But this summer, FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or bonus daily. That's right. There's something for everyone every day all summer long. Visit FanDuel.com to get started. That's right. There's something for everyone every day, all summer long. Visit FanDuel.com to get started. Hello, everyone. I am Zach Hicks, your favorite film nerd over at HorseshoeHuddle.com. And I'm joined, as always, by Jake Arthur, the boots on the ground for HorseshoeHuddle.com, who is there at training camp and giving us our lowdown, our daily lowdown
Starting point is 00:01:02 on everything that happened in practice today. And look, if you guys want to become an insider just like Jake, become just that locked-on Colts insider that you really want to be, and chat with us directly and get that inside scoop, follow the link in our show notes. But Jake is here. We're going to talk about some injury updates. You know, guys who mispractice, obviously give you that update on Anthony Richardson, obviously in that first segment. Then we're going to talk offense and defense but Jake to start us off here before we get into the Anthony Richardson breakdown who mispracticed today because it looks like a pretty long list
Starting point is 00:01:34 from what I'm seeing and you know I'm sure that some of this was precautionary you know like what we see with training camp is if a guy has like a scratch on his foot he's going to be out for a couple days with that scratch on his foot you know so I'm not allowed to speculate on injuries anymore because I'm 0 for 1 so far this all season but what can you tell us at least about uh about these injuries and guys who mispracticed today yeah definitely not uncommon following the first padded practice uh but the the list is getting a little bigger uh so Dio Dengbo has been out for really like three and a half practices now. He's got that calf injury. The good news is I saw him and
Starting point is 00:02:10 another group of players come out at the end of practice, and he didn't look like he had a limp or anything. Amir Speed has been out for a couple days now, which that doesn't seem like a big deal, but he had strung together a good couple practices, and I was intrigued to see more of him. I don't know what that injury is, though. Will Mallory, I feel like Joel said it might have been a hip or something. It might be a hip. Hamstring. Yep.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Yeah, so Will Mallory, first day. He's been out. Jalen Carlize. Maybe he was the hip. I think he was the hip. So I think it was Carlize was the hip. Mallory was the hamstring. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, so Carlize was out he was the hit. I think he was the hit. So I think it was Carlize was the hit. Mallory was the hamstring. Yeah, that's it. Yeah. So Carlize was out for the first time. Obviously, Titus Leo and Samson Ebicom. Ebicom not been put on IR yet. And maybe it's not so
Starting point is 00:02:56 bad with Titus Leo. So we'll see on that. Obviously, the injured list guys, Raekwon Davis and Chris Lamans, they remain out as out as well yeah we got to keep holding our breath when it comes to the Titus Leo update obviously it didn't look good uh the other day but you never know especially though when a guy gets carded off and they say it's a knee injury it's like well we'll see what happened there but yeah if you call them I'm shocked they haven't put them on IR yet maybe they're trying to get a second opinion on it uh but look at that injury list man look at that injury list the Will Mallory one uh definitely stands out a little bit because I remember Chris Ballard did call that out in his um post-season press conference the one right after
Starting point is 00:03:33 the final game uh said that like Will Mallory they liked what they saw but he needs to stay healthy and yeah you know another missed training camp practice is just not great for his his odds and making the making the team this year. But we'll see. Obviously, we'll see if this becomes something like a Jelani Woods thing where it's a whole training camp or just a couple of days and we'll have to monitor all these guys here. But let's get to the Anthony Richardson breakdown,
Starting point is 00:03:57 what we saw from our young promising quarterback. It looked like a little bit of, I don't want to say like jitters or anything, but inconsistencies early in today's practice. And then he started to really get going later in the day. Does that kind of match up with what you saw? Yeah, he definitely started out slow during each session, whether it was routes on air, 11 on 11s. He started out a little slow on each of those, which hasn't been the case throughout camp, but he definitely settled in wound up finishing seven of 12.
