Starting point is 00:00:00 by golly the colts have done it again they have stomped out the tennessee titans that's a sweep in three straight years you guys and wouldn't you know it daniel jones and jonathan taylor were absolutely excellent in the performance and led the way let's get to it you are locked on colts your daily indianapolis colts podcast of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, thanks for tuning in, making us your first listen of the day. This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts, part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. Starting point is 00:00:49 Download on the GameTime app, create an account and use code Locked-on NFL for 20 bucks off of your first purchase. What is up, beautiful people? this is Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports. I'm your credential boots on the ground, as Zach likes to say, for the site bringing you guys all the news and notes and all the happenings from the Colts facility, from the stadium, the locker room, what have you. And of course, we are on the heels of another Colts win.
Starting point is 00:01:15 They win 38 to 14 over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Again, you had another beat down after they beat them 41 to 20 back in week three. And another example of, okay, for those of you saying that the Colts haven't faced anyone, sure, they've got some easier matchups on their schedule, but they're killing these opponents. And this is just yet another example of that. So the Colts are making quick work and not necessarily playing with their food, so to speak, in these games. They're taking care of business, and they're doing what you would hope to see good teams do. So we're going to start up top with Daniel Jones, as usual here. So this guy, you know, the numbers indicate a really strong performance,
Starting point is 00:02:02 and I thought it was overall. But there was like a little stretch there in the first half where I was a little worried if he might be kind of tuning into one of his lesser games this season. You know, he took a few hard hits. I think he had three sacks. There was one of them where he kind of hit his head a little hard on the turf. I never came out of the game or anything, but then once the second half came around, he was just as good as ever and kind of quelled all issues. Overall, 21 of 29, which is yet another game over 70% completions, 272 yards, yet another game over 250 yards,
Starting point is 00:02:42 yards per attempt of 9.4, which is crazy at the rate he's doing this, three touchdowns, 136 quarterback rating. No turnovers. The guy has only turned the ball over in two games this year. He's got, I think, three picks. Like, that's it. The guy is just not turning the ball over. And that's outstanding, considering what we all knew of him in New York, which was just this blatantly unsexy quarterback who was kind of prone to turning the ball over,
Starting point is 00:03:14 especially fumbling. And those, that's just not been issues for him this year. I thought this game was another kind of microcosm of what he's done all season, spreading the ball around, finding the open man. You know, several guys had big performances in the passing game. But, you know, coming up, Clutch on, you know, they converted a fourth down. Third down wasn't their greatest day, but he found the plays that were there to be made. He has been entrusted to just rip the ball on third and long.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I think it was 13 late in the game or early in the game when he had that. 50-yard completion to Alec Pierce. It's like that that's just the latest example of it being third and forever. And not only them picking up a chunk play, but being given the green light to kind of go for the jugular. So Daniel's been great, you know, painting all areas of the field, taking the checkdowns, taking the short stuff, but also the intermediate and deep and, you know, outside, inside, like the guy's going for it.
Starting point is 00:04:17 And it looks creative as well, like just, for example, the last little touchdown to Jonathan Taylor. That's technically going to go into Daniel Jones portfolio as a touchdown. That just little pop pass there at the end. But they're just finding different ways to just mix it up. It's not just a classic drop back, throw the ball, let it rip offense. They're just doing so many things to just bring variety to the offense. and just switch it up and make defenses, not only have to guess, but, like, hesitate and take a second,
Starting point is 00:04:54 which if you're behind a second as a defender, you're toast. You know, the guy you're supposed to be guarding is already going to have the upper hand on you, and have a couple steps on you, and it's over. So, yeah, this was another big one from Daniel Jones. And again, it's created a little bit of this course here, not necessarily from us, but Jonathan Taylor, is obviously the one that got a ton of MVP consideration or, you know, chatter after this performance after, yeah, another dominating game that we'll talk about here in a moment.
Starting point is 00:05:25 But Daniel Jones deserves it kind of just as much, I think. I think the Colts have two legitimate MVP candidates. I mean, go back to last year, go, you know, come back to this year, look at it. Like, do you see this offense, this team being able to function the same way whatsoever if it's not Daniel Jones at quarterback or if Jonathan Taylor isn't playing out of his mind. And these guys are just so incredibly invaluable to the operation of what they're doing that it's, I don't know. I think some of the bigger name guys around the league like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen
Starting point is 00:06:01 and these guys, for whatever reason, they're still being propped up as these untouchable options at MVP and like the obvious options at MVP. And those guys should always be in the conversation for what they're doing. but, like, look at the Colts. It's just still more disrespect about a team that keeps winning, keeps killing bad teams, is still the number one seat in the AFC and has the best record in all of football. I mean, give these guys a little bit of respect. Like, if we're talking about value and not just most outstanding player,
Starting point is 00:06:35 then, yeah, the value that Daniel Jones and the value that Jonathan Taylor have been bringing to the Colts as an entire team, not just an offense. I mean, those two guys have so much weight in why the team is as good as they are that if we're talking about value and the most valuable players, of course, they've got to be up there near the top of consideration. But again, Zach and I have complained about that on a recent show, and I'm sure we will probably complain about it again at some point as we get closer to when the NFL honors and all that stuff will come out.
