Hello everyone, my name is Zach Hicks,
your resident film nerd over at horseshoehuddle.com.
And of course I'm joined as always by Jake Arthur,
our boots on the ground for the site.
Today we're talking about the Colts three biggest needs.
We're gonna break them down into three segments
on this show, talk about them in depth and talk about, you know, some of the in-house options, the Colts have, and some outside free agents the Colts could look to bring in for competition or heck, maybe even to start at some of these spots.
So Jake, let's kick it off with the biggest need on the roster right now.
And that is obviously linebacker.
I think I speak well for both of us here in saying we like Jalen Carlis. We really do like Jalen Carlis and honestly him having a
chance to start this next season I think is perfectly fine. Maybe it's a little
rich for a former fifth round pick going into year two to to be a starter but
look if he proves it in camp I'm all for it. The problem is, it is seeming a little bit like he's being
handed a job when there's really not much backing for him getting handed the job, so
to speak. Like he played like six games last season, played well in those six games, but
that's hardly enough of a sample size to just give the job to a former day three pick from
the 2024 NFL draft. So as much as I like Jalen Carlis, I think
the Colts probably need to do some additions here. They do have a few in-house options.
Shegu Aloubi is still on the team. They added Hunter Wohler in the draft who'd probably play
some linebacker. Cam McGrown and Jacob Phillips are there as well. But if that's your linebacker
room, I think you feel great about special teams. I'm not sure how great you feel about the starting group right now, though.
Yeah. And apologies on Zach's part for not mentioning Liam Anderson and Austin Ajakye.
Sorry, sorry. Liam Anderson, Austin Ajakye as well.
Liam Anderson, I know that's your boy right there, Jake.
Oh, yeah. No. So I agree.
I mean, I do like Jalen Carlisle a lot, but I think something the Colts tend
to live in this blissful ignorance at times where they rely heavily on guys who've been
banged up. You know, we've seen it with Juju Brance. We've seen it, you know, even with
Kenny Moore before, you know, there's there's Julian Blackman, Julian Blackman. Yeah. They've
been last year that that really bit them hard.
And again, I know why they're relying on these guys
because they're talented,
but they're choosing to live in this world
where these guys are gonna stay healthy.
And the track record just says
that's not necessarily gonna be the case.
We only have one year of Carlis.
And so far he's only been able to play half the year.
Like I think if he plays a full year,
which he probably could, like it was his ir thing didn't seem to be like
some sort of chronic issue.
But again,
You're you're not giving yourself very much leeway in the event that they do get hurt like shaggy
Ulubi I know they like him too and they think he's getting better all the time because
When they signed when they signed him initially,
when he came into the league, one of their biggest issues
with him was basically needing reps
to help diagnose pass versus run and things like that.
And obviously, a couple of years down the road now,
I think they like his trajectory.
But they haven't really done anything.
I think Hunter Wohler, the plan for him is to be a core special teamer
and to fill in on defense when needed. Maybe they can do a couple things with him like
dime linebacker and things like that. But overall, they just haven't done anything to
back that up. It goes against what Chris Ballard heavily leaned into after the season was,
I haven't done a good enough job,
bolstering things, making it more competitive and keeping guys on edge.
I don't think Jalen Carlis is a guy that you have to keep on edge.
But again, if he gets hurt, what are you gonna do?
Is it gonna be a Luby and Zyra Franklin?
Cuz that doesn't seem like the most appealing tandem.
Yeah.
And that kind of segues into my next question I was going to ask you and kind of put out
there is, do we think any of these guys they currently have on the roster have that jump
in them to be a guy who can push Jaylen Cartlis?
Like, is Segu Aloubi going to make that jump this year?
Can Hunter Woller surprise out of camp?
Maybe Cam McGrone or Jake, I mean, Jacob Phillips has a lot of experience in the NFL, but he
was available for the Colts assigned to a futures deal. So we're not talking about some
top end player here. So do we think any of these guys could push Carlisle? Maybe? But
Jake, what are your thoughts on that?
