Starting point is 00:00:00 The Colts were aggressive in 2025 about adding players. They had some hits. They had some misses. But they also had some who just weren't around enough for us to be able to tell. We're going to dive into all of it right now. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. All right.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Welcome to Locked on Colts part of the Locked On podcast network. now the number one sports podcast network out there. Today's episode is sponsored by Price Picks. Download the Price Picks app today and use code locked on NFL to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. What is up, friends and family? This is Jake Arthur, Indianapolis Colts beat writer for Roundtable Sports. And today we are kind of, we're continuing our mix of reviewing the season and previewing the offseason. And yesterday, Zach reviewed the rookie class with you guys.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Today, I'm going to go over some of the primarily free agency, but some of the key moves that the Colts made throughout the year because whether you're happy with how the Colts approach the offseason and player acquisition, everything, or dissatisfied, I think we all can agree it was more aggressive than it's really ever been in Chris Ballard's nine years. It went from free agency. It carried through training camp whenever guys went down into the season.
Starting point is 00:01:40 And it went up to the trade deadline. And it was a very interesting and captivating year to be someone who digested the Colts, essentially, whether you're a fan, media member, what have you. They pretty much had us on our toes at all times. So we're going to go over some of the moves that really worked. some of the moves that maybe didn't work so well or guys who, you know, maybe it was a mixed bag. We didn't see enough from them. And then some of these guys are actually back potentially on the open market again as for agents this offseason. So we're going to go ahead and start out with what worked.
Starting point is 00:02:17 And we've got to start out with Daniel Jones, right? So the quarterback position is obviously the most important on a football field, let alone perhaps sports. And Jones really was a pleasant surprise. obviously here on this show, we weren't huge fans of it. We thought, you know, obviously this was a quarterback who just felt a little bit like damaged goods and that, you know, his high end was maybe something we already saw in 2022, which still wasn't very, it wasn't all that statistically productive and it was really reliant on him running the ball. But Jones came in. He was exactly what Shane Steichen wanted from a mental aspect. And physically, he got rid of the ball quickly and everything.
Starting point is 00:03:07 It kind of started with the whole camp battle of it all with Anthony Richardson, which you saw us, you know, I was there every day throughout the spring and summer. It kind of went back and forth. But as far as physically impressing, it was mostly a wash with a slight nod to Anthony Richardson, given the fact there was probably more big plays birthed by him. But then when the season started, they flipped the switch. And kind of the snooze fest that we saw in the summer, that was not at all what Daniel Jones orchestrated throughout the year. He had his best win percentage in the season, led the Colts to an 8 and 5 record before an Achilles tear ended his season.
Starting point is 00:03:49 and he had he was either already met career bests in pretty much every statistical category as far as passing goes or was on pace to do it. So we saw a clear positive marriage between Daniel Jones and Shane Steichen that not only led to success for Jones, but for the Colts offense in general. The Colts were a buzzsaw in the first half of the season against crappy teams, middling teams, good teams. They put up nearly 500 yards. of offense against a Denver Broncos defense that is really, really good.
Starting point is 00:04:24 And, you know, they were productive against the Rams. You know, they just had some really, really positive moments. And then whether you want to pin it on Daniel Jones getting injured with his fibula and then the wheels kind of falling off the thing or what have you, just something organizationally, it all kind of fell apart around the midway point. their last win was against the Falcons right before the buy. And then, of course, they go from 8 and 2 to a 7-game skid, falling to 8-9 on the season and missing the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:04:58 So largely, we're going to say Daniel Jones, that absolutely worked out. I don't think that looks the same if it's Anthony Richardson. But with Jones, certainly he showed enough to where it feels like a foregone conclusion that he is your quarterback again in 2026, even despite the Achilles injury, which the Colts don't seem to be really concerned about. One of their other big ones was safety Cam Bynum, signed him to a big healthy contract. He had a career high in interceptions with four as well as tackles for loss with three. Now, Lou Anirumo, before three agencies started, he didn't speak a lot, but he did say that, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:38 they want someone from that safety position who can be kind of a captain of the field, can take the ball away, is rangy and smart. And I think he pretty much found his Jesse Bates that he had in Cincinnati. Bynum is a really smart and instinctive player, a great leader. He's obviously known for being a little jovial and has all the celebrations and everything. But throughout the week, he is very much a vocal leader. And he also leads by example as well. He is a sponge who always wants to go over the game plan and know everything from Lou Aniromo.
