A bit of sports soccer in Indianapolis for many years. I'm joined by legendary third name running back. Alan Pinkett and you every dayers know Zach Hicks, our resident film buff
Starting point is 00:01:02 from Locked on Colts and Jake Arthur our boots on the ground is literally on the ground as we speak at Lucas Loyal Stadium right now and he will join the show at a time of his convenience here once he wraps up some of the postgame stuff and getting audio and talking to a very happy Colts locker room, I'm sure, after a 33 to 8 beatdown. Today we're going to be talking about
Starting point is 00:01:20 any super impressive season opener against the Dolphins, including Daniel Jones's encouraging debut as QB, one, Shane Sykin and Lou Anirumo both simultaneously being in their bags for four quarters. That was really impressive. Other standout performances of which there were many and what this performance could mean for the Colts going forward. But guys, before we even get started with Daniel Jones, look, we all know that CBS ran the graphic over and over again. We all know about the season opening, losing skid.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Zach, you have never covered a season opening win for the Colts ever. It goes all the way back to 2013 and Terrell Pryor and the Raiders and now with that in the rearview mirror, I think before we even get started with Daniel Joe's and all that, not only to win, but to look like this in a season opener, what did it mean for you? It means a lot, man. You say 2013, I was a sophomore in high school back when that happened. I'm nearly 30 years old now. I have a wife. I have a house. A lot of things have changed since the last time the Colts have won a season opener. Heck, I didn't even care for the Colts back then. I was a Washington football fan back then. So, yeah, this was just awesome. to see and it wasn't just like like I would have taken anyone today I would have taken the ugliest I would take a three to nothing win where nobody moves the ball and it's just the worst play you've ever seen on both sides of the ball but to win like this where it is just a butt kicking from start to finish this is how you want to start a season I don't care who
Starting point is 00:02:46 you're playing I know the Miami Dolphins are look dreadful today and part of that is on the cold part of that is on the dolphins just not looking like a normal NFL team out there but I don't care. You know, in the NFL, these teams are so close together. You could be the worst team in football, can be the best team in football, win by multiple scores if you really are above this team you're playing, and if you really have an opportunity like this.
Starting point is 00:03:08 So for the Colts to come out here, win like this, of all ways to break the streak, I think this was fantastic. And I said it before we started recording here, Derek. This is the fourth time in the Shane's second era with the Colts. Out of 35 games that they've won a game by more than one score, the first time since December. of 2023, all of last year, every single win was only by one score. So to come out here
Starting point is 00:03:32 and win by their biggest differential in the Shane Steichen era, that speaks volumes to where they want to be this year. They wanted to be a win now team. They come out here and they beat the crap out of a team today. It's all you could hope for in week one. So I love to see it today. Well, goal number one, win your first game. And it meant more because they haven't won their first game in 12 years. So I can just imagine the excitement in that locker room. Goal number two, when you're home games, you have to make that stadium a place where opponents fear coming into. So they accomplished two things. And, you know, as a player, you look at the preseason and all the work you put in. And it's such a good feeling when, you know, it's, it's, it's
Starting point is 00:04:25 all comes together in that first game. It's just a combination of all the things you worked on, all the offseason worked. Unfortunately, a season is not just one game. It's a long season. But to come out with a victory on that first outing just means so much and starts to build that confidence. And confidence is what they're going to need because you see who's coming in here next week. Yeah. And you just think back just for a little history lesson now that we can finally turn the page. You think back to some of those performances, like in 2015, when the bills turned Andrew Luck into a pinata. Chuck Bagano bungles the final minute in 2016 against the Lions, 2017, the Scott Tolzee game, which was a total joke in L.A. They got run off the field
Starting point is 00:05:07 in that game. And then the Texans tie. And, you know, there are so many bad memories to have just a good, it was a beautiful day in Indianapolis. The roof, the window was open. Jim Mersey gets honored a halftime. It really was like the perfect four hours for Colts fans. And boy, did they deserve it. Let's start with Daniel Jones, guys. There are a lot of people that deserve credit for today. But what a tremendous stat line from him in his starting debut. 22 of 29, 272 yards, a throwing touchdown. He accounted for three overall. I'm sorry to the Jonathan Taylor fantasy owners, by the way, two touchdowns. But Zach, sharp and efficient. I get there, there's always things to nitpick. There was a clear dropped I&T in there, right? Jones is usually
Starting point is 00:05:47 good for one of those per game, but you could not have scripted a debut performance better than this one, I don't think. Yeah, I think a lot of what we said going into this season with Daniel Jones was that the Colts want to be a ball control offense. They want to steadily move up and down the field, complete the open passes when they're there, get the ball to the checkdowns when it's not there. And I think the biggest thing for me, though, with Daniel Jones was could he make those couple big throws he would need to make a game where, like, yes, you can get the ball out to Tyler Warren in space. Yes, you can get the ball to the checkdown to Jonathan Taylor or an open Michael Pittman Jr. Those are things that we think he can do. But when he has to
Starting point is 00:06:22 really drive into a pass down the field when he has to take advantage on a vertical plane or on a big outbreak or on third down or a double move by Michael Pittman Jr. on second and 20 in the red zone. Like what are the what are the outcomes going to be when it comes to Daniel Jones on those plays? And today he performed on all of those plays. Every big moment that he had, he delivered a big time throw. The throw to Tyler Warren early in the game. The throw to Alec Pierce down the left sideline. The big double move to Michael Pittman Jr. Those couple chances where the Colts offense needed him to make a big time play. He did. So the stat line is fantastic. I think a lot of that stat line is because Shane Steichen had such a great game plan to get guys open. But to give Daniel
Starting point is 00:07:04 Jones the credit that he deserves when there were opportunities where he needed to make a play as a quarterback, getting out of the pocket, pushing the ball down the field, getting it in between tight windows. Those three or four plays, he was outstanding. So Daniel Jones, there's nothing negative you could say about him in this game. He came out here to a new situation off of a terrible, terrible year he had last year just in terms of everything he had to go through, won the job this offseason, came in here in week one and made some outstanding plays. So Daniel Jones, again, I've been a doubter all offseason for sure. And I even came around, like, later in the offseason of him being a good game manager. But what he showed today, again, push the throw to Alec Pierce, the throw to
Starting point is 00:07:44 Michael Pittman Jr. The throw to Tyler Warren. That's what you need to see from QB1. So I'm not going to sit here and poo poo on his game because it was great. It was awesome out there. He did everything the Colts needed to get the win. He operated the offense exactly the way it needed to be operated. And then he converted a couple of Red Zone opportunities. So Daniel Jones, hats off, man. This is the type of performance he needed in week one to give everyone the optimism. Colts, according to that poll with the athletic, Colts fans were the least optimistic among all fan bases in the NFL. This is how you do a statement, though, to show that, hey, let's be optimistic about this year. We are win now. We are ready to go. And Daniel Jones
Starting point is 00:08:21 looked really, really solid out there today. Well, I'm getting more familiar with Coach Steichen. Wasn't that familiar. And this is my first time, basically cheering and working for the Colts. But after that game, you can understand why he has Daniel Jones starting at quarterback. He has a system where he wants the ball to come out quick. He wants his athletes to catch the ball and make plays in space. But the ball coming out on time is of utmost importance. And that's the one thing that Daniel Jones could deliver is getting the ball out. And even when he was pressured, he was still able to get the ball out.
