Locked On Colts - Daily Podcast On The Indianapolis Colts - COLTS SQUAD SHOW: Ravens ROUT Colts | Colts Fail in All Three Phases In Awful Season Debut vs Ravens
Episode Date: September 13, 2026The Colts were absolutely dominated by Baltimore in Sunday's season opener - how big of a concern is it moving forward? With the wound still fresh, the Squad got together to pick up the pieces from a ...truly awful 41-23 loss to the Ravens in Indy's 2026 debut. They play Studs & Duds (the latter category was much larger, unsurprisingly), go through the red flags the Colts showed today, and discuss whether or not the disheartening performance alters their season outlook.Find and follow Locked On Colts on your favorite podcast platforms: 🎧 https://lockedonpodcasts.com/podcasts/locked-on-colts/ 📺YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLdpxJspi1hMh5HL7ExpWOQ Give the squad a follow on X/Twitter @Schultz975, @JakeArthurNFL, @ZachHicks2, @allenpinkett, @colts_hit, @LockedOnColts, and @ColtsOn_SI, as well as on TikTok and Instagram! Welcome to the Colts Squad Show. I'm Derek Schultz. And hey, remember that first drive today?
And I'm Zach Hickton. There's nothing like a good old butt kicking in week one, even if it's against you.
I'm Alan Pinkett, former Euler, and the Ravens served notice to the league that they're going to be here in January.
I'm Will Starloper. I am ready to sim to next season already.
Colts Nation, rise up. It's the Colt Squad.
everything Indianapolis Colts every week.
Covering all the big hits and game changing plays from the Circle City,
the way only the Locked-on podcast network can.
It's time to squad up.
The Colt Squado starts now.
Welcome to the Colts Squad Show.
Today's show brought you by Kalshi for a limited time to download the Kalshi app
and use code locked on to get $10 when you trade $10.
I'm Derek Schultz, long-time indie sports soccer.
I'm joined by a nerd-aim legend and longtime NFL running back in Alan Pinkett,
along with Locked on Colts Daily host, Zach Hicks.
And our new buddy, Will Starlipper, Locked on Colts, hit host.
Jake Arthur over at Lucas Oil Stadium, which, as far as I understand,
is still standing, even though it looked like Zay Flowers was about to burn the place down in that first half.
A very disappointing effort, to say the very least, 41 to 23 in a game that really was never close.
I guess outside of when it was 7-0 or 6-0, I guess I should say.
the Colts in all three phases, really were dominated by the Dolphins.
It felt a lot like the Miami game last year, right?
Just the opposite side of the spectrum.
And that's what we're going to start with in segment number one.
What it means moving forward for the Colts, just, yes, it's just one game,
but I think there were some things that raised your eyebrows for sure with how the Colts
look today, offensively, defensively, and on special teams.
Like I said, all three phases really stunk it up.
this afternoon. Studs and Duds from
week one, I can tell you that the former category is
going to be much smaller than the latter category,
but we'll go through that. And that'll be one of our
features on the post game show every single week
to play Studs and Duds. In week
number, sorry, in segment number three, we'll talk
about the biggest red flags from the performance.
Kind of the stuff to take and
what to throw away. Because again, one
game sample, it's very small. Everybody's
upset right now, right? We're upset,
but we're trying to have like a
rational discussion of what this performance
means going forward, and we'll do that.
we'll talk about, you know, share some parting thoughts and, and the outlook and,
and even maybe I'll put on the hazmat suit and jump into the YouTube comments as well and
see what you got? Yeah, Zach doesn't want that. I don't know. We'll see. We'll see where
we're feeling coming up here in segment number four. But Zach, I mean, where to even begin?
Outclassed dominated. I said it felt like a college game. Like it felt like IU playing Howard
for that stretch in the second quarter, the end of the first quarter and second quarter, like very
rarely in an NFL game, do you see a team get ragdolled the way the Colts did? But just overall,
your first impressions from a bleh performance from Indianapolis. Yeah, I mean, I will say the first
drive of the game kind of went the exact way that I expected. You know, the Ravens came out
aggressive, played a lot of man coverage, and the Colts were throwing the ball all over them to
start the game. And they were able to move the ball down the field at will, finish it off with a really
good Jonathan Taylor touchdown run. And it felt like, okay, cool, we're picking up where we left off.
early last season.
And then the Colts defense got on the field.
Actually, you know what?
Even goes before that because after the touchdown,
the Colts special teams got on the field, right?
Missed the extra point,
allow the gigantic kick return to get them out to midfield.
Then they get the huge play on offense,
and they score a couple plays later,
and that's when the game just lost all momentum completely.
And from then on, it was an utter, utter shalacking.
And there's no other word for it.
It was just a butt kicking.
Like, it wasn't even remotely close.
And like you said, Derek, it wasn't just like watching a college football game.
It was like watching a Power 5 school or Power 4 school versus one of those tune-up games that they play in the early part of the game.
I mean, I really cannot undersell this, that this game was only within three scores because the Ravens had no clue how to line up on offense.
Because they had to grab and hold so much on offense that kept pushing them back.
This should have been what the Chicago Bears did to the Panthers today, right?
there should have been 60 plus points if the Ravens knew how to line up on offense.
It was that bad of a showing, and it was in all three phases.
The defense was obviously the worst.
I mean, they were completely uninterested.
Run defense was optional.
Like they did not want to get their nose in there and make any kind of contact with Derek Henry.
Past defense, I mean, they were relying on these corners that, you know, are getting paid so much money to be these top guys to actually cover players.
And even after the first half, they were having to cover what, Chris Moore, right?
who's on the practice squad with the Ravens.
Go sign him off the practice squad right now
if he's going to be cooking Mooney Ward like that left and right.
So, yeah, these highest paid players on defense didn't show up.
Special teams was just atrocious.
Like, oh my gosh, you cannot lose the special teams battle
as bad as they lost the special teams battle.
That was just utterly disgusting.
