Starting point is 00:00:35 Make every moment more as playoffs wind down, the sports stop sporting like we want them to, but this summer, FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily. That's right. There's something for everyone every day all summer long. Visit FanDuel.com to get started. Hello, everyone. I'm Zach Hicks, your favorite film nerd over at HorseshoeHuddle.com. And I'm joined as always by the boots on the ground, Jake Arthur, who's actually he's at home today. So we won't hear any rooster jumping in and interrupting. I know we had a lot of fun with that today on socials and on everything related to the show. You do know what my dog Lucy is capable of, though. You do know that she is right here.
Starting point is 00:01:13 That's true. That's true. We don't have a rooster joining us today. We might have one of our dogs or you guys know how we are with this show. So we always appreciate you guys putting up with that stuff there. But no, we are here back talking Colts training camp yet again. And yeah, when it comes to today's show, you know, we're not on location. We are at our homes.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Jake is not at practice today. There's no practice. So we are going to mostly do more of like a recap and kind of talking about the state of a lot of these camp battles. We obviously went into training camp saying there were key battles at wide receiver two slash three. However, you really looked at that there. Free safety, cornerback two or three. Again, however you put that in your mind. Tight end, the entire room, we had no clue what was going on there and plenty other of big camp battles. So we're going to talk about those camp battles and then kind of recap exactly what's standing out so far.
Starting point is 00:02:06 So, Jake, I'm going to kick it to you for these camp battles here. The biggest one, obviously, on paper and the one that gets all the clicks, obviously, on our site, so we love it here, is the Alec Pierce and A.D. Mitchell. And again, I know a lot of it is fantasy football because people need to know who's going to get all the other targets after Josh Downs and Michael Pittman Jr. But when it comes to Pierce versus Mitchell, I know you went into detail a little bit on yesterday's show about it, but what can you really say about these two players? And do we have a bona fide X wide receiver that's going to get every single snap or is a little more nuanced than that? Yeah, I do think there's some nuance to the situation for sure. So Alec is a little more polished when it comes to, you know, practicing and the ins and outs and the daily minutia and consistency of being an NFL player.
Starting point is 00:02:55 And of course, when it takes a while for like rookies to earn playing time, you almost always hear from the coaching staff, like part of the reasoning is, you know, looking for consistency and just doing this and that, which not to say that 80 is not, but it's not enough yet to elevate himself over Pierce. And that's why we see Pierce more often making plays in 11 on 11s and just things like that. Like there's just some development that has to happen. Like I mentioned in one on ones, it basically is how superior is your size and athleticism. And in that 80, 80 dominates, you know, he, he does very well in one-on-one situations. But, you know, when it comes to, you know, the precision of route running and making your cuts
Starting point is 00:03:39 and your releases and stuff like that, Alec Pierce, this is year three going through an NFL program. So, I mean, Mitchell will get there eventually. And so I do still give the lead in this competition to Pierce. But with that said, the optics of it, it does look like the Colts are preparing for the Mitchell experience at
Starting point is 00:04:00 some point in the season. Like by the end of the year, I wouldn't be surprised if Mitchell is the guy who's out there a little more often, or at least is the bigger part of the passing game. Because he's such a good blocker, I think Alec will be hard to take off the field in general. Like, I don't think he's just going to be totally usurped. But, you know, he's playing special teams a lot more than I can ever recall him doing, which to me looks like, you know, you have some really good traits from the offensive side of the ball. Let's see what this looks like on special teams if you were to take a step back in playing time, you know, so to speak. So to me, it looks like they're kind of preparing for the day that Mitchell does hop above him on the depth chart, perhaps even this season.
