Starting point is 00:00:00 The Indianapolis Colts drafted a couple of hopeful building blocks last year in Anthony Richardson and Juju Brents. Well, with just one game left, Richardson's season is already done, but Brents is just kind of getting started. Let's get to it. You are Locked On Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcastts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. All right. Thanks for tuning in and making us your first listen of the day.

You know me from horseshoehuddle.com.
Starting point is 00:01:00 I'm your resident credentialed media member for the site, bringing you the news from the facility and from the stadium on Sundays. And we've only got one more crack at that as the Colts take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday to take on the Jaguars. So it's been a busy week for the Colts. That's only part of what we're going to talk about. So I'll give you those final thoughts on Colts and Jaguars for tomorrow afternoon. The Colts had a few guys named to the Pro Bowl. One of them a first timer. They also had a couple Pro Bowl alternates. But then there's the big injury news, of course.
Starting point is 00:01:32 We kind of always got to keep the pulse on what's going on with Anthony Richardson and his health. His season is officially done. Season number two ends the way that, you know, kind of the first season had the tone of as well with injuries kind of having the final word. But Juju Brents, who hasn't played since week one with a knee injury, he tore a meniscus in MCL. He is back for this final game of the season. So I think that just kind of goes to show to him that the game actually means a lot because he really has no reason to play in this game.
Starting point is 00:02:07 But let's go ahead and talk about Anthony first and foremost. So year two for him, the first year he only played four games. The shoulder injury, the right throwing shoulder injury that required surgery, and he was done for the year early. So we saw a lot of Gardner Minshew. Now, the Colts were knocking on the door of the playoffs with Gardner Minshew, obviously a quarterback who I think we all can agree was pretty capped, not aggressive, wouldn't throw downfield. So the Colts call it a mix of just putting a lot of eggs in the Richardson basket or just resigning themselves to knowing that they couldn't do anything without knowing that they had an Anthony Richardson in year two.
Starting point is 00:02:52 They really stood firm over the offseason. They re-signed mostly just their own guys. The only two outside free agents they brought in were Joe Flacco, who's the quarterback, who you hope to never see because he's your backup, and Rayquan Davis, again, a backup. So essentially what the Colts told us with that is we think we're one Anthony Richardson season away from getting over the hump into the playoffs. And the very disappointing thing about that was Richardson and the Colts regressed.
Starting point is 00:03:21 So the Colts right now looking at a season under 500, which that hasn't really been the norm. They've been one of those teams knocking on 500 or just a game or two above and doesn't look like that's going to really bring them any happy feelings going into the offseason this year. It's kind of been a thing where we have backhandedly said, you know, as long as you're just over 500, you know, Jim Irsay will be happy with what Chris Ballard has accomplished. So this is, no matter how you look at it, a disappointing season for the Colts. It's been a bit since they've had a season like this without some big excuse. Normally, you know, Andrew Luck retired. Peyton Manning was injured and didn't play the whole year.
Starting point is 00:04:10 There's always been some big reason why they haven't been very good. But they just don't really have that excuse this year. Anthony Richardson, you know, he missed some time, obviously. He missed weeks five and six with a hip and oblique injury. He was benched weeks nine and 10, and then has now missed weeks 17 and 18 with a back injury. But he played enough this season to where his presence should have, you know, set a tone.
Starting point is 00:04:39 And, you know, you can either heap praise or blame on his performance. And it's been quite a roller coaster. There's been games where his stats haven't looked good, but he drug the Colts to victory. There's been games where his stats haven't been good, and he looked like the worst player on the field. Evaluating him has just, it takes so much gray area and detail. And you really have to look at all 11 players on the field when you're evaluating a player like that, which when his second season now ends an injury, just like his first season, you know, reports say that the Colts are going to have Anthony out there as their primary starting quarterback for
Starting point is 00:05:25 for year three in 2025 but at this point I don't know how you don't go into it with more insurance number one now I'm not going to say signing Joe Flacco was the wrong thing to do over the offseason because I mean the guy just came off the couch and won NFL comeback player of the year so I don't think that was a poor. It just didn't work out how they wanted it to. But I don't know how Anthony has done enough to where you say, without a shadow of a doubt, he's our quarterback without any threat. We don't know what's going to happen with Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen. So whatever happens there is going to dictate a lot of this as well
Starting point is 00:06:03 as to what's going to happen with Richardson. But I think you at the very minimum have to bring in another quarterback who could threaten Richardson's spot and, you know, keep him accountable and keep Richardson grinding. Even if Richardson's preparation and all that stuff is improved and better, if it's not translating to the field, you know, that's great that you're preparing the right way, man, you know, good for you, but the product on the field has to be better. You have to have the next guy up who's capable of then moving the offense. It just hasn't really been the case with Joe Flacco this year.