Yeah, I just with me, I'm usually in the camp of just letting a young guy with upside
Give it a shot and see how it goes. So
Obviously a lubee I think can do some nice things
But I think they primarily like him as like the backup Mike and if they need to work Sam
Which almost isn't gonna exist in this defense. So hunter roller would probably be my best bet
You know throw him out there and just see what he can do.
Does he have the range that you're looking for?
I mean, a converted safety.
I think you're kind of planning on him being able to move well out in space
and kind of excel in coverage.
But other than that, I don't know if you bring in like some big time free agent,
but there's definitely guys out there that make you feel a little better. And I know you've got some names listed here. Yeah. So that was going to be the
next part of this is we do have a few, there are a few like linebacker names out there that can make
some sense for the Colts. CJ Mosley, I believe is still out there. I don't think he played terrible
football last year, certainly getting up there in age, but I don't think he played, you know,
terrible football in any means. He's been injured. Yeah. Kaiser White is a guy who has familiarity with Stikin.
He was in Philly at the same time Stikin was there,
has some past coverage in his background, played safety in college,
did not have a great year last year.
And there's a reason why he's still available.
But, you know, he's had some some history in the NFL.
Then Joanne Bentley as well was released by the Patriots.
I know he's more of like a thumper, like running chase type guy.
Yeah, but still getting another guy in there to compete.
So there are some free agents out there.
And then, there's the looming question
of what the heck's happening with Jermaine Pratt,
with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Look, the Cincinnati Bengals are a weird team.
They take forever to do anything in the NFL.
There's a reason why they waited 10 years to extend,
Higgins and
we don't know what's happening with Hendrickson. We don't know what's happening with Pratt
at this point. So we'll have to wait and see what is going on with on the Jermaine Pratt
front. But I do think if slash when Pratt is released this off season, the Colts feel
like a very destined place for him. You know, he's Luis Anarumo. Maybe it's not the best fit alongside Zaire Franklin,
but I do see just Pratt wanting to reunite with his old DC that he has a lot of respect for.
It could make a lot of sense for both sides there.
Yeah. There's definitely a fit and you could see why both sides would want to do it.
It does seem like it's inevitable for Cincinnati
because like they also drafted Demetrius Knight.
So it's like they have now got they've got Pratt's replacement.
So it's like, what are we doing?
Like, are you still trying to do a trade where you always set this on like this
way too high of a mark and then you're, know you're gonna have to release it. I don't
know what they're doing. But yeah I struggle a little bit to consider who plays where and where
all the snaps go if you bring in a Jermaine Pratt because it's very comparable to Zaire Franklin I
think in some of their strengths and weaknesses.
And then what does that do to Jalen Carlis, who they obviously really like?
And you know, the biggest reason I think they haven't made any drastic moves at linebacker
is because they are so reliant on Carlis taking this leap into being a full-time player for
them and doing it big. So yeah, I think they're kind of waiting for clarity on the Pratt situation before doing
anything else.
That linebacker is what I'm guessing.
Personally I wouldn't go that route, but I think that's kind of what they're waiting
for.
I think for me personally, I think I would just give like a low term deal to Kaiser White,
get him in here, just a veteran in in the room just to push Carlis.
So that way you still have competition for Carlis.
But Carlis is probably going to win that competition.
Yeah. Just so there's some insurance on the roster, you know.
But overall, like I'm concerned about linebacker because, again,
you're putting a lot of eggs in the Carlis basket when you haven't seen much.
But I do think Jaylen
Carlis is a pretty good player when he's been on the field. So
like in terms of my concern level, like it's maybe like a
five or six out of 10. We'll have to see I firmly believe if
Carlis stayed healthy last season, he would have overtaken
EJ Speed for that starting spot at linebacker by the end of the
year, it just he didn't stay healthy. So, you know, we're talking here about how it's hard
to give Carlisle a starting job,
but I am very optimistic about him.
It's just, again, it's a lot of,
it's not as optimistic, I guess, as the Colts,
as they are right now.
But I do think, you know, it's a fine bet to place.
It's just, I want a little bit more insurance on the roster.
So I would give Kaiser White a low term one year deal.