And then on offense, like, I don't think the offense was completely inept,
like the other two phases of the game were for the Colts.
but two awful turnovers from your two highest paid players on offense just can't happen.
Bad interception from Daniel Jones, a fumble that really just can't happen from Jonathan Taylor.
Like there's no excuse for that fumble that he had on that game.
Alec Pierce didn't show up and he's, again, another one of your highest paid players.
So yeah, it's just a dreadful, dreadful performance across the board.
Very little to write home about in terms of positives.
This is something where you flush everything about it and you hope to God that they don't show up like this in any other game
because they laid down in this game.
It was very similar to the Drew Locke Giants game a couple years ago, Derek.
And we remember that game is one of the most infamous games covering the Colts
where Drew Locke was almost looked like the most perfect being at quarterback for an entire game.
It's kind of what happened in this one.
So I don't think there's anything positive to really talk about with this game.
And I'll just say this kind of precursor here for the final two segments.
This does, I think, change some perspective going into the final,
going forward. It doesn't make it so okay, like the season's over or anything, but you're building
all off-season saying, we got to get the job done, we have to finish games, we have to do this and do that,
and you're not even competitive in week one against a team with a whole new coaching staff.
A lot of, look at how many mistakes they made because, again, they were, they're going all this
newness they had, they had a new center in there. Like, everything was different for them,
and they still kicked the crap out of you. Like, just absolutely kicked you while you were down
And they didn't even, like, the second half, they had three receivers on the roster.
And they're just smacking you around like it's nothing.
Absolutely embarrassing from coaching to front office for, again, just some of the issues that we thought coming into the game were big issues in the game.
And then the players on the field, like have some pride, especially on defense, man.
Have a little bit of pride out there.
Get your nose in there and try to defend the run.
Don't just get run over for all 60 minutes.
Like, it was just an embarrassing showing.
and I'm hoping that we can flush this and hopefully no other game looks like this.
But man, what a disappointment from this Colts team.
Well, I will say this, that if you are a longtime Colts fan, this is nothing new because
out of 12 years, the only time you won an opening game was last year.
So you should be used to losing the first game.
but I'd rather focus on the Ravens just a little bit.
Their quarterback is a former MVP of the league,
and he played like it.
And then you've got a running back who is now,
what, the third, has the third most rushing touchdowns in NFL history.
Not to mention, he's big as all.
all get out and I know if I was on defense, I wouldn't want to tackle his ass.
You know, and then you have a receiver that just got paid.
And we saw why he got paid because he had 150 yards in the first half.
And then gave, you know, took a break because Hammy was feeling a little bad.
But, you know, I think that the Ravens have a system that's just hard to match up with,
especially when they use all their tight ends.
I saw three tight ends that they used.
And, I mean, they're just hard to match up with.
And the thing, I guess, if you want to feel bad about the fact that they put up 500 yards,
200 rushing and 300 passing, they did all this despite having 10 penalties for 86 yards.
So that's why I said in the beginning.
I mean, the Colts fans should feel bad,
but this team that came out showed you that they have aspirations of playing in the Super Bowl,
and they put it on tape.
And we'll get into it later.
There are some individuals that are ready to burn this tape,
and some that will learn a little bit and be better for it after having seen this tape.
Yeah, and I guess my one pushback with that, though, is like, yeah, the Ravens made a statement today, right?
But what kind of statement did the Colts make today then?
Right?
If the Ravens are showing that they have these Super Bowl aspirations and that they're ready for prime time, what did the Colts say today?
You know, because if you want to be in the playoffs, these are the teams that you have to, maybe if you don't beat them in the regular season, you have to play them tight.
You know, like I'm not saying go for moral victories, but I'm sure the Texans are looking at their game against the bills and saying, you know what?
we played the bills tough for 60 minutes today and they got the coin flip win at the end but so be it right
we'll get them in the playoffs the Colts can't say that about the Ravens right now the best thing the Colts
can say right now is gosh I hope we don't play them again because they'll just keep kicking us around
they got little brother today you know yeah sometimes it's better to get your butt whipped
because you can flesh that a little easier than a tough loss so if you're going to lose
go ahead and lose big yeah oh they certainly listen to that they certainly listen to that they certainly
did today.
Yeah, I'm going to try to be as non-pessimistic as I can.
Let's remember the Patriots lost week one last year before the Super Bowl.
But, yeah, I mean, the Ravens were putting up 50 plus if they didn't have all those
offensive penalties.
And one thing that I've said all offseason is that this Colts roster is good enough to
where I'm seeing these predictions for the Colts to go 5 and 12 and stuff like.
like that and I always thought it was kind of ridiculous. I'm like, we'll hover around 500,
worst case. Like, this roster is too good for that. But I mean, that's what that looked like
maybe I was wrong about the floor of this team with, with how they played there. And I can't,
the most frustrating thing to me was I was so excited for this secondary. And then you have
Zay Flowers on pace for 300 yards before he gets injured. And the constant, uh, third and long
on defense. Oh my gosh. That third and 16.
with Lamar scrambling and getting it.
I'm just like, this was the team,
like this is our full,
fully healthy team, and it was just brutal.
I think what I struggle with the most
when it comes to season openers
is that what the team kind of tells you all offseason
is what you're going on.
You know, you talk yourself into it inevitably.
At least I do, right?
And maybe it's just because I lean optimistically.
So when the Colts tell me that everything is fun,
because they were seven and one 11 months ago and everything's fine and what just wait just hold on we we got our
quarterback back healthy we got our corners back healthy just hold on here just just wait until they get
healthy everything's fine and then to come out and have that sort of performance that that's what kind of
sticks with me where it's like well I've been waiting or we've all been waiting what seven and a half
months for this for that and I think it would be sort of easier to deal with if just you know
Alan, as you mentioned, I think the Ravens is going to be really good.
And I thought that going into this game that the Ravens is going to be really good.
But it would be easier to swallow if it was just like, okay, their best, your best,
they were just better, right?
