Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Colts Squad Show. I'm your host, Derek Schultz, and these 50-degree temps that we have right now in Indy have me feeling like football weather. And I'm Zach Hicks, and it's a waiting game until the NFL draft. Almost here. We've got to wait out this last month. I'm Jake Arthur. And hey, it's Zach Hicks' birthday. And I'm Alan Pink at former Euler, and ready to dive into this new look Colts team.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Colts Nation rise up. It's the Colts Squad. everything Indianapolis Colts every week. Covering all the big hits and game changing plays from the Circle City, the way only the locked on podcast network can. It's time to squad up. The Colt Squad Joe starts now. Welcome to the Colts Squad Show.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Thanks so much for joining us. I'm your host Derek Shultz. Longtime indie sports talker and columnist for the Indianapolis Business Journal. I'm joined by a nerd name legend who's in his Kelly Green tonight, long time NFL running back as well and Alan Pinkett, along with the dynamic duo. of the locked on Colts, your daily first listen every day, Jake Arthur and Zach Hicks. Don't let the mustache fool you. Zach is actually turning 19 today for his court day.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Heading into the final days of March, but Dustin settled a bit. I want people to know that I'm not serious. He's not actually 19 yet. He's pushing more like 30. Dustin settled a bit, guys, on free agency. So I think we're safe to proceed with report cards. So we're going to go ahead and do that on tonight's show. In the first segment, we'll be grading the new Colts defensive players.
Starting point is 00:01:34 and there are a lot of those. There aren't as many offensive players will be touching on a few of those in segment number two while we finish up the rest of the defensive group. But some intriguing names and I know, of course, Jake and Zach have talked about these
Starting point is 00:01:47 on the Daily Show as well, as have Alan and I and when we've gotten the squad together as these signings have come in, but now just kind of grading them individually. Now that you start to sort of see where the pieces fit with one another, we'll do so in segment one and segment two.
Starting point is 00:02:03 And I think it's worth grade the guys that aren't here anymore and the decisions to let some folks walk in free agency, which has been something that Chris Bauer has done a lot. He certainly did a lot of that this year with the Colts in-house free agents, so we'll talk about that in segment three. And then in segment
Starting point is 00:02:18 four, as we usually do with the Tuesday show, we'll round it out with some losing notes from around the league that may or may not be relevant to the Colts. But guys, let's start with grading the Colts defensive additions. And I figured we should just start with the defensive line guys,
Starting point is 00:02:34 because there were so many of them, particularly defensive tackles. We saw the Colts sort of make a run on those late in the first week in free agency. Now, the first move of that, of course, was the Colby Wooden deal where you bring in, Zaire Franklin. I understand the Colby Wooden wasn't a free agent signing, but, you know, an acquisition that they brought in. And then the two guys from the Chiefs with Derek Nottie and Jerry Tillery and then, you know, Michael Clemens and Arden Key from the Titans and the Jets, respectively, kind of coming in as well.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Zach, we knew that they were going to remake, particularly the defensive end room, outside of Laotu Latu, right? With so many of those guys being veteran guys and their contracts coming up. But what do you think about the two that they added there? Let's kind of start with Key and Clemens and that Colts pass rush room.
Starting point is 00:03:24 Yeah, I like them as long as the roles are kind of what we expect them to be with those players, where like if Arden Key, if we're grading him as a rotational rusher as edge number three, the first guy off the bench, a guy you get out there for some past rushing situations and occasional early down stuff, I really like him. I think he's a player who, you know, the early part of his career was kind of a train wreck with the Raiders, but he really found his rhythm when he went to the 49ers and then carried that through his
Starting point is 00:03:52 first year at the Jaguars after that. And even his early seasons with the Tennessee Titans were really good football. He's regressed a little bit the last two years, like most players. do when they hit around 30 years old. But I still think he is a highly effective third rusher, a guy that you can get out there. He can be an average to above average pass rusher, brings that speed element, like a little bit of fastball off the edge. So I like him a lot in that role.
Starting point is 00:04:16 And then Clemens, I know he's a player that, you know, is kind of been laughed at by Jets fans for the Colts acquiring him because he was just kind of a mess there with the Jets, more penalties than Sacks in his NFL career at this point. But I think there are some good things. like on film. And if he's just your Taekwon Lewis replacement, your Edge 4, then I think he's a perfectly fine player for that. I think he's even an upgrade over what Taekwon Lewis gave them, evidence by how Tyquan Lewis, I don't know if he's going to play in the NFL this next season. Like, he's not really generating much interest around the league currently. And Lewis made over
Starting point is 00:04:48 $7 million last year. Clemens is making an average of like $4.5 million. So save money, get younger, get a little bit better at Edge 4. But these grades are completely dependent on the those guys filling those roles. If Key is a starter, then the grade drops. If Clemens is your first guy up off the bench, then the grade drops quite a bit for those guys because they are just not suited for those roles. So as of right now, like in a vacuum, you know, I give like a key.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Key is probably like a B type signing for me. Clemens, like a C, C plus. Like it's solid. Like I think that they're perfectly fine signings. But it certainly drops the grade if those guys have to be starters for the Colter or very high leverage players that like in Clemens case, So we'll see ultimately what the next move is at edge. But I think these guys are upgrades over Ebukam and Taekwon-Lewis,
Starting point is 00:05:37 as long as that's who they are replacing. I think I would give like the Colts decision makers probably like a C to this level of how they have addressed the defensive line to this point, at least the edge room. But like Zach said, with Key and Clemens specifically, like he, I like him as a rotational piece. you know, I think like a B, B minus is solid. If you're looking for just that guy to be able to give you five to seven sacks maybe, like that's usually what you would probably target out of your third guy. Clemens is a bit of, I mean, he's a bit of a mystery.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Like Zach said, if you heard from any Gets fan, it was, ha, thanks for taking him off our hands. And I know Colts fans don't love players that make dumb mistakes. stakes, but that's kind of his thing so far. He's not been productive statistically or, you know, especially as a pass rush or which you're really looking for, obviously. But I do remember him coming out of Texas A&M. He's an intriguing guy, a powerful guy with some athletic traits, good size.