Starting point is 00:06:12 So I think I think that one was a home. run. The Colts really haven't had that productivity from a deep safety in quite some time. Jermaine Pratt was one that we all, we all telestrated back in January, February, when it was revealed that he wanted out from the Bengals. All offseason, nothing happens, even though the Colts needed something to happen at linebacker. He gets released after the draft from the Bengals replace him. He signs with the Raiders. It does not work out with the Raiders. And then, ultimately he finally finds his way to the Colts, plays the final 12 games of the season with the Colts.
Starting point is 00:06:51 And for my money, was their best linebacker. Very productive, very instinctive, probably better tackler than Zeyer Franklin showed to be. He had three takeaways from the linebacker position, a couple of fumble recoveries in an interception. I think he was, if I'm not mistaken, the only linebacker to register a takeaway, which is pretty impressive considering
Starting point is 00:07:14 you know, they have linebackers all over the field all the time. It was primarily Pratt and Zaire Franklin. But that's an area of Franklin really excelled in the year before. But Pratt is a guy who is now going to be hitting free agency again, but he's 29, and this team wants to get younger and faster, so we'll certainly see how that goes. Mackay Blackman, I'm going to put that one as a win as well. Colts giving up a six-round pick to the Vikings in exchange for him. Now, Blackman wasn't a star, but he was, he had a,
Starting point is 00:07:44 a torn ACL for the Vikings last year. So this was his first year coming back from that. It was already kind of an undersized player and was really forced into action after Justin Wally goes down. Trevorius Ward misses a bunch of time. You know, the Colts were just riddled with injuries at the cornerback position, obviously. And Blackman was a guy who they needed desperately to step up.
Starting point is 00:08:08 And I never really felt like he was a big problem. There were two weeks in a row where he fell down in coverage and gave up huge plays. That was ridiculous. But like as far as, you know, man on man being in coverage, I felt like he was pretty good. If you take away those two big gaps, then his season was pretty, pretty good if you ask me. Now, going into next year, if he's like your fourth corner, fourth or fifth corner, you're in an excellent position rather than him essentially being like your second or third corner all season long. Next guy on my list, Neville Gallimore. Now, this guy is a veteran.
Starting point is 00:08:46 I believe this was his third contract that he's had in the NFL, but he had career highs and everything. I played all 17 games, I think four sacks, and he had more TFLs and tackles than he's ever had in his career. This is a guy, again, free agent. I would absolutely bring him back. This next guy, very pleasant surprise, running back Amir Abdullah.
Starting point is 00:09:09 This was his 11th year in the league. He's bounced around pretty much everywhere. primarily running back that catches the ball, but he's also been a return specialist. This really, you could say, was his best year returning kickoffs in his 11 years for the Colts. His average of 29.6, not quite his best, but the only other season where he had his best, he had way fewer returns. So Abdullah was a huge spark for the Colts. and I feel like other than a fumble he had late in the season that kind of put him in the doghouse, he was able to spark so many big kickoff returns that gave the Colts momentum and allowed them to score points when their offense desperately needed to do so.
Starting point is 00:09:54 So Abdullah was a huge addition, I think. Between him and Ashton Doolin, I think the Colts kickoff return game was outstanding. This next pair, kickers Spencer Schrader and Blake Groupie. So Schrader, through the first four games, won AFC Special Teams player the month for the first month of the season, basically shredded his knee after week five. Just a terrible situation for him against the Raiders. They go to block, I think it was an extra point and collapse into his knee.
Starting point is 00:10:27 His season's over. They get Michael Badgley, who we'll talk about in a little bit, not great, but then ultimately they land on Blake Groupie to kind of save. the way and finish off the season. Now, between Schrader and Groupie, these guys went 24 of 25 on field goals. They only missed one field goal the whole year and no extra points, 24 of 24. So the kicking game was about as good as it can get if you just remove the Michael Badgely segment of it all.
