Welcome to the Colts Squad Show. I'm Derek Shultz, and at least one of the teams I follow regularly makes the playoffs.
And I'm Zach Hicks, and this is a battle between my former love and my current love.
And I'm Alan Pinkett, former Euler. Colts are favored, but does that mean they'll win?
And I'm Will Starloper, fighting the urge, telling myself I do not need to buy a Josh Downs jersey.
up. It's the Colp Squad, everything Indianapolis Colts every week, covering all the big hits and game-changing
plays from the Circle City, the way only the Locked-on podcast network can. It's time to squad up.
The Colt Squado starts now. Welcome to the Colts Squad Show. Thanks so much for joining us,
midweek edition of the show. I'm Derek Schultz, long-time indie sports talker. I'm joined by a
nerd-name legend and longtime NFL running back Alan Pinkett, along with Lockdown Colts Daily host, Zach Hicks,
your first listen every day. And locked on Colts hit host, Will Star Lipper joins us as well. Jake
Arthur will rejoin us and squad back up with us coming up post game on Sunday as we get ready for
the Colts and commanders overseas second year in a row that the Colts are going international.
They had the Berlin game against the Falcons last year, a London game against Washington coming up
here on Sunday. And in segment number one, we'll talk about a big opportunity for the Colts.
obviously to get back to 500, but to begin to sort of grab their bearings again and get on track.
You know, the schedule from here starts to lighten up a little bit, not that the Colts can take anybody lightly,
but we'll get into that and take our first look at the commanders coming up here in segment number one.
Segment number two, the adjustments we liked in week three and what still needs to be done.
I'm thinking about some certain players on the interior of the defensive line.
I know Zach probably knows who I'm discussing and emphasizing those.
players a little bit more how Derry Slayton fits, you know, some of the other things that the
Colts can can do and tweak and work with here as they move forward into October.
What we're seeing from the Edge Room so far, I know if you're on X, you would think that
the Edge Room sucks. It's terrible. It's awful. Firebowered right now. I get that from a
pass-rush standpoint. Edges don't just rush the passer. They do other things, too. So we'll talk about
some of the good as well. Sorry, I'm trying to keep a straight face while I'm doing this because
we're all disappointed with what we've seen with the edge room so far.
But we'll discuss that on the level coming up here in segment number three.
And then squad squibs.
These have been around now for 20-something years.
Are you a fan of international games?
This would be, I think the Colts, I think this is the fourth one, if I'm not mistaken,
maybe the third one.
And then we'll talk about the biggest surprise teams and just kind of take a look
through the first three weeks of the NFL season and where we are.
But, Zach, you know, a big opportunity here for the Colts.
Facing a commander's team that is, eh, I mean, they are kind of,
of perpetually and outside of that 2024 season, at least in the 21st century so far.
I know you're your hometown team as a kid.
But, you know, just kind of looking ahead, which I know is dangerous to do because the Colts still
have a lot to work on.
But, you know, the Ravens and this Texans defensive unit and, you know, the chiefs
and their pedigree, you know, coming up here down the pike is the dolphins and the Titans
and a very, Pittsburgh team, even given the Colts history there.
I do think that there is a chance here if the Colts start playing well and to get their bearings to get right after that 0 and 2 start.
Yeah, for sure.
First thing I need to comment on, though, as someone who's a commander's fan as a kid, saying that they're eh, perpetually eh, is such a compliment.
That is the nicest thing I've ever heard about the commanders.
I would have killed for perpetually eh as a kid.
They were not that.
They were perpetually awful when I was a fan of that team.
But yeah, they've found some success in recent years, obviously with the drive.
drafting of Jaden Daniels, and you've seen them that they've kind of turned a corner when he's
been healthy.
And even so, like, he missed last game and they were still able to pull off that big upset
over the Seattle Seahawks.
So I do think calling them more of like this middle of, like a frisky middle of the road
team is kind of like the best way to describe them right now.
Because when Daniels is healthy, when that defense is clicking, you know, they brought
that Viking style of defense in to take the ball away a little bit and pressure quarterbacks.
I do think they have the good nucleus going forward.
It's just they need some other things to break their way.
But yeah, from a Colts perspective, I do think that this is a good opportunity for them
where, you know, this might be their first backup quarterback they're facing since
Jacoby Brissette of last season.
And honestly, Jacoby Brissette, do you even count that because he started more games?
And then Kyler Murray last year, you'd have to go all the way back to the 2024 season
to find their last backup quarterback that they've played if they face Marcus Marriota this
week.
Now, that doesn't mean you can take it easy because Marcus Marriota is a capable.
backup quarterback who just won a game for them against the Seahawks, but it has been a long time since
Colts have had an opportunity like this. So they have to play their game. They have to control the
football. They can't turn the ball over like they did this past week. But yeah, I think on paper,
this is certainly a game where you want to see the real Colts show up, right? A lot of
ugliness in the first three games, a lot of just battling through adversity against three really
tough teams. I know Houston's 0-N-3, but a divisional game against a top defense is still pretty
tough. You want to see them be able to hang on to the football, put up some points on offense
against what the 31st ranked past defense in the NFL right now is what the commanders are at.
You want to see them really have a get-right game and show a little bit more of a semblance of early
last season where, again, they were just kind of treading water these first three weeks and they're
happy to get to one and two, I think, out of that stretch. Now it's time to really turn on the Jets
and try to recapture some of that glory from early last season. So you really want to see
them start playing their best football now. While you said, Derek, like the schedule gets, I don't want to
say easier because every team in the NFL can beat anybody, but certainly not going against Pat Mahomes,
not going against Lamar Jackson, not going against Will Anderson and defensive end, who maybe's
on the same tier of those guys with how he looked on Sunday. I mean, oh my gosh, he was a menace.
