Hello everybody, welcome to your latest episode of Locked On Colts,
or the Locked On Podcast
Network.
Today's always your host, Evan Sattery, here on Draft Day.
We're here for my mock draft, which is actually going to include, later on in the show, we
get the Pick 21 analysis from great Colts insiders like Kevin Bowen, as well as indie
stars Joel Erickson and Jim Aiello, who are going to give their insight into what they
believe the Colts are going to do, as well as yours truly.
But let's go through the first round of this mock draft. Going to be going
one through 32. If the Colts, for example, do trade back in this scenario, we'll include that
pick as well if they do go in the day two. But in the meantime, I'm going to go one through 32,
all the way up until 21, where we get analysis from Kevin, Joel, Jim, and myself. But let's
start off with number one. Very simple pick. Not going to stay too long in this one either.
The obvious picks at the top of the draft are going to be pretty short.
But Trevor Lawrence is going to be a Jacksonville Jaguar.
I know Colts fans are actually intrigued to see him in this division twice a year,
probably for the next decade or so with Urban Meyer as the head coach.
But a new era in Jacksonville begins.
We're going to have Trevor Lawrence going to the Jacksonville Jaguars at number one overall.
Going into number two, it seems like this has been an obvious pick now for a while, ever since his pro day at BYU. Zach Wilson will be starting
a new era for the New York Jets. He will be their quarterback for the next long-term future after
trading away Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers. It seems like to me that Wilson is the guy, has
been for a while, just like Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. So the first two picks, very simple
there. Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson.
But then when we get to number three overall,
this is where the draft really starts, in my opinion,
because it could go any sort of direction.
The 49ers have been playing really close to the vest,
very coy so far,
and it makes you wonder exactly what they're doing.
We've been hearing a lot of smoke around Mac Jones the whole time.
We heard some smoke around Justin Fields for a little bit.
That's really died off recently.
Trey Lance has been kind of the guy sitting in the wings.
He's been really quiet so far, really too quiet.
We've heard a lot about Matt Jones, Justin Fields,
and Trey Lance is kind of in the distance a little bit.
And that makes me think, I know there's so much smoke around Matt,
but I think that Trey Lance might be their guy.
And I think he has been the whole time for the San Francisco 49ers.
He fits the mold of a guy who comes in, steps in day one,
has the Josh Allen-type prototype with the size, the speed, the arm strength.
I think he's someone who can come in day one.
Maybe you sit him for a little bit if you don't trade Jimmy Garoppolo,
but I think a guy like Trey Lance's talent with that system around him
and that defense, he can step in day one, get the new era started for the 49ers
and really take off.
As you guys know before, the Colts acquired Carson Wentz.
I've been a huge fan of Trey Lance.
I think he's someone that I would have hoped the Colts would have traded up for if they
didn't acquire Carson Wentz.
That makes me think, honestly, with the skill set that he has for the modern NFL, I think
Trey Lance just fits Kyle Shanahan's system very, very well.
And that's where I'm going to go here at number three.
I'm going to go with Trey Lance being the surprise pick here at number three out of
North Dakota State and being the 49ers quarterback of the future.
Who knows what Jimmy Garoppolo's future holds in San Francisco.
We've heard a lot of rumors about New England maybe trading for him this weekend.
We'll have to see on that.
But I think Trey Lance overtakes Mack Jones here for the number three pick overall in
this mock draft.
So let's dive into number four.
So with Trey Lance off the board,
I think the Falcons do not go quarterback.
I think Justin Fields,
the slide is real.
I've been hearing a lot of buzz about maybe the Patriots trading up for him,
maybe the Bears.
A lot of teams seem to think Justin Fields is going to be QB4,
QB5 in this draft.
And with the Falcons especially,
I think they're in win now mode.
They see Drew Brees retiring in the NFC South,
Jameis Winston-Tayson Hill battling out for the starting quarterback spot there.
You have Carolina, who has some good weapons,
but you have Sam Durant, a quarterback,
that is still in the infancy of a rebuild.
Tampa Bay is in a win-now window, of course, if they're winning the Super Bowl.
But I think Atlanta could see themselves like,
I could easily see Arthur Blank saying,
hey, let's just go get Kyle Pitts real quick.
Get out of this offense. Keep Leo Jones around for one more year. Let's run it back and see what happens. I could easily see Arthur Blank saying, hey, let's just go get Kyle Pitts real quick. Get out of this offense. Keep Leo Jones around for one more year. Let's run it back and see
what happens. I could easily see Atlanta being a wild card team next year in the NFC
if all things play well. Matt Ryan is still an above average to average
quarterback in the NFL. I think he's easily a top 15 quarterback. Give him a weapon like
Kyle Pitts at tight end and this offense could take off in Arthur Smith's system. I really think that Kyle
Pitts is their guy here. So I'm going to lock in Kyle Pitts at tight end, and this offense could take off in Arthur Smith's system. I really think that Kyle Pitts is their guy here.
So I'm going to lock in Kyle Pitts, the freakazoid tight end, out of Florida with the number
four overall pick for the Atlanta Falcons.
They stay away from Justin Fields.
They go in the direction of Kyle Pitts, and they're truly, I think, in win-now mode for
the next year or two.
If it doesn't go well, you get off Julio Jones' contract, you get off Matt Ryan's contract,
and within the next couple years, you draft a quarterback of the future.
But you have the weapons in Calvin Ridley. you have Kyle Pitts, you can really grow around
with a new quarterback within the next couple years.
But I think Atlanta, if they were to draft Kyle Pitts, is in a spot where they could
be a 9-10 win team next year if all things go well on the defensive side of the ball
as well.
Let's dive into the fifth overall pick in our mock draft, which I think is a really intriguing one with the Cincinnati Bengals.
It's really between Jamar Chase and Panay Sewell, the offensive tackle out of Oregon.
I'm going to go here with Jamar Chase.
I think the Bengals should go Panay Sewell here to protect Joe Burrow,
but it seems like all the smoke out of Cincinnati right now
as they are locked in on Jamar Chase to add a weapon with T. Higgins and Tyler Boyd.
That would be a very fun aerial attack. Joe Burrow obviously has the obvious chemistry there on Jamar Chase to add a weapon with T. Higgins and Tyler Boyd. That would be a very fun aerial attack.