Starting point is 00:06:43 So, you know, I think overall disappointing season from Richardson, considering what he showed in those four games in year one compared to what we saw this year. I think it's fair to say there was regression. There were some things he showed, though. I thought he had a really good season as a runner, which you would expect. He had the most prolific season as a Colts quarterback running the ball,
Starting point is 00:07:08 the most yards, the most touchdowns. I think we saw from him that he's a very clutch player. He had the two fourth-quarter comeback victories on the road. He had that really good third-and-eight throw to ice the game against the Titans. So I'm pleased with how he is in late game situations because there's some quarterbacks who are really good quarterbacks, but just wilt like a flower when it comes time to crunch time.
Starting point is 00:07:34 If you know Anthony is good in crunch time and you can just get him to be a little bit better and even out the edges, then, you know, I think there's reason for optimism that he could get better. But for all intents and purposes, you cannot come out of this following offseason without some sort of threat on the roster to him because let's just say he had played out of his mind all season. The guy is still – he's going to have to shake the injury- label. You are injury prone until you're not. And unfortunately for him, that's just something that's going to follow him throughout his career until he can put a string of, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:15 17 games together without having to miss time, at least not for something fluky. But obviously with this back issue, him, you you know acknowledging it could be something that that's chronic he himself said he's had this since eighth grade uh but it's never really been as bad as it was these last couple weeks uh you know he's crawling around his house he had an MRI that revealed the disc issue that's real cause for concern like that's that's something that makes you question whether you're going to be able to depend on him staying on the field or not long term. So going into season three next year, if he's the starter, I guess that's fine. You know, you still want to see what you have in him, but they have got to have more on the depth chart at quarterback than what they've got now.
Starting point is 00:09:02 So I think we can all agree with that. And then just a quick footnote on Juju Brents. This is another guy, you know, drafted behind Anthony Richardson, who his two years with the Colts has been defined by injuries as well. He's really never been 100% at any point. Came into the league rehabbing an injury, got injured a few more times throughout his rookie season, got this knee injury in week one, but he is going to finally make his return to the field.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Like I mentioned, I applaud him for that. There's zero reason for him to have to risk coming out here for one more game after he's missed essentially the entire season, but it shows the game means something to him. But in these two seasons, he's played in 10 games. He's made 50 tackles, has a pick, six pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. So I do like him as a player when he's on the field. He has a lot of my favorite traits in a cornerback.
Starting point is 00:10:02 He's lengthy, he's tough. He likes to get physical and to tackle. And he's aggressive when the ball's in the air. He's not going to win every matchup, and he's not a speed demon or anything. But I think him being out there raises the level of the defense. And I like Samuel Womack, but I like the thought of having Jalen Jones and Juju Brents out there with Womack being an option behind them as well, Kenny Moore in the nickel. Kenny's not getting much younger either.
Starting point is 00:10:30 I believe he's going to turn 31 this month. So having Womack back there to kind of be your next TJ Carey, a guy that could be inside or outside. He's had a fine season, but certainly Juju Brent's coming back. Let's say he's healthy going into next year. He's obviously going to get a starting spot back. So I like the cornerback group a lot better with Juju Brent's out there, but kind of like Richardson, you can't really make concrete plans for the future, guaranteeing his health because he hasn't proven that yet. So going into the 2025 season, you got to have more insurance at quarterback and you
Starting point is 00:11:09 got to have more insurance at cornerback. So one of those guys out, one of those guys back, some bittersweet news nonetheless. But coming up next, more Colts news throughout the week. We got a few Pro Bowlers this year and it's not Gardner Minshew like it was last year. So we'll talk about that in just a moment. It's almost playoff time. And if you're like me, you want to make the most of these final weeks of the football action. That's where PrizePix comes in. Everyone knows and loves the Pro Bowl. This was an interesting one for the Colts. When fan voting opened, they gave a few updates about guys who were in the top 10 among fan voting. Zyra Franklin was ranked really high. I think Nick Cross was second for a while among safeties. Quentin Nelson had been ranked pretty high. But then when you looked at the final fan voting numbers, the only Colts
Starting point is 00:15:04 player who was still among the top 10 in fan voting by the end of it was Zyra Franklin. And it took him leading the NFL in tackles to get that. But ultimately that ends and then they throw in like the player votes and then the coaches and everything to kind of balance it out because fancying everything is one thing, but it's good, you know, players getting a say in it and coaches because they have to face these guys and game plan for them. So that's a little telling to see who swings so drastically from the fan vote to then actually making it. So for the Colts, Zyra Franklin made his first Pro Bowl. This felt like something he was knocking on the door of for a bit.