Starting point is 00:09:05 So there wasn't that drama that you've had the past two years with, you know, short passes being overthrown or, you know, all the different mechanical mistakes that an Anthony Richardson made. You had a guy who could be efficient in the backfield and a guy who, to me, looked like he was in control and his confidence just gained series after series after series. And I like the fact that they went for it on fourth down because nothing builds your confidence more as a team, as an offense, than going for it on fourth down. That is truly showing that the coach trust the players to deliver, and they were able, what,
Starting point is 00:09:47 three for three on fourth down, which speaks volumes. So give a lot of credit to Daniel Jones for being able to run Stan Seichen's system efficiently and get the victory. Yeah, I don't think that we needed him to be a superstar for this Colts team to work this year. And today I wouldn't say he was some superstar quarterback, but he operated at a really high level within this offense. And again, the couple plays he needed to make were just great. So look, let's just carry this momentum into next week and let's keep going. This was a great
Starting point is 00:10:19 start for Daniel Jones and for the Colts this season. Yeah, and just one of 17, right? It's a long season. But that said, and I think Jake was the one that said this on a previous squad show, Shane Stuyken really stuck his neck out here with this decision. This was Shane betting on himself, right? So you push the chips in on the table yourself. You need the first impression to go like it did today because he had a lot of doubters, including the people in this room. You know, we weren't the only ones that were doubting it, but we were thinking ourselves, Daniel Jones, is that the horse that you want to bet on here? And again, just one game, but good for Scyken for making, you know, this was the blueprint.
Starting point is 00:10:55 Zach, as you said, that he wanted to lay out. And he thought he was confident that he could execute it with Jones as the quarterback. And boom, you know, one for one so far. Yeah. And it was everything that the Colts needed to start the season when they made that bet with Daniel Jones, when they made the bet why I bring in Xavier and Howard, by going out and being aggressive and free agency, by getting Lou Anna Rumo in here, this was what, like, they were saying, we need to win this year. And everything looked like it paid off in this one game here.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Again, there's 17 games. One game doesn't define your season. But what a great statement to start off the year, for sure. But yeah, this was everything the Colts needed. And this was kind of, again, the type of game the Colts want to play this year, where it is we're going to pass to get that lead early and then we're just going to grind out the game we're going to control possession we're going to have our running backs moving downhill we're going to be just chugging out two quarterback sneaks for touchdowns in this game that is some old school football right there just just getting your big guys in front pushing ahead for touchdowns like this is the kind of game that they want to play this year we're going to trust our defense we're going to trust our early passing and our in our work
Starting point is 00:12:00 that we're doing in the week leading up to a game and then once we get that lead on you we're going to be the most boring football team of all time. We're just going to steadily kill that clock, steadily turn out those wins. And we saw it today. The life was taken out of this Miami Dolphins team, especially when those turnovers were turning into points for the Colts on offense. And they were able just to grind out this game until all the way in the fourth quarter when the game was over.
Starting point is 00:12:24 So, yeah, this is the type of style of the Colts want to play this year. Jones operated perfectly well. And again, like what you said here, Derek, Shane Steichen probably called the best game of his career. Like Shane Steichen's play calling today, I mean, there were what, maybe three to four completed passes, like the ones I mentioned, three to four completed passes where Jones really had to work for the completion.
Starting point is 00:12:47 A lot of these were wide open players. And he showed something he's never really shown against this type of defensive coach. So, I mean, Shane Steichen, Daniel Jones, and Tyler, I mean, Tyler Warren, we're going to get to. But those were the guys that carried this offense forward today, and we're mostly responsible for the 33 points. points. And you talk about you don't care if they're boring. But when you look at the stat line, 27 first downs is not boring compared to Miami with 12. Holding the ball for over 38 minutes
Starting point is 00:13:20 as an offense is not boring. That means you're really putting the pressure on the Miami offense to perform. And it's allowing, you know, you get that little lead. Now that defense for the Colts can pin their ears back and come after the quarterback, you know, so they put the dolphins in a position where they, they, it made them panic a little bit. And the Colts just showed control throughout the entire game. Yeah, and let's get this out of the way. I mean, a lot of people saying, oh, it's the dolphins. Look, the Miami Dolphins might be the most permanently average professional sports organization in all of American pro sports. But to beat them down, I mean, Zach, and Alan and I were talking about this beforehand.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Guys, the Colts needed like 72 plays and 10 fourth down conversions to beat the Patriots last year, okay? The Patriots. They needed a fourth quarter drive to beat the Aaron Rogers Jets. All right? So to come out and beat a team by 25 points and it wasn't even as close as the final score and to out gain them two to one and really are out getting them three to one in the moments that mattered, even though this game felt like it stopped mattering by the end of the second quarter.
