel fine locking in Alex Leatherwood here and foregoing that Pittsburgh trade because you're right.
If you drop from 42 to 54, Leatherwood is not there.
So you're picking, you're hoping at that point that Liam Eikenberg,
Dylan Radunes, somebody like that is still there at 54.
And there's no guarantee those guys are going to be there either with the picks between 42 and 54.
So I feel confident.
Let's go ahead and lock in Alex Leatherwood there as the left tackle prospect.

Let's go ahead and do it, Stephen.
I'm in agreement with you there.
And he put up insane numbers at his pro day, Stephen.
I don't even have the chance to look at it yet.
But a 34.5-inch vertical jump, which is 97th percentile for all offensive line.
He's a big dude.
Offensive tackles, yeah.
He's 315-plus pounds at 6'5", a 9'10 broad jump,
an insane broad jump for an offensive lineman.
That's 99th percentile according to Mock Draftable.
So that really does kind of show like an elite athlete.
I think his RAS score, according to Kent from Math Bomb on Twitter,
was a 9.7, I believe, out of 10.
I think he finished in the top 60.
That's pretty good.
Yeah, so he checks the athlete box for them as well.
Team captain, he's a blue star prospect.
Kind of fits the character measurables as well.
So let's lock in Alex Leatherwood as the day one plug-and-play left tackle.
They moved back.
They really recouped all the picks they gave up in Carson Wentz trade pretty much
and get the left tackle of the future at 42 with Alex Leatherwood out of Alabama.
So we're back on the clock here, Stephen, at pick 54.
The Rams are on the clock with us as far as calling us for a trade at 54.
They're offering us – I don't know about this one, Steve.
I might just stay put here because I don't know if I like it this much
for what they're offering.
It is pick 54 plus pick 127, colts fourth round pick the rams had
sent us 57 and a third round pick in next year's draft so you're kind of relinquishing a pick here
and probably i imagine getting back a late third round pick in next year's draft i don't know if
i really like this one no i don't i don't like that one especially it's not like if i was just
dropping back from 54 to 57 and I recouped the future third,
then I would take that.
But having to give up a fourth-round pick this year to make that trade,
that's a no-go for me.
That's too much draft capital.
I would say no to that one.
Yeah, let's decline that trade.
So let's look at the board now, Stephen.
We have a couple of intriguing names on the board here at 54.
We just took Alex Leatherwood to be our plug-and-play starter, left tackle.
But now we're looking at pass rusher, wide receiver, tight end.
I imagine even corner since, I mean, the Colts have been in a lot of produce
so far for corners in this draft.
We can look at that as well.
But let's go to pass rusher real quick.
Obviously, it's a top need.
I imagine at this point, Stephen, they're going to sign a veteran,
whether it be like a Justin Houston or a Ryan Kerrigan
or even someone along those lines who could be a rotational pass rusher
this year with Kamoko Ture and Ben Banigou.
But the pass rushers on the board right now, I kind of like them,
but I feel like I could still get one later on in this draft.
Remember, we recruit the third-round pick from the New York Giants in the 70s.
We're going to be picking, again, 20 spots.
But Rashad Weaver and Patrick Jones out of Pittsburgh, top of the list.
Quincy Roach out of Miami.
Peyton Turner out of Houston is four or five slots down for the edge rushers here.
Those guys top of the list to edge rusher.
Going over the tight end, Brevin Jordan staring us in the face here, Stephen.
He's by far the best tight end on the board here.
After this is a steep drop-off in tight ends from where they could be.
Frank Reich's mentioned over and over again they need to add a vertical throw at tight end on the board here after this is a steep drop off in tight ends from where they could be. Frank Reich's mentioned over and over again
they need to add a vertical throw tight end.
Me and you both have been on the record here on the show as being
huge Brevin Jordan fans, but wide
receiver here, if T.Y. Hill is just a one
year guy and he goes to the market next
year and leaves, wide outs
could be a huge need. Zach Paschal as well as
B.F. Frazier next year. Elijah Moore out
of Ole Miss is on the board. Rondale
Moore out of Purdue. Amon Ross board. Rondale Moore out of Purdue.
Amon Ross, St. Brown out of USC.
