Starting point is 00:00:00 Are Anthony Richardson and Kenny Moore the second still being on the roster, a sign of Chris Ballard's incompetence? We hit that question and many others from the Everyday Air Club today on Locked on Colts. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to Locked on Colts. I'm Zach Hicks. That's Jake Arthur.
Starting point is 00:00:33 And today we are diving into some Q&A. Before we dive into that, though, today's episode is brought to you by Fanduel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if their first bet wins. Head to Fandul.com to get started. And like I said, on today's show, we're diving some Q&A, some post-draft Q&A from the Locked-on Colts Everyday Air Club. So if you want to be included in these Q&As going forward, make sure you are checking out the link below in the show notes. We have a bunch of topics today, ranging from Richardson and Kenny Moore to undraft free agents to kickers, I'm sure, in here as well.
Starting point is 00:01:08 So we got plenty of questions from the Everydayer Club. So Jake, let's kick it off here. I'll throw it to you because I think you're more equipped to answer stuff like this than I am being in that building every day as our boots on the ground. Do you think Anthony Richardson and Kenny Moore still being here is because they have just no trade value whatsoever? Or is it due to Ballard's incompetence? Like he doesn't want to trade him or whatever that means in this question here or both or
Starting point is 00:01:34 a little bit of neither? Like how do you kind of interpret, I guess, those two players still being on the roster despite both actively wanting to be traded out? Yeah, that one from our Argya, you lost here. So that's an interesting one because it, I don't want to say incompetence on Chris's part, but it's perhaps a little bit of everything. I think first and foremost with Kenny, I was a little surprised he didn't get traded during the draft just because I think at this point they'll trade him for just about anything because he They want to honor his request, right? And we saw them trade Michael Pittman Jr.
Starting point is 00:02:08 for a bag of peanuts to the Steelers, essentially. So you kind of thought you would get that same trade me. You know, Stefan Gilmore before then and Iheim Hines, we've seen them trade guys who actually asked for it before. So I was a little surprise there. It could have been just there wasn't much market for Kenny. That's also another possibility. But Anthony, I did think that one was going to be a little more difficult.
Starting point is 00:02:33 I was hoping that the draft was maybe the hard deadline that would actually kind of crack this thing open and make it happen. But I just think that Ballard doesn't want to take – I don't think he wants to take any less than like a mid-round pick for Anthony. You know what I mean? And I think when you look at it, number one, I just don't think there's that many suitors out there. And as you see, each day it seems like a new team is going out and finding their backup quarterback. like the Packers today, for example, they went out and signed Therod Taylor to be their new QB2, and they were the strongest team tied to Anthony Richardson throughout this whole thing.
Starting point is 00:03:12 And then lo and behold, our guy Stephen Holder reports just like moments later that, oh yeah, Anthony Richardson is returning to the Colts after, you know, being absent for the first couple weeks of the voluntary offseason workouts. So that probably all goes hand in hand. I just don't know if there's that many suiters out there, maybe for either player, we do know that Kenny is almost certainly going to be released if nothing ever materializes there. And then Anthony, gosh, this maybe opens the window for him to be around in 2026. Yeah. I mean, when we're speaking of incompetence when it comes to these trades,
Starting point is 00:03:49 like, I do think part of this is just the Colts handling both situations so poorly. I mean, we think back to when, you know, at the beginning of the offseason, when the Colts signed Daniel Jones to that big extension, we all know that there's no future for Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis, right? His future at best is third string quarterback next season. And instead of trying to prop up his value and pushing him like, oh, it was a tough decision. He's such a great quarterback, but Daniel Jones just wowed us too much. But don't worry, we still think Richardson's great. He's super healthy. He's perfect. Instead, they keep touting out the injured eye. And like, he still has a long way to go with the eye. There's still visual limitations.
