What is up, everybody?
This is Jake Arthur of HorseshoeHuddle.com,
your resident Colts credentialed media member for the site,
and we are joined by a very special guest today.
We've got PFF data analyst Dalton Wasserman here with us.
He's the co-host of the PFF College Football Show,
and you, of course,
hear him with friend of the show, Trevor Sikma on the PFF NFL podcast as well. Dalton, welcome to
the show. Great to have you for your first time here. Yeah, how's it going, Jake? Fantastic.
Thank you. Thank you for having me on, man. It's just always good to talk ball. We had another
wild week of football on both the college and NFL side. So there's a lot to talk about for sure.
Yeah. So probably maybe a bummer for you to have to talk about a team that looks
like the Colts do right now.
But just, you know, kind of coming up first, at least locally,
they're 0-2, but we didn't expect it to look like this.
You know, you expect maybe a loss opening week to C.J. Stroud
and then week two to Jordan Love, but it wasn't even Jordan Love week two.
But this looks this looks ugly.
So if you wouldn't mind, tell us just what your expectations for the Colts were going into the season.
And then what's kind of your overview of what's going on with them right now?
Honestly, I think they were one of the hardest teams in the NFL to to make a solid prediction on because you have such a wild card player in Anthony Richardson also coming off of the injury.
And his skill set anyway is very high variance, right, with the deep balls and the running.
But then it's just not that consistent.
And it's kind of the same way he was at Florida.
And then you have a Colts team with a secondary that sometimes it gets away from him,
especially outside of cornerbacks.
So I honestly think they were one of the hardest teams to predict.
And my prediction was somewhere between seven and nine.
I want to say seven or eight wins it was that I had them for,
because it's just there's a level of inconsistency.
There is a high ceiling if Richardson plays well, but if he doesn't
and we haven't seen him play very consistently through the first two games,
then this is what it can look like.
So there's some issues that especially the young quarterback is working through so far. They were
a hard team to predict in the preseason, but you can see what their difficulties are right now
through these first two games. Yeah, I think that's maybe the biggest problem is the plan when
you started him all along, you knew there was going to be some bumps along the way. There was
going to be some games where he looked awful, but there needed to be enough support around there to where it didn't look like this.
You know, the run game needed to be clicking.
The defense needed to look at least league average, you know.
So right now they've kind of got themselves in a rut where
they're totally reliant on Anthony to have to be Superman.
And we saw it in week one, but it just didn't necessarily come to fruition in week two.
I mean, is that what it seems like from the outside as well?
I honestly think the rest of the offense,
other than they haven't gotten the ball to Michael Pittman
as much as they did last year so far.
But I think the offense has looked pretty good so far.
The offensive line has played well.
I think Jonathan Taylor's looked good.
Even against Green Bay, they ran the ball well. I think their problem is they're a team that can't afford
to fall behind early, and that's what you're seeing in these games. It's just the combination
of falling behind early and then Richardson. There seems to be a disconnect right now between
Richardson and Shane Steichen's offense and the way it works, and I didn't think this would be
the case. I really thought Steichen would be able to help Richardson with this,
but it actually is a very ball control offense,
even though it's a heavy RPO, but there's a lot of short passes.
There's a lot of times where when he was with Philadelphia
or even last year with Gardner Minshew,
the most frustrating part about playing this offense is
it feels like when it's on, they always just find the chains.
They find just enough yardage for a first down, right?
A couple of years ago when he was in Philly,
it just always felt like the Eagles were either right at the chains,
or they were at that one yard mark to run that quarterback sneak, right?
And they just move the chains and you see six, seven, eight,
10-minute drives, right?
And I think the combination of Richardson not quite grasping that yet and
being too home run reliant and then you know we saw it in the Packer game where the Packers went
out and ran the ball and held time possession those two things in tandem are very very dangerous
if you can't get off the field and then you can't sustain drives it is their biggest problem I think
for me they can't right now they're not sustaining drives in the passing game I think their offensive
line looks good and I think Jonathan Taylor looks good, but
he has to be more content to move the change just to sustain drives and help his defense as well.
Yeah, that playing from behind really kind of reared its head on Sunday because they got
Jonathan Taylor going and then boom, he's about the only thing that's working against Green Bay.
And then here comes the fourth quarter and they want to just go really pass heavy. And for whatever reason, they decide Trey Sermon is the guy for that.