Those guys top the list there.
If we're staying here, Stephen, I think in my opinion,
I'm leaning towards Brevin Jordan out of Miami.
I'm going to be very curious to see if the Colts are at Miami's Pro Day on Monday because they have Brevin Jordan there.
They have Gregory Rousseau, Jalen Phillips.
I wonder who from the Colts for office will be there for that one
because it's going to be a lot of heavy hitters there.
But for pick 54 in this scenario, after all the mentions of tight end,
they need to add at least one vertical weapon to this offense
for Carson Wentz at the re-sign T.Y. Hilton.
I think Brevin Jordan in this offense really thrives, Stephen,
but where do you lean as far as the names there?
Yeah, I'm with you on that one, Evan.
Brevin Jordan is the one that really kind of sticks out for me.
He's a guy that's really moldable in terms of he's got that ability
to still be a blocker if you want him to,
but he's definitely got that vertical threat as a receiver at tight end.
And it's something that they've talked about at nausea.
Every single chance they
get, they talk about they want to add another vertical threat at tight end. They want to
add a couple picks here, a couple picks there. And so they're really looking forward to that.
So Brevin Jordan makes a lot of sense here. I'm not in love with any of the wide receivers available. The corners are right here.
The edge rushers, I feel like, you know, maybe we might get lucky and get somebody like a Peyton
Turner at 76. So I would feel really comfortable with Brevin Jordan at tight end. I've said this
before, my thoughts on the Colts first three picks, no matter how they go,
I feel like they're going to go left tackle, edge rusher, and a pass catcher.
Whether that be wide receiver or tight end, I'm not sure.
But I feel very comfortable in those three categories.
They're going to take those three positions early in the draft.
And that's kind of where we're going at here.
I think Brevin Jordan makes a lot of sense here at 54.
Let's lock in Brevin Jordan, Stephen.
Tighten out on Miami.
I think he's, him and Frank Reich's offense,
I think he's going to put up monster numbers
even very early on in his career if this were to happen.
He's a blue star prospect as well.
Team captain for Miami.
Very freaky athlete.
We're going to see his pro day on Monday here.
I wonder what numbers he'll put up in that one.
But let's go on to pick 76 here, Stephen.
We were back on the board here in the early third round.
Thanks to the trade back we did with the New York Giants.
Still got our left tackle and we're keeping the Carson Wentz trade we did
earlier in the offseason from the Colts.
But pick 76, we do have two trade offers on the board here.
Really, I don't know if I like either of these as well, Stephen,
so we might just stay put here at 76.
But the Chicago Bears are offering us 83 in the 2022 sixth-round pick.
That's all we're getting from Chicago there, Steven.
What's the other one?
The other one here is Houston, and it's really not that great either.
It's 76 for 147 plus a 2022 third-round pick.
I don't even know if that's even worth it.
Yeah, that's tough.
Like, Houston's going to be bad next year,
so, like, you feel pretty confident that it's going to be, like,
a top 75 pick.
But I still – drop in 70 spots.
You're dropping 71 spots.
I'm not sure about that.
I'd probably – I definitely would decline the,
um, the bears offer. I'm probably declining the Houston offer as well, even though you get that
extra round three pick, which would be nice. Cause that means the next year's draft, we would
have the New York giants around to pick. And then we would also have the Houston Texans round three
pick. Uh, but that's 70, 70 drops back. Cause you also have to remember if we had,
if the Colts had made that trade earlier with, with the Steelers and had pick 83 in there,
whatever the number was, then maybe, maybe you make that trade because you've got another pick
coming up within the next seven picks. However, your next pick for the Colts is going to be 56 picks away, 52 picks away.
And there's a lot of gap in talent in a 50-player swatch of players.
So for me, I'd probably stick here at 76 and just see what we've got.
Yeah, I agree with you.
I would decline both those trades and stay put at 76 here.
And at this point, Steve, we need to address the pass rush in some sort of way.
So I think we should just lock in here at 76 on a pass rusher.
We can go over wide out real quick, though, see who's there.
Amari Rogers out of Clemson.
Tylan Wallace out of Oklahoma State.
Dwayne Eskridge out of Western Michigan.
And Nico Collins out of Michigan.
