The Indianapolis Colts took to the field today for mandatory mini camp.
Let's get to it.
You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network,
your team every day.
Welcome to Locked on Colts.
I'm Zach Hicks.
That's Jake Arthur, and on today's episode is brought to by Fanduel.

today. On today's episode, we're going to be diving into day one of mandatory mini camp for the
Indianapolis Colts. We have some news and notes, some injury updates, a notable retirement in the
secondary as well. So we do have quite a few topics to go through. And our boots on the ground,
Jake Arthur is going to walk us through all of them here. So in segment one, we're going to talk
about storylines and the offense. We're going to talk about defense in segment two. And then we're
going to close it out by what Jake wants to see going forward for the rest of mandatory mini camp
the next two days. But Jake, I'm going to throw it to you here for the laundry list of injuries
and guys that were out today. Now, just a warning, I guess, to fans at home, this doesn't
necessarily mean that like all these guys are out for the season. Oh, my gosh, the injury bug is
already piling up. The Colts are going to be really cautious at this time of year because it is so
early in the process. Guys are still working back. So when Jake goes through some of these names,
you're going to notice that some of these names don't even have injuries next to them because they could be so minor that it's not worth mentioning right now.
So Jake, without further ado, give us the CBS receipt of injuries and guys who miss practice today.
Yeah, very well said.
The team does like to play an extra cautious because they're about to be off for six weeks until training camp.
So they don't want to throw too much at guys who might be dealing with a little something here.
But what we've got, so everyone knows, Alec Pierce with the ankle,
talk about more of that in a moment.
Cornerback Charverius Ward was one of the guys who was working away from the team during
voluntary stuff.
He's back, but he was out today, just like with some minor back tightness.
He's day-to-day.
He could pop into practice before mandatory minicamp is up.
So that one's not really a big deal.
DeForest Buckner with the neck, both he and Pierce will not practice at all during
mandatory minicamp.
Jalen Farmer's got a knee.
He is a maybe on mini-case.
Camp Taylor Britt is still recovering from that Liz Frank injury that he had with the Bengals last year.
Mackay Blackman, not sure about that one.
He was at OTAs each of the last two weeks.
So this is a new thing, whatever it is.
Byron Matos was not out there today.
Safety Austin Brown also missed last week's OTA that we saw and today.
And then safety Ben Nickel.
That was a new one that popped up.
And then Ruben Lowry was not there because he is newly retired.
So yeah. So let's start that with our news and notes here. Ruben Lowry, a safety that you and I, I don't want to say we were super excited about this offseason because he was certainly on the outside looking in and the safety room. Like there were a couple of guys ahead of him, but he was right in the mix for that bottom of the roster safety spot. And now we take his name out of consideration because he is retiring. Now from everything you've heard, we don't have any confirmation yet, but it's not like a dire thing or like a horrible thing that's happened. It appears that he's just getting another like,
another thing away from football right now.
And we'll just see what comes out of that.
But it doesn't seem like it's anything bad.
So we don't have to send thoughts and prayers or anything to them.
But Ruben Lowry doesn't really seem to factor into the Colts safety room for this next season
because the Colts did place him on the retirement list today.
Yeah, exactly.
So that one's a bummer for the brand of the show because that's obviously a guy we've been talking about.
Like, you know, the Colts picked him off waivers from the Ravens last year.
He was a healthy scratch most of the time.
we thought there might be something cooking.
Like they got a guy here we could see a little bit,
but obviously not to this point.
But, you know, that's what one of like a dozen safeties on the roster.
So we got other guys to watch.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Now getting to more of the notable names here,
I guess the big news note that came out that was getting some run on social media,
is Shane Steichen when talking about Alec Pierce's injury,
which was a cleanup surgery in that ankle,
did mention that like they expect Pierce to maybe be
ready for the start of training camp, but if not, maybe a couple weeks in the training camp,
which is a little bit more concerning than the original prognosis we got from the team that he would
be ready for training camp. So Stuyken appears to be covering his basis a little bit with that
by giving a potentially longer timeline. But to me, I'm going to wait until training camp to freak out
about this. Like, we still, like he still said he could be ready for the start of training camp.