So I think this is a good opportunity for the Colts, but I would say I wouldn't overlook Washington
because they are, again, like a frisky team that can play anybody pretty tough. So
I think this will be a bit of a back and forth game, but again, it's an opportunity for the Colts to get back to 500,
feeling good about themselves, and then they can carry on from there.
So I've got to start out first by giving a shout out to my homeboy back there in the DMV.
Terrence Lardy, Lardy boy.
He and I both, you know, played Little League and high school football together.
And just like you, Zach, we cheered for the Washington team growing up.
Of course, I was able to see them win some Super Bowls.
I started out with the Over the Hill gang under George Allen.
I'm dating myself.
And then had the hogs and the fun bunch.
You know, the thing that was nice about the team back then, you know,
different factions of the team had different nicknames.
I guess the only bad memory is Thanksgiving when we had to play the Cowboys,
and the Cowboys ruined more Thanksgiving than I care to remember.
But this is kind of hard because it is the team that when I was a kid and a,
I wouldn't say young adult, but teenager was the team that would rush home from church to watch
and loved an afternoon game because got out of church in time to see the beginning of the game,
to see the kickoff.
And how ironic, and I know I'm laboring, but how ironic that my dad and I went to a game,
got to miss church because we got tickets somehow, I don't know how we got them,
to watch a Washington game.
And it happened to be against the Houston Oilers.
And you go a few years later, and I get drafted by the Houston Oilers.
So I don't know if my fortune was being told then or not.
But having said all that, it's kind of hard because I find myself sometimes still cheering for the Washington team.
You don't know how bad I want to say their old name just because it was ingrained in me, but I can't say it.
But, you know, now that supporting the Colts, I do like what I'm seeing.
And, you know, winning is one of those things that can be contagious.
And you understand that there's a lot of detail that it goes into winning.
It's harder to win than it is to lose.
But the feeling is so much better.
But when you win, it's like a reward.
so you're willing to put in the extra work to win a football game,
do the things necessary for you to win.
So excellent opportunity because when I look at this Colts team,
they are trending up.
They have improved each game.
And usually what happens is by game four,
you figure out who you are.
And if they are ascending, you know,
they've got an opportunity now.
with this really feisty team in Washington that has a lot of youth.
And look, they lost two games too, but they just beat the defending Super Bowl champs.
So don't think that they're not going to come into the game with some confidence,
even though they have a backup quarterback and Marcus Marieto,
but he is an accomplished quarterback.
He's a veteran, you know, so he.
He's a guy that knows how to manage a game.
And so can the Colts be able to play defense against a seasoned veteran
better than they have against Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes?
So really looking forward to it,
but great opportunity right now for the Colts to sort of start stacking up wins.
build confidence and have an opponent that I'll say is not so formidable as the first two teams,
first three teams that they played to start a winning street.
Yeah.
I think that obviously when you get closer and closer to each game, all of a sudden, by the time
I get to Saturday, I'm like, this becomes this is a must win.
This is a huge get back on track every single week.
I mean, I really do believe I kind of did a little breakdown of like the best case scenario going forward after a huge win against the Texans.
And you look at our next three weeks, Washington, Pittsburgh, Tennessee.
I think if you beat Washington, you're looking good two and two heading into that.
I think if you lose to Washington, I feel like Pittsburgh and Tennessee all of a sudden become must win games.
So you're three and three before you go into that stretch of Minnesota, Dallas, and Jacksonville.
And if you can, you can look at it, you know, on a more positive way through the first three weeks and say, hey, you know what?
Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, those two offenses and those teams in general look like they're going to contend for the one seat at a time like this.
So, you know, you move on to Houston, a much neater game, way less sloppy.
We can handle an offense like that, although they did look pretty bad.
So obviously looking into, you know, yeah, they beat the Seahawks.
but obviously this is a winnable game here.
And looking at, like, again, like Zach mentioned,
the Washington secondary have been really bottom five in the NFL so far,
especially against tight ends,
which is if there's a game to get Tyler Warren going,
it is this game.
They've been pretty good against the run,
but if we can establish the run there,
that obviously is going to be helpful.
And I will say Washington is, I think,
eight and rushing yards per game right now. And you have both. I mean, Marriota is just as much
of a rushing quarterback as Jaden Daniels is. So I'll be interested to see how our, how our edge can
handle that run game. Yeah, the good news for listeners this show, I know Zach and Alan,
waxing poetic about Washington. I grew up a Giants fan, so I couldn't stand any of those teams.
Gary Clark and Art Monk and they always caught everything. And it just, they'd run right in.
And then they'd break like three tackles, go to the ends. I couldn't stand them.
Couldn't stand any of it.
I hated all the NFC East teams, but, but Washington, too.
No, I do think that it's, it's interesting to see, you know, what's going to happen here.
I think there's probably a very small chance that he would play.
But the reports were, at least from this afternoon, that Jay and Daniels are going to practice
and maybe try to give it a go.
But kind of like what you said, Alan, you know, Marcus Marriota is one of those careers that
is really kind of fascinated me.
Like if, if Marcus Marriota was a third round pick, I think you'd look at his career differently
than you do the fact that he was, you know,
a Heisman winner and a number two pick
and played in a national championship game, right?
Because he never became that guy,
but he's been a perfectly functional NFL quarterback now
for a long time, Zach.
Not that he's, you know, an all pro or super threatening out there,
but he's a guy, you know, kind of like Jacoby Brissette
and what he's become, for the most part,
he's not going to screw up, I feel like.
Yeah, I think that, you know, when you look at
just what Marcus Marriott has been able to do for his whole career,
He's, again, very functional, and that's kind of what you want out of backup.
He's a guy who can certainly win a game if you need him to.
But when it comes down to who you'd rather face in this one, I would still much rather face the backup quarterback.
Marriota's a good player.
Don't get me wrong.
But Jane Daniels has that it factor.
There's a reason why, even regardless with all these injuries, if I were the commanders, I would still give him the big contract.
