Welcome to the Colts Squad Show. I'm Derek Schultz, and the terrible towel is lame. There, I said it.
And I'm Zach Hicks. And will we see Carl Lawson before we see George Gums Jr. this season?
I'm Jake Arthur, and we're going streak into Pittsburgh, baby.
I'm Alan Pinkett, former Euler. And the Steelers are favored, but is Vegas telling us that they're going to win?
Colts Nation, rise up. It's the Colt Squad. Everything Indianapolis.
as Colts every week.
Covering all the big hits and game changing plays from the Circle City the way only the
Locked on podcast network can.
It's time to squad up.
The Colt Squad Joe starts now.
Welcome to the Colts Squad show.
Today's episode brought you by Fandul.

Every week, check the Fandualt app to see what's waiting for you.
I'm Derek Schultz, longtime indie sports talker.
I'm joined by an or name legend in longtime NFL running back in Alan Pinkett along with Lockedon
Colts Daily co-host.
Zach Hicks and Jake Arthur, your first listen every single day.
Locked on Colts hit hosts.
We'll Star Lipber will rejoin us for Sunday's postgame show after Colts and Steelers.
And speaking of Colts Steelers, that's exactly what we're going to talk about tonight.
Although we'll start with some in-house topics.
We'll do the housekeeping portion.
How about that through the first two segments of the show?
Zach talked about it earlier today.
It's not been a secret.
Where is C.J. Allen, right?
The folks on the street are wondering, what is the deal with the Colts?
first draft selection from this 2026 class.
We'll dive right into that in segment number one,
talk about where he could be right now,
where the coaching staff thinks he may be,
and whether this is a sign of a disconnect in the Colts organization.
In fact, in segment number two,
we're going to lean exactly into that about not being on the same page
and not being able to pick a lane.
And, you know, it's one thing to disagree, right?
But at the end of the day, you get everybody in a room,
they need to pick a direction and all go in that direction.
and it feels like the Colts seemingly have a lot of trouble with that,
particularly with young players.
I'm not going to name any names,
but you guys might know who I'm talking about,
a fairly high-profile draft pick from the past couple of years.
We'll talk about that in segment number two.
Then we will take our first look at the Stewards.
I put a look back on the history of this series.
I think we're just going to peak because I've done this on the show before,
but you look at Stewards Colts history and you're just kind of doing this
or maybe you're under a blanket that you're about to pull over your head.
It's ugly, guys.
Many of you know, Stewards Colts has not been kind to the Colts over the years,
but we will take a look at that and we'll look at the current version of the Pittsburgh
Steelers as well in segment number three as we do our first game preview of the week.
And then squad squips.
People are still talking about the Carly-Earsay Gordon thing.
I really thought this was going to go away and it's still going.
And we'll talk about how tired we are of the fact that that's still going.
Also, obviously, the Lane Johnson retirement stuff.
That was a big news bite today.
and that's drawn some not so fun reaction to.
We'll get into that when the squad squibs to conclude today's show.
But, Zach, let's start, you know, segment number one here with C.J. Allen.
I also wanted to talk about Darius Slaten, too, because I know it raised some eyebrows
that he wasn't on the field last week, considering the mash unit that the Colts put out there at wide receiver.
But let's start with Allen.
So he gets nicked up in the offseason, right?
And I think the Colts kind of said, well, he's just really behind.
And I'm kind of thinking myself, well, it's not like he missed the whole offseason program.
or something like, you know, we've seen guys that that have been behind,
behind, especially young players when they miss a good portion of it.
And, you know, he missed a couple of weeks.
It wasn't anything seemingly serious.
But then, you know, the whole green dot situation didn't go their way.
And then we're not seeing him not only not on the field as a linebacker,
but just not taking snaps in general.
How troublesome is this?
Because I think we all agree to every time we did the draft shows in April,
I remember we all talked about the importance of nailing the first pick and needing
somebody that can come in and maybe not start right away,
but at least give meaningful contributions right away.
And C.J. Allen hasn't done either of those things through four weeks.
Yeah, I mean, they really only had like one rookie be like meaningful contributor on the team so far.
And it's been Seth McGowan, the backup running back, right, is like the only guy who's been a meaningful rookie for them.
So so far the draft class in general really hasn't panned out for them through four games.
But yeah, you know, you guys know me.
I like to try to view things through a rational point of view, like both positive and negative and try to find what the actual answer here is.
And part of me, I don't want to.
honestly defending the coaching staff, but just kind of thinking like the coaching staff here is the
fact that when Akeem Davis-Gather had to take over the green dot, it changed a lot of their
plans at rotating linebacker because I think they had this vision of when Cameron Bynum was
going to be the green dot, we can just keep interchanging these linebackers constantly.
I mean, look how much Bryce Betcher has played subbing in and out for Jalen Carlize at that will
position, right?
Like, it has been a big part of the game plan to start the season, but they can't really
sub the Mike linebacker right now because Akeem-Dakcher.
Davis Gators the Green Die. You can't take him off the field, especially because the communication
has been so much better the last three weeks than what it was in week one. I mean, the last two weeks,
I know the competition hasn't been the toughest, but they've only allowed 15 points per game the last
two weeks. How do you take that guy off the field now when they're having success, right? So it is
harder to get that rotation going. And also on top of this, I think when, and this is kind of lumping
in the Darius-Layton part of this, you could even throw in like a Pena Gushkin, who they claimed,
and other players, right?
Maybe this coaching staff just really views the offseason program as vital towards getting up to speed with what's going on.
Because Slayton, who wasn't here during the offseason program, not playing at all, right?
