I'm Zach Hicks of HorseshoeHuddle.com, your favorite film nerd over there, and also your favorite co-host here on the LockedOn Colts podcast. Jake is unable to join us today, but we are going to continue our series, our little mini series here on the biggest battlegrounds heading into training camp. So yesterday we talked about the wide receiver battle, the offensive line battle, and the
Starting point is 00:01:10 defensive line battle. Today we're talking linebacker, cornerback, and safety. We're going to kick this one off today though with cornerback because that seems to be the most intriguing one heading into camp. The Colts ended up running it back a little bit at the cornerback position. They did inquire a little bit about some upgrades in the offseason, but ultimately, they decided to bring back veteran Kenny Moore in free agency, bring back all their young players from last year, add a couple of day three picks to the roster, and they're going to roll into camp with this really, really young cornerback group. I mean, aside from Kenny Moore, all these other guys are under 26, under 25 years old. So it's a very, very young group at the cornerback position yet again.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Last year, that kind of bit the Colts in the butt. We'll see if that changes going into this next season. But yeah, I mean, going into camp, the two guys who are solidified, I think, as starters on this team are Kenny Moore and Juju Brents. Juju Brents obviously needs to stay healthy. That's going to be the biggest thing right there for him. Can he build off of the positive showings he did in limited playing time as a rookie and become a full-fledged starter and go, you know, it doesn't have to be all 17 games this next year, but can he go at least, you know, 15, 16 games,
Starting point is 00:02:22 at least get above what he was at last year, where he only played like half of the games as a rookie. So Juju Brents, all, all things, you know, if he can stay healthy, will be a starter for the Colts this year. Kenny Moore, again, long time starter for this team, fantastic player was just rewarded with a, with a nice little three-year contract. Those guys are locked in there for this Colts team. The question now becomes, who is the other starter on the outside for this Colts team? Is it Jalen Jones, a rookie from last season who had a little bit of up and down play? But overall, I mean, for a rookie seventh round pick, you really can't expect much more. He did some really good things for this team, had a couple pass breakups, held down the
Starting point is 00:03:01 fort out there when the team was dealing with injuries. Is he going to be the de facto starter going into camp, or will it be Dallas Flowers, the guy who beat him out in training camp last year, had a good two-game stretch to start the year last year, and then unfortunately tore his Achilles in week three. I think it was actually week four, my bad, week four against the Los Angeles Rams, which ended his entire season. So Dallas Flowers, the guy who won that position in camp last year, did a lot of good things early in the year last year, but then was lost due to injury. Or Jalen Jones, the guy who held it down the entire season and really did some decent things when he was out there.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Which of those guys will start at outside corner? And I think it really comes down to just pick your flavor here with the cornerback position with these two guys, you know, flowers, as long as he comes back healthy from that Achilles injury, he's the better athlete. He's the better playmaker. He has the better eyes and the better vision and the better feel at cornerback, uh, Jalen Jones, you know, a bit more sturdy, a bit more experienced, a bit more physical on the outside. Maybe it doesn't offer the same level of speed out there, but he makes up for it with his technique and with his physicality. So really what
Starting point is 00:04:10 the Colts want to do with that other cornerback position comes down to, again, pick your flavor with those two guys. So I think that'll be a really great battle between those two players. I think it's a better battle than what it looked like going into camp last year, where it was an unproven Dallas Flowers versus a rookie in Jalen Jones. Now it's a year two Jalen Jones versus a Dallas Flowers who, yes, he's coming off an injury, but looked pretty solid in those couple of games that he did start and look like he was taking that big jump. So we'll see,
Starting point is 00:04:38 we'll see how this plays out here. Again, it all comes down to how Flowers is looking post injury by all accounts with, with the way that he's been posting on social media, and you're seeing the movement ability in his drills and stuff like that, he looks like he's back to being Dallas Flowers again, but we have to see it on the field first, obviously. Those are going to be the two guys competing for that other outside cornerback position. Behind them, you've got players like Amir Speed, who was here for special teams last year.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Darryl Baker Jr., who, man, if we're talking up and down season last year I think Daryl Baker Jr. is the is the pure definition of up and down season really really good stretches of play last year but ultimately he struggled to track the ball had a couple really really down moments you know the Houston Texans game in week two was just not a pretty showing for him and the tackling ability just was not on display. But overall, I do think he was a better cover corner than what the Colts had pretty much out of anybody else last year. So, you know, hopefully there's still something there you can work with. And then you've got rookie Jalen Simpson who projects better at safety. He played a lot of safety in college, but the Colts are going to try him out at cornerback because he's roughly 180 pounds.