It was just the Colts were so laughably bad for such long stretches in that game
while the Ravens were good.
And it almost felt like Zach in the second half, you know, contrary to popular belief,
the Colts had the ball down to scores several different times.
Like they had somewhat of a mathematical chance to put game pressure on Baltimore, and they still couldn't do it.
We all know they should have been run out of the building because it should have been 35-6.
Instead, the Colts, you know, even before halftime, I thought to myself, well, if they score here, maybe they can make this a game.
And then Shane Stuyken goes all conservative.
And fourth and one, I'm like, what are we doing?
That fourth and one call, look, I don't think it changes much in this game.
wasn't stopping like me at, okay, I don't want to go too far.
They weren't stopping any of those guys in this game at running back.
But that fourth and one call was so cowardly, beyond cowardly.
I know you're on your own 30-yard line.
You're down three scores in the first half.
Your defense isn't stopping a nosebleed.
Go for it.
It doesn't matter.
Like they went down and got the field goal anyway, right?
Like, what are you doing?
Like, there was that.
There was the questionable challenge where it's like, okay, even if you win this challenge,
it's fourth and an inch with Derek Henry and Lamar Jackson.
You're not stopping that.
Like, come on.
Use your head here.
Like, it was just, they looked so unprepared on coaching.
I thought the players just looked out of it from start to finish.
Like, it's like once the Ravens responded with that big kickoff return and then that quick
touchdown, all the life got sucked out of the Colts team on offense, defense, and special
teams.
And from there, it was just, wasn't even the competitive football game.
So like you said, Derek, there were times where, like, because the.
the Ravens kept taking a gun to their own foot and shooting away and pushing themselves back on
offense, the Colts had mathematical chances to come back in this game. But whether it was cowardly
decisions by the coach, whether it was a horrible fumble by Jonathan Taylor, whether it was,
you know, the defense allowing another 50-yard catch to Chris Moore, like, they just couldn't
get back in this game. So, yeah, it was just, it was just a bloodbath. Like, there's no other
ways to really describe this game. It wasn't even competitive.
whatsoever. Even the injury luck. I mean, they lose,
Zayflowers did a buck 50 and a half and then he was going, he was out.
They were down their top two guys. A converted practice squad guy makes that backbreaking
50 yard play. And it's just like, ah, I, it's hard. It's hard to find positive things
from that performance. I dug and Doug and Doug and Doug, and we're all going to try to
dig some more and find a few because we're going to play studs and duds when we come back.
still plenty to get to here.
Picking up the wreckage from a week one,
from the Colts, 41, 23.
We'll talk about it when the Colts Squad Show returns next.

do on this show is rant and we're going to vent about this one and then we're going to

lone positive in watching the cults get kicked around like they did today against the Ravens. So it's
a little bit of a, you know, trying to find the glass half full approach to today's performance.

We're back, Locked on Colts Squad Show, first post-game edition of the 2026 season in which

I think we have other things to kind of get to in segment three and segment four about like what this means going forward.
But we're going to play studs and duds every week on the show after the show.
And generally speaking, you know, I feel like we can kind of, you know, wins are going to be more studs than duds.
Loss is going to be more duds than studs.
But in this case, I think it's more like a 90-10 duds.
So let's just go ahead and get the duds out of the way here.
Zach, it really is everything, right?
but I think I felt like for the first time that that I can remember,
and to be fair,
I'm a Shane Steichen fan.
I really am.
I thought he looked completely overwhelmed in the first half of that game.
Like, you know,
sometimes we see Shane Steichen put other coordinators in a blender.
He looked like he was in the blender in the first half on both sides,
just completely gobsmacked.
And I can't remember.
many times. Yes, the Colts have had some one side of performance. As you mentioned, that epic one at the Meadowlands a couple of years ago in December. But I don't know if I've ever looked at him as overwhelmed. I mean, that felt like it was just an avalanche. Like the roof was caving in on the Colts there in that stretch late first quarter into the early portion of the second quarter with Stike. Yeah, the coaching was disastrous, to say the least. On offense, for sure, with Stike in his side and just the game management was bad. The defensive game plan, I warned all.
all week. You guys remember me on the early mid-week show, first squad show this week, where I was like,
look, I understand wanting to blitz and play man against Lamar Jackson, but he is not the guy that I
would do that against, and they got burned over and over and over again. And the only about
of success they really had defensively is when they did this like drop eight stuff. They got like eight guys
in the coverage, and they were able to get off the field a couple times. And I wish they would have done
more of that. I think that was a better game plan to go against Lamar Jackson than to, again,
and play so much man against him.
It's just not the quarterback that I would do that against.
And then against special teams, just everything there was just dreadful.
But, yeah, if we're doing, like, studs and duds across the board, I mean, it's probably
easier just to list the studs, right?
Where, like, offensively, I thought the offensive line played pretty well.
The only really amount of pressure they got they allowed was, like, on, like, six-man
pass-rush blitzes where the running back needs to pick up and the quarterback needs to get the
ball out, and the quarterback wasn't getting the ball out quick, and the running back
wasn't picking it up, so they were allowing some sacks there. But outside of that, the O-line,
I thought looked really good in the run game, above average in the past game, pretty solid
showing from them. Jonathan Taylor, outside of the fumble, had a really good game running the
football. But again, when you're running back, you get remembered for the fumbles. The fumbles are
always stick up, so that's just going to be an ugly part of his game. But I thought it was a good game
overall aside from that. Defensively, there's three guys who I thought really didn't hurt the
Colts much in this game on defense. And that was Jonathan Edwards, Austin Adjicay. Tim Smith also,
I think, would throw in there. He barely played so that I think he did pretty well.
There were a few more. Oh, Jonathan Edwards I mentioned, right? He allowed nothing in coverage today.
It was great because he was inactive. Those were the best defensive players for the Colts in this
game. The guys who didn't suit up, certainly are stock up and were the studs in this one, because
if you're a Colts defender and you put on a jersey today, it was not a good showing for you
in this game.
