Welcome to the Colts Squad Show.
I'm your host, Derek Schultz,
and it always feels good to win down at Lucas Oil Stadium South, doesn't it?
And I'm Zach Hicks.
I'm going to say the same thing I say after every post game is winning Cures All,
and I feel cured right now after another win.
I'm Allen.
Thank you, former player.
All I have to say is people want to call them Indiana Jones.
I like to call them Danny Wins.
Colts Nation, rise up.
It's the Colt Squad, everything Indianapolis Colts every week, covering all the big hits and game-changing plays from the Circle City, the way only the Locked-on Podcast Network can.
It's time to squad up.
The Colt Squad Joe starts now.
Welcome in another Victory Sunday for the Colts Squad Show, and thanks as always for making us your first listen to the day here on the Locked On Colts Network.
This episode brought you by Mazda.
Like our players, we sweat every detail.
because when you make every move count, pulling off the unexpected is only the beginning.
Stay tuned later for highlights in this week's moving the game forward.
Mazda move and be moved.
I'm Derek Schultz.
I've been a longtime sports soccer here in Indianapolis.
I'm joined by Nourname Legend and former Oilers running back Alan Pinkett.
And you every day are no Zach Hicks from Locked on Colts.
And hopefully we'll get Jake Arthur coming up a little bit later on.
He is at Lucas Loyal Stadium South air quotes down there at Nashville where the Colts had knocked off Tennessee, 41 to 20.
And today we're going to be recapping a relatively.
easy and stress-free win, which is always nice, especially for a division road game as the
colds start off not only 3 and 0, but 1-0 in the AFC South and 1-0 away from home.
Another solid showing from Daniel Jones in this offense as they continue to be efficient and
sharp and putting up big numbers at 41 points.
I know seven of that is from Kenny Moore in the defense, but another strong showing from
the O week three studs and duds every week.
We'll talk about the standout performers and some of the performers.
it didn't stand out so much.
And what's up with the pass rush?
Looking on paper, you'd be like, hey, this is pretty good, right?
But watching the game and understanding the context of what the Titans were dealing with injury-wise
left a lot to be desired, I thought.
So, again, Zach, it feels good to nitpick, though, right?
Because that's exactly what we're doing here.
We're nitpicking.
All in all, you couldn't have asked for a better first three games from this Colts team.
Yeah, you know, your goal for me, at least,
I know Alan's going to get into his checklist, obviously.
of what you want to do at each season.
But when it comes to how I view the NFL season is like each month just come out at
500 or better and you'll have and you'll be in the playoffs.
You know, obviously you want to be better in some of those months to have that winning
record.
But 500 or better each month and you're going to have a good chance of making the playoffs or
at least be an above average team.
And they're already guaranteed to have an above 500 September.
And we still have one more game left here.
They're three and O.
They're ahead of the AFC South.
And if I told you this is how it was going to start this season.
going into the year, you would have called me crazy.
I would have called me crazy coming into the season.
The Colts offense averaging 34 points a game,
well over 400 yards per game.
They're doing it through the air, doing it on the ground.
The quarterback play's been great.
The running back play's been great.
The O line's been very good.
And even the defense, I think, has been probably the weaker of the two units.
But I think the defense has been pretty up and down,
but pretty fine overall.
So, yeah, this Colts team sitting at 3-0,
they're 1-0 in the division.
They've won two home games already.
this is the best kind of start that you could possibly ask for for the Colts and two blowout
victories as well to start the year. So yeah, this has been fantastic for the Colts and hopefully
they can ride this train a couple more weeks or at least the rest of the year. Let's go 17 and 0 at
this point. Manning had them ready to go back in 2009. I mean, look, Derek, were, were you covering
the team back in 09, Derek, when they started that? Yeah. So back in 09, you covered that team the last
time they went 3 and 0 and they carried that to 14 and now. Let's keep riding this thing. Let's
keep caring it to the end of the year.
Well, I can't
understate how
impressive that win was because
let's face it, it's
tough to go on the road.
There are so many things against you.
The atmosphere is completely
different, but they just
methodically took down
this Titans team and
made them look bad.
And, you know, I was just
to say that the Colts operation
is so sad.
sound, so fundamentally sound, and if I was a player, I would love to be in this offense
because not one person can get singled out, I guess besides Jonathan Taylor for his rushing
ability. But if I'm a receiver, I'd love being on this team because I know I'm going to get
plenty of shots because they spread the ball around. And that puts so much pressure on the
opposing defense because they can't single one guy out and say, okay, we're going to double this guy
or we're just going to focus on this guy
because all the receivers that the Colts have can do damage.
And, you know, got to give credit to the defense too
with four sacks on this Cam Ward who I think is pretty elusive,
has a strong arm and has made some spectacular plays
thus far during the season.
But they pretty much contained him in the only deep ball
I saw him throw, which I thought he'd be going
over the top all day. But the only deep ball I saw is when Chavarius Ward went out of the game
and they finally decided to throw it deep. But thanks Colts did a great job of keeping everything
in front of them so that they could make a play. If they wanted to do a bend but don't break,
fine, but you're not going to go over top of us. You're not going to score an easy one on us.
So overall, like I say, a good operation by the Colts and just systematically,
breaking down the Titans.
Yeah, and one thing I want to add to with that, Alan, is, you know, I was saying all
week where if the Colts want to be this team that we take seriously, a team that's more
than what they've been in the last couple of year, this fringe 500 team that could
maybe be the seven seed in the NFL, if you want to be taken seriously as this
AFC South frontrunner that is a legit playoff contender this year, you can't just not show
up to this game against Tennessee Titans, a division game on the road against a team that
had the number one overall pick last year.
They're not magically this great team.
So you need to come in here and establish early that you are the team to beat.
You are the better team here.
You need to control this game.
What do they do?
They come out here, get the pick six on the very first drive.
They're able to go up early and get some more points right after that.
And they were just kind of coasting since halfway through the second quarter.
And that's what good teams do.
