Starting point is 00:00:00 The Indianapolis Colts roster cut down continues as the team has made five more moves ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Let's get to it. You are locked on Colts. This is your daily podcast covering your Indianapolis Colts, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Today's show is brought to you by GameTime. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONNFL for $20 off your first purchase. That is last-minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed. Today, I'm Zach Hicks, joined by the sound of silence. Yes, it is just me today on this solo episode of Locked On Colts. You know, Jake does this quite a bit on here, so I figured I would give it my try here and try to do a whole solo episode for you guys. Just me breaking down some of the roster moves that the Colts have made today, and then we're
Starting point is 00:01:15 really going to dive into this Jonathan Taylor situation yet again. I know we can't ever get away from this Jonathan Taylor situation, but we're going to talk about how it is nearing its final conclusion coming up here on the Tuesday's deadline. You guys are listening to this on Tuesday. So yeah, you guys will probably be having some good news or maybe upsetting news, however you want to take it come Tuesday deadline here. And then at the very end, we're going to talk about the Colts running back room without Jonathan Taylor and potential moves they could make to add more bodies into that room. But first, getting off with the news and notes and talk about some of the roster moves that
Starting point is 00:01:50 were made today. I'm recording this on Monday at 7.25 p.m. So knowing my luck, there will be a move here at 7.30 p.m. And then I'll record this whole episode and you guys will be hearing it. And I'll just put like a little asterisk in the in the in the comment section or the notes or something like that saying this happened after I recorded. But as of right now, the Colts made five roster moves on Monday, five roster moves. Again, just the five that I know of. They released wide receiver Rashad Perryman, released wide receiver James Washington and then they waived Donovan Mouton
Starting point is 00:02:25 undrafted free agent out of Houston waived Dakota Shepley a center and then obviously waived Caleb Samson as well defensive tackle who is undrafted free agent as well now when we're looking at these five moves there's nothing too crazy about them obviously we're looking at the wide receiver room with Rashad Perryman and with James Washington those are two guys that you know as of a couple weeks ago we thought they could have factored into this wide receiver battle for wide receiver five but it looks like it's going to come down to Omari Rogers, Jawan Winfrey, DJ Montgomery which is a really great thing to hear there love that DJ Montgomery is getting getting the. And then obviously Mike Strawn, who probably has that inside track to the spot. But who knows right now? He's still dealing with
Starting point is 00:03:09 an injury. Those other two veterans have been playing well, and D.J. Montgomery's played really well as well. So yeah, we could see what the Colts do with the wide receiver spot right there. Now those other three waived players, Donovan Mooton, Dakota Sheppard, and Caleb Sampson, they just did not have the greatest offseason. Mouton was clearly at the very bottom of the linebacker depth chart, really never had a shot at cracking the top group at all or cracking this roster because players like Saguna Luby, Grant Stewart, JoJo Doman were just outplaying him throughout camp. So no surprise with that one.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Dakota Sheppard, a center, just never really established himself whatsoever in the preseason, was really beat out by Wesley French as the third string center. And even with the injury to Danny Pinter, Dakota Shepley just still didn't do enough this offseason to make the team. And Caleb Sampson is another player where, again, it just, it came in numbers game. McTelvin Aguim was playing better than him. And obviously the other young guys like Adetomi Adebore was out playing him. So another guy where it makes sense to wave there. But again, those are the five roster moves I've got today. If you guys are listening to this and another one
Starting point is 00:04:20 has happened, I will put a note in all the show notes here. But that's what I have right now. Another bit of news that we did not cover on yesterday's show, even though it was kind of reported yesterday, but I wanted to make sure you guys got this information because it feels really relevant to this Colts season and just relevant with the injury status of this entire team. Nate Atkins, a good friend of the show over at the Indy star reported or just tweeted yesterday. I don't know if it was actually like a report from him, but he did tweet yesterday that tight end Jelani Woods was dealing with a