Starting point is 00:06:45 I think that's what, you know, Chris Ballard and company are banking on that they can still kind of get this kid out of Texas A&M to get him to his potential and almost forget about what happened in New York, maybe a little bit. So that one, I can't, I can't give it too great of a grade just because what the guy has been in the NFL so far, it just leaves a lot to be desired. But as a prospect, I see the upside. So you could, I mean, I probably wouldn't go beyond like a C-minus with that one with Clemens. But I do remember liking him as a prospect coming out. I just don't love where it's led him through New York so far. but I will say the New York Jets defense has been on the downturn.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Like we saw Soss Gardner start out as hot as ever, and then he kind of went down with the ship a little bit. So maybe it's just a matter of like the whole unit suffering together and that a change of scenery will do him some good. But the thing is he's got to not make the dumb mistake. So that's like an individual problem that you've got to figure out. Well, I don't have the knowledge. These two guys have in terms of the personnel.
Starting point is 00:08:02 So it's hard for me to give a grade to guys. I don't even know. But one of the things I sort of lean towards average, meaning C, just in terms of the fact that they've established some depth. Zach, I agree with you that if this Arden Key is a starter, then that's probably a mistake. You're looking for a specialist off the edge. But I think I value the inside players a little bit more
Starting point is 00:08:41 in their ability to tie up most of the line to give the edge guys the freedom to make their moves and get a good rush on. And I think they did a good job with the depth. I'm excited about Tilleri, not just because he's a Notre Dame guy. But to me, he's always been a solid performer. But I guess you have to look at the fact that this will be his, what, third or fourth team coming to the Colts, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:14 and when you start getting passed around, you know, maybe it's rent for a year. Maybe he's too expensive. or maybe they are seeing that his talent has diminished a little bit. But I know him as a good leader, a guy who is, you know, very aggressive on the line. And, you know, I do like the fact that on the D line, I guess if we had to grade D linebacker, defensive back, I might give different grades. I might give D line a B because I do prefer. are veterans on the line.
Starting point is 00:09:54 I like a little bit of experience at linebacker. And I like a mix of both, you know, veteran savvy and youth in a defensive backfield. I think on the D-line, I like experience, though. I like guys that are familiar with, you know, a number of the Office of Lyman that will be playing against. and just being a pro knowing that they've got, what, 18 weeks that they have to try and put in. And so they don't hit a rookie wall.
Starting point is 00:10:33 They hopefully will get better as the season goes along. And a lot of times as a player, when you switch team, that's the kind of spark you need to ignite that little gear that you haven't had with another team. Sometimes it's one of those you feel slighted because the team gave up on you. So you're looking for that next opportunity to prove to the team that lets you go that you're going to make them pay. So I do like the defensive line. The defensive backfield got to wait and see because I thought there was good chemistry and the defensive backfield. I would probably give that a C. and I would give the linebacker crew that they brought in an incomplete
Starting point is 00:11:20 because I really don't see anything there. And to me, it just signals that they're relying on the draft to get the linebackers that they need. And I think for a loop and a Rumo defense, I think it centers more on line play and defensive backfield play and not so much on the linebacker, even though the linebackers, one with the green dot.
Starting point is 00:11:46 So unless they make somebody else a green dot, I could see them, you know, maybe making Cam, buying them a green dot, maybe another one of the defensive, a safety, a green dot. I don't know if they would put that responsibility on a rookie linebacker. But I like youth at that position. And the linebackers coming in now, are bigger, faster, stronger. It's just amazing how athletic, especially when I watch that combine,
Starting point is 00:12:20 watching those linebackers run, I'm like, damn, I'm glad I'm not playing anymore, trying to outrun those suckers, you know. And so a lot of it remains to be seen, but I'm going to rely on Zach and Jake to give better explanations, like I said, because I don't know these dudes. Yeah, that's tough. I mean, I think the important. caveat is exactly what Zach said, where if these guys are fulfilling the roles that we think they are,
Starting point is 00:12:51 then here's the grade. If they're brought in to do something else, then that's a whole different ball game because that has been, am I right to say, Zach, one of Chris Bowers issues. You know, Matt Pryor is fine as a depth piece on the offensive line. You can grade him as such. If you're grading him as a starting left tackle, then that's a whole different ballgame. You know, Rodney Thomas is a perfectly capable backup NFL safety when you're in a real pinch. If you're going to try them out there as a starter, then that can be a real problem. And I think, you know, you have to kind of adjust things accordingly when it, when it comes to these personnel who largely look like, and there are some exceptions that we're going to
Starting point is 00:13:31 get into in the next segment when we talk about some of the other defensive players that they're brought in with starting aspirations. But, you know, the guys that we're talking about in this group largely have been backup caliber players. Yeah. And I think they put a lot of their eggs in the Trey Hendrickson basket landing that. And partially, part of me is, like, grateful that didn't get that because I got a 32-year-old pass rusher only quite seven games last year just isn't very appealing to me. But I do think that's what the Colts were banking on. They have a lot of cap space right now that presumably would have gone to get Trey Hendricks
Starting point is 00:13:59 in here if it weren't for Baltimore backing out of a trade that they agreed to just because they wanted to get Trey Hendrickson. But all that aside here, yeah, it's all about what the next move is that identifies them. It's like the Colts tight-end room before they got Tyler Warren, right? Before that, it was like, why are these guys playing so much? It's just not working. But the second you get Tyler Warren in there, oh, Moe-Cox is all of a sudden an underrated player again.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Jerobotry, perfectly fine, tight-end three. Will Mallory and the couple snaps he gets out there is pretty decent. It defines the entire room. So they need that other starting edge rusher out there to define the whole room. Real quick, though, before we get out of this segment, I did want to say something real quick about Kobe Wooden. Again, he's still probably my favorite acquisition of the offseason for the Colts. I'm really high on this player.