Starting point is 00:10:58 And then Ashton Doolin, that's someone they re-signed in the offseason. And if you take out his stint on IR with the hamstring injury, I think you're look at an at an all pro year from Ashton Doolin without question. This was, I think, his best season. As a special teamer, outstanding. A gunner on the punt team was always right there. One of the first ones, if not the first one, to the punt returner all the time. You saw him there on kickoff coverage. As a kickoff returner, awesome, awesome players sparked so many. This was his most productive year as a kick returner. That's the highest volume of returns he's ever had in his season. offensively he was used in a lot of gadgety ways and it was really productive got a lot of
Starting point is 00:11:41 productive runs and like jet sweeps and things like that so this was a big one from from dulin you got he he's kind of a lifetime contract kind of guy for me you just keep reupping him for one or two years at a time until one of the one of the side says no more but dulin is the consummate colton i think someone who he's not necessarily like a household name or a star but you got to have you got to have a roster chock full of a bunch of Ashton-do-ins if you're going to be successful. All right, guys, so that is a big group of 2025 season moves that I felt was successful. Those ones went well. Now we're going to kind of flip the coin over a little bit in our next segment and talk about
Starting point is 00:12:24 guys where the Colts absolutely whiffed on these moves or we just didn't see enough from these players to be able to even gauge whether they were successful or not. Starting point is 00:16:27 Go check out the link, which is in our show notes right after this. All right, guys. So let's talk about some of the moves that maybe whiffed or we didn't really see enough to make a good judgment on him. So we started at quarterback at the top with Daniel Jones. Now, let's move to Phillip Rivers. So this one, I feel like he's going to be kind of enigmatic for some people.
Starting point is 00:16:49 So as a starting quarterback, he goes 0 for three after being pulled off the coaching sidelines of high school football, hasn't played in the NFL since 2020 when he was the last quarterback to lead the Colts to the playoffs. but despite going 0 and 3 in the final four games, I felt like he gave the Colts a fighting chance. So Seattle, they clearly had to come up with kind of a half-court game plan. You know what I mean? Lots of shorter stuff, you know, tried to establish the run.
Starting point is 00:17:18 And they really had Seattle where they wanted them. They had control of the game in the final minute, and the defense just did not finish the game. Seattle marches right down and gets the game. winning field goal. So right out of the gate, they almost started 1-0 with Phillip Rivers in a tough matchup on the road in Seattle against a team like the Seahawks that could get to the Super Bowl this year.
Starting point is 00:17:42 There's no reason why they couldn't. And then, of course, the 49ers game, we saw them open things up a lot. He started to push the ball downfield a lot, and he definitely looked the best that he had in this stretch. And then there, of course, I think it was, was it Houston or Jacksonville, was his third and final game. That one, that one wasn't great. He himself admitted that was just his worst performance. But overall, I thought his three game stretch was overall positive. But with that being said, we just didn't see enough of that to whether, say, whether it was a successful
Starting point is 00:18:20 standard or not. Now, they signed him exclusively to get them to the playoffs. They had four games left, and they needed to try and went out to get in. He was 0 and 3, so from that perspective, it failed. But just him starting three games, it wasn't really enough for us to really give a great evaluation of it. Now, that was one swing for the fences moment the Colts had this year. Their other one was under totally different circumstances. It's when at the trade deadline, they traded two first round picks and A.D. Mitchell to the Jets
Starting point is 00:18:56 for former all-pro cornerback sauce Gardner. Now, Gardner, what he was able to do immediately right out of the gate for the Colts, very impressive. So he'd already played an international game for the Jets recently coming into when he was traded to the Colts. He gets traded. I think it was on Tuesday. Comes to the Colts is in the building for like three days before they have to jet off for Germany. For his second international game, he plays the entire game, which is an overtime. game. They have the buy week and then they go back on the road the next week against the
Starting point is 00:19:31 chiefs, which is another overtime game. So the guy gets traded and then a few days later has to go to Germany, plays a whole overtime game and then two weeks later in his next game, back on the road, full overtime game again. And that's when things kind of started to go awry. He suffers a calf injury, which initially I think we all feared it was an Achilles. It was not contact came up lame with his lower, I think, left leg. And of course, we're like, yeah, it has to be the Achilles. Why would it not be? But luckily, they dodged a bullet and it was a cap strain. He was able to come back for, I think, two games, one game, to end the season. And he didn't make it through the whole game. So ultimately, he played two full games for the
Starting point is 00:20:22 Colts out of eight. I think he was officially credited with four games with the Colts, but those were injury-abridged game. So the Colts made this move because they had their sights set on a deep playoff run in the Super Bowl, either this year or next year. And so they went for it. They swung for the fences. You know, you get an elite corner to pair with Charverius Ward, who was eventually going to come back from his concussions, and then, you know, your gravy from there. The next guy we're going to mention is Charverius Ward Sr. Now, he was able to appear in just seven of 17 games because he was on injured reserve twice with concussions.