Top of the list there.
Going to cornerback as well, just in case.
We can look at some guys here.
Elijah Molden out of Washington. Kelvin Joseph out of Kentucky. Top of the list there. Going to cornerback as well, just in case. We can look at some guys here. Elijah Molden out of Washington. Kelvin Joseph out of Kentucky, top of the list here.
But looking at edge rushers, Stephen, there is a couple entry names still on the board.
You have Rashad Weaver out of Pittsburgh. Quincy Roach out of Miami. Peyton Turner
out of Houston is still there. And then you also have Shaka Toney out of Penn State on this list
as well, who is on this list. I do think at 76, we've
talked about this guy a lot here on the podcast.
I think he could really fill a Tyquan Lewis role,
a Dede Gaultry role as well as far as being inside-out versatility
on the defensive line.
He could be a rotational guy year one, maybe start down the road.
Peyton Turner out of Houston I think could make the most sense
off this list right here.
Yeah, I'll be totally honest with you.
I'm keeping a whiteboard like
writing down the different names and offers so i can keep track in my head of where where we're at
um i i already written peyton turner down as you once you listed him off um because i'm like that's
that's the guy that's he's gonna i think peyton turner's I think he's probably going to sneak into the back end of round two by the time draft day comes around.
He's got such versatility and length at the defensive end position.
I could see him, you know, climbing up draft boards pretty quick for those of us
that don't have the NFL ties.
Unless there's something there in the background that we don't know about,
which I've not heard anything of.
Peyton Turner makes a lot of sense, both on the field and in his versatility
and how he plays.
So I think Peyton Turner is the pretty obvious choice there at 76.
Let's lock it in, Stephen.
Peyton Turner, edge, defense tackle, hybrid.
Really, did he go out to 2.0 out of the University of Houston.
So, so far, the first three picks for the Colts.
You recoup that trade
with Carson Wentz, and you move back
and get Alex Leatherwood at 42 at the Giants.
You also get Brevin Jordan at 54.
You get Peyton Turner at 76.
I think that's a home run first three picks for the Colts here.
They're back on the board at 127,
Steven. No trade offers here. We've addressed left
tackle. We've addressed pass catcher, tight end, and also edge and defense tackle with Peyton Turner,
who can really play both positions if need be. So we're back on the board here at 127.
And I think at this point, it's either wide receiver or you add a defensive back for depth
purposes. So wide receiver, you have Seth Williams out of Auburn on the board, Jalen Darnett out of
North Texas, Austin Watkins out of UAB, Kay Johnson out of South Dakota State.
Those guys top the list right now for wide receiver on PFN's board.
Going over to defensive backs here for a second.
Cornerback, you have Keith Taylor out of Washington who was in the senior bowl,
did well for himself.
I believe he's a team captain as well, so he kind of fits the blue star mold there.
He tops the list for cornerbacks.
You have also D.J. Daniel out of Georgia.
You have looks like Trey Brown,
Oklahoma.
And then safety,
you have divine Diablo out of Virginia tech.
Like I mentioned at the top of the show,
Mike DeRese,
the Northeast area scout was at Virginia tech's pro day to day.
Divine Diablo can make some sense there as a third safety.
You also have DeMar Hamlin out of Pittsburgh,
Joshua Blitz out of Missouri and Jacoby Stevens at LSU,
topping the list for safeties there.
What's your opinion, Steven?
You're going to go pass rush or defensive back here?
Oh, I'm not sure I like a whole lot of these picks.
What do we have at defensive end and offensive guard?
Defensive end, we have Daylon Hayes out of Notre Dame,
and we also have Adeda Okunbo-Ogdenji out of Notre Dame, top of the list here.
Shaka Toney as well out of Penn State.
If you want to go for a true bendy pass rusher, he's still on the board there.
He can make some sense.
He's a blue star prospect as well.
And then for offensive line depth, going at left tackle,
you have Brady Christensen out of BYU if you want to add another young tackle.
Or offensive guard, you can go and get a guy like Robert Hainsey
out of Notre Dame, Aaron Banks out of Notre Dame.
Those guys top of the list there as well for offensive line depth.
Yeah, because I look at that and I just go,
I'm not in love with any of these guys at this point.