Starting point is 00:14:43 I thought he played some great football for the Packers. Honestly, the biggest negative in his game is just that he wore down throughout the course of games because he was a 290 pound player playing nose tackle in their system. The Colts want him playing more three tech. They want to get him more involved in the rotation when they go to their more like 3, 4 or 5, 2, whatever you want to call that defensive front, get him playing more of that like 4 tech, five tech type stuff as well. So he's not going to be used as much as a nose tackle this next season.
Starting point is 00:15:12 But he showed some really good things as a run defender last year. I still think there's some untapped potential as a pass rusher. I really like getting Kobe Wooden in here to be that three tech. And I know he weighs like $2.90 now. If you can get him down to like $2.80, $2.85. I think he can be a DeNico Autry type of player for them. It's just about seeing what they can. But getting him out in here on the last year of his rookie deal,
Starting point is 00:15:34 seeing what you got out of him, I'm really excited for what we wouldn't this year. We talked a lot about the Lou Anerumo reunion when it comes to the Colts free agents. But how about a Hoosier coming home as well? We'll round out the rest of the Colts editions next when the squad show returns. This portion of the Colts Squad Show brought you by our friends at TurboTax. It's tax time, but for a lot of us, the old way of doing taxes is a lot. Thanks so much for joining us alongside former NFLer. And still, you know, I say sometimes former NFL legend, he'll always be a nerd name, a legend. And Alan Pinkett, the former all-time leading rusher and still second leading rusher all-time in Irish history.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Jake Arthur, Zach Hicks here as well from Lockdown Colts. And my name is Derek Schultz. So let's grade the rest of the Colts defensive editions. And I'll be honest, you know, generally in segment one, we put kind of the juiciest content, just kind of wet the appetite. I know some people are probably angry that we started with like, hey, what do you think of Arden Key? I think there's a much more interesting group of defensive free agents in that next wave
Starting point is 00:17:26 when you talk about Juanier Thomas from the Cowboys and, you know, Jonathan Owens because of who he's dating, right? Camp Taylor, or Brit with the Bengals, Akim Davis Gather. I think that's a much more interesting group. And that's sort of what I mentioned, Zach, you know, the list of guys, especially the defensive tackle guys that we sort of talked about there, were more rotational-type players in a best-case scenario.
Starting point is 00:17:51 I think you can talk yourself pretty easily into Thomas and Davis-Gather, especially, and then even Taylor Britt, you know, considering the Colts injury history, a cornerback of playing significant roles with this team in 2026. Yeah, they're going to have the opportunity to compete. I think one thing with all these contracts is, aside from McKeem Davis Gaither, these guys are all vet minimum contracts. So there's no guarantee that these players are making the team.
Starting point is 00:18:13 It's kind of similar to a Neville Gallimore situation last year, right? Gallimore came in here on near vet minimum status, and his place wasn't really solidified going into camp, but then he was able to earn that spot with how he performed in training camp to where it wasn't even a discussion by the time roster cut downs came. Like, oh, yeah, he was going to make the team for sure and be part of the rotation. So guys like Cam Taylor, Brett, Juanier Thomas, Jonathan Owens, Akeem Davis Gather. Like they're all in that same bucket for the Colts. Like I think outside of, again, outside of Akeem Davis Gather,
Starting point is 00:18:43 these guys are all fighting for roster spots. I would say if I had to grade these players that they brought in here, like again, on these vet minimum contracts, I think by far in a way my favorite is Akeem Davis Gather. Just a player who knows the system played some pretty good ball last year. I really enjoyed his film. A limited player, like I'm not going to tout him as some hidden superstar around the league. But I thought he was in a bubushableness.
Starting point is 00:19:06 above average run defender and what I saw, good run and chase will linebacker that can play some sand stuff. And then past coverage, there were some hits and misses, but I think he has good zone eyes and good aggression and zone coverage as well. So I'm very excited about Akeem Davis Gather coming in here. I think he can be an upgrade over Jermaine Pratt. And also Wanyay Thomas is just another young player at safety who, I think that if he gets the right, you know, like area to run, like runway basically going forward with the
Starting point is 00:19:35 Colts, like a chance to compete. be that strong safety and he can bring forward like his best moments from the cowboys, I think he can be a starting caliber safety in this league. So those are the two players that probably stand out the most to me. Taylor Britt, you're kind of buying low on a guy who's coming off just a dreadful season with the Cincinnati Bengals. It's kind of hard to really contextualize it more than that. I dealt with some injuries. I think in the last calendar year, he's had a quad injury, a hamstring injury, and Liz Frank injury. So that might be why he's probably here on the vet minimum after being. He was also arrested. Don't forget that. Yeah, and arrested as well.
Starting point is 00:20:11 So really kind of last chance you when it comes to Cam Taylor Britt. But I don't mind the shot when it comes to seeing if there's anything left. And then if it doesn't work out, Mackay Blackman, Jonathan Edwards, here's your standard to beat here in training camp. So these are all good for competition. These are the kind of signings that I've always wanted Chris Ballard to make more of. because if we look at his past, right, Neville Gallimore, Chris Reed, T.J. Carey, Rodney McLeod. Like, he's had a pretty good hit rate on these, like,
Starting point is 00:20:40 vet minimum guys that he's brought in to compete. And then if they don't work out, again, you just cut them in camp and it's not the end of the world. So I like these for competition. But, yeah, Kim Davis-Gather and Juanye Thomas are the two that really stand out the most to me. Those are the ones I'm excited about. And especially Davis-Gather, like he's probably going to be a starter next season.
Starting point is 00:20:58 We'll see if Juanio Thomas can win. a spot in camp, but all these guys are going to have a chance to compete for roles and make this team. And then if they're not at their best, or they deal with injuries, then all these young guys have an opportunity to take a role from them. Yeah, I certainly think Davis Gather and Juan E. Thomas are going to be the two that probably play the most. Colby wouldn't as well, but obviously he's going to be in the mix with the Forrest Buckner, trying to give him a little bit of relief. But Thomas really, really intrigues me. I actually discussed him just this morning with Marcus Mosher of locked on cowboys to get more information about him.