Starting point is 00:04:46 But for now, I do think Pierce has the edge. Yeah, at the end of the day, both these guys are going to have a pretty serious role on this team. Whether it's one guy getting 80% of the snaps on offense, the other guy getting 20 or 50-50, these guys are going to be a part of the offense. And I don't think we're going to see it like last year, where unless an injury happened, the top three receivers of the Colts were getting every single snap on offense. And I don't think we're going to see it like last year where unless an injury happened, the top three receivers of the Colts were getting every single snap on offense. I do think it's going to be more of, hey, wide receiver four, whoever that's going to be, he can play for
Starting point is 00:05:12 us so we can get them on the field or Anthony Gould at wide receiver five. Hey, this guy can actually do some things for us. Let's get them on the field or heck, even Ashton Doolin at wide receiver six. We know he can do some things for us. He might even get on the field a little bit. So I do think we're going to see a little bit more rotation to keep receivers fresh and keep guys, you know, active on the offense. So I think either way with that one, we're going to see these guys playing a little bit. Let's get to the big shocker, though, and that's at free safety, where, you know, obviously we were not super high on this competition coming into camp.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Like we weren't saying that whoever wins this is going to be a star or anything like that. But we kind of settled that like, OK, this is going to be Nick Cross's job. It's likely going to be him all by himself. And if that doesn't work, they might go to the free agent market. But it's kind of seemed like it's a really close battle between Nick Cross and Ronnie Harrison, with obviously Ronnie Thomas second in there as well. What can you tell us about that free safety battle and are you feeling good about it right now Jake and I mean again I know we beat this topic to death all offseason but what are your thoughts on free safety right now I don't think there's a ton of reason for optimism
Starting point is 00:06:18 right now it looks like it's in the same spot it was when camp started. So Nick Cross sees the vast majority of the first-team reps, and then it feels like Ronnie Harrison comes in next, and then Rodney Thomas, and they get kind of the scraps of the first-team reps. And you're just not hearing about how confident or how much better any of these guys are looking. Like Gus Bradley got asked like twice about free safety the other day and never mentioned any names in his in his answers that's not great I mean they
Starting point is 00:06:51 have talked a little bit about Ronnie Harrison but it's when specifically asked and he's the most interesting case because of course his position changes he's never played free safety in the NFL for an extended period of time at at least. But it just seems like they still don't know who their free safety is. And if we're a week into training camp and you have three free safeties, then you probably don't have one. And so until we see otherwise, it feels like this is the position group that everyone says, hey, look, look, look, and it's going to blow up in their face. I mean, hopefully we're wrong.
Starting point is 00:07:23 I don't want that to be the case. I think all of these guys are plenty capable, and I don't even think it would be the end of the world if it was Ronnie Harrison. Like, he probably gives you the highest floor of the group, maybe. I know you don't think so. But, you know, with Nick Cross and Ronnie Thomas, neither of these guys in two years previous
Starting point is 00:07:42 has been able to take a firm grasp of their starting spot. Nick Cross earned it out of the gate as a rookie and was replaced within two weeks. Rodney Thomas took a big step back in year two from a pretty solid year one. So at this point, I just really don't know if the trust is there from the coaching staff. And that's not direct knowledge. That's just me putting the pieces together from stuff I see and hear around the team all the time. But I am no more intrigued by this group than I was to start camp. All right, let's move to some position battles that feel a little more solidified or at least you feel a little bit better about.
Starting point is 00:08:23 And that is the battle at cornerback two or cornerback three, however you look at it, the other outside corner when the Colts are in their base nickel sets. What can you tell us about Jalen Jones versus Dallas Flowers? And then at tight end, can you break down this position group at all? Because this is like a four to five man race right now. We have no clue who's going to win this one. So can you sort out both of those positions for us real quick, Jake?
Starting point is 00:08:45 And apologies. I know it sounds like the beat from Stan in the background here, but there is a storm. So apologies if I drop off. But so at cornerback right now, it just looks like Jalen Jones job to lose. I think I described it the other day as it's more so Jalen Jones job to lose than it is Dallas Flowers job to win. Like I think Jones would have to have some sort of huge problem or take some steep decline in play for Flowers to come in. But Flowers is doing well. Like, I've been pleased with what he's done. I just think, you know, it's going to take something big to switch that spot because
Starting point is 00:09:20 Jones earned it over the course of last year. Unfortunately, you don't want a guy to lose his job to injury, but it happens. And then as for tight end, I got to say, what we said, like if it was the top of the depth chart would be a problem, is. But it doesn't feel like a problem yet. So Kylan Granson and Mo Alleycox, they get a lot of the first team reps, but so does Drew Ogletree. Now, I will say in terms of roles, Mo feels a lot more like just a solely blocking guy.