Starting point is 00:04:55 torn hamstring throughout all training camp. So I guess he had heard it back in the spring. I don't know if it was torn back in the spring or what, but it was hurt back in the spring. I don't know if it was torn back in the spring or what, but it was hurt back in the spring. He re-injured it here in August, and that ended up being a tore hamstring. Head coach Shane Steichen said he's hopeful the tight end is back sooner rather than later. But honestly, when I hear a tore hamstring, I'm not really expecting that to be sooner rather than later. Maybe it's not like a complete tear or anything like that. We don't have like the full information on it, but yeah, with the torn hamstring, I would assume that he could be a player where, you know, when you're looking at this roster cut down day and looking at some of
Starting point is 00:05:33 the ways that you can maneuver this roster, you could see a Jelani Woods maybe being an IR candidate. Now, injured reserve has changed quite a bit here in the last couple of seasons, ever since the COVID season in 2020. Inj and PUP list and all these things have changed quite a bit. So now the way it is with injured reserve is when you put a player on that list, they are to miss four weeks at a minimum. And they can come back at any time after that. You know, you can just designate them to return and then they have a 21 day window to come back. I believe it's a 21 day window to come back once you designate them to return. And then they have a 21 day window to come back. I believe it's a 21 day window to come back once you designate them to return. In the past, you could only designate
Starting point is 00:06:10 one player to return from IR the whole year. But now there is a lot more flexibility with that. You can put 50 players designated to return as long as they're all on the active roster when you put them on IR, the active 53-man roster after cut down day. So I'm not saying Jelani Woods is destined for that, but I think you could look at it that way with the tour hamstring. He could certainly be an IR candidate. So that's a little bit concerning. I'm glad Nate was able to shed some light on that because the Colts tight end room has
Starting point is 00:06:43 been kind of beat up this offseason. And Jelani Woods has missed a great part of the August practices, I guess, with that torn hamstring. But again, as of right now, guys, we don't have too much news and notes here with the roster moves and just the overall news with the entire roster. I do think, again, Rashad Perryman and James Washington are two veterans that the Colts have released. Neither of those players have to go through waivers because they are vested veterans. They've played enough time in the NFL to where they don't have to go through waivers and get claimed by somebody else. So when you see those two players getting released this early, it's kind of the Colts doing them a favor and being like, okay, go see if you can get on with another
Starting point is 00:07:22 team right now. But also on top of that, like a, you know, hey, we have some roster turning to do. We don't dislike you guys at all. You know, you guys could come back in some capacity to the practice squad or get signed back right after the cutdowns and stuff like that. But they have more flexibility with those type of players than they do with a Donovan Mouton or Dakota Shepley, Caleb Sampson, or like we talked about yesterday, like Emila Keyore. Like those guys, they have to go through waivers and you risk losing them every single time you cut them. But the veteran players, again, like Kenyon
Starting point is 00:07:55 Drake falls into this as well. There are players that you could bring back at any time. They're not just gone, you know, in going through waivers the second you cut them. It's like how you would release a veteran throughout the season. So I don't know if we've seen the last of both these players. I think if there are injuries throughout the year and some of these other guys they like don't make it to the practice squad or don't make it on the roster, then we could see a Perryman or James Washington back. But I think they look good in limited time this offseason.
Starting point is 00:08:22 I don't think either of them performed horribly. So we'll see. We'll see if they if they come back to the roster at all, but good. Coming up, guys, we're going to dive right back into this Jonathan Taylor saga, hopefully for the last time. I'm sure when we have more news on it later today, when you guys are listening to this, we'll dive into it again, but for now, we're going to dive into it one more time before the big deadline here on Tuesday. Starting point is 00:10:28 I know that this news day is going to be crazy here on Tuesday with all the waiver wire stuff happening, potential trades, claims, obviously the whole Jonathan Taylor saga. We'll be right here on Locked On Colts talking all about it, especially again that Jonathan Taylor thing happened.
