I'm joined by Nourname Legend and former NFL running back Alan Pinkett.
And you every day are, of course, those Zach Hicks and Jake Arthur, the wildly popular
locked on Colts duo.
Colts didn't play today, but we still have just enough to talk about during a busy week
for the most part, for the buy for Indianapolis.
Tonight on the show, we're going to take the temperature of where the
Colts sit, sort of a temperature check, heading into the home stretch of the season, because I think
when you look at this closing schedule, it has changed a bit on how we viewed it. And also,
obviously, the Colts have changed how we viewed them, certainly compared to week one to now,
but even riding some of the ebbs and flows of this season. So we'll talk about all of it in the
first segment. Second segment, we'll touch on the potential impact of a prolonged absence for
defensive linchpin DeForest Buckner. You heard about the stem cell treatment this week overseas.
And obviously that probably raised some red flags for people, even
vote is 2025 and these guys are exploring everything that they can do to get their bodies right,
but we'll talk about losing Buck and not having him for at least the next couple of weeks
and what that does to the Colts defense. We'll go over the week 11 results.
No bleno as far as the Colts are concerned. You know, control their own destiny and all that,
but we were talking about it off the air, guys, and pretty much every one of these games
went against the way that you would want them to go as a Colts fan, including the one that just
went final, the Chiefs and Broncos in Denver. And finally, even though he says he played
a hundred years ago, Alan is going to give you his still very much relevant advice
on how to handle the by week from the former player perspective and we'll wrap the show
with that today. But guys, you know, it's funny because in recent years, the by week was
kind of a blessing just to give us a break from the collective angst that the Colts were causing
everybody, right? But honestly, Zach, I was kind of bummed to not have Colts football this week,
which I guess is a compliment to how the season has gone at this point. Yeah, no, for sure. I
I completely agree with you.
You know, the weekends weren't as upsetting this year.
They haven't been as upsetting this year.
They have been in years past.
And we say that, obviously, from the locked on Colts perspective of Jake and I's first year with the network being in 2022, just a dreadful, dreadful season for us.
But, yeah, no, the Colts have been a fun team to watch this year.
And honestly, I felt like the two weeks heading into the by where the Colts roughest two weeks just operationally, you know.
And to get through that one-in-one, I think is pretty important for the Colch, you know, ride some momentum into the by week.
And I think a lot of people were kind of sitting here like, okay, Colts are playing a little bit of sloppy football going into the buy, a chance to reset.
And I was watching games this weekend.
And I realized that I think a lot of teams just play sloppy football halfway through the year.
I think that's just a part of the NFL because there was not a single team I was watching today that didn't look sloppy.
That didn't look just all over the place.
It didn't have mistakes.
The amount of drops I saw from wide receivers today was insane.
I woke up early and I watched the Commanders game overseas
and it was one of the ugliest football games I've ever seen this morning.
A horrible thing that we gave Spain this morning with that product we gave them.
And then you look at even like the best teams in league,
the Seattle Seahawks, Sam Darnold,
through four interceptions against the Rams.
Matthew Stafford, the MVP favorite Matthew Stafford
completed less than 50% of his passes in that game.
It was supposed to be an offensive shooting.
out between the two MVP guys was a really sloppy game that came down to turnovers and field
position at the end of the day. I think a lot of teams just hit this lull halfway through the year
and the Colts are very, very lucky to get their buy week in the middle of that for guys to get
healthy, guys to get refreshed, coaches to go back over the film and and figure out ways to get out
of this. So to me, I think the most beneficial time to get a buy is kind of around this like
week 10, week 11, week 12 time because you can just get through that first stretch of the year,
figure out your identity, figure out who you are. And then as you hit that lull, you can kind of reset a little bit.
You can kind of rest and get back to what you're doing. So I think for a lot of like the panic buttons that we were hitting prior to the bye week, I think it's kind of easy to see this weekend. If you're watching football today, it's like, you know what? I think a lot of teams are hitting kind of that panic button right now just in terms of like the lulls. It's about how you respond going forward and how you reset. The Colts did drop two seating points this weekend. They went from the one seed to the three seed.
But at the end of the day, they control their own destiny with how they played.
And I think they're going to be right in the thick of this thing.
So I'm feeling really confident about this team, especially watching all the teams around the league.
I'm like, I don't see this like, you know, one of one contender, all time great team.
I don't see any of that this year.
I think it's wide open and I think the Colts are in the thick of it.
Yeah, parity is prevalent in the NFL right now.
There is not one team in either conference.
Seahawks don't, you know, they don't look like that.
the Rams don't look like that. Neither side has a team that just looks like the obvious
Super Bowl. So that's good. I mean, the Colts, the Colts have been a team the last several
weeks where, you know, we're not used to this, but I stopped worrying about what other teams
are doing a while ago when it comes to the Colts, because the Colts can be anybody, especially
this year with the way the league looks like we just talked about there. There's just no teams that
I care drastically about that I'm really worried about that said, oh, God, you know, the Colts will be
fine unless they run into this team. So, yeah, getting healthy. You know, you hope Mooney Ward
comes back after this next week. Hopefully, you know, DeForest Buckner going overseas to get his
treatment works well for him, worked well with the ankle, you know, last year. So yeah, just them
getting healthy and then correcting the correctibles because their biggest issues are pretty
self-inflicted.
I mean, now other teams blitzing the hell out of them and getting home, like, that's
problematic, obviously.
That's stuff they need to, I don't think you could just automatically stop it, but I think
there's ways to adjust to it and counter it a little better than what they've done.
And then the turnovers, obviously, that's very correctable.
So getting healthy and just correcting what you can correct, it's coming at a very good time.
Zach and I also discussed, you know, on our Friday show, you'd much rather face the Chiefs coming off a win rather than having their backs against the wall.
But I think this is just an enormous barometer game.
Like, will that even matter?
Will the Colts come to play?
And it doesn't even matter what the Chiefs do.
Like, the Colts are prepared in there and ready to punch.
another team in the mouth. That is probably going to be favored in the game.