Starting point is 00:09:53 He has had a couple receptions here and there, but Drew Ogletree and Kylan Granson, I feel like, have been more involved in the passing game. And Jelani Woods has worked his way up the depth chart as well. So, like're you're seeing some improvement from guys but I don't think it's enough yet for them to make wholesale changes at the position again we are only like a week through and about halfway through camp but even though it's Kylan and Mo getting a lot of the snaps with I I'll put Drew Ogletree on that as well but they're not going to run out like 13 personnel um I don't think it's a it doesn't feel dire yet you know I think they're going to
Starting point is 00:10:32 be very intentional about rotating guys in and out and then Will Mallory the bummer is he missed the last practice of course they're off today we'll see if he comes back but that was obviously an issue that plagued him throughout his rookie year, really starting in the offseason. Yeah, yeah, for sure. So we'll have to see with that battle, like what progresses with that one. But it does look like at least Drew Ogletree's up there, Granson's up there, and Jelani's working his way up. So like, not too concerned, obviously, with that one, like we are at free safety.
Starting point is 00:10:59 But that's all we have for the camp competition battles. Obviously, we could talk a little bit about backup running back and stuff, too, which we will in our next couple of segments. But to close out the show on our final two seconds, we're going to talk about guys who have stepped up and guys who just have to show more. They want to make this team by the end of training camp. But first, guys, are you a fan of Major League Baseball? Are you like me and just hoping the season ends as quick as possible? And maybe I can catch a couple of games, though, like on the way towards the end. I'm watching the Washington Nationals every single week. I love the Washington Nationals. I'm a big,
Starting point is 00:11:32 you know, Virginia sports guy when, you know, Indianapolis doesn't have any Virginia sport or any of those sports. So I go to my Nationals games when I can. All right, Jake, so we're doing stock up with this next segment here. Some guys
Starting point is 00:13:25 who have caught your eyes that, you know, this could be starters who just seem to be taking that next step in this training camp, or this can be bottom of the roster guys who maybe have a 1% chance of making the team, but are turning that 1% into a 2% or a 3% chance. That's what I'm waiting for, Jake, but you can probably touch on that later in this segment. Talk about the starters though, guys like Anthony Richardson, Josh Downs, who are really catching your eye so far, and are you big stock up at nearly the halfway point of training camp? Yeah, so Anthony Richardson, I won't spend a lot of time on that one because he's easily the guy we've spoken about the most, but he's done really well, obviously. He's shown the improvement,
Starting point is 00:14:03 the footwork, the mechanics. He's healthy with no restrictions on that shoulder. So the haters are in absolute shambles, but no him, him just showing up, showing improvement and getting chemistry, getting all the first team reps with this guys. That's big. Another starter,
Starting point is 00:14:19 Josh downs, you know, back during like the Andrew Luck era, when it felt like the star of every training camp was T.Y. Hilton. And it's like, well, duh, obviously it's what it feels like with Josh Downs. Just the little guy who's catching everything, who's making people look silly on the field. He's stretching the field like we saw him do with Anthony when they were out there in their rookie season. So that has been great. Not a starter, but another
Starting point is 00:14:46 receiver to go along with Josh Downs is Anthony Gould. Now you get some rookies who have like a really strong spring, but haven't really put it together in the summer. You know, A.D. Mitchell is a great example of that. Had a really strong spring, had all the highlight plays, but has just, you know, he's had a rookie summer. Like he's not super involved. Not the same for Anthony Gould. Now he's had kind of a niche role. Like he's been a big time deep threat. Joe Flacco loved him in the spring
Starting point is 00:15:19 and he's showing it again this summer. So Gould kind of like Jalen Jones last year has just been really solid throughout since joining the Colts. So that that's been really good to see. Yeah. I did write an article on, on Anthony Gould for horseshoehuddle.com. If you guys want to check that today.
Starting point is 00:15:37 And part of the reason why I wrote it is because if you look at the transcripts and I put the whole transcript in, in the article or whatever, Jim Bob Cooter, it was the longest quote ever about Anthony Gould it was a whole like it felt like Chris Ballard talked about Jalen Jones last offseason where if you even mention the guy's name you're gonna get just this long you know 10 paragraphs about the player um and yeah Anthony Gould man it was a lot of good things from Jim Bob Cooter I really I really recommend checking that out so you can see the full quote there.