Keenan Allen only got this jump start because of his long, long relationship with Shane Stuyken, right?
So outside of Keenan Allen, all these other people, if you missed any time in the offseason, if you, like, DJ Gidden's been a healthy scratch,
I'm not saying that he earned anything more than that.
but again, another guy who missed a lot of time this offseason,
Alec Pierce was on snap count limitations earlier.
I know that was part of the injury,
but maybe they just view the offseason program is so insanely vital
that if you miss any time of that,
you're not getting snaps over Laquan Treadwell
because he was there every day.
You know, he was out there every single day or most days.
So I do think there are ways that I can try to contextualize this.
But at the end of the day, if the guy was doing what needed to be done behind the scenes,
and again, with his pedigree of being a top 50 pick,
I mean, Alan, we know how the NFL is.
Teams like to prove their investment, right?
Show that they're worth the investment.
So they would get him out there some way or another, right?
Whether it's special teams, whether it's, you know, on his snaps, moving a team
Davis Gather to Will.
I mean, Davis Gather played Will for most of his career.
You don't think he can slide over in a pinch and do that for 15 snaps a game and
still call the defense.
Like, you would find ways to get him on the field if you felt like you needed to right now.
So I do think there's more to this than just the green dot thing that I explained
earlier on the Colts show.
But I do think that is a part of the conversation here.
But yeah, it's just kind of an ongoing trend with Chris Ballard's draft picks,
especially in the Shane Steichen era, right?
Where, like, these day two and day three picks, outside of what Josh Downs,
like, they are not getting anything out of these picks for the Colts in Shane Steikin's
era.
Like whether it's A.D. Mitchell getting traded away on his rookie contract, whether
there's Ju-Ju Brent's getting cut on his rookie contract, whether it's other
like Jalen to him a low out being a special teamer and in reserve player like C.J. Allen's just
a long list, like in the long list of guys or we've seen the same thing over and over again.
So from everything I've seen with C.J. Allen, everything I saw in the preseason or thing I saw
early in the year, I think he's looked pretty good. Like I don't know what's holding him back
from playing him. But we are where we are. Again, maybe this, the offseason program is so vital.
That's why none of these guys are playing because it's so, unless you played for Louana Room before,
because maybe we'll see Carl Lawson this week because he used to play for Luana Rumo.
But aside from that, if you never played for Anarumo before and you miss any time in the
offseason, good luck getting on the field, I guess.
Yeah, the whole thing is just weird.
I think if you read the T leaves, it really is just, it's mostly about Allen because really
while you're not getting like a ton of contributions from the rookie class,
he's really playing less than any other ones other than George Gumbs.
And that's because they have had a lot of cooks in the kitchen at edge.
But, you know, when he missed two practices to start camp and then like a little over a week, midway through camp, you know, Lou, I think said they saw him as like a month behind or something, which was pretty aggressive because he still played in two preseason games and got the joint practices with the Falcons and everything.
but then, you know, they start by not committing to the green dot thing, which tells you like,
okay, we don't want to overload this kid.
We'll just give him something to master, and then we'll keep working on that.
So they took the green dot off the plate.
And then here they say he's like a month behind after training camp.
And really there was no point where he was like really dominating the reps with the first team.
he'd been getting first team reps during the summer,
but it was mostly like second team stuff.
So they did, to Zach, to your credit,
kind of get themselves in a bind with missing on the cam,
bind them thing because they really had to commit to Akeem Davis Gather at that point.
But I'm with you on that one.
I don't know why they can't just kick him over to Will
and let C.J. Allen get in some snaps at Mike,
because Louina Rumo said on Tuesday,
they're pretty much pigeonholing him.
into Mike because he was asked like could see J. Allen go in and play Will and they're like no we pretty
much see him as a Mike but as as you and I have studied throughout the offseason since they signed
davis Gather will was really always his more natural fit and it's not like he can't call the defense
from the will position like the defensive tackle could do it if they wanted to it the position doesn't
there's no rules to it so they they're I think they're really trying to
shrink the subject matter of what they want C.J. Allen to master, which makes me think like he's just
not mentally there where they want him to be. You know, if you go through all these things that,
and they're never going to throw guys under the bus, but it's very similar to what they did
to Jalen Toow him a low out last year. And that was the reason. Just I'd been told, you know,
their lose defense is really complex. And it's, it's really hard for rookies to get out there and
play right away. And it's like, okay, they, they just don't, he's just not.
ready because like physically he has not been injured for a long time so it's got to be it's got to be
mental at this point they're just not going to come outright and say it yeah and i will just add to like
to the rookie credit like to the rookie point like a j halsey's played a lot as a rookie and bryce
played a lot as a rookie as well but i guess to the more of the the the anti-roookie point they've
both been two of the worst defenders on the colts this year so so maybe maybe they have maybe they just don't
want Alan to be going through that as well because they think Davis Gather's played well.
I mean, Davis Gather hasn't played great, but he's been their best linebacker this year.
He's gotten better as these few weeks have gone on.
Yeah, the last two weeks, I think he's played really good football.
So, I mean, I don't know.
Again, I throw it to Alan here.
It's kind of just a weird situation.
This whole thing smells like stink.
It does.
Because let me see.
Would we hear?
Well, somebody else's,
the green dot. So Allen only plays the green dot so he can't come in. B.S. He can't play will?
You know, how many offensive guards do we have that can also play tackle? How many receivers do
we have that can go into the slot that are used to being out wide? You know, it's basic fundamental
knowledge in football, especially at linebacker, C-ball, get ball. You know,
So to me, it just feels like, because I have no inside knowledge, it just feels like, you know, punishment, some sort of punishment, that they're mad at them for some reason.
