Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones has another outstanding day as Anthony Richardson struggles.
Let's get to it.

On today's show, we are live on location in Indiana.
Both of us here in Indiana here.
We're going to be doing our typical training camp rundown.
The Colts had practice last night from 8 p.m.
Until 10 p.m.
A lot of team practicing here, like 11 on 11s, full team drills from the first team,
second team, and even the scout team got out there for two different series out there.
So we're going to do our normal rundown guys for day.
seven of training camp, talk quarterbacks, talk offense, and talk defense.
Before we get into the quarterbacks, Jake, we had a couple of injury updates.
Sauce Gardner and Derek Nadi both returned to practice after very brief absences,
but we did have a few new guys on the injury list.
C.J. Allen was out yet again today with practice.
Now, in the past, it was a calf injury.
This time is a hamstring injury, according to Shane Steichen, so we'll see further updates on that.
Hunter Woller and DJ Giddens both remained out with their nagging injuries.
Lequan Treadwell was out after taking a nasty fall like late in last practice.
He's out with a hamstring injury as well.
Tim Smith and Eli Panckel both also missed practice last night.
But Jake, let's get into some of the quarterback play.
What did you see from Daniel Jones last night?
You have the charting on here.
And I want to say that he took like 30 pass dropbacks across all of 11 on 11s last night.
through 27 passes out of it.
So a lot of action for QB1.
So what did you see from him last night?
Yeah, I think the mobility was absolutely there.
We saw him take off on a few scrambles.
Previously, we had seen him just racing a defender to the right sideline trying to beat him there.
He actually went up the gut this time, you know, going into no man's land where anything can happen.
Certainly not in practice, but in a game that kind of is something.
I would say that is maybe another mental checkoff he could add to his list.
there. So he looks really fast. I mean, I don't know if we're going to need to see it on TV and
kind of compare that to last year or whatever, but he's moving around really well, I think you
could say. Yeah. Passing the ball just was surgical throughout the night. I thought his timing and
accuracy was there. The way he throws guys open or like throws to spots along the sideline and
lets his guys go get it, it's, it's really, really refreshing to watch. And then when he leaves the
field and then the rest of the cast of characters kind of comes on. You're like, oh, well,
we're going to kind of experience some hiccups here. Maybe the efficiency in the offense is going
to take a dip. But really good stuff. I thought he leaned on the guys that he needed to.
Not even just so much Tyler Warren of Ashton Doolin had like five catches. Nick Westbrook
Aquino, five as well. So I think he's doing a good job at leaning into the guys who are kind of taking
advantage of certain matchups. But I think he also understands certain roles and like how other guys
win. Like Westbrook Aquina, he throws him a lot of stuff where he's able to box out defenders and
uses his frame to get passes. You see a lot of Ashton Doolin gets a lot of stuff kind of on shorter
stuff along the sideline, but also with room to run as well. So I think he's really kind of
accentuating the strengths of the guys around him. Yeah, no, for sure. It was, uh,
I think the biggest takeaway for Jones last night was just the overall command and the accuracy that he had with the first team.
And to remind you guys, like, Alec Pierce was not out there.
They weren't rolling with their full strength on offense because they didn't have Pierce.
And they still looked really good overall moving the football.
They ran a lot of different situations.
One was like just moved the ball around the 50 yard line, see how many yards you can get.
They had a situation backed up on their own 10 yard line.
They had a red zone.
They had, you know, under two minutes type of drill.
they did all these different situations, and Jones looked good across the board,
and pretty much every single one of them, got them out of their own shadow, their own goal
line, got scores in the red zone. I mean, the one where they started at the 50,
he led two touchdown drives, right? Because it was the, they scored so quickly with two plays
on the first one that they actually gave them another drive to keep practicing it against the
starters. So yeah, it looked really good. I thought he had really good deep touch on a touchdown to
Ulyas Bentley as long as well as a deep one to Tyler Warren drove the ball over the middle of the
field very well to Westbrookina and to Ash and Doolin his overall awareness against the blitz
and the way that he changed protections out there against Louana Rumo looked really good too so
yeah it looked great did you say what his overall numbers were 20 you have 21 of 27 in here so 21
and 27 and then there was I mean there was a couple of them that could be iffy because potential
sacks but generally six incompletions of what he what he did do
Yeah, and two of those six incompletions were drops as well.