Starting point is 00:04:29 I thought his deep ball, especially look perfect. Like he was, he was dropping in buckets. Now that's not to say all of them were completed. There were some drops. There was, there's a chicken flapping its wings and everything.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Very close to me. There we go. Stand by. I am not kidding. So, yeah, that was perfect, wasn't it? Yeah, so the deep ball was looking really good. Again. Hey! So Pittman had three catches today.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Josh Downs had a couple. Yeah. Decent day spreading the ball around again. This is just great radio. That's enough. Look, you guys, look, we get the live on location, Jake Arthur. So this is what we get with it with the Colts training camp being on a farm. But yes, let me complete what Jake is saying there while the chicken calms down in the background. It looks like the deep ball was doing some good things for Richardson, completing some passes,
Starting point is 00:05:32 the downs, and Michael Pittman Jr. And look, going 7 of 12, when you start a little slow, you can't really complain about that at all. And it looks like the Colts offense, and I'll try to kick it back to you, Jake. We'll see if the chicken lets you talk here. But it looks like the offense did a lot of variety today, which we haven't seen a ton of that so far in training camp where, you know, they've done a lot of low red and high red and a lot of like
Starting point is 00:05:56 two minute drill type stuff. But it looks like from what you put in the notes here, they did first, second, third downs and low red today and trying to get that variety with the offense going. Yeah, the first 11-on-11 session was low red zone again with like inside the five-yard line. Now the first day of practice, they worked in red zone. Thank you. They worked in red zone because they didn't want guys having to run absolutely everywhere. AR did start slow on this one like just
Starting point is 00:06:27 not super accurate on those little dump offs um so and there was a sack like buckner and tave and brian got together for a sack on that one but they have been doing a lot of first second third down stuff you know working in actual game situations he has settled into that pretty well they've done that i think three days consecutive three practices consecutively now. I'm just still, I'm not going to say blown away, but maybe a little surprised at how far downfield the ball keeps getting. Just in comparison to even the spring, like Richardson in practice historically has not been a guy that really stretches the field a ton. We know he does in games and everything, but something must have clicked or it's very intentional for them to get downfield. But, you know, he, he had a shot to Pittman that was about
Starting point is 00:07:17 40 yards downfield today that Pittman dropped pretty uncharacteristic for him. But, you know, Anthony Gould had one at one point. Pierce obviously had a nice chunk play as well. So Anthony's looking good. I mean, he's kind of on the run a lot because the defensive line is real good. And there's only so much the offensive line can kind of manhandle within a practice setting. But no, I think he's still doing well. They're putting him in a lot of different situations, obviously mixing up RPO with some more traditional stuff as well. Yeah, I'm waiting for more gadgety stuff to happen because we know that's going to be part of the offense at some point. But pretty normal base offense stuff is occurring right now, and so far it's pretty successful.
Starting point is 00:08:07 I know for the crowd that always says, but Anthony Richardson's completion percentage, they're going to be in shambles over the fact that he's been pretty accurate for the most part throughout camp, and his completion percentage is pretty good. See, now I need you to chart his average depth of target on top of that as well so we can put the completion percentage with an eight yards downfield depth of target on top of that as well so we can put the completion percentage with like you know an eight yards downfield depth of target like you really need to get out there and like measure each throw jake so we can have the advanced stats on these there is a lot of eyeballing and guessing that goes on with the depths of throws i'm out here
Starting point is 00:08:38 yeah yeah one one more thing i did want to ask about anthony and i know this is like a daily thing that we are again checking up on but so far throughout this camp, I mean, we're getting closer and closer to the halfway point of this training camp session. Compared to last year, though, does he just look like a different player out there? Like I know we get lost in the hyperbole sometimes of the best shape of his life and he's looking better than he ever has. But to you, just from the eyeball test from last year to this year, does he look like a different player this year? Does he look like he's taken that big step forward? I would say so. Last year, obviously, up until the week of the first preseason game, him and Gardner Minshew were rotating first and second team reps and everything. It's been his team the whole time. He's very used to everyone he's playing with he's used to how the guys in front of him block because again the line is the exact same as well so he looks a lot more
Starting point is 00:09:30 comfortable and everything looks a lot more like uh nfl quarterback basically like all just the routine stuff we've seen his mechanics are a little better the footwork is a little better i will say with that said there are some things things that Joe Flacco does that are just like, you see it and you're like, that's what a dozen year veteran does. Like Joel and I today were commenting on just the ball placement of like Flacco's screen passes and stuff. It's incredibly accurate and exactly where it needs to be. So you just see tiny examples of that of like Anthony can get there eventually but you know you you do see that 21 22 year old quarterback versus the 35 year old quarterback that's out there and it's it's not eye-opening in a bad way but it's just like Anthony's really good but there's
Starting point is 00:10:19 still some of this like you know kind of smaller stuff that he can still work toward yeah still ways to go for sure and we'll see uh anthony richardson's progress obviously throughout training camp but don't worry guys me jake and that jake and we'll be back with you guys after the after this quick word from our friends at game time but first everybody look baseball season is a blast we love baseball season i mean unless you're like me washington nationals fan or Chicago White Sox fans. I know some of you guys out in Indy go out to Chicago for those games. Hopefully you're a Cubs fan, not a White Sox fan or Cincinnati Reds.