You know, who knows. But I'm really eager to see how the Colts approach and respond to this one.
Well, Zach, you speak of a lull. And that is something very real. It happens to every team.
It happens because life in the NFL gets monotonous. You know, you're following the same routine,
week in, week out. If you win, it's more pleasant. If you lose,
it starts to feel like a job.
But either way, it still feels like a job.
And so you need that break so that you can come out of that lull.
And that lull comes from not being hyper-focused.
And it's hard to be hyper-focused.
Even though you're getting paid a lot of money, you know.
It's hard to be hyper-focused in week 10 when you've been doing the same damn thing
in practice every week.
you know so how do you come out of it you come out of it when now you have a vision of where you are
and what you have to do to get to where you have to be and fortunately the cults have put themselves
in that position by being able to control their own destiny to you know be able to withstand the lull
because they did have a lull but I've seen a lot of teams have lulls and it's expected
But now they've put themselves in prime position to be able to accomplish the things that they set out to accomplish early in the year.
So I expect him to come out, you know, very spirited, very focused.
And as far as all the games breaking against the cults, it's never going to be easy.
So you don't even expect it to be easy.
You expect that you're going to have to do it the hard way.
Because if it was easy to be eight and two, there'd be a lot more eight and two teams.
So, but like I said, they did the work early in the year.
They did have, they are going to have a little setback with DeForest Buckner not in there.
But what players do is they just rally around that and just say, you know,
everybody else on defense says, okay, I got to.
to make up for a debug not being in here.
So I've got to step up my game.
And collectively, the entire team will do that because now they can see what the prize is.
Do it with the hard way is right, too, Alan.
I mean, I think we know just from Colts luck history that I almost even went to with our
friends at Fanduil and just put a parlay on all the games that could go against the Colts
because I was that certain that the results would just go that way during the byway
because that's just the Colts luck here.
But you're right that it does feel like, you know, you have to remind yourself, I keep having to do this,
that how good the Colts have been and where they sit right now and the division lead and everything that is advantageous right now.
Because there's a lot more advantageous things than disadvantaged things, right, with where we sit kind of coming out of the biweek.
So, yeah, the chiefs will be angry, but the flip side of that is they're five and five and ready for a kill shot, right?
I mean, if we're looking at it from an optimistic point of view, I mean, yeah, the offense has taken a little bit of a step back, but the offense was at a historic pace.
They were the most efficient this century through eight games. So, of course, they were going to take a step back.
So I think a lot of the things that you see so far here, Zach, is that, you know, you can argue it one way and be doom and gloom if you want to.
And certainly there are segments of the fan base that want to just do that all the time and take that sort of look at things.
But you can also look at a glass of full and flip everything into a positive where the Colts
it right now because they put themselves in such a great spot.
Yeah, I like to view myself at least as a pretty even keeled analyst or whatever that covers
the Colts. Now, don't get me wrong, I have my emotional moments for sure. And I've,
I've patented that over the years. But for the most part, I try to be as even keeled as possible.
And look, this Colts team is good. They're a legit, good playoff football team. They're going
to be in the playoffs this year. They're a really solid football team. So, you know, we can nitpick
a lot of things. The offensive lines issues the last couple weeks, Daniel Jones, turnovers, the
defense and their third down and red zone struggles, like for sure. They have not been this perfect
football team, but they're a good football team for sure. And one thing I really want to just talk
about with my confidence coming out of the buy, and maybe we can believe this over to the second
segment with the missing Buckner, I think people are undervaluing how important the return of
Mooney Ward is going to be for this defense. Like, I expect him to play against the Chiefs. I don't
have any insider information there, but you know, you put a guy on IR for four weeks with a concussion.
and he's out for what the four or five weeks that it was,
I think he's going to be good to go for this Chief's game.
Having him and Sauce Garner on the field together is a game changer.
It's an absolute game changer for the defense.
And to me, just from my watching of Luz defense all year,
how they've gotten better throughout the weeks
and they've improved in a lot of areas,
you add two number one corners out there.
And this defense, instead of being like a crutch
that the Colts have to just kind of navigate around,
might become another strength of this team.
They might be a team that is worth going all in on down the stretch here.
So, you know, I think that we might be undervaluing how good this defense can be
down the stretch once Ward gets back in there.
I know Buckner's going to be out, and we'll talk about that in the second segment,
but Ward and Gardner out there, like that just makes my confidence so much more excited
because I've been watching some of Ward's clips from earlier the season, some of his games,
and he's just as good, if not better than Sauce Gardner, who's also a really good corner,
like getting both those guys on the field together is going to be massive for this Colts defense.
And it leads to me being even more confident.
Like look at the state of defense this year in the NFL.
It's been dreadful, you know, outside of the Rams and the Broncos and the Texans,
you know, defense has been pretty dreadful.
The Colts can solidify themselves as like a top 5 to 10 defense in the league down the stretch
with two top tier corners on the outside.
And I think that's something that people aren't talking enough about with this Colts team down the stretch.
if the offense just stops turn the football over,
they might have a good enough defense on the other side
to win a lot of football games.
I think it's going to be plenty of exciting.
I mean, you look at the Colts remaining schedule,
and there's not a lot of teams out there
that are able to really lean on the run game,
so they have to be quite reliant on the passing game.
And then when you're looking at it,
and your go-to receivers just are not getting out of their breaks,
they're not separating at all.
That's going to be a big problem.
Like, you're looking at some, who knows if C.J. Stroud will be back, but you could see Davis Mills a little bit. You get Trevor Lawrence twice. I mean, you're looking at some quarterbacks here who will hold on to the ball for too long. And I think it's going to be huge. And it kind of pads the issues with not having Buckner because that'll allow Gallimore and at a time at a Baware. Like, you need those guys to maybe get a little boost and the extra coverage time. You know,
provides that little bit of boost that you miss with Buckner.
So it's going to be huge.
And then whenever you do, hopefully get Buckner back before the playoffs,
that's yet another step up that the defense can take.
So the timing is honestly really exciting.
