What is up, friends? This is Jake Arthur and Zach Hicks of HorseshoeHuddle.com.
I am your resident media member for the Colts, and Zach is your resident film nerd for the Colts, we welcome you to today's show in honor of fireworks, the explosive
history of the 4th of July.
And those of you who will be listening to our next episodes with fewer fingers than
you have right now, we're going to be breaking down who we feel are the three most explosive
duos on the Colts, the guys that bring the fireworks, if you will.
So on the defensive side of the ball, you've got the potentially incredible pairing of Laatu Latu and DeForest Buckner on the defensive
line. And then switching over to offense, obviously that's where the sexiness is.
You've got another high potential duo of A.D. Mitchell and Jelani Woods, a couple guys who a
lot of people are waiting to just see what are they going to bring to the table. But first, the two that every single Colts fan's hopes and dreams will stay healthy and succeed.
That is Anthony Richardson and Jonathan Taylor.
So, Zach, we can look at this from a few different ways.
Just big picture, eye test, schematically, play calling.
There's so much that goes into it what is the potential of an
healthy anthony richardson and jonathan taylor pairing it's it's great man it's great i mean
jonathan taylor i believe went on zyra franklin's podcast after he signed uh after he signed that
extension and came back to the colts last year being like yeah i watched that rams game and that
was like the deciding factor.
Like I wanted to get out there with Anthony.
And unfortunately they only played like two snaps together.
But I think he even saw in that game,
it's like the potential of what I could bring alongside him.
It's something that the Colts have been talking about since they drafted
Anthony Richardson. It's a, it's a fantastic duo. I mean, look,
we've seen Jonathan Taylor in the past be an explosive
firework on offense. I mean, in 2021, he was doing it by himself, essentially,
where teams were stacking the box and really packing it in. And he was still one of the
best players in football. I know he's dealt with some injuries since then, but getting back to
where he was at the end of last season, especially in that Texans game, carrying that momentum into
this offseason, and hopefully him and Richardson can stay healthy,
I think we can see some really fantastic things with these two.
And I think the main thing I really want to talk about when it comes to
how explosive these players can be, not only in the run game,
but just in general, is just how they play off each other.
We talk about it in basketball.
I'm not going to dive too much into basketball schematics.
That's more of the Kaitlyn Cooper thing there. You guys can go follow her on social medias and stuff. She's great. But
when it comes to like basketball, for instance, there's something called shooter gravity.
You know, there's like gravity that three point shooters have that just spread out a defense in
basketball. And when you have a quarterback like Anthony Richardson, who can do what he does in
the run game or just have the threat of what he does in the run game,
it creates that gravity for a defense where they get pulled apart and they are looking in different directions
and everything is so much lessened in the box.
So in basketball, when you have a bunch of shooters who have that gravity,
it's easier to drive to the lane, it's easier to get to the basket, it's easier to score.
But when you have a guy like Jonathan Taylor at your running back, that's your elite driver.
That's the guy who can get to the rim, up the middle, and stuff like that.
Richardson just being a threat standing on the outside
or just doing these read options and pretending to run,
that's going to create that gravity for Jonathan Taylor to explode.
So not only are these guys both fantastic in their individual,
like their own rights,
but because they both have their own just air of gravity
that comes with who
they are as players, they open up so much for the other one and they're just going to play off each
other so well. So when you think of what Richardson and Taylor can be together, it's not even just how
great they're going to be in the red zone, which we could talk about as well, but in the open field,
just creating those explosive plays. I mean, Richardson last year in that Rams game had what, five, six, seven
explosive plays that he generated in that game, like two on the ground. And I believe it was like
four in the air that were over 20 yard passes in that game. Just some fantastic stuff. I mean,
I can't imagine what it's going to look like with these two on the field. And I just hope
every single day we can see it fully healthy for a full 17 games because the potential with these two guys is just great.
Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned the red zone part.
And it's something we got into a little bit yesterday on yesterday's show.
But that's two guys with a very, very high success rate of having the ball in the red zone, particularly down inside the five to 10 yard line. And it really is like,
it's,
you know, an overused phrase and everything.
You're like,
pick your poison,
how are they going to defend both of them,
whatever.