I mean, I know JT kind of has his flaws there, but it totally removed their most effective player
out of the offense. So I absolutely see what you're saying there. And then, so it's very big play reliant. Is there anything like there's just not those short
completions in there to keep rhythm and things like that. Josh Downs hasn't been in there,
of course, yet. It looks like maybe he'll be back next week. But outside of Downs,
is Pittman maybe the key to getting those short quick one completions and just moving the chains?
Absolutely. He was one of the best receivers in football with it last year.
I think even when they had Gardner Minshew playing, one of the best things Shane Steichen did was just center all of his RPO stuff in the entire short passing game around Pittman.
And we're not seeing that as much, both in design and with just Richardson executing it when it is there.
That was, I think,
the most dangerous part of the Colts offense last year was where is Michael Pittman going to line
up because he could line up anywhere on the field. And then just how do you defend him when he's
just, again, the goal is to just get first downs. And there's not many receivers in football that
did it better than Michael Pittman last year. I think he's the guy that they really need to get
going. Not necessarily for home run plays,
right? We have Alec Pierce for that. We have Richardson's legs for that. We know they can
hit home runs, but you can't be solely relying on that. So Pittman last year was one of the best
receivers in football at making plays on throws under 10 yards, right? Those short passes that
he turns into first downs. They need to get back to that and they need Richardson to get to that
in the way that Minshew did last year. Because Minshew last year, he didn't make a ton of big throws,
but the theme holds. He just got first downs, and very, very often that was Michael Pittman.
So they do need to get him going. Absolutely. They got to figure something out pretty quick.
So coming up, guys, here in a minute, we're going to talk about, you know, there are problems on
both sides of the ball. Some of it can be fixed and some of it cannot.
But let's kind of look on the brighter side a little bit and see what maybe can be fixed,
hopefully pretty quickly.

Game time.
What time is it?
It's game time.
All right, we are back.
And let's talk about some things that the Colts can actually improve upon and fix.
Obviously getting some guys back from injury will help Josh Downs. That'll help the Forrest Buckner. We don't know how long he's going to be out. Julian Blackman, hopefully he's back out. So
you can't make guys return easily, but whether it's schematics or just, you know, fitting some,
some wrinkles into the scheme, both offense and defense Dalton, Dalton what are some things you're seeing
where you're like god if they can just do this then they'll probably have a little easier of a
time I think the simple part with the offense is they just have to reel it in look right now
Anthony Richardson's average depth of target is 14 yards which is the highest in in football okay
and last year I think the highest in football was just under around 12 okay so he's just there's
again there's too many too many home run shots being taken, right?
Shane Steichen's offense in the passing game
is a lot about RPOs and one read throws
and throws that move the chains.
And he just has to do that
because that average depth of target
also makes your accuracy tougher.
And right now the only quarterback
with a higher uncatchable pass rate
per our quarterback charting is Bryce
Young and Bryce Young just got benched so now amongst starting now amongst starting quarterbacks
it's Anthony Richardson they need to reel they need to find a way to reel him in whether it's
running the ball more and getting more on just easier stuff like bootlegs and and just reel him
in on offense because the home run or bust thing is not going to work for them he's not accurate
enough in the underneath game to move the chains.
You saw what happened against the Packers.
It's exactly the offense, the time of possession difference.
The Packers have the ball for 40 minutes and the Colts less than 20.
The time of possession difference in that game was just as much on the offense
as it was the defense.
And I know the defense didn't play well, especially up front,
but it's equal parts because they're not sustaining drives. Offensively, reel them in, get Pittman more involved and move the
chains as opposed to swinging for the fences that much. Defensively, they have had issues at corner
other than Kenny Moore in the slot for a couple of years now. And with Juju Brents out for the
season, it's a serious problem. It's the problem on this team that I'm not sure they can fix.
But what they need to do is rush the passer better, right?
Guys like Quidi Pei and Leatu Latu and even DeForest Buckner up front.
This pass rush has been maybe the most underwhelming part of the team right now.
For me, they're just not getting home.
Now, this past week, they only saw 14 pass attempts.
I think only 18 or 19 dropbacks.