One from Hualey Cox and one from Ashton Doolin.
The Doolin one, I would say that he got grabbed by Mooney Ward, but I didn't see a flag.
So it doesn't count.
Doesn't count.
You know, corners get penalized too much anyway, so that's perfectly fine.
So, yeah, Daniel Jones was just lethal.
So much 11-on-11 work.
And, I mean, again, I've only seen a couple practices of Daniel Jones in his time here with the Colts.
But this was clearly the best.
Like he looked like like a Jared golf out there.
Like he was so smooth and comfortable within the pocket.
It looked like watching like Jared golf highlights with the lions.
So that looked good.
Let's go on the other side here, on the flip side of the coin here.
Anthony Richardson, I would say from the handful, like I've seen like six practices of his since 2023.
So I clearly haven't seen a ton.
But I would say this is probably the worst practice I've ever seen from him in my time.
I don't know how you would rate it.
but it was the two words that came to mind from me were just erratic and sloppy oh and i think that
applies to the second team offense in general not just richardson uh but especially when he was out there
and like when they were trying to do a two minute drill at the end of practice with him uh it was
an absolute disaster so if you want to get into the numbers and stuff jick like be my guest here
yeah statistically this was his worst day four of 12 which is like 30 something percent
completions. But just the accuracy was not there. He continues to throw a ball's high. Got another
interception today because of it. He's thrown a couple interceptions during camp during 11 on 11s,
throwing high to 5 foot 9, 5 foot 10, Deon Burks out of his range where Berks tips it and then a
corner comes and picks it out of the air. This one over the middle of the field where if you throw
it high over the middle of the field, you're not retaining possession of the ball. Right. So that was another
one, you know, took a million sacks, like just not getting rid of the ball. I don't know if it's
not seeing things in his progression or just what have you, but just sacked so many times there.
Just there's just no rhythm to the offense when he's out there. And it's, it's pretty
concerning to see for his personal development just because it does seem like arrested
development. It's almost like in 2023 when he was a rookie, like the era was.
going up and then the shoulder injury happened and it's like everything stopped at that point yeah i thought he
you know he's not been terrible all throughout camp i thought this was his worst practice but it does seem like a
step back from last year when him and daniel jones were duking it out to be the qb one
come to find out like jones always was going to have the advantage there but i definitely thought he
looked a you know a bit better last year yeah and also another note too he had another drop snap uh this time
under center. From what I saw, and I wasn't directly looking at Dalton Tucker's hands,
so maybe Dalton Tucker spun it weird or something. But to me, I'd say like that's probably
more on the quarterback than the center. Like unless he just missed his hands, I think Richardson
just pulled his hands out too quick and dropped it. And it actually was recovered by the defense.
So that would have been another turnover as well. And that can sit. That is a consistent issue we've
seen from Richardson all summer and even into spring a little bit. Riley Leonard, though, even though,
even though the stats were better, you have him as 9 of 13.
It wasn't a really good day from Leonard either.
He held the ball so long and he took a ton of sacks as well.
Like I think he took like four or five sacks.
And he would just check the ball down a lot too.
Like I think he only pushed the ball past 10 yards maybe once in his 13 attempts.
A lot of the other ones were just to running backs or Coleman Owen on like drag routes.
He also threw a bad interception.
So while I would say Leonard had a better day than Richardson, I wouldn't say it was like a banner day for it by any means.
No.
And I just, when I saw his performance, you know, you had had a couple adjectives for Richardson.
I would say timid and unsure for Leonard.
There was one play where Anthony Gould has an end-breaking route and he's open.