You know, when you have a chance to play against a team like Tennessee that operationally is
just not where they need to be right now, they're just not very.
great right now in general, like all around the board, you need to take care of business and
win by multi-scores. And this just wasn't a game where the Colts were threatened. I mean, I think any
game, Sands injuries, obviously, where we get to see Dalton Tucker, Daniel Scott, Danny Pinter,
Anthony Richardson all take some snaps. It means you were doing something right out there. So,
yeah, this is just a type of game where if you're a good team, if you're a legit, good team,
this is what you want to see. Because operationally, they were the much better team.
and they were barely tested in this one.
So we've had two games now to start this year
where the Colts have just not really been tested
because they've been that much better than their opponents.
And I think that's a great sign for this team going forward.
Yeah, and if week one was an A plus, today felt more like a B.
Like they were good today.
I didn't think they were great.
And it feels great to be like, yeah, guys,
the Colts won by 21 on the road.
They were just good today.
They weren't perfect.
They weren't great.
That's a great place to be for this.
team you know I said at halftime I felt that way too and you know firmly in control never
threatened all of those things I wasn't stressing at all but I'm thinking myself man what a great
place for the Colts to be that we're nitpicking these sort of things because we're thinking
there's so much more that this team can do when they have their fastball you know so many
for the last two games the Colts have pretty much on offense been on schedule you know
they've gotten manageable third downs this particular
game, you did have a couple of drops. You did get in some situations where, you know, they
didn't gain any yards on first down or second down, but they never blinked. They never
panicked. And that's what confidence does for you. You know, I think that the quarterback is
confident that he's going to make the right read, get it to the right person, and the receivers
are confident. And the other thing that I do admire about this Colts team is that they
stick with the running game. You know, you're going to have a lot of carries for no gain,
two yards, three yards. But if you stick with it, you're eventually going to bust that one.
And J.T. finally got one for 46 when it really did count. But I'll also say this. I think the dagger,
the dagger came in the first drive in the second half where they went down and scored and put them up
27 to 6. I think at that moment, they just let the Titans know there is no way you're going to
come back in this game, especially if we play like this when we're firing on all cylinders.
And to me, the Titans, especially near the end of the second half, were playing, you know,
not to lose instead of playing to win. When they had a shot at, you know, getting the ball down
field, you know, for God's sakes, you got the number one draft pick.
in the league, and you're running the ball three times to get, what, a 60-yard field goal,
although he may have thought, Callahan may have thought he was Shane Seichen from the week before.
But to me, that was a team that the coaching staff didn't have confidence in their players
to execute what they needed to do. And I think that the Colts made the Titans play right into
their hands. If you want to take an eight minute drive and just run the ball and take your time
and not play with any urgency, that's fine. We're up 20. So go ahead because, you know, we all want
to get home early. So go ahead and waste time. Yeah. And one thing I really want to add too about
just the offense is we talked about it on the show this week on Wednesday. And Jake and I even
talked about it on our show all week long was regression is certainly going to happen with the
offense. You're not going to get into the red zone every single drive of the season. You're
certainly going to get a punt in there, although they only kicked one punt today and had one
misfield goal, I guess, where there are two possessions where they didn't get points. But there
was a little bit of that regression today. Like Allen said, there were a couple third and
eights. There were a couple times where Jones was pressured. There were a couple times where
they punted or got no points because the punt or the misfield goal. But when that regression
happened, the other regression kicked in, which is what we call positive regression, which
is the red zone offense started clicking for once.
The first drive of the game, they didn't score in the red zone,
but after that they were near perfect.
I think they were perfect, actually, after that in the red zone,
where they were able to convert on that touchdown to Pittman
out of the first half into the second half.
Really great play by Daniel Jones,
just finding that high, low, and ripping it over the middle.
Jonathan Taylor, they started giving him the ball more in the red zone.
We saw him punch it in, and then we saw them finish off the big plays,
like Taylor's long run.
You know, again, we can talk through these first couple weeks where it's like, oh, yeah, the Colts, there's some regression here.
They're playing too bad teams in the first couple weeks, yada, yada, yada, you know, like all these things here.
But, you know, for wherever there's going to be some negative regression, you'll get some positive aggression.
I think at the end of the day, it's a good Colts offense.
Like, I think this is going to be like a top 10 offense by the end of the year, as long as they say healthy, just because they just have so many pieces and so many weapons and a quarterback that knows what he needs to do.
So the big question will just be, how long can they go without turning the ball over?
Because that's the other big regression part that we're waiting to drop here.
So we'll see if that one eventually drops or maybe they just don't turn the ball over this whole season.
But on the other side on defenses, can they kind of clean up some things there?
But overall, yeah, I think this is going to be a pretty good Colts football team.
And I think they've shown everything you need to see for them through three weeks.
I mean, coming into the year, I wasn't the most optimistic about this Colts team.
You guys watching all know that.
I wasn't super optimistic about this, but for me, I'm someone who changes my opinion with more data and more information available.
I don't know what more you need to see from Daniel Jones and the Colts offense through three weeks to say, like, yeah, they're going to be pretty darn good this season on that side of the ball.
And even on defense, I think there's some good things there too.
So I'm feeling really good right now.
I mean, look, three and O, you're going to feel great.
But I feel really, really good about everything that's happening with this Colts team to have two blowout victories to start the year.
and then winning against a playoff caliber team like the Broncos,
yeah, I'm really loving what we're seeing here from this Colts team.
Yeah, that's not a thing.
Go ahead, I was just going to say that I think the Titans gave the Rams last week
a much tougher game, even though they hung in there for the first half
and then finally lost team.
And I know that you can't say, well, okay, so the Titans beat the Rams,
And then the Colts beat the Titans, therefore the Pulse should beat the Rams.
It's not that each game is its own entity.
But I know there was some struggle with the Rams finally getting some separation from the Titans.
But this thing, the separation came very, very early from the Titans with the Colts today
and just showing how much of a dominant force they were beating this team.
I don't think there was ever any instance where I thought of, you know, a potential comeback or maybe momentum was swinging towards the Titans.
It did the folks just put the hammer down and just kept their foot on the gas the entire time.
Yeah, and I don't care who you're playing.
It's very difficult in the NFL to win by 25 and 21 points in three weeks.
It's very difficult to do that.
Like this isn't college football where you're playing Southwestern Texas Christian Tech.
in September, right?