Starting point is 00:21:03 So obviously not what the Colts were shooting for when they signed him. On paper, you got Soss Gardner, you got Mooney Ward. It's supposed to be excellent. No one's going to be able to complete a pass against you. But they got just essentially nine games out of the two guys. bind. So that is just not how you want it, obviously, from an injury perspective, of course, it failed. From Ward's perspective, he might retire. It feels like he's got a foot out of the door from what he's saying he's seriously considering retirement. He'll let the Colts know as soon
Starting point is 00:21:40 as possible what his intentions are. But on the field, when the Colts did have them, if you're looking at pro football focus his grades, they had Sauce and Mooney as the team's top two graded defensive backs overall. They both allowed less than 60% completions when targeted, and they both had a passer rating allowed of below 90 when targeted. So they were pretty successful when they were actually on the field, but the fact they were injured a bunch kind of took away from that whole thing. One corner that was not successful was Xavier and Howard. Now, that is when the Colts suffered a bunch of injuries in the cornerback room and they had to be thrown a lifeline. Exxavian Howard briefly worked with Lou Aniromo for a couple years in Miami
Starting point is 00:22:27 years ago, and it was a failed experiment. He was targeted 22 times. I think it was through the first four weeks, gave up a pass rating 139.2. He was a disaster. I think with A.D. Mitchell's stuff against the Rams combined with the Xavier Howard stuff against the Rams, Those are the two biggest factors that led to that loss. Some of the quick ones here, Joe Botchy, the linebacker. So the Colts clearly had very little at linebacker, and they tried to patchwork it and give Lou Aniromo some help. They gave him Joe Bachi, who he had been working with in Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Bachi was great in the summer, but then when it got to the season, not so much, had missed a bunch of tackles. And his final game, he had two costly penalties, one that wiped out, I think, an Ashton-Dulin kickoff return touchdown, and then another one that was tripping against Ashton Genty. It was just an ugly game. That was his final game with the Colts. Khalil Herbert and Corey Ballantyne, that's a couple of guys.
Starting point is 00:23:30 The Colts signed in for agency didn't make it to the regular season. So they did not even really make the roster. And then Michael Badgley, that we mentioned earlier, three missed extra points in seven games. The Colts had almost spotless kicking throughout the year. from Spencer Schrader and Blake Groupie, but they had that big Michael Badgley blackmark in the middle of the season that really affected things.
Starting point is 00:23:54 And his final game with him, you could say contributed to them losing one of those games. It was that weird one where the extra point, the Texans, did they make it, did they not? And then, of course, Badgley's doink, of course, did not make it. So Badgley then would go on, I think with the bills, missed more extra points get cut again. So yeah, not a great season for Boucher with his time with the Colts or anyone else for that matter.
Starting point is 00:24:23 All right, guys. So some of these free agents that we have discussed today are going to be hitting the free agent market potentially again. So we need to discuss whether or not the Colts need to bring some of these guys back. As the new year gets going, a lot of people are trying to simplify their routines. All right, welcome back every day, so we are going over some of the most significant moves that the Colts made throughout the offseason, going into the season. Very active for them, very aggressive at all points of the calendar year, essentially. So we went over, you know, the good, we went over the bad and kind of the undecided, some guys that didn't really appear long enough. And now some of these guys are up for grabs again potentially. So Daniel Jones, he signed a one-year deal with the Colts in the offseason to come in and battling Anthony Richardson, see how it goes, yada yada.