Starting point is 00:07:10 So I'll show up about Daniel Jones now. We will go ahead and talk about Jonathan Taylor and the rest of the Colts offense. In just a moment, again, 38 to 14 beat down. There's a lot to talk about, my friends. This episode is brought to you by Price Fix. You and I make decisions every day, but on Price Fix, being right can actually get you paid. Price Picks operates, and that includes California, Texas, and Georgia. I've been used to price picks for a long time to have been a sponsor on this network forever, it seems. Using during certain game days, like primetime games and all that, and NBA tip-offs even, It keeps every game exciting. They've got this new stack feature.
Starting point is 00:08:15 It's a total game changer. You can now pick more on one singular player, you know, a bevy of their stats. Like Steph Curry, for example, points, threes, and assists all in the same lineup. Didn't used to be able to do that now you can. Plus, if one of your players leads early with an injury, then the injury reboot saves your lineup from a loss. So download the Price Fix app today and use code locked on NFL to get $50 in lineups after you play your first. five dollar lineup. Welcome back, friends and family. We are talking the Colts victory over the Tennessee Titans, pushing them to 7.
Starting point is 00:10:07 and one, and again, defending their home turf of Lucaso Stadium, which was an awesome environment, by the way. You guys, I heard you loud and clear from the press box, and that's not always easy to do. A game against a one-win Titans team, you guys were still fired up, you were ready to support Jonathan Taylor and all the guys. I always get chills when I'm in a stadium or an arena, whatever sporting event it is, and you see someone who's just like so in their bag like Jonathan Taylor. And then you feel the fans giving it right back to him with the MVP chance and everything. And, like, fans, like, we can all be hyperbolic sometimes. And, like, we know a certain guy isn't necessarily of that caliber. But, like, the encouragement fit the moment.
Starting point is 00:10:53 You know what I mean? Like, it felt like a signature MVP moment for Jonathan Taylor, you know, a fourth three touchdown game on the season. For all of you who are there to just kind of make it rain the MVP chance on him, I thought that was really cool. Again, because it's not always fitting, but it was very appropriate in that setting. So let's go ahead and talk about this offense real quick. Another 400-yard game, 420 yards, 38 points. They were 3 of 4 in the red zone.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Now, if you guys checked out WCHR Plus with Dominant Miranda and I after the game, I did say this next area is something that actually leads me kind of encouraged because, again, the Colts were knocking on the door 40 points. They had over 400 yards, but they really weren't great on third down. They were three of nine on third down. That's just 33%. Again, that is not that good at all. They salvage it being one of one on fourth down.
Starting point is 00:11:48 But to have an offensive output like that, when there's an area you clearly could improve in, and we've seen them have some pretty good third down games, so we know they're capable of it. And they're a historically great offense right now. that is always good to see for me, especially going into a game like next week against the Steelers, where the Colts certainly have the advantage against the defense like that. It's very static and doesn't really vary up there looks very much. To see, you know, third down is an area you can improve and sustain drives, make those drives last longer, control the ball longer.
