Welcome in to the Colts Squad Show.
It's the Colts preseason opener.
I'm your host, Derek Schultz.
We're talking all about it.
Who's ready to completely overreact everything that we just saw?
And I'm Zach Hicks, and I just got a sobering reminder of the state of the quarterback
room in Indianapolis for this season.
Alan Pinkett here once again, just happy that football season has begun.
Colts Nation rise up.
It's the Colts Squad, sponsored by game time.
everything Indianapolis Colts every week covering all the big hits and game changing plays from
the Circle City the way only the locked on podcast network can it's time to squad up the cult
squad show welcome once again to the Colts squad show I'm your host Derek shultz
I've been a sports talker in Indianapolis for many years and I'm joined by legendary
nerdame running back Alan Pinkett and former NFLer as well and you every dayers of course know
Zach Hicks, our pal Jake Arthur, who is part of the dynamic duo of Locked
Colts, is boots, boat shoes.
I'm assuming he has not open-toed sandals down there in Baltimore for working purposes
at the game right now at M&T Bank Stadium.
But Jake hopefully will join us coming up in the second half of the show as we're talking
about the Colts and Ravens in the season debut for both teams.
We're going to discuss, of course, the big news from tonight, which is never what you want
to see, but the Anthony Richardson injury, also how he and Daniel Jones looked in their
reps tonight, standout performers on both sides of the ball in both a good and not so good
way. Also a closer examination of the guys that we deem to be on the cut line fighting for their
spots on the 53 man roster and sharing our biggest takeaways from this game and really just
the Colts week overall in Baltimore with some of the joint practices because I feel like
we were able to learn a lot from those games. But guys, look, again, take it a little bit with
a grain of salt. I say tongue and cheek, kind of overreacting, underreacting. It's preseason football,
right both of these teams were without a myriad of their number ones
Baltimore started a bunch of their twos the Colts did as well
but let's start with the quarterbacks and let's start with the biggest news
which is the injury thankfully just a dislocated pinky Shane Steichen
confirmed that on the television broadcast with Lara Overton
saying that they popped it out popped it back in
Richardson obviously did not return to the game he only ended up getting two
series and the second series wasn't even really a full series because of the hit
but Zach you know you're our film guy right i wanted to kind of take us through that play because
there was a lot of talk on social media hey is the the running back supposed to do something here
did the tackle mitt was it a miscommunication take us through that play who's at fault and really just
what all happened on the on the anthony Richardson injury yeah real quick before i get to that
we were just informed by jake arthur through our text message here that justin wally the
Colts cornerback that got injured in practice that tore his ACL in that practice the other day.
So to make a bad night even worse, Justin Wally will be out for the entire season as well.
So that's probably the worst news of the night, honestly, compared to everything else.
So I just didn't want to get that out there to everybody.
Man, what a horrible night for Colts football.
But yeah, let's get into talking about this play with Anthony Richardson.
And Derek, I will use you as my litmus test to make sure I'm,
explaining everything properly here. If I, if anything goes over your head, yell at me.
Alan, I think you're going to understand a lot of what I'm saying.
This is exactly what my wife does.
Yes, exactly. Perfect. Perfect. So basically when it comes to pass protection, there are multiple
schools of thought with how to protect against blitzes or sin pressure or when we assume pressure
is coming. You can keep more guys into block to give your quarterback more time or get more
guys out in the formation out in the area of past catching. So you can give that quarterback more
options and more answers to face that blitz. So what Shane Steichen typically believes is empty
protection, five-man protection against whatever blitz or sim blitz is coming. Get the running
backs out and out of the backfield so you have easy avenues for your quarterback to to attack it
here. So when we're looking at this play, Baltimore loves their send pressures. They have six,
seven guys around the line of scrimmage. Any of these guys can be coming. They're crowding
the offensive line. It looks like a blitz is coming. So you look at the Colts formation. They have a
three by two to the right of the quarterback they have a running back tight end wide receiver to the
left two wide receivers and when you're looking at the eventual routes of these guys are running it
looks like on the left side they're running like deeper curls like around the sticks they're getting
stuff more down the field on the left side and then they're matching that on the right side
with a scat protection with scat where you're getting the running back into the flat you're getting
the two receivers in really quick spot routes that are like five yard routes and that's basically
your blitz read. That is the side that you want to be setting to if you think a blitz
is coming. So when you're reading what's in front of you on that play, you have to be reading
that a blitz is coming. Even if they bail out of this blitz, you want to be setting to the right
side here because you have your running back out of the backfield right there as a quick
option. And you have those two receivers, the tight end and the receiver, hitting their quick
landmarks. So when this play is ultimately snapped, the Colts five offense alignment are responsible
for the guys in front, and they're sliding to the left because they know the hot is to the
right. So you're going to slide to the left to make sure, hey, that quarterback can have a clean
avenue to attack to the right side if that blitz is coming. And that's exactly what happens.
They slide to the left. The Ravens peel back on the left side and blitz the right, which
gives that free rusher coming in. The quarterback is responsible for that free rusher because you don't
have a tight end chipping. You don't have a running back chipping. And he has to acknowledge that
free rusher is there. Get the ball.
out either around him to the receivers in the spot route or to the running back field,
let that that running back field, let that running back create a couple yards and don't get hit on the
play. What happens with Anthony Richardson is I don't know if he just didn't see the blitz, didn't
account for the blitz coming, thought the slide was coming to the right, or maybe just didn't
know the protection call and thought that the running back was staying in to protect. Because if the
running back staying in to protect there, then that would explain him setting to the left. But he just
kind of inexplicably goes against what everybody else on the play is doing. So again,
the offensive line setting to the left, scat out of the backfield, nobody's chipping.