So I'm going to, I'm going to wait to freak out about this potential news. It's just a little bit more
info on that, but I don't think it's anything to be like terribly concerned about this juncture of
the off season. Yeah, and I would also shoot fast forward this six weeks. If he starts camp on
pup, I wouldn't freak out about that either because they will literally put guys on pup on day one and
I have seen them take them off and practice the next day. You know, so that designation being what it is,
I wouldn't look too much into it. I really don't think there's anything serious here. Like,
they have not let on, like they haven't been very non-committal about his status or anything,
like they have maybe with some other guys.
I do think there's optimism that he'll, you know, be fine and be able to participate
throughout most of training camp.
I just don't think that they can guarantee that it's going to be right away.
Yeah.
So we'll see exactly where it goes with that.
Another guy they're not really guaranteeing much with right now is DeForest Buckner,
who dealt with that major neck injury last year.
When Scyken was asked about him today, he said,
the goal is to have him ready for week one.
I'm curious at that what that means for training camp, though, for Buck.
Now, he's one of those players where if he doesn't touch the field for training camp,
I'm not concerned.
He's been doing this long enough that, like, he doesn't need a training camp to get ready, right?
He's De Forest Buckner.
He's former all pro to Forrest Buckner.
I'd rather him never practice again, never touch the field and practice because he's just,
he's been there, done that at this point.
But the question of his health is certainly going to be looming over this entire season.
And when your comments are more so looking for week one rather than training camp with him,
I could see a little bit more of the concern coming with that.
It's kind of what we expected, but it's still a bit concerning too.
Yeah.
And the terminology there, so you've got two guys like Daniel Jones and DeForest Buckner.
The goal for both of them is week one, but the tone sounds much different.
You know, like Buckner is not even out there right now.
And so obviously, like with the neck and at this point of his career, the obvious thing,
thing is you wonder if it's like career threatening or if you know you got to weigh your options
whether to keep going on at all or not buck is working tirelessly to make it happen um but
they've been a bit ambiguous on deadlines and stuff like that like i it just feels like kind of
a muddy subject no one really wants to get into and they're probably letting buckner drive the
bus a little bit here yeah yeah and then to close out the segment let's just talk all
quarterbacks here. I'll just give you the floor here, Jake. I did see Daniel Jones
participate in seven-on-sevons again, was doing individual, apparently asked the coaches
to do some 11-on-11, but they rightfully held him back from that. But I do think we could see
him in 11-on-11s as early as day one of training camp if this is where he's trending at this point.
So maybe not as much 11-on-11s for these backup quarterbacks as we may be expected a couple
months ago. But what was your overall takeaway from the quarterback? I know you didn't have many
other notes on other offensive players, but on all the quarterbacks just kind of, you know,
go on your little spiel here for the last two minutes of the segment. Yeah. So with Jones,
I think he could participate in 11 on 11s right now if they really needed him to. They're just,
there's no reason for it. So maybe they ramp him up to start training camp, you know, like that's,
that's what they're eyeing. They're not worried about adding to his workload right now. They just want to
see him continue to build off what he's doing.
But so during seven on seven today, he was one of two with a completion to Tyler
Warren.
He had a pass that was broken up by Jonathan Edwards.
And then he had a deep old Ashton Doolin near the sideline that was, I think it was
defensive pass interference, but a flag was thrown on it.
But it was cool to see him on cork a deep one.
And then the two other practices we've seen with Anthony Richardson and Riley
Leonard kind of battling back and forth for that Cuban.
B2 spot. It's always been Anthony going out there first. We have been told they alternate,
and we saw that finally today. Riley Leonard was the one to go out there first today.