Like you throw him the ball with a little, you know, lead him a little bit and that's going to be a big game.
did not pull the trigger and he was looking at him the entire time.
I don't know if he was just apprehensive because he thought a corner was going to come jump it or what,
but there were plays there to be made that he just was not willing to make.
And like you said, it was a ton of dump-offs.
A lot of running backs get in action, a lot of receivers who run short routes like Dionne Burks getting action.
And he tried to feed the ball to Dionne Burks on a play right into the teeth of the defense.
And Austin and GK was right there to snatch your way.
Yeah.
So it was just, again, like Leonard.
I would say was slightly better.
I think they got around the same amount of run in this practice.
It was just not a banner day for either guys.
So to quote the famous Tom Moore before we get out of this first segment,
if 18 goes down or I guess if 17 goes down, it's not good and we don't practice not good.
Right.
That's the PG version.
The paraphrase that one.
Coming up, we're going to talk about the rest of the offense,
like two veteran wide receivers building up that chemistry with Daniel Jones.

All right, welcome back, everybody.
We are talking game.
They're not game.
Day number seven of Indianapolis Colts Training Camp.
It was their annual night practice.
I'm sure a lot of you watching were out there with us last night.
It was great to see.
It's always a great event.
You know, the end with fireworks and everything makes it really easy to hear
during press availability afterwards as well.
But before we dive into some of the other offensive standouts,

All right, Zach, so we talked all about the passing game here.
We talked about the quarterbacks, but, you know, obviously guys had to be out there catching
the ball.
So who stood out to you?
Yeah, I mean, I think when you look at the first team, Ash and Duelan and Nick Westbrookicane
really did pop.
Now, they got pretty much all the run with the ones.
I think Anthony Gould got in there a little bit for Westbrokechina on times.
But for the most part, it was those two guys on the outside with Josh Downs in the slot.
and I thought they looked pretty good.
I mean, Westbrook, Kina had five catches, I think, on five targets.
Dooling, it was five catches on like eight targets, but they both had a touchdown.
They both excelled at their typical things with Westbrook and Kina doing better in the contested situations.
Dueling on more of those like run away from them routes.
But also, again, that nice touchdown catch he had towards the end of practice, toe tapping in the back of the end zone to complete that like two minute drill that he had too.
so yeah i thought these guys looked really good out there um again i'm not trying to pump them up and be like
okay wide receiver is great like no but i think like if you get say a keenan allen in here right
which we've talked about so much this offseason having those guys be your rotational wide
receiver four or five i think is outstanding but even if you don't get them in here like them
rotating at three depending on the situation i think can work i don't think that they're going to be
high target guys so i think they can work there uh duelen's almost exclusively even running with
the first team as well. I don't think he's really a special teamer this year. I think he's an
offensive player first. So those are my biggest takeaways. Like those two guys certainly had good
practices. Yeah, without a doubt, with with dueling, you can always, without the coaches telling you
what they're thinking, you can always see it in their actions and who is playing when and where and how
much. Doolin, I mean, you know me. I'm a nerd. I will I will chart every special team snap. He has
only played special teams from what I've seen really as a significant role as a returner in the
kickoff rotation which even still he may not maintain that this year yeah last night he didn't
get a snap in the return game no gunner like he's i don't want to say he's being wiped clean from
special teams but he is no longer all pro special team or ashton dula this year that's not the
plan for him all pro in other ways this year sure sure sure sure so uh yeah he is i've not seen him
with the second team at all.
He's ran exclusively with the first team.
So that kind of tells you everything you need to know.
I think the third receiver spot is comfortably Ashton Doolins.
Shane would never come right out and say it until it's like the regular season,
but you can tell with the actions of the coaches.
Nick Westbrook cana, though, I do hope they find a role for him.
Now, something he's been able to do throughout his career.
Is he a consistent, well-rounded receiver that's going to go out and get 80 balls for 1,000 yards
and 10 touchdowns, no, not all those things together.
But he's a big-bodied guy with decent straight-line speed who, you know, he can win a bit
downfield.