Starting point is 00:05:45 So they're going to they're going to keep him a little bit down at corner until, you know, something happens where they have to move back to safety. But he's he's a really intriguing player, super athletic, long arms. A guy who started his college career at corner was for transitioning to safety. He's more of a project player, but we've seen project players come into this Colts team and have a bigger roll out the gate than you would expect. You know, Marvell Tell is a rookie. I remember a couple of years back, he got a little bit of run late in his rookie season, despite moving from safety to corner going into that year. So we could see a similar type of situation with Jalen Simpson. I think he's got the athletic traits to make an impact in year one. It's whether
Starting point is 00:06:25 those athletic traits kind of trump the development of a Daryl Baker Jr. or even an Amir Speed, who didn't get many defensive snaps last year, but has been in the NFL system for a little bit longer. So we'll see what that comes out to. I think Simpson can be in play at slot corner as well. I think that'd be a really interesting spot for him. So we'll see where they ultimately land with him going into camp. But talking about slot corner, you got Chris Lamans, who's the only other veteran on this team and played a couple of snaps last year versus rookie Micah Abraham out of Marshall. Abraham played a lot on the outside in college. So again, like Simpson, it could be an outside thing. It could be an inside thing. We're just not sure at this point. His size may be more points towards the slot corner,
Starting point is 00:07:08 but you could put him on the outside as well because of his ball tracking, because of his ball skills, and because of his eye discipline out there. So we'll see who wins this battle here. I am a big fan of Abraham. I think his film is much better than his testing numbers in the pre-draft process. I think he's a guy who is really competitive at the point of attack and gets up there with great ball skills. So Micah Abraham, I think, is one to watch going to camp.
Starting point is 00:07:31 I think he could be a slot guy. He could be an outside guy. Personally, again, I'm going off of what Jake put him on here in the outline, but I do think Abraham, for me, would probably be more of an outside guy and Simpson be more of the slot guy there. So then it would be Simpson versus Lamont and Abraham versus Baker and speed. And I think those are really good competitive battles there. I would lean towards the rookies in both of those battles. But you know, it really comes down to what the Colts are seeing in camp here because because where they took Simpson and
Starting point is 00:07:58 Abraham fifth and sixth round, that's not an uncuttable spot. If other guys beat them out in camp, then you can move on and go from there. But I like the two rookies in these battles. I like Simpson's speed and upside. I like Abraham's ball skills and ability to take the football away. And Abraham kind of reminds me a lot of Isaiah Rogers coming out, just that ability to track the ball and be instinctive in coverage, something the Colts really lacked from their cornerback room last year,
Starting point is 00:08:23 where I think they only had, I want to say they had four interceptions in total from their corners last year, one from Juju Brents and three from Kenny Moore. They need more picks from that position next year. And Mike Abraham could be an impact player from day one in that regard. So that's the cornerback breakdown there. I think I'm going to go with those top four guys as obviously making the roster. And then I'm going to go with the two rookies, rounding out the group as my early, early prediction of the six guys coming out of camp. But we'll see how it goes, obviously, when the pads are on here in July and August. But coming up, we're going to switch over to the linebacker position. Can rookie linebacker Jalen Carley's make a day one impact for this team.
Starting point is 00:09:08 But first, it's a winner. Take all time in the NBA and NHL and Fandles giving you a shot to bring home a big win of your own. Tonight, it's game six of Pacers-Knicks with the Pacers behind in the series 3-2. They are six-point favorites on FanDuel, though, so fingers crossed they're able to force that game seven, just that nerve-wracking game seven there.
Starting point is 00:09:40 We're hoping they can get to that here this year, guys. But visit FanDuel.com slash locked on and make every playoff shot count. FanDuel, America's number one sports book. Already locked on listeners. We're back with our positional preview, our positional battle preview going into Colts training camp this off season. We're talking linebackers now. And, you know, this is a little bit different than corner where corner, we don't know who's going to be that other starter opposite Juju Brents on the outside
Starting point is 00:10:10 at linebacker. We know who the two starters are. And, and I'm saying two starters, because if, if any of you guys listening are too used to kind of the old base defense, the NFL runs, the NFL is a predominantly nickel based league. So when you're talking starters at linebacker, it's now really two instead of three linebackers. There are some sets. Obviously, we're going to have that same linebacker out there. But for the most part, teams are going to be in nickel. You're going to have two linebackers that are starters.