Joe Burrow obviously has the obvious chemistry there with Jamar Chase from the LSU days.
The last time Jamar Chase played football was with Joe Burrow as his quarterback.
I think it makes a lot of sense for them to go Jamar Chase here,
because you could see why there could be a chance of him being in a position of immediate success
with the Bengals with Joe Burrow.
That aerial attack would be a lot of fun to watch.
You have Joe Mixon there still.
The offensive line depth in this class is very real
where you can get a guy like Alex Leatherwood or Dylan Radins
or Liam Eikenberg at the top of the second round.
You feel comfortable enough to have that guy as your left tackle.
This is a very, very deep offensive tackle class,
and I think the weapons in this class is not so much of that.
So I think they're going to go Jamar Chase here at number five,
add that new weapon in for Joe Burrow,
address the offensive line pretty heavily in day two.
But that Bengals offense will be a lot of fun to watch if that were to happen
because I think it just makes so much sense for them to go in that direction.
But let's lock in Jamar Chase then.
Wide receiver at LSU.
I think he has the star
qualities that a lot of people are looking for. And I think Chase, just with the connection of
Joe Burrow, makes too much sense there. Let's go to number six here, the Miami Dolphins.
And this is a very interesting one too, because Chase is off the board. Pitts is off the board.
Penae Sewell is there. But I think they go Jalen Waddell. I think Waddell is the guy in this class that a lot of NFL teams see as a Tyreek Hill type.
I think he could be the one that really rises up the board surprisingly on draft day
where he could be someone in that 6-7-8 range instead of a guy who slips out of the top 10
like his teammate Devontae Smith might in these mock drafts.
And it actually happened on Thursday night because Waddle has that 4-2 speed, that strength in the contested catch situations
where I think he could really thrive in those types of situations.
Give Tua an old weapon of his as well, and I think you're off and running.
I think you have a really solid offense.
You have a new offensive line that's still being built up a little bit.
I think adding Jalen Waddle to the mix might be a surprise there with Panay Sewell,
but we've seen a lot of mock drafts for national plugged-in insiders have Panay Sewell slip down the boards a little bit,
which could be something to watch out for.
And I think overall, it's something that could really be in play for the Miami Dolphins with Jalen Waddell at number six.
So I'm going to lock in Jalen Waddell, the speedy wide receiver out of Alabama at the number six overall pick.
So we've had three straight weapons go off the board.
Number four, Kyle Pitts to the Falcons, Jamar Chase, five to the Bengals, and Jalen Waddell,
number six to the Miami Dolphins.
So this is where the draft really gets interesting, in my opinion, because if this goes this direction,
number seven for the Detroit Lions, you have to wonder if the Lions start taking trade
calls for guys like Justin Fields or even Mack Jones in this situation.
And I think the Lions are the team that can move back here.
I think Carolina is one to watch out for.
But I think we're going to see a trade here at number seven at this point.
The Justin Fields slide does end.
And I think New England does trade up here from 15 to 7 to go get a guy in Justin Fields
who makes so much sense for their system.
They get up 15, they get their second round pick,
and a future first round pick in next year's draft to go get Justin Fields.
I think adding Fields to that system to sit behind Cam Newton for a year makes too much sense to me.
They need to have Justin Fields take over in Bill Belichick's system
and maybe have another run in them for the next decade or so.
I love Justin Fields' talent.
I love his fit in any system really.
I think he's being overanalyzed right now with the way he quarterbacks football.
And I think, unfortunately for Colts fans, having him slide to number seven and then the Patriots
trading up for him, I think would be a really bad situation for Colts fans. I think Fields is a
really, really good quarterback. Hopefully Carson Wentz does well in Indy, but I think Fields
in New England re-sparks that rivalry for a team like the Patriots.
So we have Justin Fields going to New England Patriots here at number seven overall.
And I think quite honestly, that's a solid fit to see what exactly would happen for him there.
All right, let's dive into number eight in this draft, which is the Carolina Panthers.
And at this point, I know they've been talking about trading back.
But I think we see them stay put here when you see the offensive line talent on the board. No offense tackle has been taken up to number eight at this point, and I think they
run up the card for Panay Sewell. I think they have the weapons there in Carolina. They just
need to add a couple pieces there on the offensive line. I think we see them go Panay Sewell here. I
think the slide for Panay Sewell stops at eight for them, and I think Carolina would be giddy to
get Panay Sewell on board there. I think the Panthers, if they just add more to the offensive line, they pretty much have a complete offense there. They have the
Christian Caffery running passing attack. They have the weapons in DJ Moore and as well Robbie
Anderson. If Sam Darnold pans out there, it could be a team to watch out for. It could play around
500 football next year. They just need to add some more offensive line depth to go with it.
So I'm going to go Panay Sewell, the offensive tackle out of Oregon, the first lineman off the
board here in my mock draft. So let's dive in now to number nine, Denver Broncos. This is an
interesting pivot point here because I think they're a team to watch out for as well with
the tradeback. I mean, we could see a team really move up the board for someone and really make a
lot of sense. And I'm so intrigued here because, I mean, Denver needs to add offensive line.
They need to add some weapons on defense.
Or they can move back here and get a guy later in the draft.
Like, I could see them trading back with Chicago and getting Jeremiah Uusikoromoa at 20.
Like, that would make a lot of sense to me.
But I think they stay put.
I think they go corner here.
And I think it's going to be Patrick Sertain II out of Alabama.
I think this is where the corner run starts.
I think we see back-to-back corners here. So Sertain to Denver, and then we have J.C. Horn, the cornerback
out of South Carolina, going 10 to Dallas. I think both those fits make a lot of sense. You could flip
up any other way with Sertain and Horn, but I think the two corners out of Alabama and South
Carolina go 9 and 10 respectively to Denver and Dallas. So that wraps up part one of my mock draft.
Stay tuned for part two, 11 through 20, following our commercial break.

We are back, number 11 overall here in my mock draft,
releasing today on draft day.
We're going to be hearing later on the show from Kevin Bowen,
Joel Erickson, and Jim Aiello with their thoughts on what the Colts do at 21. But in the meantime, part two of our show is picks
11 through 20. And we're going to go here on the board with the New York Giants, who are a team I
think could be a tradeback as well. But I think they stay put here. It's a really intriguing place
where they're at, though. You have guys like Rashawn Slater on the board. You have Devontae
Smith on the board. You have Micah Parsons on the board.