Starting point is 00:15:46 He's broken the Colts single season franchise record in tackles each last two years. He currently leads the NFL in tackles with 165 right now. So probably not going to break the Colts single season record again, but he comfortably is probably going to lead the NFL in tackles. I think he's got a pretty healthy lead right now. Quentin Nelson, this is his seventh, and he's been there every year to start his career. He's the first Colts player to do that since Peyton Manning. And there's only like a couple other guards or interior offensive linemen in NFL history who have done that. And I mean, he's having a legitimate season. It's not just
Starting point is 00:16:25 based on name recognition because not gonna lie. A lot of times I feel like fans see a name they recognize and just vote for it because guys aren't always having the strongest seasons when they make the pro bowl. But Nelson number seven, this was one of his better seasons. I feel like certainly he's gotten back to looking like the dominant version of himself that we saw the first few years of his career. You know, we saw the cerebral freedom, I guess you could say, with him. When the Colts have had some of their really bad offensive line play at points over the last few years. It looked like some of the veterans like Nelson and Braden Smith were having to overcompensate for the lack of experience alongside them.
Starting point is 00:17:12 And now that the Colts offensive line is back and performing really well, it feels like Nelson is playing much more fluidly. According to Pro Football Focus, he's been one of the top guards in the league all year. He's top five in run blocking and pass blocking he passes the eye test you know some of the big matchups he's had he's been winning you know he faces cam hayward jeffrey simmons he's faced some some really big time guys throughout the year and he's had to do it with you know guys coming in and out at center all year tanner bordelliniini, Danny Penner, Ryan Kelly. Nelson has stayed consistent.
Starting point is 00:17:47 He's only had like one or two games where we're like, God, that wasn't really good. So very deserved for Nelson. Jonathan Taylor, this was his second Pro Bowl. Obviously, he had that incredible 2021 season with Carson Wentz at quarterback. So this was Taylor's second best season. He's over 1,200 yards. He's got 11 touchdowns from scrimmage. He's definitely bounced back from the last couple years where he was plagued by injuries and the holdout stuff and this and that, the disaster
Starting point is 00:18:16 that was 2022. He looked back to his normal self. He's had some real vintage performances. Him and Saquon Barkley have gotten back to being the top two running backs in the league when it comes to long touchdowns. So this is well-deserved for Taylor. I mean, I would say he's probably one of the top five running backs in the league. And running back is getting a lot more, I think, hefty of a group across the league. Obviously, you know, a Christian McCaffrey kind of having a downfall opens the door a little bit because, obviously, we saw Saquon Barkley have an enormous year. Derrick Henry had a renaissance with the Ravens.
Starting point is 00:18:53 The Lions have an awesome tandem, and Jameer Gibbs and David Montgomery. Josh Jacobs with the Packers. Like, we're just kind of seeing another big boom among running backs across the league. But I do think this is deserved for Jonathan Taylor. I mean, he's had a hell of a second half of the year. If you take away that drop ahead of the goal line, I think people have very few gripes about him.
Starting point is 00:19:18 Now, he wasn't great in the pass-catching part of the game last week in the Colts' loss against the Giants. But he's been the steadiest part of the Colts offense for weeks now. So I think this is very well deserved for Taylor. The Colts also had a couple of alternates. DeForest Buckner, he's made three Pro Bowls prior to this. This won't count as a Pro Bowl for him unless someone drops out and he goes into their spot. Same thing for Ryan Kelly, who has four pro bowl appearances before. Buckner,
Starting point is 00:19:51 obviously, you can name Buckner a pro bowl or all pro every year for me, and I would never have a problem with it. The things this guy plays through, the leadership he exudes, he's always productive. He's never been a liability, even when he's playing her, and it's like he's put together with toothpicks and duct tape. The guy is effective and commands attention from opponents each week. Kelly is a little iffy. This hasn't been his best year in terms of looking like the stout player that he always was before. Now, he does still grade favorably in pass blocking, I believe, according to Pro Football Focus. But, you know, he had a stretch of time when he was on IR with a knee injury.