Starting point is 00:14:27 I mean, you got to take that kind of performance and run with it. I don't care who it is. And, you know, there's a good chance here, Zach, that the dolphins still kind of remain in the playoff because that's who they always are. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised at all 7, 8, 9 games because that's what they always do. And they could win zero games this year. Like, they could be the worst team in football. They could be the worst team in NFL history, win zero games this year. But again, this Colts team coming off a year last year where they played backup quarterbacks in, what, six to seven of their starts last year?
Starting point is 00:14:57 They had Tim Boyle playing against them in a game. zero wins by more than one score last year, despite playing against all those backup quarterbacks and reserve players. So I don't care who they're going against. They were up 30 to nothing at one point. They were a Kenny Moore slip in the red zone away from shutting out a team.
Starting point is 00:15:15 So, like, I don't care who they're beating by this much. Just show that you are above this team and beat down on them, and that's what they did. So, like, this could be the worst team in football. Cool, the Colts made it seem like that, for sure today. Like, they showed that maybe that's what it could be because of how big the difference was on Sunday here. So, again, I don't care who they were playing.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Like, if you're winning by 25 points, you're doing something right. Well, I'll give you just, it's not just my opinion. I want to say it's fact, but I hear all the time about some teams that are good, some teams that are bad. Having played in the NFL, I can tell you, there are no bad teams in the NFL. There's only teams with bad records. Every single team has studs on them. And Miami has six Pro Bowl players last year. I know this year is different, but there are no bad teams in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:16:12 You know, so you get what you earn in the NFL. You, you, and look, most games are decided by one score or less. So if you can blow a team out, then you are clicking on all cylinders. And today was just the question. Colts day to do it. They frustrated that Miami offense. It was just a, like you said in the beginning, Derek, a total beatdown. We've seen Colts performances carried by only the offense or only the defense, but this was a group effort. And we'll sing the praises of one much maligned coach and another that just got fired last year. That's next on the Colts squad show.
Starting point is 00:16:54 This portion of the locked on Colts squad show brought you by Price picks, the daily fantasy app where making the right call can actually pay off. Starting point is 00:17:55 And we're back on the Locked on Colts Squad Show. He dominates Miami in a 33 to 8 win. Do you either of you guys see is 338 a scoreagami? Oh, it feels like it should be a scoreagami. Yeah, we got to check the account there for sure. If somebody on YouTube or whatever can chime in, we've got a lot of commenters and thanks so much for watching the live stream here, let us know because 33 to 8 does not seem like kind of an abnormal score for sure.
Starting point is 00:18:20 But, you know, I just mentioned, you know, a guy they got fired last year, Lou Aneromo, albeit after a very successful run with the bank, coaches get fired all the time and whatever it's not necessarily an indictment on them i just used it in the tease right he was fantastic today um seemed to really have two and that dolphin's offense in a blender we already saying the praises of shame stuyken as well but you know two things that i actually kind of wanted to focus on too i know we talked about daniel jones and the offense man that that new look because that's what it is new look offensive line really really good football today and jack it's so important for this team to take the ball it's
Starting point is 00:18:55 important for any defense to take the ball away, but especially, I think, for this team and for the offense to then turn those opportunities into points the way that they did. You couldn't have asked for anything more. Yeah, we have 45 other players we can sing the praises of in this game. So I feel like every Colts player just went crazy in this game. But talking about the defense, I mean, this was such a statement game for Louana Rumo. It takes, it's tough to get fired in the NFL. It's tough to get cut. It's tough to get fired. It's tough to lose your job in the NFL. And you have to go through lot of mental aspects. I mean, Alan, I'm sure that you have a lot of stuff to say about just what it's like as an NFL person in the league having to build yourself back up from stuff like
Starting point is 00:19:35 this. And for Luana Rumo, a guy who was at such a pinnacle in the NFL of leading a defense to the Super Bowl and being a couple plays away from winning a Super Bowl to now being the reason why the Bengals couldn't make the playoffs last year. Defense was so awful. Now he gets this second chance with the Colts. And I mean, what a start for for this defense, this Colts defense against a Miami offense where, look, they're not a perfect offense. Their offensive line is not great. They were pretty banged up coming into this game.
Starting point is 00:20:05 But it's still an offense that has Tua, who has been a pro bowler multiple times his career, Tyree Kill, Jalen Waddle, Devon A. Chan, and then Mike McDaniel, who again, you can say all you want about him as a head coach, but they've had a pretty good offense the last couple of years. And you're getting them in week one in a dome where it's not the bad weather game. like there were a lot of things like that were kind of like a recipe for disaster when it came to you know the Colts defense being able to be successful but what we saw was Luan Arumo was going out of his way to pinch that middle of the field make those over the middle throws difficult for this offense and so the first interception to assailed it because Nick Cross was attacking underneath on that throw and he sailed it over top trying to get overcross got through it right to bind them and then dropping lautu lot to into coverage you know we always yell about dropping a pass your best pass rushers into coverage but dropped them right over the middle of the field threw it right to them for another interception. We got some cool blitz mixups in there too with Nick Cross and Kenny Moore getting some wide open hits on the quarterback. So just
Starting point is 00:21:07 just an A plus game from Luanna Roe. This is how you come in here. Again, we've had a lot of stagnant defenses with the Colts and Chris Ballard's tenure from Gus Bradley and Matt Eveflus. And I don't hate them as defensive coordinators, but that kind of defense is moving away from the trend in the NFL. So to get this from Luana Ruma, where we're getting defensive ends dropping into coverage, we're getting,
Starting point is 00:21:27 I saw a late rotation where Kenny Moore dropped out to deep safety, and Nick Cross came over to play a linebacker. We saw dime looks. We saw pressures off the back side from the strong safety, the nickel corner.