And then there's like three
names you've heard very solidly around the Giants.
But I think Dave Gettleman, we know he loves boating
through the trenches. So I'm going to go with Rashawn
Slater out of
Northwestern, who I think is a legit
option for the Colts to trade up for if he does start
slipping down into the late teens, but I don't think he does.
I think his range is probably at 8-13.
Rashawn Slater is a plug-and-play guy all across the offensive line.
He makes a lot of sense to help fortify that offense for the Giants.
They added in Kenny Galladay as a weapon.
They have already Sterling Shepard on board there as well.
They have a lot of young, intriguing pieces in New York.
Adding in Rashawn Slater, I think, can help solidify and take the offensive line to the
next level.
So I have Rashawn Slater of Northwestern going to the Giants at 11.
Back on the board here at 12, I think the Eagles were hoping
that one of the corners and corners for Tane would slip to them
based on what I've heard from guys like Daniel Jeremiah.
But in this scenario, I'm going to go with Devontae Smith.
He's such a good prospect that I just don't think he should slip that far in this draft
just based off his size.
It's like overthinking Marvin Harrison.
I'm not saying he's Marvin Harrison 2.0, but he could be.
That's how high I am on Devontae Smith.
And I think him in Philadelphia with Jalen Hurts gives Hurts a legit weapon for one year
to see if Hurts is actually their future or not.
If not, they trade up in next year's draft with three first round picks next year, including
the Colts, more likely than not with Carson Wentz.
I think we're going to see,
honestly, a really good trial run for Jalen Hurts. If it doesn't pan out, it's on him. He has the
weapons. Devontae Smith would really make a big push for them as well. So I'm going to lock in
Devontae Smith, a wide receiver out of Alabama, at pick number 12 here. Going to 13, this is where it gets really interesting to me with the Chargers.
I think this is a trade-up spot. I know that Chicago is very interested in a quarterback.
They're desperate for a quarterback. So is New Orleans. I mean, I wouldn't say New Orleans is
exactly desperate, but I think they're a team to watch out for because we've been hearing so much
smoke around them trading up. If one of the quarterbacks is there here in the middle of the first round,
it would not shock me at all.
But I think the Chargers want to stay in a spot where they can still get an offensive lineman too.
So I'm going to lock in the Chicago Bears trading up here to 13 overall.
Ryan Pace, Matt Nagy are on the hot seat this year.
They need to win.
They need a quarterback on board there.
And maybe Mac Jones is someone like Josh Rosen here too. If a new management comes in there and they want to switch things up and pace and maybe
are gone, that could happen. But I think they're going to lock in on Mac Jones here. Trade up from
20 to 13. Give up a second round pick this year as well as a future first to move up and get Mac
Jones ahead of New Orleans. I think New Orleans will try to get him as well. But I think we see
the Chargers move back up to Panay Su and Rashawn Slater off the board. I think New Orleans will try to get him as well. But I think we see the Chargers move back after Paneso and Rashawn Slater off the board.
I think they feel comfortable enough to go into the 20 range where Chicago is
and hope that one of Christian Derusaw, Elijah Vera Tucker, or Tevin Jenkins is there for them at 20.
I think they'll scoop up either of those guys, and there's a good chance at least one or two of those guys, too,
are there at 20. So I think we're going to see the Bears trade up here in my mock draft
from 20 to 13 and get Mac Jones.
That means five quarterbacks in the first 13 picks are off the board for them.
Going to 14, I think we see Elijah Veritaker go here.
I think that, quite honestly, Veritaker has leaf-rugged Darasol in a lot of mock drafts.
And that does surprise me a little bit because he has inside-outside versatility.
He's probably more so projected as a guard in the NFL.
But we've heard a lot of smoke around Darisaw maybe not having the greatest work ethic.
So I think Vera Tucker, consensusly, has gone over Darisaw, has gone over Tevin Jenkins
due to maybe him not being able to be a left tackle in the NFL, but from some teams' projections.
So Vera Tucker goes to Minnesota, helps solidify their offensive line a little bit more.
I think he's someone to watch out for here at 14.
So Elijah Vera Tucker is the pick for the Vikings at number 14 overall.
We're on the board here with the Detroit Lions,
who moved back from 7 to 15.
I think this is a really easy decision for them.
I think they're going to get Micah Parsons, linebacker at Penn State.
I think it's someone that they probably would have taken at 7 anyways.
I just think Dan Campbell's mentality,
he wants tough, hard-nosed guys that are athletic freaks in there. And Parsons checks every single one of those boxes.
And I think Parsons said they want to start up for the Lions. They move back at a future first
round pick. See how Jared Goff does the next year or two. If Goff flames out, they can go up and
move up for the quarterback next year with multiple first round picks. So I like Micah Parsons to
reset the defensive culture and mentality over there in Detroit for Dan Campbell. So he goes here at 15. Number 16. This is a really interesting one too as well because the corner's
all off the board for Arizona. Then you replace Patrick Peterson. I think it's too much of a
retry for Caleb Favre. There's medical. Same for Greg Newsom. I think he's more of a 20s type of
player. Maybe the Cardinals try to move back here. Maybe they go for a running back too.
But I think they go for a guy I've been seeing a lot of smoke around at the Arizona Cardinals try to move back here. Maybe they go for a running back, too. But I think they go for a guy I've been seeing a lot of smoke around at the Arizona Cardinals.
It's Zayven Collins, a freakish linebacker-defensive end hybrid out of Tulsa.
I think this is probably where he's going to go, if I had to guess.
Just based off all the mocks I've seen so far in the last 24 hours,
Zayven Collins is one that you should really watch out for.
He can play defensive end in a pinch.
He can play outside linebacker.
Him and Isaiah Simmons is a freakish linebacker duo.
I mean, that'd be really a lot of fun to watch.
Maybe it's questionable by Steve Kime to do back-to-back linebackers in the first round.
But man, Collins and Simmons would be a lot of fun there.
And I'm going to go Zayvon Collins at number 16 overall.
Maybe a little bit of a reach.