All right, guys, your favorite trio of Zach Hicks, Jake Arthur, and the Chicken are back here talking all about Colts training camp. And, you know, Jake, we've seen kind of this theme throughout training camp so far where Michael Pittman Jr. has been Michael Pittman Jr. Josh Downs is doing Josh Downs things, having some really good days. A.D. Mitchell's flashing. We've had the Anthony Gould flashes, which there were some today as well. And now we got the big Alec Pierce day.
Starting point is 00:12:58 So maybe the secondary is just really struggling. Or these playmakers that we have at wide receiver this year are really coming to play in camp because now that we're throwing this big Alec Pierce day in here, like that's a top five, six guys have all had really strong training camps so far. Yeah. I, I, I'd really, some of it probably is the secondary struggling a little bit. Cause obviously they're still young and there's some big talented guys out here. But just to add some context to you know this this alec pierce versus ad mitchell thing so
Starting point is 00:13:30 ad mitchell is obviously a big super athletic very quick for his size kind of guy and in a one-on-one setting that's gonna win more often than not so the noise that he's making and the things that he's doing are primarily coming in one-on-ones. But Alec Pierce, especially having a big day today, finally, he's done a couple of nice things throughout camp. He hasn't had a bad camp coming into today. But Pierce looks the part of a guy who has experience in an NFL team setting and is in his third training camp. Now, he's not the well-rounded receiver that we'd like him to be. He doesn't do everything. But he is a lot more involved.
Starting point is 00:14:14 He understands simple things like the depths of routes and getting off on a release and being really crisp in your routes, things like that. So today, finally a big day for him. And it was not just with Richardson. It was him and Flacco as well. You know, Richardson found him on a nice chunk play for, you know, about 20 yards where Pierce really had to go up and get it. I think the Colts posted a picture of that on their social. Flacco hit him for like a 50-yard bomb in between a couple defenders where
Starting point is 00:14:45 he kind of had to contort his body while he was falling to the ground and came down with it. That was a huge play. And that one, you know, Reggie Wayne loves his guys, but he's also hard on them. That got Reggie sprinting down the field and doing a chest bump with him and everything afterwards. So it was, it was a good confidence boosting day for a guy like Alec Pierce. And, you know, It was a good confidence boosting day for a guy like Alec Pierce. And if everyone's argument for A.D. Mitchell winning the starting job at some point is that Alec Pierce is going to start at some point, but that you still have a very serviceable at minimum downfield threat with Pierce.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Cause I think we are starting to see, you know, the guys who won't go downfield at quarterback are not in this building, you know, Mitchell. I mean, for, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:41 for all the things he's not, he is a pretty successful downfield receiver. He just hasn't had the quarterbacks to utilize that. Richardson will find him downfield. Flacco will find him downfield. Even Sam Ellinger, if they were ever matched up. Sam does go downfield despite the limited arm strength. So I think we're going to see some big plays from Pierce this year.
Starting point is 00:16:04 I don't think he's going to be some big plays from Pierce this year. I don't think he's going to be some big voluminous receiver. I think it's still going to be a limited target share, but I think we're going to see a higher percentage of, you know, of those downfield shots being towards him. And I think we're going to see a few more downfield shots this year. Yeah, I think the worst case scenario for Pierce, like if you're a big Alec Pierce fan, like, I mean, I love Alec Pierce.