Starting point is 00:10:44 So every day, make sure you tune in to Locked on Colts wherever you listen to your podcast, because we're going to be coming at you guys hot and heavy later today. All right, so diving into segment two on today's show, we're talking about Jonathan Taylor. Yes, yet again, it's Jonathan Taylor time on the Locked on Colts podcast. Look, I don't love talking about this. We've talked about it a million times at this point on the Locked Out Colts podcast. Look, I don't love talking about this. We've talked about it a million times at this point on the show, and I have been a very vocal critic of just constantly having the same conversation. But because this is potentially the final day we have to deal with it,
Starting point is 00:11:17 like, again, you guys are listening to this Tuesday morning, we will have news on whether Jonathan Taylor will be an Indianapolis Colt come, what, 4.30 when the deadline comes? Come 430, we're going to know whether he's getting moved to reserve pup lists and staying on the Colts, whether he's going to be activated on pup lists and staying with the Colts, whether he's being traded, whatever the heck is going to happen, we're going to know by 430 today when you guys are listening to this. So, yeah, we're going to know by 4.30 today when you guys are listening to this. So yeah, we're
Starting point is 00:11:45 going to finally get some stuff on it. So I kind of want to run down a little bit of the recent news we've gotten, why the Colts are going to wait until like right around that 4.30 deadline, and kind of what we can expect from the Colts and from potential suitors in this potential trade here. So first, Stephen Holder, our Colts beat guy for ESPN, did update a little bit on the situation. It wasn't like the craziest update in the world, but he did mention in his update for ESPN that a second team has emerged in the negotiation. I don't want to speculate too much on which team I think that is now. You know what? I might speculate a little bit. You know, I, you know, it's my solo podcast. Jake can't, can't hold me down here and tell me not to talk.
Starting point is 00:12:32 I feel, I feel like it could be the Rams. I know that's kind of where a lot of the guessing game has placed as like that second team. The Rams are the type of team that doesn't shy away from making big trades. And obviously, Sean McVay would love a running back like Jonathan Taylor. So I'll speculate it's the Rams, even though, again, I don't like to speculate too much. But Justina Anderson also mentioned that the suitors are prepared to make a market contract offer to Jonathan Taylor. Now, that might be an agent leaking that to Justina Anderson being like,
Starting point is 00:13:07 hey, if you're a team that's trying to make an offer, potentially putting together an offer, make sure you're giving Jonathan Taylor a market contract. I don't know what a market contract is right now for running backs. I mean, if you're going off of the recent market for running backs, it's what, $11 million to $12 million a year, which we don't think that's what Jonathan Taylor is going to accept. I don't know if maybe he'd accept that somewhere else compared to Indianapolis, but I feel, I feel like I'd be shocked if he would take an 11 to $12 million contract at this point per year. Maybe if you give him like five years on it, he would take something like that. But I'd be shocked if that's what he takes. So is a market contract offer $14, $15, $16 million a year? Maybe. Maybe. Your guess is good as mine with that. But you sent Josina Anderson did say the Steelers are prepared to
Starting point is 00:13:56 make that market contract offer. It just remains to be said what that market contract is. So the two updates we got from them are there is a second team emerging in the negotiation. And obviously the first team is Miami Dolphins. I'm going to guess that second team is the Los Angeles Rams, but it could be a number of other teams. All we really know of all the teams that kind of showed interest are the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos are out. So that leaves, you know, I've heard that the commanders have looked into it. I've heard that the Eagles have kind of looked into it, but I'd be shocked if they were the other team.
Starting point is 00:14:31 I think the Rams make the most sense, but again, we'll see. We'll see, guys. A lot of we'll see on this podcast here right now. But Ian Rapoport also spoke on the subject because this is the hottest bit of news in the entire NFL right now, which is, you know, little old small market Indianapolis is just getting all the headlines right now.
Starting point is 00:14:51 He and Rappaport said that he feels like it's likely that Taylor is traded on a segment on the Pat McAfee show. Obviously, that's me paraphrasing here. You can go over to the Pat McAfee show and see the clip on their podcast or even the clip on YouTube and Twitter is out there. But he said that he feels like it's likely Taylor gets traded at this point. The Colts get a fair and competitive offer. He feels like the Colts will take it at this point because that relationship has just soured beyond belief. Obviously, we've talked about it in length on this show a bunch of times, but I would be very, very shocked if Jonathan Taylor plays another snap for the Indianapolis Colts. I do think it's extremely likely he does get traded today.