But I think Steve Kime, it sounds like, is pretty enamored with Zayvon Collins.
So I'm going to go with him at number 16 overall to pair with Isaiah Simmons
and the Cardinals defense to help reset a little bit more.
Number 17, this is another intriguing, intriguing pick,
is the Las Vegas Raiders.
They could go in a lot of different directions.
I really believe they could go defensive line here like the Christian Barmore,
or they can go offense tackle.
Darisol is still there.
Tevin Jenkins is still there.
Or they can go with, I mean, maybe Jeremiah Usakoromoa, the linebacker out of Notre Dame.
There's a lot of directions they could go here.
But I think with Gus Bradley being the defensive coordinator there, the Raiders need to add more to their defense.
They need to add a lot more speed.
And I think I'm going to have them taking Jock, Jeremiah Owusu-Koromoa at 17.
It's been one of my favorite fits in the draft process.
Owusu-Koromoa is 17. It's been one of my favorite fits in the draft process. Owusu-Koromoa is kind of like a Gus Bradley dream
as far as a defensive weapon goes.
You can play him all over the defense.
So I have them going Jeremiah Owusu-Koromoa,
the linebacker safety hybrid out of Notre Dame.
At number 17 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders.
I just love that fit all around for both prospect and team.
Number 18.
This is where I think we get the first edge rusher off the board,
and that's Quidipe, the edge rusher out of Michigan.
I've been seeing a lot of places have him in the 10, 11, 12 range.
He might even go higher tonight in the draft,
but I think 18's his floor based off everything I've read so far
from National, Plugged, and Insiders.
So Quidipe is a fit, and obviously in Brian Flores' defense,
can move him all around the line,
can even drop back in coverage with his freakish athleticism. So I think Quidipe is a solid fit and obviously in Brian Flores' defense, can move him all around the line, can even drop back in coverage with his freakish athleticism.
So I think Quidipe is a solid fit all around for the Miami Dolphins,
and one that I'm going to lock in here with number 18 overall.
The first edge rusher of the board, one of my favorite fits for the Colts at 21.
But unfortunately at this point, I don't think Quidipe is going to be there for the Colts at 21.
So I think he's going to go number 18 to Miami, and that's going to really impact, I think, the draft,
because that means Jalen Phillips, more often than not, is going to be there for the Colts at 21. So I think he's going to go number 18 to Miami, and that's going to really impact the draft because that means Jalen Phillips, more often than not, is going to be there for the Colts
at 21. The question is now, will they pass his medicals? That's the big question
here. But let's move on to number 19 overall, which is the
Washington football team. They can go in a lot of different directions here too. They can go linebacker,
they can go offense tackle. I think for the Washington
football team, hopefully we're going to get a quarterback
here, but I think they feel comfortable enough to get an offense tackle on board.
I think they're going to go Christian Derusaw here.
The local fit with Derusaw.
They need a plug-and-play offensive lineman.
Derusaw makes a lot of sense here.
For Ryan Fitzpatrick this year, they have a solid offense that has some potential and
elite defense that might take another step forward in 2021. I think Darasol is just a really solid option all around for the
Washington football team. You can really help him elevate his game to the next level. And there's
some questions around Darasol late in the process, but I think he's one of the best left tackles in
this class. I have him as my third best offense tackle behind Slater, behind Sewell. I think he's
a plug and play option for the Washington football team and a great pick here at number 19
overall for Washington.
Next pick on the board is a tradeback. If you remember,
the Bears moved up from 20 to 13,
got Mac Jones. The Chargers slid back
at the Panay Sewell to not slide. They are here
at number 20 overall.
Let's throw this at your way
for the Los Angeles Chargers.
It's Tevin Jenkins, the offensive tackle
out of Oklahoma State.
I think he's a great fit for what the Chargers want to do.
You can play him on the left side with his athleticism.
You can play him on the right side if you want to.
They just need to draft an offensive lineman.
They moved back here from seven.
They moved back seven spots from 13 to 20, gained a future pick, gained an additional
pick in this year's draft on day two.
I think it's a really solid investment for the Chargers with Tevin Jenkins.
I think he's a great fit along that Chargers offensive line. It's not rebuilt with
Corey Lindsley at center. Justin Herbert had a great year in 2021. I think it's a solid all-around
pick here for Tevin Jenkins to the Los Angeles Chargers number 20 overall. Now we're going to
get into the good nitty-gritty of today's mock draft. Stay tuned after our commercial break.
You're going to be hearing from myself, Kevin Bowen, Jim Aiello, and Joel Erickson, breaking down what the Colts do at number 21. And then
from there, we're going to dive into the last portions of our first draft. So stay tuned.

We're on the board here for the Annapolis Colts at pick number 21 overall.
What are the Colts going to do?
That's the big question here with how the board has shaken out.
Offense tackles have pretty much gone in this portion of the draft.
Kevin Jenkins, Christian Derusaw are all off the board.
Slater is also off the board.
So the best players available, I have to say, probably looking at the entire list here.
A couple trades down, if we also want to go through the list here.
New England Patriots trade up from 15-7.
They got Justin Fields.
The Micah Parsons went to Detroit Lions after they moved back from 7-15.
The Bears moved up from 20-13.
Got Mack Jones, who slid down the board a little bit after the smoke,
from San Francisco.
Trey Lance went instead of him.
So the Bears moved up in after the smoke from San Francisco. Trey Lance went instead of him.
So the Bears moved up in a desperation move and got him.
Chargers moved back and still got an offensive tackle and Tevin Jenkins number 20 overall.
But the best players on the board here, it really seems like to me,
it's a tough spot.
I think it is a tough spot for Indy just based off the medical questions
with some of these guys on the board.
Jalen Phillips, the edge rusher out of Miami,
tops the board here on Draft Network's board. You also have Alex Leatherwood out of
Alabama as a left tackle option. Greg Newsome, the cornerback out of Northwestern, is a legit
option here. Aziz Ojolari out of Georgia is slipping down boards due to medical concerns.
You also have Caleb Farley, the cornerback out of Virginia Tech, who might slip out of round one
due to medical concerns. And then Joe Tryon, an edge rusher out of Washington, is getting some late steam,
as is Jason Owe, the edge rusher out of Penn State.