They passed more than we had seen them to this point. Leonard was five of six during
11 on 11s, had, you know, a completion to Tyler Warren, Josh Downs, Jonathan Taylor,
even some Ulysses Bentley action in there, Will Mallory. He did throw the first interception
we have seen him throw so far to Bryce Betcher.
Again, we'll get to more of that later.
Anthony Richardson had an interception last week as well.
So they're even in the interception category as far as we're concerned.
Anthony, probably a slightly better day, but really neither of them moved the needle much.
Richardson was six of seven during 11 on 11, spread the ball around a good bit.
Will Mallory, Jonathan Taylor, Anthony Gould, Coleman Owen, Zach, I know that one's big for you.
He is going to be such a killer in the preseason.
and I can feel it.
Like, he looks good.
Moe Alley Cox and DJ Giddens.
Nice.
Awesome.
So not much separation on the backup quarterback battle.
Daniel Jones out there throwing velocity look good for Daniel Jones, at least from your eye, Jake.
I would say.
So like that deep ball didn't look probably as it did last year.
But he's still working.
I'm not concerned about that to this point.
He got it there.
It just didn't look quite the level it did last year.
Yeah.
And even then last year, there were a couple that floated on him too.
So it's not like he's not like,
You know, he's not like Richardson, right, where the ball just explodes off his hands.
So you're not expecting it to explode off his hands coming off in Achilles' injury.
So as long as he's getting it there, I think we're feeling decent about that.
Coming up, though, we're going to talk about the defense where unlike the offense,
Jake has quite a few more names to talk about, including one of his boys from this past draft class
and one of my boys from the last year's undrafted class.
We're going to talk about them here in segment two.

All right, everybody.
So this guy is making some waves, Zach.
This is big for you right here.
All right.
So the Colts main cornerbacks have spent a lot of times not on the field so far.
Mooney Ward, sauce gardeners.
they were out doing their own thing during the voluntary portion.
Mooney Ward with his little minor back thing was not out there today.
So it gives Jonathan Edwards a lot of time to make an impression.
This was a guy last year undrafted rookie.
He was in position a lot, but his ball awareness was not where it needed to be.
We've seen three practices so far, Zach.
The guy has three past breakups.
He's playing well, man.
Look, you guys always hear,
heard it here first, right? I could never say a terrible thing about Edwards outside of just track the football, right?
I've always been very high on this player. I just, I see so much in him, and I think that he can work out for him.
So I hope he can just keep parlaying this into better and better performances, and then we see it carry over into the regular season.
Still a young player, still a height weight, speed freak. Always the biggest thing was just tracking the football and coverage.
And for my money, he's the third most intriguing outside corner on this team. Like outside of Moonians,
sauce. I am more intrigued with him than I am with Jalen Jones at this point, Cameron Mitchell,
Mackay Blackman, or even Cam Taylor Britt, who I just, it was dreadful last year. He's coming
off of this frank injury. I am way more intrigued by Edwards, who has the height weight speed I'm looking
for, who has a lot of good moments, I think, of being in the right position. So I hope he can
keep this going because there's nothing more valuable than having a young player on that rookie
contract outperforming the contract.
So I would love to see him make the team again and be an impact player this year for
the Colts.
Yeah, I mean, he's the one with the most upside of the group behind the main cast of
characters, obviously.
And I mean, Mooney Ward, even if he's healthy this year and like moves on after the
year, whatever, you've got a young guy in Jonathan Edwards who perhaps shows enough this
year to earn a more consistent role in that lineup.
So him doing well is good overall for the Colts defense.
Another guy who I think might wind up making this will linebacker situation more interesting than it ought to be by the end of the summer is Bryce Becher.
I know the coaches love him.
And today, I mean, he made the play of the day.
And when guys are consistently making plays, you can't ignore it.