But that legitimately,
we've heard from coaches.
We've heard from like smart NFL people that it's terror on a defense to
have to decide who to allocate more resources to on defense,
but down in the red zone, that's two guys that already have a nose for the end zone.
So that'll be really successful.
So that was one of the first things I thought of.
And the next, when you were talking about the gravity and the attention that is required,
just imagine these guys in shotgun in the backfield together.
You fake the ball to Jonathan,
which is going to suck in a million defenders
because they're all going to be focused on,
okay, one of these guys is going to have the ball.
And then so you bring in all those guys,
Jonathan bounces around to the outside on a route,
and then he's wide open on the outside for a reception
with Kylan Granson, Pittman, or Alec Pierce lead blocking.
You know, there's just so much you could do with guys like that
before they even have the ball because of the threat of what they could do.
So, I mean, fireworks can look a lot of different ways for these two,
I think, in particular.
But we know – we haven't really seen many, like, long runs from Anthony yet.
In his career, it's certainly something he did at
Florida. Obviously Taylor has been a human highlight reel throughout his career. Like
the 10, 15, 20, 60 yard runs have become routine for him almost. So we know he's going to do that.
I'm waiting to see if them finally being healthy together truly unlocks Anthony's ground game potential.
And if it looks a little more similar to what we saw at Florida,
it was successful in his rookie year in the small sample size he was out there.
But he was passing more than he was at Florida.
And then, you know, there's, you know,
you can beat college kids a little better with your feet than you can NFL players.
But through a 16-17 game schedule, I've got to imagine there's going to be more big play
opportunities for Richardson on the ground. Yeah. And then just talking about the impact
on the offense too. I mean, again, the Colts kind of stayed true to their identity. Like even with
Gardner Minshew in there, they were still doing a lot of RPO. They were still doing some read option,
like triple option type stuff with Gardner Minshew. But obviously you tone that down a little bit because Minshew is not the
running threat that Anthony Richardson is. But I mentioned it yesterday, the teams that really gave
this Colts offense on the ground, like a lot of issues were like the Cincinnati Bengals,
where they're playing this like heavy, like press man type look stuff, a lot of single high
type of looks in that game. The Atlanta Falcons are an aggressive press man type look stuff a lot of single high um type of looks in that game the atlanta
falcons are an aggressive press man system that they were running in that game and the colts just
couldn't get anything going in that one and like the carolina panthers where they were doing a lot
of bare front type stuff and stacking the box you can't do that with anthony richardson out there
there is just too much of a like if you're going to run press man coverage all game long against
richardson you have to have at least one spy keeping an eye on him.
And then you still have to worry about the big play threats on the outside.
If Mitchell or Pierce or Pittman can beat their guy off the line, you're going to have some vertical shots out there.
It's not the same with Gardner Minshew in the backfield.
So simply having Richardson, again, just standing in the backfield, doesn't even need to do anything. Just his presence being in the backfield gets teams out of as much press man, as much cover one, as much bare fronts and stuff like that.
I believe Colts Filmer posted it on Twitter the other day that the Colts faced cover one on 28% of their offensive snaps last year.
You guys can double check me there.
I believe that's what I saw on there.
But 28% is pretty high for the modern NFL. And a lot of that had to do with,
again, Gardner Minshew being back there, not being the biggest arm threat, not being a big mobility
type threat back there. You can play more cover one and get into wide receiver spaces. When you
have Anthony Richardson back there, you can't play cover one as much. You can't play press man
coverage as much. You have to sit back in more quarters. And if you're going to sit back,
then you're giving more space for these explosive run threats in Richardson and in Taylor. So I
think the potential is there for these guys to be fantastic. I don't need Taylor to be 2021
Jonathan Taylor. I don't need Richardson to be running like he was at Florida. But
again, just have that higher efficiency, have the couple explosives every single game
and make some things happen. I think these guys have the couple explosives every single game and make some things
happen. I think these guys have the potential to do that next year. Yeah, I think keeping defenses
honest and not allowing them to get too cute or exotic really opens up things for the third pillar
of this, which is Shane Steichen and the way he sees offense and how to combat defenses. So that'll
be huge. Coming up here in a second,
we're going to talk about two other components to the passing game who all fingers crossed,
knocking on all the wood, they will be healthy and able to show what they've got this year.