Starting point is 00:21:38 We saw all-out blitzes. We saw sim pressures. This was such a diverse and fun defensive attack, and it paid off like big dividends. They had those three turnovers so early in the game that the Coltrade were able to put this game away.
Starting point is 00:21:50 So, you know, we can sing all the praises of every player on this team and every coach right now. But Luana Rumo, such a statement game for him, too, just coming out here, holding a team to eight points. And it could have easily been a shutout. Like, it could have very, very easily been a shutout. Lou An Rumo called a near-perfect game in this one.
Starting point is 00:22:07 It's hard to add anything to what you say other than creating three turnovers. That's huge. You know, one turnover in a game can be huge to create three. and then on top of it, put your offense in a position to get points off of those turnovers. The one thing I can say about the defense is just the pressure they were able to apply to Tua, the selection of blitzes that they were able to come with. You know, it was weird seeing so many strong safety and corner blitzes coming there, but they were timely.
Starting point is 00:22:47 It's like he knew exactly, and Aruma knew exactly what time to dial up to correct blitz. But overall, a great performance that was, you know, the post defense showed so much energy in their play. And, you know, here's why you like to have a lot of veterans, because they can usually get down that system a lot faster. you can't say enough about the corners the way they played because they pretty much locked down the outside. And for Tua, that defense just caused enough confusion to make him hesitate just for a second. And that's a lot of times, that's all you need. By the way, thanks to Scott and Elliot, not a scurigami, Patriots Raiders in 2017 was a 33 to 8 game. So you know, you never know in the NFL, right? It's hard to do. But, Al,
Starting point is 00:23:41 Alan, one thing I do know, your old school, and you had mentioned this before we started the show today, you got to love that time of possession, don't you? 38, 43 for the Colts to 2117 for the Dolphins. And, Zach, you mentioned the ball control aspect of it. But, you know, Alan, the other thing that plays into that, I'm going through the drive chart here. And the dolphins had the ball five plays, two plays, eight plays, six plays, seven plays. You know, the defense was turning them over and getting them off the field. then the Colts are coming through with 7, 9, 10, 14 plays on their scoring drives as well. And, you know, it followed the script that Chainsstike and wanted. Well, it was great balance because, you know, of the 27 first downs, 14 were by the pass. 11 were by the rush. So that just lets you know you're beating them every way you can.
Starting point is 00:24:30 The one thing I'll say is, you know, for the most part, the Colts played ahead of the sticks. Every year there's a phrase that gets adopted into the lexicon of the NFL. And behind the sticks and ahead of the sticks is one of those latest ones. I remember when there's one year as set the edge, set the edge. I heard every commentator say, set the edge. And, you know, back in my day, we didn't call it the edge. But it's a great way of explaining it. But the bottom line is there was balance in the offense.
Starting point is 00:25:05 and you got plays from all your players. I mean, and I mean, I didn't, I didn't see Pittman in the preseason, you know, so I was wondering how he was going to be, but oh, fantastic. And then the addition of the tight end, you know, is also, like I said, in the preseason, you want that tight end because that's the person who's going to grind out a lot of those first downs most of the time because he's a bigger target, harder to cover. and you can throw short passes, and he's going to turn it into a sizable game. But then, you know, Jonathan Taylor can't say enough about him, too.
Starting point is 00:25:45 Ran hard, looked like a Pro Bowl running back, and, you know, was able to add, you know, just another dimension to that offense with the passing. So I think today they played ahead of the sticks. They were on schedule. That's another one of those phrases that they, they've added to the NFL. They were on schedule for the most part. It just was a dominating performance on offense.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Yeah, and I really want to add to that because staying ahead of the sticks is such an important aspect to this season because one of my biggest question marks with Daniel Jones is when they get into those third and tens, when they get into those third and 12s, like those got to have it plays where your star quarterbacks make that big play for you. Can Daniel Jones do that? And we saw in this game the Colts did a great job of keeping the third downs into very manageable or at least if the third. downs were like third and eight or third and nine getting it to a fourth and one getting it to a fourth and two an
Starting point is 00:26:40 opportunity to go forward on that fourth down and get that for to get that first down in a very manageable situation but again to daniel jones's credit when there were the couple moments where they got backed up because of a sack or backed up because of a penalty i think it was the the touchdown to pitman he got sacked right before that play to knock it back to yeah second 20 just outside the red zone what did he do he delivered a strike for a touchdown so those couple moments where jones had to make those off-schedule plays, those plays where they were not getting ahead of the sticks, he made them. So that's, that just shows you just how complete this game was for the Colts because their game plan again was we're going to make sure that we are in third and
Starting point is 00:27:19 manageable, fourth and manageable if we need to be, and give our quarterback a chance to just get the ball out quick, hit, hit, you know, a scat protection running back, hit Michael Pittman Jr. on a little hitch route or something so we can get those first downs and keep the ball moving. but even the couple times where the Dolphins did the right thing and pushed the Colts off schedule, Daniel Jones made those couple big plays that he needed to make or there was that defensive holding as well after the Colts had those two holdings
Starting point is 00:27:44 that knocked them back to first and 30. So they got a little benefit there. But overall, yeah, this shows just how much of a complete game it was because the Colts had their plan of attack and any moment where it also got pushed off slightly, they still converted. They still made the big plays. They still were able to get points.
Starting point is 00:27:59 All seven drives in this game were points for the Colts. and they even kind of let the foot off the gas a little bit. I think they could have easily put up a couple more scores. They had one where they had a clear DPI in the end zone that would have given them another touchdown. Jones could have had three QB sneak touchdowns. He could have been up there, which Jaylen hurts in terms of just the QB sneaks to get the touchdown.