Starting point is 00:04:29 stuff like that's not selling a guy to other teams that's bringing down his value and then if you're going to hold him for a mid round pick after bringing down his value and he hasn't i mean look he's barely played in the NFL i don't know how you're selling this to other teams and he's not going to be the backup next season so i just don't know what the plan is there with anthony richardson and then the kenny more like if we're talking again incompetence with kenny more why so close to the draft are we talking about trades with him why was this not a week one one, a free agency type thing. Why was this not, you know, as free agency opened up?
Starting point is 00:05:04 Why is it one week before the draft? We're talking about potentially trading a player when most teams are committed to the roster they have or at least want to go into the draft and, and kind of go with the roster that way. Like, it's just such poor handling on both situations. So I understand where ULoss is coming from with this question here. I do think it is a bit of mismanagement, I guess, on Chris Bowdo and the Colts part. But also, I do think that it's just.
Starting point is 00:05:29 hard to find the value for these guys right now. With Richardson, like you said, Jake, when you're looking for a backup quarterback, most teams want someone who can come in and win a game or two for you and be reliable. Richardson has barely stayed healthy in his NFL career. He missed most of last season despite never taking a starter snap for the team because he got injured. And I know it was a freak accident, but it's still an injury that happened to him. And it just goes on the long list of his injuries in the NFL. And then with many more, it's a $10 million cap hit for an acquiring. team this late in the offseys. I know there are plenty of teams that still have cap space,
Starting point is 00:06:03 but they're not really accounting for moving a draft pick for a 30-plus-year-old slot corner who had a bad season last year and taking on that cap hit this late in the process. So I do think part of it is mismanagement, but also I don't know what the value is for either of these guys. And I do think the Colts are going to budge a little bit with Kenny, but with Richardson, I don't know if they are anytime soon. And I just, I don't think you're going to get that value you want for him. I don't think he has. has value for you guys either. So I don't, I don't really know what the point is with all of it. Going a little nihilistic here with it, but I guess we'll see with the Richardson situation.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Do you have any other closing thoughts on this topic or do you want to die to the next question? Well, I was going to say with Kenny, I know he requested the trade, but it's like, maybe, maybe this was all just on his side of it. But I agree with you. Like, why was it so close to the draft and like, well after free agency when this came up? Like, did you? you have no inkling of this coming through the off season? Like you do, you do, uh, like exit interviews with guys after each season. So I'm a little surprised it took that long. And then with, with Anthony, maybe it's just a fear of, you know, if, if you accept like a seventh,
Starting point is 00:07:18 six or seventh round pick or whatever, you're kind of admitting just an, uh, an utter failure of the entire Anthony Richardson experiment. And I'm just a little, I wonder if there are a little. apprehensive to take that huge L. Oh, but getting a fifth round pick, you're not admitting that by any means, right? Or fourth, I mean, if you were, I mean, gosh, the best you could get is a fourth round pick. If you take a fourth round pick for the fourth overall pick a couple years ago, you're still admitting a loss on here.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Like, come on. Absolutely. Yeah, I don't know. But yeah, it is what it is. We'll see if anything comes of that in the coming weeks. But this next one is from Beltway Rule. Do you think any of the undrafted free agent running backs make the team over DJ J. Giddens or Seth McGowan, neither of those two have experience on special teams.
Starting point is 00:08:04 So I've mentioned the guy I'm really curious about is Jordan Vaughn from Abilene Christian. He's enormous. He's what, like 6-2, 6-3, he's over 220 pounds, really good athlete with a vast special teams background. So I'm pretty curious about him. And I don't want to sleep on Ulysses Bentley either. There's something about him. I mean, he got onto the field a little bit as a special team's player last year early in
Starting point is 00:08:27 the season. So if you're talking about a guy from last year, Bentley, I don't want to sleep on him necessarily. But Jordan Vaughn is my rookie undrafted guy this year for sure. Yeah, there's another undrafted running back too. If you want to look him up real quick for me, Jake, while I stall for time. He was a smaller back that was more a pass catcher, if I remember. I know you're talking about. Yeah, I just want to make sure his name is right here.