Starting point is 00:15:34 And again, if he doesn't get traded, I think he'll sit out as long as he can and try not to play. And then when he does come back, he'll try to get traded again. I don't know. It could be even uglier if he doesn't get traded. I think the thing that makes the most sense for both sides right now is just move him to the best offer, whether that's a second round pick and some change, whether that's a conditional first round pick and you're happy with that. I don't know what it's going to be, but at this point, it makes the most sense to just move on, take what you can get, and start focusing on the future with Anthony Richardson.
Starting point is 00:16:09 So it sucks. It really sucks. Like we said on yesterday's show, I never would have expected the situation to get as bad as it's gotten, but it is. We can't just sit here and deny how bad it is right now. So, yeah, I think I think I'm with Rapcore on that, that I think it's extremely likely Jonathan Taylor gets traded. You know, I know we've been saying 50 50 the last couple of weeks, but it probably feels closer to 85 15 that Jonathan Taylor is going to get traded again. The Colts aren't just going to give him away. But if they have a somewhat competitive offer, like I think, I think this one gets done. And one more note that I really wanted to make on this segment here, because we're talking about this whole situation, we're talking about the new updates. Now, some of you guys are thinking like, why not just trade them right now? I'm sure a couple of
Starting point is 00:16:56 you guys are thinking that. Why not just trade them right now, get it over with, get them off the team and, and just start fresh and get and get this whole saga behind us. And as much as I would love that, you guys know, I would absolutely love that this whole situation to be behind us. It makes a ton of sense for the Colts to wait until like as close as they can get to that 4.30 deadline tomorrow, that 4.30 PM Eastern time, by the way, deadline, it makes the most sense to wait as long as possible because desperation
Starting point is 00:17:25 will kick in eventually for other teams. Obviously, they know the Colts have to make that decision. But as long as you think there's other competitors that are upping their offers and maybe giving Taylor better contracts and stuff like that, that it leads you to be more likely to offer more in your offer as well. I know I said offer a lot there, but it makes it more likely that you're going to up your offer as the desperation kicks in because you know that deadline is coming and you know, more in your offer as well. I know I said offer a lot there, but it makes it more likely that you're going to up your offer as the desperation kicks in because you know that deadline is coming and you know that decision is coming from the Indianapolis Colts and decisions spur or deadlines spur action, deadline spur action. So when it comes to that fourth or
Starting point is 00:17:59 deadline tomorrow, teams will be throwing in their final offers and the Colts will have the most information available. That's really what you want in this situation. The more time you wait, the more information you're going to get. So waiting right up to that deadline is going to give you just the most information as possible. And that's what the Colts are looking for here. So yeah, I don't expect a decision to be made until at the earliest, maybe like noon or one o'clock, uh, when you guys are listening to this, sorry, on Tuesday, I know I keep saying like tomorrow and today and stuff like that, but Tuesday, Tuesday is the day we're talking about here. I do expect the decision to come, you know, again, at the earliest, maybe like one or two on Tuesday. Uh, but the latest being right up at that
Starting point is 00:18:43 four 30 deadline, like it really could come down to like exactly the wire there. That's how close we are with this situation. So again, it sucks. It sucks that it's happened at all. And Jonathan Taylor is most likely not going to play for the Indianapolis Colts again, but we can get excited about draft picks coming back maybe and move on from this entire saga.