I would guess they're waiting on Pratt
to see what happens there to maybe bring him in.
But worst case scenario of Carlisle
ends up being the starter this year.
I don't think that's the worst thing.
I just hope he stays healthy.
And best case scenario, he turns out to be Kato June,
which I mean, very similar footsteps
coming into the league. And I mean, June is even coaching him now. So that's it for linebacker
guys. We're going to talk about safety here in a moment, because this one is just about
as much of a head scratcher. There is nothing like the atmosphere of an NBA playoff game,

All righty, locked on Colts every day
as we are back talking about the Colts'
biggest needs on the roster
and how they could potentially fill them.
The rest of this, obviously, we talked about linebacker to kick off this show. Now let's dive into the
safety position. Another position of the Colts kind of neglected in the draft, like just like
linebacker, they drafted a guy who could be a linebacker or safety and Hunter Waller. So
he kind of hurts this a little bit here by being both of those positions. But aside from Hunter
Waller, who we think is going to move to linebacker,
the Colts really didn't address this in the draft.
And unlike linebacker,
we feel good about the starters at safety.
Nick Cross had a breakout season last year,
did a lot of good things for this Colts team at strong safety.
And then they signed Cameron Bynum in the off season,
who by all accounts is going to be the starting free safety
for the next four to five years with this team.
Young ascending player this team really likes but behind those guys
We have a bunch of names that unless you're a Colts fan and you like religiously follow this team
Like most of you guys do you probably have no clue who these people are
I mean Ronnie Thomas played a little bit the last couple years
So you probably know Rodney Thomas, but then we got camp legend Daniel Scott, who, if he could ever make it to camp, I think he could be a good player.
But unfortunately, just had two major injuries in his career. And then the long term project,
Marcel Dabo, who I think is going on to year three with the team as the overseas like exception
player that the Colts have had, they've been developing for quite a long time now. So that's their safety room right now.
If the season were to start right now,
the Colts would be one bad bruise away
from putting one of those guys on the field.
And that scares me a lot
because safety is a very important position in this defense.
And I don't think you can afford to be this slim at safety.
So like when it comes to linebacker, if the Colts didn't
sign a veteran linebacker, I could live with it. I could talk myself into it. Special teams are
going to be good. I like Carlisle. If they don't sign a veteran safety, I'm nervous, Jake. I'm kind
of nervous going into the year. That's absolutely right. And it's, it's for all the same reasons
that I absolutely ripped them when the season ended
You went into it relying on julian blackman's health after giving him a low ball offer
You didn't really sign a direct backup for him
week one week two Uh, he injures his shoulder which I think he had to get surgery for after the season
Looks like a shell of himself because he can't really tackle anybody
for after the season looks like a shell of himself because he can't really tackle anybody. And the reason he had to play through it all and look that poor was because you didn't
have any backup for him. And here we are yet again, Nick cross and can bind them don't
have injury histories, but that can change at any moment. Like what are you going to
do if either of these guys goes down? You really only have outside across.
You only have free safeties on the roster.
So who, you know, if cross goes down, who you put in there, Wohler now, who
that's not where you drafted him for.
Really?
There's just no planet safety for the second year in a row.
And I'm like, what are we doing?
Like, this is something that bit you last year.
And like Chris
Ballard normally overcorrects, like I'm surprised they didn't get 10
safeties this offseason. They got one. Yeah, that's it.
Yeah, I will say at least with the safety market, similarly the last offseason
as well. It hasn't moved a ton. Like there are still some guys out there
like Chuck Clark has familiarity with the the secondary coaches here in Indy
Overlapped with the Ravens coach Chris Hewitt over in Baltimore for a little bit
So there's some familiarity there there obviously von Bell has the long history with Louie and Arumo
They're very close von Bell is an easy guy
They could bring in for a very cheap contract Jordan Jordan Whitehead, still 27 year old safety,
he's had some good seasons in the NFL.
So there are quite a few names still out there,
so I'm not gonna kill them completely yet.
They do definitely need to go get a safety though,
back here.
One more name I did wanna throw out there,
the Colts did it, signed undrafted free agent,
Trey Washington from Ole Miss.