When I think about doing stuff outside the house during the summer, I think of going to the fair,
concerts, baseball games, and there's really
only one place to go take care of most of my ticketing needs, and that's GameTime. GameTime
is an authorized ticket marketplace of Major League Baseball, which makes getting tickets
faster and easier. Prices on the GameTime app, they actually decrease the closer that it gets
to first pitch. So it allows you to be a little spontaneous if you don't have plans at night. With killer last minute deals, all in prices, views from your seat
and their lowest price guarantee, Game Time takes the guesswork out of buying MLB tickets.
Obviously here in Indy, we don't have an MLB team, but I know a lot of you guys like to go
up to Chicago to catch the Sox or the Cubs, out to Cincinnati to see the Reds. But did you know that you can actually get tickets to see the Indy Indians on the Game
Time app?
Victory Field, if you've never been there, it is the best minor league stadium in the
country.
That's not just me saying that either.
It is often recognized as such.
When it comes to concerts, my wife and I have used Game Time for concerts three times now already this summer.
I got that discount code.
It works.
It is legitimate.
We just went to Tyler Childers last weekend.
That was a great show.
We've got Alanis Morissette with Joan Jett coming up.
And then Post Malone just announced his concert tour.
We're going to see him later this year.
So do what we did.
Go to Game Time and lock in your
discount. Some of the best parts about GameTime is their last minute deals means you can save up
to 60% off of buying last minute for sports, concerts, comedy, theater, whatever. They've
got the lowest price guarantee, which means they'll give you 110% of the difference if you
find similar tickets at a better price somewhere else.
And then there's also the GameTime ticket coverage.
Huge for parents or just people with hectic lives.

All right, Locked On Colts listeners, we are back talking explosive playmakers,
at least on offense for this final segment here.
Then we're going to switch to defense, obviously, in the next segment.
But two guys who I think are big X factors,
and we've talked about them quite a bit this offseason.
A.D. Mitchell, the new toy for the offense,
the new shiny toy for the offense there.
Not a top 50 pick, just outside the top 50, I believe.
He went, what, 52, I think, in this past draft of the Colts.
But A.D. Mitchell coming in to the Indianapolis Colts from Texas,
and then Jelani Woods, the big play tight end.
Obviously, we didn't see any of him last year,
but he showcased some big things in his rookie season two years ago.
These two guys who, again, they're kind of the big X factors because on paper, huge explosive traits, big time athletes.
We've never seen them with Shane Steichen though.
And that's the big thing.
Like what are they going to look like with Shane Steichen?
What's their roles going to look like? I mean, we can kind of assume and project their roles, but it's going to be interesting to see how they are adapted into this offense and how
Shane Steichen makes use of these two fantastically elite athletic profiles that we're looking at with
these guys. Yeah. And we just, we especially wanted to feature them on this, you know,
explosive, you know, guys who bring the fireworks episode, because we've seen it plenty of times in
the past where there are guys who when they're on the field they're it's they're out there because
the play is designed for them to make go make a play uh they're the feature of the play they may
not play a ton of snaps but especially and you know Mitchell being a young guy and Woods technically
still is too until they really get rolling, their limited snaps initially,
their sole purpose is very likely to be go make a play.
So with Mitchell, he's obviously – you're interested to see what happens there
because who do they group him with?
Does he just solely replace Alec Pierce when he goes out there?
Do they match him up with Pierce to get things vertical and threaten the
defense?
I don't know,
but from what we've seen on his college film and,
and the practices we've seen,
he can go down field.
He can get it.
He,
everyone's excited for it.
He can,
he can go up,
he can get it.
He wins those contested catches.
He's got the speed to beat people deep,
but he can also
create yards after catch. I mean, plenty of people saw a CD lamb type of player on his college film.
And then Jelani Woods, we've seen kind of similar stuff this off season in the practices.
He gets downfield. Plenty of the plays that he made were either receptions downfield,
or he got the ball with a head of steam,
you know,
picking up yards after the catch because he was given the ball with,
with room to run.