With the wide receiver part, I'm almost tempted to go with Aaron Banks,
the offensive guard out of Notre Dame.
But it's such a tough one.
Run through those – I'm not in love with any of the widers.
Is Daz Newsom still there, wide receiver?
Let me see here.
Yes, he is on the board, though.
It feels like with the way PFN's ranked him,
he should be there with our fifth-round pick.
He's about six, seven guys down the list.
Wow.
And then what about – just run off the names at corner again for me real quick.
Cornerback, we have – that's really not a great list here.
Keith Taylor out of Washington. You have DJ Daniel out of Georgia. Trey Brown out of Oklahoma, top of the
list here. Honestly, Steven, I mean, I know we just drafted Peyton Turner at edge, but he could
be more so like a type Juan Luis type where he could play inside and out. I wouldn't mind Shaka
Tony here out of Penn State. He's really bendy. He had a monster pro day. We know Chris Bauer likes
the athletic freaks and he was a team captain for penn state i know some coltons might say why are you addressing
edge rush back to back but it's also chris ballard here and the colts like we've seen so far
need to add more edge rush definitely if you just re-sign justin houston on a one-year deal
you need to add some more guys there i mean honestly i might be leaning towards shaka
tony out of penn state here i know you just added a guy in peyton turner but he could be more so
your janika autry while shaka tony could be more so your Janika Autry,
while Shaka Tony could be more so your bendy-tethered Kamoko Ture.
Yeah, because, like, with the guys that we saw at –
and this is something that everybody needs to keep in mind is
don't be surprised if the Colts address a position of perceived need
like Edge with multiple picks.
Because as you saw or as you heard with us,
we don't love any of those guys there at corner or wide receiver,
really at any of the positions, other positions,
but we like a couple guys there at the defense bend position.
So like Shaka Tony makes a lot of sense there, even at Ellerson Smith.
I don't know if he's available. That he's he's a guy that I'm, I'm pretty high on out
of Northern Iowa.
I'm fine taking Shaka Tony here as that, that bendy bendy address or that, that athletic
freak, um, that also qualifies, I believe as a blue star prospect.
Um, and so I'm totally, totally fine taking a shot at Tony here and, uh, just seeing what
we can get.
We've got two more picks left.
I think one 66 and two or seven or something like that.
Um, and just seeing what we get on the backend with those, those other picks.
Yeah.
Let's lock it in.
Steven, I, Ellison Smith's still on the board there, but that's kind of been our guys so
far.
So let's just switch it up a little bit, go to shock of Tony, see what happens there.
I really actually like his fit in this Colts defense.
So let's lock in Shaka Tony, edge rusher out of Penn State. You really have a dress defensive line
in a big way now, adding Peyton Turner to the mix, as well as I imagine signing a veteran at
some point, whether it be Justin Houston or someone else, and then drafting Peyton Turner
and Shaka Tony. So I really do like that pick. So pick shock of tony out of penn state going on the 165
now steven their fifth round pick we have a trade off on the board here from the green bay packers
who want to move up eight spots in the draft it's 165 and a 2022 seventh round pick for the cold so
with the way the compact game's gone for the cold so far that they're going to easily make that back
up i believe they have two six so far from per set. I think they've got a fifth and two six.
Yeah, fifth and two six.
Yeah, that's around the money there.
So 165 in the 20-22 seventh, and the Packers would send you 173 and 214.
So you move back eight spots, and you drop back
and get an extra pick in the draft.
Yeah.
Well, let's see.
What do we have here?
Yeah, at this point, we just addressed pass rush, double dip there.
So we don't need any drafting of those guys here.
There is a pass catcher on the board here.
There's a couple of guys that make some sense.
You have Sage Surratt out of Wake Forest, Daz Newsome out of North Carolina,
Josh Amitabh out of Illinois,
but it seems like maybe two or maybe all three of those guys I just mentioned
could still be there in eight picks with the way Pia Benz is on their board.
And you go offensive line depth here.
Robert Haynes is on the board there.
But if you want to add like a developmental pass catcher,
almost like a Desmond Patman 2.0, it feels like one of Newsome,
Surratt, or Amit or Beebe is going to be on the board here in eight picks
if you want to move back a little bit.