I'm going to, I mean, it's just flash stuff, but
Latu a little bit.
George Gums, Jr. was the other one.
Sorry, George Grooms Jr. was the other one I was trying to make for my joke and I forgot
about it.
No, but kidding aside. And look, you're right.
I'm not going to give anybody a ton of credit for this, but, you know,
Latu, right on this strip sack?
And I thought he made some pressures.
He almost got home on Lamar Jackson, the one that he ducked under.
And I thought that was kind of more of a Lamar play than a lot to.
Am I reaching?
Yeah, Lattoo and Buckner were fine in this game.
That's about it.
Didn't quite reach stud status.
I thought Latu with his pressures was good.
I'm just a general, but yeah, you're right.
Didn't reach stud status, but, you know, there may be a glimmer of hope and Arden Key being on the other side
because his pressure was, I guess, equal to Lato.
It seemed to me like that, you know, the pressure seemed, I guess, a little bit better than in other games I've seen.
But I also know when you're playing against Lamar Jackson, you're not really trying to do a lot of twists and stunts.
You're just trying to stay in your lane so that you can try and contain him so he doesn't.
busts out like he did, especially in that 3rd and 16, you know, but you have to have some kind of
lane integrity when you're playing against Lamar Jackson. But I think Arden Key was a bright spot.
Didn't rise to the level of stud. But on the defensive side, Dudd was unfortunately, Justin Wally.
I mean, they identified him early in the game, and they just kept.
going after them.
And then finally, finally, they put sauce on Zayflowers.
But at that point, it didn't matter.
But, yeah, that's one of those things where they're going to have to go back and correct it on film.
Because you're going to see a lot of teams now identify Wally and try and isolate on him.
And so he needs to play a little bit better.
Zach, why do they let that go with Wally?
Why do they let that go as long as it did before making an adjustment, in your opinion?
My issue honestly wasn't even having like, because you can't really travel with Zay Flowers
because they motion them into the backfield, they motion them into a bunch sets.
You can't really travel a corner with that type of guy, right?
That's just not the type of player that you could travel with.
But you could have adjusted the man covered you were playing to having that robber safety
over the middle because they weren't beating Wally on every route.
the only routes that were beating him were crossers from one side of the field across the other side of the field.
So just have your robber safety robbing that route.
Like, what are we doing here?
It's like, it's not, I know football is a difficult game, and I'm trying to oversimplify it here.
But like, if they keep beating on the same middle of the field route running across the field,
just have someone robbing the middle of the field on that, which they did a lot of last year.
So I need to see the All-22 with that.
One more thing I want to throw in here, and then I'll let Will get his thoughts out here.
I was terrified about this going into the year,
and I knew a team like Baltimore to exploit it.
I didn't realize it'd be this bad,
but I knew a team like Baltimore exploited it,
but teams are going to come out in 12 and 13 personnel a ton this year,
force them into that five-man-based defense,
and they're going to get Jerry Tilleri on the field,
and they're going to run right at him.
And what did they do all game long?
Ran it right at him.
They ran it at him.
Like, watch all, like, rewatch the place.
He is 10 yards down the field every play.
Like it is like he made, I think he made one tackle on the backside of his own run late in the game.
And I was like, oh my gosh, look at him go.
But they're going to do this all game.
They're going to do this all year long, 12, 13 personnel come out and base.
We're going to dare you to put him on the field.
And we're just going to run it straight at him.
And this was the problem with keeping him on the team.
But Will, I'll let you go.
What are some of your studs and dots?
Oh, man.
I mean, it's definitely no studs to add from who's been mentioned.
I mean, that's just a tough one there.
I definitely the one thing I was going to say was was Justin Wally for sure I mean that
completely bought into to the hype he was getting we've called him the X factor of this
the secondary so that was brutal I will say cut the secondary just just a tiny bit of slack because
my gosh did Lamar Jackson just have all day I mean he he's sitting there for 10 15 seconds
so pass rush absolutely was was no help to the secondary today
And I'll also say Alec Pierce clearly, clearly didn't look at full health, which is what I was
worried about coming into this, what type of snap count or what type of rust will be there.
He was really, really no help on the offense.
I wanted to maybe add a slight stud to Schrader, but obviously he missed the extra point.
So you can't really go there, but solid, what, 58-yard field goal from Schrader at least.
It's amazing how a missed extra point can just set a tone.
You know, it just darkened the mood because of that missed extra point and how it gave the Ravens life.
I will throw one stud in here on the kickoff return by Seth.
Yeah, McGowan.
Yeah, McGowan, yeah.
I was happy to see that, but he's a big boy.
so he's not going to break many runs, you know, but he needs some help on his pass blocking, though.
You know, he's got lead in his ass for a reason, you know, so he should be able to, you know,
pick up a blitzer.
And, you know, we're going to need him down to season because you don't want Jonathan Taylor being worn out by pass blocking.
But Seth Lagan, he could improve it.
And that's one of those things, you know, because look, during the preseason, he was blocking fine and, you know, matching up with linebackers and the safety's coming in.
But see, when you get into regular season, it ramps up a little bit, all right?
And if he was expecting the same type of speed in a regular season game, then a preseason game, maybe I just attributed to him being a rookie, you know, because being a rookie, he saw one speed.
in preseason, but it gets much faster in the regular season.
What drew me crazy.
Shout out, though, for Tanner Bordellini giving us one good play on that screen block
for Jonathan Taylor where he crushed that linebacker.
I was pumped about that and then Taylor ruined it by fumbling.
But outside of it was, it was like my favorite play of the day.
It was as excited as I'd been all day long.
You know, the special team's portion of it, Alan, what drove me crazy was,
I think the Colts only actually committed, what, like four penalties,
but I think three of them came on returns.
So it just felt like they were constantly,
whether it was between, you know,
the Ravens moving the ball or whatever else,
they were constantly on long fields on offense
and then on short ones on defense.