It was going to be tough to rush the passer with
little opportunity, and they were getting gashed in the run game. But even in the first game,
there wasn't a ton of pressure on C.J. Stroud, and they're just not getting home. And if they're
not getting home, that's the one thing that worries me. The Colts don't have the cornerbacks
right now to hold up against the elite receivers. You saw what Nico Collins did, and even Malik
Willis completed 12 of his 14 passes. So the corner thing, I don't know that that can be fixed, but there's other parts of
their defense that need to start playing better. Obviously, the run defense to put them in better
situations, but I was expecting more out of this pass rush early in the season.
Yeah, it's been kind of an issue, of course. Week one, I felt like it was fine. Their sole
purpose was to rattle cj stroud
enough so that he didn't kill them they were going to live if the if the run game did and it turns
out everything was kind of bad stroud you know made enough of the opportune throws to get it
going but that time of possession is a trend now too because it was 40 20 in advantage of houston
as well uh but looking at the offense again, just real quick. So obviously Josh Downs,
their normal slot receiver being in there, winning those quick matchups is great, but
how important, and especially for Richardson's completion percentage and just establishing
rhythm, how easily could they inject maybe some more like design screens in there? Not just like
quick dump offs and panic moves, but actual design screens where
there's blockers ahead. And whether it's Jonathan Taylor or if they love Trey Sermon or Tyler
Goodson, one of those guys can just kind of grind it out there. Well, it should be incredibly easy.
And it's odd to me that through two games, they've only run three screen passes. And I would think
those are the type of things in this offense that you want Richardson to just get those easy throws and get in a rhythm and get your
weapons, the ball, right?
I mean, the Colts have a good stable of weapons.
When you look at Pittman, Pierce, Downs when he's healthy, Taylor,
like there is enough to work with here, especially, and Josh Downs,
like you mentioned, he should help them after the catch.
He's good after the catch, right?
So I think it's odd to me that you're right.
They're not creating enough easy throws for Richardson.
And again, falling behind can take you out of that a little bit,
especially when you fall behind by two scores, say, early in the game
like they did against Green Bay.
But they do.
They need to create just more plays that move the chains.
And I'm very surprised they've only run three screens through two games
because I would just think that they – just Steichen's offense,
that's how it works when it's
really rolling is is just enough enough and then we'll take shots when the safeties come up and
they got to defend everything in the flat and all that stuff I I would I would do that exact thing
just create more easy throws screens and RPOs for Richardson get him in a rhythm first and then let
him use the big arm when the safeties come up yeah I think that's the move as well because some of the
some of the things they're relying on just aren't working.
Like he's targeted 80 Mitchell quite a bit and their chemistry just is not
there yet.
They're not on the same wavelength.
And I feel like that's just one example of them not wasting plays,
but just ones they're relying on probably a little too heavily.
And then defensively,
like we mentioned teams are just kind of chewing up the clock on them.
They're,
they're able to run at will and to a certain point, like the schematically in coverage, it almost hasn't even been able to
rear its ugly head yet because teams are running so much. So a couple of things here, like
schematically, is there anything you think they could do to combat the run a little better?
Because right now it seems like guys are just losing their matchups and then in coverage.
I mean, obviously Gus Bradley is known for being a little set in his ways
and really sticking to his guns.
But is there anything you would tweak about a secondary that's kind of missing some bodies
that you think they could improve upon a little bit?
I think first up front, they just have to be better.
And the Packers threw a whole different game plan at them in the run game
than they thought they were getting.
Because LaFleur is known as that Shanahan zone run kind
of guy. And he came out completely away from that and ran a lot of power and counter and
different things. So I think there is an element to this Packer game where LaFleur just came up
with an excellent game plan. Up front, I'll tell you, I think they just have to be better.
They're better players than this. DeForest Buckner is better than this. Leotu Latu even
as a rookie is better than this. Quidi Pee, we thought maybe a breakout was coming this year. They just need
to be better up front. The one thing I would do in the secondary, and it's kind of weird to tweak
this because sometimes it's based on formation, but what you saw a lot in that Texans game was
Nico Collins getting isolated against a really good matchup. And there's going to be a lot of
receivers that feel like they have a really good matchup
one-on-one when they face the Colts, right?
They need to make sure that they're not leaving guys on an island.
And even in zone coverage, it can happen.
And the Colts are a heavy zone coverage team.
But through formations and through just different motions and things like that, and just teams
isolating matchups, right?
It's why Nico Collins had such a big week.