But I think his frame and his strong hands is what's really going to benefit the Colts the most.
And the touchdown he had was just kind of like on a desperation thing along the side,
the boundary in the end zone.
I think he's going to be able to do that.
Like use his big frame to shield guys away, long arm, strong hands.
like I think the Colts might benefit most having him on offense in the red zone.
Yeah.
And again, he's always been a touchdown score.
He had like nine touchdowns for Tennessee two years ago.
I definitely feel better about Westbrook Aquina now than I did when they signed him because of
the sour taste of catching 11 balls for a putrid dolphin's offense last year.
He completely disappeared and was supposed to have a big role than he did.
But I think he is showing that he should be much more impactful.
than what he was able to do in Miami.
Yeah, for sure.
Let's talk a little bit about running backs here.
I will say with Seth McGowan, you know, a lot of I was like hearing a lot of you guys hype
them up throughout these practices.
And I think just seeing it on the field made me understand it a little bit.
He didn't do anything like special last night, but he just looked steady, right?
Like every ball that was thrown his way, he caught it like easily.
Like there was no like fighting the football or anything like that.
Running the ball very smooth, getting his legs moving and moving forward.
like I totally saw the Seth McGowan hype that you guys have been talking about recently.
But the big star from last night, Ulyis Bentley, a guy that we have been on all offseason
as like our type of camp darling, he had two just absolutely great standout plays,
a long touchdown reception from Daniel Jones on a wheel route.
And then a few plays later with the second team, he stayed out there with the second team.
Riley Leonard found him in the flat for like a two-yard pass.
He cut back inside and made a couple of.
linebackers miss and worked up field and it turned into a 42-yard touchdown.
So yeah, Ulyas-Bentley, like, look, I like it more than DJ Giddens right now, I think.
Like, and maybe it's because we have, I haven't seen Giddens out here.
And maybe if he gets back here by this weekend, I can change that opinion.
But I was already kind of like pretty lukewarm on Bentley coming in, like pretty feeling good
about him coming in.
And he had a great night last night.
Yeah, he didn't.
Again, I think guys like that being able to adapt and perform at a high level with multiple
quarterbacks is always a big deal.
Creating your own yards is a big deal.
And he kind of, I mean, he snuck his way into early season involvement.
I think he played two snaps against Miami in week one last year.
Special teams, I think, was something that kind of was a saving grace from and got him in.
For him to be like really performing well on offense, you know, he's getting an opportunity.
Because Jonathan Taylor doesn't do a.
full workload in practice like during the 11-11s they they see what they want to see from him
and they take him out giddens not being out there it really was heavy on the mcgowan and the ulysses
bentley yeah and he answered that very well and i would like to definitely see more of him moving
forward yeah for sure one more note i want to throw out here and you guys can if you're a pessimist
you can take it one way if you're an optimist you can take it the other i'm just going to throw it
out there before we get to our final segment i thought jalen travis looked really good in past
protection, especially with Laotu Latu being the main guy against him.
Again, just tossing it out there.
You guys can analyze it however you want.
But I thought Jalen Travis looked really good in pass protection last night as well.
Coming up, we're going to talk about the rest of the defense and how one linebacker
had the practice of his life last night.
We're going to talk about all that here in just a moment.

play ball and swing for the fences at bandul an official partner of the MLB.
All right, one more ride for this episode, guys.
We're going to talk about defense and begrudgingly for Zach a little bit of special teams.
Zach, we talk about a lot with the offense and the quarterbacks.
There were some fireworks on the field there.
But defensively, Shane Stuyken declared the defense to winner.
Like basically the offense and defense, first team, second team, and developmental period,
they were going toe to toe based on the coach's own scoring system throughout the night.
Stuyken declared the defense the winner of the whole evening.
So what really stood out to you?
Yeah.
So I think the second team defense was pretty dominant overall where the first team offense
versus first team defense was pretty evenly matched in terms of the blows that they were
throwing each other's way.
But second team defense was kick and butt the entire night.