Starting point is 00:08:50 But that's another guy who factors into this equation as well. And I certainly think those guys have a chance to beat out a get-ins or McGowan. You know, obviously they're going to be. Yeah, yeah, Lincoln pair. Lincoln pair. A little bit smaller guy. Yeah, Texas State. I knew it was Texas State.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I just didn't want to, you know, speak out the wrong side of my mouth here. But, yeah, I do think that there is a chance for these guys. They're going to be behind the eight ball coming into camp. But, you know, you always have a chance when you get in a training camp, especially if you can show out on special teams or as a pass protector. So I think those guys are going to have a good chance to compete. It's not like, you know, McGowan was a first round pick, right? He was a seventh round selection.
Starting point is 00:09:26 It's not like Giddons was a first round. first round pick. He was a fifth round selection coming off a bad season. So there is the, the crack door for them to, to break their way onto the roster. It's just on these guys to show that they can pass protect or play special teams and win over the coaching staff. So I think they absolutely can. I'm not going to make any bold predictions until we see them in training camp, but they absolutely can come in and win a job here. But coming up, we have a couple more questions from the Everydayer Club that Jake and I will dive into here in just a second. workplace chaos. The deadlines are stacking up. So hop on in there, join the fun, and you will get these perks. Just go to locked on colds.com or click the link in our show notes to join. So let's move on here. This question is from Must Be Chop. All right, Zach, so it says here, there seems to be a lot of questions around the cornerback room in general, but I personally, I personally think this is the strongest room top to bottom. So why have I seen multiple sources stating that one of the Colts biggest needs after the draft and free agency is more cornerbacked up?
Starting point is 00:12:09 So explain why, like you're loaded with names at corner, but why is it actually a need? Yeah, I think the biggest reason why people would list it as a need is just how you view a Mooney Award. You view him as a very temporary placeholder until that next injury that knocks him out of his career for retirement and then the Colts are scrambling after that, then yeah, you view cornerback as a pretty big need. But if you're willing to bet that we're healthy this season, that he's fully committed and ready to go this year, yeah, there's no reason to really think that that corner is that
Starting point is 00:12:43 big of a need. Like, yes, there are some concerns in the room. But I think if we're doing like general rooms on the team or general position groups on the team, like if we're not being hyper specific about it, like three tech defensive a tackle is their strongest position on the roster right now with Buckner, Wooden, and Tomi, because that's just three guys who are capable of playing starter snaps. But I think if we're being like generalized about it, yeah, like Corner in general is probably their best group from top to bottom because you have Ward and Gardner who are both all
Starting point is 00:13:13 pros in their career. You have Wally who was a top 100 pick that's going to be in the slot, which we'll talk about more in a second. And then you have Cam Taylor Britt, who was a good performer in his first couple years with rookie contract. You have, you know, a few other just intriguing pieces, Mackay Blackman, who's had some good run in the NFL, not as much recently, but early on his career, has some good run. Jonathan Edwards, Cameron Mitchell, who finished the year pretty strong last year, Jalen Jones, who started for two years of his NFL career as well. Like,
Starting point is 00:13:43 there are guys to get you kind of excited about this cornerback room. So I understand viewing as a strength, but I also understand viewing it as a concern because you're one Mooney-Wa concussion away from that same revolving door that was going on for most of last season with Mackay Blackman, Cam Taylor Britt, who's coming off a really rough season, Jalen Jones, who we don't know is loved in the locker room right now with the coaching staff that is. And then Edwards and Mitchell, who are undrafted for agents who are still trying to figure out their games. So, yeah, I understand both sides of it. I would probably lean towards it being a little bit stronger than weaker, but again, I'm very concerned about Mooney Ward and I don't know how long. It just feels like a
Starting point is 00:14:22 ticking time bomb a little bit with Mooney Ward. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Hopefully you can play all 17 games and all the concerns are put to rest. But, you know, when a guy is contemplating retirement for part of the offseason, it lingers in the back of your head. And I'm sure it's lingering in the back of his head as well. Yeah, I, on the surface, it's a very deep group, just like we said last year, though, but we quickly found out how delicate that balance can be. And I think that's kind of the same case here. Like this is a big leap of faith for this corner room to like declare them a strong group. But there's question marks about most of the guys here. Like despite the heavy name recognition, like, I really don't