So both of these guys,
I think are going to be chunk play machines when they're out there.
Now that doesn't mean woods is going to be like 2018,
Eric Ebron or anything like that.
But I think,
you know,
percentage wise of snaps that they're out there
or routes that they run, I think these guys are going to be moving the chains
and making big plays.
Yeah, and, you know, the Colts did say this offseason,
I think Chris Ballard mentioned it quite a bit,
where, look, good things from the offense last year.
I think they finished just outside the top 10 in scoring offense,
and they did that with a backup quarterback for majority of the season.
So it was an impressive season.
But overall, they wanted to get better on third downs, better in the red zone,
and obviously better in the explosive play department.
Like they did some good things with explosive plays.
I think Gardner Minshew did a lot with the broken plays,
you know, getting out of the pocket and getting the ball down the field.
But when it came to like schemed up deep shots,
when it came to actually threatening a defense with consistent downfield throws and getting the ball out,
you know, in that that third level of the defense, the Colts were not one of the better teams in
football in that regard. Again, a lot of it comes down to Gardner Minshew, you're not going to force
him to throw the ball, you know, 20 yards down the field 10 times a game, because that's just
not going to be an effective strategy with him. But the other aspect is, you know, Pittman, we've seen a little bit of
it in the past, but he's not really that downfield guy downs more of the underneath guy, the tight
end group, very underneath. You really only had Pierce for those shots and they were really,
you know, few and far in between last season. So getting a guy like Mitchell in here where,
you know, he's not perfect. He
obviously has some, some room to grow, but he can beat press man coverage. He can get vertical. We
see with the height, weight, speed profile that he has, you know, six to 300, 300, 200 pounds,
six to 200 pounds, uh, and runs that four, three, five. I mean, this is a guy who can get down the
field vertically, uh, and, and make some things happen down the field. And then Jelani Woods,
again, we saw it in his rookie season.
We saw it in college.
We see what that athletic traits can look like.
These are two guys that can add that explosiveness to the offense that the Colts were maybe missing
last season.
It doesn't have to, again, it doesn't have to be every single throw is 30 yards down
the field, but you can actually open up your offense to more throws like that this next
season. Again, it doesn't have to be 20 times a game, but if you can at least get that to five,
six, seven times to where those are real threats every single game, that's going to open up your
offense so much more underneath and in the intermediate game. So I think these two players
are massive X factors for this team. I'm excited to see how the Colts use them. If they rely on
more run after catch with Jelani Woods, if they use AD Mitchell more vertically down the field, I'm excited to see
how these two guys are kind of put into the offense, but it's hard to look at the athletic
traits and not get excited. Again, with Mitchell, 6'2", 200 pounds, runs at 4'3", 5", great
explosiveness profile as well. Jelani the RA the RAS king for a while
at six foot seven you know running the I think it was a four six flat uh at the combine it might
have been a little lower than that uh just fantastic athletes and I'm sorry I'm just
excited to see what Shane Steigen can do with these two guys yeah and like you mentioned it
doesn't always have to mean downfield shots is how they show their explosiveness uh whether it's
yak or you know down in in the red zone i mean obviously i think the focal point will be richardson
and taylor making things happen on the ground but i mean these guys are athletic have the height
advantage the vertical advantage you throw pierce in there as well i mean it it may be from within
12 yards just putting the ball up and letting those guys go get it.
So I think having options like that definitely diversifies the attack in the red zone and broadens your options as well.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
But coming up, guys, we're going to switch over to the defense and talk about the two most exciting explosive players on that side of the ball.
Layatu Latu and DeForest Buckner.
All right, Jake, so it's, you know, people don't want to hear defense.
We're talking explosive and the fireworks here,
but man, this Colts defensive line has potential to be so much fun.
We've talked about it quite a bit this offseason where, you know,
the Colts defensive line was pretty good last year.
I mean, all things considered, they missed Grover Stewart for a little bit. Some guys dealt with injuries, but for the most part, this was a good, effective
defensive line. And now you're adding a guy like Liatu Latu to that where, like you mentioned on
yesterday's show, Daniel Jeremiah and a lot of respected NFL draft analysts were saying this guy
has that Nick Bosa top-end potential. So when you're pairing a player like that, where again,
I'm not saying he's going to be that in day one,
but a guy who has that potential and knows athletic traits alongside a player
like DeForest Buckner,
who's been consistently a top 10 defensive tackle in football since he's
entered the league.