You don't want any of these guys out and like on IR and everything.
But if you're getting them all back by the end of the season, like I love the timing of it.
It matches up really well with hitting your stride going into the postseason.
And I'll tell you this, as a player, I would be happy that the Chiefs lost because that
means I'm going to get their best shot.
And why the hell else am I playing this game?
Because, you know, how else am I going to figure out if I'm good or not, if I don't get
the best shot from, you know, a team that's gone to the Super Bowl, a team that has so many
accolades and so many named players has been a face of the NFL.
You know, I think the Colts have pretty much had success under the radar.
Now it's time for them to be the marked team.
And the only way they can become the mark team is to go out and defeat a team that is pissed off,
a team that is mad, a team you're going to get your best shot from,
because that's how you figure out if you're any good or not.
No, you're right about that.
We'll talk plenty more about the Chiefs coming up a little bit later on the show.
But next, he's not a quarterback, but I'd argue for this injury,
cold as perhaps the team's most important player.
We'll talk about who that is and what his absence will mean next when the cold squad
show returns.

And we're back on the Locked on Colts Squad Show.
Thanks so much for joining us on this lovely Sunday Eve.
Colts in the buy, most of us were watching,
the ones that weren't raking leads.
We're watching NFL football today.
And we'll talk about those results.
coming up here in just a little bit.
But guys, I think everybody knew who I was talking about there.
DeForest Buckner, going to miss the next couple of weeks on IR.
He went to go seek treatment for his ailing neck.
And that was a big bi-week storyline.
I know, Jake, you wrote about that as well.
The stem cell treatment that he underwent for the neck injury was at the same
treatment center in Panama that's been used by NFL players, including Jonathan Taylor.
And Buckner actually went to underwent treatment at the
same center a year ago, which I think was a, was it an ankle foot, something injury,
ankle injury for last year as well. So, you know, I maybe some red flags when you see stem
cell and leaving the country, right? Why aren't you just doing this with the team doctors?
You know, fans get inquisitive when they see things like this. But, you know, in 2025 teams,
Zach, you know, you talk to these guys and you talk to the players and the agents, they have the
blessing, you know, nobody knows your own body now. And you could speak to this too. Nobody knows
your own body better than the player themselves.
And I like the fact that players have been empowered to do what they feel as best
for them when it comes to getting right, not only getting their bodies right,
but look what Brandon Smith did last year to get his mind right, right?
I just think it's sort of a new generation thing, but I'd be lying about, you know,
Shane Steichen was noncommittal about when he could come back.
And I am, I'm concerned here because we would all agree that not having DeForest Buckner
changes the entire complexion of the defense, even getting Mooney Ward back and having
sauce gardener and having some of these other pieces yeah um you know one thing i will add to that
shame is not committal about everything you could have a guy with just like a light bruise on his ankle
and his full practice and then it's like this guy's out for the year somehow and Shane would never
tell you going into that love Shane death but that's just how he treats media stuff but yeah you know
it is concerning not having to force buckner right and i'm not going to go into too much with
stem cell research and all that i'm not a person who knows anything about that stuff so i can't
give you the insight there but in terms of the colds defense i can give you
you at least some, maybe some comfort with Buckner being out, is just that, you know,
it's much easier to scheme up pressure than it is to scheme up coverage.
So when the Colts were dealing with, you know, all the cornerback issues they had earlier
in the season, no Mooney Ward, no sauce gardener, Xavier Howard out there, Mackay and Blackmail,
Jonathan Edwards, Cameron Mitchell out there, and they were trying to find ways to win games.
We saw how difficult it was for that team on the back end to get things done because it's
easier to scheme up against a pass rusher up front, DeForest Borgman, who's a fantastic football
player, awesome player. But you can kind of work around that, get the ball out quick, target the guys in
the secondary, and just kind of work that way up the field. It's a little bit easier for a defensive
coordinator to scheme up pressure when you have these corners that the Colts are going to have
on the outside. So they can bring five-man rushes, bring six-man rushes. They can simulate
pressure and get offensive linemen's eyes off of guys that they want to bring and get free pressure,
quick pressure looks on quarterbacks and get that ball out fast that way, like we saw against
the Atlanta Falcons.
There was the Colts best third down performance of the season came against the Atlanta
Falcons, and there was no DeForest Buckner out there.
I'm not trying to say that it's good that Buckner is out there.
You'd much rather have Buckner on the field, one of the most important players on this team,
but having these two corners does alleviate that in a big way for this Colts team.
So, you know, again, you want Buckner out there, especially for run defense.
I think if he's out for the year, for instance.
This could be a big issue in the playoffs.
If he's like, you know, good run first football teams, the New England Patriots with a lot of their heavy personnel stuff.
If you face them in the playoffs, that could be pretty tough without Buckner.
But I think for the rest of this year when they play a lot of past first teams, teams that don't run the ball super well, I do think that the Colts can survive this.
Again, they survived early in the season without Mooney Ward or Sauce Garder out there and putting a bunch of practice squad guys out there at corner.
I think they can survive without Buckner.
So it is concerning. Buckner is a star player, fantastic football player, leader of this team.
But I do think they're more equipped to handle this loss than they were earlier in the season to handle the Moody Ward injuries when those popped up.
Or also the Justin Wally injuries when that popped up or the Xavier Howard retirement, all the stuff that happened at corner.
I think they're more equipped to handle this at defensive tackle than they were to handle it at corner.
And they survived that just fine.
And another factor in this all is they should be getting Samson Ebbecom and Taekwon Lewis back soon as well.
Now that obviously doesn't provide the same interior pass rush that Buckner does, but it makes your line deeper in general.
And we know that they'll move like Taekwon Lewis around inside and out.
They'll move JT Tuamolo out inside and out.