And he had a big week against the Bears, too, for the same reason. You get guys like that on that level, one-on-one
matchups against this secondary, it's going to be a problem. So I think there just needs to be
a better mentality of, like, they don't have to blitz more. I wouldn't do that. They need their
D-line to play better. They just need to gut up and play better. Honestly, they need to rush to
pass their better, but they need to make sure that they're not leaving these guys on the
outside in one-on-one situations.
Especially when you have Kenny Moore in the slot
as really your best player,
that's a guy who maybe in the slot can handle
a one-on-one, but on the outside
they need to make sure there's help at all
times because especially in that first game,
too many times where Nico Collins
was isolated on somebody, even though it's zone
coverage, when you have zone coverage,
it's going to lean towards the side with more receivers.
And that backside guy is going to be an issue, right?
They can't leave the team's best receiver one-on-one with somebody
because they just don't have the cornerbacks.
They're not equipped for that.
I think, no, there's no better example of that
than last week against the Packers.
Again, you want to be able to stop a guy like Malik Willis,
who doesn't really have any positive track record in the league.
He throws up a dime down the right sideline,
and the receiver just picks it off of Jalen Jones' head.
Like, just it could not have been more easily prevented,
and it was just like, wow.
One-on-one situations.
It's just not where they're going to thrive right now.
Nope.
Not at all.
All right,
guys.
So coming up here,
we're going to,
again,
we're going to try and look on the bright side of things and some guys who

All right, let's close this thing out with some positive vibes.
So again, in general, 0-2, the offense is rough, the defense is rough,
but there have been some rare bright spots, Dalton.
So when you look at this Colts team, it doesn't even have to be a surprise player at all,
but who has really stood out and said, okay, this is something that is going right for the Colts so far?
I'm just going to give you actually the whole unit.
Those five guys on their offensive line, even though it looks like they're struggling on offense
and they're trying to find it with Richardson and everything else, those guys have been spectacular.
That unit, they're the second best offensive line per our overall grades right now behind the Saints. And that front five of Ryman, Nelson, Kelly, Fries, and Smith, they have just been terrific.
They are the sole reason, not the sole reason, but the biggest reason, I should say,
that there can be an offensive turnaround because when you have an offensive line that good,
you just go, okay, we don't have to worry about the blocking.
We don't have to worry about Richardson being under pressure or anything like that. We just need to get better
in our execution at quarterback and at the skill spots, right? So that's the first part is this is
back to being one of the best offensive lines in football so far through two weeks. And then,
and you know, and piggybacking off of that, Jonathan Taylor looks good, right? 5.4 yards
per carry so far this year. That's really encouraging. If you said to anybody before the year, look, through a couple weeks,
you're going to have the second-best offensive line in football,
and Taylor's ripping off 5.4 yards per carry,
you would have thought the Colts were 2-0 instead of 0-2.
Honestly, that's the core of their team is those two things right there.
I do like Alec Pierce catching some deep balls
and making some things happen down the field.
I think that's a good element to have in their offense.
But the run game, they're going to win this.
They're going to win games with their run game, with their offensive line,
and their pass protecting well, too.
Their offensive line, Jonathan Taylor, Richardson working off the run game.
He's running for, I think, like nine yards a carry or something like that, right?
They're going to win with the run game.
Their offensive line can allow them to do that,
and then they just have to execute better around it.
So that would be the biggest,
because there's too many teams I look at in the league
where I just go, oh, their offensive line
just doesn't give them a chance.
Like teams like the Giants or the Jaguars,
like there's certain teams in the league right now
where I'm like, they can't block people
and it's not going to turn around.
The Colts very much can.
They have one of the best O-lines in the league
and that's my biggest reason for optimism. And so when you look at this thing, I think
there's probably more confidence the offense can turn it around or get a little more consistent or
better. The defense, I have real concerns for what's going to go on throughout the season,
because again, there's injuries and guys who we knew before or thought were pretty good or
effective just are not showing up.
And then again, you've got the problems in the secondary.
Do you think it's feasible for the Colts to just be a team that gets through the season trying to win shootouts?
No, I don't.
Because I don't think Richardson is equipped for that.
I don't think Richardson is equipped for that. I don't. I think the Colts are a team that needs to play better,
especially down the middle of their defense where their talent is.
It's safety at linebacker and on the inside, right?
Grover Stewart, DeForest Buckner,
and then you've got Franklin and Speed at linebacker.
They have talent up the middle of their defense.
Yes, they have issues at corner, but they need the rest of it to play better.