From there, it seems like tradeback is a legit option here.
If they don't feel comfortable with guys like Phillips or even a player like Newsom,
I think this is where the Colts could really be in a position to trade back.
But let's go ahead and dive in to analysis from Kevin Bowen, Joel A. Erickson, and Jim Aiello
on what they think the Colts are going to do in number 21 overall.
Then after they finish up here over the next couple minutes, I am going to dive into my prediction.
So enjoy here. We're going to start off with Kevin, then go into Joel and Jim.
All right, Kevin Bowen here. It's draft time, our favorite time of the year.
I guess I'll start with just kind of goals I feel like the Colts need to accomplish in this draft
to me solidifying the offensive line probably goes without saying but it's such a critical
component to what Chris Ballard believes in and obviously with losing Anthony Costanzo you gotta
find out that five-man unit and especially the guy over at left tackle I think impactful
pass defender would be the second goal on the list
and you know you can look at that one of two ways obviously edge rusher
uh would be the obvious answer but you know you got to acknowledge what jim mercy said
a few weeks back and realize that a corner if you're going to be willing to
i think play a little bit more defenses and and you and mix up coverages and things like that.
I think that is something that you have to keep in mind as well.
I think if possible, another skill piece, I think in tight end, potentially wide out.
And then lastly, I think adding the 2022 asset.
You got to look ahead a little bit to next year's draft,
realize you don't have that first round pick and obviously trading back could lend to that um if we're going to get into the three big positions
of need for the colts let's start at left tackle you know is christian derisau going to be there
at number 21 i think that's the biggest question you have there i haven't seen many
mocks where he is still there at number 21 so if he he's not there, then it's, is Tevin Jenkins worthy of 21? Is Samuel Cosby worthy of
21? Leatherwood, Liam Eikenberg, those guys, or do you view it as kind of a trade back scenario?
When you look at edge rusher, you know, to me, it's kind of quitty pay Jason Owe in that range obviously Owe has
traits that I know Chris Bowerd has to salivate over but it's a lack of production that you have
to acknowledge there as well so those are some factors that you certainly have to take into
consideration in the second round Joe Tryon and Joseph Asai are a couple of guys that, for really different reasons, I think are a bit intriguing.
I think Tryon gives you a frame that could potentially be a three-down guy for a long time for you.
Joseph Asai, you know, just some really salivating athletic traits and a guy that's played with tremendous effort.
Jalen Phillips, for me,
it's just a really, really tough evaluation when you talk about medical redshirt and things
like that.
As we move over to corner, you know, you've probably got four top corners in this draft,
and if it really is going to be offensive heavy early, then there could be the one there
at 21.
Greg Newsom out of Northwestern is a name I keep on coming back to.
A guy that if he was there at 21, I would be curious to see if the Colts would be willing to trade back there.
Obviously, the trade debate, so much of it, of course, depends on board and trade partner.
I always find it funny when people are like, oh yeah, the Colts are 100% trading back.
Well, you obviously have to, first first off know what the board looks like and then secondly
you have to find a willing trade partner which is not always the case either and then as I was
saying earlier I think a trade back for 21 or excuse me for a 2022 pick from number 21 overall
makes a lot of sense when you look ahead to next year's draft capital so um
I'll go with the trade back and I'll go with Samuel Cosme that's who I had in my mock draft but
I do think if Greg Newsom's there at number 21 overall he would be hard to um say no to
for me the more I look at this draft everything just sort of comes back to a trade back
it just feels like the way things are going,
the guys that you'd want to take,
the difference makers that Ballard is probably talking about
are off the board by the time they get to 21,
and that there's going to be a stockpile maybe
of some of the other positions that we think they're interested in the most
in terms of offensive line, defensive end, those kind of things.
And so when you have a cloud with a lot of guys on it, that's when you move back. I think everyone's
talked about some of the places that might want to move up. I mean, the Saints at 28, that's
not even a report. The Saints always want to move up. The Packers have moved up a lot under
Brian Gutekunst. You know, there's a lot of different teams that could maybe move up.
Baltimore now has two first round picks and maybe might be willing to part with one of their other picks to move up
there's going to be opportunities i think for for the colts to trade back and it just feels like the
way this is going that they're going to get it to a spot where they want to trade back and get more
picks i i think they have to get an offensive tackle.
I think they know that.
It's been the plan all offseason.
Jim Irsay sort of told us that.
So I guess they go offensive tackle at some point.
I am not as down on defensive end as some other people think based on what Chris Ballard said last week.
He said the same stuff about wide receiver last year, and then he took Michael Pittman. So there's a really good chance that they go defensive end at some point.
They've got to add something there. I don't think you feel really, really good about that rush end
position with Kamoko Ture still coming off of the injury. Ben Banigou hasn't done much yet.
I know he challenged Ben Banigou, but there's no way to know if he's going to respond the way Taequann Lewis did. And Lewis did it in a backup role. You need both Toure and Banigou to
hit this year to be able to keep him doing that. So I think there's a good chance they had somebody
at defensive end. Don't know when. But ultimately, if I was making a prediction for the way things
are going to go, my guess is it's a trade back. They pick up more picks and end up hitting more needs than maybe any of us realize.
And maybe some needs that at first glance when they make the pick,
we think, I don't know why Ballard did that.
And then we find out in the fall it all makes sense.
So that's my guess.
Trade back, pick up more picks, a few picks that might surprise,
and ultimately there's a plan behind it. Like much of the rest of Colts Nation, I'm an official member of Team Trade Back.