Everybody's on the same page, but Anthony Richardson's setting to the left, and there's really
no urgency in what he's doing here. He is just sitting in the pocket. He's not expecting
a free rusher, obviously by the way he took that hit, barely held on to the football
there. He's not expecting a free rusher. So there was something off with him and every other
player on the field. And typically for me, that says that that was probably the guy who made the
mistake when the one guy is different from everybody else. So yeah, he's setting to the deeper
developing routes. Again, when you have sim pressure up front and you're doing empty protection,
that's just something you can't be doing as a quarterback. And even if we want to give him the
benefit of a doubt, like say the play design was throw the ball to the left here, like no matter what
throw the ball left. The second you see that that defensive end on that side of the field bailing out
off the line you have your every alarm bell has to be going off in your head if you know the
protection call because if you know the protection call you have to say my running back's not in here
and i see that guy bailing they're going to have a free rusher on me so that's when you at least just
got to eat it and get down uh so i think a lot of this was just the lack of fundamentals was just
him not knowing the protection call or being off on the protection call not setting to the right
hot read on the right side and just not being aware of the free rusher even when he did make the mistake
setting to the left because again you have to at least see that defensive end bailing and know
that that guy's coming so it was just a mess of a play for the cults an absolute mess of the play
we're not in the the quarterback room we're not in there with Shane Steichen so there's you know there's
certainly a percent chance that this could be like the running back and the tight end both made
the mistake here or the offensive lines slid the wrong way but from the way i see it in the way
that jeff schwartz was breaking it down on socials and kurt warner was talking about it on
socials,
Jason McDaniel,
like all these guys
who play in the NFL,
this is kind of
what happened on the play.
The quarterback just
had the wrong protection call,
looked the wrong way,
and didn't even see when,
like,
see the one tell that could have said
like this is a disaster,
didn't even see that.
And he just took an unexpected hit.
And it was a bad,
violent hit.
And he's lucky to get out of it,
which is a dislocated pinky
because that was a square hit
right to his chest.
You know,
he's kind of lucky to get out of it
somewhat unscated.
I guess without a serious injury, but yeah, just a mess of a play that you don't want to see in what his like sixth snap of the preseason.
Like that's a fundamental day one install when you're someone like Shane Seigen who has been doing these empty protections against the Blitz for his entire career.
This is something they've installed probably for three years with Anthony Richardson.
So it's just something you don't want to see from him in year three with the Colts.
Yeah.
So kind of like a worst case scenario, Alan, like a missed worst case scenario he just didn't see it, right?
should be seeing it by now, if it's year three, best case scenario, it's a miscommunication
where really everybody else was in lockstep except for him. So the miscommunication's still
on him. It's hard to find kind of a middle ground that gives him a little bit of an escape here.
Yeah, and the bright side is preseason. So you want to make your mistakes right now in preseason.
You do not want to make that mistake once you get to the regular season. And I can guarantee
if they line up in that formation again and run that play. He's,
going to look at the right side because all you got to do is just get get one time like he got
hit and remember okay I called scat protection and as as a running back I always love scat
protection because it meant I didn't have to block anybody and I was I'm five nine 200 pounds
I don't want to block a big six five 285 pound defensive end so I love scat protection
but the other thing that scat protection involves as a running back when you see that guy rush
in, you immediately turn your head so you have availability to the quarterback because usually
when you run that little swing route on scat protection, you're running like five or ten
yards before you turn your head and look around so you can make a nice little loop so the
quarterback can throw the ball to you. But on scat, you look right away. And actually,
looking at the play, you know, I looked at the tight end to see if maybe he was supposed to block him,
but the tight end made his little fake move, went out, which let me know he wasn't supposed
to block that guy either.
So I will just go on the fact that it happened in preseason.
It shouldn't happen again.
But because it's on film now, every team in the league is going to send that blitz
until the Colts figure out, okay, that guy's not blocked.
I need to get rid of the ball.
Yeah.
And it's just, it's a shame because we now, because.
of that we don't get to see
Anthony Richardson for more than
a series and a half. And it just kind of goes back
to what you said, Zach, this is your three
and it's really important for
Richardson, for everybody, for him,
for the evaluation of him,
for his teammates, for
rapport, for everything that we're talking
about him, for him to be out there on the field
and whether it's bad luck or just
whatever else, which, you know, Charlie Brown
level bad luck for him,
it just keeps happening over and over
and over again, where again, instead of talking about a game,
and talking about his reps and then comparing him the Jones we're leading the show off with another
injury yeah and and the thing is too like we're looking at this and we can kind of use as a segue to
talk a little bit about Daniel Jones here is Daniel Jones is the massive winner of tonight and it's not
really because of anything he did on the field 10 of 21 for 144 yards against second and third
stringers when you're a guy who has been in the NFL as long as he has it's like it's not like
Daniel Jones, like, came in and stole the job or had such a great performance.
He was pretty below average in this game by all accounts.
But he's the big winner tonight just because he played, because he simply was on the field.
And when we're looking at Anthony Richardson at this point, like, aside from the fundamentals
that he's lacking, aside from the underneath stuff that he's been lacking and just the
the down-to-down consistency, he hasn't been able to stay healthy.
like he's missed what 50% of his 57% of his career starts up to this point we're into the preseason here it's like six snaps in and we get another serious injury for or not serious but like another injury from him on a violent hit that just didn't need to happen so it's like at some point it's just who he is like I want this guy to be healthy I want this guy to be able to hit his potential but I mean how many back injuries knee injuries shoulder injuries hand injuries do we need to see before it's like
look this is the NFL it's not for long if if you can't stay healthy you know it's the unfortunate
truth you know this is a business and it has to operate like a business in a lot of ways um so like
you just don't get forever to get healthy it has to happen soon and we're in year three and it's
just more injuries for him i thought jones overall i know you said you know less than
i'm grading him on the daniel jones curve and i thought i thought he was okay
actually. I didn't think
I wasn't wowed. I'm never
wowed by Daniel Jones. So that is
an unfair expectation to have when you're watching Daniel
Jones. You're very rarely going to be wowed.
But I did think that he
delivered the ball well, Alan. I thought he
stood in there and
did a nice job accuracy-wise, which is
I guess what you can kind of come to expect from
Daniel Jones. There were three or four drops at least
that he suffered from. So I don't think
that what was the final line? 10 of 21. I don't
think that necessarily does
justice. But, you know, as
you mentioned, Zach, none of this matters because if the other guy you're competing
against is always going to have issues like this, then I think by default, the team is just
going to say, hey, we have to go with somebody that we're going to end up being able to more
rely on. Not that Daniel Jones has the best injury history ever, but anybody compared to
Anthony Richardson has great injury history. Well, it's incumbent upon Daniel Jones to stay ready
at all times. And I think when he first came in, it kind of shocked him a little bit.
you know, you always want to be ready.