Starting point is 00:16:28 So like if you're someone like me who really likes Alec Pierce's game and what he can bring you know worst case scenario for him is the Zach Paschal role from 2018 to 2020 that wide receiver for obviously he moves up if any injury happens but he is a great blocker he can win down field he can do little things on special teams I think that's what the Colts are gearing him up to do like you have been saying the last couple of days, he's getting a lot of special teams work. So yeah, I think it's obviously great for the Colts if both Pierce and A.D. Mitchell are having great camps. Like that's a fantastic thing. We could even throw Anthony Gould in there too. Having your fifth wide receiver who you drafted primarily for special teams, but also for what he can do on offense, like having him have a really good camp is great for you.
Starting point is 00:17:06 We did have a question here, though, real quick, Jake. So Louie's asking if Alec Pierce got hurt at the end of practice. Do you have any update on that? Did anyone say anything about that injury he suffered? No, because, I mean, Shane didn't talk after practice day. It wasn't a Shane day. But so he did fall pretty hard after one play, had to go up and try and get and I think he probably like hurt his side a little bit. It looked worse than I think it is initially
Starting point is 00:17:32 because it looked like he was in pain and stay down for a second. But then he hopped up and left. And it was late enough in practice where it's not, it's not like you monitor whether or not he's coming back in because it happened pretty late in practice. So, I mean, they're off tomorrow. We'll see what it looks like on Friday. I don't even know what day it is anymore. But, yeah, I don't think it's any big deal. I haven't been hearing any buzz or anything about AP's pretty banged up now
Starting point is 00:18:01 because he did pop up pretty quickly and get off the field. Yeah, and before we get out of this offense segment, because, again pop up pretty quickly and get off the field. Yeah. And before we get out of this offense segment, because again, we really want to focus on the receivers today because the receivers had the great day. And look, it's seeming like we're going to be running like the Kennesaw State bomb voyage or something with all these guys catching balls down the field. I mean, we got Downs, Pittman, Pierce. We got all these guys catching 80 Mitchell, Gould. Gould's getting 100 catches down the field every practice. So it's fun to talk about that stuff. Uh, but there is one more player
Starting point is 00:18:28 that I wanted you to particularly shout out because you have them in the notes here. It looks like Evan hole had a pretty good day. I know that there were no pads on today, but I heard there was a pretty big run and Evan hole was the guy that did that today. Uh, so what, what can you say about Evan holes game today? Yeah, so I thought this was his best day to note, and the running back three battle had been pretty uninspiring to this point. You know, Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson, both of their calling card is catching the ball. Hull has had a drop or two recently, and Goodson has just been meh. But today, Hull had a couple big runs. One of them was a long, what appeared to be a legitimate touchdown run.
Starting point is 00:19:10 And you can kind of tell if a run was actually productive or not based on how the offense reacts. And this was with the second unit, so the first team guys were watching. But he goes off on this thing. Everyone who's watching starts cheering, and Anthony Richardson sprints down the field screaming, chasing after his guy to celebrate. So I think it was a pretty legitimate long run, maybe 60 or so yards.
Starting point is 00:19:39 I think he caught everything today. And if we're talking the battle for RB3 with Tyler Goodson, Goodson did have, I think, a good run or two today. But on special teams, when he was back there fielding kickoffs, they were working on squibs. It appeared to be that or the kicking was just not great. But they were doing some squib kicks, and I think he failed to field both of them.
Starting point is 00:20:03 So that's not great because it's like, if you're not going to, if you're not going to have a huge role offensively, then you got to do something for us. And if that's in the return game as a backup, you know, you kind of have to check every your, your, your margin for errors is pretty thin. And so that wasn't very helpful. Yeah. And real quick, we're going to go defense in a second.