Yeah, I think I'm okay moving back on this one.
Let's go ahead and do it then.
165-20, 22-7, and we get back from the Colts from Green Bay, 173-214.
So Colts are back on the board here at 173,
and all those guys I just mentioned from wide receiver are still on the board.
Sage Serrata at Wake Forest, Daz Newsome out of North Carolina,
and Josh Amitabh out of Illinois.
Offensive line depth, Robert Hainsey is still there,
offensive guard, offensive tackle.
The list isn't as great.
I think Alaric Jackson out of Iowa is a top name on the board there.
So at this point, you can also look at safety too if you want.
Damar Hamlin out of Pittsburgh, Joshua Bledsoe out of Missouri,
and Jacoby Stevens out of LSU are still there as well
if you want to address that.
And in cornerback, Benjamin St. Juice out of Minnesota,
Thomas Graham out of Oregon, and Shamarjean Charles out of Appalachian State
are also on the board there.
So it's really up to defensive back depth
or if you want to add another pass catcher for development.
I feel like I want to add another pass catcher.
I've told you this so many times.
I'm really a huge fan of Josh Amit meter bb um in terms of just the athleticism
um and his just ability and ball skills like he's he was originally a usc guy that came to illinois
um he could be just an absolute terror and and especially just in the vertical game that the Colts want.
You let T.Y. Hilton stay for another year.
You get this guy, Joshua Meter-Beebe, and you go and you let him play
and learn the offense and put him on the outside, put him as that X,
and let him just go.
And you've got a six,
two athletic freak that is flying down the field with,
with good ball skills that can make plays.
I feel like I want to take a flyer on somebody like that,
especially here while we're in this fifth round, sixth round.
You know,
I feel like that's probably going to be a better,
better option for the Colts here than somebody like a Jazz Newsom or a Sage Chirant.
Like, I'm not a huge fan of Sage Chirant, to be honest, or however you pronounce his last name.
I'm much more of a fan of Amitabh Bibi based on his athletic profile and what I've seen, like just those wild plays that you see in games. I know that might not be a popular opinion by some other
people, but I'm just throwing it out there. I prefer Amitabh Bibi to Sarai at this point.
Yeah, I mean, obviously, Ballard likes the athletes too. And this is almost like Desmond
Patman 2.0. Take a late round flyer. If he hits, he hits in a big way.
And I'm with you on a meter BB.
I mean,
at this point in the draft at one 73,
why not just take a swing forward and see what happens.
Almost like Jacob B said last year in the draft,
like he's going to be a pretty guy.
If he doesn't work out,
he's not your future.
It's not that bad.
He could be a solid backup for you.
And I lead special team guy.
Illinois actually had their pro day last week.
Steven,
he actually had a 46 and a half inch vertical jump.
I saw it.
The combine record was 46 inches by Gerald sensible in 2005.
So a meter BB is off the charts athletics.
So let's go ahead and draft Josh and meter BB out of Illinois.
Six,
two,
six,
two with a 46 and a half inch vertical.
That's insane.
Yeah.
That's like,
you people have to understand when he jumps,
he's about 12 feet in the air.
Like if like at the tip of his hand,
like that's seriously how high this guy gets on his,
his jumps.
And just think of him in the jump ball situation with like Michael Pittman on
one side and a meter BB on the other.
Sick.
Yeah.
That'd be fun. And Patman versus a meter BB and camp will bera Beebe on the other. Sick. Yeah, that would be fun.
And Patman versus Amitra Beebe and Campbell would be a fun battle
for a roster spot.
Yeah.
Let's go ahead now and dive into 206, Stephen.
Six-round pick for the Colts.
We are on the clock again.
Looking at the board here, I have to imagine either offensive line,
defensive back is the top of the list here.
Going to offensive tackles, the list isn't that great.
Dan Moore out of Texas A&M, Alara Jackson out of Iowa,
top of the offense tackle list.
Offense guard, Larry Borum out of Missouri.
I obviously never heard of that name.
Robert Jones out of Middle Tennessee.
So really not a lot of great guys there as far as offensive line depth goes.