And there's a certain rhythm to a game that you want to be able to mess yourself in.
And the first few snaps, it didn't look like he was ready to be in there where you should have to always be ready.
And I don't know.
It just, to me, it seemed like he was always locked on one guy when he threw the ball.
But, I mean, I look at the stats after the game.
17 different receivers touched the ball.
But it just seemed like with Daniel Jones, it was.
one guy all the time. And so I was hoping that he would have the opportunity to spread the ball
around. But I also know that as a quarterback, if you have that one guy who's always catching your
passes, you're going to hunt that guy up all the time. Do we need to talk about Riley Leonard?
I would just say overall tonight, every quarterback who touched the field in this game did not
have a great showing.
I mean, Daniel Jones might have been the best one, I guess, tonight, because I did like
a couple of his throws.
Like, he had a couple to 80 Mitchell.
I thought were pretty solid throws.
There were a few other ones that, you know, over the middle and down the field,
Ashen Doolin, he connected with a couple times as well.
I had a good connection there.
But, man, every quarterback had a rough one.
The Ravens quarterback's were rough in this one.
Riley Leonard had a good beginning.
The middle and the end wasn't as great for Riley.
Lee Leonard, including the interception and the way the game ended there.
So, yeah, not a great.
I mean, this Colts quarterback room, again, sobering reminder of kind of all the concerns we had coming into the offseason with this quarterback room because that was, that was rough against some backups and third stringers of the Baltimore Ravens.
And look, I know that the first joint practice they had, both quarterbacks looked pretty good, looked decent.
second practice, joint practice, wasn't so well because they did more red zone stuff.
But, you know, coaches, all they can go on is what they see in practice a lot of times.
And they depend on that practice thing.
But the great Herm Edwards made one of the greatest statements I ever heard.
It's not practice is how you play the day you play.
Yep.
He's not wrong about that, for sure.
And we'll circle it back.
I'm sure the quarterbacks will come up again in conversation throughout this show.
I don't want to just spend time on them, obviously,
but we'll also talk about the joint practices
because that's part of this preseason week one.
It's not just about the three hours that we just saw in Baltimore.
It's about, you know, there's a lot to take from those joint practices,
sometimes more than the actual games,
which we'll discuss as well because Zach,
I know that you were able to get there in Baltimore
because it's not too far from where you live.
But fighting for your job in the preseason,
you always want to stand out,
but some guys stood out for maybe the wrong reasons in tonight's game.
We're going to talk about standout performances,
both the good and the bad for the Colts tonight.
next here on the Locked-on Colts Squad Show.

And we're back on the Locked-on Colts Squad Show alongside Zach Hicks, part of the dynamic duo
and Locked on Colts and former Notre Dame and NFL running back Alan Pinkin.
I'm Derek Schultz.
Let's talk about some of the standouts and not so good things.
And I'm not just talking about individuals.
I'm talking about groups because there's one group in particular, Zach, that
that I thought stood out tonight, and that would be the coverage units.
Oh, my gosh.
A big break on, you know, they busted twice, really, a 69-yard kick return to set up one
touchdown, an 87-yard punt return that obviously scored another, and I know Brian Mason
couldn't have been too happy with what he saw tonight.
No, that was some dreadful stuff on kick coverage, on both the kick return coverage
and the punt return coverage.
Honestly, I don't even think, well, okay, the kick return, the coverage lanes were just
awful like that like it was just wide open up the middle i i have to rewatch that on film and just
see what happened there who broke their lane integrity the punt return though that was really just
awful tackling they had three guys right around the guy when he caught it all them missed their
tackling and i think tackling was just a really big concern throughout this entire game uh with the
colts defense as well like a lot of missed tackles a lot of guys just not squaring up and it was just a
a big time struggle for this for these you know third and second third and
14 guys who were trying to make an impact just weren't able to get ball carriers to
the ground to the ground I know I know like Keaton Mitch or Keith I think Keaton
Mitchell that's his name the running back for the Ravens fantastic player awesome
player but I mean he was averaging 10 yards of carry we like if you're running back
shouldn't be averaging 10 yards to carry unless you're Alan Pinkett in like a you know
local charity league or something like that I'm sure he would average 10 yards of
carrying that but but yeah it was just a really brutal showing from the special teams i thought the
kicking was fine should i even dare i say the kicking is fine to go against my own brand here
a 52-yard kick miss is you know it's part of what happens when you're kicking that many field goals in
the first half you can't count on those to always be made and it got there right so yeah yeah that's what
you want i guess that was fine from the special teams but besides that i mean brian mason's going to be
yelling at these guys all day tomorrow and Saturday because that was that was a brutal,
brutal showing from the special teams. Well, you know, from a player perspective, especially if
you're a late round or undrafted or journeyman player, special teams is your way to make the football
team. So, I mean, there has to be an urgency when you're out there on those coverage teams
to, you know, do the fundamental things. Right. Stay in your lane. Don't get blocked.
go make the tackle, or don't clip anybody, don't hold anybody.
And the Ravens, to me, just showed more urgency in that situation.
Now, the returner for the Ravens definitely had some flash.
He had a great individual performance on his part.
But I think against the regular 53 man unit, he gets tackled deep in the back.
You know, he gets tackled deep, but I just, I'm sure that Brian Mason is disappointed and is going to just ask for more urgency out of that unit because if you want to make the football team, special teams is the way because if you go through each position and look at how many people they keep at each position, you know, I've been there.