So during seven on sevens, Riley Leonard rolled out and threw a path to the outside and Betcher stepped in front of it and took it.
back for a pick six. I mean, that's really the biggest play we've seen of these last few weeks.
So a guy who we already knew was good in past coverage and can make some splashy plays and
did it at the pro level as well, that's pretty big. I mean, in the green scheme, it's just one
play, but that's how guys like Justin Wally and Hunter Woller endear themselves to the coaching
stabs like they did last year. So Betcher could be a guy that.
that we hear his name a ton more as the summer goes on.
And maybe the Colts wind up starting to rookie linebackers.
Yeah, and the past coverage upside was always the biggest appeal with him is what he can do in the
passing game.
I know we're not seeing much in the run game right now because these guys aren't out there
in full paths.
They're not hitting right now in these practices.
But I do think the upside was always there in past coverage.
So it's good to see him showing out in the one area that he can show out right now in these
practices.
So, yeah, Butcher, I think the best way for him to make an impact on defense this year is by showcasing that past coverage ability.
So for him to already be standing out like Woller did in this setting last year is huge for his potential starting or at least having a role on defense.
So great news for him.
And as long as he can keep endearing himself to the coaching staff, you'll have a role this year on defense.
And you mentioned Hunter Woller.
Let's go ahead and talk about it.
So him and AJ Halsey have been kind of rotating back and forth with the first team strong safety reps.
He made another big play today.
So Anthony Richardson rolled out and hit Anthony Gould.
And it was kind of a bang, bang play.
But Gould had possession long enough and Wooler stripped the ball really quickly.
And I think it was recovered by the defense.
So that's, again, it's just one play in the grand scheme of things.
But it's a continuation of the type of stuff we saw from him last summer.
it's very encouraging because it's just a quick instinctual thing, number one, but also, like,
that kind of stuff builds confidence when you're coming back from an injury that kept you out the
entire year.
You know what I mean?
Like when you're starting to make plays, you're not starting to think about your limitations as much anymore.
So I really liked a guy like Wooler making a big play like that, and hopefully that continues to build more confidence.
he could put the foot more on the back burner mentally and just move forward.
Yeah, and a big thing with Woller, too, is I know it's only been like the offseason setting and joint practice setting.
So it's not, you know, game setting like we're seeing on Sundays or anything.
But one thing we know about Woller through two offseason so far, through one off season and a couple practices this year,
is he's shown the ability to create turnovers and take the football away.
I mean, the joint practices last year against the Ravens, he forced multiple turnovers in that,
what was it one practice or two?
Was it two practices?
One.
One in Baltimore, yeah.
Yeah, the one practice in Baltimore, he forced like two to three
turnovers in that practice alone, including two to close out the practice.
And now he's continuing that this year.
So turnovers at the end of the day are some of the most important things that you can do.
Winning the turnover battle is something every coach will always preach.
So a guy like Hunter Woler, again, he's going to earn a role on this defense if he can continue showing that he can take the football away.
It's why the Colts took Halsey in the top 100 because he took the football away at the college level.
So having two guys back there competing that can both take the football away is exactly what the Colts are looking for.
Yeah, and that may be a big play by Wooler, but don't let that think that he necessarily is like running away with the competition because I do know coaches are really liking what they're seeing from AJ Halsey, both on and off the field.
Halsey and C.J. Allen especially are making a very big impression with being like first in the building type guys.
they're in there getting you know doing treatment like watching film hitting the weight room
they're doing all this stuff that the coaches want to see their establishing routines and
habits which is one of the first things that coaches will tell young players that they want to see
them do uh so i think the most optimal thing is like halsey wins the job the starting job
and they find ways to get wooler as involved as possible with him bynum and hallsey
all in the field of guy.
I think that's their ideal situation.
Yeah, and I think we're going to see that a good bit this year.
And I think just having those guys compete just makes both those guys better.
Even if you already have like a plan in place for Halsey to start,
I think it just makes both them better at the end of the day.