Starting point is 00:15:03 have concerns about sauce. I think he'll bounce back and be totally fine, even though he was very injured last year with the Colts. I'm not concerned about sauce. But Mooney Ward, we obviously have to, like, Mooney is kind of on the same level as Anthony Richardson was in his second and third seasons. Like, you just have to hold your breath every time you see. him out there because every time he gets hit, you almost are under the assumption that he's going to get hurt. So that's very unfortunate, but that's just where we are with the reality of it. Justin Wally, coming back from an ACL, he looked great in his rookie offseason, but he never even got to be on the field for the regular season. So that's a big question, Mark. Jalen Jones, like you
Starting point is 00:15:44 mentioned, is a guy who you liked in the previous regime with Gus Bradley, but he doesn't seem to be in favor with Lou Aniromo's staff. So and Cam Taylor Britt, shoot, you know, with Cincinnati, he kind of fell out of favor there with the new coaching staff, wasn't as strong of a player in his last couple years as he was in his first couple, had the legal issues as well, that all that together kind of made him forced his exit out of Cincinnati. So there's like the high end, there's some really good potential with it. But just as high as the ceiling is, is as low as the floor is because.
Starting point is 00:16:21 You know, these guys could play at a really high level, some of them even pro bowl level, or these guys can make such little impact that they might as well not be on the team. So there's just a big variance in the ceiling and the floor with this one. So I think that's where the question's kind of lie. And then we got another question here for Must Be Chopped still about the cornerback room. Who is the frontrunner to start at slot corner after Kenny is gone? So I think you and I both are just like moving past Kenny all together because a release is on the table.
Starting point is 00:16:53 So if there's no trade that comes up, he probably gets released. So take Kenny out of the equation. What's your look at the slot corner spot? Yeah, I mean, I think the Colts of Allbut said it's going to be Justin Wally lining up in that slot. He's a guy who, I can't remember if it was something we heard throughout the offseason last year from Stuyken or Lou or Chris Bout
Starting point is 00:17:12 or whoever said it, kind of said they viewed Wally as a long-term slot option for them. That's why they felt the need to go out and get him in the top 100 of this past draft because they like that potential for him. So this was kind of always the plan. So it doesn't feel like it's like they're rushing it by Kenny Moore's request for departure. Heck, it almost is like they were planning for it. So maybe they should have traded Kenny earlier in the all season.
Starting point is 00:17:35 But I digress. I digress from that conversation. But yeah, I think Wally is the guy they've wanted there since they drafted him. So I think the time is right for him, especially with Kenny leaving. And I think they're going to give him every opportunity to win that spot. Now, if he's just struggling, because sometimes, guys when they get into that spot just aren't capable of playing it. Like I know we played it a little bit last year in training camp, so I think that they
Starting point is 00:17:57 feel good about it. But if it's just not working out for them, then I think that they'll try Mackay Blackman at it for sure. I think we could see, shoot, Jalen Jones maybe is like a big slot. I don't think they would. It's tight ends or specialized match. Yeah. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:18:14 I'm like early down stuff too, but I don't know if he's got the feat for that. Yeah, I think it would just probably McCoy Blackman or they probably to go out and sign a vet at that point. But yeah, I'm pretty sure it's just going to be Justin Wally's job. And then in a pinch, Mackay Blackman or Austin Brown, the undrafted free agent from Wisconsin. I think they might view him as a slot. Trey Washington played some slot in college. So maybe he could compete for that depth spot.
Starting point is 00:18:39 But I think it's going to be Justin Wally's job to lose in camp. And I don't really see him losing that job as long as he stays healthy. Yeah, I see Wally as the starter there with. Blackman is probably the next man up. Outside of that, just at corner, you have like Wyatt Echler and Rob Carter, Jr. You mentioned the other safeties that can step up, which probably makes more sense. Yeah, those are my first two kind of in the pecking order there. I'm under the assumption.