So they just, they never even really set themselves up for success.
It felt like today.
And maybe that's indicative of what we saw in the box score
and in the final score.
When we come back on the Colts squad show,
red flags, individuals, groups,
schematically, what is going to bleed over into Arrowhead next week and maybe for the rest of
the season that we are concerned about? We'll talk about it when the cold squad show reconvenes
here in a couple of minutes. What's going on everybody? My name is Ross Jackson, host of the Lockdown
at Saints podcast. And today's Lockdown episode is brought to by our friends at Basque and Lather.
I've been using Basque and Lather's all natural, 100% organic hair care products for my beard for
a couple years now. And it's been a lifesaver because I used to have some bad.
beard care habits. I'm talking over-the-counter shampoo and the beard type stuff that created this
brittle, scratchy and uncomfortable beard that I just had to wear around all the time. But now the game
done change. Thanks to Basque and Lather, I got their beard care starter kit, which gave me shampoo,
conditioner, oil balm, and their hair growth stimulator formula as well. And now my beard is full. It's,
it's soft but strong. And the confidence is on 10. And it's all thanks to Basque and Lather.

Locks on Colts Squad Show following the Colts 41 to 23 opening loss to the Baltimore
Ravens.
And YouTube comment, Fred, no surprise.
it is very healthy and active right now,
but really appreciate you guys being here
and venting, commiserating,
just hanging with us.
We also have a midweek show on the squad show
Wednesdays at 9.30.
So that's one of two squad shows every week.
And then, of course, Jake and Zach,
your first list in every day on locked on Colts
throughout the week as the season is now underway.
So guys,
let's talk about just some red flags
because while, yes,
it's just one game and you want to flush the one game
and you want to go back to kind
all the sayings and then the coach speak when it comes to that.
Zach, you would mention it right off the jump that there were a couple of things that stood
out to you as like even maybe season outlook changing type stuff.
Let's start with kind of how the Ravens approached the Colts offense and really kind
of going after Daniel Jones, which we saw be a blueprint, really starting with that Pittsburgh
game.
That's when I felt like that was the first time that he in the offense looked very uncomfortable
last year and I felt a lot of those vibes today.
Yeah, it was, it's something that's been a Shane Steichen issue.
His entire time as an offensive coordinator, offensive play caller in the NFL is just his
ability to scheme up easy, easy answers to blitzes.
Even when he was like with Philadelphia and stuff, he relied a lot on these like option
routes from his receivers.
And we've seen them do that with Josh Downs.
And when it works, it works, right?
When you get the blitz pickup and you have Downs isolated one-on-one, he's on this
option route, it can work.
But when you're sitting there waiting for,
of this backyard route to win and get open, it can allow your quarterback to drift his eyes,
get hit, and it can lead to some disaster results.
And then you add in bad running back pickups in there, like the Colts have had since that
Pittsburgh game last year.
And really from Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Kansas City, and all them, those teams basically
dare Jonathan Taylor to pick up in the Blitz game.
And he wasn't able to do that in these games.
Today we saw that too with Taylor and with McGowan, where the Colts have those issues.
So, again, I still think they should have been more.
you know,
pressing to get a pass blocking running back this off season,
like Kenneth Gainwell was out there this, this offseason,
and they didn't try to make a move for him,
but, you know, that's something from the offseason for sure.
So teams are going to keep daring the Colts, though.
They're going to keep blitzing Daniel Jones.
They're going to keep bringing these five, six-man pressures
and testing running backs that the Colts have
until they show ability to pick that up and really move the ball.
So, yeah, the Colts offense, I have my concerns with it,
but I'm not, I don't think there's as many red flag to the Colts offense
as there is with the Colts defense right now.
There are some major red flags on that side of the ball.
Starting with run defense, the run defense is like,
I wrote about this in like a predictions piece right before the season started
where it's like it's not just like I don't always want to make it just about Jerry Tilleri, right?
I know that's my running joke now, but like I don't want to just make it about him,
but also the depth players in run defense, even some of the starters, right?
Like I wouldn't call Latu and R&Kee like great run defenders.
like at best they're adequate run defenders, but that's at their absolute best.
Then you look at the backup defensive tackles and Tommy and Tilleri, and it's definitely not what you want.
Tuma Loa had a really rough offseason in run defense.
Michael Clemens, his awareness sometimes on the defense is not great.
So I was terrified with the defensive line and run defense.
And then a lot of these linebackers, albeit very fast, like speedy players,
they're like a lot of them are glorified safeties outside of C.J. Allen.
And if you're still trying to ramp up C.J. Allen, these other guys are glorified safeties.
If they get touched by an offensive linemen, they're not getting off those blocks.
And we saw that today that when these linemen were able to get to the second level,
because they're coming out in 12 and 13 personnel, they're going to run right over these linebackers
and defensive linemen, you know?
So I'm very concerned about the run defense the rest of the season.
Obviously, you're not going to be playing Derek Henry every single week, so maybe it doesn't
look this bad.
But I do think teams are going to be looking at this saying, hey, if we're not,
We get into these heavy personnel sets, we can run over this Colts defense.
And on top of that, this highly paid secondary was bad today, like, very bad.
And we were thinking, like, hey, they're going to play a lot of man coverage this year
because they trust the secondary, and they're going to blitz and be aggressive.
And we saw them try to do that today.
And they got torched.
And it wasn't just eight flowers.
It was, again, Chris Moore was also torching them out there as well.
So a lot of red flags going forward.
But I think the biggest one is just obviously the run defense.
and then what's happening to this secondary that, you know, they're paying so much money to,
they have to be able to play man coverage.
And if you can't do that, then how are you going to find any success on defense this year?
So I don't want to overreact to too much here because, again, it's week one,
and it gets 17 games sample size instead of just a one game sample size, right?
So it's not like, oh, my gosh, the past defense is going to look like this every week,
the offense can look like this every week.