Running back, it's either five at the most and usually two of those are fullback.
but it's five at the most maybe maybe four you know so if they're going to keep an extra
running back that running back in that fourth or fifth position has to be good on special
teams so it's just I just think there needs to be more urgency it's why Tyro Goodson's a lock for
the roster right yeah yeah he had a couple good moments tonight I just I don't know where he was
on those in particular bad ones but I thought he looked good so yeah like you're saying
and like that those are the guys that need to to for sure like stand out to make the team and like
Alan said like I don't think they had their full special teams guys out there the lot of these guys
are not going to be on teams here but you want to see more effort you want to see just more
pride in getting a guy down than letting them get these big returns on you in a preseason game
we talked about low lights highlights and this is funny going harkening back to our first show
I remember our last segment we did camp crushes and you know Zach Jake and I are all kind of like
deep reaching for like second and third string
guys and Alan just comes out banging the table. Tyler Warren, let's go. Tyler Warren, Alan,
looked like the real deal tonight. Look, I know it's a preseason game and all of that,
but all of those things that you saw at Penn State, I think you saw a little bit in tonight's
game in his NFL debut. Well, and I think he's got the attention of, you know, people around the
country talking about how well he is showing in practice. And I just go back to the fact that
Last year, the tight-in position only accounted for 407 receiving yards.
You know, Tyler Warren, his senior year, triple debt with his production.
So it can only be a good thing that Tyler Warren is there.
And to be able to diversify the offense where he's actually a threat to make the defense,
not just ignore him, but maybe switch up that defense where they have to cover this guy
because he'll be a first down machine if they don't.
So maybe I got lucky picking Tyler Warren,
but I know he was the only guy who could catch passes against Notre Dame
when they played in the playoffs last year.
I actually thought both of the draft picks,
and I know JTT left with a knee injury,
but I thought both of their first two picks really showed out tonight, Zach,
not just Warren, but JTT on the other side as well.
Yeah, I mean, as long as you can stay healthy going forward
because, I mean, we're starting to lose rookies.
and right on this Colts team right now.
Hopefully his injury isn't as serious as Justin Wally's was that we just were informed
about.
But yeah, JCT, I thought, had a pretty good game.
He played a little bit later than what I would have liked.
He was, like, out there, like, late in the third quarter, you know, for a second round
pick who's going to play a decent amount this year.
I was a little concerned seeing him out that long because I thought he had shown enough
early in the game.
But, yeah, I thought he showed some really good things early.
His run defense was one of the few bright spots in the ground game, I thought,
compared to how a lot of that second unit was fitting against the run.
he did some good things like disengaging from blocks keeping that outside leverage and then he was
able to finish with a sack in there as well so yeah i mean if we're looking for the young guys that
really flashed j t t tyler warren they really proved that they were worth where they were drafted
by the colts this past off season anybody else that jumped out to either one of you uh tonight as far
as a standout in a positive way performer would go yeah i would mention you know i remember you
talking about, you know, Bacchi and how great a cat he was having. And, you know, how fitting was
it for him to have that interception in the red zone, which you would hope that your defense
wouldn't give up, you know, because a lot of times the team will have momentum and get a drive
going. And that momentum thing is a hard thing to stop. But, you know, kudos to Bachi for making
had a great play to, you know, prevent them from scoring.
And, you know, that comes from having success in practice and having that confidence to know
that I'm going to set this guy up so that when he throws the ball, he's going to go get it.
But I would just say Abachi was a pleasant, pleasant surprise.
Yeah, and let me keep on the defense side of the ball with another guy who got an interception.
Alex Johnson, I thought, was the play in the game for the Colts.
And he might have to have a much bigger role than what we were expecting.
with Jalen Jones with a serious hamstring injury,
Justin Wally with a torn ACL,
and Juju Brent's dealing with even more injuries right now
in his hamstring.
Alex Johnson might be quarterback three or four
by the time the season rolls around,
but at least he looked like that tonight.
He looked too good to be on the field tonight,
which was evident by his pretty short stint in this game.
I think he was out of the game by the end of the first quarter.
For a guy who's kind of been a journeyman at this point,
that's a pretty good showing for him,
came out there with a big moment early in the game,
I think he was a second play of the game, had that one-handed interception.
Even when the receiver was dragging him down, you don't get OPI called very often on jump balls.
But that shows how much he just won that rep.
And then later in the game on a third down, they tried to test him with an out route to his side,
made an excellent pass breakup and knocked that ball away.
And then I think he was done after that because of how good his showing was.
So with the Colts cornerback room kind of being decimated by injury right now,
they needed a guy to step up.
And Alex Johnson, I think, made a really strong case.
in this one to be part of the roster. He already has that connection with Jerome Henderson,
the safety or the defensive backs coach for the Colts. So there's that familiarity with the coach
bringing him over here. And now it's making plays in preseason. He's working his way at the depth
chart. I think this is exactly what he needed to make a case to make the team. And this is a great
first step for him. Yeah, it helped too because I think Jonathan Edwards had a penalty and had some
struggles. And we were kind of talking about them for that last cornerback spot. And, you know,
if they're going to take the precedes into account, which of course they have to, it's the
entire body of work point in Alex Johnson's direction for tonight, for sure. Yeah, no, for sure.
I thought it was a really, really good showing from him. I'm trying to think of other Atatomi
while Atabore looked unblockable out there. I know, again, backup offensive lineman, and he's this guy
who was a former fourth round pick, super athletic, and every time we see him in the preseason
setting, he is just a fantastic pass rusher. I do want to just see him get more time in the regular
season because anytime we see him out here in these moments, I mean, he had the insane.
bull rush for a sack in the first quarter where he just ran over the right
guard on that play had a couple other pressures later in the game too I mean I
I really think he's got some legit pass rushing juice let's get this guy on the
field in the regular season like I want to see him against legit starters because
every time we see him against backup offensive lineman he is just dominating
let's get him out there in the regular season a little bit the other thing I
would say is I think all the running backs I could name them but I think as a group
the running backs actually ran the ball pretty well and also caught it well when they had a chance
to catch it. But I think the running backs acquitted themselves well. And, you know, what, we didn't
see Jonathan Taylor at all. So I think you want to have depth of that position. And it looks like
there's going to be a fight for who's going to come in second, who's going to come in third.
But most of those guys look good. Something else that I noticed, I guess,
on the, you know, we're talking about the good side of the coin and the bad side of the coin.
And Zach, maybe this is for after, you know, you and Jake talk later this week and look at the film and all of that.
It felt like the tackle play was pretty leaky at times tonight.
And I wasn't necessarily identifying, okay, that was, you know, so and so, that was so and so.
But it felt that way from watching it in a lot of time.
Did you see that as well?
Yeah, the left tackle play in particular was pretty leaky.