And I don't know why.
And the last thing I'll say is you don't need a green dot to play on special teams.
And, I mean, that's where C.J. Allen should be shining right now on, uh,
the punt team on the kickoff team so he can go get some action in,
take out his aggression because he's not on the field by tackling somebody.
At this point,
I'm sure he'd hit somebody and jar the ball loose because he's mad that he's not on the field.
But what I will say in regards to him not being on the field is Carly is letting the coaches
and the GM run the organization.
and I'll say I know this because look I remember being on the sideline and a trainer had to come over to me and say, Alan, going to huddle, going to game, go get in the huddle.
Coach didn't tell me, which meant that the call came from upstairs, say, get his ass in there.
And I did go in and score.
That's a flex, huh?
Yeah.
That's why he set up that whole story.
there.
He was like a lot of rock.
Yeah, but Carly is letting them run the show, but something just does not smell right about this
situation.
And especially you talk about second rounders, first and second rounders, high draft picks
get a lot longer leash when it comes to making mistakes.
Because they're paying you so much money.
They want you to get out there.
and see what you can do, make your mistakes.
So in the long run, you don't make those mistakes
because you've learned on the job.
He's not even getting the opportunity to learn on the job.
So it just does not smell right to me.
And I'm trying to call it like I see it.
I think that's my big problem is not like,
this is a second round pick, man.
This was your first pick in the draft.
You have to find something for him to do.
Yeah.
And one thing I want to add too is like,
I don't even know if I can buy the like oh he's not processing things quick enough for us.
Like he was a three-year starter starting at 18 years old at Georgia.
They run an NFL defense.
He was calling the defense of Georgia the last two years.
Like, is he just, are you guys having your whole playbook in French or something?
And he just doesn't know the language.
Like what is going on here?
How does a guy who, like I know that sometimes the transition from college to pros,
different. But you're telling me that
a guy who started three years at Georgia,
at linebacker who was calling the defense there at
19 years old, like,
that he just all of a sudden just forgets
football terminology. Like, come on.
Georgia's defense is adopted by half
the NFL. Like, they've been run the same thing.
It's all Sabin person. It's all Sabin stuff,
and that's what everybody runs. So like,
I don't, I just, I don't know. I'm
with you out. Like, something stinks and something's weird about it.
It is what it is. I mean,
we'll see if things change, I guess, going forward.
Yeah, and part of me doesn't care.
because I don't care if it's on Allen.
I don't care if it's on the coaching staff,
if they would have gone to the scouting combine,
they do media availability there and said,
well, you know what,
we don't have a first round pick this year,
but, you know, we're thinking that the second round pick
is just going to kind of come in and sit for a while
in a win now and year where the urgency is as high as it's ever been.
You can imagine what the reaction would have been, right?
And that's where we are through four weeks.
So it's almost like, I don't even really care whose fault it is or whatever else.
It just can't happen.
I know that.
When we come back,
is there a shortcoming organizationally here?
Is there a disconnect?
Are there both of those things going on when it comes to not only Alan,
but just I think there's something to the philosophy of how the Colts approach this offseason in general.
And I know Jake and Zach kind of touched on this in an earlier episode of Locked on Colts,
but we'll bring back up that conversation again and have a larger discussion with the group.
When we return next on the Colts Squad Show, this portion of the Colts Squad Show brought to you by prize picks.

That's where Odu comes in.
Odo is an all-in-one business management software that brings in every part of your

The best organizations know that success isn't just about talent.
It's about having everyone working towards the same goal.
And that's true in sports, just like it is in business.
We know what it's like when it's the opposite, right, when organizations aren't aligned.
In fact, I think we're about to talk about one on tonight's show.
You may be familiar with them that's in that very spot.
And it's obviously frustrating.
And it feels like the team is not built for success when a clear direction is not chosen on decisions.
You need everyone moving in lockstep from the front office to the coaching staff and the players.
Great organizations win because operations matter.

Now, I'm not trying to turn everything into a crisis point.
The Colts are two and two, and they're on a two-game winning streak.
As Jake said, they are going streaking into Pittsburgh.
Everything's still in front of them, right, when it comes to this season.
But it just feels like there have been some red flags about this offseason
and kind of bleeding into the season.
know, Zach, you and Jake kind of talked about it on the show the other day where I think we were all on board with them, let's say, moving on from Zaire Franklin, moving on from Michael Pittman, Jr., right? And moving on from Kenny Moore and making some changes at the top of this roster, at least the top of this roster when it comes to some of the locker room leaders. But at the end of the day, you know, Quitty Pay and guys like that, you have to replace those guys. And when you come back at linebacker and you're going to make this selection of some.
C.J. Allen, I think we all were thinking, okay, you threw out the locker, the linebacker room,
great. We're fine with that. But if you throw that out, then you have to bring in bodies to
replace to grow and develop and learn and all of that. And I know he wasn't the fourth pick in the draft,
but, you know, you're talking about a top 50 pick in C.J. Allen. And the fact that he can't see the field,
to me, it's just troubling of seemingly an organization that, you know, it feels like sometimes they make
plans for guys and then they end up ripping up the plan almost immediately and then having to
pivot. And I don't know if that's a disconnect thing. I don't know if that's, okay, well, the decorinator
and the GM aren't agreeing or the head coach and the GM aren't agreeing on players. But to me,
it really doesn't matter. It just appears to be kind of a bad look and it seems to be a roster
that's constantly in turmoil because of these decisions that happen and then there's no solution.
They pick a solution and then that ends up somehow not being the solution, if that makes sense.
Yeah, it's actually funny.