Starting point is 00:19:06 That's how it's going to look. So coming up, we're going to close it out with kind of a focus on second year guys and who might actually stand out that didn't really get the opportunity to do much last year. The NBA playoffs are here. It's a pretty good matchup so far. been watching and every possession matters. Starting point is 00:20:13 All right, welcome back, everybody. We are taken every day or club Q&A today. So let's go ahead and keep this rig rolling here, Zach. is another one for Beltway Rule. What about the team are you most optimistic about going into the season? What are you most pessimistic about? I would say I'm most optimistic about the skill position players around Daniel Jones performing next season. You know, Jonathan Taylor is coming off the best, arguably the best season of his career, right?
Starting point is 00:20:43 Like a very, very good season last year. Tyler Warren, I think going into year two, we typically see players hit their stride a little bit more in year two because they're getting more just acclimated to the NFL style and the NFL length of a season. So I think we're going to see an even better Tyler Warren. And then Alec Pierce and Josh Downs still on the outside, I feel pretty good about those pass catchers on that side of the football. So I would say the most optimistic for sure about those guys, especially as Alec Pierce is like wide receiver one. I think you showed everything you need last year to say that he could be a wide receiver one. In terms of pessimism, though, man.
Starting point is 00:21:22 There's a lot, I think, in terms of, like, things that could just wear on you a little bit. I think just the current edge rush room, maybe. Like, even though I do think Latu is going to have a little bit more of a step this year, I think he's going to probably break that 10-sac plateau that we've been hoping for. I just, I don't love the other edge rushers, like, with what they have right now and kind of where they've gone with it. Also, I'd also say, like, pessimistic about DeForest Buckner's health as well, if we want to say that, too, Jake.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Yeah. That neck injury scares me, man. Like, I don't know what he's going to look like this season. And if we're, that kind of lumps in with the, the pass rush where it's like, if you're already not feeling good about the other pass rushers besides Laotu, Latu,
Starting point is 00:22:07 and you're worried about DeForest Buckner's neck, I'm pretty pessimistic about that going into next season. So most optimistic about the past catchers, especially Pierce and Warren and Taylor, obviously as you're running back. but certainly pessimistic about that pass rush and their ability to win quick without blitzing. I'm just not super confident. I'm hoping for the Atatamiwa Adabori superstar breakout this year.
Starting point is 00:22:33 I think that's what we've really got to hope for at this point. Yeah, I say I'm most optimistic about the fact that I do think they got more explosive on defense. I don't think the job is done on defense, but I like some. of the things they've done there like cj allen and a j halsey i think are really really good additions there i like ikeem davis gaiter getting in there as well like i i don't think what germane pratt provided was bad by any stretch last year uh overall as like a run defender but like in general i like that move um i like arden key as your third pass rusher if he is your third I will say the pessimism, though, is probably twofold, the reliance on players returning from injury and the pass rush.
Starting point is 00:23:28 So you explain the pass rush thing perfectly well. So I'll just talk about the reliance on guys returning from injury. You know, you mentioned Buckner. That's, you know, he's three tech is a pretty deep group, luckily. And like, I think they would live with themselves if Colby Wooden wound up starting several games. but like DeForest Buckner being a starter and him and Grover Stewart being at their age with Buckner's neck that's not great. Justin Wally, Mooney Ward. Again, I already said I'm fine with Sauce Gardner, but you know, Daniel Jones, like the most important player on your team is coming back from a very significant injury.
Starting point is 00:24:04 So there's a lot of, there's a lot of guys who I don't know if they have great depth behind the ones who are injured in certain instances. So that's probably what I'm most pessimistic about. Moving on here from, this one's from our guy, Melvin. So this could be the same player if you want. Who needs to have a really good season among the second year players? And then who do you think might be like a surprise or breakout among the second year players? Yeah, I mean, I think the one who needs it the most, especially for the Colts, is Jalen Toomeloal, right?