Starting point is 00:28:06 He wins, gets the Colts to essentially a historic start to their year, and then a fibula injury and Achilles injury crushes everything. his season. So everything coming out of Coltsville essentially has them very confident he's their quarterback in 2026. There's mutual interest there. Daniel Jones wants to be back working with Shane Steichen. The Colts want Jones back to continue building on what they had going last year. And as, I mean, as long as nothing weird comes up where like an outside team blows Jones representation away with an offer. I think Jones will be back here. I think he knows it's probably what's best for for him. This was the best he's ever looked in his career. And for the Colts, they should be desperate as well because the options out there are quarterback outside of Jones. If he wasn't an
Starting point is 00:29:00 option, not great. So the Colts are probably going to do whatever it takes to make that one work. Next up, Jermaine Pratt. So this one, this is kind of a thanks for all you've done, but we're probably ready to move on type of situation. So at 29 years old, you know, speed athleticism has never been his thing, but he is smart. He's a tough tackler. He's had periods throughout his career where he's not so much of his sure tackler. His coverage has waned in his more recent years as well. But he was the Colts best linebacker this year, I think.
Starting point is 00:29:39 I think he did really well at hitting the hole and really disrupting running lanes. the Colts had a really good run defense this year, and Pratt was a big part of it. But they want to get younger. They want to get faster. So not only Jermaine Pratt, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have a whole new starting lineup at linebacker this year,
Starting point is 00:29:58 you know, over the next couple of years, if they decide to get out of the Desire of Franklin contract, they will save nearly $15 million, or they'll create nearly $15 million in cap savings over the next two years. So Pratt, while his, his matchup with Lou Anirumo wound up being successful like we all kind of hoped it might be when we started talking about it this time last year essentially, probably a one-year type of situation. Neville Gallimore is the next one up. This one I would almost not even consider
Starting point is 00:30:32 not doing it unless he hits the open market and other teams just throw a ton of money at him. Now, if you can get interior pass rush and you don't have to give like premium money for it, like you don't have to pay a guy to be the starter, then that could be pretty tough because the Colts, Gallimore's not going to be their starter unless something happens where they get themselves out of the Grover-Stewart contract and they decide they want to resign Gallimor to be their new starting nose tackle alongside DeForest Buckner. I don't know, but another team may like what Gallimore gave the Colts and sign him to a pretty handsome deal beyond what the Colts who want to do for his role, if that makes sense. They don't want to overpay for a guy who's going to be their third interior player essential is what I'm getting at.
Starting point is 00:31:26 But DeForest Buckner, 32 years old, coming off a neck surgery. Grover Stewart, 32 years old. I mean, there's nothing wrong with him, but we've talked about his contract being something. you might want to take a look at. We've talked about that recently. So the third defensive tackle spot, I think, is going to be critical for the Colts. Don't even mess with it. Bring Neville Gallimore back.
Starting point is 00:31:50 Again, I mentioned this is a guy who a veteran player. He's been in the league several years, but just had the best season of his career as the third defensive tackle for you, for the Colts. Don't mess with it. Bring the guy back. And this is a team that is going to need all the defensive line. firepower they can get. Bring one of your best players back. I mean, it's, it's not rocket science. There's plenty of guys on there that didn't do much this season that you can let go or cut
Starting point is 00:32:19 or trade. Gallimore was not one of those guys. Bring him back. And then the last one here, Blake Groupie. This one's interesting because Spencer Schrader's knee, we don't know what the timeline of that is. Will he be ready for training camp, the start of the regular season? I don't know. We'll wait and see. But Groupie is an exclusive rights free agent, which essentially means he's got no options. If the Colts offer him something, he's got to take it. Or, you know, that's really his only option.
Starting point is 00:32:50 He only becomes a true free agent if the Colts declined to give him a contract offer. So I think for the Colts, it would be wise to hang on to Groupie until they know what Schrader is going to look like. very possible that Schrader starts the season on Pup, on physically unable to perform, and then they need a guy like Groupie to come in and carry them until Schrader's back. Or shoot, maybe Schrader just doesn't look the same upon returning. Or, you know, when he starts practicing again, they can tell that it's just not right. Well, you have a guy in Blake Groupie here who was essentially perfect for you in limited action last year. So Jones, bring him back.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Pratt, probably not. Thank you for what you did, but it's probably best part ways. Gallimore and Groupie, bring those guys back for sure.