Starting point is 00:16:07 And he really went into detail being like, yeah, you know, there are even some more plays on the field where the ball's going a little bit over his head or the timing's a little bit off. So just getting him more involved down the field, we're trying to take more shots down the field, and he's a big part of that. And I think Jim Bob Cooter even went to the extreme of saying, like, we're trying to find out how to get all these guys on the field and have a really fun, explosive offense this year.
Starting point is 00:16:28 And he knows he can be part of that. So I really think there's going to be a role for Anthony Kuhl this year. It might only be like 150 to 200 snaps, like nothing too crazy. But I think there's something there for him this year, especially if he continues this great camp that he's having. Yeah, honestly, the difference between me just saying he's had a really good camp and him being one of the biggest stars of camp is literally inches. There's been a couple deep balls that just haven't been quite on target.
Starting point is 00:16:59 And if he comes down with those for big touchdowns, he's who everyone is going to be talking about. Yeah, it's just the new NFL. It doesn't matter how side how big you are whatever as long as you have that speed and that quickness that he possesses and honestly he's more developed than what I thought like coming into the draft because I was watching him after the Colts took him it's like this guy can move a little bit like laterally and and break in and out of his routes really well very developed receiver and it's good to hear that we're seeing that so far in camp. But give me some of the lower end guys.
Starting point is 00:17:28 I know you have a couple more starters here as well, but who are some other guys in this roster that are really stepping out to you, Jake, in camp and really earning their way to playing time this next season? Yeah, so the obvious ones, you know, Tyquan Lewis and Laatu Latu getting the opportunity with Samson Ebicom going down. You know, they they're getting the extra reps and they're looking good doing it so that's again that's something we've talked about but some of the less heralded guys i think evan hull is separating himself in that third running back spot uh trey sermon haven't seen anything from him that doesn't indicate he's jonathan's direct backup uh but we see a lot of evan hull
Starting point is 00:18:04 and it hasn't been a perfect camp. Like he has had a couple drops and his calling card has been receptions. But, you know, he had those couple really big runs we talked about yesterday. And I just feel like he's proving a lot as a runner, which, you know, probably separates him from Tyler Goodson a bit because that's really all Goodson was used for last year. And like I mentioned, Goodson hasn't had the strongest camp either, had a couple, you know, didn't really connect with the squib kick recoveries the other day. So I think Hall is kind of separating himself a little bit. And then on the defensive side of the
Starting point is 00:18:41 ball, a couple of the depth linebackers, Jalen Carlisle. Obviously, he's a young guy who's gotten a lot of buzz, earned some first-team reps there at Will, which kicked EJ Speed over to Sam. That's a guy who's made a couple interceptions since the spring, kind of like I mentioned with Gould and Jalen Jones the year before. He's been solid ever since he got to Indy. He did miss yesterday's practice, of course, so we'll see if he's back tomorrow. And Liam Anderson, probably the biggest
Starting point is 00:19:09 dark horse that we're going to talk about here. He's gotten a lot of second team reps for Mike. And the last couple of years, we've heard Richard Smith and Gus Bradley and even Chris Ballard at opening day at camp talk about the competition at backup Mike. And, you know, we've seen Saguna Luby is very much, you know, I think Carlisle and Luby are there as linebackers, you know, three and four. But don't, don't sleep on Liam Anderson making the roster. Like if they feel he brings really strong special teams ability, they, I think they like what he can do at back at mike but if he can do special teams too like he might get on the roster awesome awesome we always love the dark horses there and
Starting point is 00:19:51 liam anderson will be our one this offseason hopefully it works out for us for the first time ever jake but but that's who we're going to be riding with this offseason uh but coming up guys we're going to transition over to guys that jake and just the team needs to see more of this offseason also if we have time at the end i'll get to some of your guys that Jake and just the team needs to see more of this offseason. Also, if we have time at the end, I'll get to some of your guys' questions in the comments, because you guys are leaving some good questions. I'll leave some time at the very end for Jake to answer those as well. But first, I love sports. I love them so much. I never want them to stop. But as the playoffs wind down, we get fewer and fewer games. And the sports just aren't
Starting point is 00:20:22 sporting like I want them to. But FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want. All I have to do is open the app and dream up any bets that I have in the mood that I'm in. And this summer, FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily. That's right. There's something for everyone every day all summer long. So head over to FanDuel.com and start making the most out of your summer. FanDuel, official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball. All right, Locked on Colts.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Every day as we're back with our training camp star aficionado here. Man, I almost landed that word right there, Jake. We're here talking Colts training camp. Jake is actually at home. He's not at camp today because the Colts did not have practice. But we are recapping exactly guys who stood out, guys who are in position battles and where they stand in that. And now guys where they need to kind of show a little bit more
Starting point is 00:21:13 through the second half of training camp. So Jake, I know you already mentioned a couple of these guys in the last segment, but what are players that really stand out to you as needing to have big second halves of training camp to either earn a significant role in this team or to simply make the team at the end of camp? Yeah, so I will throw Tyler Goodson in there because we've seen he's capable of making big plays in an actual NFL game. The Steelers had some good players out there in the game that him and Trey Sermon killed the Steelers defense.