So those guys coming back whenever they do, hopefully before Buckner, obviously, it still allows Lou the flexibility to kind of move guys around as an
necessary. So yeah, you get buckner back, hopefully, before the end of the year. And again,
you just kind of treat it, like, instead of dwelling on it, you just treat it as like,
look at this sick new edition we got, like, with a few weeks less than the season. Like, that's kind
because it doesn't, he's on IR. Like, he is going to miss these games. So it kind of doesn't
do us anything dwelling on it until we treat it as a nice surprise when he does come back,
hopefully. And again, with the bonuses and coverage, I don't want to say that we're not going
to notice it because we noticed it right away against Atlanta. But I do think the defense is
going to play well enough overall to where it's not going to be this monumental issue. But then
when he comes back, we will be like, wow, he was sorely missed. Look how good the defense is now.
That's my rose-colored glass half bowl type of view on it.
Yeah, and one thing I want to add with this real quick is remember years ago, was it, was it 2021, I think is what it was, when Buckner missed that Tennessee Titans game and shows just how far behind the Colts defense was.
And it was just a Buckner led defense and that's it.
Because remember Derek Henry ran for like 250 in that game and like three touchdowns.
It was just dreadful.
And we were all saying if Buckner ever misses a game again, this Colts defense can't operate.
And lo and behold, this past week, just to show how far this defense has come and how far this team.
team has come, don't have Buckner against the Atlanta Falcons. I'm not saying the Atlanta
Falcons are some superstar offense, but they have some talent on that side of the ball. They're
able to get that win. And again, the Falcons went 0 for eight on third down in that game. So
this Colts defense is just more equipped now than it ever has been to survive a loss of Buckner,
even if the loss of Buckner is still very upsetting for all of us because he is a great player.
But they do have a lot of talent on that side and a great coach that they should be able to
survive this, in my opinion.
Well, in regards to the stem cell procedure, I'm just in awe of the technology that exists now to treat the players to keep their body in tip-top shape because back in my day, it was just a report to the training facility and put ice on it.
You know, we used ice for just about everything.
And I'm actually impressed that the team approves it because I'll tell you one thing that that happened a lot when I played.
There wasn't a lot of trust with the team doctors because you never knew if their motives were for your own personal good.
You know, their job was to listen to the head coach and get the player out on the field as soon as possible.
You know, so in fact, I remember August 1st, 1992, I blew my knee out.
And I remember seeing guys that had blown their knee out a year before, still hobbling around the facility.
And I was like, hell no, that team doctor ain't touching my knee.
You know, in fact, I went out to Dr. Stedman out in Vail, Colorado, to have my.
my knee done. It's the best thing my agent ever did. He negotiated some good contracts,
but the best thing he ever did was followed that provision in the collective bargaining agreement
that said we can have surgery by whomever we choose. So why wouldn't you go to the best?
Because I knew that the doctor at that time, at the Saints, guys were still complaining about
the ailments they had and everything.
No, indeed, I was going to have him
touch my knee.
So I'm just,
and I also read
something, I guess it was today
that,
what's the receiver for the Cowboys?
Pickens or Lamb?
Yeah, C.D. Lamb, thank you.
C.D. Lamb. He said he spends
$1.3 million
just treating his body
so he can
he can be right for the season.
And so, yes, technology has definitely improved.
But I guess the price of getting that treatment has increased also.
Yeah.
Well, it's such an important part, too, of an NFL players,
because your body is your moneymaker in a sense, you know?
Exactly.
That's the, like, your whole career is based on it.
And, like, players want to be right.
They don't want to go out there at 50%.
But if you miss a season or you miss half a season as a player,
your earning potential it could go because the second they don't see you on the field anymore teams forget about you no matter how highly rated you were of the prospect and all that how many times have we seen it here in indie where a promising player gets hurt before his rookie season and then just fades away into nothing and doesn't make the team anymore so players have to treat their body right and if you're a player like a buckner or cd lamb where you're on that second or that third contract you know you might want to reinvest some of that money into yourself to make sure that this
body can stay holding up and do what he wanted to do. So I hope it all works out for de Forrest
Buckner. We've seen, again, different treatments work for players. Look at what Matthew Stafford had
the whole, uh, whole off season before his MVP caliber season that he's on right now. I don't
mean to put in air quotes. So it's disrespectful, but it's not an official season yet for Matthew
Stafford. But he's up there for MVP and he was on ice throughout all of August, right? He had the
sleep chamber with the acupuncture treatments going on at Rams, uh, perhaps.
and then he comes out and has the best series of his career statistically. So whatever works,
whatever gets you on the field and healthy and to where you feel comfortable. So if this works
for Buckner, like by all means, I mean, he's been a very healthy player in his career. Maybe
stuff like this is a big reason why. So hopefully we can see him again here in 2025 because
he's a fantastic football player. Yeah, not only do the Colts approve of that, but the Ursus
actually flew him out to Panama last year for his ankle. So I assume they did the same with the neck
this year. Yeah. And I think, you know, something that you said, I think Zach said this early in
the show, too, is the fact that you're going to get Ward back and that, you know, Gardner's going to
have some more time in the system and is presumably only going to get better. I think still, you know,
there have been some times where I don't remember what year this was. I'm pretty sure it was 23.
When was the Grover Stewart suspension? Was that 23? 23. Yeah. And remember you took him out and just
everything fell apart, right? And with Buckner, I still think like the defense, it's not like,
you know, to make a bad analogy, it's not like Jenga, where you're just kind of pulling out the bottom
thing and it's just, the whole tower is going to topple over. Yeah, missing him for a couple of games
is going to be something that they have to overcome, but I don't think there's a reason to think
that the entire house is going to collapse, not having Buckner. And I think that's a testament
to where this Colts defense is and, you know, the aggression that they've been before the
trade deadline and making the Soss Gardner deal as well. And,
and what they did in free agency, adding Biden and Ward.
Yeah, and adding Neville Gallimore in there, Tommy's big step up this year.
Like, they're more equipped now than what they were in 2023 when it was Tave and Brian,
go play some zero tech, go play some one tech.
You've never played it in your life.
And even when he was asked in an interview after one of the games, like,
hey, have you ever played one tech before?
Nope, never in my life.