I don't think with their lack of cornerback production
and Richardson being such a low percentage passer,
they are not equipped to get in big shootouts like that,
like they did with Houston in week one.
They would rather play a game at the pace that they just played
with the Packers, but have it be the other way around,
where they're the ones dominating on the ground
and winning time of possession and doing all that.
They need to reel it in on offense.
This is not a team I would want playing in the 30s because the other problem, too,
is Richardson through two games has five turnover-worthy plays, right?
So at any point he could miss a throw or throw into double coverage
and it could go the other way, too, right?
It's kind of the baseball thing of like you hit a home run or you strike out.
That's kind of where Richardson's at right now, and it's very hard.
I don't like the idea of putting games on his shoulders,
between falling behind or just getting in shootouts.
I don't think that's where you want.
Because remember, he just made, what, only his sixth career start, seventh?
Yeah, sixth, yeah.
He's still essentially a rookie, even though he's not on paper.
So I don't think you want to put all that pressure on Richardson.
They need to get first downs.
That's the first thing they need.
They need to play better on defense, obviously,
but they need to get first downs on offense instead of trying to hit home runs
and not get into those big shootouts.
They need to start winning time of possession, winning the rushing battle,
using Richardson's legs as well.
And he just – look, I think it's an entire mentality.
I think Shane Steichen has to look at the mentality of this offense
and going, we just need to sustain drives and play our brand of football
because our O-line and Jonathan Taylor are certainly good enough to do that.
And we know Richardson's feet are good enough to do that.
They just have to – it almost feels mental with the offense.
Just reel it in.
Maybe he'll be a superstar at some point, but he's not right this minute,
and they have to accept that.
Yeah, I think the good news is in the very short term,
I think the game Sunday with Chicago should at least stay close.
It feels very Packers-ish to me.
The game probably won't get super out of reach,
but they have got to be able to
execute on offense this is a perfect this is this is the litmus test I actually think playing the
Bears in this game is it and the way they need to play them is very important I will tell you
right now the back seven especially the secondary for the Bears that's real they're the Bears
secondary right now is the best part of their team. They are really good. If you
think you're just going to go in and take downfield shots against Jalen Johnson and Kevin
Byard, Jaquan Brisker, and all these guys, that's not happening. If there is a game where the Colts
need to just line up and run the ball 45 times, it is this game because the Bears are more vulnerable
on the defensive line against the run. We saw the same thing for them against the Texans
where Mixon had some success before he got hurt.
Tennessee had success running the ball against them.
This is the game they need to line up and run the ball
and punch the Bears in the mouth.
Because if you challenge this secondary, it's going to be a problem.
And look, this is a game where Richardson,
Caleb Williams is kind of in the same boat.
Ball security is an issue right now.
This game is going to come down to turnovers and who's taking more chances
and maybe more unnecessary chances.
If the Colts are going to get back to their style of ball,
their identity behind this offensive line in this run game,
this is the game to do it because this is a dangerous secondary
that can win ball games.
I think that is encouraging.
It sounds like a good – I don't want to say like a philosophical reset game,
but just take a second and figure out what you can change. This is probably
a good opportunity for it. And that, that run game, I, they're just going to have to lean on
that so heavily until Anthony can work in some of those intricacies that don't have to be so
peak and valley, you know? Absolutely. Absolutely. And that's, this is a game.
This is the perfect game for it. If they don't do it in this game,
it could be a long year because again, I think it's a mentality thing.
I think Shane Steichen has to look at this Bears defense and go,
we have to out physical them. We have to play the long game with them.
We can't throw into the teeth of the secondary. And this is,
this is such a big game for Richardson.
You want to see him not force it because you can't force it against this Bears team.
Even the other night, their defense was really good.
Their secondary was really good against C.J. Stroud.
It was really good.
It won them the game against Tennessee.
It's the reason they have a win.
It's the reason they almost won the other night.
Their offense is figuring it out.
Caleb's trying to figure it out.
And it's another game, too.
I'll tell you, defensively, we're going to find out if their pass rush can be better
in this game because the Bears' pass protection has not been good through two weeks either.
So it's not just Caleb Williams.
The entire offensive unit hasn't been good.
Their front seven, the Colts' front seven has an opportunity to play better, and they
have an opportunity to reset the mentality on offense in this game.
Yeah, that's definitely good to hear
because I don't know how much more fans can take of...
0-3 is one thing, but being an ugly 0-3 is a completely other one.