Starting point is 00:21:35 I actually put out a little minisone about Thomas today. So basically, Dallas has always just like a really crowded group of safeties. And he came in as a UDFA. It's really hard to crack that. But he finally got into the starting rotation. But at the same time, Dallas has had a different defensive coordinator every year of his career. So it's been just so hard for like a UDFA like that to get some footing, get consistency, and do his thing. But finally, again, he got some traction as a starter before this migraine issue, which he says has since been addressed and corrected, derailed his season.
Starting point is 00:22:15 But Marcus was saying he's kind of at his best closer to the line of scrimmage like a knit cross would be. And it just has some good instincts closer to the line. and seeing what's in front of him. There's some patches to make in coverage, but kind of sound, like, without probably the physicality of Nick Cross, sounded like very much a stylistically knit cross type player. Like, you could probably not put him one for one as a replacement there,
Starting point is 00:22:44 but it sounds like he would be the frontrunner to me to be the new strong safety. I know they want to do some stuff with Hunter Woller, but Woller has to kind of prove himself and maybe earn just like that diamond. linebacker role first. But I certainly think Juanay Thomas is going to be someone who we see quite a bit of. And I'm excited to see him just with this untapped potential with a defensive coordinator that seems to really utilize his skill set very well. Like he's kind of had to show that he could wear a lot of hats just because of the instability around him and the coaching staff. But now he's going to have a coach that wants to do all these different things with him by.
Starting point is 00:23:26 design. So I'm pretty intrigued to see what Lou comes up with for him. Wow. I get to talk about defense again. He's getting out to offense. Yeah, well, I can, I'll say this. Any player you get from the Cowboys, the one thing the Cowboys do better than anybody else is get guys that look great in a uniform. You know, they have a way of getting the most athletic. every single position that they have. I can think the only guy I can think that looked bad in a uniform for the Cowboys was Russell Maryland, and I'm going back away, you know, because he had a little bit of a gut, but that dude could play.
Starting point is 00:24:13 But you're going to get an athlete. But when I think about the Cowboys last year, weren't they in the lower tier of the team pass defense? I mean, you know, so. Thomas was out for most of the season, though. So not completely on him. He only played three games. Now they did struggle in those games as well. But honestly, I didn't think that his play was bad in those games.
Starting point is 00:24:39 It's just, you know, Matt Iber flus's defense has kind of been figured out a little bit at the NFL level. So it's, you know, it was a little bit tough for them last season. Yeah, well, when I think about Iber flus with the bears, you know, it's still, what the hell were you thinking type of deal? And to see him bounce back, you know, so. so quickly and get a job with the Cowboys. Of course, the Cowboys, you know, they've made a decision that they want to win on offense.
Starting point is 00:25:06 They don't want to necessarily win on defense. You know, so they put all their assets and their money on offense. So getting somebody from the Cowboys doesn't really, you know, impress me that much. But I know that he's going to be a great athlete. Now, we'll just have to see if. being a great athlete turns him into being a great football player, you know, because I know a lot of teams have tried to get great athletes. And you remember a guy named Skeets, Nehemiah Skeets?
Starting point is 00:25:44 He tried to play football for the 49ers because he was a world-class hurdler, and he was real fast, but, you know, he's a track guy. Just because you fast doesn't make you a great receiver. So just being a great athlete doesn't make you a good football player. But looking at the signings and really depending upon, you know, you do, Zach and Jake, helps me to formulate an opinion. It seems like a decent fit in terms of what Ballard was trying to accomplish. And like I said in the last segment,
Starting point is 00:26:25 I do like the fact that they focused on depth and they've got veterans in spots where I like there to be veterans. Skeets got to call himself a Super Bowl champ, though, Alan, right? Didn't he? Yes, he did. He was with the Niners for five minutes, but those five minutes were in the 1980s,
Starting point is 00:26:42 which was a pretty good five minutes to spend with the San Francisco 49ers. Yeah, so if we're doing grades, Zach, I'm assuming an A for Akeem Davis-Kather, just because you feel like that's good value there, and he's probably going to be a starting level player for you, and maybe lower Bs for the rest of the group, just worth a flyer?
Starting point is 00:27:04 Am I in the right ballpark? Yeah, I would say, like, if I was going by every signing that they've made so far this year, let me see if I can remember all of them. I'll top my head here. Akeem Davis-Gather would be the highest one I would give. I'd probably give them an A-for-that, A-minus for that, getting a starting caliber of play.
Starting point is 00:27:20 player at $2.4 million per year is fine by me. Kobe wouldn't, I'd say, you know, in that B, B plus A tier around there. Arden Key, like a B tier. Juanier Thomas, I like the flyer for that minimum around B as well. Unfortunately, Alan, I'm not a big fan of Tilleri or Nottie. Those guys would be very low for me. Derek Nottie and Jerry Tilleri, very, very low for me. I'm not going to give them a grade because it wouldn't be kind to them at all.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Clemens and Nick Westbrook, Kakinah, probably like in the C tier, like, they're fine. I probably put Cam Taylor Britt in there as like a C as well just because I understand the shot on him. The film was really awful last year, though. Like, you're buying a guy at his absolute lowest currently. And again, I'm fine with that, but just don't go into camp expecting him to be like quarterback three, you know, like don't have him above Wally in camp because Wally's going to be better. than him in trading camp. And then Jonathan Owen, Simone Biles' husband, probably have him as like a C.C. Plus as well, a good special teamer. I think that that's fine to have good athlete overall as well. So, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:33 one thing I always have like saying, the one saying I've used since I started covering the Colts back in the day was you could sell me on any free agent deal on a one-year contract. Because if it doesn't work out, cool. I only had the one year cut tied to it. So you could literally sign me right now to a one-year contract. And I'd be like, well, you can get out of that in a year because it's not going to work out with me out there. You know, like you could literally sign anybody, sign any Colts podcaster to a one-year contract.