Starting point is 00:28:20 So, man, that was just fun. Again, just a complete game. We have 30 more minutes to talk about how complete this game was, and I'm excited to. But everything we say about this, it was like the Colts had answers for everything. And it was just a very, very complete game. Yeah, it kind of shows where they were, guys, that that drive before halftime, I think very clearly Shane Steichen was playing it conservatively. And normally, I'm apoplectic, Alan, when it's like third and two or something like that
Starting point is 00:28:47 and you're just kind of handing off and running a little jar or whatever, you're not going for points because I'm big like points, points. Step on their throat. All gas, no brakes. Like, that's how I am. And most of the time, Stuyken is like that. I mean, this is a man that went for three, fourth downs today, right? so I'm not trying to paint him as not aggressive.
Starting point is 00:29:03 But the Colts were just in so much control of that game. Like you could tell he was completely comfortable just getting the three there. And I think he knew even at that point, hey, these guys aren't touching us today. Well, I can tell you this. An offensive line, you know, when you're third and two and you run the football, that just shows the offensive line that you have trust in their ability to move to football. You know, and like we said, 11 first down. running the football, that does a lot for the confidence of the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:29:36 And so running is going to be a big part of this offense. And, you know, I think everybody came out of the game feeling like we thought we could execute this game plan. But then when you actually go out and do it, it means that, you know, there's the sky's the limit to what you can do. Yeah. And we have, you know, so much more to still talk about in this. And we'll probably talk about guys who are question marks, I'm sure, coming up.
Starting point is 00:30:00 But on the O line, Tanner Bordellini and McInsolvis, I mean, I didn't have to hear a negative thing about them throughout the entire game from the, from like, oh, this pressure was given up by them, this sack was given up by them, two guys that were question marks going against a really good interior with the Miami Dolphins. They just spent a top 20 pick on a defensive tackle. Also have Zach Seeler in there as well. McEnsovus and Tanner Bordellini paved the way in the ground game and were pitch perfect in the past blocking department. So again, just the complete game. even the two guys we had question marks for. They were outstanding in this one. Segment three will usually be when we go through the good and bad,
Starting point is 00:30:37 but it's pretty much straight A's or high B pluses for the cults. We'll give flowers to some true individual standout performers, and then we'll nitpick a bit because there's always stuff to nitpick. That's next on the Colt Squad Show. We're back on the Locked-on Colts Squad Show, a big win for the horseshoe helmets today, 33-8 in
Starting point is 00:32:24 their home opener, a beautiful day in Indianapolis and a great day to honor. I mean, certainly Jim Mersay would have been proud with the performance today. He probably would have given one of those big rousing locker room speeches as well where he just wants to hand game balls to every single person that's in the room. A couple of individual performers, let's kind of keep the good train. We're going to nitpick here in this segment, too. There's always, like I said, there's always stuff to nitpick. But let's kind of keep going with the individual performances.
Starting point is 00:32:46 And this guy made a name for himself right away. I don't know. Maybe I should start with Alan because Tyler Warren is just going to be Allen's guy for the rest of the year. Like he is the Tyler Warren guy. So, Alan, we'll start with you. Your guy, right away, you were like, darn. Here he is. NFL time for him. There was no learning curve involved. First drive right
Starting point is 00:33:04 away. I think he had three catches. Yeah. And, you know, the announcers in the game actually made mention of the fact that tight ends in the Colts offense last year only had 39 receptions. Tyler Warren had had seven receptions today for 76 yards. So it was definitely an upgrade to the offense. Not only just an upgrade because it's another target that you can throw the football to, but a guy who could make plays after he gets to football. You know, and you already had a very good receiving core. But to add a guy like Tyler Warren and the success he showed today, I think he put on notice the NFL that he's going to be held to deal with.
Starting point is 00:33:54 And the Colts now just have another weapon in their arsenal that they can use. to continue to have a ball control time-consuming offense that is going to consistently make first downs and put themselves in a position to add points to the board. Yeah, so much of this Colts offense is going to flow through Tyler Warren this year. And I think the sustainability aspect of it is that they're not using him like a, hey, go out and just get open and we're going to force feed you the ball. It's very much a planned effort to get him the ball in terms of RPO's. to the flats in terms of play actions with him leaking out the backside.
Starting point is 00:34:33 Like, it's very much a, we're going to set up the action for you here. And these players are designed to get you the ball in space to create. So I think there is a very sustainable aspect of this. Now, again, as the hits pile up in your rookie season, things can get kind of tough for a young player, but he's young, you know, and he's done that. And like last year, he got the ball every single play at Penn State, basically. So he's used to being this kind of focal point of an offense. Again, I think this is very sustainable, and I think my biggest, like, week one overreaction to all of this,
Starting point is 00:35:03 because even though I'm super pumped about this one, I'm not going to say the Colts are, like, amazing team, and Daniel Jones is the greatest player ever, but my biggest week one overreaction is Tyler Warren's going to be a big part of this offense. And I would not be shocked if he leads his team receiving this year after what we saw today, just because, again, the effort to get him the ball and the effort to get him the ball in space and to go to him in big situations, Tyler Warren's going to go crazy this year. Trade for him in fantasy football right now, guys. All of you listening, like, I know it's hard to get him right now because he had a big game. But like, do what you can to get him because I think this is the start of something great for him in Indy. What's up, Derek?
Starting point is 00:35:50 I think you're muted, but I do believe that was welcome me into the show. I did the train noise. are you ready to hop on the Tyler Warren train and it was muted. I know. You put your whole heart into that. I appreciate it. We'll throw an ad in there so we can make some money. Perfect.