And they're both going to have, they're all going to have roles on this defense.
So I'm not too concerned about that.
And excited to see what could happen this year in 2026.
Coming up, though, Jake's going to talk about his expectations for the rest of the week
and kind of what he wants to see, whether it's guys getting,
a little bit more running with the first team or certain guys making plays.
We're going to talk about that to close out today's episode.
The biggest stage in world soccer is here, as you guys know, and every match feels like
it's got the potential for a memorable moment.
One goal can completely change the energy of a game, shift momentum, and alter the outcome
in an instant.
But that's what makes tournament soccer so exciting from the opening whistle to the final kick.
Now, Fandul is giving fans another reason to stay locked into every match with
every goal plays. That means you're going to bet on a match and get bonus bets for every
goal scored in that match. More goals means more bonus bets. All you have to do is turn on your
token. And that's what we love about these tournaments. You could turn on a match between two teams
from obscure countries you forgot even existed, but they're making this awesome run. And suddenly,
one goal changes everything. The tension builds so quickly that you're invested before you even
realize it. From the opening whistle to the final kick, let there be goals.
on Fanduel. Visit fandul.com to get started today.
All right, welcome back, everybody. We are talking day one of Colts mandatory minicamp.
We had plenty of like kind of injury news and notes at the top. The quarterbacks did a couple
little things. Defense made their plays though, but let's talk about stuff we haven't really
established yet on the field or stuff we still want to see. For me, I want to see a continuation
of some of these camp battles.
More specifically, I'd like to see Jalen Tuamolo out getting more run with the ones right now.
It's really been, I would say, if someone's got the leg up, I'd say it's Arden Key right now.
Key seems to be the guy getting the lion's share of the work opposite of Laiatu, Latu,
which we knew was a possibility.
He's the veteran.
He's the one that's been there, done that.
But that's not really the optimal situation.
Like you want to see Jailen Tuamolo out really force his way into that start.
starting lineup. And again, it's, it's not even early. It's like mandatory minicamp. Like,
we're not even a training camp yet. So like there's a lot still to be done. But I at least want to
see what it looks like for Tuaa Maloa out there with the ones. You know what I mean? Because,
I mean, there are chemistry things at play on the defensive line, but also I want to see what he
looks like against Jalen Travis. And if he goes over to the other side, Berenhardt, Ryman,
And like I want to see him in the same settings as Arden Key.
I just want to see it at least be kind of an even thing.
And we got to see has to him a low out gotten faster,
twitcher or stronger like he insinuated that he has.
I just want to see more tool him a low out.
Yeah, no, I totally get that.
And kind of on the same vein, you know,
when it comes to defensive line and offensive line right now,
you can't really properly evaluate it because again,
they're not hitting.
They don't have full pads on.
But I think the biggest thing is just what the rotation looks like currently.
So I did want to ask you, Jake, you know, another big one is the defensive tackle spot without DeForest Buckner in there.
Has it mostly been Tommy getting that run with the first team or Tommy getting the run with the first team or has Wooden also kind of rotate in there a little bit?
It's mostly wooden from what I've seen.
It's him first with Tommy coming in next from what I can tell.
I've seen Michael Clemens get in there a little bit, but I think that's sub-packaged stuff.
Grover obviously is getting his kind of Grover workload.
I feel like I've seen Nottie and Tilleri in there.
I guess I'd like to see more Tim Smith and Campbell all as well.
Yeah.
Because, I mean, you and I really want to see if one of those young guys can grab that
because it just feels like Nottie and Tillery are veteran fallback options.
Like if one of the young guys doesn't win it, well, we know we have this guy that's been there,
you know.
Yeah.
Are there any guys who, I guess I can talk on offense here.
because you didn't have any notes about offense, really, outside of the quarterback.
So are there any guys on offense that you really want to see just have a big day,
either tomorrow or Thursday, just to round out these mini-camp days as well?