I'm going to kind of take this in a different direction where I don't really know if that's too much the issue.
I just think when the Colts hired Luanna Rumo, it was very much a Shane Stuyken hire.
It was not a Chris Ballard hire at all, right?
Because you can always tell with the NFL, a lot of things, like if you look at someone's history,
you can typically tell what's going to come from there.
And with Chris Ballard and Ed Dodd's history as well, they only almost exclusively worked with Tampa 2.
in Seattle cover three type of defensive
coordinators, right? Hence the Matt
Eberfluse and the Gus Bradley hires,
very crisp out and Ed Dodds hires.
And that's the only type of stuff they've ever known, right?
Is that type of defense, those type of guys
as defensive coordinators?
So the Anarumo hire was like way out of left field
for me in terms of like, this is a multiple defense.
This is not we're going to sit in cover two,
we're going to sit in cover three and play fast downhill type
defense. It's a very, very different defense that is so multiple and you just need like very
different body types across the defense. And I think something we've seen with the drafting and
free agent acquisition since Lou Anurma was hired is they have no clue what this defense needs
and how to acquire certain talent or certain people. So the only thing they feel good about is like,
well, this guy played for Aniruma before. So clearly he fit into the system before. So let's bring this guy
back. Hence all these
guys that they've brought in that used
to play for Luana Rumo.
But like a lot of the other acquisitions
and signings and draft
picks have been extremely
weird fits for this defense.
I mean, I mean, I
hate to always go after this guy, but like Jerry Taylor
doesn't fit this defense in any way.
Like he does, like there's no
thing that he fits this defense in doing.
He's not a, like they are
very much a reacting
defensive front instead of an attacking
defensive front, but Tilleri can't hold at the point of attack, so he's not a reacting type
of defender.
Michael Clemens, how does he fit into a multiple defense?
He can't drop into coverage.
He's not a good rusher from the interior.
Like, you want him to stand up at the edge of the line when they go on base defense and
play Y-9 with his body type?
What is that?
Like, Arden-key kind of fits, I guess, but he doesn't ever really drop into coverage either.
Like, and I think one of the biggest disconnects has been Leot-Latu, right?
where Chris Ballard drafts this guy to be a star edge pass rusher that you can isolate and win one-on-on-on-one.
But Lou Aniromo, and again, in my opinion, he's playing him correctly.
But Luana Rumo sees him as a strong side defense vend that can push the pocket,
do some of the drop in coverage things, and be a good run defender because he's a limited player.
That's an extreme disconnect, though.
GM took this guy 15th overall to be a superstar, and the defense of corner views him as a high-level role player.
And that's kind of what he's been for Anorumo.
So it's so much of this disconnect where, like, I don't think they're ever on the same page in terms of, like, what the defense needs.
I mean, and they went into this season with, again, their starting edge room was Latu and Arden Key and Michael Clemens, where their top edge rushers, right?
Their linebackers were King Davis Gather and Jalen Carlyson, a bunch of rookies.
This was a must-win season, and those are the guys you're throwing out there.
They don't even have the right body types, let alone the skill to really help you be this top defense.
So I do think the disconnect is specifically like noticeable on GM to defensive staff.
And I'm not saying which side's right here because for all I know, they could both suck, right?
They could both just be terrible at what they do.
But there has been this clear disconnect in what is needed and how to acquire certain things.
And it does seem like it's like, oh, when in doubt, let's just get somebody that Anuromo coach before because we know that that guy fits the system because we can't evaluate any other skill set to get into this system.
because these guys are not really good fits.
I even think Grover Stewart to a degree is a weird fit for the system, right?
Because he's a forward shooting, aggressive gap shooting player,
and they have him being more passive at the line.
So it is a really weird fit,
and I don't think they did enough to overhaul the defense.
And when they did overhaul the defense,
they kept bringing in guys who still didn't really fit the system.
So I don't know.
I just think that that pairing with Anurumo and Stuyken made sense,
but Anuromo and Ballard and Dodds has been a really, really weird pairing so far.
Yeah, I think it's most apparent on defense, obviously, because we've seen Louis and Romo have to go in and completely change the cornerback room.
And God knows how much work they did on the safeties this offseason.
And the defensive linemen, they pick up, whether it's a free agent or draft pick, just can't, they don't hit.
But I just think going to your point of the draft picks and everything, Derek, I think everybody who,
watches the Colts and ownership and everyone was on board with knowing this had to be like
an urgent offseason where basically everything you did had to, you know, like that's great
if it helps you for the future, but everything you do needs to ensure that you win right now.
It seems like everybody, but the front office was on board with that because I feel like
they clearly don't feel a sense of urgency with C.J. Allen or they would have a role for him.
you know, taking Jalen Farmer as your third draft pick and a guy that's only playing,
like, on the field goal block team, you go to last year, Jalen, Tua Moloow, like, they were
fine with him only playing 200 snaps.
The season before that, your second round pick was A.D. Mitchell, a guy who's not even on
the team anymore, but who played like 10 snaps a game.
There's just, you know, I think it was Chris Ballard himself.
pointed out a year or two ago before the draft, there always is this natural internal struggle
between coaches and the front office.
Coaches want when now, guys they can work with right now, and the front office is more
focused on bigger picture.
So with the Colts when it comes to player acquisition, I don't, it can, to me, only
be one of two things, either negligence, which I don't think it is.
or hubris and the players you're bringing in,
that they're going to be more than what they are.
And I think it's more of that.
Because we can all see,
we can call things out as they happen and say that,
hey,
this isn't going to be enough.
And then every year we wind up being right.
And I don't,
that shouldn't be the case.