Blake Freeling gave up the edge quite a bit in the past.
in the past blocking department.
Now, he did a good job of at least getting his body in between the rusher and the
quarterback to shield off some of that outside pressure.
But again, when you're these quarterbacks like Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones,
for most of camp, you've been working with the ones.
You know, you're used to the depth that Braden Smith and Berenhardt Ryman are playing with.
Now you're getting out there with these second team offensive tackles,
and maybe they give up a little bit harder of an edge on the outside
because they're not the same level of athletes.
You're not used to that with your full step drop.
And so you're getting back to your depth that you would have with Brayden Smith and Barenhard Riemann, and that's a lot tighter space for you than what it would be with Jalen Travis and Blake Freeland, who are getting beat to the edge a little bit quicker.
So it had to be a bit of an adjustment.
We certainly saw, like Daniel Jones, I think, had one where he had like a five-step drop and the rushers like just collapsed in on him.
Maybe he adjust that drop a little bit more if he like had a different tackle set out there, you know, like different guys that he trusted out there.
But yeah, I thought the left tackle play was a little bit more leaky than the right tackle play.
But overall, the Ravens, the way that they coach their pass rush and the way they attack as a front is so difficult when you are in your first preseason game because it's so much on communication and being right in your slides and being correct in your communication between the quarterback and the offensive line.
So any minor mistake, they're going to get a free rusher and kill your quarterback.
And we saw that tonight on a couple occasions.
Yeah, we did, unfortunately.
If you're just joining us, we did talk
in the first segment about obviously the
Anthony Richardson injury and the play
that led to that injury. But talking
more about the game, which we're going to do so here on the
Colts squad show. These preseason games,
they may not matter for guys like DeForest Buckner
and Jonathan Taylor. There's a reason they didn't play tonight.
But they definitely matter for Jolani Woods.
And for the guy that we just talked about, Alex Johnson,
we're going to tell you which cut line guys
helped or hurt themselves next
when the show continues.

football now at yahoo fantasy.com slash locked on NFL and we're back on the Colts squad
show alongside Zach Hicks from Locked on Colts and former NFLer and her name legend
Alan Pinkett. I'm Derek Schultz. Let's talk about the cut line guys. We just mentioned Alex
Johnson and Jonathan Edwards and kind of that cornerback depth group and now with the news
about Justin Wally, man, you know, a week ago if the Colts call you and say, hey, we want you to come
to camp to be one of our cornerbacks probably thinking, man, I got no chance. And now you're
thinking, hell, I've got a pretty good chance maybe now to sneak on this roster. But
the other one that I was really focused on, Zach, was the fourth tight end with Will Mallory
and Jolani Woods. First off, let me just say this. It's great to see Jolani Woods out there.
You know, a guy hasn't played in two years. And he's such a big and athletic dude. It's great
to see him back there on the football field. But what did you think about how he produced tonight?
Yeah, I think he had a pretty solid showing. I mean, the one.
one-handed catch on a pretty errant ball by Riley Leonard that the Ravens even challenged.
They couldn't get it overturned late in the game.
I thought that was a really good snag by him.
I thought some of the run blocking looked pretty good by him too.
I think just my concern with it is how late in the game he was out there.
And I know that you're trying to get the reps out there for him because he just hasn't had any
reps the last two years.
But a lot of these things, it's pecking order.
You know, if you're out there that late in the game where, you know, you are
when you're out there with Riley Leonard and Coleman Owen
and all those other guys
it's not looking good for your roster chances
you know like the later in a preseason game that you're out there
it's tough and you know with Jolani
I was kind of watching it thinking like
Will Mallory hasn't been in the game in over a quarter at this point
and that's probably his competition for tight end four
I don't envision this team keeping five tight ends
unless we're putting like 10 other guys on IR which might happen at this
pace with all the injuries that we're getting
with this team. But yeah,
I don't envision them keeping five tight ends. So
I can say to anywhere and say, like, this was a good showing
from Jolani Woods. I thought it was a really good showing from him
and I liked what I saw, but
I don't know if it's enough with how
late he was in the game there because they
didn't, like, they didn't
even consider taking him out late in the game
and he was out there with, again,
Coleman Owen, Ajo, Ajo,
Landon Parker, like, these are
guys who are like fighting to be a practice squad guy
at best. And Jelani Woods, a former third round pick, was running alongside them out there.
So, yeah, we'll see. I hope he can, you know, keep stacking good performances like he did,
because he did everything he could in this game to make a case to make the team. But, yeah,
that was not the most promising thing seeing him out there with like a minute left in the fourth quarter.
Did you hear that, if you see somebody out there with Riley Leonard, then that means bad news.
That means that you're not making the team. Did you hear one's accent that?
oh wait i think hold on let me unmute yeah you got to unmute that's all that's all me that's
all me that's a chance special to you right there sorry about it is hey well i'm drinking coffee at 11 p.m.
if that tells you anything uh but no like when i saw calil herbert out there like riding it out in
the second half i was like that kind of hammered home exactly what we've been thinking uh so
yeah jolani was i don't think that's a great sign that he was out there so late and to zack's point
will mallory who is juliani woods like direct competition it felt like he barely played past
when the other starters that actually were out there played so yeah probably you know maybe
they could sneak him on the practice squad at this point maybe that's like the the optimal route
but yeah they're they're definitely not keeping like five tight ends including him so
we'll we'll see how it goes i mean there's still a couple games but
Man, I'm very interested to see what positives you guys might have taken away from this one.
We talked about Alex Johnson already, Jake.
Don't worry.
I already talked all about Alex Johnson.
Yo, what a snag.
Right into the crook of the arm like he knows what to do with it.
Let's go, Alex Johnson.
Oh, yeah.
And going back to the tight ends, the one-handed grab that Jolani Woods made was really impressive.
And regardless of what quarter you play in,
or, you know, what portion of the game or how many reps you get, you've got to remember.
You're not just trying to make the cults.
You're auditioning for all the teams because everybody watches film.
And, you know, you just, if you continue to make splash plays like that,
then there's a good chance you'll have a job.
And practice squad isn't so bad because, you know, somebody's going to get hurt and you're going to have a chance to play.