Jalen 2a and a lowow had a couple sacks, Bryce Betcher, a few sets.
sacks one of better sacks did come against the first team so that was impressive at a time you
out of bore a couple sacks and pressures uh so that second team offensive line and the second team
quarterbacks were struggling against uh against this pass rush uh i thought that was pretty good to
see um overall though like yeah i think the biggest standout that we have to talk about is austin
jke yeah right like austin ojke a guy who got some run on defense i think he got almost 200 snaps on
defense last year um quite a bit and then ton on special teams
as well. Yeah, so Ajika is a guy who's been in the system now going into his second year,
and we're sitting here all hyped up about the rookies and, and a free agent signing,
Akeem Davis Gathe, Jalen Carly's what he could be, and Ajik is the one who had the big,
like the first huge standout practice of the linebacker all summer.
Yeah. Ajiq had a big time, like impact moment on Richardson's interception. He
drifted back into the deeper hook zone, which forced the high throw and then Mackay Blackman's
when he finished it for the interception. And then on,
on Riley Leonard's interception, he's the one who jumped the route and got that pick himself.
So he basically had two forced turnovers with his play.
And he had some great moments.
Now, he did get juke down and he leases Bentley's touchdown.
So he was the victim of a big play against.
But like when you have two superstars in camp like Bentley and Ajika, like, you know,
they're going to have to go head to head eventually and sometimes you'll lose to a star player
like that, right?
So it's tough.
But no, Ajika had a really good day.
And, you know, he's kind of trying to prove that he's more than a special.
teamer and if he stacks days like this then who then yeah I think that he certainly could be yeah
I think he already makes the team because like the you know louisnerumo and those guys James
betcher they seem to trust him a good bit so I think he's already got a spot on the team but doing
stuff like this I mean that might earn him a consistent role on defense in a group that's already
pretty crowded like the other day I saw I'm playing dime linebacker and I was like that's kind of you
know they got other guys you might want to try out there but they really like him for that
spot. So he also had a really hard hit on one of the running backs. So big day for a GK overall.
We talked briefly about the defensive lineman, but I just continue to be impressed with
like Jalen Tumolo and Attaima at Bawaray, those guys continue to do nice things. Michael
Clemens is someone who is like, fine. You know, like Jets fans are pretty eager for him to get
out the door. You and I liked him from his upside coming out of Texas A&M, but can admit he's done
nothing in the NFL. But like he's made some nice plays as well. I had a TFL with two a
low-ow. Got a sack as well. Woden has made some nice plays. So very encouraged by this
defensive line. And Arden Key, I'm still going to be skeptical about if he winds up being like the
starter. But he's got some really good pass rush reps really throughout camp. And I think you saw a little
bit of that tonight or last night as well. Yeah, no, for sure. And a couple more notes on like the
starting defense before we get more to like the nitty gritty of like the bottom of the roster guys.
Who played well.
Sauce and Mooney still look really good at outside.
Like Daniel Jones had a good day, but I don't think that came at like, you know,
poor play from Saucer movie.
They both had a pass breakup.
They both had really good moments.
You could tell on like there was one play in particular that Jones was certainly gearing up
to throw a deep shot to Westbrookina and saw that sauce was just all over him.
And he backed away and threw a checkdown to Jonathan Taylor instead.
He was like, yeah, I'm not doing that.
So there is still good play from them.
Cam Taylor Britt,
I thought was moving really well out there, and he was getting a lot of run as like a dime corner
and also as like the back up nickel with the second team.
So I thought there was some good moments from him as well.
Bryce Becher had a couple good moments with the first team as well, including a sack on Daniel Jones.
So there were some good moments from the starting defense.
Like I really do think starting defense for starting offense was a bit more back and forth
than what Jones's stats would really say from last night.
But yeah, starting defense overall, I thought looked really solid.
But one more like reserve player we have to talk about Jake with like the second and third team.
Trey Washington had a really good day last night.
Yeah.
And he it's it wasn't his first good performance at camp.