He's out there playing one tech against the Green Bay Packers went in a 40, like,
I think the Packers ran it like 50 times in that game.
And they had him playing one tech the entire day.
It's like, what are we doing here?
So the Colts are much better equipped this year to handle a loss.
Even if it is still a big step back in play,
it's not to the same drastic level that it was in 2023 or again,
that 2021 game that Buckner missed against the Titans where I don't know who they threw
out there in that game.
All I remember is Henry was running through everybody in that one.
I think they can survive this a little bit better this year because they are a playoff
caliber team.
They are a team that can compete in the AFC and that's different from maybe that
2023 or 2021 team.
Well, I just, I have a question because this is my first year with the Colts actually paying attention.
But has Chris Ballard always been this aggressive because it just, it seems like all the moves that have been made are moves to help you win.
And you know who appreciates that the most?
The players on the team, you know, because I've just been involved in too many cost-cutting type of.
moves or financial moves that made no sense or, you know, there's sometimes
to be guys on the team that there's no way in the world he should be getting a paycheck.
But he is.
But it just seems like the Colts in management upstairs has been all in this year.
And it's pleasant to see because you should be in it to win it.
Zach, go ahead and tell him his nickname.
We'll be quick with this because Derek's got to get us in the next segment.
But I feel like Alan would be shocked to know that his nickname before the year was Bargain Bin Ballard was what it was.
It was a lot of like if someone gets hurt before the year, the undrafted free agent we brought in, it's got to step up now.
We're not bringing in and somebody else to know.
So that was his nickname was Bargain Ben Ballard.
Now he's Blockbuster Ballard or something, I guess.
But yeah, Bargant Bin Ballard was his name.
Yeah, Alan, he's a guy that's very much trust his draft process, I would say.
Let's be kind to Chris Power.
They are 8 and 2 after all,
so I guess you deserve some credit for that.
But when we come back here on the Colts Squad show,
Colts fans had a rooting interest in several games today,
and I'm disappointed to report that pretty much all of those rooting interests lost.
We'll talk about how Indy didn't get any help while they were off this week

Before we get to the buy week results, I did want to add,
you know, Zach had mentioned the Taven Brian quote about,
I went back and looked at that article because I was like,
there was something else hilarious that he told Nate Atkins.
and it was when looking back on playing One Tech, right?
Brian was asked about it, and this is a direct quote.
Quote, I can play either.
I don't really care for nose, but I can play it.
We won't lose because of it, but it's not going to look that great.
So that's probably what you don't want to say
or what you don't want to have said if you're a coach,
a player say about being forced into position.
But Godspeed, Tave and Brian.
That was an error that was, yeah.
Look, we were all thinking it.
We were all thinking it, too.
Yeah, appreciate the honesty there.
So we talked about the Chiefs already,
but, you know, Patriots beating the Jets
because the Patriots basically just have tomato cans
the rest of the way in their schedule.
And then the Broncos beating the Chiefs.
That both pushed those teams to nine and two.
So the Colts go further down, the AFC standings.
I was actually really interested to see what the Jaguars would do today
after just the most crushing collapse possible,
not only did you collapse,
but you gave a division rival new life
with the Texans running off
that insane fourth quarter comeback last week,
and they shook it right off.
I mean, they pounded the charges today,
35 to 6.
And then the Texans avoided a trap in Nashville
with a game that you should never watch
unless you want your eyeballs to start bleeding.
1613, Houston ended up being Tennessee,
so they're still clinically alive
when it comes to the AFC South.
You know, you look around,
and it sort of, I guess, is what it is.
The Colts still control their own destiny.
I still feel great about them winning the AFC South.
And, you know, guys, and I don't want to sound like this is a loser's mindset or anything like this.
But for a team that hasn't won the division in 11 years, like, I'm just trying to get to the first checkpoint here.
I'm not really worried about like, AFCC.
Do I want the Colts to be the one seat?
Yeah, of course.
Yeah, that'd be great to have the buy and all of that.
But like, I'm really just kind of focused on, hey, let's check that first box and then worry about the
other stuff and let that stuff take care of itself. I know that's that doesn't make for great
takes on locked on cult shows, right, Zach? But that's sort of where I, how I feel right now.
Come on, Derek. I declare that they're going to be the one seed or else. You know, like the
100. It's what I always do to Jake when we do our bold predictions. I always like, I go on. He's
taken the points. Yeah. I go on Jake to go like more extreme and then it comes back to Biden by
the end of the season. But no, like, you know, when it comes to the cults, you know, at the end of the
day they control their own destiny everything that happens going forward they built up such a lead
where you have two losses in the loss column right now everything going forward comes down to how you
perform on the weekend because you have built up like everything that you can so just take care of business
on a week to week basis but because we're not players because we're not in the building we have the
benefit of being able to be worried about other things and looking at other things and and caring about
other things and yeah I wish the chiefs were coming off a win against the Colts because then they
they maybe would have let their guard down a little bit and the Colts could have got out to a
little bit of a lead. Now they're going to get a championship, maybe they're not a championship
caliber team this year, but a team with championship DNA just in terms of who is leading their
team and what they've done the last couple years, you're going to get their best, most desperate
shot of the season at home in front of their home crowd. It's going to be like a playoff
atmosphere next week. I don't care. The Chiefs could have zero wins this year. And I would
still say, hey, going into their stadium with their pedigree the last couple of years, you're going
get a championship punch from them.
So the Colts got to be on top of it.
In terms of the divisional games, yeah, like I, I mean, I had my bold prediction
yesterday that I thought the Titans were going to knock off the Texans.
I was, that was so close.
I was so close.
All they had to do was get off the field on 3rd and 16, and we could have got it, Jake.
I was so close to my prediction being correct.
But of course, it's the Titans.
You can't really bank too much on it.