Well, I will say I've been pleasantly surprised by the running backs behind Jonathan Taylor.
I think DJ Giddens is running, I don't know confidence is the thing,
but more decisiveness, I guess, which is good, because last year,
not a lot of opportunity to run the ball,
but whether it was a practice or in a game
when he did run the ball, it was just so mad.
Like you didn't really see much happening with it.
So he's running, I think, more comfortably,
getting perhaps closer to the Kansas State version.
Seth McGowan, though, I know they really like him.
Like, for all the reasons you can assume,
he's just, again, a decisive, violent runner.
And when you have a guy behind Jonathan Taylor,
just kind of have a niche role for him, like go get two yards.
He's going to go, he's going to go fight to the death for those two yards.
McGowan is.
I want to see a continuation of really pass protection, I think, is going to be it.
I don't think they care how either those guys catch the ball.
I mean, it'd be nice if one of them can really step up and do that.
But I think they feel both those guys' hands are just fine.
They're adequate.
If they need to throw them the ball a little bit, they can.
But it's not going to be a big part of the offense.
I think past protection in special teams, especially with me, special teams, a big thing I'm focusing on because that's really been my way to be able to tell who's going to be kind of the random last few guys in the roster.
It's like, oh, this guy's playing personal protector, or he's a gunner, or he's on every special teams unit.
Okay, well, maybe fans don't know who that is, but he's probably making the roster because he's a mainstay with Brian Mason's groups.
Yeah, absolutely.
And one more thing I want to ask you before we get out of here is what the wide receiver,
room without Alec Pierce for these practices and maybe a little bit in a training camp who are
some guys that you want to see really step up and kind of what of your takeaway's been so far of those
past catchers, those wide receivers and should Will Mallory be a wide receiver at this point, Jake,
right? I mean, I know you want to push that, don't you? That would be nice. Hey, I will say,
you know, Alec Pierce isn't out there, but he's as big as I've ever seen him. Like, he's about as big
as Will Mallory is. Like, that is a guy who does not skip a gym day. Like, he's huge. He's
He's gotten bigger every year.
It's just alarming because he almost looks like a tight end now.
But I digress.
I do think Ashton is comfortably in the lead there.
I think they're going to give Berks a little run,
but I don't think they expect a ton from him yet just because, you know,
a rookie, there's no pressure to get him super heavily involved.
Nick Westbrook Aquina, there's some stuff there.
I think they really like Lequine Treadwell,
but we've talked with like you can't have like nine receivers on the roster some of these guys aren't
going to make it.
The guy I feel easily most comfortable about though is that Doolin is probably going to get
this third receiver role.
And these other guys will come in with some again, very niche complementary roles and whatever
is in the game plan that week, the Colts will try and execute it.
But I'm starting to feel more and more like we're going to see Ashton Doolan and kind of
have you. It just makes all the sense in the world. I mean, every time they've called on him to do
anything, he's done it at a high level, right? Yeah. I mean, so much so they put him on defense last year.
They had him as a kick returner last year. They had him, you know, doing anything, right? He would come in,
play some slot. He'd come in, play some Z. Come in and play some X when Alec Pierce was out. Like,
they just trust this guy. And now when you have that void, you're going to turn to the guy that
you trust. That's just how coaches operate. So, yeah, I'm not expecting him to go off for 500 yards this
year, but I do think that he's going to have a pretty sizable role for this team and do a lot of
the dirty work for them. So, yeah, no surprise whatsoever. And especially at this early juncture
of the off season, like, of course, you're going to turn to the guy that you trust the most and
that you've seen the most in Ashton Doolin. So expecting good things from Doolin this year.
We've talked about it a lot this all season. We're going to continue talking about it because he is
Ashton Doolan. We put, we named a whole reward off of him on the Colt Squad show. It's obviously the
unsung hero award.
Ashton Doolin.
So expect more talk about him going forward.