Starting point is 00:28:59 And I think it would be perfectly fine because you can get out of that whenever you want. So there's really no harm, no foul when it comes to one-year contracts in the NFL. So, you know, even if I'm not high on Derek Nottie or Jerry Tilleri, maybe they surprise in camp, right? You have, it's for a vet minimum. They barely cost anything. See what they have. And I know what Alan will always say is, like, these guys have.
Starting point is 00:29:19 Super Bowl pedigree, right, with the Super Bowl program with the Chiefs. So let's see if that carries over to the Colts camp. And if not, you can get out of it without any issue. So why not take those shots, right? Well, one other thing I wanted to throw in is because folks rely on us for the answers. But I actually have a question. Is it premature for us to be giving a grade, given the fact that they've got, what is it, 30 million in cap space?
Starting point is 00:29:47 So they're not done. They're not done. So, I mean, at some point, between now and the draft, they're probably going to make a splash. It might be, you know, they might give up that second round pick to get the guy that they want with all that cap space. So I don't know. Do you think that they're done?
Starting point is 00:30:14 No, no. I mean, the colds, like, again, we call them Bargain, Vin Ballard, and stuff the last couple years, but they always use up pretty much all their cat space. They rarely roll over stuff. So they will find ways to use this cap space. So I still think there are deals coming. It's just every single person in the NFL right now is waiting on the compic formula for post-draft and waiting for some of these like free agent and trade compensation or conversations
Starting point is 00:30:39 to fall. So I certainly think other moves will come for the Colts. It just comes down to when they happen because there's a lot of, you know, a lot of finagling going with the comp pick formula and all that stuff. I also teased him in the tease, so I want to spend 30 seconds, which is probably what they deserve on Carson Tout from who played basketball and Nick Westbrook, Nick Westbrook, Aquini, as well, from the Titans who, you know,
Starting point is 00:31:07 I thought he was great with Simi Cobbs back at his IU days. And I know he's, you know, he hung around with the Titans for a little while. You know, we'll see. I guess it is nice to see a familiar name. I'm somewhat uncomfortable with all the hyphins we're going to have to deal with for next year with this free agency class. But I guess that's where we are with this group with 2026. So next, we're going to talk about the guys that the Colts decided to bring back and the ones that they decided to let walk, including several starters at key positions. We'll dive into more of the report cards when the Colt Squad show returns.

Starting point is 00:33:14 slash Everydayer Club. So let's go through the subtraction. guys. First, I think we do need to get this out of the way. And I think we're all in agreement here. So I'm just going to take it upon myself to say a big A for the Colts to bring back Alec Pierce and bring back Daniel Jones. Those were the two biggest priorities this offseason. Say what you want about both of them. Say what you want about what they paid Pierce. Say what you want about Jones and the Achilles and eight games and small sample size. I'm just going off what they said. They said those are the two biggest priorities of the off season. They brought two of those, both of those guys back,
Starting point is 00:33:47 even though they made everybody kind of sweat it out a little bit. So I think they get an A for that. But Zach, when you start getting into, you know, some of the others on here, you know, we talked about it's not the fact that Michael Pittman Jr. was kind of let to walk out the door. We knew with the contract and all of that that was going to happen. It's the fact that you get very little to no compensation for a player who is still an effective player and a veteran player and has value.
Starting point is 00:34:14 It sounds like you like the Zaire Franklin move just because maybe a change is scenery was best for both sides there. And Colby Wooden as well, you talked pretty highly on him. But, you know, kind of quietly out the door goes Brandon Smith, who maybe we felt like was a fait accompli, but Quitty Pay, Nick Cross, Neville Gallimore. You know, there are some guys on there that really contributed to the cult success over the past couple of years. And I think there's some risk in the fact that we don't quite know if they're going to
Starting point is 00:34:44 get even a player as capable as pay back in this defensive. rotation defensive end rotation or a player is capable as cross even though they signed a couple of dns and they signed a couple of safeties yeah no i think that's very fair to to to really speculate about but i think overall the colts probably made the right decisions on every guy that decided to bring back and let go um maybe outside of nick cross which i think ultimately came down to cross wanting to get back into the dmv area where he grew up still a fairly young player uh so i don't know if they could have even won that real realistically anyway so aside from losing cross, I think every decision they made on who they brought back and who they didn't
Starting point is 00:35:21 just makes the most sense for the team. And I know we can always talk about the unknown of things, but what good teams do is they know when it's time to move on from players. Even if a player like Quitty Pay goes to another location and ends up killing it with the Raiders, it was still time to move on from his time with the Colts because in five years it just wasn't happening here. That's just ultimately what it was with Quitty Pay. In terms of some of the other players to move on from, though, in terms of, like, Michael Pittman Jr. and Braden Smith, awesome players, career, like, fringe ring of honor type players for the Colts, honestly, very good players. But it's just, it was time to move on from those guys. Pitman had really gone downhill the last two
Starting point is 00:36:03 years. Braden Smith, in his last three years of play, had missed over 30% of his available gains. It was just time to make those moves at those positions. So overall, I think they made all the right decisions that they need to make. And I applaud Ballard for not being as sentimental as he has traditionally been with the Colts, right? The two tough ones, obviously, were Michael Pittman Jr. and Zire Franklin, where those were deals that probably had to be made just to get that shakeup that the team needed, even if it results in worse results, you know, it's kind of like the fallacy of arguing if they should fire Chris Ballard every offseason, right? It's like, well, it gets him the 500 year. Like the next GM could get them to worse records. Like, yeah, but it's better
Starting point is 00:36:43 than settling for it. So sometimes you have to have that shakeup. And I applaud the Colts for actually committing to that shakeup at those two positions. So I think they made the right decisions. Even the guys they brought back, you know, Moe-Acox being brought back yet again, I think is definitely the right decision, one of the most underrated players on the roster last year. I even like Drew Ogletree being brought back because he was pretty capable as a pass
Starting point is 00:37:05 blocker and run blocker last season as well. The corner they brought back as well. Cameron Mitchell. Yeah, Cameron Mitchell. was Cam. Cameron Mitchell, I thought he played well late last season, only like 25 years old. So I think they made the right decisions on all the guys they had to make decisions on. Really, my only complaint is just like what they got for Michael Pittman Jr. In this wide receiver market, they probably should have got more.