You and I were talking him up yesterday on the show.
I went and watched a couple of his games from this past season,
and he's actually a pretty good player,
and I still agree that he's the second most likely
undrafted free agent to make the team.
It's just he's probably the backup nickel instead of a safety.
So, again, we're sticking with this same issue here.
So, again, I would lean, go get a Chuck Clark,
go get a Von Bell, maybe a Jordan Whitehead. I think those would make the most sense there.
But I don't know, like outside of doing that, I just don't know what your
solution here is. Like you can't really hope on some big jump from Dabo or
Daniel Scott or Rodney Thomas. We got a question here in the comment section,
like what are the chances of moving Juju or Jones or Womack to safety? I mean, as of right now, it can't be that much worse
than what they currently have back there. I do think that would be a pretty big jump.
And I don't think they could really do that. But is it much worse? I mean, look, if Daniel
Scott can even make it through camp, maybe he can be a good player. But like, it's in
the Jelani Woods and Juju Brent's camp right now where it's like he needs to make it through camp. So I think
this is very much a position where the Colts need to go grab a Chuck Clark, go grab a Vaughn Bell.
I'm not saying these guys are world beaters. They're not some star players like, you know,
or anything like that, but they're better than what they currently have on the roster at backup
safety. So this is not a position that I would let it play out
in camp because we know what Daniel Scott is,
we know what Rodney Thomas is,
we know what Marcel Dabo is.
Go get a Chuck Clark who can be a perfectly adequate
third safety and just solidify that depth a little bit.
I do think that veteran minimum kind of deal
is the best path to go. We've seen it work for them a few times now. Mike Adams, I mean, that veteran minimum kind of deal is the best path to go.
And we've seen it work for them a few times now.
Mike Adams, I mean, that was under the Gregson regime, but Rodney McLeod,
Mike Mitchell, it can work getting the very cheap veteran in there to provide some depth.
None of them were really brought in to be the guy.
Mitchell was in season.
I think Mike Adams was very late in the off season and
McLeod I think was maybe a little later in the off season as well. So yeah, it's getting
to be about that time where you bring in a guy like that. And I don't think I mean, again,
they entered the draft needing to fill out 21 roster spots. I don't really think you
and I are considering that it's all just going to be rookies. I mean, it could be it's a
new defensive coordinator, whatever. But it makes sense to bring in one or two
veterans at least and safety is definitely the one that is most begging
for it. So yeah, Chuck Hart makes a lot of sense. Von Bell obviously being able to be
that veteran communicator for Lou Anna Rummo, the coach on the field. You've got
Jordan Whitehead on here as well,
has had some standout seasons with the Jets
and the Buccaneers.
That's a guy from the safety position
that can take the ball away as well,
which Anarumo has been saying anytime he's really spoken
over the off season that, you know, that's a priority.
You gotta have a guy back there that can take it away.
And so I'd have to look again, because they're, they may be even looking at more obscure options,
like Robbie McClough was not really a guy we were thinking of back in the day.
But yeah, those are three good options, I think.
Yeah. And to throw a little extra part on that, you know, the Col Colts had that big lull of not signing any free agents
like most teams did after the first and second wave
of free agency.
Now that the comp pick window is closed
and the Colts have those two seventh round picks
likely coming next off season,
now they can feel like they can actually
get back into free agency.
So I'm not saying that's why they weren't signing anybody,
but I'm sure it factors in because if you give Chuck Clark a one-year, you know, one and a half million dollar contract, for instance,
they could have lost one of those comp picks that they were going to get for Joe Flacco
and for E.J. Speed. So now they are open to maybe making some of those moves. And again,
I think this should be one of the top priorities going forward. One thing we didn't mention,
I will say it real quick,
Julian Blackman is still out there.
He's still on the market,
so the Colts could bring him in to be the third safety,
but I think Jake and I are in full agreement.
That's very unlikely at this point.
I think both sides needed a clean break,
and I expect Blackman to land
with another team this offseason.
But coming up guys,
we have one more position to talk about,
and that is on the offensive line, right guard.