And even beating those teams by that much sometimes can be challenging,
but especially in the league where the floor and ceiling of the top teams
and the bottom teams is much narrower than we see on the collegiate level.
I think that's a testament to, you know,
the Colts played kind of a B game today.
And they won, this is a blowout.
21 points is a rom.
That's a route.
And for them to have that ability to do that and play a B game,
I think says a lot about where they are here at this early portion of the
season. But Daniel Jones are the Colts offense, guys. They've now done something that not even
Peyton Manning's Colts teams did. We'll tell you what that is next, and we'll talk about
another good day from the Colts offense and cleaning up some things on the defense when we
return on the squad show. This episode is brought to you by Price Picks. The Daily
Fantasy app we're making the right call can actually pay off. You and I make decisions every day,

And we're back on the Colt Squad Show.
Thanks so much for joining us alongside Alan Pinkin and Zach Hicks on Derek Schultz.
Indies 3-0 atop the AFC South all alone.
Now a three-game lead over Houston.
How about that, guys?
three-game lead over the Titans as well. Jacksonville knocking off Houston today to go to two
and one. So the Colts one game up there on the Jaguars, but a good place to be through the
first three weeks of the season. So I mentioned that the Colts did something that not even
Peyton Manning's teams did. This has never been done in their Indianapolis history.
They've scored 103 points in their first three games. Apparently, hats to Jim Iello,
the old Colts beat rider from the star, who's now an NFL editor with the athletic, but he's the one
that dug up this stat. So I want to go ahead and credit him for that.
that Peyton Manning's team scored 100 points two different times in the first three games
of the season, but never 103.
And, you know, when you're 38 and 29 and 41, in today's NFL, Zach, that's not so easy
to do.
And the cults are true.
I mean, you would have been laughed out of the room, I think, if you would have suggested
that the culture are going to score over 100 points in their first three games with Daniel
Jones as a start.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, especially in the nature of the NFL right now is we see a lot of low,
scoring games across the league.
You know, we've seen in the last couple of years, it's kind of been a defensive
like renaissance in the sense where the Fangio cover four has come back into style.
And this style has limited explosive plays for opposing offenses and just limited
scoring.
I mean, look at that Jaguars and Texans game that happened today.
That was an ugly, ugly, low scoring game.
Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers today was another ugly low scoring game.
The only time we really see it get out of hand is when defenses are scoring, like we
saw in the Vikings game today.
They got out of hand because the defense was scoring every single time for the Vikings.
But you rarely see an offense like this, where the offense is just not punting the ball.
Not like they're getting points on pretty much every drive.
And the crazy part is with how well they've played throughout these first three weeks on offense,
you could arguably say that the 100, the 103 points that they've scored is probably lower than what they should have scored because of the failed red zone trips.
They've had to start the year.
I mean, they were able to convince.
convert today, but those first two weeks, they left a lot of points on the board by not converting
in the red zone. So this could have easily been up to 110, 110, 115, 120 through a couple weeks,
but it just speaks to how good this offense is playing right now. And also how good the Colts
defense has been at getting turnovers and getting the ball back to the offense. The Colts
right now are, what, plus five in the turnover differential? And they only have one punt on offense.
That's a great recipe to average 34 points a game, a game in the NFL. My voice is going out because
I'm just screaming down there.
I think it was all from that Tyler Warren block on the fullback on the Johnson Taylor run.
But yeah, it's like when you have everything just working together like this, you have
complimentary football, your defense taking the ball away, your offense is just moving the ball
forward and getting into point range every single drive, you're going to be able to put up points
in the NFL.
So there's still some things to improve.
But overall, I think this offense has just been fantastic.
And again, I don't know how you.
slow them down right now like you stack the box they're going to run these play action boots
and force you to run commit against taylor and we're just going to hit the flats and get some
positive yards if you want to go man coverage across the board good luck covering alick pierce on a
vertical ball good luck i dare you the only way he couldn't catch it today is he got a concussion
halfway to the ground and it still kind of looked like a catch today i thought it was a catch too
yeah uh and then if you want to back up and cover because jones just threw for 200 yards on you
and a half or almost 200 yards and a half, then Jonathan Taylor is going to run crazy
in the second half of we've seen these first three weeks. So I think this Colts offense is
really good. I think they're a legit offense. And I think we're going to be saying this by
the end of the year as well. You know, I would love to say that the number of points is a reflection
on all the different rule changes since Peyton Manning has been in the game. But I can't
because there were some games today that were low scoring where defense is really dominated.
But if you don't punt and on a majority of drives, you go and score, you know, the points are just
going to accumulate. And right now, do we think that this offense has maxed out? Have they scratched
the surface of how good they're really going to be? I don't think so. I think what we see is
greater potential for this offense. Now, they have.
haven't, you know, had the turnover bug hit them and, for the most part, been healthy.
And that's probably the hardest thing to overcome is health injuries, things like that.
Turnovers they can sort of control.
Like I said earlier, they did drop a couple of passes, but they didn't miss a beat.
They came back to following play, and they were able to make a play.
But right now, they just have a confidence level that, that, you know,
they don't care who they're playing, you know, it's all about the level of execution, level of
competition does not matter. And when you have that belief as a player that if we do our jobs,
the way we're supposed to do our job, we're going to score and we're going to win. And I think
that's where the Colts are right now. Doesn't matter who they play. And that's especially
important, Alan, because I know you're new to the Colts beat here, but they've been a team the last
couple of years, Zach, you know this. They've played to the level.
They're, you know, they'll come out and beat the chiefs or something like that.
And you're like, wow, holy crap. And then, you know, the next week against, you know,
the Giants or something like we saw last year, you're like, what is this? What just happened?
How is this possible? So, you know, that confidence out. I wanted to talk about that too,
because, you know, you obviously have had playing experience, unlike Zach and I, as an offensive
player, what's it mean to you? Well, sorry, professional and collegiate playing experience,
I was an all-star in Little League, Derek.
You get out of here with this.
It's a tough defensive league in Virginia.
Those plays count.
Little League accounts.
I remember retraction after the show.
Yeah, I remember my little league stats.
What it means to an offensive player to have a quarterback that is just this in command?