Starting point is 00:36:08 That's what are we talking? Tyler Warren being the rookie of the year. Yeah. And if you're hopping on the train. Oh, I've been on the train. I didn't know he would go for seven catches already. But like that is the most, I can't think of a Colts rookie who looked less like a rookie ever. like even Andrew Luck had his huge gas I mean Andrew Luck was superhuman I'm not trying to be too hyperbolic but like Tyler Warren by no means looks like a guy who just got to the NFL like this is very very impressive what we're seeing out here he made a very clutch play there near the end where uh you know what was it like fourish fourish minutes left but the Colts were trying to wind down the game there and they got a first down with Warren where
Starting point is 00:36:55 or what was, I don't know, like a six or seven-yard hitch from Jones to Warren. He makes a slight move and then picks up like 10 extra yards with his legs, which is, you know, one of the biggest benefits of having him is creating those extra yards after the catch. So all of Warren's abilities benefited them greatly today. I'm sure we'll continue to see him running the ball a little bit more often as well as the season gets going. I say a pass or two when they're down in the low red zone. Yeah, and this may deserve, I mean, I think it was obvious the impact that Warren had. You probably need to look at the films, Zach, and Jake to talk about some of the other players,
Starting point is 00:37:34 but just from watching on TV, you know, it felt like Nick Cross was real active today. Obviously, you had the big play. You know, Bordellini just not hearing his name as much. You assume that he did well. Again, this is probably for locked on Colts like Tuesday or later in the week when you guys kind of dive to it. But any other individual performances, Zach, will start with you that kind of jumped out to you. Yeah, I think the two safeties were just fantastic in this game. From Nick Cross to Cameron Bynum, just the ability to take away the middle of the field
Starting point is 00:38:01 because the Shanahan system of offense is predicated on play action, RPO, and just in general getting the ball out quickly over the middle of the field to your playmakers and letting them create after the catch. So a big part of this game was going to be getting those safeties down over the middle in the box and taking the ball away or just pinching those routes over the middle and making the quarterback throw outside the numbers. And we saw early in this game that Tua was having a lot of issues throwing over the middle of the field from missing passes to sailing that interception
Starting point is 00:38:32 on the first drive to throwing it to Laotu Latu on the on like what the third or fourth drive. And a big part of that was the safety play. Nick Cross, like you said, Derek was very active in the run game, very active in the passing game and Cameron Bynum with the one interception in the near second interception. I really wish you could have got that. I was curious to see what the celebration would have looked like on the second interception because that first one was kind of crazy.
Starting point is 00:38:55 So, yeah, I think these two safeties really came to play, especially with how the safety play was the last couple years with the Colts from Ronnie Thomas starting and missing tackles and having his issues. Nick Cross's developmental curve, Julian Blackman's up and down play last year. To get a safety performance like this in week one is just awesome for the Colts going forward. what about you jake individual performance wise um you probably could see a little bit better even though it's kind of like watching the game from one of the rings of saturn when you're up in the lucas oil stadium press box it's so high up there but any other individuals that jumped
Starting point is 00:39:31 out to you so i i mostly wanted to shout out a lot of the guys that we or i individually were pretty skeptical of going in like tanner borderline we kind of felt good about already but matt gonzalves and braden smith very skeptical of those guys because I mean, we'd seen Gonzalez kind of with his warts and his growing pains during the preseason. And then I've seen Braden Smith give up a bunch of plays around the edge throughout the summer. So it's very skeptical about them. I was very pleased with what I saw. I mean, Jones only really got pressured a few times, right? Like I think they gave up one, maybe two sacks. I don't remember looking at the right side of the line and being like, oh,
Starting point is 00:40:11 God, this is such an issue. I mean, there were there were some times where Jonathan Taylor kind of got Stonewalled in the run game because the dolphins were very clearly trying to focus on that first and foremost. But, you know, I thought the line did very well. The linebackers, I don't have too much to say about them. I mean, there was some bigger runs from A Chan at times. Let's see. Xavier Howard. I didn't feel like, I mean, that's a 32-year-old corner who hasn't played in a year and is playing against arguably the most explosive receiver in the NFL. NFL, two of them, really. And these receivers know his game inside and out from practicing against him for however many years. So Howard did a really good job as well. And then obviously
Starting point is 00:40:58 Daniel Jones, like just that game of his life today. And it was good to see him being impactful with his legs as well. I mean, even if it's short yard and stuff, he converted what, two short touchdowns and then at least another one or two third or third or fourth down and shorts like that's something that they've hardly ever even done with anthony just diving up the middle as a quarterback like they usually get him outside to do that so this felt like a real true quarterback performance this week that we didn't have to like make excuses for or try and grasp it straws to justify it all like this was good quarterback play today uh Jake I'm going to pile on with of the people you highlighted, Zavian Howard. Understand, he was out all of last year and you
Starting point is 00:41:52 don't get better by not playing. But they pretty much got this guy off the street and brought him in, what, the last week of camp and immediately promoted him to starter. And the thing that lets me know that they were successful today is we didn't hear their names that much. Now, the Colts have a bend, but don't break aspects. Every time they played zone, that's when you saw the occasional pass over the middle or a receiver for the dolphins get some yards. But when they played man and those guys locked on the receivers, you could see the urgency and Tua just starting to step a little bit more because the guys weren't open
Starting point is 00:42:38 because the coverage was so good. So, and look, that, that frees up to safeties to just be, you know, to play reckless because they know that they don't have to help their corner because the corners got their, got their guy, you know, locked on them and everything. So I would highlight both corners, you know, Zabian Howard and Chavarious Ward, because you didn't hear a lot from them because they did their job so well. Yeah. No, I mean, there's so many guys to highlight this game. And I guess there's one more that we have to talk about who had a big game, but Michael Pittman, Jr. You know, Michael Pittman Jr. coming off a year last year where the back injury really hampered him. And a lot of people were debating, like, is he overpaid?
Starting point is 00:43:21 Is he a guy who can live up to, you know, the status of what the Colts are paying him? And can he get back to what he was? And he was just outstanding all game long. Like outside of Tyler Warren, he was the best playmaker on the offense today. Big time catch on that touchdown. Nearly dropped it. I was going to throw something if he were to have dropped that one. but he got it and scored the touchdown,
Starting point is 00:43:42 had a couple big time conversions. The RPO throw to him on the third and short, early in the game on the first drive was a great design, but him creating the extra 20 yards on that play was a thing of beauty. So, yeah, this Colts team, again, they wanted to impose their will. They wanted to come out and be physical
Starting point is 00:43:59 and show that they are this, like, power football team. So who are the three players that got the ball the most today? Tyler Warren, Michael Pittman, Jr., Jonathan Taylor. Those are our three bullies on offense. And the Colts relied on them to beat down a team that, again, there were a lot of questions with how this Miami Dolphins team was going to be physicality-wise this year. And the Colts just kind of stomped them in every facet in this game.