Starting point is 00:20:32 He was really banged up for a few weeks leading into that and didn't look like himself. So this feels like a case of name recognition, like I was talking about earlier. But, I mean, there's been times where he's been snubbed before as well. So I'm not going to gripe about this one too much, especially, you know, a guy like Ryan Kelly, he tries, he's been a leader for the Colts. He plays hard. So, you know, if he winds up making this and it being his fifth Pro Bowl,
Starting point is 00:20:59 I think that'd be a very, very interesting and would certainly be a good way to kind of put on, put a bow on his Colts career, because I think a lot of people see the writing on the wall. He himself sees the writing on the wall that Sunday may very well be his final game as a Colt in Lucas Oil Stadium. So if he makes the Pro Bowl, that's, you know, that'd be good. We've obviously seen much worse examples of guys getting to the Pro Bowl before. This is at least a guy who is a regular Pro Bowl participant. This just hasn't been his strongest year. But for Nelson, I'll leave you guys with a little footnote here, and you can comment back if you think the same way. This is just the latest thing in what I feel like is almost assuredly a Hall of Fame resume for Nelson at
Starting point is 00:21:46 this point. Now, the Pro Bowl is not, it doesn't have the same luster as like an All-Pro or anything, and Nelson may make All-Pro again this year. We'll see. But again, seven Pro Bowls. He's made, you know, numerous All-Pros. I'd have to check it out. It's probably been at least five, I think. But, you know, if he gets a little more playoff success, I think he's probably already looking at Hall of Fame status. And this guy's probably got at least four, five, six good years left in him. So I think this is just another feather in a cap of a guy who might end his career in Canton, Ohio. So we'll see. I think the Colts, you can
Starting point is 00:22:24 argue all day about whether you take a guard that high in the NFL draft, but this is the instance of a guy who certainly outplayed the expectations. You take a guard that high, you pray that he's done half of what Nelson has done in his career. So some, some interesting pro bowl notes for the Colts there. We'll see if Buckner and or Kelly get in, but nonetheless, congratulations to Franklin Nelson and Taylor for making it coming up. We're going to talk about our final thoughts on week 18 Colts Jags at Lucas oil stadium. One more game to go.
Starting point is 00:22:59 What are our final thoughts? We'll get to it in a second. The NFL playoffs are nearly here, but it's not too late to get in on the regular season action with Vandal. It's America's number one sports book because right now new customers can finish the season strong with $250 in bonus bets. If your first $5 bet wins, Vandal's got so many ways for you to pick up a W.
Starting point is 00:23:22 I love betting on which players can score a touchdown, how many points each team's going to score. I always liked that before. I used to throw my name in the bank of picking databases each week of over-unders and things like that. Stuff like FanDuel makes it a lot easier now, though. Not only can you guys bet on who's going to win the game, but FanDuel also has bets for which players are going to score the touchdowns,
Starting point is 00:23:44 how many points each team's going to win the game, but FanDuel also has bets for which players are going to score the touchdowns, how many points each team is going to score. Again, you just visit FanDuel.com to join today. That's FanDuel.com for your chance at $250 in bonus bets. Make every moment more with FanDuel, an official sportsbook partner of the NFL. All right, guys. Let's talk about this game here. So no Anthony Richardson. That means Joe Flacco is going to be the quarterback for the Colts again this week. He is one in four in his five games as a starter this season.
Starting point is 00:24:17 Shane Steichen was asked on Friday if there was any consideration given to Sam Ellinger as opposed to Joe Flacco here in week 18. And it doesn't sound like there was really ever any consideration given to that. I think a lot of people would be interested in that. I've had a lot of people reach out to me on socials this week and say, they'd like to see Jason Bean. Um, I think everyone's just kind of over the Joe Flacco thing and like, what do you get out of it? And I gotta tell you, I don't, I don't disagree. I think part of it, the Colts can say they didn't know until, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:56 later in the week that Anthony probably wasn't going to play, but I don't know. The guy didn't practice at all last week and didn't play. He didn't practice at all this week and is obviously not going to play. So could you have had enough time to maybe get Sam Ellinger ready? Probably, but it sounds like they probably are just trying to do their normal thing and get out of the season, you know, throw Joe Flacco out there. They know what to expect. It's not always going to be good, but we'll see. So the Jaguars as, as you guys all know, as Colts fan, that's not going to be an easy out certainly helpful that it's at Lucas
Starting point is 00:25:34 soil stadium and not Everbank field in Jacksonville. Cause the Colts can't win there. It's been about a decade or more, but I don't know. I don't know how much of a home field advantage the Colts will have this week. I already know a lot of fans are super angry and super apathetic, either or. And that's not a great thing to have going into a final game against another, you know, a team that's in worse shape than you are. This is a game between two teams on the low end of the scale.