Because when he plays, he's electric.
He's one of the better quarterbacks in the league.
So I don't think Daniels is going to play this week.
He's wearing a heavy, heavy brace.
I know he made the trip with them, but look, every game matters in the NFL,
but the games that matter the least are out of conference games,
especially on other soils.
So if you're going to bench your quarterback, or not bench him,
but have him take a week or whatever, this is the game that you have and take a week.
So I do think it takes one more week before he's back out there.
We see Mark's Marriota likely this week.
But it's still a challenge, right?
Marriota is better than most backups,
and I think you'll be a, you know, a capable player against the Colts on Sunday.
What Colts adjustments did we like last week?
What can still be done?
We'll discuss when the Colts Squad Show returns next.

so pull up this football and basketball season.
Speaking of those coach receivers,
I'm keeping a close eye on Josh Downs, especially,
but also Keenan Allen's catches and receiving yards.
I'm wondering if they'll be slow to catch up
and projecting their production,
given that they aren't star-level players.
I think Allen at one time was, obviously, is not anymore.
And then, you know, Tyler Warren, I think,
is in every week look as well,
certainly from a reception standpoint, if not yards.

This happened today.
My son had chess after school.
He takes after his mom.
He's smart like that.
He had soccer practice as well.
So chess and then like this weird, like 45-minute gap, and then he had soccer.
I have this 45-minute window.
My wife's at work.
She's on day shift.
I got to come up with a meal.
Boom, Home Chef to the rescue, right?
I popped in a 25-minute shrimp and pasta dish.
It was very easy to prep.
Came in one of those tin pans, quick to cook, absolutely delicious.
All I really had to do was get it ready to go, pop it in the oven, bang.
It was done.
No stress in putting a fresh, nutritious, and tasty meal on the table, despite being on a time crunch.

So, Zach, we did see some adjustments.
You were really banging the table for some personnel adjustments, especially defensively, that the Colts employed in week three,
including one particular young interior defensive lineman, who I know that you like a whole heck of a lot.
So let's discuss some of the adjustments that you like that Luanarumo and the Colts made defensively and maybe something that Shane Steichen did offensively from their first win of the season and beating the Texans.
And some of the things that you still think that there's more juice to squeeze, if you will, if you mix and match and schematically personnel-wise, a combination of those two things.
Yeah, I mean, starting with the one you've alluded to here, I think the Michael Clemens injury kind of helped the Colts on a big way in terms of just forcing their hand at playing.
playing more at a Tommy Oadabori as a pass rusher. He's a guy who I've been banging the table
for for a couple years. And even in the offseason, I kind of polled with the idea that like this
could be their second best pure pass rusher behind DeForest Buckner. And so far, that's been
the case for the Colts. I know he has a higher pressure rate and like pass rush win rate than
Buckner, but he doesn't get the gravity that Buckner gets. So I would still call Buckner their best
pass rusher. But I would say Tommy is certainly the second best guy in that group. I mean, he is so
fast, so explosive off the line, when he hits that two-hand swipe, he can get pressure on the
quarterback in under two and a half seconds, which is key in the NFL, because that ball is usually
out by the two and a half second mark when it comes to quarterback. So he's a disruptive player,
and, you know, they kind of only used him as a designated pass rusher in this past game
against Houston. And I'm fine with that. Like, if he goes the rest of the year with like 300
snaps played and like 280 of them are pass rushing snaps, I think that's perfectly fine for the
Colts because they really need to maximize this pass rush, and they will do that with Tommy over
whoever else they put there on the interior next to Buckner.
I think his best role is as an interior guy next to Buckner.
I know some people have said, oh, play him at Edge.
He doesn't have the cornering ability to play Edge.
He's all linear explosiveness, and I think putting that next to Buckner is the best case going
forward.
So, yeah, I think if you want to have any semblance of a successful four-man rush, having Buckner
and Tommy next to each other on pass-rushing snaps is a must for the Colts.
and they finally did it against Houston, and I think we'll get more of that going forward as well.
In terms of offense, I think a really big one was the Colts' lack of explosives in the first two games.
They were really unable to hit pass plays of 15-plus yards in the first two games.
I think they only had a 7% explosive pass-play rate if you count 15-plus yards as explosive pass-plays.
But then you go into this Houston game against a very good Houston defense,
and it jumped up to 19% of their passing plays for 15-plus yards.
again, against Will Anderson, against DeNeal Hunter, against Derek Stingley.
So we saw the explosive pass plays come up a little bit.
They were finding ways to take advantage of their zone defense, attack the middle of the field.
All those explosive pass plays came between the numbers in the middle of the field.
And I think Stuyken is starting to realize that he needs to make that more of an approach with this offense,
rather than testing the flats and taking deep shots down the sideline.
You don't have Alec Pierce.
You don't have the open flat plays to Tyler Warren this season.
So there is going to be that adjustment period.
But I do think Daniel Jones is showing the aggressiveness,
throwing to the middle of the field,
that they can just keep doing that more often,
especially when we're not going to have these weird roof lights in his face going forward, hopefully.
Like maybe he can actually see where he's throwing the ball a little bit in this next couple games.
So, yeah, the Colts are finding some things out.
And I think, you know, this is part of the early part of the season, right?
You want to stack wins early while you're still figuring out who you are.
And then once you develop that identity,
then you can really start, like, rack and,
off the wins. So hopefully week three was the start of something good going forward where,
okay, we found our next best pass rush or next to DeForest Buckner. We found some things
that work in our passing game, despite not having Alec Pierce. I think that these can be building
blocks going forward. Well, if I look at the offense, you know, I guess their first game
against the Ravens compared to the game against the Texans, that offense is a mile away
from where it was against the Texans compared to where they were against Baltimore.
And what I appreciated was the fact that they threw the ball downfield a lot more.
Zach, you talked about the explosives.