Starting point is 00:44:24 They wanted to show that they could be this more physical team. And they did it from day one. And another bully. Sorry, Zach, I was going to say, another bully that you, I know you just forgot because you meant to mention him. Spencer Schrader 4 of 4 on Hill Bulls. including bombing a 48-yarder and making all of his extra points. So throw him up there with J.T.
Starting point is 00:44:45 and Michael Pittman, Jr., all those guys as well. Alan, go ahead. I'm sorry to cut you off there. Well, no, I was just, I think you covered it all. So we can just move forward. But there are so many guys that deserve praise. And I think the running game, you know, needs its due also. Because it seemed like they maybe threw a lot.
Starting point is 00:45:08 but that running game was so reliant today and you just need that in order to be successful in this offense. If we are going to nitpick, I left like 60 seconds here to nitpick because I figured that's all we really, maybe we don't need all 60. Maybe the rush defense, low red zone, you know, a couple penalties in there, even though, you know, Zach, you had mentioned the DPI. I mean, I really don't see a lot to critique today. And maybe there will be more after you guys do the film review and all of that, but just kind of surface level stuff, I don't see a ton to critique. Yeah, I'm the jerk on this episode, so let me say my quick, my quick things here. If you want to nitpick anything, it would just be the couple penalties got a little bit out of hand
Starting point is 00:45:51 there in the second half. You wanted to chill a little bit with the holding penalties and stuff like that. Low red, like you mentioned, Derek, want to get a little bit better and getting into, you know, within the five-yard line, they were really good, but you want to get closer, obviously, so you don't have to sell for field goals there. run defense with the backup defensive tackles in there was very concerning in the second half at Tommy what was getting driven
Starting point is 00:46:13 quite a few off of the quite a few yards off the ball so that was concerning and then a little bit of kick coverage as well like they gave up a couple of returns that got to like the 45, 46 we want to keep that a little bit shorter there but again you're winning 33 to 8 here
Starting point is 00:46:30 we can't complain too much I can complain about Kenny Moore slipping in losing the shutout for them that you know what that's the biggest complaint right there in this case. Yeah, but the nitpicking is important because you always want to have something you have to improve on and you don't want to become complacent. You won and you don't want to think winning is easy. Winning is not easy in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:46:54 So you always want to put yourself in a position to improve. And so trust me, those coaches are going to highlight those things because they saw them too. and they will make a point to make sure that those things are addressed so that, you know, they can have that close to perfect game. I will have a small nitpick, and it's something that can be corrected, but I do think it could bite them in the future. Now, Daniel had an awesome game today. However, I did notice probably three times he was throwing the ball before he really
Starting point is 00:47:30 evaluated where the target was. He threw the ball into some dangerous areas where he didn't really process where that ball was going first because I think he was just in a hurry to get it where it was going. That's a very timing-based thing, and it's intentional, but I do think at times you probably need to take a second and see what's going on because there was a couple of those where it could have gotten into real trouble. But other than that, awesome timing. It's just one game, but what does this week one performance mean for the Colts going forward? sustainable, a fluke, some combination of those things. We're going to wrap up on the locked on cold squad show with that next. This portion of the squad show brought to you by Upside.

Starting point is 00:49:12 Go to upside.com for terms and conditions. And we're back for a final. time on the Colts Squad show alongside Zach Hicks and Jake Arthur, the dynamic duo from Locked on Colts, who you every day or know well, and Notre Dame legend and former NFL running back Alan Pinkett. I'm Derek Schultz.
Starting point is 00:49:33 We've been recapping for the last 49 and a half minutes, and I would love to be 49 and a half minutes more, to be totally honest with you. These are the fun recap shows to do, right? 33-8. Colts win the opener and end a 12-year winless streak in the opener. Before we get to
Starting point is 00:49:49 what's this mean moving forward, Alan I wanted to kind of lean on you here because you're the lone former NFL or in the room in case you guys couldn't already tell watching on YouTube and all of that. As a player, look, again, long season, don't get too high, don't get to. We've heard all the cliches, right, that come from the locker room. But because it's week one, because it's the opener, because there's a lot of newness, even with some of the holdovers on this Colts team, do you get an even bigger boost from a performance like this, sort of like a proof of process to have this type of result?
Starting point is 00:50:19 you do because there's so much work that goes into the off-season and you're looking for signs in the preseason you know you go through all that hard practice and a lot of it is mundane and it's it's boring sometimes you know so when you win your first game it's like okay all that work was worth it but it's just a start you know because it is a long season. But, you know, so much of this game is confidence. And if, you know, I can tell you about confidence because the teams I played for, we went to the playoffs every year except one that I was there. And confidence was such a big factor that when we entered into the season, it wasn't we hope we make the playoffs. It was how deep are we going to go.
Starting point is 00:51:19 into the playoffs. And so that extra layer of confidence helps out in the game because it helps you execute better. And so I know that the Colts have some confidence because whatever questions they had in the preseason, they answered them in today's game. And now they have something, they have a foundation they can build upon because they know they can go make plays and they know they can win. And so now it doesn't matter who the opponent is. They play their game, yet they execute the way they know they can execute, run their system the way they run their system. It doesn't matter who they're playing. And so you always look at the level of competition.
Starting point is 00:52:02 But what's more important is the level of execution. And when you add confidence to that level of execution, that's a team that can't be stopped. Yeah. And Alan talks about it from the player perspective and from the team perspective. And because contrary to popular belief, I didn't play in the NFL, it's kind of tough to see. with here on YouTube. Even with that cut off. Right, even with the cutoff.