Starting point is 00:12:25 I think that's pretty encouraging. So let's look at Jonathan Taylor. So 153 yards rushing, which, again, I've talked about excellence exhaustion before. Like, that's kind of ho-hum for us to see from him before. But the most gaudy part of that is it was on 12 carries. Now, so he had an 80-yard touchdown, which, of course, adds a ton to it. But even still, that's 11 carries for 73 yards. Like, the guy is out of his mind right now.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Two rushing touchdowns. He had one in the first quarter. had the 80-yarder to open up the third quarter and then had that little pop pass in the fourth quarter to add his third of the game. A couple receptions for 21 yards. Again, three total touchdowns, last one counting as a reception. Again, that is four games this year of three touchdowns, which there's only like five or six guys in NFL history have done that. Every new week, it's like I pour through the statistics and like record book stuff. that gets sent to us every week.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Not only is Jonathan just, like, carving through the Colts franchise record books against God, like, Hall of Famers, like, Lenny Moore, Edron James, Marshall Falk, Eric Dickerson. Like, he's been flirting with NFL history lately. Like, he's joining, like, elite groups of guys, Jim Brown, LaDanian Thomas, and Adrian Peterson. There was one, like, he was the first guy since Jamal Charles, I think, to have a four-game stretch where he has, like 500 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns. So he's just playing unbelievable football right now. And again, we can't take for granted what we're seeing. And I don't think it's, again, I don't think it's overreacting to say that we might be
Starting point is 00:14:15 seeing the best football Colts running back has ever played. Now, I know Marshall Falk went on to like the greatest show on turf with the Rams and everything. Eric Dickerson had a Hall of Fame career mostly elsewhere other than the Colts. and they played excellent football at places in their careers. But as far as with the Colts goes, like Edron James had some absolutely unbelievable times here in Indy. Jonathan Taylor now has two incredible seasons that he's had out of six. I mean, he's got some other productive ones,
Starting point is 00:14:47 but this in 2021 are obviously very comparable. Like him and Edron James, like, take your pick. I can't tell you who's having the most incredible running back moment in Colts franchise history right now because it's it's it's all it's it's it's hard to describe number one for me I said this last night it kind of reminds me of the run ladenian Tomlinson was on when he was with the chargers and he had like 30 touchdowns that year and broke the NFL record I feel like that's what I'm watching like Jonathan is on pace for like 2,200 yards from scrimmage and I think it's like 28.7 or 29
Starting point is 00:15:27 touchdowns or something like he's on an other worldly clip right now so don't take for granted what you're seeing he's not going to be around forever and then don't forget what it looked like when the colts couldn't find a running back forever and it was the you know the ghost of frank gore who was their first one to like break a thousand yards in x amount of years like after joseph had died it took a while for the colts to find a running back again uh so enjoy this while we've got it here in indy because it might be decades until we see running back play like this again. All right. So outside of Jonathan, the past catchers I thought were really, really good.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Oddly enough, even though this offense is insane and they're on a historic pace when it comes to scoring, they have not had a hundred yard receiver yet, which is just an insane stat to me. They've had a couple guys get close. Like Pittman just had eight for 95 yards in a touchdown on Sunday. You know, A.D. Mitchell had over 90 yards. I know Tyler Warren's gotten kind of close a couple times. but still no 100-yard receiver.
Starting point is 00:16:29 And that just goes to show you the way that Daniel Jones is spreading the ball around is really impressive. So again, Pitt, eight catches, 95 yards, and his sixth touchdown of the year, that already ties a career high that he set back in 2021 when Carson Wentz was just force-feeding him the ball each week. So Pitt, maybe as soon as next week, he's going to have a new single-season career high and touchdown reception. And so already a really effective, efficient year for him, I think. He made a few really nice plays. He had that play over the middle where he bubbled the ball and the ball somehow traveled with him in the air as he ran under it and caught it again.
Starting point is 00:17:08 The touchdown was obviously awesome, 20-plus yard play where he cradled it with one arm to bring it in with the defender draped all over him. It was defensive pass interference even. And then his last one, it was like an 18-yard play. I think it was in the fourth quarter, but Daniel Jones was throwing him kind of to the sideline, and he stopped short of going out of bounds and turned it up and got an 18-yard pickup out of it. That drive in general, I thought, was just outstanding for the receivers. Alec Pierce had the 50-yard play on that drive as well. That was on, again, 3rd and 13, not the first time that it's been like 3rd and 12-plus.
Starting point is 00:17:53 And they've dialed up a bomb to Alec Pierce. That is just, if you're a defense, just know if the Colts are in their own territory, deep in their own territory, and it's third and more than 10, it's probably going to Alec Pierce, and you're probably going to lose on that rep. Pierce had two catches for 69 yards. Tyler Warren had another big day, four catches, 53 yards, pretty effective performance for him. Honestly, kind of had more.
Starting point is 00:18:19 I think there was a couple plays where he kind of slipped up or lost his footing a little bit. Just kind of awkward ends to the plays that, you know, I thought there was some extra yards out there for him to get, but I'm not going to complain about what he brings to the table one bit. Josh Downs, he came back from his concussion that he missed last week, and he has now a touchdown in two consecutive games. He had three catches for 39 yards. Of course, he's always finding the first downs, always getting in the end zone, doing something, making the most out of pretty much each reception that he gets. Always an incredibly invaluable piece to the offense. And then the offensive line, I mean, what else can we say about them? It's like week after week, they are just completely dominating and misplacing defensive linemen.