Starting point is 00:19:04 But coming up, we're going to talk about the Colts running back room without Jonathan Taylor and what the kind of outlook is for this team at running back with their star player likely being shipped out. All right, guys. So looking at this Colts running back situation without Jonathan Taylor, you know, we're looking at three guys currently on the roster that are likely to make the roster and be contributors this season. And that is Zach Moss, a player that was acquired in the Naheem Hines trade last year, had a really, really strong couple stretch of games there. He had 76 carries for 365 yards and a touchdown with the Colts. That's just his time
Starting point is 00:19:41 with the Colts, which is good for 4.8 yards per carry. Just a really efficient, effective runner. Doesn't really have the breakaway speed like a Jonathan Taylor, but he's a bruiser between the tackles. He runs through contact and he makes yardage out of nothing. So really valuable player to have there. Then you have Evan Hull, the fifth round pick from this past draft. He didn't have the strongest preseason overall 17 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown you know a lot of those those stuffed carries and stuff like that came on like goal to go situations or like third and one fourth and one now that's not really where he's going to be used in a real football game so you know that's what you have a Zach Moss for and Zach Moss is currently
Starting point is 00:20:22 dealing with his broken forearm so that's why you've seen Evan Hull get a lot of those carries in the preseason. And it hasn't gone super well. So I'm not terribly concerned about the 3.1 yards per carry or whatever that is, 17 into 53. But he's another player to watch, obviously. And then Deion Jackson coming back for his, I think it's his third year with the Colts. He had 13 rushes for 51 yards here in the preseason and a touchdown. Again, not the greatest yards per carry, but a lot of those came on the short yardage runs that Zach Moss is going to be accounting for when he gets back
Starting point is 00:20:56 healthy. So that's the big three we're looking at going into the season. And I know on paper, this does not look like the best trio of running backs because it's not, it really isn't like, I love Zach Moss. I think Evan Holt and Dion Jackson are good players as well. Uh, but it's, it's not, uh, you know, it's not a top 20 unit, probably in the league, probably closer to a bottom five unit. Uh, so that's a little bit concerning there, but I don't think it's the end of the world when you just look at those three guys in general. Again, Zach Moss had a really strong finish to the year last year, was carrying that into a pretty good camp before he suffered his forearm injury, and all signs are pointing to him being back pretty early this year.
Starting point is 00:21:35 We don't know if that's going to be week one. We'll get more updates as the days come closer to that week one game, but it could be as early as week one. It could be week two, week three, something like that, but he'll be back and ready to go then. And then Evan Hole and Deion Jackson, there is some reason to be excited about both those guys. I don't think they're terrible running backs by any means, both good pass catchers, both plenty explosives. So like I said, it's not a top 20, maybe not even a top 25 running back field in the entire league. But luckily when you have a mobile quarterback like an Anthony Richardson, that's just going to dictate spacing and dictate what defenses do so
Starting point is 00:22:09 much because of his ability to run the ball. You don't really need to have the greatest running backs in the world alongside him. I mean, we saw in Philadelphia the last couple of years with Jalen Hurts, you know, Miles Sanders is a good running back. Like, I think he's a really strong running back. But outside of that, it's not like they're surrounding him with Jonathan Taylor type players they're surrounding him with again Miles Sanders a pretty good running back but not great a Boston Scott a Kenneth Gainwell uh Corey Clement has been there the last couple years at Trey Sermon like these are fine you know mixture of running back some pass catchers and Gainwell some bruisersers and sermon boston scott's kind of just a downhill like explosive player like these aren't phenomenal running backs but they were able to have very high yards per carry very high effectiveness
Starting point is 00:22:54 because of that mobile quarterback they're playing alongside we even saw with lamar jackson uh early in his career you know having a gus edwards running for 5.2 yards a carry whatever it was uh during his rookie season or his first season starting so you know like having a Gus Edwards running for 5.2 yards of carry, whatever it was during his rookie season or his first season starting. So, you know, like, I don't think you really need to have that Jonathan Taylor type of running back with an Anthony Richardson. I would love to have one. Like, it's amazing to have one because imagine what Jonathan Taylor with his near 5.0 yards per carry in his career without Anthony Richardson. Imagine what he would do with Anthony Richardson. But unfortunately, that's just probably not going to happen at this point.