Starting point is 00:52:22 I'm trying to show off the arms, obviously. But, you know, for me as someone sitting at home, the two things are giving the most confidence when it comes to this team today are one, Shane Stiking kind of overcoming his demons of this type of defensive coach. We talked about it all week. Me and Jake did on the regular show for sure,
Starting point is 00:52:38 and I think I even talked about it on here, where this Ravens Tree style of defense, where they're going to mix and match some things, they're going to rotate pre and post snap, and they're going to try to muddy as much as possible for you, Shane Steichen has really struggled with these types of defensive coaches in his career, and for him to come out here and pitch a perfect game like this, it gives me all the confidence in the world going forward with him in this offense
Starting point is 00:53:01 because that was really the biggest question mark he had to answer for, I think, because we saw him just tear apart static defenses each of his first two years with the Colts, but this was a different style of defense. I know they had some injuries in the secondary, and their secondary is just not good on paper right now, but guys were open all game long in this one. and that speaks just levels to how good Shane Stuyck and called a game. And then on defense, just seeing how the defenders were flying around in this new system,
Starting point is 00:53:28 I was expecting a bit of a learning curve from this defense. And we could still see that next week against the Denver Broncos. But, you know, I was expecting more of a learning curve. I was expecting these guys to be a little passive because there is so much communication. There is so much rotating pre and post snap. But instead, we saw a defense that was flying around fast, going after the ball, taking the ball away and making big time plays. So if you want any kind of confidence going forward,
Starting point is 00:53:54 those are the two biggest things for me. Shane Stike in overcoming one of his biggest demons in terms of the play style against him. And this defense is looking confident, hungry, physical, and fun out there. Those are the two biggest things I carry forward from this game. Yeah, what Shane just did gave me a lot of confidence, but who he did it with even more so. because Daniel Jones, obviously, he gets the starting job because he's got all this starting experience and because he can get guys in the right position.
Starting point is 00:54:23 But we saw a direct correlation of him changing protections or checking out of certain things and them getting big plays directly on those plays because of what he did. And so that gives me a lot of confidence that you can marry a quarterback who does see the game a certain way with a play caller who understands where to. to go with the ball. So those things were very, very functional today. And that was in a game where, I mean, Jonathan Taylor did have some really productive runs,
Starting point is 00:54:55 but overall, like they did a decent job of keeping him in check relatively. And so I don't think any of us, even those of us who picked the Colts to win, didn't think that the Colts would come out slinging it like they did. And so they won kind of balanced, but with the heavy reliance on the passing game, which I did not expect. And then they held a defensive front that I thought would have a lot more teeth to it.
Starting point is 00:55:23 They held them in check. And then on the defensive side of the ball, like I just thought Loua and Arumo, again, just pitched a masterclass of a performance because Miami's offense, when it's clicking, they're very fast-paced, Tua gets the ball out of his hand quicker than anybody. but because of what they were doing it was it was throwing to his time off you can see guys frustrated on the sideline tyreek had very little impact wattle had very little impact like they just they just totally took this offense out of its element and this is an offense that does really really well in this setting early in the season indoors out of the elements everything is controlled like both sides of the
Starting point is 00:56:08 ball made their opponent look uncharacteristic, which I thought was excellent. Again, Miami is a weak opponent. A lot of people thought there were going to be a dumpster fire this year, but they still have some players. But I mean, Denver is the real barometer next week, but this was such a good, this was such a good thing to put on film to see what they're capable of. I think we at least know that they're going to beat bad teams this year. Well, I guess, I could maybe nitpick on one more thing because it was a game that was the Colts were totally dominant. But in that type of performance as a running back, you would love to cliffs the 100-yard marker. And I'm sure that, you know, they put Jonathan Taylor on the shelf basically after the first half.
Starting point is 00:57:01 He did get 18 carries, got 71 yards. But the barometer for success as a running back is that century mark, getting that 100-yard game. And even though you had DJ Giddens come in there and run the ball 12 times, sometimes in the back of your mind is like, you know, maybe five of those 12 carries you got should have been me, so I could have got 100 yards. But ultimately, what you want is a win, which you got, and coming out of the game, healthy. because this is going to be your battering ram. Jonathan Thale's going to be your battering ram. So if you have a chance to rest him and not get all those little nicks and bruises on him so he can be fresh for the following game,
Starting point is 00:57:47 I'm sure that's something he would agree with too. But, you know, deep down aside, yeah, I'd like to get a hundred-yard game. Alan, you mentioned health. Any updates from the Colts? because we've been kind of flying blind here because we've been doing the live recap show, but Jalen Jones leaving with a hamstring, and then, you know, we mentioned J.T. It looked like he got hit kind of in the head, neck area. Shane Stuyck and the Colts say anything?
Starting point is 00:58:11 Didn't hear anything about Jones, but I did ask about Taylor and Shane said he's going to be fine because, I mean, part of that they were up big, but he did get banged up a little bit. I was like, it looks like J.T. got banged up a little bit. He didn't come back in and he said, yeah, he's going to be fine. So anybody else on that list that they mentioned? No. Actually, Shane did not come out and mention. in a list of injuries. I think they were riding such an emotional roller coaster there.
Starting point is 00:58:35 But I mean, Jonathan Taylor and Jalen Jones were really the only noteworthy ones. Jones, I'm skeptical if they're going to park him on eye or not because he just, I don't know if it's the same hamstring or not. We'll ask Shane tomorrow, but, I mean, that didn't look great. No, and got that cornerback room. We all know the bad luck there. So maybe you don't want to, you don't want to tempt fate. At least Ward came back in the game.
Starting point is 00:58:58 That could have been ugly. Yeah. yeah for sure but all in all a great performance the 12 year streak is over guys i will say i am a little sad i can't reach into my bag and pull out that terrell prior factoid anymore we have to we have to put away the trell prior facts for the colts because they are winners one and oh and we will be with you again for a live game recap after the denver game next week and thanks so much for joining us in the colt spot show we are your place for live game recaps following each and every colts game but we have a wednesday show too we don't want you to forget about that