You know,
sometimes like fans and media and all that,
like we're not always supposed to be right when it comes to the team we cover,
but we kind of are.
There's always an important position group that gets,
neglected or there's there's one that's like a non-essential position that gets way too much attention
paid to it and it's just like the chickens are coming home to roost again this year like this is
this is this was this is a season where like there's jobs on the line and here they are neglecting the
edge group and and now two guys who wound up being important for some reason and michael
clemens and arden key aren't even healthy and able to play so now it's just
just a disaster. Like guys, they signed Carl Lawson today. That's someone we wanted the Colts to
pick up like five years ago. And that's the thing. It's like, did Lou and Arummo not have any
players on his Cincinnati defense that were good two, three years ago? All of them come from
2020 because that's all the players that they're acquiring. It's, it's really insane. But yeah,
I don't think there's any question that there's some level of disconnect here.
Again, I think a lot of this is Ballard has no clue what type of player needs to come into Lou and a row system.
So he just goes back to, well, this guy used to play for you.
So clearly he like fits your system, right?
Lou's been in the league a while.
Yeah.
But guys, this is, am I right in saying, this is what bad organizations do, though, right?
Like, smart good organizations don't do this.
And right, Alan, I mean, you saw what smart organizations do.
you certainly saw what bad organizations do during your playing career.
I mean, that that's really the most deflating thing of all.
Like what I've always tried to default to is that at least the process for the most part for the cults is pretty good.
And they have people in charge that know what they're doing.
And they're going to pick the right, even if they make the wrong decisions,
they're going to eventually pick the right direction.
But it just feels like lately this team doesn't know up from down because they've got all these guys that are not connecting on really these really simple levels about, you know,
players that they're drafting and what their roles are going to be.
It's very troubling to me.
Derek, you teed me up perfectly because I was just going to go there and say,
you see the teams in the NFL that win consistently, all are good organizations.
They're good starting at the top.
And you know what rolls downhill.
But it trickles downhill.
Now, having said that I look at the Colts organization with favor.
I see players.
that, you know, they finally let go,
but other organizations would have let go of Zaire Franklin two years ago,
would have let go of Michael Pittman two years ago,
or Quitty Pay would have let them go two years ago.
But I think the Colts, they have some patience with players.
And, you know, I've just seen guys just get cut right away
in some organizations.
And you really don't hear of squabbles,
internal squabbles between GM coaches.
My perception is, you know,
Ballard may pick a guy, but he's going to let the coaches coach.
He's not going to tell the coaches how certain guys should be used.
He's going to let the coaches determine that.
That's just my perception.
And, you know, with Carly, I think she's letting
the coaches do their job as she continues to learn, which we'll talk about in the last segment.
But I don't see this, the cult's organization is this disjointed group of people that don't know what they're doing.
But this one particular situation with C.J. Allen is just so irregular for an organization that to me seems pretty sound.
So there's got to be more to it.
Well, something that's not been a regular is the Colts struggling in Pittsburgh.
How ugly has it been?
I'll bring up some of the all-time numbers.
It's not pretty, not safe for work.
I guess it's 9.30.
So if you're live streaming, you don't have to worry about that when we come back here on the squad show next.

Rolling right along here, midweek edition Colts Squad Show, getting you set for Colts and Steelers,
fully squatted up today with Alan Pinkett, Zach Hicks, Jake Arthur.
I'm Derek Schultz.
So Colts in Pittsburgh, they have lost 9 of 11 to the Steelers.
and that actually dates all the way back to the post-Paeton Manning era.
Now, technically, the first loss of that 11 was the 2011 team,
but that was not with Peyton Manning as a starter.
In fact, I think that might have been Curtis Painter's first start
after the Kerry Collins' short-lived experience.
It's been even worse for them in Pittsburgh, though.
They haven't won there since 2008,
and that is the only time that the Indianapolis Colts have won in Pittsburgh.
They are one and 13 all time in Pittsburgh.
The series overall, 24 games, five wins, 19 losses.
That has not been pretty.
But, Zach, let's start with the current Steelers.
Not that the Colts have lit the world on fire or anything, right?
But these Steelers have been very underwhelming through the first four weeks and I think
is a team that can get got, as they say.
That said, I mean, we kind of alluded to this on Sunday show when we,
when we first sort of turned to the page.
Just a really critical game for both of these teams.
But I would argue even more so for the Colts,
just with those losses to Houston's 0 and 4, right?
But you never know.
They could fight their way back into the wildcard mix.
Baltimore, Kansas City.
You know, it's tough.
When you're talking about the wildcard teams,
I think it is going to be a little bit of a crowded room.
And I expect Pittsburgh to be in there.
And I'm thinking that the Colts are going to be in there, too.
So you don't want to drop a game to appear.
Yeah, no, I think this is their first, like,
It's like the first true test for this Colts team where it's like, again, the first two games,
they lose two likely playoff teams that are almost certainly going to be in the playoffs.
Then they beat two teams that are almost certainly not going to be in the playoffs, right?
Like, Houston, even though they come out of the O'N3 hole before, I don't think they're coming out of O'N4 to make the playoffs this year.
Commanders probably not making the playoffs this year.
So what kind of team are you?
Are you a team that only beats bad teams and loses to every good team you play?
Or can you actually show up for a game where, I don't know, I don't know if Pittsburgh's making the playoffs this year.
they usually have some kind of voodoo magic that gets them into the playoffs every year,
despite having every metric say they're a bad team.
But, you know, they're going to always be in the conversation, right, because they have that defense.