Starting point is 00:37:29 And that was probably the only time that Ballard just pre was too sentimental when he should have been more businesslike. But outside of that, very good decisions by the Colts in terms of who they moved on from and who they brought back. And we'll see if it leads to more wins next season. Yeah, my main thing is I agree generally with that. Like the guys they retained and the guys they let walk were all, for the most part, the right decisions. I think Nick Cross is a guy for the money he signed with Washington. The Colts could have done that. But again, like Zach said, if you're going back to your hometown area, your hometown team,
Starting point is 00:38:04 like Cross was a commander's fan growing up. There may have been no winning that battle if you're the Colts. So I get it. financially they could have done it, but who knows what that would have taken to pull them. And then I think you let those guys walk and that's great, but you have to show a plan to replace them because it's not like it's not like just anybody is better than them. You know what I mean? Like Zyri Franklin can certainly be upgraded over, but you have to get a certain caliber of player to do so.
Starting point is 00:38:39 Quitty Pay can be upgraded over, but you have to do it. You know what I mean? Like, hey, started for them for five years and has not been replaced yet. Like, that's concerning to me because you're going to have to pull off a trade now because what free agent are you going to go grab to replace him? There is none. Arden Key would probably be the top free agent edge at this point for the most part, unless you're going to rely on like a 32, 33 year old guy like Judevian Clowny,
Starting point is 00:39:07 Joey Bosa, et cetera. I just don't love this plan of attack because, now you look at the draft and you've really struggled to draft edge guys in general, but now you're expecting one that has to contribute in year one decently. I'm concerned about that. So again, it's fine to let those guys walk as long as you have someone coming in to replace them. And I do understand they swung and missed on Trey Hendrickson, and that probably screwed a lot of things up.
Starting point is 00:39:37 But there has to be something beyond that. Like, I've just, it was their biggest need, their biggest area of need going into the offseason, other than needing to make sure they locked up Jones and Pierce. Everyone knew the edge group had to be revamped. And it's probably taken a step back to this point, which, again, they finished tied for 15th last year with 39 sacks. They have a new D-line coach. You don't know how that's going to look necessarily. So I don't love what they've done with that so far. Again, I know it's an incomplete grade because I do think you had to let all those guys walk.
Starting point is 00:40:22 I just wish you were going. The draft is a month away. But I wish at this point you had a better outlook of what replacing those guys look like than what we do. Well, I look at the fact that they've, what, gone. on eight and nine in the last two years. So a shakeup was the right thing to do. Just so you can get some new blood in here, maybe, maybe a new culture, maybe some energy from folks that are, you know,
Starting point is 00:40:57 with all these minimum contracts and none really of any length, that these guys are going to play with a little. more edge. They're a little bit desperate and they want the opportunity to have that one more shot to prove that they belong in the NFL since 99.9% of the players are fired before they're actually done playing. So for these guys to get that shot, it could be, you know, the boost that they needed. Also, I look at the fact that the pass rush ranked 30th. You know, so you needed something on that defensive line. And I'm sorry to state the obvious, you know,
Starting point is 00:41:46 but sometimes there are stats that I look at that remind me that, yeah, they had a problem that they needed to get fixed. And I don't know if, you know, in letting go Pittman and letting go, Zaire Franklin, which were supposedly two of the leaders on the team, you know, sometimes you have to let that leader go just to try and stimulate play with the rest of the players knowing that, look, just because you're a leader, that means you're going to stay here. You know, yeah, as can go at any time, too. So I think the moves they made were necessary, and they do need to shake it up. at the expense, at the expense of maybe going backwards a little bit.
Starting point is 00:42:41 You know, it could happen because you have guys that are coming into a system that maybe on defense at least, that maybe they're not as familiar with. But I'm sure, you know, to me it seems like the Colts put their money on offense. And hopefully the defense can just slow them down a little bit and allow this Colts. offense to just outscore everybody. I will say this about their defense. They do have a lot of big contracts on defense as well, though. Cameron Bynum, Mooney Ward, DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Kenny Moore.
Starting point is 00:43:20 They have their big contracts on that side of the ball. So yes, they're bringing in some auxiliary players for defense, but that's because those guys need to be their top players. They are already paying their players that need to be their top guys outside of, again, they just need to make another move at edge rusher. But like all their money is going into the sauce gardener as well. I didn't even mention sauce gardener. It was also their marquee player.
Starting point is 00:43:47 So I don't know if we can say like Ben don't break with defense this year because like you're paying a lot of these guys a lot of money. They need to step up, you know, and they still need to add more defensive end. There's still time to do it. But as of right now, like they have already made their bed with some of these big contracts on defense. for these guys to make those big plays. Yeah, and, you know, it's the whole issue, I think,
Starting point is 00:44:12 that we're running into this off season where I agree with everybody here that I think the change was good. I think it was good to move on from some of these. But not to make the worst analogy ever, but, you know, if I have moldy cheese in the fridge, like I got to throw out the moldy cheese, right? But I still want to make a sandwich. So I still need to replace, I need to go get more cheese, right?
Starting point is 00:44:31 And I think that that's, you know, where the Colts, you know, not to be mean to Michael Pittman Jr. and Zaire Franklin, clearly they're better than moldy cheese, right? But just because if their time had expired here, if they had gone past their shelf life, you still have to replace those guys that have gone past, you know, Braden Smith, those guys that have gone past their expiration date. And I'm just not confident at several of those positions. You know, even Jalen Travis, we just don't know. We think that that's the right thing, right? And we're encouraged by what we've seen early on, but we don't know that he's going to be able to replicate what Braden Smith did. And to me, that's the biggest question mark here as we've moved forward
Starting point is 00:45:09 this offseason and even into August and September. A lot of guys have to prove it, not just the fact that, you know, Zach, you mentioned the guys that are already known quantities on this team have to step their games up too. Yeah, and I'll be quick at this. Like, you don't have many guys in the NFL who are on non-rooky or vet minimum contracts, right? So when you decide to pay some players, like your Pierce's, your Mooney Ward, your Cambiners, you have to have those tough decisions sometimes where you let a Pitman go. You let a Braden Smith go because it's just not feasible to keep all them. That's why the draft is so important. You have to hit on your draft picks.