But yeah, like the Colts, at least, the biggest thing when it comes to the ASC South is
you play those two teams four times.
you know winning this division comes down to how the Colts play in those games those teams
could win every other game on their schedule if they if the Colts take care of business in those
four games they've got the division so take care of business take care of what you can control
because nothing no scoreboard watching changes anything for the Colts right now because
they've built up such a lead in everything right now like sure the one C they might need a little
bit of help because the Patriots are playing a bunch of preschool teams the rest of the way
but I think that when it comes to just where they want to go
and being a higher seed going into the playoffs
and winning this division,
just take care of the games in front of you.
You know,
like that's the most important aspect of this
because we're not where we are in 2023.
We're not where we are,
we were in 2021,
where we needed all this help going into week 18,
going into week 17 where,
okay, if this team lost,
if this team tied,
if this team did this,
then the Colts have a chance to make the playoffs.
No, they're eight and two.
Just win a couple more games.
and you're good to go.
Like, that's all that matters.
So they've put themselves in a position
where they don't have to be scoreboard watching around the league
because they are a good football team.
Just continue that train the rest of the way,
and we're good to go.
You kind of have my sight set on the higher prize, too.
You know what I mean?
Like, the number one seed.
I'm with you at the same time, Derek.
Like, they do need to kind of check off the division box first
because if you look like the AFC North,
Zach and I were talking about this on Friday,
like if the Bengals would have won and if the Bengals won and the Browns one,
I think the AFC North lead would have flip-flop.
Like you can go from being like the one seed to like the fifth or six so quickly.
So it's good to obviously knock that division out and then you're locked into a top four seed.
You get at least one home playoff game.
So like there's obviously merit to that.
But with the Colts back portion of the schedule looking like it does,
I'm interested in the race for that number one seed.
You know, obviously Denver and New England winning this week while the Colts were, you know, on their by week, it definitely doesn't help.
But, you know, they've got some trials coming up.
You hope when the Patriots face the bills that it's one of the good bills weeks and not one of the bills against the Falcons, you just, you never know with that, which kind of goes back around to like, who cares what any other team is doing because.
a lot of these teams look like crap half the time and then sometimes you get a really good week
out of them but all i know is next week against the chiefs regardless of what the colts do
they're they're not going to be able to win in the national perception because like if they go
out and beat the chiefs it'll be about what's wrong with the chiefs because a lot of people have
already started to victory lap daniel jones and the colts not really being that good and things
like that. And then if the chiefs beat the Colts, then of course, that just furthers their agenda
a little further. So that's just me being pre-salty and worrying about things that haven't happened
yet. So don't, you know, don't get on me about that. But no, I'm with you. You know, check the
division box first technically. Like, let's have good manners about it. But at the end of the day,
we're going for that number one seat, fellas. Well, do you remember what I said at the beginning of
the year, win your first game, win your home games, win the division.
You know, so it's a step-by-step process.
And, you know, I think the advantage the Colts have is they have a system in process to beat
teams, you know, yeah, it's their by week, but they're still what, number one in
total offense, number four and passing offense, number three.
and rushing offense, you know, Daniel Jones and Jonathan Taylor, you know, they stand where
they stand, which is pretty damn good. And it hasn't been anything super special or complicated
that they've done. They've just been executing ball at a high level. I think the one thing
that will maybe be a little different is, you know what you're going to get from your division teams
now. You know they're going to be playing with some type of desperation. You know you're going to get
their best shot because they're trying to claw their way back up. But you don't have to worry
because of the way that you're currently playing. You know, the way you run that offense is the way
you run that offense. And it's tried and true. And as long as you don't beat yourself, you're going to
put yourself in a position to win most of these games. Yeah. And the most important thing for the
Colts down the stretch is you're going to get every team's desperation shot.
the rest of the way because they don't play any like pushover teams you know jake and i were talking on friday
show where they don't maybe they don't play like any juggernaut teams like the the seahawks i think
are still a really good football team despite their loss but maybe you don't play any like insanely
great teams but you still play a lot of teams that are desperate i mean the chiefs are our win or out
basically mode the rest of the year the jaguars and texans are on the borderline the 49ers have been
very up and down this season and they're going to probably need to win those late games as well
so all these teams are going to be extremely desperate
coming into their game against the Colts.
For the Colts, they can't just sit back and say,
ah, we're 8 and 2, we have all this leadway the rest of the way.
It needs to be, we need to match that desperation.
However desperate that other team is,
we need to be twice as desperate.
Fight like every single game your season is on the line,
even if it's not, because every win matters in the NFL.
The difference between the 3-seat and the 2-seat
is massive for the Colts,
especially when you consider they're 5-0 and true home games this year.
Six and O if you count the overseas game, but five and O in true home games this year,
averaging almost 40 points a game or what 35 points per game at home, they have been one of the
best home teams in football.
So they can't just sit back and say, ah, we'll win our division at 10 wins or 11 wins.
It needs to be, we need to get as much home games as possible in the playoffs because no one's
coming in our home and beating us this year.
We need to make sure that stands in the playoffs as well.
So go out there and fight every game like your seasons on the line, make every game as
important as some of those early season wins that they've had, maybe like that gutsy win
over the Broncos, make every game as desperate as that one.
Yeah, I'm glad you pointed that one out too, Zach, because think about the conversation
we're having today if that game flips and there's no penalty on that traitor kick, and suddenly
not only do you not have the head-to-head with Denver, you're seven and three, you're only a game
up on Jacksonville at that point.
I mean, you know, it would have really changed the arithmetic.
That game ended up, you know, you're not thinking about it when it's week two or whatever
the season that, oh, my God, this game's.
going to be crucial, but that game, Alan, might end up paying huge dividends for the Colts here
in December, January. No, no doubt about it. And you handle your business. And so nothing changes.