Starting point is 00:19:08 He almost like feel bad for these linemen who start at one spot and then they end up on the ground, 10, 15 yards behind where they began. Tanner Bordellini played out of his mind in this one. He was just absolutely excellent. I saw a lot of good stuff from Quentin Nelson as well, obviously, Bernard Riemann. So the offensive line just working so good. And as an extension of them, you know, the tight-ins, Moe Alley Cox, Tyler Warren. You see a lot of good stuff from Pierce, Doolin, Pittman, even Josh Downs as blockers as well. And I think it helps all these guys want to block even better now that they see what Jonathan Taylor is doing.
Starting point is 00:19:48 It's like if I just do my part and put a little extra effort into this, Jonathan could take this 80 yards. And so everything is working so well in concert right now that it's really hard to complain about anything whatsoever on the offense. And, you know, I don't want to complain about the defense either. You know, that's obviously the area where there's more room for improvement. But we're going to go ahead and talk about that defense here in just a moment. All right, guys, the NFL regular season is already about how.
Starting point is 00:20:18 halfway through and honestly there's nothing better than being in the stadium surrounded by fans cheering on your team but let's be real getting tickets just that whole process can be a hassle between cues login screens prices jumping at checkout it's just frustrating it makes it hard to be excited about even getting into the whole process uh that's why i use game time it's the app that gives the advantage back to the fans game time is fast easy and it's backed by the game time guarantee and that means that you'll always get 100% authentic tickets delivered on time and at the best price plus all fees are included so the price that you see initially when you see what your ticket is going to be that's what you actually pay by the time the transaction's done
Starting point is 00:21:02 i pulled up game time recently just a couple taps that's all amazing deals talking about your favorite NFL games for as low as $100 i think you guys trying to all get out there to Acresure Stadium, formerly Hinesfield and Pittsburgh next week, would be excellent. Maybe, you know, break up a few of those terrible towels and put some blue and white in the stadiums. That might be a little nice touch for the Colts. This app makes it super simple. I could even see the exact view for my seat before buying, you know, if you go into a Pacers game or something, you can see exactly where you're going.
Starting point is 00:21:34 I love the zone deals, too. That means you pick the section. Game Time picks the seats and then you save big. So download the GameTime app. create an account and use code L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N-F-L-N-FL for $20 off of your first purchase. Terms Apply. Again, that's promo code L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N-FL-N-FL-T-L-E-L-N-FL-T-E-L-Tek-E-E-N-Tek-E-A-V-A-B-A-V-A-B-A-V-A-Basket. All right, guys, and obviously the NBA is back.
Starting point is 00:22:04 The Pacers aren't getting off to the best start possible. Injuries are not awesome. Indiana basketball teams have not had the best go of it when it comes to injuries. But you know what? They're going to turn this thing around a little bit and make it a little more enticing to come back. And when you do, there's no better a place to get in on the action than Bhandle, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Even if you miss the start of a game or you want to ride the hot hand,
Starting point is 00:22:28 Bandal has live bets on everything from who's going to score next to the fourth quarter comebacks. Plus, you can even combine your live bets into a same game parlay for a shot at a bigger payout. It keeps every game exciting, especially when your team is making that late push, or your team is just hard to watch at the moment because they're very banged up. You can throw some dollars somewhere else and kind of sweeten the pot a little bit. Right now, Fandle is giving new customers $300 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. So head to fendool.com to sign up and play your game with Fandul, the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
Starting point is 00:23:08 All right. Welcome back every dayers. We are talking about the Colts 38 to 14 win over the Tennessee Titans. It pushes them to seven and one. They have a stranglehold atop the NFL standings. That's a good one. They're going into Pittsburgh next week against the Steelers, which the Steelers are coming off a tough loss.
Starting point is 00:23:28 But that's still a potential playoff preview. Pittsburgh has been near the top of the AFC standings for most of the season. So things are really getting interesting for the Colts. You obviously got Pittsburgh, Germany, the biweek, and then you're at Arrowhead. So things are about to really pick up for the Colts. In this game, you really just wanted to see them show up and not give Tennessee much life. Now, when you're playing with the cards you're dealt in the secondary that you are, like the Colts have, you're going to kind of give up some stuff.
Starting point is 00:24:03 You're going to be playing more zone defense. So you kind of hope that the pass rush will get there a little more, maybe throw a couple extra, you know, pass rushers in there, you know, get some blitzes going. And I thought largely the Colts did a good job. You know, they gave up just 14 points, a touchdown at the beginning, a touchdown at the end. 341 total yards. That's good. You want to keep opponents under 350, really. And like Zach has kind of said recently, you got to kind of just deal with what the defense is going to be.