Because it just feels like that confidence and that, you know, even when things go wrong,
even though obviously not much has gone wrong through these first three weeks for the Colts,
that everything's going to be okay type attitude has filled.
they're down to the rest of the group from the leadership of Jones.
Well, like LeBron James says on his commercial,
it means everything and then doesn't say anything else.
But, you know, there's a feeling that emanates down through the players
that if the quarterback is making plays,
then you feel obligated to make plays.
And if the quarterback is getting the ball to you and doing the things he's supposed to do,
then you feel that it's a must that you hold up your end of the bargain.
You know, I've been in situations where, like, when we had Warren Moon,
we could cruise a little bit because we knew at some point,
Warren was going to make a spectacular play somewhere down the line.
But then when Warren got hurt, we all collectively, you said,
we got to step up our games.
And we did that with a quarterback theme, Cody Carlson.
But all that did was get Cody Carlson a $3 million contract,
and people started saying that, you know,
Cody was better than Warren, which no way, no how.
But when you just get that feeling, it just emanates down.
You know, if the quarterback is executing to damn near perfection,
you can't help but try to sustain that level of excellence
because you get success, and success is contagious.
And, you know, confidence plus success means wins, and that's what's happening right now.
Yeah, and the big thing to make note of with Jones, too, is pretty much any quarterback that's making it to the NFL can operate when everything's smooth in front of him.
When the offensive line gives you four seconds, when receivers are open, where the first read is there.
And I think that on those aspects, Jones has been fantastic this year.
one area that I had massive questions about him coming into the year, what does he look like
on those plays where everything isn't perfect, where the offensive line is getting beat,
where receivers aren't open, where, you know, guys are dropping balls and you're behind
the sticks, there's a penalty and you're behind the sticks. And I had real questions about
that. But through three weeks, I don't have many questions about that anymore because he has
answered the call every single time. I mean, to just look at today where, you know, he hasn't
been much of a runner this year for the Colts. But we saw that scrambling ability on multiple
big plays and the Colts were able to steal
some points. I think it was on the first or the second
offensive drive in this one with that
incredible scramble drill that he had
on third and long to get them that first down.
That's one of those big plays. Again, that was like a third
and eight, third and nine, I believe is what it was.
Pressure up in the middle and on the outside.
He's able to get around, get out of that sack, and create
a 17-yard run. That's stealing points
for your offense. And it goes back to the
overall point. How do you get to 103 points
through three games? Well, that's how you get there is when you're
stealing points when you have those plays where you're going to be in situations where you should
typically be punting or like disaster happens with other players your quarterback needs to bail you out
and i think jones albeit the offense is playing at such a high level that jones hasn't had to bail them
out a ton of times but when he's had to this year he's answered the call so i mean i think any question
you've had about jones coming into the year i mean again i had a ton of questions about him coming
into the season most of them have been answered he's just playing great football like
even today where the stat line wasn't as gaudy as it was the last two weeks,
I thought he played some outstanding football today.
And he's a big reason why the Colts got another victory.
And the scrambles, the successful scrambles are important
because you want to get that on film,
because you want to get the opposing defensive coordinators thinking,
oh my God, he will run.
He won't just sit back there like a statue.
Do I need to employ a spy or do I play less man-to-man?
because he might, you know, withstand that wave of the rush and then get out and run and bust us for 20 yards.
So very, very important to put that on film.
And to me, he's just athletic enough.
You know, he's not the athlete that Anthony Richardson is.
And Cam Ward is another great athlete.
But at the quarterback position, you let your arm do the talking.
And then every now and then you just use your legs a couple times.
and that's just to confound the defensive coordinators around the league.
Yeah, and one thing I'm seeing in the comments here,
people are saying it's called Danny Diamonds.
I think that's what Rich Eisen said.
You guys can call, I'll call him whatever he wants.
If he comes out here and says, you want to call me the Savior, the chosen.
I'll call you whatever.
If you keep winning games for the Colts, I'll call you whatever the heck you want me to call you.
He's been great.
That's why I say Danny wins.
I call him Danny wins.
I like Danny wins.
Yeah.
And it's just when you have plays like that, like the 3rd and 7 plays, Zach,
the one that you're mentioning where you're stealing points.
It feels like it counts twice because it's got to be just so.
I know these guys are like, oh, next play, whatever, forget about it.
It's got to be so demoralizing.
The Titans had it.
I mean, you have them stop.
That's it.
And he just slips through your grasp.
And this isn't exactly prime Mike Vic here.
Like, yeah, Jones can move a little bit.
But for him to just kind of score away and he did that multiple times in the game.
And then in some cases stepped up and made a big throw.
You know, sometimes you have these guys, these quarterbacks that are able to allude and get free.
Like we saw it a little bit with Richardson and then he'd get free and then the ball would go 10 yards over somebody's head or it'd be an interception or, you know, whatever else.
He wouldn't be able to make the play.
And it feels like Jones is not only extending those plays and getting himself out of trouble, but then he's making a play on the other end, which just getting out of it is a win, but it's a double win to then get out of it and make the play.
Right.
And again, sorry, I'll say real quick, it comes down to these situations where the difference between scoring 30 plus points in the NFL and scoring under 20 or low.
20s is how you perform on third and long, how you perform in your two minute drills at the end
of games and end of halves. And he's answered the call on all of those, you know? So again, it's easy to,
I won't say it's easy, but it's easier in the NFL to score when everything is right in front.
You have the perfect play call. You have the perfect blocking and a wide open receiver. But when
the going gets tough on those third and longs that you try to avoid as much as possible, but they
happen because of penalties and because of sacks and whatnot, to deliver,
on those situations deliver at the end of the first half i know we didn't have many yards to go in
this one uh at the end of the first half because of that kicking decision by the titans but to get them
down to kicking a 30 30 yard kick before the half and giving your kicker a much easier shot than the
64 or whatever that the titans tried um that that's good quarterback play so again we can say like
oh yeah it's not sustainable to have this great success rate and yada yada yada he's going to have
turnovers but when the going has been tough for him so far this year he's delivered and
You have to commend a quarterback for doing it.
That's what makes a quarterback great.
And he's been great this year for the Colts.
Yeah, nothing breaks the heart of a defense more than to have someone they don't perceive as a scrambler,
scramble and make a first down because the defense is like, we get this guy.