We know, we kind of know who the starter is going to be, but how good should we feel about
that starting position and the depth behind him?

biggest needs on the roster and how they can still address them this off season. All right. All right. All right.

All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. kind of given the indication all season by Ballard and Steichen that they viewed Matt Consalves more as an offensive tackle. So when they drafted Jalen Travis, who is also an offensive
tackle, we were like, okay, who's going to play guard? But some of the indications since then
have been that Consalves could move inside to play right guard. And it seems like that's the most
likely option for the team. So with Consalves moving to right guard, I do think this need does drop a little bit,
but it's still certainly a need for this team. I mean, Gonsalves is a third round pick from last
year's draft, played almost exclusively at offensive tackle last year. I think it was exactly one snap
at guard last season, Jake. He came in for Quinton Nelson for one snap and then Quinton Nelson came
back on the field and that was it for Gonsalves at guard. But I do think the Colts viewed him more as a guard in
the pre-jab process. It's just when they got into camp they realized that his
best path to playing was at offensive tackle and those things kind of happened.
So I'm curious to see what he's gonna look like at guard. I feel good starting
him. I think he could be a very good guard. At tackle last year he was at
his best when he was pulling out front, getting on the move and doing things that a guard typically does but playing a tackle.
So I feel good about him, but the Colts could certainly add there and get better. Brandon
Sheriff is out in the open market. Will Hernandez is on the open market. Those are guys who
have started for a long time and been pretty good guards. So it really comes down to if
the Colts want to raise their floor here,
they could go get a Brandon Sheriff
and just raise that floor
and likely be a better team this year.
But it does hinder a young player
that they really do have a lot of faith in.
So what's your take on that, Jake?
Would you go get a Sheriff or Hernandez?
Or would you just throw Gonzales out there
and maybe add like a low end veteran backup,
but probably just roll with Gonzales out there and maybe add like a low end veteran backup, but probably just just roll with Gonzales.
Yeah, all I'm really looking for is just the security, not necessarily like a definite starter like a Hernandez or a Sheriff.
You mentioned Jack Driscoll on here who is plenty of experience and is like a spot starter in his career.
So I think that's probably the right way to do it
because I'm very pro, let your young guys
like Matt Gonzalez play.
And when you, so getting Travis allows for Gonzalez
to move inside, but then that's like the only piece
that you have that allows that, if that makes sense.
So if you wanna add more right guard behind them to like add more security,
add more depth or right tackle, even like whatever you want to do,
you can bring in more to just make it so guys,
the best five can play, you know, and you don't have to worry about, okay,
well, Gonzales can go over here and play right guard.
But well, now Jalen Travis gets her or Braden Smith gets her.
And now you he's one more injury away from having to get moved out again.
I don't love their options in there.
I mean, Antonio Mafia is one.
I think he was active like a game or two.
Dalton Tucker. I mean, you've got to imagine he's going to take
at least some sort of subtle
step forward.
I mean, to no
fault of his own, things kind of
went crash landing last
year. Like he started out nicely when
he was replacing Wolfries, but
he was a rookie, undrafted free
agent.
It was not always going to go
super well, so they had to
replace him.
You know, you could even bring back like Mark Gowinski.
I don't think there's an indication if you bring back once
that he asked to start, but he's a guy who has started for you for that coaching staff
and next to the guys he's going to be playing with.
So that's that's another one.
Just you don't have to have some sort of big needle mover,
just a guy who has been there and done that is really all I'd do.
Yeah, I think that's where I'm at when it comes to right guard and what to do with this
need on the roster.
Again, I was nervous post draft because I didn't know how they felt about Gonzales moving in,
even though personally when watching Gonzales play tackle last year, I kind of wanted him
more at right guard.
But they certainly just couldn't do that because they didn't have another tackle on the
roster to play when Brandon Smith left the team for his OCD thing. I kind of wanted him more at right guard, but they certainly just couldn't do that because they didn't have another tackle on the roster
to play when Braden Smith left the team for his OCD thing. So
I do think Gonzalves is going to make a good right guard. I'm happy with giving him the keys going into the off season
and if I made any move here, I would grab a Driscoll type or Mark Lewinsky type. Guys who can be backups and have been backups before and won't
cost very much money, have them be that depth player.