And a lot of times I try to pay attention to the preseason games because I don't know anybody
who's playing, but these are names I'm going to need to know come December and January.
Talking about some other position battles as well.
And Jake, you and Zach talked about this one on Locked on Colts earlier this week,
but the battle for the back end of the linebacker depth with Austin Ajake and Saguna Luby.
What did you see there tonight as well from some of those other?
the guys who might be on the cut line yikes yeah i mean if we're if we're looking beyond like botchy and
mcgrone and you know i thought a jockey did some nice things but in general uh i don't i don't
know what we're going to do against the run boys i don't it's rough i do not know it was my
concern going in and it pretty much manifested right we'll have grover stewart for the regular season
it's fine it's perfectly fine you know he's not going to get hurt
he's not going to get suspended everything's fine he's going to play all 17 games everything's
going to be great yeah but no the back of linebackers some of the run fits were a little
concerning out there um also jockey cam mcgrone uh i think job bachi was fine in the couple snaps he
he didn't have many snaps he just had an interception and one of the few snaps he had out there
i did see him get sealed off on the edge on one of the bigger runs on it's like that's what
i was hoping wouldn't happen yeah yeah so uh yeah the run defense might be a little if he this
year. But hey, Zyre Franklin was out. Forrest Buccner is out. Grover Stewart's out.
Like, we can't, we can't make grand statements based on seeing Shagoo Alubi and Cam McGrone and all
these guys starting games in the preseason because things can drastically change when you have
your all pros and your pole caliber guys back out there. But it wasn't what you wanted to see from
some of these guys who are probably going to make the team. And even guys like, you know,
McGroen and Batchie could be starters this season. We have no clue. You wanted to see a little bit
more from those guys.
And the thing that sticks out to me is that 177 yards rushing, you know, that's a little bit of a red flag.
I'm sure that's something that the host's new defensive coordinator is going to have in mind when he goes back to the film room to figure out what is it we need to do.
You talk about the fits, Zach, and yes, that that is so important that the linebackers take the right route to the football.
and don't let people cross their face.
So a lot of work to be done.
But the flip side is, it's preseason.
If you want to make your mistakes, make them now.
Yeah.
And I think, guys, we knew that linebacker was going to be a bit of a learning curve, right?
Because, you know, Cameron McGrone, indie kid, right?
He's never started an NFL game.
And some of these other guys that are being pushed into prominent roles,
it kind of felt like the one position group, you know,
Chris Bauer always sort of has that blind spot or that group that he's like,
yeah, we're just going to, we like our guys, we're going to roll with who we have.
And it felt like linebacker was that one for this year, for this off season,
where there were no real upgrades.
Instead, you lost a couple of guys.
So, you know, we'll see.
But I have a feeling that we're going to be talking about the linebacker group,
a decent amount, hopefully not too much of a decent amount on this show.
Definitely not me.
I have not brought it up once.
It's been your whole off season, Jake.
Other takeaways from tonight, we're going to talk about that next.
And what did we learn from the Colts first week?
Not just tonight, but the first week of hitting a different team instead of just hitting other Colts.
That's next on the Colts Squad Show here on the Lockdown Network.
And we're back on Locked on Colts, the Locked On Squad Show, Colts Squad Show.
Colt Squad Show. I'll eventually get this title, right? We've got Zach Hicks, we've got Alan Pinkett, we've got our pal. Jake Arthur, who's actually there in Baltimore enjoying his 11 p.m. coffee as we speak to talk about kind of game one takeaways. But Jake, I actually wanted to start with you, because you were the late arrival to show. I know you had to go to the locker room and get audio and do your actual due diligence tonight for writing and all of that. But did you have a major takeaway from tonight? Because when, you know, Zach Allen and I kind of discussed it,
in the opener, it has to be the Richardson injury and whether it's bad luck, whether it's
fluke, whether it's Charlie Brown, you know, God hates the Colts, whatever it is. It just feels
like it's constantly what we're talking about. Instead of evaluating football things,
we're instead talking about, hey, it's, it's Anthony Rich. And I know it's a pinky and it's
probably not very serious at all, but it's still something else that takes up time and takes
up oxygen in the Colts conversation. It is. And it was a flute thing. And like that
would have happened to anyone who got, you know, their hand penned on or
against the defender. Again, it would have happened to anyone. But at a certain point,
like, freak injuries and any sort of injuries just keep happening to the guy. And it's a
pattern. Luckily, it doesn't seem like this one is really going to affect him much. Like,
he may literally even be back on Saturday. No one seems concerned. We talk to him after he's
like, I'm all good, whatever. But yeah, it's, it's hard to
to garner peace with him being your quarterback at this point.
You know what I mean?
Because you are always waiting on the other shoe to drop.
Because we've gone all throughout camp without problems.
You know, the shoulder didn't flare up or anything.
And we're like, you know what?
This is kind of encouraging.
He's been healthy.
He's showing growth.
This and that.
And then boom, second drive of the game gets smoked.
And I mean, it's something that he admitted himself, you know,
is a five-man protection.
And he should have been paying more.
attention and noticed it and he didn't and it's just like those kind of things can happen because
that's the hardest hit he is taken in the NFL today of course he got hurt doing that and
I don't want to point fingers and say it's his fault but like he himself said he has to be
better and recognize and stuff like that so yeah it's I this is not throwing in a towel on him
whatsoever I still think it would be optimal for him to win the job if he you know gets back quickly
and continue showing a lot of the progress
that he's been showing all summer.
But yeah, it does just get frustrating
that it's one thing after another
and you just can't have peace for longer
than like a few weeks
when it comes to this quarterback situation.
Alan, I know you weren't a quarterback when you played,
but I'm sure as a running back,
I'm sure every NFL player goes through dislocated fingers.
I don't know if you specifically had a dislocated pinky,
but what is it like playing through
dislocations and in your hands like that?
Well, if you have to throw the ball, it's a problem.
But catching a football or just holding onto a football,
you really have to have more focus because I have,
I've dislocated both pinkies, you know, one time in a game.
And it's like, I am not coming out of this game.
