Starting point is 00:00:00 The Colts hosted the first of two days of joint practices with the Falcons on Wednesday, and the Colts passing offense was on fire. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, welcome to Locked on Colts on the Locked On Podcast Network. I am your host, Jake Arthur, the Indianapolis Colts beat writer for Roundtable Sports. And today we are talking about the 13th and penultimate training camp practice for the Colts.
Starting point is 00:00:42 On Wednesday, they hosted the Atlanta Falcons for the first of two joint practice sessions. And I'll get it next reviews, but overall very encouraging for the passing offense. Lots of window dressing to do here real quick, though, by the way. So let's start with just some injuries. Obviously, Alec Pierce is not yet ready to go. he did not practice. Does sound like he's looking better, getting closer in his rehab there. Keenan Allen, who the Colts just signed, he was not ready yet. It does sound like he'll practice a little bit, at least in individual drills like position stuff on Thursday. Anthony Gould,
Starting point is 00:01:21 the wide receiver. He's missed the last three practices with a groin injury. Mooney Ward missed the last four with a back injury. Offensive tackles Luke Tanuda with a knee and Nolan Rucci, we don't know that one. They've been out for a bit as well. Three practices. Tyler Warren did leave early with a groin injury or a ductor injury more specifically, which Jordan Schultz reported last night. Doesn't sound like it's going to keep him out all that long.
Starting point is 00:01:51 He just, you know, Warren kind of came out of the sideline, you know, lame a little bit, limping a little bit, reaching at his upper right thigh, went out to the medical area, got an ice wrap took it off maybe after about like 15 minutes or so and then watched the rest of practice from the styling so i think he'll be fine doesn't sound like a serious thing uh dj giddens though he had missed like five or six practices with a hamstring injury he participated in position work and then came out uh it looked to me like he probably reagorated that same hamstring looked like he was kind of grabbing at the back of his right leg so he left did not return. So yeah, Kenan Allen, just real quick, not injured or anything. He's just ramping up.
Starting point is 00:02:35 They're going to get him a little bit involved Thursday is the plan. Shane Steichen said they'll really get him involved next week. I don't expect to see him in the preseason. You know, they have two preseason games left. Really no starters are going to play this Saturday against the Falcons unless it's the young guys like AJ Halsey, maybe, C.J. Allen, those young guys. Next week, they say they're going to have some starters play. We'll see how that goes, but I don't know that we'll be ready to see Keenan Allen quite yet. So let's talk about the quarterbacks and their performance here real quick against the Falcons on Wednesday. Overall, I charted the three quarterbacks, three Colts quarterbacks, in 11 on 11s of going 28 of 31 passing. That is just incredible.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Daniel Jones was 15 of 15, Riley Leonard, 10 of 13, and Anthony Richardson, three of three. So with Jones, he had four completions each to Josh Downs and Ashton-Doulin. Both those players had really solid days, both in one-on-ones and during the 11-on-11 sessions. Josh Downs specifically had two enormous plays during 11-on-11s. The first one, Jones tossed a ball out to him, maybe like 25 or so yards downfield to the left side. One of the Falcons linebackers jumped up and tipped it, and then it still continued on the kind of trajectory. to downs. He picked it up out of the air, sprinted the rest of the way down the left sideline for a touchdown. I put it about 65 yards. And then later, Jones found downs on a deep post for maybe
Starting point is 00:04:09 40 or so yards right up the middle. Big completion. Now, there was a defensive, a Falcons defensive back just camping there and probably would have killed Josh Downs in a game. But, you know, in practice, they're not going to be crushing each other like that. So a completion is a completion. A couple really big plays from Downs. He looked really good out there. Route running really, really crisp, especially in the one-on-ones. Riley Leonard, again, 10 of 13. He got three sessions with the second team offense.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Remember, he is going to start on Saturday against the Falcons and play throughout the first half. And then he'll give way to Anthony Richardson, who's going to play the rest of the second half. Richardson, again, was three of three. He got one session with the starters. So coming up, guys, that was the quarterbacks and kind of the injury update. We're going to go ahead and get to the rest of the offense as well as some of the defenders
Starting point is 00:05:07 that really stuck out here in our quick little update on day one of joint practices with the Falcons. What's going on, everybody? My name is Ross Jackson, host of the Lockdown at Saints podcast. And today's Lockdown episode is brought to by our friends at Basque and Lather. I've been using Basque and Lather's all natural, 100% organic hair care products for my beard for a couple of years now. And it's been a lifesaver because I used to have some bad beard care habits. I'm talking over-the-counter shampoo and the beard type stuff that created this brittle, scratchy and uncomfortable beard that I just had to wear around all the time. But now the
Starting point is 00:05:43 game done change. Thanks to Baskin Lather, I got their beard care starter kit, which gave me shampoo, conditioner, oil balm, and their hair growth stimulator formula as well. And now my beard is full. It's soft but strong and the confidence is on 10 and it's all thanks to Basque and Lather. Explore viral bestsellers and products of healthier hair of all types from Basque and Lather. We are talking about the rest of the cast of characters from the Colts day one performance against the Atlanta Falcons and joint practice. It was the Colts 13th practice of training camp. Their final one is later today, 3 p.m. practice number 14. It's the second day of the joint practices, you know, I'll be out there.
Starting point is 00:07:45 And I'll have another big recap for you. So as good as the offensive passing game was, the run game was, dare I say, cheeks. It was not good. especially when they tried to run off the right side behind Jalen Travis at right tackle. It just felt like there were Falcons front seven guys just kind of camping in the backfield. Really got very little accomplished in the run game. We'll see how that transpires. I'm not going to act like Jalen Travis has had a spotless summer because he certainly hasn't. But I think what he showed at the end of last year in actual games was a lot more.