But I think there were a lot of warning signs about this run defense all offseason.
and to have it look like this in week one,
I think is super concerning.
So that's my biggest red flag.
It's just the Colts run defense going forward,
especially in an NFL right now,
where every single team is going out with 12 and 13 personnel
and running it.
How many tight ends do we see get taken in the top 60 this year?
And half of them are blocking tight ends
that these teams were taken because they want to run the ball
out of 12 and 13 personnel.
It's a new meta in the league right now.
So teams are going to keep testing it against this Colts team.
And I just, it was something.
I was so concerned about coming into the year, and it really bared its head in this game against Derek Henry.
Well, the run defense is definitely at alarm stage, you know, because the way the NFL evolves,
they sort of come back to relying on the run a little bit more.
And if you can't stop the run, then you're not going to stop that team.
So run defense, yes, something does need to be done.
I don't know what the answer is.
I think when I look at the offense and the fact that they are getting blitzed a lot is maybe you try to move to pocket a little bit.
I believe the first play from scrimmage was a bootleg where Daniel Jones is getting outside the pocket.
Maybe you do more of that.
Now, sometimes when you do that, you only give yourself half the field to work with.
You can't work with the entire field, but it might slow down some of the blitzing.
And a lot depends on Daniel Jones' health, because if you're going to move the pocket,
then he's got to be willing to run.
And I think he's willing to run, but I don't know if all Colts fans want him running fresh off of an Achilles.
So we would rather have him throw the football.
And I think that the Colts did a decent job of incorporating run.
I know they went like six or seven straight plays before they even gave the ball to Jonathan Taylor.
But, you know, I think what happens with this offense is, you know, I have a lot of faith in Shane Steichen's ability to dissect a defense.
but I think teams have seen enough of it to know where to squat
and where that route is going to end up
and they are ending up so that there's no yak after the play.
So you're throwing the ball for a two-yard gain
when typically that two-yard pass would have gone for maybe seven yards.
But teams are squatting on some of those routes,
routes, which means that the solution there is you've got to get somebody going over the top.
And if Alec Pierce isn't ready to go over the top now, the offense is going to suffer a little bit.
But that's, you know, my little five cents worth.
Yeah.
I mean, I don't need to keep harping and repeating the run defense and the secondary.
I did want to see a little bit more from our linebackers, which I thought was kind of a question mark,
a unit, I guess, going into the season. But I do say, like I said before the week, you know,
our history against the Ravens, at least the past couple of years, like it was always like
surprisingly close a couple of overtime games the last times we played them. And so, you know,
not to have the ability to stay close at least with the contender and the AFC. I kind of wanted to
see obviously a better game plan in general from Shane Steichen, but I, you know, I talked about one of our
strengths being, you know, maybe Stuyken, it's kind of a question mark on like him as a head
coach, I guess you could say. But from play calling perspective, I think that, you know, he's had a
really good history of calling plays. I think that's one of the better play callers in the NFL.
So that, you know, that's something I'd like to see picked up a little bit here is that kind of
edge. Yeah. Yeah. I just kind of want to add one thing here is just like, I think the biggest red
flag aside and run defense, but I think it kind of goes in with run defense, and you can,
you can respond to this too, Derek, but just, again, the rolling over and dying in this
game was the biggest red flag, right? Like, I don't want to mince my words here. Like, they just
got steamrolled. Like physically, mentally it felt like in this game, and if you're a team
that had any kind of aspirations for this season, that just can't happen. Like Will mentioned,
in the last couple matchups, they played against the Ravens, even if they lost the game or
ultimately the talent for the Ravens won out,
they punched the Ravens back in the mouth
in those games, right?
And they played them pretty tough.
And we even saw in games last year, like,
when they went to Seattle with Philip Rivers,
how that was a back and forth game
that they were almost able to pull off.
And it's like, okay, like, at least they didn't get overpowered
or overrun by this, like, much better team.
That wasn't the case today.
Like, they got absolutely ragdolled all game long.
So that has to be, like, the biggest red flag is, like,
where was the fight?
oh, we got out of our scapegoats, right?
Zire Franklin, horrible leader, right?
Get him out here.
Michael Pittman, Jr., horrible leader, get out here.
I'm not even saying those are wrong decisions, right?
But if we're trying to say, like, okay, we're holding guys accountable and we're moving on,
why was the same result on the field, right?
Where there's just this lack of care on the field, you know?
So, like, that's the most embarrassing part, right?
It's one thing to get beat.
It's another thing, though, just to be so physically dominated in a game like this.
Yeah, I think in a lot of ways,
some of this game was a microcosm of some fans' main complaints with the Ballard era.
And that's when things are perfect, like that first drive, it's scripted, right?
You're at home.
You got the ball.
You're comfortable.
It just felt like everything was clicking.
When things are perfect, the Colts can be pretty good.
But the second that they face any adversity, they crumble.
You know, we just, we see it over and over and over with this team.
It just feels like any time things start to go wrong, it just sort of snowballs.
And I'm talking like full seasons have collapsed.
And we've seen that before.
And so that's just what I've become extremely fatigued in seeing, like the Colts just relying on circumstances to be perfect.
Because Alan, you know you played.
Like very rarely during the course of the season, is everything going to go right?
Right?
You're going to have crap go wrong.
You're going to have the fumble like what happened with Jonathan Taylor today.
It's not what we're used to seeing, but it's a backbreaking play.
or you're going to have an injury that you don't expect to a key player or somebody that you're relying on
that you thought was ready for the moment is not going to be ready for the moment. It just feels like when those
things go the other way for the Colts, it's very house of cardsy to me, where it just all comes tumbling
down too much for them. Yeah, absolutely. Well, and especially in a first game when everyone is usually
excited. And, you know, the thing about contemporary professional football is, you know,
your spread is usually three points because usually the talent level is pretty much equal across
the league.
But this particular game showed that there is a huge gap in the talent of the Baltimore Ravens
and what the Colts had.
And so I know the Colts have good players.