We could see some really good things from this Colts defensive line next year
and, and even better things that we saw last year,
where they set the franchise record or the Colts, the Indianapolis Colts franchise record for sacks in the season. We could see
even better things from this defensive line in 2024. Yeah, it's just a thing where once
Latu gets to the point where offenses are genuinely threatened by him being out there
and everything, you cannot double team everybody like you're
going to get that push inside from from Buckner maybe he gets double teamed but it's going to
open up you know it's going to open up a one-on-one opportunity or just like something as simple as
the outside blocker has given up his leverage and is like dipped his shoulder or something like
those small minute details that like defensive line coaches preach and tell their players to attack those type of things it it can
just be a death knell and it's game over as soon as those defensive ends and those defensive players
really know where they've got that advantage and i mean grover is not like going to be the biggest
threatening spot inside in terms of
pass rush i mean he can do his own thing um but then i mean it opens up things on the other side
for quitty samson evicom i mean they're going to put up multiple packages they're going to have
like the the nascar package and everything uh but i definitely think having a guy like Buckner out there will ease the transition for Latu,
and it doesn't put so much pressure on him, doesn't put so much on his plate.
Because, I mean, a lot of these guys, like Bosa and everything,
these guys did have to come in and they were double teamed
because they were the focal point of their defensive line.
You know, you look at like the Browns with Miles Garrett as well.
They had a lot of pressure and a lot to combat right away as rookies and I just don't
think lots who's going to have that because Buckner may not officially be named to the Pro Bowl every
year but the guy is a perennial Pro Bowler and he's having him be that player on the interior
as often as they can line these guys up next to each other
as they can. I think having that guy on the interior, as opposed to just on the other side
of the line, I think that's going to be huge because it's going to open up so many things
for both players. I think what's really funny about this segment in particular is, you know,
we can obviously expand it to the whole defensive line and talk about where, you know,
they ought to lot to you into Forrest Buckner, they're not necessarily like testing explosive players.
Like they're great athletes.
Don't get me wrong.
I'm talking about NFL players here.
But I wouldn't say that those two guys,
their defining traits are their explosiveness.
You know, Latu, you're looking at the bend and the agility with him,
as well as, you know, the snap timing and, you know,
the great things he brings on film.
DeForest Buckner is the length and the size and all that.
So you have these two guys who are great at timing up the snap.
They're really great technicians.
They're really great at getting off blocks.
And then you have the legit explosive players next to them,
which are Quidipe, Dayo Adembo, Samson Ebukom, Grover Stewart.
I think I would throw in there too.
Tyquan Lewis was a fantastically explosive athlete
when he was coming out of college.
I know he's probably lost a little bit of that, but he's still a fantastically explosive
player.
These are the legit explosive players.
So you have these other guys who are just fantastic athletes, maybe not as developed
as DeForest Buckner and Laatu Latu.
But if you're going to commit three blockers to these two guys on one side, well, on the
other side, you got to commit two blockers to two guys, which are going
to be again, Dio Dangbo, who is this absolutely freakish, you know, six foot five with, with
just tree trunk or not tree trunk, tree vine arms or whatever you want to call them there
with just like the longest arms in football.
Or you're going to have Quidi Pei, who's a fantastic athlete as well.
You're going to have Samson Ibukam, who nearly had 10 sacks last year.
Like really, really good guys on the other side too.
I think there's going to be so much trouble for other teams up front.
And like we've said a lot, you know, this entire offseason,
the Colts defense is ride or die with this defensive line.
You know, if this defensive line is clicking and doing their thing,
the Colts defense can be a fringe top 10 or even just a regular top 10 defense in football
because the defensive line can be a fringe top 10 or even just a regular top 10 defense in football because
the defensive line can be that good. But if this defensive line doesn't find, doesn't figure out
their identity and they're not clicking, things could get really bad for this Colts defense next
season. But I really do think, you know, this Colts defensive line has such great potential with
the players that they're bringing in, with the players they're bringing back, with, you know,
Pei and Dio Adembo just continually getting better i i think you know this group up front can be so good for this colts team
and and lao tu lao tu and deforest buckner obviously you know the big faces of it but
those other players are just fantastic athletes as well yeah the depth of that and the relentlessness
of what offensive lines are going to have to face is pretty much not cool for them.