So you just got to tape it up and, you know,
maybe take a couple more ad bill or whatever they have on.
the sidelines and just be aware of it and try and protect it and understand that you're going
to have a little bit of pain, but it just doesn't seem right that a little finger should
take me out of a game. So you just try to gut it out. And that's with all the little injuries.
You get a lot of nicks and bruises and stuff during the game that you just have to ignore them
until you get in the shower
and they all reared their ugly head again.
So you just play through them.
When I did, I remember one time
I did Pinky in practice and I looked at it
and the strangest part is always looking at it
and seeing it face a direction.
It shouldn't be facing, you know.
And you almost flip out,
but I had the trainer come over just in time
to just take my hand, fold it over,
and everything was fine after that.
But that's, what do you call it,
occupational hazard,
that your fingers are going to get busted up
when you're playing a game,
which is why I think I'm in favor of guys wearing gloves.
You know, the gloves may not stop it from bending a certain way,
but it's still as a little layer or protection.
Zach, quarterback-wise, I always heard,
you don't want it to be index finger
and you definitely don't want it to be thumb.
But as long as it's not those two,
Am I right in saying that?
As long as it's not those two, you could be okay.
And Pinky would be, you know, no surprise to even the people at home.
Obviously, if you're going to dislocate something, you'd want it to be your pinky.
Yeah, I mean, ideally you don't want it to be any of the fingers.
I think that's, that's the, look, it's almost midnight, guys.
I got a big bad joke.
But, yeah, it's, I mean, yeah, I think the thumb is obviously the worst one because of how much grip comes
into play there.
And then obviously the index finger as well, because that's going to be the one that's
getting the back end of the quarterback there.
But, yeah, I think if this were a regular season game, he probably,
would have been back out there by the second half at the latest.
I think on the sideline, he was already working on his grip, and they were already getting
that thing ready to go.
So it's a preseason game.
If you have your quarterback dislocating his finger, the last thing you want to do is
throw him back out there and leave anything up to chance in a preseason game, especially
too, when it comes to dislocations, the worst pain that you're going to feel is immediately
after they pop it back in.
That is the most painful part.
I've dislocated half these fingers playing basketball growing up.
And the second they put it back in is the most painful thing.
So, you know, you don't want to throw a guy back out there in a meaningless,
I mean, meaningful but meaningless preseason game with some pain on his hand,
with him trying to get the grip back.
So, yeah, it's tough to throw him back out there.
But I think of this where a regular season game,
you probably get him back out there by the second half.
Let's talk about some of what you guys were able to see before tonight in Baltimore,
including a big standout performance from A.D. Mitchell,
kind of a quiet game for the most part tonight.
I mean, he was fine.
I think he ended up with two catches.
He had a 20-plus yarder at one point in that game.
But literally, and I know I'm making analogy for a different sport,
but he was dunking on people, I hear, in Baltimore,
you know, just kind of dominating and taking over things a couple of days ago.
Yeah, absolutely.
And he's never been one lacking confidence.
But I think guys reach a different level of confidence
when what they're doing is actually working and he was on one on Tuesday like he was kind of like he
recognized us his faces in the crowd and was calling the defenders he was burned or uh beaten burnt
toast and everything he he kept making commentary to us after he would destroy each one of these
defenders and one on once uh so he was definitely on one and uh no every level of the field and just
you could tell the comfort level with him um it did look there was once or twice tonight where i thought
a little apprehensive. There was the little slant route where he didn't want to reach out
for it. But at the same time, I thought he was really close to making some plays. Like Daniel
Jones getting kind of four down on when he was uncorking that one deep down the right side,
I thought that had the potential to be a really, really big play if the ball just could have
got a little further. But now, it wasn't the most productive performance tonight, but I didn't
feel like it did last year. Last year, you're just throwing.
your hands up you're like what's this guy doing like when is this going to click and i just didn't
feel that way tonight like some nights it just doesn't go your way um but like i saw enough on
tuesday to be pretty confident and i didn't i just didn't feel like he was having the same issues
tonight that plagued him like all last year how would you say the week went in general out there
as far as you know the colts holding their own against baltimore and and how they performed and
kind of, I guess, adding up what you saw in person at the joint practices with what you saw
in the actual game tonight and kind of given an overall grade.
Yeah, one thing I will say, and I know it's hard to live this in the moment right now, guys,
because we just saw not a great game from this Colts team.
Their past defense looked pretty good, but everything else with the Colts didn't look
very good in this game.
But one thing I will say to keep in mind is when we saw the starters out there against the Ravens
starters in these joint practices, which coaches on both sides would agree that they hold a lot
of value in these joint practice sessions because they are testing a lot of things, and it is a
competitive environment, and they're able to test like certain situational football, red zone,
neutral and backed up two-minute drills.
I think the cold starters played exceptionally well in those.
Like, I'm not saying that they were killing the Baltimore Ravens.
Baltimore Ravens are an absolutely great team, but I think they held their own in a lot of ways,
especially the cold starting defense, even with Zaire Franklin out of there.
So, yeah, I think, you know, Tervarius Ward, Nick Cross, Cam Bynum, DeForest Buckner, Grover, Stewart.
This defense is a lot different when you have those guys on the field compared to what we saw tonight.
And even on the offense, you know, Jake was watching more of the offense.
And there was a lot of good that he was seeing on that side of the ball, too, with the full range of starters out there.
So I think those joint practice sessions were very competitive, very good, matched football.
I thought the Colts defense won the day against the Ravens offense, and I think Jake even said the
Colts offense probably got a little slightly ahead in those practices as well, especially the first team
offense. So overall, I think if we put all this week in the context, I feel pretty good about the
Colts starters. The quarterback situation is still very concerning. Don't get me wrong. But when we're
looking at the cold starters on offense and defense, as long as they can avoid the injuries, the
cornerback room is starting to get a little dicey right now. But as long as they can avoid the injuries,
I like their starters on both sides.
It's just maybe tonight showed a little bit of the depth issues,
the depth concerns and some special teams concerns
that hopefully don't carry over into the regular season.
But I think overall this is a fine week.
It's just hard to contextualize that right now
based off what we just saw in a preseason game
because it's always like the latest thing you saw
is like the hardest thing to get out of your head.
And tonight wasn't a great football game from the Colts.