And I did mean to mention when we were talking about studs and duds that I was happy
with the play of Keenan Allen.
I think he's shown some reliability in that offense and will continue to show reliability.
But, yeah, we have guys that need to really step up some more.
And, you know, this is going to be a year, I think, what, is Chris Ballard's, what, 10th year?
So I kind of feel, and Carly's second year, I kind of feel like it's put up or shut up.
And this performance did not help.
But fortunately, they got 16 more games to do something else.
Yeah, you're right about that.
I actually went back and looked, guys,
and I asked the same exact question last year after the opener,
even though under much different circumstances, right?
The Colts came out and smacked Miami 388.
But did today's result change how you feel about the Colts moving forward this season?
We're going to talk about that when the Colts Squad Show returns for a final time next.
This portion of the cold squad show brought you by our friends at Calci.
A new football season brings some big questions.
Who makes the playoffs?
Who wins the division?
Who takes home the title?
Calci, America's number one prediction market platform lets you trade those predictions in a live market.
Will Dallas conquer the giants tonight in prime time?
Right now, the Cowboys are currently trading at 60%, meaning a $100 trade would pay out $157 if they're victorious.
from a future standpoint, and don't spit out your drink here.
You know, like Alan said, there's still 16 games left, so just stay with me.
If you want to trade low on the Colts, a $100-hour trade for Indy to win the
AFC would pay out over 3K if it comes true.
Just throwing it out there for you guys.
On Cali, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house.
And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position.

Back for a final time on the Locked-on Colts Squad show, speeding through this post-game
addition to the show, Colts, fall in the opener to the Ravens.
They are now 0-1.
They have not won their season opener, 12 out of the last 13 years.
So back to a losing skid, I guess, a one game losing skid when it comes to these season openers.
But talking about this performance, we already talked about red flags.
So I feel like we kind of stepped up to the line when it comes to this.
But I do think that there's something about, you know, if you were, I'll say this,
in week one, it's all about confirming our own biases, right?
If you were down on the Colts going into this season and you saw what happened today,
you're saying, you know what, see, I told you,
if you were up on the Colts going into this season
and you see what happened today, then you're saying,
whoa, whoa, whoa, 16 games left.
Let's go ahead and flush this.
Like, we all kind of fall into that trap, right?
I mean, I'm getting the text messages from friends
that are saying exactly that.
Some of them are wanting to drive their car off a bridge on 465,
and others are saying, whoa, whoa, just let's relax.
The Ravens are pretty good, so what?
But I think, Zach, you alluded to it in the first segment of the show.
I remember sitting here in segment four, week one, Colts smack the dolphins, 38 to 8,
and really that was like a 55 nothing type game.
It could have been a lot worse than that.
And I think we all said, yes, you know what?
Honestly, that performance, especially the way Daniel Jones looked, does change the way that we look at the Colts this season.
And then, of course, the first half, it drastically changed.
You know, Colts were 7 and 1, 8, and 2 at one point last season.
But does what happened today change things for you, Zach, as far as how you feel about this team moving forward?
I think it does to a degree.
Obviously, you don't just all of a sudden say, like, okay, winless season now.
Like, that's just not how the NFL works, right?
It's a week-to-week basis.
And we've seen, like Will mentioned earlier, the Patriots were pretty much dominated by the Raiders to start the season last year.
And then the Patriots were able to run all the way to the Super Bowl after that.
I'm not saying that's what's going to happen here with the Colts.
But, you know, you have to adjust your expectations when you have a bigger sample.
size. But I will say this. Like, I was someone who was fully prepared not to overreact to this
first game because it's like, look, if they were able to trade scores with the Ravens and it was
fine and the Ravens pulled away late, I could understand that. If the Ravens won by two
scores even, I probably would have understood it. You know, the Ravens are a talented team
and week one can be kind of weird for results. But again, just getting so thoroughly embarrassed
like this, I do think has to change some things, right? Because you at least want to think that
your guys have the pride, I guess, to not let something like this happen. And if they can't even
prevent this from happening in week one, like, where's the pride going to be to, you know, get over
the hump this year and get in the playoffs? Like, I didn't have them getting in the playoffs.
You have them with a nine-win season. But again, I think that this is, it's a very concerning sign
to start the season. You don't flush the entire year after one game because things can change.
I remember, you know, heck we can even say with the colds last year, right?
You don't flush the season even after, or you don't just write home everything about the season after the first eight games versus nine games, right?
Because there's two halves of the season, there's 17 games.
So with more data available, then we'll have a better picture of where these guys are.
But it is insanely, like insanely concerning that the game look like this today.
Again, like you don't have to win the game, right?
Like, you can have a couple losses in a season and still make the playoffs.
So it's not saying like every time they lose, oh, God, the season's over, right?
But to lose like this, you know, one thing I always say on this show, and you guys have heard
me say a lot on here is when you're a team in the NFL, the good markings of a good team in the
NFL is beating the bad teams by a lot, right?
Taking care of business against the bad teams and then keeping it to one score against the good
teams, right?
You know, like you're not going to always win those games.
What happened today was the Ravens beating on a bad team by a lot?
you know it's kind of what we're saying now again it's still a lot of season left so i'm not trying
to flush the whole year but it's very concerning to have a game go like that like you you just
it's not what you want to see there's nothing really to write home about positively after a game like this
you know um so very concerning that's all i can say again i know it said it like eight times there
but um i do think this does change a little bit my perception of this team i thought they'd have more
pride than this and they just didn't in this game i think pride is the key word and i
I think, you know, we haven't had a chance to hear, you know, any of the comments by the players or coaches.
And look, I mentioned the general manager, this being his 10th year.
He has some responsibilities.
Coaches have responsibilities.
But at the end of the day, this all falls on the players.
And if the players have any pride whatsoever, you know, they will write this wrong next week in Kansas City.
and it may not be a win, but it will be just in terms of effort, a better performance.
Because, you know, the players are going to have to go back and look at film and see how bad they stunk, unfortunately.