We're off the field and our offense can get on.
But now we got four more damn plays we got to do.
And I'm already tired from, you know, using all my effort to.
to make this rush that I thought I was going to be able to tackle a guy.
So, I mean, that's what Danny did today was really break their heart
and, you know, keep the momentum on the cult side.
And like I said earlier, the cults never blinked.
It didn't matter what the downer distance was.
There was no panic.
There was no, I guess, urgency on their part because they just systematically
just went through what they normally do or what they have been doing for the past three weeks
and they know if they can execute, they're going to have success.
Yeah, and it's a confidence thing to.
I mean, I think you could tell the Colts aren't going to come out and say this,
but they knew that they were in control of this game.
And there was no reason to panic or feel a sense of urgency because why would we?
We're going to handle these guys.
And of course, they did.
There were some areas that fell short a little bit.
We'll talk more about some more standout performers as well.
We haven't even mentioned the guy that had the most electrifying play of the game.
And we'll talk about that when we come back.
Right here on the Colts Squad Show, don't go anywhere.
This episode brought you by Mazda's moving the game forward.
For those who believe it's not just about playing the game, it's about redefining it.
There are moments that do more that put points on the board for the Colts
and this week's moment that moved the game forward.
what an incredible run by Jonathan Taylor.
It was essentially a walk-off shot, made the game 31-13 at that point,
a spinning, slicing, dicing, God, I sound like Chris Berman when I said,
46-yard touchdown from JT.
I thought the best run of his career.
I know some people will talk about the walk-off against the Patriots in 21,
that electrified Lucas Loyal Stadium maybe given the stakes.
That was the biggest run of his career.
Today's was the most aesthetically a pleasing run.
Taylor's career. He was pinballing everywhere. And, you know, you talk about a guy that's on
it right now at his absolute apex. What a season, what a start to the season so far for
Jonathan Taylor. When you follow what moves you, the unexpected is only the beginning. And just
like there's more to every highlight, there's more to a Mazda vehicle. Mazda, move and
be moved. And we're back on the Colt Squad show. Indy has a pretty easy time with the Tennessee
Titans, 4120 to me.
move to three and oh. Thanks so much for joining us. We are your home for postgame recaps
all season long. I know some other outlets do recaps or shows or podcasts or whatever else.
I think we're the only one that does like this, this immediate right here, because I'm
just in my basement right now and this is what I would be doing for free anyway. But Zach Hicks
joins us. Alan Pinkett joins us. We may have Jake Arthur coming up a little bit later on today
from Nashville. He is covering the game for his outlet as well. And thank you, thanks so much for being
here. Let's talk about, you know, we always do studs and duds, and let's keep it on a happy
note. There are some duds and some areas and individual performers that I wanted to touch on
Zach, but, you know, I just mentioned it. Jonathan Taylor, you know, kind of a quiet start
to the game, that first red zone sequence, when they kind of ran him up the middle a couple
times, I'm like, Shane, come on, man, like, what are they doing here? Like, this is conservative,
this is boring. And then he just, you know, it was kind of like, take a bit, take a bit, take a bit,
and then big chunk
and Taylor ended up getting it
with that 46-yard touchdown run
but three more touchdowns today
and man
what a pace that he's already on
for the first three games of the season
I just think you're seeing a special player
at the absolute peak of his powers right now
is out of the Taylor
right which is my dog's excited
too he's a big big fan of Johnson Taylor
but yeah it's it's crazy to see
because usually running backs
don't get better when they get older
you know usually it's their first couple years the rookie contract especially nowadays that we don't
see guys as they get closer to 30 hitting the prime of their career and jonathan taylor it's like
he's already had his outstanding prime where he was the second place and offensive player of the
year back in 2021 first team all pro had you know a couple other like thousand yard seasons in his career
but i would say arguably right now this has been the the best we've ever seen jonathan taylor with the
Colts. And that even goes up against his, his 2021 season because it's not just the running game for him.
You know, we're seeing the, like, the first half today, he had, what, eight for 29 running the football, which, you know, it's a steady workload.
We're not really getting this too many, like, big kind of plays. We didn't have that one breakout, but we're seeing the past blocking be great.
the past for catching be great.
I think he got that first down on like a flat throw early in the second half
where it's like just catching that ball and working up the field is what you want to see
from your running back.
So yeah, I think he's just playing some great football right now.
And the one thing I love, and I know Alan's going to also just echo this, is this
offense doesn't stop feeding him.
Like it can be him averaging a yard per carry throughout the first half of a game.
But you know in the second half he's going to go for 80.
You know, he's going to go for 90.
Shane's second said it in his opening day press conference,
we're going to throw to score and run to win.
And he has been that this year in particular.
It has been throw all first half, open up the defense,
get the defense backed off,
and then it's all Jonathan Taylor in the second half.
We have seen it in all three games
where Taylor has just been a dominant force
in the second half of these games.
And a big reason why the Colts have been able to expand their leads
or come back against the Broncos last week
is because Taylor's been carrying a lot of the office.
offense in the second half. So credit to the Colts for just not, again, everything operational
is just so great right now because they can see something not working. And it's not like they'll
say like, okay, we have to go away from Taylor. Taylor only gets eight carries in this game. It's,
oh, it's not working in the first half. Don't worry. It'll pop. It'll pop. We have Jonathan Taylor back
there. It'll pop in the second half. And again, he goes from 28 in the first half to, I think he had
just under 100 today or just over 100. I can't remember if he got over that 100 yard mark, but just
a special player and he's having a special season and the Colts are feeding him the way that he needs
to be fed. Well, it's pretty common knowledge that if you're a full-time back, that you last about
six years. And what happens is you take so many hits that you do tend to lose some of your
athleticism, but you get smarter over that period of time. And to me, Jonathan Taylor runs,
runs smart. You know, he, when he gets in that little scrum where he's only going to gain
one or two yards, he protects himself. If he has the opportunity to spin out and get a couple
extra yards, you can. You got to pick and choose your times where you're going to use your
explosiveness or not. But the one thing he does have that not every running back has, and this
wasn't on his long touchdown run, but his short touchdown run is guys got to be able to
smell the end zone. Not every running back has that. You get that close to it. You know,
you got to fight and scratch and claw to get across that goal line and just not be denied. And he
definitely has that. You get down close down there. You just pretty much dare the defense to stop you
because if you're going to be that close, you might as well get in.