But overall, I think it was a perfectly fine week for the Colts.
very competitive joint practice and, you know, some of the depth guys like Alex Johnson and stuff
really stepped up in this game.
Well, the one thing I'll say without having the benefit of seeing the joint practice,
but relying on your commentary for how it went in practice and how good you felt after the
first day of joint practice.
And then looking at what happened tonight is that the Ravens know the difference between
practice speed and game speed.
You know, and so, you know, you can elevate in practice, but you want to duplicate what you're doing practice on the field for game day.
And I just, the Ravens, you know, that has a pedigree of winning, understand what you need to do to step up on game day.
On practice, we're going to experiment.
We're going to do a couple things.
Yeah, we want to practice hard.
Yeah, we want to do things, you know, to make us look good.
But when that game comes, that's when we're really going to step on the gas.
And that's what it feels like for me is that, you know, I expected a lot more tonight after hearing what good of practice the polls had on the first joint practice.
But, you know, the Ravens have that championship pedigree, and it matriculates down throughout the roster.
and they were able to just present it tonight.
But culture close.
Yeah, and maybe guys, you know, I'm getting philosophical here.
Maybe we needed tonight to just kind of get everybody to pump the brakes a little.
It's just natural, right?
Like you see A.D. Mitchell show out and you're like, wow.
And you see Anthony Richardson at the night practice and you're like, wow.
And then you see it in the game.
And then you're just kind of like, okay, like I got to chill, maybe.
I got to kind of pull myself.
Now, I didn't want to get as pulled back as I was watching tonight because I felt like I got really pulled back.
But again, you know, the good and the bad, you just have to take it somewhat with a grain of salt.
We're just projecting here.
We're just like everybody else.
I mean, you know, we're trying to kind of figure out what this team is going to look like.
And it's just difficult when they're in Westfield compared to when they're in game situations.
When as you, you know, Jake and Zach, you guys have said it over and over again on locked on Colts.
when the bolts are flying when the bolts are flying and here tonight the bolts were flying
and then they're really flying in a month yeah and we have to keep in mind too this is just one more
data point in everything the off season it's not the make or break you know we're not saying
that like because anthony richardson missed his hot read and empty protection means all of a sudden
that all the goodwill that he built up this off season is is crashing and burning but it was
it was a little bit of a step back for him but now he's got this whole next week as long as he's
able to go. He's got this whole next week to build it back up and get ready for the Packers.
And same with Daniel Jones. You know, again, he's had a pretty solid camp, had a game tonight
where he probably could have been a little bit better, a little bit more like that veteran
quarterback out there with the second and third team. But now he's got a whole week to build
that up and get ready for the Packers. So, you know, just one step, slight step back and one
data point in the off season doesn't mean it's all over. Like, oh my gosh, all the hype. A.D.
Mitchell's not going to be good. Anthony Richardson's awful again. And Daniel Jones can't hit a pass.
I think that we have, you know, we have more data points coming with these guys.
So they really do need to just keep, keep it going, keep chugging along, bounce back from the stuff.
And I think they could be fine.
We have about three and a half minutes here.
So I thought we'd finish by talking about how did you feel, Zach, about how Spencer Schrader struck the ball tonight and his late speed?
What did you think, analysis-wise, on the kicking battle?
Because that was the biggest thing I know that we were all focused on.
You know, I'm not a big box score scout, but when it comes to kicking, box score scout
all day long with that.
So three of four, with your one miss being 52, you made another one over 50.
I'll live with that.
I don't want to see him on the field as much going forward, maybe for extra points.
But yeah, I'll take it.
I'll take it.
I think he's going to be the kicker this year.
I think that battle is going to be pretty solidified.
Did they say anything after the game, Jake, about like the kicker battle?
I'm sure you guys had other stuff to talk about, I guess.
Yeah, no, I mean, we had bigger fish to fry, you know, between.
the destruction of the quarterbacks in the cornerback room.
And, yeah, kicker was a little bit of an afterthought.
But we'll, you know, Brian Mason, I'm sure we'll be furious when we speak to him next time.
So we'll get our kicker questions in then.
I will say he's got a big leg, Schrader does.
And in today's NFL and Alan, you know, the difference between your era, like teams go for it so much.
I guess I'd just rather have the guy that can boom the ball than worried about the guy that's always accurate from like 42 yards.
And not only that, it is such a weapon when you have a great kicker to know that if we cross the 50, we're getting points.
So it's definitely a weapon to have in this offensive league where you have to continue to put points on the board.
So you've got to have a good kicker, have to have a good kicker.
Well, guys, we'll see what happens from here.
The good news is the Colts have a long layoff.
because their next game won't be until Saturday,
and that'll be here in Indianapolis at Lucas Lowell Stadium
when they take on the Packers.
That'll be on August 16th,
and we'll see what happens with Anthony Richardson
and his availability for that game.
And obviously, Jake and Zach have you every day
or is covered on locked on Colts
with all the day-to-day news when it comes to the team.
And Alan and I will rejoin the group coming up on Wednesday night.
That's usually going to be our cadence for the Colts Squad show.
We think kind of going into the season,
we're still kind of feeling things out,
but Wednesday night and then a Sunday recap show,
I understand that the game is Saturday.
But we want you guys to know after each and every Colts game,
even the games that don't count, like tonight,
we're going to be here for you with a live reaction show,
breaking things down and talking everything Colts here on the Locked-on Colts squad show.
So really looking forward to what's going to be,
I think, a really fun and informative season.
I'm going to try to make it glass-off full before we go here, guys,
after a not-so-great preseason performance.
But again, Zach, to your point, it's just one data point.
We'll see what happens when the season starts.
And considering the magnitude of the hit that Anthony Richardson took,
I'll take a glass-half-full approach and say pretty darn lucky
if it's just a dislocated pinky instead of like a broken sternum
because that's what it felt like in lifetime when I saw him take that hit.
Oh, yeah.
It was pretty rough.
It was pretty rough.
Jake and Zach, we'll be back soon for you every day.
It was on Locked on Colts.
Out and I return with the squad show coming up here on Wednesday night.
but thanks so much for tuning us in and watching again another edition of the locked on colts squad
show don't forget to of course follow at locked on colts and we'll see you next time right here
on the squad show