So what kind of team are they, especially when, like, again, the schedule kind of stack this game against them,
going on the road after coming back from London when the Pittsburgh Steelers had 10 days to rest for this game, right?
It's a really weird schedule game.
I know the Colts elected not to take the buy, but it doesn't mean you have to still schedule them on a road.
game against a team coming off a Thursday night game, right? Like, it still doesn't have to be like
this. So I want to see what kind of team shows up for the Colts. Like, do they actually show up, like,
committed and desiring to play this game, or do they lay an egg against another team that they
might be competing with for a playoff spot? So it's going to be a type of game where you really
see the character of this team against the Steelers. But, you know, Derek, I don't think the Steelers team
is that great. Their offense is very inefficient when they throw the football. I think their
quarterback play is some of the worst in football. Now, the Colts quarterback play has been pretty bad, too.
So, I mean, it's kind of the battle of the bads in that regard. Both teams actually run the ball
fairly well, too. So we'll see which team, like, commits more to the run early and often in this game.
I think the biggest concern for me going into this game, though, is the Steelers defense takes
the ball away at a very high level. Even though they are dealing with a lot of injuries in their
secondary right now, Jamal Dean is out, and they have, you know, a couple of young corners that
are going to be in this game, they still take the football away.
at a really high rate, where what's the one thing that's really held this Colts team back all
year is their turnover differential. They've been really, really bad in the turnover differential,
and that's one of the margins that this Colts team has been losing points and potentially,
you know, losing games on. So will the Colts continue their awful turnover ways in Pittsburgh?
That will probably be the thing that decides of this game. So Daniel Jones, please just know
where the ball is supposed to go. Don't hold it out with one hand and fumble. And the Coles
might have a shot at winning this one.
But it's going to be a tough one.
You know, I don't like to look at past history,
unless it's at Jacksonville because at Jacksonville truly is a curse.
That's, I don't believe in curses outside of that one.
That's the one curse in this world I actually fully believe in.
But, you know, I don't really believe in it too much with the Steelers
because they just don't play them as often.
But, again, like, every time they go to Pittsburgh, it has been kind of a mess.
So what kind of team are they this year?
They're going to actually show up and compete in this game,
or are they going to lay down because, oh, it's a scheduled loss?
you know, it's a tough road trip for us.
Like, they do need to show up for this game.
Or again, we're going to be facing the same questions we always have with this staff and with this team going forward.
It is gut check time.
Like, I think, you know, looking at last year's matchup, they ultimately lost by one score while turning the ball over, what, five times.
And I think every one of Pittsburgh's points was off of turnovers.
So the Colts essentially gift wrapped that game and put it a nice.
nice bow on it for them. So I think some big factors in this. Pressure really bothered Jones in that last
one leading to the majority of those turnovers. It's really the first game where we saw the peripheral
pass pass protection like running backs and everything really fail. So I think if they can handle
pressure appropriately, they'll be like if if they do it to the level they have the last
couple weeks, they'll be fine.
I mean, TJ Y is T.J. Watt, but he's not necessarily Will Anderson, if that makes
sense.
And then just Jones taking care of, like, that's got to be at the forefront, which there's
some good and some bad with that because you want a guy to be super cognizant of the fact
that he just keeps turning the ball over, but you don't want it to neuter him, basically.
You still want him to take chances, especially if they're able to get some sort of field
stretcher out there, whether Darius Slayton is finally able to play, whether they broaden
Dionne Burke's role or, you know, Kwez Watkins is able to play.
Like they need somebody out there this week that can stretch the field.
And obviously, if you're going to take chances down field, you got guys like Jalen Ramsey back
there, you can turn the ball over.
And shoot, they did it short.
They did it deep last year.
I mean, remember Peyton Wilson got that intercept.
right over the middle of the field, just a little dink right over the line of scrimmage.
You got that.
So I think this is just about taking care of the football.
Really, I do.
I thought Pittsburgh did a nice job against Jonathan Taylor last year.
That's obviously what every defense wants to do is take away Taylor and make Jones beat you.
Even if they take Taylor away, I would just love to not, I would love to see Daniel not just sink
new a shell of himself, you know?
So, Derek, you said that the Colts having won in Pittsburgh since 2008.
That means that most of the guys on this team had hit puberty since the Colts have won
in Pittsburgh.
But I will tell you this, that is great motivation for this team.
You know, this is your opportunity to rewrite history.
This is your chance to be the team that was different than all those other slugs in the past.
So if I'm a player in that locker room, I like the fact that there's a losing record going in there because I'm part of a group that's going to change everything.
Just like last year, they won their opening game, which they hadn't done in what, 10 years?
So, you know, there's that any given Sunday thing, you know, but to me it is great motivation to be able to go into Pittsburgh and make a difference.
And I think the name of the game is pressure by our defense.
This Steelers team has given up 13 sacks.
And, you know, 13 sacks sounds like a big number.
Maybe not so much.
But five sacks by Cleveland sounds like a big ass number.
If Cleveland can get on Jones' ass, then the Colts defensive line and all those who
are associated with getting after the quarterback should be looking their chops,
saying, oh, they got a crack.
And you know what Pittsburgh's been doing for 10 days, trying to sure up blitz protection.
Bliss protection is always the longest period in practice.
Teams spend more time on bliss protection because they can't let their quarterback get hit so many times
because they're paying them too much damn money.
So I'm sure that the focus has been, look, we can't have.
have somebody coming back side, front side up to middle,
hitting our quarterback.
I'm even guessing that Pittsburgh may do a lot of max protect,
just so Aaron Rogers can stay upright.
But when you see five sacks by Cleveland,
oh, you got to be thinking, oh, we got a shot right here to do some damage.