I, like many people around the league, believe Colts General Manager Chris Ballard is one of
the best talent evaluators in the NFL. But it's like Ballard himself said recently,
this is not an exact science and you need a little luck. The more picks you have,
the more chances of luck are going to show up. I couldn't agree more. Saying that, I can guarantee
I'll really like some of the players who will be available at number 21, and if the Colts feel like
they can't pass up on someone like Oklahoma State Mauler, Tevin Jenkins, or the incredible athlete
that is Michigan's Quiddie Pay at that spot, I totally understand. I'm a huge fan of both,
as well as a few others who could be available. However, I think the Colts are in a fortunate
position in that their biggest needs align with the draft's depth,
and a trade back for number 21 to pick up extra capital puts them in a position to take advantage
of it. They need an offensive tackle to replace the retired Anthony Costanzo, and there are a
handful of excellent tackles who will probably still be on the board around 5, 10, or 15 picks
later. The Colts also need some help on the edge. This is a class teeming with intriguing pass rushers. In my mind, Indianapolis could also look to fortify its future at cornerback
and a wide receiver. Places where aging veterans like Xavier Rhodes and T.Y. Hilton are occupying
important positions on the depth chart and are playing on just one-year contracts. They could
use some depth and safety and along the defensive front. Put simply, there are a lot of positions
for the Colts to attack early in the draft, and a trade down allows for the opportunity to attack more of them, more than once if they so
choose. That being said, I expect the Colts to move back into the mid to late 20s or even 30s
of the first round. After that, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to move back again,
but assuming they stick somewhere in that area, I expect them to target an offensive tackle to
round out their already excellent offensive line. The Colts must provide new quarterback Carson
Wentz with every possible tool he needs to succeed, and excellent offensive line. The Colts must provide new quarterback Carson Wentz
with every possible tool he needs to succeed,
and an offensive line that can not only adequately protect him as a passer,
but provide him the edge of a proficient running game,
is maybe the best way to do it.
It's like Coach Frank Reich said throughout the offseason.
They don't need or want Wentz to be Superman.
They just need him to run the offense.
With that in mind, I like the Colts to select Texas tackle Sam Cosme.
Now, Cosme's 33-inch arms are a little concerning. Many of the best tackles in the NFL have 34-inch
arms or longer, but Cosme can make up for his relative lack of reach with his elite athleticism
and strong hands. He started 34 straight games at Texas, played both right and left tackle,
and was voted team captain during his registered junior season. At 22 years old, he's one of the
younger tackles in the class, allowing for the possibility that he still has lots more upside. If the Colts don't
select a tackle here, I also like Washington's defensive end Joe Tryon, who offers a nice
marriage of traits and production on the edge. Tryon registered eight sacks as a registered
sophomore in 2019 and led the Huskies in tackles for loss. He opted out last year, meaning there
isn't a ton of tape on him, but he checks almost all the size and athleticism boxes you'd want him
to check. He's not a freak like Penn State Chase in no way, but he has the
tools to succeed. That said, if I'm deciding between the two, I'm taking Cosme over Tryon
with the understanding there are still plenty of quality edge players in this class that can be had
on days two and three of the draft. With some extra picks after trading back, I should be able
to take care of that need. To wrap this up, I'll add this. Don't be surprised if the Colts go a
different direction with their first pick, maybe a wide receiver or a cornerback. Ballard will
largely go with the best player available, and that's a good idea most of the time. So fair
warning. Don't be shocked if the Colts' first selection doesn't address one of their more
glaring needs. That was great stuff there. Really amazing, amazing stuff from Kevin, Joel, and Jim
providing their analysis over the last
couple of minutes on what the Colts are going to do here at 21, whether it be trading back,
staying put, whenever the option's there as well.
I am now going to provide my analysis here for the 21st pick in the draft based off what's
happened so far, picks one through 20.
It's a really interesting situation.
Like everyone outlined there, trading back probably isn't the most logical option here.
I think with the guys on the board,
Jalen Phillips is the biggest question medically.
I don't know if the Colts are going to clear him.
I know it's a different situation than Montez Sweat,
but it makes me think, especially in a year like this,
that I really believe that they might not clear him medically.
That's just a prediction.
Hopefully, if he is a pick, I am wrong on that,
and he's going to have a great career in Indy.
But I just don't know if they feel comfortable clearing Jalen Phillips,
especially with the off-field concerns as well.
I think they'll pass on Jalen Phillips here.
I really think that's the hunch on my end.
I think they're going to pass on Jalen Phillips here at 21 if he's there,
just with too many questions around this.
And then you see guys like Alex Leatherwood there,
our offense tackle, who I think would be available in the late first, early second round range. Same goes for Cosme, Ike, and Berg-Raydons,
all these guys. And you go over to edge rusher, Phillips, like I just mentioned, I don't know if
they're going to clear medically. Ogilari has medical questions now as well. His knee got
flagged at the combine recheck. So I think he's a guy who's going to slide down boards. Joe Tryon
and Jason Owe, I think our reach is at 21. So when you add that all together
at edge rusher and at offense tackle, wide receiver is another one as well. Elijah Moore,
slot receiver, I just don't think he's a fit in this offense. I just think that with Paris Campbell
on board, the Colts are so bullish on Paris Campbell that I think they're not going to take
a wide out on day one. Maybe they go in a different direction, but maybe Rashad Bateman makes sense,
but I just don't know
if that's BPA at this point in the draft. I think
BPA might be a guy like Jalen Phillips,
but I think with the Colts wanting to
move back here, I think they want to recoup some of that Carson
Wentz trade value. I'm going to put my prediction
in right now, Colts fans. I say the Colts
do move back from 21, just based
on how the board has fallen, and they move back
with the New Orleans Saints, who are the
28th pick in this year's draft.
There has been way, way, way too much smoke
around the New Orleans Saints
when they move up in this year's draft.
I mentioned before they might try to trade up for a quarterback,
but I think they move up here 221 overall.
They get up their two third-round picks in this year's draft,
98 and 105, which is a comp pick.
So the Colts have two third-round picks,
a first and a second, So three picks on day two.
There's two late third round picks getting moved as ammunition if they want to move up later in
the third round or in the second round. I just think that it gives the Colts a lot of flexibility
and versatility to do stuff on day two of the draft that they want to. So I had them moving
back here from 21 to 28. Staying in the first round, I think it's an important note here because
it gives you that fifth year option on a guy. It's been a very long time since the Colts made
a pick in the first round, 2018 with
Quentin Nelson.
So you move back your seven spots, gain two third-rounders.
I think it's a win-win for both sides.
And it sounds like all the smoke around the Saints.
I know Caleb Farley is someone that has not been cleared medically.
I've actually seen a lot of mock drafts have him go in the second round.
But knowing New Orleans, knowing how aggressive they are, knowing that they only need probably
another weapon or two on defense to make a big impact, I think we see them go
for Caleb Farley here. He's a top 10 prospect without the medical issues. I think if he hits
with Marshawn Lattimore, that really gives him two really great, amazing man corners that can
lock down both sides of the field, gives him a lot more versatility to play, maybe more zone
coverage as well. So I'm going to lock in Caleb Farley here.