I think 15, sometimes 20 yards is the definition of explosive,
but we can use 15 because Lord knows they weren't getting anywhere near that.
And I think that the Colts made an adjustment because if you study the Shane Stiking offense, you see a lot of five-yard passes.
And I see a lot of defenses game planning for them to throw short.
So to get the ball down field definitely did create a situation where now future opponents,
defensive coordinators are going to have to game plan for that.
They're going to know now that Colts aren't afraid to go down field.
It may not be over the top, but they are stretching out that defense so that now Daniel Jones
have a two-way go.
He can hit his long option or a short option depending upon, you know, how the defense plays
because you pretty much put him in no man's land, where before they just squatted on the short
stuff.
Now they can't do that.
And one guy would point out.
in particular that had a better game was Tyler Warren with nine catches.
He had a total of nine catches in his first two games.
And he averaged six yards of completion instead of three inches.
So I like the fact that they're getting him involved.
I love a tight end in the offense.
I know I'm going to sound like a broken record.
But that tight end is the bully in the defensive backfield.
He's bigger than everybody.
They don't want to hit his ass because he's so big.
And, you know, as far as being a first down machine,
although I would say Josh Downs is our first down machine,
Tyler Warren can get you a lot of first downs,
can move to sticks.
So that was the improvement I saw.
And the diversity of receivers that we have make it so that,
okay, who are we going to double?
in this offense. There's really nobody you can double because everybody can catch the ball and
runs good routes and you've got a quarterback who's not afraid to go to the open guy. And dare I say,
LaQuan Treadwell has become a good option also. So, and then I've got to give some props to the
defense because, you know, against the Texans and,
You know, far be it, the Texans offense is a Kansas City or Baltimore type offense.
But there just appeared to be more aggressiveness.
To me, it seemed like more pressure on the passer, you know, a better job of stopping the run.
So those are all things you can build on.
And I think they go into this commander's game with a hell of a lot more.
confidence knowing that they have grown so much from game one to game four.
Yeah.
On the defensive side, I won't touch on Tommy.
Zach, does that cover that?
You're always going to have the unknown when there's no CJ Allen playing,
and maybe we'll be stupid when he gets his chance and is just as bad as Carlize and
Akeem have been.
But I'll still be sitting here saying, hey, let's give him a shot.
but offensively I definitely, at least in the first half, was like,
was very happy with the way that we peppered Josh Downs.
I mean, he was just commanding targets, getting open, making contested catches,
and really showcasing that he can have a breakout season,
especially with Pierce sidelined.
You know, Keenan finally showed up a little bit there,
and LaQuan has made a couple of big plays in each game.
It's easier said than done.
I said in week after the first two weeks that I would really like to see
Tyler Warren obviously improved from 3.8 yards per catch and like Alan said he did get up to
six definitely definitely no complaints there and it's definitely harder to actually do that
when you don't have that Alec Pierce type of deep threat but we could find a way to get him
down the field I think that would be game changing maybe Slayton can help there a little bit
But I think on the play calling standpoint, you know, you have fans, you know, mad about the lack of aggressiveness versus Kansas City, maybe some towards the end of Houston as well.
But I've been a little bit of a defender of the play calling from Stiking a little bit this season, specifically because it's hard when you lose a guy like Alec Pierce early in the Chiefs game.
And you have a good defense in the Kansas City Chiefs and some crazy blitz schemes.
from Spagnolo, you're able to hang 30 and get to overtime without your best wide receiver.
And obviously, you can say the same thing.
Houston, maybe they're not number one defense anymore, but they're certainly still top five to me.
And being able to keep up like that, you know, especially when your run game is getting stuffed
and you're able to game plan all these different, you know, weapons that we have on offense.
I think that Stuyken has drawn up some good game plans here.
Yeah, people did it with Frank Ruff.
in this town too. It's just, I think play calling is under such a microscope that it's an easy
target when in reality, both of those guys, especially Shane, it's far more good than bad.
Yeah. I think in general people, it's easier to blame coaches than players because we don't
buy coach jerseys. We buy players jerseys. We love players. Coaches, you know, we don't love
because every mistake is amplified. Every good thing is given to the players, right? So, yeah,
I do think that sometimes play calling gets a little bit too much.
of the blame. I mean, when you look at Kansas City, Kansas City was blitzing six guys, like,
for half that game. So the ball has to be out as quick as possible. You can't draw up some
downfield explosive play when they're blitzing six guys, right? And then last weekend's Houston,
they didn't have anybody to test outside the numbers. Are you going to run a streak with
Lequon Treadwell against Eric Stingley? Are you going to run a post with Keenan Allen versus
Camarie Lasseter? No, like you have to take what's given to you and they attack the middle
the field. And they got five scoring drives against a really good Houston team without Alec Pierce
and without a run game, really, for a majority of that game. So, yeah, I think they've been doing
better in terms of, like, finding ways to win on offense, which is exactly what you need right now.
There are ways to improve going forward, and we'll see how it opens up against a team like
Washington with a poor secondary that likes the blitz a lot too. Maybe you can generate some kind
of explosives there, but yeah, I don't really have much concerns with, like, Shane Steichen's play
calling right now. Some of the game management I have a little bit of concerns with, but the play calling
not as much. With Pierce out. Sorry, go ahead, Alan. Yeah, I just wanted to just throw in,
overcoming three turnovers to beat that defense is something that shouldn't be taken lightly.
Because in the NFL, one turnover can kill you. They had to overcome three of them. So that
that should be another thing that gives us team confidence.
Yeah, and it was only 19 points, but it was five scoring drives.
And you would have had seven scoring drives, if not for the Yolo ball interception and the strip sack there late, which both can't happen.
Again, you can't take the turnovers out.
But I think all things considered when you look at that Texans unit, I think that effort is actually going to age well.
I think it's already looks great because we know how good that defense was.