Starting point is 00:24:36 Like that's absolutely the biggest one, the most important one for the Colts. Like, look, it'd be awesome. if Tyler Warren took another big step, or if Justin Wally broke out or Jalen Travis broke out, or gosh, let's say DJ Giddens or Hunter Woller, right? Like those would be a lot of fun if those guys broke out. But the one that impacts winning or losing the most among all those guys, well, maybe Jalen Travis might have an argument there, but it is almost certainly going to be Jailun Lowe. It has to be.
Starting point is 00:25:04 It has to be, right? If he's lined up to be your starter as it right now at the edge position across from Layat Tu Latu, he's going into year two after a pretty bad year one. Like you need this guy to break through. I mean, if he can give you five, six sacks, like that's fine for comparing where he started last year. But you almost want him, I mean, you want him to break out even further than that, right? You want him to emerge as this like surprise of the year candidate.
Starting point is 00:25:29 So if you had to pick one and just throw all the other ones in the trash, like you would say Jalen to him a low out for sure. Now, who do I think breaks out, though? I like Jalen Travis for this. I think Travis showed some really good thing late last season. There are still some areas that he can get a little bit better from, you know, he's still a stiff player and still some of the stuff in past protection. You want to see him be a little bit more crafty as a past protector rather than just
Starting point is 00:25:53 established position and just like sit and hold there. But I do think that there is so much potential in his frame for how explosive he is, how powerful he is, how big he is. Like there is so much room to grow for him. I'm not saying he's going to be Jordan My Lodder or anything like that, but I think he can be a starting caliber offensive tackle in this league. So as a former fourth round pick who played like a month of football last year, I think the runway is clear for him to really take off in year two and break out and
Starting point is 00:26:22 and have a very good season. And also Tony Sprono Jr. backs him. So I think I'm really putting some good money down here on Jalen Travis. But who do you got, Jake, do you have the same players as me or any difference there? Yeah, the guy who needs it is easily to him a low-out because you, you can look at it multiple ways. Like let's say he's handed the starting job. He obviously needs to perform at a high level.
Starting point is 00:26:45 Let's say Arden Key gets the starting job or someone else gets the starting job. Well, it's because to him a low out didn't step up enough to earn that spot. Because like his style of play, as long as he has a good summer, he should be the starter because like he's a strong side end with some good power to his game. He should be a good run defender like he should be the guy starting there. So he has to be like he's the most critical one like I don't think there's any question there. And then the guy, the breakout slash comeback player, I'll say Justin Wally. I mean, I think he is going to have a very clear runway to have a lot of playing time as the starting nickel as long as that sticks there.
Starting point is 00:27:26 And I mean, if something happens from one of the guys on the boundary, I mean, I think it's very clear Wally is going to play several hundred snaps this year. I don't know if he'll wind up playing a thousand. he probably would have last year because the roles have kind of changed a little bit because of health. But Wally's going to play a ton of football. And I mean, coming off the ACL, that stinks, obviously. But we've seen guys play good ball the year after an ACL. It's not necessarily in Achilles. But a sleeper for me might be DJ Giddens.
Starting point is 00:27:57 If they, like, if they just say, you know, special teams be damned, we're going to, we're going to commit to running for 2,000 yards as a team or whatever. and we're just going to really have a lot of, you know, a lot of carries out there, not just Jonathan Taylor and they let him play without all the special team stuff, then maybe DJ Giddens can have a good season. I mean, my hope for him is, you know, Marlon Mack took a couple years to really take hold to. Like, they had him as a compliment to Frank Gore a little bit as a rookie, but he really took off in his second year.
Starting point is 00:28:29 So that's kind of my hope for him. Maybe he has a similar career trajectory to Marlon Mack. Yeah, no, I can. can totally see that. And then I think Hunter Woller is also a sneaky pick just because we know they love him internally and they're going to find ways to get him on the field. So I think they're going to find ways
Starting point is 00:28:45 to get him out there. We did have one more question on here. We don't have time here. But Melvin, we are going to probably do a whole episode on your question.