You know what you're going to get, but you know what you're going to put out, too. You know,
you want that challenge of a team's best shot because, you know, that's how you measure how good
you are. And I think the Colts are pretty damn good this year. And, you know, winning is
a hell of an antidote, a hell of a drug, I guess I should say, you know, that you want to keep
taken. So you know how good it feels to win and you know how to win. You've proved you know
how to win. So it's not some extraordinary effort. It's you doing your job. You've proven that
if you just do your job, everybody individually and collectively, you should win. Yeah. And the last
thing I'll say real quick is like look if the Colts can't handle these desperate shots from these
teams they don't they don't deserve to be a team that can go to the playoffs and win deep in the
playoffs like this is the test of a playoff team you're going to get every team's best shot now because
you're no longer the the cults are overperforming you're the oh this is the eight and two team coming
into town like we need to have our best shot ready and if you're not able to handle that and
answer to it like the Broncos did today for instance against the Chiefs then you don't
deserve to be in the playoffs so the Colts got to come ready
and they got to answer it and be that mature football team
that we've seen them be all season long.
And you want it to be, you don't want it to be like a Navy one-lost team.
You want it to be like a Georgia one-loss team.
Right, yeah.
Man, Middys catching strays on the show for Allen.
Jeez.
How do NFL players handle their bye weeks?
What is it like in the heat of the season to flip the switch off?
We'll ask the only actual expert on that topic on this panel next
when the Colts Squad show returns.
Back for a final time here on the Colts Squad Show.
Thanks so much for joining us alongside Alan Pinkett, former Notre Dame and Houston Oilers running back in the locked-on Colts duo of Jake Arthur and Zach Hicks.
I'm Derek Schultz.
Colts in the buy at 8 and 2.
So still doing the Sunday show, even though obviously there was no game to talk about today.
But we really appreciate you guys joining us.
as we'll flip it into game mode this week,
a big one coming up at Arrowhead,
and we all know a season-defining stretch ahead for the Colts here.
But, you know, Alan, I don't think it's hard.
If you're new to Locked-on Colts,
just the case you don't know,
75% of this panel has no NFL experience whatsoever.
I know probably just visually,
if you're watching us on YouTube,
you probably realize that already.
Maybe our audio podcast listeners needed a little bit of a leg up.
Alan played football for years and years as a high school superstar,
was a legendary player and left Notre Dame as their all-time leading rusher in college
and then had a very fruitful NFL career on really good annual playoff contending teams in Houston
with the old Love You Blue Oilers.
So, Alan, I'll have to ask you, even though, you know, over the years Jake from being in the
locker room or Zach from talking to players and agents or me from being in the locker room,
you know, we've gotten it secondhand from how players handle their by weeks, and we've been told
that.
but from somebody that experienced it firsthand, what is it like? And, you know,
you know how intense an NFL Sunday is. How do you just kind of flip that switch off and just
escape from football during the by week as much as you can? Well, I think what most players do is
go back to their alma mater and watch them play and just have, you know, good memories of what
it was like to play in college where it's still a business in college, but it's not the business of
the NFL. But it's, it's, it's good to break the routine, you know, because every Wednesday is
the same, you know, the running back is saying the same damn thing week after week after week
gets old as hell. So to have a Wednesday or Thursday where you don't have to hear them is
actually refreshing. And so you need that. It's just like anybody needing a vacation so you can
recharge your battery so you can come back stronger. So being able to get away from football
for maybe just a couple of days because it's not like they give them the entire week off unless
that has changed too. Usually they'll give them like a weekend off. They'll give them like four
days off. But you still have to come to the facility if you're injured and you and you still want
to be watching film a little bit. But you could take three or four days off. And,
And that's just good for your mind and for your soul.
The other thing you want to do is make sure that you self-scout.
And it's self-scot individually and self-scout as a team
because you're always so focused on looking at the tendencies of other teams
and preparing yourself for what those tendencies will be.
But you don't know your own tendencies.
You know, so you have to, you know, step outside your body a little bit and look at what you're doing.
You know, one of the things I used to do early in my career was I would walk up to the line of scrimmage and I'd be in the eye formation.
And if I was going to run the ball, I would, you know, lick my fingers.
And so then I started to figure out that, okay, wait a minute, the defense is looking for any type of key that they can to,
see if you're going to be running the ball and that. So what I started doing, I'd head to self-scout
to figure out, okay, this is what I'm doing. And so after that, I just lick my fingers all the time.
Yeah, you at least lick it on passing plays, too. That's definitely the answer. Yeah, yeah, but then
thank God that we started wearing gloves, because, I mean, gloves weren't that popular until,
like, the latter part of my NFL career. Guys just didn't wear gloves, but gloves make all
a difference in the world.
They don't have to lick the fingers anymore either.
You know, the other thing you want to do is, man, get healthy because you get in the
middle of the season.
Everybody's got nicks and bruises and cuts and just, you know, nagging injuries.
And it's amazing how much healthier you can get in just a week of not getting beat up.
And my personal experience there was, I remember in college, I came into the 1984 season.
I don't know if I've told this story to you guys before or not, but I came into the 1984 season with kind of a suspect ankle.
But one thing that happened was I kept re-injuring it as weeks would go by.
And it's like, damn, you know, I keep taking a step back.
And there was finally, finally one week, it wasn't a bi-week, but it was a week where I didn't re-injured the ankle.
So now I end up being 100%.
But it felt like it was a bi-week because I didn't have to come in for so much treatment.
But after that particular week where I didn't re-injured the ankle, I went 160, 162.
187, 99, you know, so for these guys to just have that one week where they're not getting hit upside the head means so much, especially now that they've put themselves in a position where they can go win it all to be healthy and do it just gives them that much more of an advantage.
You know, so those are really the ways you handle a buy week.
You got to, you know, restore your soul and get your mind in the right place.
And being able to get away from it a little bit actually helps you appreciate the fact that you're playing in the National Football League.
And know that not all you're playing in the league, but now you have a chance to go get some hope.
hardware, to really put yourself in a position to get long money now because everybody is
wanting to get that second and third contract. Usually when you win, they keep those guys
together a lot longer. That's one of the things I figured out when I was playing with the
Oilers because my first year, we went like four and 12, and that revolving door would spin
and they'd bring in new people all the time.
But what happened in 1987, we figured out we like each other.
And we figured out the only way we were going to stay together
is if we started winning games.
And so when you win, you can now develop some very strong relationships
and friendships because you're afraid to go into a relationship with somebody
because you can get cut in a second.