But I think the Colts did a lot of good things offensively while under constant duress on Sunday, even if they were.
we're fortunate to kind of come from ahead and hold on to win that game.
We come back on the Colt Squad Show.
We will get into what we're seeing from the edge room so far.
The good, the bad.
There is some good, by the way, the good, the bad and the ugly.
We'll discuss when the Cold Squad show returns next.

rolling right along here halfway through i gotta bring everybody back our colt squad show thanks so much for joining us
jake arthur will rejoin us coming up and i just hit the camera thing i will get back on here here shortly sorry about that jake arthur will rejoin his post game
he is not making the trip to the uk but the good news is he will be here with us to react to colts and commanders
because we are your place for live post game colts reaction let's talk about that edge room so i understand that edge play
goes beyond just looking at sack totals.
But if you are to look at sack totals,
the Colts actually off to a semi-decent start in that area.
As a team, they have seven total through three games.
The problem is that only technically one of those,
and their two halves, come from either an edge player.
Leatu, Latu has half of a sack, and so does Arden Key.
The rest of them come from interior alignment,
even Jerry Tilleri, Allen's boy,
I won't mention what Zach thinks of Jerry Tillery
has a full sack this season,
which is something that Latu doesn't have.
Now, I know he was dealing with the tweak and the chest muscle.
I think they came to find out that that was like some sort of a bad bruise
contusion type deal there.
And look, we're only three games in and it's still year three.
So there is still some rope left here for Latu.
But let's start there, Zach.
I mean, this was the first defensive player taken in the draft.
I think in a lot of ways Latu is the victim of,
the perception of the players that came before him.
But that said, you know, the Colts can't sit around and wait forever.
You know, if you're a dynamic edge player game record type like a Will Anderson Jr.,
you reveal that seemingly pretty early in your career.
And so far, that has yet to be revealed from Laotu Latsu.
So I know he's been good in some other areas, but where the Colts need him to be is
they need him to be a game record, not Quitty Pay Part 2.
And I feel like he's a little bit more of the latter than the former.
Yeah, I mean, I will say he's much better than Quitty Pay.
and he's a very capable player on this defense,
but I think we're in this really weird dichotomy of, like,
the coaching staff views LATU one way,
and the GM viewed LATU in a different way.
With this coaching staff,
they have him being like this strong side defensive end,
who's going to be a really good run defender.
He's going to be powerful, contain rusher,
and pass rushing situations,
and he's going to contain that pocket
while those interior guys are really unleashed and let go to work.
So in one sense, it's like, it's hard to get on Latsu too much because he's not really able to freely rush too often off the edge, right, because of the scheme.
And before people in the comments say, okay, so the scheme's holding him back, I think this is the best role for him, though, because, again, my big issue with taking him 15th overall, he's not bendy.
He was not overly powerful, and he's not a finesse rusher.
Like, he really doesn't have this, like, number one pass rusher skill set.
He was winning in college with his hands and because he was just much older and more developed than a lot of these poor tackles in college.
So he was able to rack up sack numbers that weren't going to translate in the NFL.
So we've seen him be solid.
And I think he's a rock solid.
Like I would say, honestly, this season he's been a top five defender for the Colts.
It's just a lot of that impact that he's brought has been in the run game where he is outstanding in run defense this season.
He sets a really hard edge, takes on pullers exceptionally well.
We've seen the stops in a couple of these games
be really high leverage and high moment stops as well.
Like I think there is a good player.
He's a really smart and savvy player too,
like play action where they roll out to his side.
He almost always keeps his contained
and forces quarterbacks into bad decisions.
So very, very usable player
and a player that I want to have on this team,
is he the 15th overall pick superstar pass rusher though?
No.
And I don't think he's going to be that.
I think the best role for him
is what the coaching staff is doing with him,
which is contain rush.
If a quarterback tries to escape to your way, you can use a counter and get off and finish the sack.
But keep those quarterbacks in the pocket.
Let Tommy or Buckner, whoever is one-on-one block, just make that impact play and then clean it up from there.
So, you know, it's such a weird dynamic with it, though, because it's like he's not going to live up to what the GM took him to be, but I still like him.
Like, he's a good player.
It's better than what quiddy-paid.
It's the best edge rusher that Chris Bowdo has ever drafted.
But is it great?
No.
he's a good player, you know?
So that's kind of where I'm at with Quiddipa, with Liatu Latu.
And overall, this edge rush room is just, it's fine, like below average.
I will say one thing that's pretty concerning.
And again, part of this is the scheme because it's contained rush on the outside and let
the interior guys go to work.
But they have four pressures on late downs this year.
The whole edge room combined has four pressures on late downs compared to like Tommy
and Buckner, who are like,
Yeah, I think Buckner's at like 10, and I think Tommy's at like five or six.
And Tommy's only played 32 snaps on pass rushing snaps this year.
So, again, part of this is what the scheme wants them to do.
But, yeah, these edge rushers are, you don't have a Will Anderson.
You don't have a Trey Hendrickson.
Like, these are not quick winners.
These are not easy winners.
They are role players.
And Latu is maximizing that role, and he's playing that role exceptionally well.
But, again, you don't take a role player at 15th overall.
So it's a weird back and forth I go with it.
But overall, I do think Lottu's a fine player.
Like, I really don't have many negatives to say about him.
It's just the coaching staff is using him the best way that he can be used,
because I think if he was being used the way that Chris Baller thought that he would be,
then he would be a letdown because I don't think he's this, like,
weak side defensive end pass rush specialist because he's just,
he just doesn't have the traits for it.
And he never did.
So thank God for the interior portion of the defensive line,
because they are bringing the heat.
They're bringing the pressure.
When I watch LATU run up field,
it kind of reminds me of an old Titans defensive in,
Javon Kurs, who was so explosive and would get up field,
but would ultimately run by the quarterback.
And I see that from Lattu.