And they just signed, by the way, Sam Tevey and I believe Zach Kiefer
are going to send Julian Davenport here as soon as he's waiting on a pending physical.
So I think they've added a couple guys on offense line depth.
So if they want to wait until the seventh round to do that, they easily could.
So defensive back can make the most sense here, Stephen.
D'Amedore Leenwar, cornerback out of Oregon.
Elijah Griffin, cornerback out of USC, topped the list as far as corners go.
And safety.
I know there's a culture interest in Keanu Neal,
early on for A&C for a third safety.
The guys topping the list here on Pia Thin's board.
Israel Mukwamu out of South Carolina,
the cornerback safety hybrid, really is freakishly athletic.
He has the length as well.
Derek Forrest out of Cincinnati.
Paris Ford out of Pittsburgh, top of the list here.
I think here, I mean, you can take a swing on one of these defensive backs,
in my opinion.
Yeah, I think defensive back probably makes the most sense here.
I'm interested by the Mokouamou.
Is South Carolina still there? Israel Mukawamu?
Yeah, Israel Mukawamu. He is a one that played cornerback
this past year at South Carolina. His stock has kind of torpedoed a little bit
throughout the process. I think he ran a little slower than expected, but he's a guy
who's very lengthy. I'm pulling up his profile now just to look at him a little more in depth for
the listeners out there because he's a guy early on the process.
That was one that I really did enjoy watching because he has the length.
He is, man, this is crazy length for a cornerback safety.
He's long.
He's six, four.
So yeah, he's, that's why it was like, wait, is that,
is this the same guy that I'm thinking of like
he's still on the board there because that's a guy that I think would be interesting just
because of his versatility he may not be able to play um like I don't think he'll do well in man
um but I think that he could do pretty well in zone um and then he can play in those sub packages too as that third safety uh
it just gives that versatility so that's kind of where i would lean on this pick uh just to
take a flyer on somebody like that yeah and i'm on his draft network profile right now
muquamu 64205 and um the draft networks profile him. His scheme fit is preferably,
they say he could do very well in a sub heavy zone scheme,
which is right in the Colts alley there.
I am.
Yeah.
Outside corner.
That can situationally play in a slot has some appeal as a slot safety
positionalist,
sub package defender and nickel sets.
So yeah,
that kind of fits right with the Colts need there for a third safety.
So let's lock in Israel Mukwamu safety corner hybrid out of South
Carolina.
Tradey guy.
He could really do well very long too.
So this could be like a Marvell Tell-esque pick for the Colts here
late in the process.
So let's go on to 214 now, Stephen.
This is the Colts' last pick in the draft, I believe.
They trade their seventh-round pick in the Giants trade for their first one
with Alex Leatherwood.
Just lock it in with Tommy Kramer.
Hey, yeah, that's where I'm at.
That's exactly where I was going with this one.
He's still on the board there. It's kind of shocking. I mean,
I don't know about you, Steve, but why I watched Notre Dame like you,
and I feel like Tommy Kramer is better than a seventh round pick.
Yeah, but I see this all, I see this all the time in mock drafts.
I don't think Tommy Kramer is going to end up being a seventh round pick in
real life.
I think he's probably going to sneak in that early day three range
when all is said and done.
I mean, he is limited, but he – I mean, he works hard.
Like, it's one of those guys that he just gets the job done.
And so I would love to be able to pick up a guy like Tommy Kramer is that as
a guy who could compete over with Glowinski as the possible starting right
guard. And you basically have, you know,
your two guards are Notre Dame grads.
Quentin Nelson would probably love it too,
to have another fighting Irish alumni there on the offensive
line with him.
I feel like Tommy Kramer is just
a perfect fit in this
offense and what they want to do.
They want to run power
with the Colts. They want to
run the ball. They want to run it down your throat.
That's what Tommy Kramer
is pretty good at.
So I feel like if nothing else, he would be a really, really high-quality depth signing there for the interior of the offensive line.
Let's go for it, Stephen.
2-14, we're going to lock in Tommy Kramer out of Notre Dame.