And I think he has, he has that smell the goal line type of mentality when he runs.
And, you know, to go along with his already good athleticism and great balance
and just the patience, because what happens in a game,
when you're getting stuffed for one and two, you're like,
damn it, give me that ball again, because if I just make one more,
little alteration, I'll bust this thing. And fortunately, the Colts don't put the running plays on
the shelf. I've been on teams where you try a couple runs and you get two yards or zero yards.
They won't pull that play for the rest of the game. But I think the Colts are smart to know
that these running plays, if you keep feeding them, eventually one's going to bust. And that
the proofs in the pudding. We've seen it two weeks in a row.
where he's, you're thinking, oh, there's no way he's going to get to 100 yards this game.
And then, boom, here he comes, you know, sub 50 or plus 50.
He gets a big run.
And that's just a valuable weapon to have, not to mention the fact that I'm sure that defense
doesn't appreciate getting hit on by Quentin Nelson and some of those other guys.
I mean, they're just getting hit every damn play.
And, you know, that wears on you, especially one of,
A back, you know, has a lot of leadness behind and is bringing some force, too.
One is eventually going to break.
So just happy to see that the Colts continue to depend on the running game because Coach Steichen is right.
You throw to score, but you've run the win.
Yeah, Russ Tucker pointed that out.
I don't remember which Titans defensive back it was, but Nelson was coming basically full speed at him.
And it was the ultimate like, you know, life.
is before your eyes type thing when you see 56 coming around the corner like that.
But, Zach, one other stud I wanted to get to, and I'll admit, you're more of the expert
than I am here in this area.
I'm basing this maybe more on vibes, but just kind of surface level, what I saw from the game.
It felt like you noticed that Charverius Ward was back there and made a couple of plays as well.
And it just changes the dynamic, I think, for that defensive secondary when he's on the field
as opposed to when he's not.
Yeah, I'm bummed that they got the holding call on him in that red zone because I really
wanted to see the whole clip to be like, okay, was he really holding there? Because outside of
that, I thought Charverius Ward was fantastic for the Colts. And in a day where, I think when
you're looking at this Colts defense, they did, they looked, I don't want to say they looked
overmatched or anything like that, but you could see that they're just not the most talented
unit back there. They're still figuring some things out. And they have, you know, a couple
guys that were, you know, Bachi was a special teamer in Cincinnati, Xavier Howard's coming off
of his couch from last season. It's not like the most, like, well-oiled machine back there.
on defense but chavarius ward looks like a different animal for this team he is just a pure
lockdown corner he was all over receivers all day i still think i even with that one pass breakup
being taken away because of his holding call i want to say he had like three pass breakups in this
game or it felt like he had even more because he was just involved on so many plays so yeah it just
helped i mean schematically you get one side of the field locked down and then to also have the
performance on top of it though where it's like if they're going to throw at him he's going to make a
play you know he had the huge pass break up early in the game on the in breaker to ridley off the blitz
he had another one on the outbreaker to ridley towards the goal line late in the game and then again
i thought he made a great play on that on that one where he got called for a hold but yeah he's
he's just been everything the two guys they paid on defense this offseason have been everything
the colts needed and i i struggle to see like where this defense could be without those guys because
they have just helped so much on that end of the team.
I would say that his biggest fan,
Chardavis' biggest fan, is Lou Anarumo,
because when you have a lockdown corner,
it just frees you up to do so many more things.
You can take a chance blitzing the safeties.
You can send five or six people
because you know he's got his guy on lockdown
and they're not going to be able to have success.
And there is such an incredible difference from this week to last week, you know,
in terms of defensive backplay.
And for that matter, the Titans didn't even try to go over the top when he was in.
It was only when Edwards got in there.
It's like, okay, let me, let's try a shot deep.
But a lockdown corner means so much to your defense because there's just so many more things you can do.
to the offense.
As we continue with studs and duds,
I was saving a look at this for the last segment,
but, you know, one of the standouts,
I think today may be in a bad way
in the fact that he didn't stand out at all,
considering the situation was Laatu, Latu.
Now, the context being coming off a hamstring injury, right?
And still, you know, this is a young player in year two.
I know people online saying, well, everyone's running out of excuses for Latu.
It's hard to not be disappointed with today's performance, though,
Zach, this was a game where you thought he was going to eat or you thought he should eat
and he did not eat very much today and, you know, blew some other, you know, staying outside
and things like, you know, just simple things as well.
It just wasn't a good game from the Atta Latsu.
Yeah, I've been critical of him, not critical, but I've been like on him about needing
a big season this year since the offseason.
But I will be a little bit more forgiving than I think most are for this game because
I think it was clear he wasn't healthy in this one still.
I think I want to say his snaps were probably at like 40 to 50% of the defensive snaps at best.
And typically he would be up around like 60 to 70% if healthy.
So you could tell he was on a little bit of a pitch count out there.
There were like legit multiple series in a row where it was just at Bucom and Typhon Lewis out there instead of him.
So I'm not going to go too hard on a guy who was probably hurt out there.
But, you know, we're going to have our full conversation, I think, in the last segment about just the past rush in general where you have a day where you have five sacks.
or four sacks, whatever it was, and it's not that, like, that's a great, that's a great number
to have.
You want to have the sacks, but there needs to be more pressure.
There just needs to be more pressure in a game like this.
We're going against multiple backup offensive linemen, a quarterback who was holding the
ball for like three and a half seconds.
And even if you're not going to get those sacks, if you're not going to have constant
pressure, you have to keep the rush lane integrity.
And that was really the biggest concern with the defensive line today was just in the run game
and also in rushing the past.
there's like quarterbacks getting outside the pocket runs get like bouncing outside from
from inside runs bouncing outside it's like we got to keep the outside integrity if you're not
going to win your rush at least keep your rush lane controlled and I think that was the bigger
concern right here for this game but I'm not going to get too hard on lot to for this one I think
he's still pretty hurt but it does kind of show again where it's like if lot two's not healthy
the colds aren't going to get a ton of pressure overall up front because teams are just going to
double team to Forrest Buckner, and the other guys are just not going to win their rushes
as consistently as you'd like. Well, you know, my takeaway was that he must not be healthy because
he was limited on snaps. And Taekwon did get a sack. And I think that he was at best serviceable
and just having him out here, having them out there on the field was better than not having him
out on the field. But overall, I think the defense did well.