In fact, you don't even talk to a lot.
lot of the undrafted rookies and free agents because, you know, they're just there to take up
space. Don't go into a relationship with them because they're going to be gone at some point
in August. So now when your team can stay together longer, think about the bond that you build,
the camaraderie that you build because you put yourself in a position now where you see guys
that have families, you know, and kids.
And so now you're not just playing for yourself.
You're playing to support some of those other families.
And so when you can play for something bigger than yourself,
you're usually going to give a much better effort.
So I'll get off my soapbox now.
Well, one thing I wanted to add was, you know,
when it comes to the bye week,
there's one thing that I think is really tough for fans.
And I'm not saying this is every single fan,
but just in general, especially with the rise of like betting and stuff.
and wagering when it comes to players
is we kind of forget that players are people.
You know, at the end of the day, like, this is a job.
Like, yes, they have to be wired different
to play a sport, a contact sport at a high level
for as long as these players do.
But the end of day, they're people, you know,
and it's not just football for them.
There's a lot of these guys have wives.
They have kids.
They have things at home.
And, you know, I've never played in the NFL, obviously,
but I've worked many jobs.
And you know what the most refreshing thing ever is for me?
If I have a couple days off to spend time with my wife.
to spend time at home, to spend time just doing things that are part of my personal life.
So for these players who are constantly living, like, bagged just in this travel bag or whatever,
going across the country, going to Berlin for a game, or whatever, to get a couple of days
just to hang out with your wife or your kid or, you know, your friends, like, whatever it is,
it's huge for these players.
And it's a refreshing thing.
And I think that, like, the biweek is just so important for these guys, not only, like,
for what Allen's at, like, getting healthy physically,
but getting them healthy just like in mind and spirit like you said at the beginning there
Alan where it's like just getting your brain back like okay this is my personal life that I've
been missing all year I got my time with them now I can get back to my job for the rest of the
year before you know getting back to them again in the off season like this is my last
little breath of freedom I guess with my personal life before I had to get back to this
push for the Super Bowl so yeah it's just it's so vital for these guys to get that
refresher. Honestly, I wish there were two buys in the season for players, especially if they want
to keep adding games on the year. I wish they could get an extra buy in there. But yeah, it's such
an important thing to remember. People with like betting and wagering, I think it kind of pulls away
the thing where people are like, these are people like, yes, they're wired different to play
the NFL. You have to be wired at a different level to play in the NFL. Don't get me wrong. But
these are human beings. They have personal lives. And sometimes it's good when they can get this by week
can just breathe for a second.
You know, like you said, Alan, it's not a whole week they get off.
I've talked to players in the past where I remember one guy was like, yeah, my couple days,
I'm going to take my family to the zoo, the Indianapolis Zoo for the first time and stuff,
is what they said a couple years ago, and then get right back to film and workout and
going to one of their specialists that work in the all season for a day.
You know, they have their routine still, but those couple days they get just with their family
again, really, because again, they're living suitcase to suitcase, like giving that one
day or two days, whatever it is, is so big for that playoff push late in the season.
Yeah, you think of a guy like Soss Gardner who was here in Indy for five seconds.
Like his whole entire life still is back in New Jersey.
Like he's probably taking the buy week to like get acclimated to his new home because like
he's in Indy now for an extended period of time.
This isn't just a rental.
Like he was traded to Indy and it's going to be here for the long haul.
So like you think of just like simple things like that, like a guy.
figuring out what his life is going to look like now off the field and then you know allan you
mentioned about like the nicks and cuts and scrapes and everything and like that really does
all get glossed over seamlessly like i'm thinking back to like the the locker room after the game
against pittsburgh and like obviously we see these guys like without their shirts on the stuff and i just
saw like alec pierce had his shirt off and he had this big abrasion on his back and i'm just like you know
he's not going to be on the injury report with that but jesus if that's not going to hurt when his
adrenaline wears off you know what i mean it's like just stuff like that like not having to
have shoulder pads on to rub up against stuff like like just the ease of being able to rest your
body and mind from it has got to be incredibly refreshing for these guys yeah oh and i'll say this i think
one of the greatest inventions in the world uh is field turf because i think the worst
worst injury, I wouldn't call it an injury,
but the worst thing I would get on this old artificial turf,
I'd call it ghetto turf, was rug burns.
Oh, my gosh, it was awful.
The rug burns would just, I mean, I couldn't sleep at night.
I couldn't ever get in the position to be comfortable
because I've got this burn on my elbow,
this burn on my leg.
And it's like, they can't find anything better than this stuff
for us to play on so i have i actually have a football story now because i played on an old uh washington
football team Washington you know their old team name uh they one of their old practice facilities
was something i played on when i was a little league kid or whatever so it was like this really
old like turf that they had yeah and i remember i slid on on it at one point in the game my whole arm
just like bloody and it was awful those burns on those old turf fields all they were terrible i'm
so, like, they're so good now.
I was on, my sister plays a lot of soccer and I was feeling up, like, feeling one of
their, like, turf fields that they play on.
And it's like, oh, my gosh, this is so much better than what, like, even I played on,
which was not even that long.
It was like 15 years ago, 20 years ago, like, not even that big a deal.
But, yeah, those, those old turf fields, like, just to get any kind of rest from that
was awesome for me as a kid.
I can't imagine as adults and how fast you guys were moving compared to me just falling on
my face as a little kid.
Well, Alan, if you're feeling nostalgic, this is a true.
story a really close friend of mine who some people on this panel know um crawled through an air duct
and got into the astrodome and is so nostalgic about the 70s and 80s took some astro turf
that was still rolled up there and cut up it cut it up in a chunks and I have one um it's actually
in my basement so I could I can ship you some if you just want to rub it on your arm or whatever and
remember what that old feeling felt like from from back of the day um we'll close with that
it was Jake you don't have to say it's Jake Arthur we know not
It was a different, Jake.
I'm certain, but not as well.
Yeah, I would love to have it so I could burn it.
There you go.