And at this point, I mean, if you were to draft him, for example, or even any guy late in this draft for offensive line depth, at this point, the Colts hitting the training camp
for backups would have Danny Pinter, Tommy Kramer, Julian
Davenport, Sam Tevey, Will Holden. And that was a big issue with the
Colts last year was offensive line depth. And reading off those names I just mentioned there,
it's kind of solved, isn't it? Yeah, I would feel very confident
with the Colts depth with
the versatility of all those players too like sam's heavy being able to play being a swing tackle
at right guard right tackle or left tackle um julian davenport same thing like being able to
play in a pinch if he needs to um you know danny pinter being able to play literally all over the
offensive line,
and then you get a guy like Tommy Kramer in there as well
that could play either guard spot.
I'd feel very confident with the Colts' offensive line depth going in.
It's crazy.
Chris Baller talks about how he needs to upgrade a certain position group,
and then he does it in one offseason.
He did it with the linebackers.
He did it with offensive line at one point.
He did it with the defensive line.
He's just been masterful in the way that he's been able to take positions of –
kind of position groups that are not as strong and then flip that into a strength
within one offseason it's been really impressive to watch looking at this draft as a whole steve i
know we've done three so far of our live mock drafts but this one might be honestly one of
my favorites with just the way it came out because they kind of solved all their depth issues in one
fell swoop here you trade back the giants you get Alex Leatherwood still 21 picks later.
Probably a guy who's going to be in that 40, late 30 range anyways.
So you get Alex Leatherwood at 42.
You get Brevin Jordan at 54 to be your F tight end.
You could really feast in year one.
You double dip at 76 and 127 with edge rushers with Peyton Turner and Shaka
Tony.
You take a mid-round flyer on Joshua Meter Beebe who can make the roster
and compete with Desmond Patman as that kind of
freak athlete, Z receiver,
X receiver at 173.
Then you add defensive back
and offensive line depth at 206 and 214
with the trade we did with the Green Bay Packers
adding Israel Mukwamu
and Tommy Kramer. I feel like the
Colts roster at this point adding in all these guys.
Plus, don't forget the Colts now have
imagine a top 40 pick in next year's draft with the Carson Wentz trade
because of the move back with the Giants.
The Giants gave up 42-76 in a 20-22 second to move up to 21 in this draft.
So I feel like this draft is really perfect, Stephen.
Yeah, I feel really confident in this one, Evan.
You know, solving the left tackle and adding some depth,
some quality depth at the defensive end position,
along with getting that vertical pass catcher at tight end,
it's something that they've talked about as needs throughout the offseason.
And Chris Ballard and Frank Reich, they're going to tell you what they're going to do.
All you have to do is pay attention.
So that's kind of what we're doing in this process is we're just paying attention for the Colts to get those players still
being able to trade back, pick up that extra second round pick from the New York Giants in 2022.
It mitigates the loss of what will likely be a late first round pick. So it's kind of no different
than any other draft Chris Ballard has been in. When he has a late first round pick. So it's kind of no different than any other draft Chris Ballard
has been in. When he has a late first round pick, he typically just trades out of the first round
and picks up other picks. For the Colts to be able to still have, they won't have seven picks
in next year's draft because they gave up that future round seven in that Green Bay Packers
trade. But to get the guys that they got in this draft,
I'd feel really confident because you filled a lot of holes
and you added a lot of quality depth at positions
that you really needed to add depth at.
So I'd feel really confident in how this board fell out
and the players that they put in that they'd be able to come in
and play right away.
So, yeah, I think we nailed it. I'm obviously biased, but I think we nailed this one.
Steven, awesome stuff as always, man. Really appreciate coming on tonight's podcast for
Live Mock Draft 3.0 for Colts fans. We're now a month away from the NFL Draft, so expect
a lot of heavy-duty draft coverage here on Locked on Colts for the next month or so.
Steven and I will be having a weekly mock draft lead-up to it. I imagine we'll be having some pretty in-depth stuff, too,
as we get closer and closer to the draft,
and especially after the draft, whatever they pick.
It's going to be a huge draft for the Annapolis Colts.
But Colts fans, go ahead, if you're not already,
go ahead and follow Steven on Twitter at NiceReachSteven.
Go listen to his podcast, Pot of Pancake, over at Stan P. Blue.
Steven, appreciate your time tonight.
Thanks, Evan. Have a great one.