And then if something happens, like you still feel okay with those guys going out there.
Like Lewinsky was not great by any means last season down the stretch, but he was better
than awful, you know?
And that's the bar we're looking for as a backup player.
Better than awful.
Right. As a street free agent coming in,
I'm glad with you being better than awful down the stretch.
But I think that's where I'm at with the guard position.
Yes, if we're talking Brandon Sheriff in his prime, awesome.
Yeah, go get Brandon Sheriff in his prime.
Commanders.
But he's not Brandon Sheriff in his prime right now.
As of right now, he is kind of a plotting good pass protector if you run blocker.
He can get a little punch in there, but he's going to limit the run game a little bit because
he's not that level of athlete the Colts are looking for.
Same with Will Hernandez.
I think he's a good guard when he's healthy, but he's getting up there in age coming off
a major injury that I think he just had surgery for.
And he doesn't really move the way the Colts like their guards to move in this system.
So if you get a Driscoll or a Golinski, you get guys who are capable of the athleticism needed in this system.
I think Driscoll even played under Steichen for a minute out there in Philly.
Yeah.
Yeah, so they can kind of do the things asked of them, and you're also letting Consolales, a young player that you spent a top 100 pick on, be a starter.
There is this difference when it comes to putting all
this faith into Jalen Carlis, right?
Who was a fifth round pick, safety linebacker
who only played six games last year due to injury,
putting all that faith in him being a starter.
There's a difference in that, in putting your faith
in Gonzales who started, you know,
what, like 600 snaps
last year playing both tackle positions. You spent a top 100 pick on this player. And like this is,
you spent a lot of like a good bit of capital on this guy. You moved up for him in the third round.
So like there's, there's an understandable reason to put faith in that player over like the car lies.
So yeah, I'm, I'm all for giving Consolidated Keys at right guard.
I think he can be really good at it.
And if you're going to do anything there,
maybe add like a Jack Driscoll.
Yeah, because they've got some modest guys there,
like Danny Pinter, who really is only insurance for center.
We've seen that movie before, Right Guard.
Wesley French, I think they're a little more
willing to move around to the guard spots.
But I mean, he spent all last year being injured.
So there's that.
I will say I know there's probably some people out there mentioning quarterback because every
time I discuss the Colts needs quarterback always comes up whether it's the comment section,
Twitter, whatever.
I mean, the Colts need a quarterback until one emerges.
But we know the guys on the roster are the ones they are choosing from. You know what I mean, the Colts need a quarterback until one emerges, but we know the guys on the roster are the ones they are choosing from.
You know what I mean?
Who's this good quarterback they're going to go grab in May?
Is it right?
Well, even if there was, they wouldn't be interested because they have the two guys they're planning to have compete to be the starter.
So like it's a need until somebody emerges, but everyone they're going to have compete
is already on the roster.
So that's why we don't really consider it a need.
Like in grand scheme.
We're looking at feasible needs right now.
Yeah, like things that are actually
going to be addressed, yeah.
Yes.
So yeah, yeah, comment section, Darren's saying,
our comment section, they haven't even
talked about quarterback.
Our comment section's really good. Exactly, yeah. That section, Darren's saying in our comment section, they haven't even talked about quarterback. Our comment section is really good.
Exactly.
Yeah.
That's the reason why guys, like we acknowledge that like, yes, there needs to be a quarterback
that steps up, but they're not going to address it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Our comment section is great.
These guys have not talked about quarterback whatsoever.
Darren's completely right.
Don't gaslight them.
Don't lump them in with other people talking quarterback. We love
our comment section here on YouTube. We do appreciate you guys tuning in to today's episode
of Lockdown Colts. That is what we have for the needs. There are more needs on this roster,
I'm sure. Backup Nickel. If Washington isn't the guy they trust there, then they would need a
backup nickel as well. There are some other positions on this team, but we'll have the rest
of the offseason to
talk about those ones here.