Starting point is 00:45:44 That's why Jaylon Travis needs to be a hit for you. I know it's a lot to put on a fourth round pick, but it's the nature of team building. That's why you can't afford to miss so much like they have an edge rusher because they need to have guys who are worth playing. and worth paying at that position. That's why all these high picks like A.D. Mitchell and Juju Brent's, like when you miss on high value picks like that, it comes back to bite you eventually. And the Colts are kind of scrambling a lot to fix a lot of those issues that they had with the 2023 and 2024 drafts.
Starting point is 00:46:13 So it is certainly him working against the grain because of those bad draft classes or 2024 was a fine draft class, but 2023 was a very bad draft class that they're still trying to recover from. So a lot of this is having to plug holes with less than ideal. options and at the end of the day you need the guys that you pay to step up and kind of fill the gaps a little bit besides Zach Hicks believe it or not there is another Colts legend who has a birthday today that and more when we wrap up the Colts Squad show next and we're back on the locked on Colts squad show final time today alongside Alan Pinkett Jake Arthur Zach Hicks I'm Derek Shultz
Starting point is 00:46:53 thanks for being here so I'm not sure if you guys saw this I actually stumbled upon this because I saw a tweet from his brother of him singing in the car. But a big 5-0 and a happy birthday to Colts legend, Peyton Manning today. Also a March 24th baby. So 50 years old for Peyton Manning, which has to make Alan feel hopelessly old. That actually makes me feel pretty old, too, to be totally honest with you, too. But always good to celebrate Peyton in a big way. While we're talking about quarterbacks, you know, this is generally kind of
Starting point is 00:47:29 the news and notes portion. And I'm not always like super, I used to obsess over it, what other people are saying as it pertains to the Colts or other things in the NFL sphere that I really disagree with. I'm not sure if you guys, I'm assuming you guys have seen this. I think Zach,
Starting point is 00:47:45 you actually mentioned something about it. One of my least favorite things about draft coverage is because we have to wait so long for the draft. It's not like the NBA, right? Where the NBA, like the draft happens immediately. You're waiting so long. And I think what ultimately ends up happening is guys just try to be contrarian and stick their necks out for players who they really have no business sticking their neck out for. And I feel like, and this is a guy that I kind of like.
Starting point is 00:48:10 We both grew up in Connecticut. He has triplets. I'm a triplet. The whole deal. But Dan Roloski and Ty Simpson, like, I don't get it. I don't know why we're doing this. I don't know why we're trying to make Ty Simpson into the best quarterback in this class. I understand it's a bad class.
Starting point is 00:48:24 But am I wrong here? Yeah. I mean, look, I'm writing up quarterbacks for the indie draft guide that Jake and I are working on, and it's a dreadful quarterback class. It's a, I am glad the Colts got the Daniel Jones contract ready because, my gosh, if they had to draft a quarterback in this class, I would lose my mind. This would be the Kenny Pickett draft, if not from Mendoza. Right. Mendoza is a good player. I think he's worthy of a top pick.
Starting point is 00:48:49 You know, he put him in the same tier of the golfs, the Bradfords, like those type of good first overall picks. Awesome. you're good there. I don't understand the Ty Simpson love at all. Ty Simpson is tiny. He's been injury prone at the college level. He completely melted down in the college football playoff. In both those games, he was just dreadful all around, especially against Indiana.
Starting point is 00:49:11 He didn't look like a starting caliber college quarterback in that game. And like, yeah, if you want to really bank on those first couple games where he was like, had some good moments. But to me, like he's like six foot, like 205, 210 pounds. like at best you're getting up you're hoping for him to be brock purdy right he's got an average arm he's six foot 210 pounds like injury prone runs like a chicken with his head cut off in the back field when things break down like i don't get it i like he's probably the second best quarterback in this class that's just the nature of this quarterback class but if your absolute
Starting point is 00:49:49 best thing that you're hoping for is brock purdy i've seen some people try to say baker mayfield with him, but he just does not have that kind of arm. Mayfield has an absolute bazooka for an arm. So, yeah, I'm with you, Derek. I know Orlovsky was on the Pat McAfee show today talking about it, where he had him over Mendoza and was just lying about some Mendoza things in there, like how Indiana only had six points going into the fourth quarter against Ohio State when they had 13.
Starting point is 00:50:16 And by the way, Ohio State has like five first round defenders on that team. Like three guys that could be the three best defenders. in this draft. Like, it's a pretty darn good Ohio State football team. So, yeah, and Dose is a good player. Ty Simpson, he's fine. Like, you know, if you take them day two, I think that's fine. Outside of that, do not draft a quarterback in this class.
Starting point is 00:50:38 Honestly, if we're up to me, I would not put a draftable grade on any other quarterback in this class outside of those two. But I have to be a little bit generous, I guess, with talking about traits. But, I mean, we're going to like a North Dakota state kid after that is probably the next best quarterback in this draft. Yeah. Ty Simpson also had Jeremy Bernard and Brian Smith and probably should have looked better having those guys at his disposal.
Starting point is 00:51:03 Josh Waybos, like, Hayden Proff. Yeah, like he had NFL talent around him. Like Mendoza does too. Don't get me wrong, but like Mendoza had moment after moment after moment throughout the, like he checked every box that he needed to. Like I really don't know how many questions you could. have about Mendoza entering this. He seems like a pretty safe player. Like, I don't, I don't know that he's going to ascend to be like a top eight quarterback in the league or not, but like, I feel like he will
Starting point is 00:51:34 float around that, like, 12 to 14 area throughout his career. Like, he seems pretty safe. You know, he's a big kid, big build, tough as they get. He's got, like, the right mental makeup for it. Like, Kurt Signetti, who I don't think just hands up. out compliments all that easily, gushes about the kid and his work ethic and his leadership and all that stuff. He led Indiana to a national championship, which I mean, born and Brett Hoosier here, like our grandparents and their grandparents would be just blown away in their graves thinking about the fact that that actually happened. So your older siblings are blown away than it happened.