The Saints leaf-frog Tennessee Titans,
who probably would have taken Farley in this scenario
if he was there at 22.
I have them going Caleb Farley
and the Colts moving back to 28 overall
with the New Orleans Saints.
So let's dive into number 22.
The Titans get leaf-frogged for Caleb Farley.
I think they go in the direction of a wideout here.
I have them going Elijah Moore now,
the Ole Miss wide receiver.
I think they would have liked Zayvon Collins, who went at 16-2.
Caleb Farley obviously would have been an option.
I think Greg Newsome at 22 is a legit option for Tennessee as well.
But I think they need another weapon, losing Corey Davis.
I think Elijah Moore makes a lot of sense there as a slot guy.
He could play a little bit outside as well.
Him and A.J. Brown, Ole Miss duo, I think would be a fun matchup for Ryan Tannehill.
They're a heavy-based run team, but some explosive juice into that offense for Tennessee. I think it makes a lot of sense for
them there. Going to 23 for the New York Jets as their second first-round pick, I think quite
honestly this is probably where Jalen Phillips' slide ends, I have to guess. I just think Phillips
goes on the board here to the Jets. They need another pass rusher. They added Carl Lawson.
You have Lawson and Phillips on each side of each other.
That's a really appealing front four for the New York Jets now,
adding in Quentin Williams.
We know Joe Douglas is like Chris Bauer, loves to go through the trenches.
Got his quarterback in Zach Wilson, number two.
Adds a legit, maybe the best pass rusher in this draft,
and Jalen Phillips here at 23.
So I'm going to go Jalen Phillips to the New Yorkers or to the New York Jets, excuse me, here
at number 23 overall. We're on the board
now at 24 with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I think this is a running back. I'm going to go
Najee Harris. There's been a lot of smoke around the Steelers
wanting to get a running back. They let James Conner
walk to the Arizona Cardinals this past offseason.
I think running back's the pick here.
The offensive line does pretty much wiped out at this point.
I think it's kind of a reach to go someone at 24
here. I think Najee Harris is a play-and-play guy.
They need to add a spark to their run game.
I think adding in Najah Harris makes an awful lot of sense here.
So I'm going to go Najah Harris, the running back out of Alabama,
with the 24th overall pick.
Going to the Jaguars now, our second team in the first round,
multiple first-round picks.
They got Trevor Lawrence number one overall.
I'm going to give them here.
It's interesting. I mean, they could go safety. They could go any sort of that. They could go
offense tackle if they want to. I'm going to go with Trayvon Morgue, the safety out of TCU.
There's been a lot of connections with Jacksonville, Trayvon Morgue. I think they're at his
pro day. They've been in connection with him a lot, according to what I've read. So I'm going
to lock in Trayvon Morgue, the safety out of TCU, to add in a backline leader to
their defense.
They need to have some more stability in defensive backfield.
Adding Morgue here at 25 really gives them that a little bit.
So I will go Trayvon Morgue, the safety out of TCU, at number 25 overall for the Jacksonville
Jaguars.
Number 26, the Cleveland Browns.
I think they need to add someone to the front four of their defense.
And a guy who's been rising on boards a lot lately, and this seems like it might be his floor quite honestly now,
is Joe Tryon, the edge rusher out of Washington.
Actually, Daniel Jeremiah had Tryon going 21 to the Colts in his final mock draft.
I've seen Tryon going anywhere from 21, 23,
and I think 26 has been his floor in a lot of mock drafts now,
opted out this past year of Washington.
I think Tryon is just someone who's going to sneak into round one.
He makes a lot of sense for what the Browns want to do. He can play a year behind Jadeveon Clowney and then from there
maybe take over Clowney's role. Very athletic, very bendy. He makes a lot of sense there for
the Cleveland Browns here at 26. Number 27, our third team with multiple first round picks,
the Baltimore Ravens are on the clock at 27. They also traded Orlando Brown and they got the 31st
pick from Kansas City.
So we're going to have them either go in the direction of a wide receiver,
or they could go in the direction of an edge rusher, or even right tackle.
I mean, I could easily see them replace Orlando Brown in this year's draft.
They've been in contact with Alejandro Villanueva, who's still in the free agent market.
But for 27, I'm going to go in the direction of a guy who is very bendy, very explosive.
He's a freak athlete.
Jason Owe, number 27 overall to the Baltimore Ravens.
He just seems like a raven to me.
I mean, if he hits his ceiling, that's a freak on the edge for the Baltimore Ravens.
Don Wink Martindale could do a lot of things with him,
rushing him from the outside, inside,
even play some linebacker with his 4'3 speed at 260-plus pounds.
That's just crazy numbers to look at with Jason Owe.
His spider web on mockdraftable.com is an absurd thing to look at.
It's like DK Metcalf for defense.
So I think that Jason Owe does sneak into round one at some point.
Just the traits are too much to not take a risk on.
And I think the Ravens do that here at pick 27 with Jason Owe, the edge rusher out of Penn State.
Number 28, back up on the board here, the Indianapolis Colts.
The edge rushers are kind of wiped out now at this point.
You had Phillips, Tron, and Owe go in the last seven picks.
So at this point, you're probably leaning towards offense tackle.
I think that's something to really watch out for here.
And I think, oh, this is tough. Just because I really don't know if the Colts might trade back again here.
Like, I would not be shocked at all if the Colts traded back again.
Because the edge rushers on the board, Aziz Ojolari, Boogie Basham,
Peyton Turner, top of the list.
Go to offense tackle, you have Leatherwood, Cosme, Eichenberg, Radins,
all on the board here still.
And you also go to Whitehouse if you want to.
You have Rashad Bateman still on the board.
I think that's very much in play. And same could be for corner. Greg Newsome. He's still on the
board for them as well. Man, this is a really tough one. I don't know exactly where I would
lean here just with all these guys on the board still. I'm going to go with it. I'm going to go
with Greg Newsome, the cornerback out of Northwestern, the Colts trade back. Still get a guy that I think the Colts are enamored with.
Chris Bauer was actually at Northwestern's Pro Day.