Starting point is 00:08:26 more promising than some of the moments we've seen out here during training camp. So it's definitely something we want to keep an eye on. I don't think he's going to have some big regression or anything. I actually think he's going to play pretty well when the season gets here. But there is a young player who needs to get more reps experience on the line, and it's pretty clear who it is. During one-on-ones with the Colts receivers versus Falcons Corners, I had the Colts winning that one heavily, a couple of the big standouts in that one.
Starting point is 00:09:01 I already mentioned Josh Downs did really well. Lequan Treadwell, I think, converted each one of his opportunities there. Him and Eli Pancold both had deep touchdowns for about 40 yards in those one-on-ones. So the Colts really handily won that one. So if the Colts receivers won their one-on-ones, I would say the Falcons defensive line won their one-on-ones. there was some kind of ugly moments. There was three reps in a row. Quentin Nelson, Tanner, Bordellini, and Matt Gonzalez,
Starting point is 00:09:33 where the Falcons just whipped them bad. Now, Nelson did rebound later to have just a really staunch effort and locked up his next guy. But those ones were kind of ugly. I think the biggest Colts standouts in this one were Berenhardt Reimann and Jalen Farmer. I thought they looked best in the one-on-ones. Ryman specifically was matched up with former Colts edge guy, Samson Ebbecom, quite a bit.
Starting point is 00:10:00 And I don't want to put my words into, to, you know, describe Ebukom, you know, I don't want to speculate where his headspace was, but it felt like Ryman made him quit a couple times. It's like, Ebukom would get up in there. Ryman would clearly have the thing shut down and then Evicon would just stop the rep. seemed like. It was odd to see, I'll be honest, because Abbycom was always such a high-energy, high-effort player here. But Ryman definitely got the better of him on Wednesday. And then Farmer was just so strong. And I thought his lateral agility was really good. There was a Falcons defensive tackle that kept trying to like spin past him. And it was just like he was spinning in place.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Like Farmer had him absolutely locked down. It was really good. Defensively, Uh, Justin Wally, uh, took Tua Tongue Viloa for a house call, had a pick six on him late in the day, uh, an 11 on 11 session where it was like a move the ball period.
Starting point is 00:11:03 We're supposed to be a kind of a live game simulation, um, to a, through a pass out to the left flat to Drake London. And, uh, Wally was there to, to just jump the route and went the other way with it.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Really good play by him. Got a huge reaction from the crowd, uh, and all of the, the Colts. Cause those ones are really, neat to see because in practice we're used to seeing like it's the Colts offense versus the Colts defense and then like you know after every big play one half of the team is really excited right but in an instance like this where the defense is on the field against the Falcons offense the Colts offense is watching their defense now so when a big play like that happens with Wally the entire 90 man roster and all the coaches and everyone goes crazy as well as everyone in the stands so that's a really fun environment. to be around. I'm hoping there's more big plays today because it's it's just the atmosphere is really
Starting point is 00:11:58 really cool. Bejohn Robinson not from this planet I would say um my god that that guy does incredible things that just looks so easy to him like if you or I tried it we would get severely injured or it would go poorly it just looks so routine for him like that's the first time I've seen him in person and he's unreal uh there was There was a play at the near the end where, you know, we all know too, his arm's not great. He threw a ball out just to dump off to Bijan. It was too low.
Starting point is 00:12:35 But Bejohn just like stuck his left hand down and scooped it so seamlessly while not breaking stride at all. I was like, that was such like a difficult looking play. And he made it look so easy. It was, it was unreal. And then let's move on to special teams real quick. The Colts did do some more kicking. and more, we got more separation here from Blake Groupie versus Spencer Schrader.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Groupie was 5 of 5. Schrader was 3 of 4. Schrader's only miss was a 54-yarder that he hooked left, as has been kind of customary throughout the entire offseason. So at this point now, throughout the offseason, starting in mandatory minicamp to now, including joint practices, including the one preseason game, Groupie is at 90.4% on field goals and Schrader is at 68.6. So a bit of a gap there.
Starting point is 00:13:32 You know, we've kind of talked about that. I don't know how much ground Schrader can possibly make up unless he goes absolutely nuclear in the games and Groupie just breaks down. But I think this point Schrader is really just kind of putting good tape. out there or trying to put good tape out there for his next team. I think it would be, you want the best opportunities for him, but if he's kicking that low of a percentage in practice, then there's a possibility he could even like stick around to the Colts practice squad until like another team comes calling during the season and needs to fill a spot. If he keeps kicking well in the preseason games, maybe he could catch on somewhere,
Starting point is 00:14:19 have some trade value or a team could pick him up off the waiver wire. But it seems like he maybe needs a little time to get this wide left thing figured out. And if the Colts want to give him a spot on the practice squad until he does figure that out, and then move him to a team where the kicking situation is worse, and that's great. I mean, Schrader is a great guy and he's really talented. You just hate to see this happen because he's recovering from an injury. So, you know, they've showed him kind of a lot of grace there. So we'll see how it kind of transpires with the kicking game.
Starting point is 00:14:52 You know Zach will be here to break it all down for you. That is it for today, everybody. Again, the Colts' final practice of training camp is today at 3 p.m. Eastern. It is another joint practice with the Falcons. And then the two teams will have their preseason game on Saturday afternoon at 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