Starting point is 00:20:22 I promise guys, but I just, this only requires a two word answer from you, jake who was playing one tech with that second team defense during the evan hole run mr brian okay cool i just needed to verify that because i mean just for my own personal thing but don't worry guys we're gonna transition well no that's wait a minute that's second team now. Oh? It might have... Yeah, it probably was. It probably was. Yeah. Taven got a little more run with the ones today
Starting point is 00:20:51 because they were doing some jumbo stuff, but no, I think it was probably him with the second team. Okay, okay, cool. We're going to transition to defense fully now in just a second, guys, and talk about the veteran safety making some more plays there in that back half of the defense.
Starting point is 00:21:09 But first, I love sports. I love sports so much that I never want them to stop. But as the playoffs wind down, we get fewer and fewer games. And the sports aren't sporting like I want them to. But FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want. All I have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime that I am in the mood. And this summer, FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily. That's right.
Starting point is 00:21:32 There's something for everyone every day, all summer long. So head over to FanDuel.com and start making the most out of your summer. FanDuel, official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball. All right, Locked on Colts every day day as you guys are joining us on YouTube, you're watching Jake whisper sweet nothings to a chicken off screen. And then if you're joining us on audio, you're hearing that chicken screaming it back at Jake. So it's been a really fun time on today's show.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Before we close out today's episode, though, we do need to talk a little bit about the defense. And it looks like the same guy is really popping up every single day when it comes to the defense and that is julian blackman i saw more praise going his way for another big pass breakup what can you tell me about this veteran safety i know we're becoming locked on julian blackman at this point but like he's making plays yeah if he's making plays he's making plays yep i think it was what was a sunday's practice or the one of the more recent practices uh he had the the day with the two pass breakups he had the interception and
Starting point is 00:22:31 another pretty uh pretty well contested breakup today while alec pierce is on his heater while anthony richardson's deep ball is looking good richardson went about 40 ish or so yards down field on a post just down the middle of the field right in front of the end zone for Pierce, and Blackman leaped up and batted it down. And now the funny thing is we're looking for a free safety, right? Why is your strong safety the one that's making all of these plays deep downfield? I don't know if that's good.
Starting point is 00:23:02 He's matching the routes. He's getting vertical. He's roboting back. You know. He's matching the routes. He's getting vertical. He's roboting back. He's just reading these things at a high level, but yeah, I see exactly what point you're trying to make. Yeah. If I knew that was the case, then he easily would have been a lock in my top five most critical non-Anthony Richardson Colts that we did. Good on you for having him so high. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. And before we get into some of the lineup stuff, because I think that was really the biggest talking point when it came to the defense today.
Starting point is 00:23:28 This is a great comment here by Noah in our comment section. Did Zaire Franklin get into a fight today? I saw his tweet and he was like, he was literally bragging yesterday that he hasn't gotten to a fight yet. So man, it was, I think Zaire tweeted actually after today's practice, he did the SpongeBob meme or whatever that was zero days since nonsense or whatever. He did not hold up to his no fights thing.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Less than 24 hours later, he gets to do his first scuffle. Yeah, and this will be surprising, but for the first time ever, it was Quentin Nelson that he was fighting. Mind you, you would always assume that Quentin would probably get in a lot of fights I have been covering him his entire career watching practices and everything I've never seen him in a fight um so I guess he was holding on to Zaire for a little too long after a play Zaire is never he's a very proud man and is never going to be one to look like he's getting punked. And so it was on and he, he did put Quentin on his back and then everyone kind of, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:32 jumped in from there. But, uh, no, I think Quentin, Quentin, uh, helped him remove his helmet, you know, like a good buddy would now Quentin talk like Quentin talked after practice, and all of us had the good sense not to ask him about that. But maybe in a different setting where it's a little more jovial and he's not coming in from being in the 85-degree muggy heat, we can talk about it. But no, I'd never seen Quentin in a fight before, but if it was going to be against anyone, it makes a ton of sense for it to be Zaire. Oh, yeah. Him and Michael Pittman Jr. Those are the two fighters on the team right there. But Noah, thank you for the comment there. He has been good for like a year, year and a half. Like he got that reputation for being a fighter and then didn't do it for a while. And then this year it's fight night again. So I don't know. Yeah. yeah you know we all have relapses in our in our