Starting point is 00:26:07 Fans are angry. Neither of these teams are in playoff contention. So in all honesty, this game doesn't mean much. I've seen a million people are trying to sell their tickets. And on top of that, Indy, we're going to get blasted with snow during this game. So I'm not expecting a whole rowdy crowd. Maybe you guys proved me wrong.
Starting point is 00:26:26 I don't know. But I certainly don't think people would be in the wrong for not showing up to this one. So I think if I was the Colts, I would just probably try and stick to what's been working the last several weeks, and that's feed Jonathan Taylor, get out of this thing alive, perhaps. They did not get out alive against the Giants last week. Obviously, we all know how that went, but, you know, I would feed Jonathan Taylor. I would try to get some shots downfield to Alec Pierce. You know, that was working last week. Pierce, you know, took over the game against
Starting point is 00:27:01 the Giants like he did against the Jaguars late in that earlier season loss. But yeah, defensively, they should be fine as long as they literally just show up and wrap up and make tackles. Like all the defensive issues we've seen throughout the year kind of go back to, it's more often than not problems with execution and just wrapping up and tackling. You don't see a ton of mental errors, guys flying down the field wide open. It's usually because someone has taken a poor angle or missed a tackle. Those are all things that can be fixed in an instant. And we don't know, but Gus Bradley kind of intimated on Tuesday
Starting point is 00:27:42 that they might have some new things that they try out this week. Guys may see more playing time than others. You know, maybe they make bigger lineup changes. Bradley did say if they're going to do anything, probably not going to do anything drastic, but if they were, they wouldn't tell us about it. But, you know, that could just mean, you know, seeing maybe some different safety play. You know, Julian Blackman is a free safety and doesn't seem all that interested in playing free safety. He kind of said as much when we spoke to him a few weeks ago during a media session.
Starting point is 00:28:16 Maybe you see a Rodney Thomas, but I don't know really what you get out of that either. You're going to see more Juju Brents, maybe more Jalen Carlisle as opposed to EJ Speed. Maybe out of Tommy Wye, out of Baware, get some action on the defensive line over like a Raekwon Davis or Taven Bryan. But there's just some, I don't know. I really don't know what their mentality is going into this one. I really don't know what to expect from the Colts.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Even last week, I thought they would beat the Giants, but that it would be close. You know, because the Giants are, you know, the worst team in the NFL. And they went out and just absolutely shocked the Colts. The defense wasn't prepared for them at all. It just looked like they were super complacent. So I think this will be very telling about a Colts team that's hopefully going to undergo a decent amount of change this off season. Do they show up and have some fire? Do they lay over and just clearly getting ready to be done with this season? I think that'll be very telling. I really don't want to pick them to win this game, but I guess I will. I'll make it close still.
Starting point is 00:29:29 I think they're, they're the better team over the Jaguars, but we saw how that worked last week. They are better than the giants are, but the giants didn't care about that. So I'm going to say 23, 20 Colts, Mack Jones versus Joe Flacco, the matchup everyone's looking for. So if you guys, you know, let, let me know what you, how do you think this one's going to go? I will say if the Colts win this one, it doesn't really move the needle at all. They're supposed to move this one. But if all things are even and we let's just
Starting point is 00:29:58 hypothetically say Jim Irsay is leaning towards keeping, you know, the core of Shane Steichen, Chris Ballard, Anthony Richardson. He wants them all together going into next year. And the Colts win against the Jags. I don't think that changes anything. But if the Jaguars come in to Lucas Oil Stadium and embarrass the Colts like the Colts were embarrassed last week, and it's one of those awful like 2022 style games that might change things we'll see Jim Merced does not like to be embarrassed and you know tensions are already high from the fan base and
Starting point is 00:30:32 everything like the only way to make that worse right now is to lay an absolute egg against the visiting Jaguars that's a division game that's at home. That's the Colts' final impression before the season ends. So we'll see how that goes. I think that is really the only big catalyst that can make us see big changes from the top with the Colts, because otherwise they get the feeling that Ursae would probably like to keep things together one more year. I don't, I don't know why. I mean, we've had recent discussions on this show of, you know, at least from the Chris Ballard perspective,
Starting point is 00:31:12 like what is there to take away positively to sell you on, on going in that same direction in 2025, but I don't know.