But when I think of explosive, you know, sacks are obviously an explosive stat as well, but
it opens up other playmaking opportunities for the rest of the defenders as well.
Because you look at strip sacks, you know, a play I immediately think of is last year,
DeForest Buckner getting the sack on Trevor Lawrence, which causes the fumble.
Now Buckner was able to scoop it up himself and get to the end zone.
But I mean, when, when you, when you strip a quarterback, I mean,
there's 10 other defenders there that could potentially go get the ball and
make something happen with it. So you look, I think of explosive,
you think of sacks, of course,
but I think of just the rushed pass attempts by like uh
bryce young you know the two pick sixes he threw to to kenny moore so i think of rash hurried
decisions for quarterbacks i think of fumbled balls caused by these guys like watu and buckner
it it's explosive in just so many different ways. Yeah, yeah. You know what? We haven't even mentioned the most explosive player on this defensive line yet.
Taven Bryan.
Taven Bryan, baby.
Do you remember his athletic profile coming out?
I mean, we don't always pay him in the prettiest picture,
but I did really like him coming out of Florida.
He had that elite first step.
No one ever was off the snap quicker than Bryan was.
No.
Nobody gets off the snap quicker than brian was no nobody nobody gets off the snap quicker i mean i'd have told me as well as really athletic too off the snap like they have
a lot of athletes up front in this defensive line i know the colts are a very athletic team in
general like they like to draft athletes and and build around athletes but man that defensive line
group is freakish i mean even guys at the bottom like Isaiah Land and Titus Leo,
like those are some freaky athletes.
The guy they just drafted out of Oklahoma in round seven, Lualu,
like super freak athlete.
One of the craziest profiles I saw in this draft class.
It's throwing a lot of freaks out there.
But at the top, I mean, these guys know what they're doing.
They were all effective last year.
I mean, if you're looking at your top five or six pass rushers,
and your worst one was Tyquan Lewis, who, what, had five sacks and limited snaps last year?
He had the best win rate among the whole group last year.
I'm saying if your sixth guy is Tyquan Lewis,
who probably could start for a handful of teams in the NFL,
and then your fifth guy is, what, Quiddie Paye?
Your fifth best pass rusher is Quiddy pay who
nearly had 10 sacks last year and did some good things like you're doing some good things up
front. So yeah, I know layout to law to and to force Buckner, your big names up there. And,
and if lots who can be what we expect in year one, this defense align is going to be clicking.
But this is a really good group, man. They're really explosive group. And like you said,
just just adding that constant pressure aspect to it where they're you know hitting quarterbacks
more they're they're hurrying up the the processing of quarterbacks they're forcing fumbles they're
forcing bad decisions it's going to lead to so many great things for this defense so I know we
need to talk a little bit about defense on here on this episode here and not just all offense but
this defensive line man they have such great
potential and and it really can be I mean I know they're getting a lot of praise this offseason
pro football focus had them I think is what the third best defensive line group in football
uh the other day I want to say like it was like number two in the AFC behind just the Jets like
they have the potential and they have the credit to them too like this could be a great defensive line group uh for the Colts in 2024 and a good problem to have I guess is I don't I don't know that the
Colts are going to be able to adequately analyze the young the young high ceiling guys they have
like Titus Leo Isaiah Land ade to a lesser extent like, I think he's still going to get some, some looks,
but like Laulu, like you mentioned, like those guys who were so far down the depth chart, like
there's just not going to be enough snaps to go around. Like even in camp, I don't think like
they've got a really deep group. Like I think they're going to have to try and sneak those
guys onto the practice squad to truly evaluate them. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see you guys.
I mean,
it's a fun thing to talk about,
you know, it's,
it's never a bad thing to have too much depth at any position.
This Colts defensive line could be explosive and fun in 2024.