Starting point is 00:24:35 it's about to really transform into kind of like a true bend but don't break thing. And the bending is the giving up the yards, but the not breaking is getting stops, forcing turnovers, things of that nature, not giving up a ton of points. And that's what the Colts have been able to kind of do effectively. I made a comment in the fourth quarter on Twitter. I was like, you know, the Colts defense is forced a turnover in every game this year so far, but they haven't yet. and right now might be a good time to do it.
Starting point is 00:25:06 And then here comes the Titans on a drive. And I'm watching them from the press box. And it's third and forever. Like I think they're at the Colt 16 yard line. And they got to throw to the end zone. And I said, you can ask James Boyd up in the press box. I said, here comes the interception. Sure enough, came word right into the end zone.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Chris Lamonts makes the cold sack, keeps the cold streak alive a turnover in every game this year. I thought the pass rush generally was fine. Definitely, again, it could be better, like we keep saying. I thought it was a good display by the interior of the Colts defensive line. Defensive tackles, DeForest Buckner, Atatama, Atta, Atabwara, and Neville Gallimore, all had sacks individually. Kenny Moore and Yatu-Latu split one. There were seven hits on Cam Ward, but the only extra one from a defensive end outside of all those that we didn't already mention was J.T. Tuolmolo, I got one as well. Now, to the Colts credit,
Starting point is 00:26:08 Tyquon Lewis and Samson, Debbiecom were both out of this game. So they were down their third and fourth defensive ends. That is understandable. You're just going to be lacking a little bit of juice there, obviously. So, you know, again, they got some good stuff going from the interior. Great. Not quite as much on the outside. You know, what can you do? So just kind of Got to hope like a Taekle and Lewis return soon. Samson, have you come? He's week to week. So you might be dealing with a couple more weeks before he's back.
Starting point is 00:26:39 But it is what it is. You know, Pittsburgh's line isn't the greatest thing in the world. I think the Colts could get after Aaron Rogers a little bit. Obviously, Rogers not as fleet of foot as he used to be. Let's see. I thought individually, Germain Pratt and Quitty Pay were pretty good defending the outside run. for whatever, like when Tennessee did try to establish the run, it felt like they were trying to do it to the outside off tackles and everything,
Starting point is 00:27:08 or even like on stretch plays, and it just was not working. Like, that's where the Colts linebackers are going to be best defending the run, and Jermaine Pratt was right there. So Zeyer Franklin make a couple plays there. Again, Quitty Pay, I thought, did a really nice job as well. I think there was like a jet sweep or an end-around or something where or Lyotu Latu got a great angle on the ball carrier and just kind of forced him out of bounds.
Starting point is 00:27:34 So the Colts did a good job at defending those kind of outside run plays that Tennessee was just not able to establish whatsoever. I thought Cam Bynum made a really important play to break up a pass, blew up Elyke I.O. Manor who seems like he's probably going to be a guy throughout his career that might be a thorn in the Colts side with Cam Ward. but Cam Bynum hit him pretty hard and jarred that ball loose and force and incompletion. Grover Stewart, as always, there to plug up the middle, you know, not allow anything. I think I even saw him, like, pick a guy up at one point and just move him out of the way. Grover is, like, one of the goofiest football players you can see, but, like, it's legal, and he does it very well. He's just hilarious to watch. And then Buddy Johnson.
Starting point is 00:28:28 The revolving door at linebacker to the side of Zaire Franklin continues. Saw Buddy Johnson get a little bit of run there in the red zone. He made a nice run stuff defending the Colts end zone on a play, I think, later in the game. So that was important to see. I still don't think the Colts really have any linebackers that are going to excel much in coverage. But they do have some guys that can kind of sneak and destroy a little bit when you've got those longer developing run plays, they're going to, they're going to kind of stand up there. So make of the linebacker room what it is, but you've got, you've got some guys
Starting point is 00:29:05 that do excel in certain roles. And, you know, the trade deadlines a week away. We're going to talk more about that, obviously. But you kind of embrace what you know your team is good at right now and just kind of lean into the fact that you hope the Colts make a, you know, make a move or two. I'm sure it probably won't be multiple. But make it. an impactful move on defense to maybe mask a couple of the deficiencies that you got there. So that's it for me, guys. That was the game 38 to 14. The Colts moved to 7 and 1 continue their stranglehold atop the AFC and the NFL standings.
Starting point is 00:29:41 I just got to hope that some of these other teams up near the top start to lose a couple of games soon. So the Colts can get a little bit of nice distance and eventually, believe it or not, I can't believe we're saying it at this point, maybe even the number one seed in the AFC playoffs in a first round by. Seems wild to say, but I mean, they're on track for it right now, guys. But all right, thanks for listening to me yet today on making Lockdown Colts your first listen here.