He has a lot of intel over there.
They drafted Anthony Walker in 2017.
Maybe it was for Sean Slater as well, but Slater, of course,
went number 11 overall to New York Giants in this mock draft.
But moving back seven spots and getting Greg Newsome here at 28,
I think is great, great value.
I think it's the best player available on the board for the Colts.
He checks some boxes.
He gives them a future long-term corner.
You can have him play opposite Xavier Rhodes this year, and then once Rhodes' contract
ends up this year, get a comp pick, and then from there, you go ahead and play Yasin or
Tel, whoever it might be at the other boundary corner.
Newsome's your long-term CB1 and Kenny Moore playing the slot.
I think Newsom is kind of like the good character,
the A-plus off-the-field version of Marcus Peters.
I mentioned this in the podcast earlier this week.
Almost identical traits to Marcus Peters,
who Chris Bauer was a member with himself in Kansas City
and helped actually lead that pick for Marcus Peters with the Kansas City Chiefs.
I could see him thinking this could be Marcus Peters 2.0 without the off-field concerns.
So I'm going to lock in Greg Newsome, the cornerback out of Northwestern with the number
28 overall pick here.
I just think it makes too much sense if he's on the board at 28.
You move back, you get two extra third round picks.
You can still move up and down the board if you want.
Get a left tackle at 54.
I think that's how it's going to play out here.
I mean, I would not be shocked at all if they go in the direction of a left tackle here at 28. I think this's how it's going to play out here. I mean, I would not be shocked at all
if they go in the direction of a left tackle here at 28.
I think this is where the run of left tackles could start.
But getting Newsome, that's BPA in my opinion,
and that's how Chris Bauer has mentioned many times
not going to force position at pass rusher, at left tackle.
So I'm going to lock in Greg Newsome,
Northwestern cornerback, got 28 after the Colts traded back,
got two third-rounders in the process from the New Orleans Saints.
So let's wrap up this mock draft now, Colts fans. I'm curious to see what you think from the New Orleans Saints. So let's wrap up this mock draft now, Colts fans.
I'm curious to see what you think if this were to happen,
but let's wrap up the mock draft now going 29-32.
Green Bay Packers on the board here.
I think this is where Rashad Bateman goes.
I think the Aaron Rodgers stuff came out today with him being disgruntled.
I think they need to add a weapon ASAP for him,
and that's what they do here.
Pretty quick and simple.
Rashad Bateman, wide receiver out of Minnesota.
His thing makes too much sense here for the Green Bay Packers.
You add in a weapon for him.
Get someone on the field that's better than Devin Funches,
that can be an inside-out threat.
I love Bateman's tape.
He's one of my favorite players in the draft.
But I just think positional value-wise,
he probably slips to late round one, early day two.
And I think the Green Bay hops on Bateman if he is here at 29.
Number 30 on the board, Buffalo Bills.
A lot of smoke around Travis Etienne.
They might even trade up to where the Colts are at 21 to leapfrog guys like the Jets,
the Jaguars, the Steelers if they're locked on Etienne.
But he slips here to 30 in my mock draft.
I think Etienne's a plug-and-play option at running back for the Bills.
They need some juice in the running game.
One of the worst rushing teams in NFL last year alongside the Pittsburgh Steelers who got Najah Harris in this mock draft. I think ETN is a plug-and-play option at running back for the Bills. They need some juice in the running game. One of the worst rushing teams in the NFL last year alongside the Pittsburgh Steelers
who got Najah Harris in this mock draft. I think adding in Travis ETN is an
explosive, explosive piece of this offense. Him and Stephon Diggs, Cole Beasley,
that's a really fun unit up there in Buffalo with Josh Anthony throwing the football. So I'm going to lock in
Travis ETN running back out of Clemson with the 30th overall pick.
Pick 31, Baltimore Ravens once again.
I think here with the wide receiver going off the board, they went Jason Owe at 27.
I think this is probably where they go for an offense tackle.
I think right tackle makes a lot of sense here to add in someone who can plug and play.
And someone who's been getting a lot of love lately on the boards is Liam Eikenberg.
I think he'd come in and be a right tackle for Baltimore.
He probably is more so a right tackle or inside guard with his arm length than he is a left tackle.
You can have him replace Orlando Brown, have him and Ronnie Stanley, the Notre Dame bookends,
protecting Lamar Jackson.
Eikenberg's nasty as well in the run game.
They're a heavy run scheme, of course, in Baltimore.
I love the fit there.
I also thought about Alex Leatherwood here, but I have not
seen Leatherwood really at all in
mock drafts with plugged in guys like Daniel Jeremiah and
Benjamin Albright. So I think I've seen Eichenberg
a lot more than I have Leatherwood
in mock drafts. So I'm leaning towards Eichenberg here
at 31, getting Notre Dame product on the board
here in the first round, and that's what happens. Liam
Eichenberg, number 31 overall
to the Baltimore Rams after they took Jason Owe at
27. And at number 32, this is where the final pick of our mock draft.
I appreciate everyone listening in today.
The Buccaneers, they can really just go BPA here.
I mean, I think they go Christian Barmore, the defensive lineman out of Alabama.
I think, honestly, this is someone that you should watch out for
who could slip down the boards.
Character concerns, just positional value,
one of the worst defense tackle groups in this year's draft. I think
this is someone that will slip down the boards
into the late 20s, early 30s,
and the Bucs scoop him up here to replace Ndamukong Suh
after this year. Barmore can be an interior piece,
rotational piece in 2021,
but in 2022 and beyond, he plays
as a Vita Vea. That's a really fun inside
fit for the Bucs defense. So that wraps it up,
guys. That is our mock draft, the day of
the 2020 NFL Draft. Thanks to
Kevin Bowen, Joey Erickson, and Jim Aiello
for their insights and their predictions.
And what do you guys think about my prediction, which is
training from 21 to 28,
the Saints move up to get Caleb Farley,
the Colts move back and get their own cornerback in Greg
Newsome, while adding two third-round picks
where they give positional value, go
really the BPA route and try to address
left tackle and edge rusher on day two of the draft
and move around the board if they want to.
So thanks again for listening, guys.
That'll be the end of our podcast today.
And stay tuned tonight for the NFL Draft.