Could there be more pressure, yes.
Could they do less bend but don't break?
Yes.
But they still managed to get four sacks and they still held this team down to 20 points.
So although I would like to be critical because I know how outstanding he is and how athletic he is.
And for him not to, you know, had a sniff at the quarterback is kind of disappointing.
But I think his time is coming.
We'll talk more about that pass rush room and moving forward what it may look like
and maybe be an Achilles heel for this team when this Colt Squad Show returns.
Stick around because we've got plenty more to come next.

Back for a final time here on the Colts Squad show alongside longtime NFL or a nerd name legend running back Alan Pinkett.
I'm Derek Schultz, Zach Hicks here as well, as you guys know, you every day or is know from the locked on Colts squad show.
It looks like the media avail ran a little bit late for Jake, so we won't have Jake Arthur on today's show.
He'll rejoin us on Wednesday's squad show.
So that's the cadence for us, live post game recaps, just like right now.
This isn't tape.
This is live.
You hear Zach's dog in the background.
You know, that's how live it is, right?
9 p.m. Wednesday as well for the Colts Squad show.
We'll get together as a group.
And then, of course, Jake and Zach have your great everyday Colts coverage,
Monday through Friday with a locked on Colts podcast as well.
But guys, you know, just to kind of tie a bow on the pass for us
before we look forward to next week for our first look at week four.
It just feels like an area, Zach, where they're going to have to be,
I think it goes without saying they're going to have to be a lot better,
but it's going to dictate what the ceiling is for this defense.
Like none of us are expecting this to be a great defense.
Like if you think this could be a top 10 offense and I would take a top 20 defense, honestly.
And I think the Colts would be a playoff team with that.
That's how much potential I think the offense has.
But if you're not going to get a little bit more at the pastoral.
You know, it felt like, and maybe this is a bad analogy, but I'm a baseball guy at heart.
It felt like one of those games where, you know, yeah, well, we had four or five sacks.
It felt like they hit four solo homers.
Yeah.
You know? And with runners in scoring position and the game on the line or, you know, the big plays, like the third down plays and things like that, I think for the most part, the Titans were able to come through and they weren't able to get home. And that's just, I know that you and Jake will have the film review coming up later on this week, but that's just the vibe that I got from watching the pass. It felt like a very empty, it felt like a Yankee Gakwe type production game from the Colts. If you longtime Colts fans know what I made. Yeah, I think it's one thing when a quarterback's getting the ball out in two seconds to not have a ton of sack.
or a ton of pressures because that's just the nature of what's happening.
But with Ward today, I'd be shocked that there was any quarterback who held the ball longer
than him this week.
There has to be, there's like no chance that anybody, like he was well over three seconds,
at least by my just watching it with my eyes today.
He was holding the ball a lot back there.
He was running around and scrambling in the backfield.
And in those situations, you have to bail out your secondary as a pass rush.
Like, it doesn't have to be where you come down with a sack every single play, but
keep your rush lane integrity, keep that guy in the pocket and make him panic and throw the ball from that area, not getting out of the pocket.
Because the second he breaks that pocket contain, all hell breaks loose for a defense.
We saw it with Bo Nix last week where Bo Nix had that 50-yard pass up the sideline to Marvin Mims because he broke contain.
We saw it on Charverius Ward's pass breakup that turned into a hold on him on that fourth down where Ward was able to buy all that time, hold the ball for four seconds.
and that's what led to Ward getting that holding call on him.
So, yeah, I don't think the pass rush is, like, awful because I think Lou Anurumo does enough with how he diversifies his looks, changes his fronts, brings sim pressure, and then brings a healthy dose of pressure as well.
I think he does enough to make the pass rush fine, but there are situations, like we say with Daniel Jones on offense, right, where it's like third and eight, these prime situations where you can't do all this, like, not gimmicky stuff, but like ahead of the sticks type.
type stuff where like again on offense it's like completing the short pass on defense it's
rushing with four you know like rushing before you got to be able to rush with four on third and
eight sit back and get off the field and you just need these guys to be better in the
situations it's tough for like I'm not going to sit here and say that like you know Tyquan
Lewis need to be an eight sack guy or something but Samson of youcom right he's getting paid
to what 12 million dollars this year 10 million dollars this year they need that kind of
production from him and it can't just be more shutout games like this or games where he's not
getting pressures and again it's a tough situation he's a 30-something year old guy coming off
in Achilles that we all warn the colts all off season that he's not going to get back to being that
10 million dollar guy but at the end of the day you are paying him to be that big time pass
rusher for you bang quitty pay a lot of money as well they picked up his fifth year option
paying him what like 10 million dollars as well those guys need to be able to win their rushes
especially against what Jono Jokwu, Blake Hans, today, like these need to be more productive
rushes because as of right now, and Jay saying this in our, in our comment section,
Grover Stewart's probably been their third best pass rusher this year.
Like Grover Stewart's actually been pretty good.
Like he has a pass rusher.
So I want to see a little bit better from the edge rush.
And, you know, it's still early.
And statistically speaking, ABUCOM should get healthier as the year goes along with that Achilles.
but we'll see.
It's something to certainly monitor,
and I think of this team sitting at 5 and 1,
4 and 2, 6 and 1,
whatever it is by trade deadline,
I think you seriously consider making some calls
and getting another guy in here at Edge,
but it's still early.
We're still trying to figure out
what this defense can be,
so not going to panic too much.
We're sitting at 3 and 0.
You know, we can't cry too much about this,
but it's certainly something to monitor
going forward with this team.
And JTT was inactive today,
so he wasn't going to have an opportunity
to rush to pass.
I look at it this way.
Cam Ward has played a lot of football,
but this is only his third game professionally.
And I think what the Colts did in this regard
was a great job of just squeezing the pocket,
having the pocket sort of collapse on him.