And when you look at a Will Anderson,
yeah, he's explosive and gets up field,
but he knows how to turn.
turn that shoulder and veer right into where the quarterback is.
So third year in, I anticipated seeing more of that from Latu
because I'm sure you get tired of running by the quarterback,
you know, because, you know, you might as well just when you go by say hi or something.
And Arden Key, I've liked what he's done.
I would say that although the stats don't show it, they're still threatening the quarterback,
but there's a lot of room for improvement.
But I just go back to the interior because the best thing about the interior is that's in the quarterback's face.
That affects his vision, you know, and maybe a quarterback feels like, well, I can't jump out.
side because this guy who's already passed me is going to swing back around and tackle me.
So this is a good week to show what they have against a quarterback in Mariotta that is kind of
skill, still possesses the threat to run, but is going to be looking downfield first.
But, yes, I would like to see better technique from the edge room instead of just running by the quarterback.
Yeah, I don't actually have too much to add to that.
The pass rush, obviously, pass rush win rate is 29th in the NFL right now.
Run stop win rate is 31st.
Just the D-line as a whole.
I also agree, you know, LATU being being dragged.
as high as he was, you're always going to have, like, extremely high expectations.
And, you know, certain fans, you know, kind of visited the bus category, which I would say
that's a little overboard.
You know, he's a good role player, maybe slightly overdraft.
He actually does have, obviously, he doesn't get the attention that Buckner gets, but he does
have the second best pressure rate on the team outside of the goat, Tommy.
Yeah, Tommy's been outstanding this year.
And I think Tommy's up to like 18.8% pressure rate is what he's at, according to
Sumers.
LATU was at like 11 as second best.
Yeah.
So, yeah, LATU is a fine player.
Like, it's just, again, he would look so much better right now if they would assign
Trey Hendrickson this offseason, which they were intending to do, right?
They're still sitting on $30 million in cap, which is what Hendrickson's making right now.
So that's what they were intending to do because I think he would just be so perfect as
the Robin instead of Batman. And I just don't think that he is the Batman. It's just what it's
going to be. So yeah, the edge room has been kind of disappointing. But I mean, Derek, this is
something we complained about all offseason, right? Like, yeah, I don't think it's a surprise,
right? But I do think that there was some hope, though, that this would be a bit of a leap for
Latu. And maybe this scheme is not allowing that leap to happen. But, you know, still,
I do think that it's tough for fans when something is advertised as something,
and then it becomes something else, which is still functional and still productive,
but is not what it was advertised as.
You can understand why people are like, hey, what the heck,
especially when you see somebody like Will Anderson, Jr.,
what he did last week, and you're thinking, well, I want that,
and all the draft capital that the Colts have put into that room.
But that's kind of the whole problem, isn't that?
I mean, you said that it would be great if he was a Robin,
instead of a Batman. It would be great if Arden Key was a rotational pass rusher instead of your second
guy. But that's the inherent Colts problem seemingly in multiple areas during this Bowerd regime,
is that, you know, this guy would be great as your fourth receiver. When he's your second receiver,
that's a problem. And it just feels like that issue keeps popping up over and over again,
whether it be to injuries or ineffectiveness of other guys or whatever it may be. And I think that's
what leads to so much frustration from the fans. Yeah, I get it because, you know, I do think
there's always this like big jump to where if a player doesn't pan out to be a superstar in round one,
then they're a bust. And I, and I agree with Will. Like there's, oh, did we lose Zach on the frozen?
Technology is a wonderful thing. We know he just came back. Okay. Okay. Sorry. I was going to say
with players where we think that. Hold on, but now, now we're losing the audio. Yeah. So we had
you know, wise, we started losing the audio wise. So we'll, we'll, we'll have Zach come back in here.
when it comes to that. Look, I hit my, anytime I even breathe on my camera wire here,
that thing pops off too. So, yeah, I think there are all kinds of players that become,
you know, we were just talking about Marcus Marriota, right? Sometimes your draft status,
look at Alex Smith's career as a quarterback. If Alex Smith was a third or fourth round pick,
we'd all be talking about, man, what a really plucky, nice career that that dude had. He stuck
around forever, but he was the number one overall pick. And so you thought yourself,
you know, Alex Smith, yeah, he was okay.
whatever. Sometimes that kind of dictates how you end up being viewed fairly or unfairly.
And I think, you know, so much was made about, I remember watching and the Colts do a great job
with this with the first pick, right, the video production series that they do in-house.
And Bauer just saying over and over and over again, we got the best defensive player in the draft
and how much was made of. He was the first defensive player, take his first off the board.
And I get that he was 15th and not fifth.
But I just think that there were, you know, there are expectations that build from
that. And if Leotilatilatu is just a, you know, a functional, solid NFL player and a top
five level defender on an 11 player defense, that's fine. But I don't think a lot of fans are
going to be super duper happy about that. Yeah, that's just kind of the nature of it right now.
And I think that there's just been this weird disconnect with the coaching staff and the general
manager in terms of like what they think these guys can be or something. I don't know. It's just
feels like since i mean when's the last star player the cults have drafted right like star player like
outside of offensive line because they can draft offensive lineman for sure like
Leonard yeah Leonard right or Taylor right Taylor Taylor yeah Taylor yeah Taylor at his position but like
outside of that like they've drafted players with like good value on day three players on day
two with some good value um and even like players who are not great in round one but like still
perfectly fine players but they have not drafted that true like star difference
or like when the Eagles in that same lot to draft taking Quinnian Mitchell and Cooper Dejean, right?
We're huge pieces for their team going forward.
Those are like star players.
The Colts just haven't had a draft player like that in a while.
Players who haven't panned out to be that caliber of players.
So that's kind of how you get stuck in this eight and nine bubble.
I guess they've been in the last couple years.
20 years in, what do we think of the international games?
This will be the fourth one for the Colts, by the way.
I mentally repressed one of the previous three.
We'll talk about that when the first.