So I don't know what will happen,
but if I was in that locker room, I would so be looking forward to this game because it's an opportunity to do something different.
I want to real quick, I want to give a little bit of love to Cleveland's D-line though.
I know Allen is not giving them the love, but Jared Verse and Mali Collins are really good players.
So they, and Mason Graham, too, who got banged up in that game.
But they have some dudes on that defensive line.
Now, again, five sacks is a lot to give up.
But they do it.
Mallee Collins, I think is one of the most underrated players in the league right now at
defensive tackle. I know we don't have a lot of old heads in the YouTube room, but weirdly,
the 2008 win that you mentioned there, Alan, just kind of a parting thought. That's one of my
favorite Colts wins ever. I don't know if anybody else cares about that game. They were in Pittsburgh.
Dominic Rhodes ran in a long pass. I want to say it was like a 17, 18-18-yard pass from
Peyton Manning in the final minutes. They were behind double digits in that game. That was the year that
Manning had the weird, we found out what a bursa sack was because Manning had a weird
versus sack thing on his knee and they started two and three and you would have thought
everyone's house was burning down because the Colts were starting 7-0, 8-0, 9 and 0, 13-0, 14,
no, no, 15-0-0, like every single year during that span and they started two and three.
I think there were three and four at one point.
And then they won every game left.
They won nine straight games until the Cyphreys Darren Sproul's game in San Diego, Duke that season.
So no one remembers that season because the Colts went to San Diego and lost to an eight-and-eight Chargers team.
But man, that win in Pittsburgh was fun.
And Pittsburgh went on to win the Super Bowl.
And that was a really, really fun Colts win.
I remember watching it at a bar and indie with some college friends.
The alcohol had nothing to do with that.
But it was a great time overall and a great memory that specific game.
But a long time coming 18 years ago.
Yeah, the Colts have had some really tough memorable losses to the Steelers.
uh in since even just since the 2000s i mean the shoe lace tackle is obviously the most
recognized of course right like that that cost payment and wins another super bullet with the
colts if that doesn't happen um but there's even other was like didn't rothsburger throw
for like 560 in a game against the or like almost 2014 somewhere around there yeah like there's
some crazy ones in there for sure um so yeah the steelers again i don't think it's as cursed as the
Jacksonville thing because like that one is like nope because like the Steelers been good for the last like 30 years right they've always been a degree of good in Jacksonville they could win one game in a season that one game they're winning is at is the Colts at Jacksonville right so that one's more cursed but yeah the Steelers one certainly has some credence to it as well can people outside of Indiana let the Carly Ursaid Gordon on the sidelines thing go apparently not we're getting into that when the squad show returns with squad squibs for a final time
I'm next.

to get started.
And we're back for a final time,
locked on Colts Squad Show.
We will be with you right after Colts and Steelers concludes coming up on Sunday.
So probably in the 430 range,
something like that to be your home as we always are for postgame reaction,
live post game reaction to every Colts game.
I'm pretty sure we're always the first ones to do it, I think,
at least in the internet sphere.
I know some of the TV people and things like that,
they throw together their own post game shows.
but you need to come here and lock it on with locked on Colts and us to react to each and every game this season.
So the Carly Ursingorning thing is just I get it, I guess, a little bit because the Colts had sort of been in anonymity so far this season.
I guess they did play a Sunday night game against Kansas City, but like they were the standalone morning London game.
So you're kind of reintroducing some people, the audience.
And so I understand that the national people are always kind of looking for storylines when it comes to that.
And Colts Commanders is not very sexy.
So that kind of, I think lent it to it getting brought up.
But the fact that there are still like all these videos, you know, Jake, I actually wanted you to speak to this a little bit because you're inside.
You're our boots on the ground when it comes to this.
This has not been a secret in the organization for a long time.
Just to repeat ourselves on this show, we've talked about this over.
Carly or say Gordon has been on the sidelines for many years.
This is not a new thing.
It's not a unique thing.
It's fairly commonplace here,
but everybody else just freaks the heck out about it.
And I just wonder if it's,
if it's ever going to end,
is it because the Colts aren't off to a great start
and they think that she's meddling in it?
It's because she's female.
Like, I just, I don't understand why it just keeps happening over and over again.
And it's almost like it's being approached,
like it's a fresh storyline.
And I'm like, guys, we've been over this over and over again.
What's been your reaction to just kind of the whole thing?
I hate it.
Yeah, like it gets recycled like every couple months.
It seems like it's like people forgot about it.
And now they see it again.
Like I kind of blame, you know, the camera operators for continually going to it.
And then the commentators for saying something.
And then the national people pick it up again.
And it's like it never ends.
And I just like it will be one thing if if she has.
this longstanding reputation for being like a meddling owner or anything, but we don't even
really know what she's like as an owner yet. But we do know she's been doing this for a very
long time. And it fits in very well to what her history and the organization has been.
She has worked in every department of the Colts franchise, even ticketing and marketing.
She wants to know how this thing works. And now she owns it. Like she is the face of whatever
everyone has to answer to. So I think it's pretty wise for her to be able to answer how every single
thing works. She sits in on a lot of meetings as well. It's not meddling. She's not in there
judging and critiquing play calls and challenging them and telling them to do things differently.
She wants to, number one, she holds Shane in very high regard and blue as well. They want to know
why something is being called in the situation that it is and why it works and why it doesn't.
It's not even necessarily for input or to overstep bounds or anything.
It's literally just to, like, she has a unique position to be able to, like, learn how coaches think,
which is the whole point of it all.
But, you know, I do think part of it, like, is because she's female, Derek, as you mentioned,
Like women, it's no secret, are not taken nearly seriously enough.