And, you know, some players can, you know, just flush it and let's get ready for the next one.
But some players will be really offended that they put that piece of stuff on film for the rest of the league to see.
and, you know, can't wait to get back on the field so they can write that wrong.
So I'm really interested in how the players react to this.
And, you know, don't be surprised if there's a couple fights on the practice field or, you know,
guys maybe talking a little more noise.
But that's sort of the natural reaction to getting your butt kicked is you want to take it out on somebody.
if you have any pride, and I think next week will, I guess, determine how much pride this team has.
Because I don't care what the coach is coach.
The players are the ones that make this thing run.
Yeah, I think for me, you don't want to overreact to week one,
but it's definitely tough to do a studs and duds section and really struggle to find
some studs from the performance.
I would say that I have I had a more pessimistic point of view on her season outlook just kind of my prediction was eight nine and I mentioned before not really understanding this floor prediction of people saying five and twelve and now I do kind of see that obviously with how many yeah so and also my thing was we you know we were the number one offense last year you know that there's going to be some some natural regression in that.
that area. But what had me excited at least was the new defense, obviously, you know, the secondary
specifically. And to see so many big holes, you know, run defense, secondary, like just a lack of
like strength on the defensive side of the ball to pair that with, you know, gradual offensive
regression naturally. That certainly scares me. So I go from looking at Ravens and Chiefs week one,
you know, maybe we can win one of those. We have some solid history against the Chiefs beating him
with the Matt Ryan year out of nowhere.
And now I think I'm going into this being like,
let's just like not embarrass ourselves on Sunday night football, please.
Yeah, I think where it changes the outlook for me is that I am usually a benefit of the doubt giver.
I have no more benefit of doubt to give this franchise.
I just, I'm tapped out.
And I think most Colts fans are tapped out now.
Like it is, I think you had mentioned it, Alan, put up or shut up time.
We're even beyond that point.
Like the results have to come and they have to come now.
I'm not waiting any longer.
And no more on, you know, it's been DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart and all these other guys.
You know, everything's fine.
Everything's dandy.
We're good.
We're just a, we're a player away.
We're this away.
All we got to do is be healthy.
We got to be this.
We got to be that.
No, it's got to happen now or else you got to blow the whole thing up because I'm done.
I'm done.
I'm not.
If it's another eight and nine season or nine and eight and they don't go anywhere, then it's over.
and like let's move on to the next thing.
So yes, while I think that today's performance is an outlier in the grand scheme of things,
because we just don't see these kind of blowouts happen,
the cults are too talented to have this happen to them on a regular basis, right?
So there, I'll give you some benefit of the doubt.
I'll give them some benefit of the doubt here.
And I think they could bounce back and beat a Kansas City team that is, I think,
scarier because they're the chiefs and we just default to the fact,
oh, they're the chiefs and they're at home, even though I think they're far less than what they've been,
like the recent vintage chiefs.
So you can bounce back with a big win and you're one in one.
And then I was just hoping that they would get through this stretch at worst two and three.
And I was hoping for three and two.
And that's still to me very much on the table.
But I do think, Zach, that there's a risk that if this thing gets off the tracks early,
that people are just going to jump.
And I can't blame them because I feel like.
jumping too. I feel like I'm on the I'm on the train car right now with my tiptoes kind of going
over the side. Yeah, I feel like I guess the only bit of positivity that can bring to this and, you know,
I'm an eternal pessimist, so it's hard for me to bring this here. But I think the bit of positivity
is like regardless of what the games look like outside of the Jaguars, they're tied for second
the division because everyone's oh and one outside the Jaguars right now. And the Jaguars had their free
space win this week. You know, everyone, everyone in the division is going to get their free space win
against that team. So that doesn't even count. They're basically zero and zero right now with the
Cleveland Browns. But yeah, like regardless of how the game looked, they're 0-1, right? And if you think
about when it comes to making playoffs, you typically have a buffer of like seven games that you're
allowed to lose. So now they put themselves behind the eight ball, right? Now they only get six more
losses if you're trying to make the playoffs. But you still have six more of them, you know?
So I guess if you want to be any bit positive here, no matter what the game looks like, it's still
just 0-1, right? The same as the Texans, the same as the Titans, the same as some of these
other teams around the league that are, like New England Patriots, right, 0-1, same as them.
So I guess if you want any kind of positivity, it's that. But I'm with you, Derek. I do think
just because it's been 10 years of Chris Ballard, now the fourth year of Shane Steichen, I don't
think the fans are going to hang on as long, you know? You don't highly have that thing that gives
you the optimism, especially when you just kind of roll over and die in week one like this. So
It really is going to be put up or shut up next week against the Kansas City Chiefs.
You know, not to mention that.
I think our evaluation has to come after this five-game stretch.
And, you know, internally I've said that I would be happy with two and three because there's opportunities for growth later in the year against in certain stretches of the schedule.
you know, I worry about going 0 and 5, although I don't think we'll go 0 and 5.
But I think another evaluation needs to be done after this five-game stretch because it is a very rough five-game stretch.
And I think if there are two and three after this five-game stretch, I have a little more confidence in what they can do for the rest of the year.
Yeah, it's just you try not to overreact.
but at the same time we're all human right and we've been waiting seven months for a sample to go on
and here we have this one game sample so that's just kind of what we're reacting to but I just go back
you know kind of closing thoughts that we can go around the room here if you're going to sell me on
hey they were seven and one everything's okay just wait until everybody comes back and then they all
come back and then you do this that's why I'm feeling amped up today as are a lot of other people's act
Yeah, no, I agree. I don't really have much more to add to that. I think you hit the nail on the head with that.
Like, if you're saying, hey, let's get healthy again and do this thing, well, this is what it looked like. Wow, incredible. Thank you for showing us this.
So, again, it's put up or shut up next week. And then I just want all of you guys to pray for me in the film room this week because it's going to be brutal, brutal to try to find anything to talk about with this game.