Starting point is 00:23:30 I think those three can be effective, but I wouldn't rule out the Colts also bringing in another running back. Obviously, we have talked a couple times on this show about the veteran that is Kareem Hunt being a running back addition that the Colts can make. I know from talking to a couple people, the Colts did extend an offer to Hunt when they had him in for a visit. Now Hunt didn't take it at that time, but I think the, from my understanding of the offer, the offer was kind of like, hey, once we figure out the Jonathan Taylor situation, then this offer is out there to you. So it was like kind of like a, we're not really giving you this offer, but like it's available to you once the Jonathan Taylor
Starting point is 00:24:10 situation is concluded. So if Hunt takes that, we'll see, or if the Colts go a different direction, we'll see. But my understanding is they have kind of wink winked, kind of given him an offer that he's waiting on. He's waiting on to see what's going on with the Jonathan Taylor situation before ultimately deciding to either sign an indie or sign somewhere else or, or see what he's doing. But Kareem Hunt is a, is an option for this Colts team. He didn't have a very good season last year, but he's always been a pretty productive player in the NFL. Again, last year was not great, but he's do it all back.
Starting point is 00:24:44 He's, he's kind of a big bruiser at this point. He's not really the super explosive type, but he's a guy who can get through the hole and fall forward and get you some positive yards. Another notable cut just happened here. Again, I'm recording this Monday night, early in the day, Bam Knight from the New York Jets was released. That's another player who had a couple really good games last year for the Jets. I think he was a 2022 draft pick by them out of, I want to say, NC State. Really solid player, nothing like special there, but a solid player they could add to this running back room. And then obviously, again, there's going to be other potential cuts that the Colts could be looking at
Starting point is 00:25:20 across the league when it comes to running back. I mean, teams are going to be cutting running backs that make it on other teams and do positive things all day. That's just what happens with the running back position right now. There's going to be productive players cut, and the Colts could definitely jump on there and add a fourth running back to this trio that we have, aside from Jonathan Taylor at the moment. Outside of that, again, in the trade itself, we could see the Colts adding a running back back to the team. If you look at the Rams and Dolphins, which are again, just me presuming those are the top two teams in this arms race for Jonathan Taylor. They have a couple running backs that could intrigue the Indianapolis Colts. You know, just looking at the Rams,
Starting point is 00:25:59 Cam Akers, a former second round pick out of Florida State. That's a player that has kind of been the doghouse the last couple of years with the Rams, which, you know, you don't obviously want to see that, but very talented player who could do some good things here in Indy. And then a Notre Dame guy, which I know you guys all know and love there. Kyron Williams is another option from the Rams. He could be acquired in a potential Rams trade. If the Rams send like a second in Kyron Williams or something like that,
Starting point is 00:26:26 you know, you can get back a young running back and get your pick that you want. So the Colts could go that way. And then if you're looking at the dolphins, the dolphins have a hundred good running backs that could be added back in the trade. Savan Ahmed is at the bottom of the depth chart and he's a good player. Raheem Mostert's a good player.
Starting point is 00:26:42 That's been the league couple of years. Jeff Wilson, he's kind of dealing with an injury right now but you know potentially could be in that deal and then I think Myles Gaskin Devon Devon Arcane or Devin Arcane uh however you say his name I'm sorry I haven't researched too much on on these players but those are plenty of running backs right there that could be just stable additions to the top three we already talked about so my overall point of this is we're looking at this Colts running back room. I'm not expecting any individual player to go over a thousand yards. I'm not expecting this big explosive season by someone, but I think it's
Starting point is 00:27:14 reasonable to say that they could have a good efficient yards per carry. Each one of these guys could with an Anthony Richardson without having like the raw production of a thousand yard season. So you could see stat lines where like Zach Moss rushes 12 times for 55 yards. And Evan hole has three rushes for 30 yards and, and a couple of catches. And Dion Jackson has like four rushes for like 25 yards, you know, nothing, nothing amazing, but just effective rushing where if you look at all of them together, it's like a modest like 19 for like 80 or something or 19 for 85, you know, very, very modest day that you want to see out of your running back room. I think Anthony Richardson opens up the game so much for running backs that you don't really need to have that one superstar. Again, it's awesome to see. I would
Starting point is 00:28:00 love to have a superstar running back alongside Anthony Richardson, but the running back is kind of just a mechanism of this offense. It's not the focal point of a Shane Steichen type of offense. So we'll see what the Colts do without Jonathan Taylor. But again, like I mentioned the last couple segments, we're getting to that conclusion of the Jonathan Taylor saga. We're going to be giving you guys the updates here on Locked on Colts.