Yeah, he had a couple pass breakups.
I've seen some people say he had up to three.
We had him with two last night, including one in that two minute drill against Richardson late in the practice.
I think he was covering Will Mallory on that one.
Yeah, he's looked good.
And he's had to fill in and play a little bit more with the second team than maybe any of us would have expected.
and I think he played really well last night.
It just looks really solid and sturdy, in the right position, gets his hand on the football.
We know that they like him for special teams too.
That's why they had him in here last year and why he got called up to the roster a couple times.
So that's a type of guy who's a sneaky option to make the team, I think.
Like if they keep five safeties, which I don't know if they're going to, but if they do,
I think he could be that fifth guy.
I was going to say, I think if they go five, he's probably my pick over like Juanier Thomas and Daniel
Scott.
Right.
He's just,
so last year he was running pretty exclusively with the third team and the
developmental team.
I've seen a lot more with the second team this offseason.
I think,
obviously we know they want Woller.
I think Jonathan Owens has really worked his way into not like a vital piece of the team,
but like I really think they have big plans for Jonathan Owens.
So after that,
I think Trey Washington is a guy that they've been patient with.
They really liked him last year.
He had an interception on the first day of camp,
but I think he had a pass breakup or two the other day as well.
So he's been very active.
Like a really stocky, sturdily built guy that can kind of come lay the wood as well.
So he's kind of versatile.
So, yeah, let's see.
Should we get to kicker now?
Like, do you have any more defenders you want to talk about before we talk about what we're all here to, you know, kickers?
Like, no.
It's the best battle and matchup of the entire summer.
Mackay Blackman, we already said he had interception.
He also had a pass breakup later in practice as well.
But okay, get to kicker now.
I mean, hey, they missed some tonight.
So I guess I could I could laugh a little bit about some misses.
Yeah, they did.
You know, Blake Groupie is finally human.
He missed his first two.
Now, I've been keeping stats going back to spring because we watched them kick once or twice.
I know TAs in mini camp.
He's now like 25 of 27, Groupie is.
He missed from 53 and 61, I believe.
Yep.
uh,
Schrader is like 19 of 27.
I think he's,
I don't think he's at any perfect days.
He was seven of 10 last night.
He missed like 43 and 51 and 60, I think.
So whatever that was.
So yeah,
the kicking competition,
I think is still going well.
I think Blake Rupy has comfortably established himself as the leader there because
he only just now missed his first couple.
And when you're talking about how it looks and where,
It's going through the uprights and the leg talent.
Like Blake Groupie is a tiny human being, but he packs a punch in those kicks, man.
Like he is, I think he's a really good kicker legitimately.
Yeah, the only note I had, and I kind of refute you just a little bit here, is when they tried their 61,
and I don't really care about a kicker missing 61, kicker should never be trying a kick above 60 yards.
That means you fail as an offense if you're letting your kicker kick from that far,
or it's the end of the half or something, right?
but on shredor 61-yard attempt he barely missed left and hit the post and he had enough distance
where that probably would have gone in from like 68 right in terms of distance groupie missed by about
five yards short on his 61 he just did not get it cleanly at all yeah it almost felt like he
kicked the grass first like I don't think he got a good good boot on yeah he had the right accuracy
it just was not even close distant wise so we'll keep an eye on the kicker battle going forward
it does seem like Groupie has a lead.
Other special teams notes, I mean,
Jonathan Edwards still gets like the first gunner reps out there.
And I think he's clearly going to be one of the gunners.
They keep trying Jalen Jones out there with him,
but I don't know if he's going to make the roster.
Westbrook Aquina and Cam Taylor Britt, Mackay Blackman,
they all keep getting a lot of snaps as well with Gunner.
So we'll see where the gunner race really goes.
I would still probably bet Westbrook Aquina gets, gets one of them.
But Blackman or Taylor Britt can make some sense as well alongside,
Jonathan Edwards. Thank you guys for making Lockdown Colts your first listen today and every single day.