So you see a female owner that's down there on the sidelines.
They think she's being overbearing and overstepping when it's just really not the case.
We've asked numerous times on the record, off the record, people in the organization,
how they feel about it and no one has a problem with it.
She's got very great relationships with people inside that whole organization.
Um, it's, it's just, it's a non-issue.
It really is.
And I think maybe people will start to cut her some slack as time goes on.
And we see her handprints more on things like, if this season doesn't go well,
everyone wants to see her do the correct thing and,
and move on from Chris Ballard and or Shane Steichen.
And if people start to take her decision making seriously and everything,
they'll, they'll probably make it less of a story.
like it is. It's not a real story anymore, but people keep bringing it up.
But if she gets a reputation for being meddling or just doing all this stuff,
they'll keep coming back to this. And that's just really how it is, unfortunately.
I'm not going to say too much on this because, I mean, gosh, we've had to rehash this conversation
so many times because it keeps coming up and it's just frustrating at this point for everyone
involved. But one thing I will say, Jake, is no, it's never going to go away. They could win
every single game for the rest of time. And there's still going to be some bad faith actors who are
going to still make a story out of this because of, you know, things that you mentioned in there.
So no, it's never going to go away. It's just the nature of the world we live in at the moment.
And people are more used to seeing owners that are sex pests instead of seeing owners who
actually care about the product on the field and actually care about the process. You know,
so we're more okay with certain owners getting arrested in Ohio for going to trailer parks because
that's a normal thing that we see all the time. But a woman on the sidelines taking notes and listening
into the process of things, that's insane to everybody. And that has to be talked about and meme to death.
And it's absurd. I'm ready to move on from it. I think she's a great football mind. She knows more
about this sport than any of us even. Like, and she's, she knows what she's doing. So I like someone
who cares about the process as someone who also cares about the process of things. So keep doing it. I
she continues doing it and I hope at least a better result for the Colts going forward.
Well, I find her process refreshing.
And you got to understand maybe she hasn't played it down to football, but she brings a different perspective.
And I think that, you know, you can't ignore the fact that it's her team.
Right.
She owns the team.
How do you plan, if you were the owner, how would,
would you manage your team? Would you be up in the private suite just part in? Or would you want to know
all the intricacies of this thing that you own? You know, so I kind of like it because, you know,
it's not like someone that's looking or looming over you or micromanaging. She makes it clear
that she's down there trying to learn.
She wants to learn the intricacies of the game
to better understand why a certain play was called.
I don't think a lot of owners even care what's called.
So instead of badgering her,
we should be applauding her
because she is doing the things necessary
to help her team,
the team that she owns,
wins. So it's a refreshing look to me. And I think a lot of owners ought to take note that maybe
they should pay more attention to their teams, especially those that are perennial losers.
So I have no problem with it. If it makes more noise, it makes more noise because we always
tend to go to those things that are newsworthy, you know, the old saying, if it bleeds, it leads,
type of thing.
So it's not customary,
number one, to see a female owner.
Number two, see the owner on the sidelines,
taking notes.
But to me, I like seeing it.
I like knowing that the owner cares about all the aspects
of her business that she would be down there
trying to learn what's going on.
And I still go back.
back to, I think the greatest impression she made on me was, I guess, the video that showed
her talking to, what's the running back's name, number 20, Hawthorne? When she got on and said,
are you ready to prove everybody effing wrong? And I think that she just injected so much
energy and confidence into him
that it's no mistake that we're seeing him play
and do as well as he did.
And that's the kind of thing she can do for this entire team.
So don't mean to sound like a cheerleader,
you know, but to me,
her being on the sidelines is,
I like seeing it and wish more owners would do it.
I actually just saw something today
about someone was interviewing John Gruden
and he was talking about the impact Al Davis had on him.
And like Al Davis, like Al Davis had a reputation that most of us saw.
But like how he made him better as a coach by forcing him as an offensive-minded coach to focus on things throughout the entire team and throughout the opponents, both sides of the ball.
Gruden was like, Al Davis was the only owner I know that could come in and reg.
recall how we conducted pump formations and things like this and that. And I think you're,
you're well better off as anyone in the organization. I have an owner come in who is able to
speak the same language as you rather than just being up in the luxury suite, schmoozing potential,
you know, doing all of the advertisers and enrich people stuff. Yeah. Like, I, I,
I just think whatever decisions, big decisions she makes from here on now,
we at least don't want to be able to say, well, she doesn't know what she's doing.
She will at least know what she's doing, whether we agree with it or not.
Yeah, and it would be problematic if she was meddling,
but nothing indicates that she is meddling.
In fact, here in Indianapolis, we know what meddling or say family members look like.
We're not too far removed from when that happened.
And that season was a total trash fire.
So as long as, you know, the meddling doesn't happen.
It's her team.
She can do what she wants.
I wish people would shut the heck up about it.
The process is more important than just the results.
And she wants to hear exactly what's going on on game day.
So when they go back and review it later in the week, she has more of a basic understanding of the process there.
So yeah, it's great.
It's awesome.
Keep it going.
Every owner should do this.
Everyone should care.
If she's sipping sparkling water in the owner's box.
then it'd be look at the absentee owner,
you know, look at the NEPO baby, right?
That's running the team. So like,
you can't win, right? She's on the sidelines.
People are mad about it. She's up in the box.
People would be mad about that.
It's just, I feel for her.
I feel for the sisters. I do.
It's a crappy situation to be in.
Yeah, we just embrace it.
She is trying.
So let her try and just get out of the way.
With that, we'll get out of the way ourselves.