Starting point is 00:21:45 So we know he's capable of more. The Colts did really like him last year. So we'll see if he can kind of close that gap again between him and Evan Hall. And then Dio Adengbo and Raekwon Davis kind of for different reasons. So Dio Adengbo has missed like the last two and a half practices, I think, with that calf injury. And they need him to play. And I would count on him to be a starter right now. With Samson Ebicom out, I would have Dio being a starter, but he's been out for a bit. And I don't think it's supposed to be much longer. Like earlier in the week, I think Mike Chapel said he should only be out like a week more. So hopefully he gets back soon because right now Tyquan Lewis and Laatu Laatu are getting all those
Starting point is 00:22:34 snaps. And we know that Lewis can bring a lot of productivity in a small sample size, but if Laatu Laatu, if he looks like a stud and just takes a stranglehold on this why would you not make him the starter like that's your rookie fifth uh first round pick right and i mean if if he looks every bit the part and is killing guys like why would he not earn that huge role so dino dingo is gonna have a role in the defense no matter what i'm not concerned about that but the fact that he's not there and these other guys he's directly competing with for snaps are there and doing well. Got to see him get back out there.
Starting point is 00:23:10 And I will say I hate to even be doing this about injuries because it's not like get back out there and shake this injury off. It's just it puts them at a disadvantage, obviously. Which brings me to my next guy, Raekwon Davis. This is for the reason of they need him they really need him um like i mentioned the other day it's great that tave and brian is getting some practice reps it knows now so he's not just thrown into it uh but they need raekwon davis bad like he can back up buck he can back up grover um if he's out there then it allows the colts to see a little bit more
Starting point is 00:23:46 of what ade can do um because right now tave and brian is just kind of playing the role of veteran who i from a colts perspective a veteran who we like and we think we can depend on that isn't necessarily shared by all the fans, including Zach Hicks. Yeah, they need Raekwon Davis out there so that they can get guys in more defined roles where they're supposed to normally be. Yeah, yeah, for sure. I completely agree. I mean, Raekwon Davis, his value goes up every time he's not on the field, though. So maybe it's smart for him just to sit out all the training. He'd probably hold out for a bigger contract honestly by the end of trading camp yeah but uh we're gonna get your quick thoughts on uh you have michael pippen jr in here then you have something to say about two units on on the team as well and then we'll get to a couple of the comments we'll get out of here
Starting point is 00:24:37 and just answer some questions but what do you have to say about uh pit and and these also these uh these two position groups yeah so i again I again, I'll preface this. I don't want these guys to be considered stocked down. It's just stuff I want to see changed or improve. But Pittman Jr. in a couple of consecutive days has had some bad drops. They're really uncharacteristic that if he makes those, it injects a ton of energy into the offense and practice as a whole. But they're just in a game. they're drive killers. And, you know, it's a, it's a problem in a game, but he's got great hands normally. I mean, he's had some drops before in his career that don't look great. And that's what some people can remember at times, but,
Starting point is 00:25:16 you know, those ones that you got to have, you know, come down with them. The tight ends, please stay healthy. Hopefully Will Mallory comes back pretty soon, but they've done a good job of that this, this summer, but something they, yeah, knock on wood, of course, but something they've always seemingly done at least the past few summers is make big plays like Jelani Woods and Drew Ogletree as rookies. They were just out there making big play after big play, winning contested catches downfield and this and that.