Starting point is 00:52:20 Yeah, honestly. Yeah. I'll say, we know, yeah, I say we know IU and Bloomington for going there and partying, not necessarily their football team or anything. But, yeah, what Mendoza just accomplished and what he looks like as a pro prospect, please let's not enter the conversation about another quarterback in this class being comparable because they're not. Well, I guess what I'll say, first of all, is
Starting point is 00:52:49 Stignetti is the reason that a bunch of coaches in college got fired last year. Because they're looking at Indiana and saying, this dude can turn around this team in two years. And here I am Penn State. I got all the resources in the world. And I'm losing the Northwestern. Hell yeah, your ass is fired. And a lot of other coaches that got fired. But to me, Mendoza is the truth.
Starting point is 00:53:15 And I'll preface this next comment by saying I'm not a scout. but I think I got a good eye for what good looks like to me. And when I see Ty Simpson, I just, I see a guy that I think needs one more year in college. And yes, you touched on the fact that he had great receivers, but it kind of takes me back to, you know, a lot of USC quarterbacks got drafted pretty high because they had five-star office of line.
Starting point is 00:53:49 and blocking for them, and they had five-star receivers that they were throwing to playing against three-star talent out there in the pack 12. And, you know, I think he was good. Matt Linerd was good, but damn, who he was throwing to, you know, he couldn't help but be good. So I say that in comparison to Ty Simpson because he did have two more than adequate receivers to throw the ball too. But, you know, it's little things to me. And when there was a lot of pressure, he just, to me, didn't have the same toughness that Fernando Mendoza had.
Starting point is 00:54:27 In fact, Mendoza got knocked the hell out a couple times and said, I'm coming back in and then went and made a play. So I think there is a huge gap between Mendoza and not just top. but all these other quarterbacks that were coming in that showed so much promise. The dude from LSU can't remember his name. No Smyre. No Smyr. Yeah. They were talking about here.
Starting point is 00:54:58 Clubnick, I see some mocks showing the cult's picking K. Clubnick. I'm like, please, I don't do that. I mean, it's like round like six or seven. It's like whatever. But they're showing them picking them in like ground four. Some mock, but that's why it's a mock. Right. But I just don't see it. I would just say that if Ty Simpson was running for office or Loski would be his campaign manager.
Starting point is 00:55:27 Right. Also, I will say this too, like injuries play such a factor in this because, again, Simpson's so many injuries at the college level. I think Nosmire and Carson Beck looked like NFL quarterbacks, but Beck's arm was so bad last year after the UCL injury that he had in 2024. No Smire, his show. shoulder was really busted last season you could tell we'll see you know what that means for them as prospects but it muddhers breaks his leg your guy honestly the best thing that ever happened to him because people are forgetting what he looked like when he actually played uh yeah when he played and the oregon game he played was not impressive uh no faith at all no i do not have any faith uh but yeah this quarterback class i'm like colts do not touch this quarterback class outside of like an undrafted free agent. I am perfectly fine. Give me Daniel Jones. Give me Riley Leonard. I'm fine. Don't touch the rest of this quarterback class.
Starting point is 00:56:24 Draft other positions because they have plenty of needs of other positions in this draft. Well, I mean, I think it just goes to show you either have that guy or you don't have that guy. And when you have that guy, you got to do everything you can as an organization to build a team up to support him and let him go out and cook, you know, because. Because a good, look what my homes has done for Kansas City. Oh, my, there's not enough money they can pay him, you know, to have them in contention year after year after year. You know, and, you know, you talked about Carson Beck.
Starting point is 00:57:05 The reason Miami started winning is because they started using him less. It's like, you know what? We've had a couple good running backs. A lot of screens. A lot of screens. Yeah. Yeah, why don't he did the running back? You know, so I don't see him as, you know,
Starting point is 00:57:24 someone I would rate high. Kid is a good quarterback. He's good, but, I mean, that NFL level, I mean, this year was so, it was so evidently clear who the best quarterback was. And, uh, uh, Signetti couldn't gush enough about the kid. but every time I saw him, all he did was make plays and sacrifice his body. Yeah, I will say Beck would probably be my quarterback, too, if his arm still worked. I just, I don't know if that elbow can get back to what it was.
Starting point is 00:57:59 Like a UCL injury is major. We always talk baseball on here, right? Derek, like get Derek involved here with the baseball stuff. Like a UCL injury in your throwing arm, like for a pitcher, like that's huge. For a quarterback, you could see what it did to Carson Beck. I mean, that final interception against Indiana in the final game was just like that ball died in the air on him. And that's why they had to run such a screen heavy offense. Also because they had Tony that just phenom 18-year-old that could probably play in the NFL tomorrow at wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:58:33 But they had to run so many screens and touch passes because that arm just was not working. Well, I mean, we talked about the quarterbacks in the draft, but the quarterbacks that were free Asians this year, I mean, to me, the best one of those probably Malik Willis that Miami went to get. But I know Tua can play. But I just feel bad for Tua in terms of, you know, the damage has been done with the concussions and stuff. I really like Kyler Murray. But, you know, there's something to be. It's sort of like me playing quarterback.
Starting point is 00:59:13 sometimes. I think that you do, the height is necessary. I think within today's game of football, you don't necessarily have to be a mobile quarterback. You just got to get the ball to hell out real fast. Oh, you're right about that. I just, by the way, let me say, I can't wait for our draft coverage on this show or on the Colts, Lockdown Colts Daily show with Jake and Zach, because Zach's quote right there, he'd be my QB2. dot, dot, dot. If his arm worked. I think it's just that's just a little breadcrumb of what we're going to give you here with our draft coverage. I can't wait for it.