Colts Squad Show returns for a final time next.
This portion of the Colts Squad Show brought you by Game Day Men's Health.
A quiz on your phone and a box at your door isn't a clinic.
When it comes to men's health, things like energy, sleep, drive, and how you feel day-to-day deserves more than just a questionnaire.
Game Day Men's Health is a real in-person men's health clinic with more than 430 locations across the U.S. and Canada.
Men can meet face-to-face with a licensed clinician, get labs drawn in the office, and receive.
receive initial results in as little as 15 minutes. Game day looks at the full picture, your symptoms
and your lab results before developing a treatment plan. And because they continue testing and
evaluating, care can be adjusted over time based on your data. Going to a clinic can be a hassle.
And it's also something that I know as men we don't really like doing, right? You're taking care
of your spouse. You're taking care of the kids. Hell, I put my 14-year-old Shih Tzu mix in front of
me, right? Oliver is his name, by the way, and he's a very good boy. You got to take care of
yourself. You got to get tested for things. You got to look at your health. You got to be proactive
about that. And Game Day takes the hassle out of it, and they also don't make it into a huge deal,
right? Convenience is important. We mentioned over 400 clinics in the U.S. in office testing,
comfortable, discrete environment. Game Day men's health brings all of that to the table,
and new patients can book a complementary test and consult easily and conveniently.
You can do that today.
Book your complimentary test and consult at gameday men's health.com.
That's game day men's health.com.
Back for a final time on the Locked-on Colts Squad Show.
Appreciate you being here as we get you set for Colts and commanders.
I'll mention it again.
We are your place for live post-game reaction to each and every Colts game all season long.
Keep it locked on, locked on Colts Squad show.
We will be with you shortly after lunchtime, which will be nice with that 930 kick overseas.
So guys, as I mentioned, this is the fourth all-time regular season game that the Colts
have played overseas.
They had a couple of preseason games, including that one in Tokyo, where Edron James gave the
all-time greatest sports quote, in my opinion, in Indianapolis sports history,
saying that he didn't want to make the trip because the closest he wanted to get to Japan was
Benny Hana.
But anyway, the Jaguars game in London, which the Colts, of course, lost because anytime
they don't play the Jaguars in Indianapolis.
It's a loss.
Falcons last year in Berlin,
commanders this year.
And then I had completely forgotten about this game.
This was a miserable game to watch.
The game against the Patriots in Germany,
106.
Yep.
Just an awful game.
Whoa, whoa.
We had the Isaiah McKenzie,
the mountain mama take me home,
whatever.
The whole crowd was singing that John Denver song
and he returned it out to midfield during that.
all pumped waving up the crowd like that was a great moment um i've got like 20 years of colts games
up here and i just i think i mentally repressed that game it was so bad do you not remember
whoa whoa you don't remember the ice the game putting the game on ice gardner meant you off his
back foot down the right sideline a diving josh downs put that game away and they'll yeah will
remember is will knows i don't i don't i even remember the brock osweiler um jacobobie bursette thursday night
football game in 2017. You guys remember that one at Lucas Loyal Stadium? Two miserable teams.
I think they were both like three and 12. Like I remember that game. I remember some details of
that game. I have no memory. It was 106. I remember it was a bad game, but that's all it was.
You know, like 20 years of this. I believe they started this in 07. So this would be the 20th season of
these international games. It's not just been London, right? Mexico City. You know, we saw the game in
Rio. I understand what the NFL is trying to do. The NBA had this right.
They got him this early about getting their game out there in Asia and other countries besides the U.S.
And I think the NFL was a little late to the party.
While logistically, I think there were always be some more headaches than you get with a basketball game or even a baseball game, which they've tried to take overseas, Zach.
What's overall been kind of your reception?
Is the novelty worn off?
Does this suck?
Do you hate it?
Or do you kind of like the quirkiness of playing an international game and mixing those in every once a while?
I go back and forth on it.
I think they do some things really well with it and some things really poorly with it.
One, to talk about some of the good things, I mean, just the fandom that's out there.
Like, there's such an unexplored fandom across the world when it comes to the American football, right?
Because it's largely an American sport, right?
We do have leagues across borders and all over the place as well.
But, like, this is a very, like, North American sport.
We have the CFL and the NFL in the NFL and college football, obviously.
like those are the big draws for this sport.
So just seeing like the fandom show up in like the German, I mean the German fans are
amazing, right?
When they, I love the Germany games so much because those fans are incredible out there.
I think Australia turned up really well.
I think a lot of the South American and Mexico City games go really well too.
So I love the fanfare of it.
I love just broadening the game.
I think Goodell has always done a good job at trying to get that game broadened to different
demographics and different people.
but the way they handle it, I've never really been a big fan of.
One, they're being a designated home team in these games,
so someone loses a home game has always been so weird to me.
Like, always, I feel like this, especially with the 17th game season,
make the 17th game like a neutral field.
Like every team gets one neutral field or something at least,
and there's no home or road team in that game.
So nobody, there's no one team getting nine home games,
another team getting nine road games, right?
So it's nice and fair.
On top of that, I do think that there should be a,
mandatory by, at least after the road game overseas or when these teams are going overseas,
because that kind of travel can really wear on a team.
And we've seen it with teams coming back quickly from those games being really sluggish and
sloppy, especially for the Colts.
I'm really worried about how they're going to look against Pittsburgh, right?
When they come back from London and they're going straight to Pittsburgh right after that,
I do think that's going to be a bit of an issue for the team.
And then, yeah, I mean, this mostly goes into the line of other complaints ahead of the NFL.
should be two bi-weeks throughout the season for each team instead of one by-week.
And then if you're going to do these international games, you guarantee to get one after these games.
So I just think they could handle it a little bit better.
But overall, I like the idea of it.
I'm not a fan, though, as of right now, putting a team over in Europe or in Australia or whatever.