No, they didn't have the dynamic pass rush.
But you could tell, even though he held onto that ball,
it's like, okay, I'm standing in quicksand, you know, so I think they did a good job of putting
just enough pressure on him to hopefully create an errant throw.
But, I mean, we can tell this dude is going to be good, and he's got a rifle for an arm.
And even though he has played a lot of football, he hasn't seen the game at this particular speed.
So, you know, I think it was good that they gave him this.
the illusion that he had time, but in the meantime, they were squeezing that pocket
and in doing so, we're able to get four sacks.
Yeah, and I think the overall plan of attack for the defense today was great.
It was the perfect plan of attack that you needed for this offense.
It's, hey, they have a young quarterback back there with a bad offensive line.
What we're going to do is any pure passing situation, we're going to show pressure.
Even if we're not bringing pressure, we're showing pressure on every single situation,
and we're going to change that look for him as much as possible.
And then when it came to their four-man rushes, we're going to have our guys just bullrushing,
bull rushing, getting that depth, and then going from there.
My issue more so with the defensive ends in particular comes when you're playing this type of
plan of attack, you bull rush, keep that guy off your chest plate, and then the second that
quarterback starts to move, you shed whichever way you need to go.
And you keep in mind that you need to keep that outside contain.
Because if you shed inside, because he takes one step forward and you lose that contain,
Again, it's all that grass out there.
You'd rather have him stepping up into Grover and Buckner
than sliding out where there's nobody out there on the outside.
So, you know, if I have any complaints about the defense,
it really isn't anything to do with the scheme or the approach to this game.
I thought this was the perfect approach for this game.
Make Cam Ward have to go 15 plays on you
because this Titans' offense is going to shoot themselves in the foot more often than not.
Like they did, they're going to commit penalties.
They're going to throw pick sixes.
They're going to take bad sacks.
So, like, I love the plan of attack today.
I thought it was such a veteran coach just knowing how to win a game.
But I do think that overall from a player perspective,
we need to see a little bit more from these players.
I thought Lewis had some good reps,
but keeping that outside contained,
Ebukom, keeping the outside contained.
Xavier and Howard avoiding the pass interference or the holdings in the end zone yet again
that we saw in this one.
The linebacker play just needing to get a little bit better.
I think the overall play from players on this defense can be better to match how good.
I think this scheme was and this plan of attack was.
Well, and I think it's good for you to be able to point out some of the faults
because sometimes you can get full of yourself.
You know, you're 3 and 0 now.
You know, should I start booking rooms wherever the Super Bowl is?
Because we're 3 and 0, no.
You've got to stay on your game.
And, you know, Zach, you sound a little bit like a coach because they're going to point out all
of these things, you pointed out. Because if you don't think you can get any better, then,
you know, you've already lost. You've got to go into each game thinking, I need to improve.
In fact, that's sort of my mentality is, don't tell me how good I am. Tell me how I can get better.
And so I'm sure that these coaches are going to point out to mistakes, point out to shortcomings,
you know, and try to achieve what is unachievable, which is that perfect game.
Yeah.
Only a couple minutes left here, guys, but I'm looking at, I was looking at the
week four schedule and Eagles are playing the Buccaneers and both of those teams at
three and O.
Rams had about the most heart-wrenching way to possibly lose a runback block kick to
lose to the Eagles, but this is a very, very good Rams team.
And I think clearly, guys, the biggest test of the season, especially considering that
you're going all the way out there. I mean, this is a season where the Colts are going to have
to go to California twice and Germany. So I think, you know, weighing the context of where the
Colts go from here, this is a slate that I think contextually is going to be challenging, not just
the fact that you have to play the Rams, but the fact that you have to make these multiple trips
out west and these long trips out there. But, Zach, I'm fascinated to see what they're going to
do next. Yeah, absolutely. And, you know, as a player or as a coach, you can never think this way.
But me as a fan, I can certainly think this way. We're kind of playing with house money at the
moment when it comes to this upcoming game where this upcoming game is an NFC opponent on the road
pretty good team and you've already kind of clinched September as being a winning month for you
so this should be the game where it's like again you don't want your guys to come out here playing
with nothing to lose and and all these like but like for me it's it's really just a game where go
out there and just throw your best punch at a good team you know go out there and and show that you're
for real like they have these first three games uh and and do what they've been doing but for me
as a fan, it's kind of one of those where, like, I go into a Sunday just breathing, like, a lot more calm, you know, bringing a lot more calm because it's like, you know, we've been off to a great start this year. I know this team's going to come out and play well. We're playing with House Money currently. But if you come out of this game with a win, a road game in the NFC against a good Rams team with a good quarterback and good offense, I mean, we might be having to get more optimistic on this show. I feel like we're already really optimistic right now. But I think because they set themselves up well right now,
this Rams game again every every game is a must win you want to win every game but this Rams game isn't like a must way like you have to win this game or else like you're sitting pretty well right now if you're going to drop any NFC game's fine but heck I want to keep this thing going right now like I said at the beginning of the show Derek let's match that 09 Colts team let's get to 14 and 0 15 and no then we can get some some Richardson snaps at the end of the season when we're already undefeated and wrestling our starters but but yeah no I think they set themselves up so well to where like you can kind of
of weather the storms of some of these road trips that they had to take this year.
Yeah, I want to see the 14 and 0-0 Colts and 0-14 Zach Hicks pre-game predictions.
Oh, yeah.
That's the combination of those two things.
Yeah, I'm ready to go all year without getting a Colts prediction, right?
I solidified myself after week one where I picked against the Colts and they won where it's like,
I'm going to do this every week.
We'll see.
We'll see.
I'm o' and three right now.
Yeah, I'll tell you this.
The players savor a situation like this, this upcoming game against the Rams, because the players
don't live in a silo, all right? They read the paper. Of course, I'm dating myself when I say
they read the paper, but I'm sure all week long they're going to be told how good this Rams
team is. All the punders are going to say how good the Rams are and how exciting that is
for a player to be able to go up against that type of competition, to go into a situation
where they've got an opportunity to prove that these three wins were not a fluke, that they
are for real. That just creates more excitement for the
player. And I think you'll get a good showing from the Colts. It's going to be a great one.