Starting point is 00:25:25 journey to recovery so that's all that it was right there and you know zire can start a new streak of days without incident here that we need to talk about uh before we get out of here though jake uh when it comes to reps for the first team you have it here in the notes and obviously i saw a lot of people talking about it uh we have ongoing battles at free safety, which is a lot closer than any of us wanted it to be, obviously, at this point in training camp. And then also at that other defensive end spot across from Quidipe. That one's more so the rookies eventually going to take it, but we'll see how long that takes. What's the update on Liatu Latu versus Taequann Lewis? And then obviously Nick Cross versus Ronnie Harrison back at free safety yeah so I still
Starting point is 00:26:05 maintain that Cross is probably the front runner maybe by default I don't know uh but the that's what the reps say he gets the lion's share of the first team reps occasionally you do see uh Ronnie Harrison and Ronnie Thomas get in there later in the day um but now Cross is still getting them I can't really tell you how it's going. Like, it's going. Like, the coaches all say positive things. Like, Gus did say the last couple days, especially since the pads have come on, they're starting to notice more changes, and the defense is starting to, like, get it a little more,
Starting point is 00:26:37 and the execution is a little better. So we'll see. I mean, if they wind up making a move at safety, that'll be pretty telling. But as for the defensive line, um so we'll see i mean if they wind up making a move at safety that'll be pretty telling um but as for the defensive line so today i would say latu probably got a few more first team reps than taekwon but at the same time um they they had quitty kicked down to the second team occasionally to get taekwon and latu more reps um and it And I don't think that has anything to do whatsoever with Quitty. They just want him to still get some reps
Starting point is 00:27:09 while also getting Latu and Taekwon reps with the rest of the first team because they're going to need to be counted on more. So there was a lot of Taekwon and Latu on the field together today. Overall, I would say Latu probably got a few more reps, though. Okay, okay okay cool yeah that one again that one feels inevitable uh layout to latu is going to be the guy at some point but taekwon's obviously gonna have a big role free safety man your guys guess is as good as mine i have no clue if it's gonna be harrison cross justin simmons quandary dicks like your guys
Starting point is 00:27:39 guess is good as mine we can only tell you it's not gonna it's probably not gonna be daniel scott it's probably not gonna be him but we'll see. Crazier things have happened, I guess. But yeah, no, we don't have too much more for you guys when it comes to defense. Anything else really step out to you today, Jake? I mean, who took more of the base defense linebacker snaps from Carlize? Was it Alubi today? Alubi, yeah. I would say Alubi and Carlize are probably those next two linebackers up. We're seeing a little definition with stuff.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Liam Anderson, like I kind of had guessed, is probably in the mix for that backup Mike spot, but it just depends specifically what they want guys' roles to be. Because, I mean, they'll probably keep like six linebackers, you would think. Maybe seven with the new kickoff rules, we don't know. Liam Anderson is a dark horse for me to potentially make the roster. But you see McGrone out there getting some second-team Sam snaps, and they're just kind of rotating some guys through.
Starting point is 00:28:41 But I think the most consistently used first team guys outside of Zaire and EJ have been Carlisle and Alubi. Awesome. Awesome. Yeah. Liam Anderson's interesting. I think he was the linebacker out of Holy Cross. I want to say Holy Cross on draft of free agent last year.
Starting point is 00:28:59 I think there is a chance he could push a guy like McGrone off the roster, but it really comes down to the special teams. I do too. And being the backup, Mike being a position, they've really talked about the last couple of summers now. He, I know he,
Starting point is 00:29:13 I saw he made a good play. The second team was practicing on the other field while the first team was at one point. And I saw he made a good pass breakup in the, in the end zone. So, I mean, I haven't seen him doing poorly.
Starting point is 00:29:25 I've seen him do a couple of nice things and I, he's consistently in the mix with the second team. So I think that's pretty possible. Awesome. Awesome. Yeah. Well, to keep an eye on him,
Starting point is 00:29:35 obviously, and all these other players, players competing. Oh, real quick too. It does look like Jalen Jones, I think is going to be that outside. I mean,
Starting point is 00:29:41 nothing's really changing there. So we just want to make sure we have that update for you guys. I actually wrote a piece on it for horseshoehuddle.com today.