Like, if you're going to put a team that's not in the United States, put it in either Canada or Mexico City,
don't put it overseas.
We don't have the capabilities for that right now.
unless you're going to add extra buy weeks and such like that.
But yeah, overall, I like the idea of it.
I like expanding the game.
I will say, like, if you only follow football, it's crazy for me to say this,
but if you follow other sports leagues, you'll understand.
Goodell's probably the best working commissioner across all sports currently
because he knows how to market these things and he knows how to make football king.
And he's even expanding his reach across borders, across oceans,
and he's making football even like a bigger market across the world.
So I think it is an overall good thing.
I like the idea behind it.
I just think the execution could be a bit better.
But again, when you watch these Germany games and you see the German fans out there, it's pretty fun.
Like, I really do enjoy it.
I wish we could give them a better product because, again, we're sending tired players on bad fields out there.
We should have like a universal like field requirement and buy weeks and stuff to make it better.
But they still turn up nonetheless.
And it's a fun time.
Well, I love the fact that it does.
grow the game. It will never be as big as soccer is or as everyone else in the world calls it
football. But I do like the fact that the game is being marketed to other places and keep in
mind, the United States population is only 4% of the world's population. So if you're going to
grow your business, it has to be done on an international basis. And I think it's fine. And I think it's
fine that they keep it the way it is now. It's a novelty. I do not foresee playing 10 to 15 games
in London. I don't think that would work, but because there's maybe one or two in a specific
given place, that is, it's like Brazil Super Bowl or London Super Bowl. It's something that's
appealing to that group of fans. But if you play more than one game,
in a different country, then they're going to say, please bring back soccer.
So not crazy about the travel and the logistics of it all because as a player,
you know, some players will complain about going from the East Coast to the West Coast
and vice versa and the jet lag that's associated with that.
Now, how many hours did the teams have to fly to get to Australia?
it was like, I don't know, a day in the air, almost seemed like.
Yeah.
So something like that, you can really harm your brand of football because, you know,
rest that has been proved, just like nutrition, rest is vital to get peak performance.
And flying all over the globe, you're not going to get peak performance.
So I'm indifferent to it.
I like the fact that it draws a lot of people, but I don't like the effect on the players.
And again, I think, you know, one game a year in one of these countries is fine.
Multiple games, it probably won't grow the sport as much as they want.
Yeah, so I actually, about a month ago, a little before the season started, before Austin Echler signed with the commanders,
I was able to get on a little call with him.
We were talking fantasy football.
So I asked him on his opinion on this new franchise and kind of the implications there
if it were to be out of the country.
Obviously, his thoughts were from a money and business standpoint.
It makes complete sense for the NFL.
And as a player, you know, he talked about obviously adjusting to the time,
adjusting to the jet lag.
And it depends on the city or the location.
and the field and facility.
But he said, you know, from a player standpoint,
some of those fields and facilities that they travel to
are just, like, not good quality
compared to the NFL fields that they play on.
So he said players kind of put some worry into that a little bit.
But in terms of experience, he's like,
it's really phenomenal going to see, like,
all the fans there that don't get to see football,
all the crazy jerseys that you'll see.
So I was one of my first of my friends.
From my point of view, aside of all that stuff that he talked about,
exactly what Zach said about losing a home game would make me annoyed.
Thank God the Colts are away this time.
And then obviously, again, currently, I mean, last year, I think those games overseas,
a lot of them were ugly.
I mean, I remember off the top of my head, like Broncos and Jets last year,
obviously Colts and Patriots that were like, those,
sometimes those players struggle with that.
So that's a pretty big advantage for a new franchise if that were to start.
And obviously, like, the next week as well.
But one thing I did say is a selfish fan that watches football from one to seven and then Sunday night.
I love the weeks when I get an extra game at 9.30 a.m.
Yeah.
Yeah, especially, I mean, look, to be selfish here, we're going to be done our work by like 1-something p.m. that day.
We'll get a whole Sunday afterwards.
It would be great for us.
But I will add this.
And this is, you know, Alan and I always sneak this in in the last segment when we talk about the,
the money of the NFL, but like, I do think part of this is the NFL wanting the marketing
and wanting the exposure overseas without actually investing into these facilities overseas
because, I mean, they are printing money.
This NFL is printing money.
It makes so much money, right?
Invest some time and resources into these facilities and these fields, and I'd be way more
on board with all this stuff they're doing out there.
But because it's like, oh, no, we want all the fanfare, I want to collect all the revenue
out there, but we don't want to, like, invest in the stadiums there. They have to provide the
stadiums, and the stadiums are soccer fields that are just not equipped for these massive, massive
athletes that run as fast as they do. That's where you get some of the mistakes and some of the
ugly football. So I would love to see the NFL invest in it, but then again, I'd also love to
see them invest in a developmental league and invest in a lot of other things that, you know,
the owners typically don't go for. So that's going to be your mini-rant event against the wealth of
the NFL and hoarding it.
instead of actually investing in their product here, I guess.
Well, they tried NFL Europe.
How long did that last?
Yeah.
That was your era, Alan.
That was early 90s, right?
I remember, yeah.
Frankfurt Galaxy and Barcelona Dragons or something.
There were a couple of teammates.
I remember I had Pro Set made cards of some of the NFL Europe teams as well.
What I've always gotten a kick out of is how it really builds,
how hype they get and it builds into a crescendo when somebody's about to kick a field goal.
like the European fans get super geeked up for that.
They love to see the balls get kicked because that's what they're used to.
And I don't know.
I've always found that kind of quirky and fun.
But I will say most of the same, it seems like the playing surface.
It's like the playing surface last year in Berlin was fine seemingly.
I know there's been some issues over the years in some of those games.
But you're right.
I mean, venues-wise, I mean, we're talking like 200-year-old soccer stadiums
or even longer than that in some of these cases.
And it's a little hard to kind of retrofit all of that.