Starting point is 00:25:48 There have been one or two big catches from the tight ends, but we obviously know that they can make really big plays. So, you know, let's see those kind of make a comeback. You know, you're healthy. That's great. But let's see more of your potential now. And then last in the secondary, I have been asked a lot of times, are the quarterbacks so successful this summer because of the secondary or the offense is just good? And the answer is yes to all of it. I think. Symbiotic relationship, you know, obviously they factor each other for sure.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Yeah. Like i know everybody on the offensive side of the ball is excited about what they can be this year and like we can see the like the talent is obviously there um but are they taking advantage of a secondary that just lacks the the juice or you know it could be a little bit of both. I don't know. So if the secondary just can, like, limit some of those big plays, that would be great. You know, now I will say I never fault a defender when he's in good coverage and the receiver just beats him. Like, that just happens. You know, you were in the right place. The guy just is probably stronger, more athletic, better hit, whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:27:04 I think if you're in good coverage like that's cool but like don't get burned that like the miscommunications i haven't really noticed many of those this this summer so far like we saw throughout last season where you know what coverage are we in is there safety help this like that stuff can't happen so you know just just limit the big plays and then we'll get a better idea of what is the culprit of the offense's passing success yeah yeah look if you ask me from the offensive standpoint this offense is clicking it's going to be elite it's perfect this year if you ask me from the defensive standpoint look half these are
Starting point is 00:27:39 sacks anyway the defender is just not finishing the route like just not covering all the way through that's all this is here with some quick questions for you jake just some updates on a couple players before we get out of here uh jd mba pastor is asking about eric johnson and atatomi atabore how they looked i know there's only been one padded practice so it's hard to really like fully say but how these guys look and and i kind of agree with what uh jd mba is saying here where it's like only maybe one of these guys makes the roster like so one of these guys look and and i kind of agree with what uh jdmba is saying here where it's like only maybe one of these guys makes the roster like so one of these guys has to stand out here in training camp i agree i think probably only one of those guys makes it and my money would be on ade you
Starting point is 00:28:15 know it's only his second season and they knew he was probably gonna be someone they needed to work on for a couple years um but he has made at least one nice run stop during the 11s, but he really stood out that one day in padded practices during one-on-ones. You probably remember me saying that dude is powerful, and he has a heck of a bull rush. So he's still developing as a player, but if he can get that bull rush down,
Starting point is 00:28:39 that can be what he leans on initially to win matchups. Johnson, I'll be honest i haven't i just haven't really noticed much from him yet yeah that's par for the course i think at this point in his career and i do think ultimately like you said if the colts ended up taking one or picking one by the end of camp i think we kind of know who they're going to go with the more upside younger player more again could be a better pass rusher probably already is a better pass rusher uh so we'll have to see there especially when they both have a certain other player in front of them on the depth chart that doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon uh we do have one more question
Starting point is 00:29:14 though and it's obvious it's always my favorite question here yeah how's ashton dillon looking how's ashton dillon look at like we always need the ashton dillon update how is our boy ashton looking out there, Jake? Yeah, I mean, just steady Eddie. He doesn't really drop the ball much. He's probably not quite as involved in the passing game as he has been in the past during 11-on-11s, but he did make the best catch of camp so far.
Starting point is 00:29:40 That day when, I think it was the day before padded practice, it was a one-on-one, and it was a deep ball down the right side. And it was when he, you know, jumped on Daryl Baker and basically wrote him like a pony down to the ground while making the catch. So Ashton Doolin, no one has topped him on reception of the summer yet. Oh yeah. Ashton Doolin, the man who makes difficult catches look difficult and easy catches look difficult as well. We love Ashton Doolin, the man who makes difficult catches look difficult and easy catches look
Starting point is 00:30:06 difficult as well. We love Ashton Doolin so much. It's our guy. It's our guy. All right, Jake, you want to roll us out of here? Yep.