Starting point is 00:10:35 And that's going to be Zyra Franklin and EJ Speed. I mean, these guys are so locked in to being the Colts starting linebackers that they have a podcast together. You don't have a podcast with backup players. You have your podcast with your starters. So Zyra Franklin, EJ Speed are your obvious starters going into training camp here. But who will be that Sam linebacker that comes in? Because last year when we saw what the Colts did when they went to three linebacker sets,
Starting point is 00:10:58 especially late last season when Shaquille Leonard was no longer with the team, they had it very, very matchup-based. They had times where Saguna Luby came in and served more as that backup Mike at times, and then they would move Franklin to more Sam and Speed out to more Will. They had times where they brought in Ronnie Harrison, the veteran safety move to linebacker,
Starting point is 00:11:19 who started off at Will, and then they would have EJ Speed go over to Sam, and then they would have Zyre Franklin over at Mike. So there are ways that they can move around a little bit with that Sam linebacker position and what they can do. But the guys behind those two starters, I mentioned a couple of them just a second ago. Saguna Luby, who is the backup Mike, I think has that inside track to winning that job again, because the linebacker they just drafted is not really a Mike linebacker either. So Saguna Luby has a good shot at making this team. Ronnie Harrison, like I just mentioned, the former safety that moved to linebacker for the Colts last year, did some really good things
Starting point is 00:11:55 at linebacker. Not so great things when you move back to safety due to injuries late in the year, but I do like him as weak side linebacker depth and just ability. Special teams ace Grant Stewart, more of a sandbacker if he ever plays on defense. I believe, you know, this is like a funny fact with him. I believe that he played like nine defensive snaps last year, like meaningful defense snaps. I don't know if he got in at the end of blowouts, but I know for at least the first half of the year, he played like nine defensive snaps and he was blitzed on like eight of them. The Colts only brought him out there for blitzes and just to get him downhill and run into alignment to free up other people for sacks. So Grant Stewart, if he ever plays on defense, is just going to be running straight
Starting point is 00:12:32 and that's perfectly fine. Then you got Cam McGrone, another player who made the team last year, and we'll see if he has a chance to make it yet again this year. But there's obviously more competition with the rookie edition of Jalen Carley's former safety of Missouri. The Colts immediately said they're going to put him at linebacker, has the traits, has the athleticism, has the length to be a good linebacker in the NFL. It's all about when he's going to get his chance. So that's really where I want to take this conversation now is we know who our two starters are. We know it's Zyra Franklin and EJ Speed. We know who some of our contributors are behind those top two starters in
Starting point is 00:13:08 Saguna Luby, Ronnie Harrison, Grant Stewart. We know those guys have certain roles, but how soon do we see Jalen Carley's get into the mix? And do we even see it at all in year one? Because we've seen with this defensive staff, when they have changed safeties to linebackers in recent history they've gotten these guys on the field quickly I mean we saw it with Divine Diablo with the Las Vegas Raiders the greatest name in football by the way but Divine Diablo with the Raiders
Starting point is 00:13:34 moved from safety to linebacker when he got to the Raiders as a rookie Diablo was a third round rookie just for context there but you know still still a rookie. Came out of the gates, had a role in the defense as their weak side linebacker, and then when injuries happened, he became a full-fledged starter for parts of that year that Gus Bradley was with the Raiders. So they had a plan for Diablo, and they got him on the field immediately, and he was a productive player for them. If you're looking for more of a later round type of player, Kyser White, when Gus Bradley and the staff was with the chargers, Kaiser white,
Starting point is 00:14:06 they moved from safety to linebacker going into his second year in the NFL. And he had a ton of snaps on defense. I mean, he started a handful of games at linebacker and now he's, you know, a starting linebacker in the NFL. So this staff knows what they're doing with this archetype of player. They know how to get this archetype of player from safety to linebacker onto the field. It's all about when they're going to get them out there. And I think with Carly's,
Starting point is 00:14:29 you know, there's no rush like there was with Divine Diablo, like there was with Kaiser White with the Chargers. I don't think that there is this major push to get them on the field, but I do think we can be looking at a situation late in year one where, you know, the Colts need more of a pass down presence at their linebacker position later in the season. And a player like Carly's can get out there and cover at a higher level than maybe a Zyra Franklin or EJ speed can. And I'm not saying that those two players are not good in coverage or can't
Starting point is 00:14:57 get better in coverage by any means, but you know, Carly's was just doing this at a higher level in college and was doing it from the free safety position, doing it from strong safety, doing it in more man coverage stuff. I mean, that's just such a different aspect bringing to the linebacker room than Franklin and Speed, who for all their time in the NFL have been linebackers or have been around the box. Even EJ Speed, who played 50 different positions in college, was more so constrained to the box rather than being more of a global type player on defense. So Carly's just brings you more potential, brings you more coverage upside than those two guys do. So it really comes down to when he gets onto the field. And, you know, this Carly's pick could be one for the future. It could be one where you're looking at 2025, because as Jake,
Starting point is 00:15:41 you know, wonderfully put down here in the notes for me, EJ Speed, Grant Stewart, Cam McGrone, and Zaguna Luby are all free agents going into 2025. So it's very possible that Carly's is more of a redshirt player this year, doesn't really get on the field this year, and then you have a plan for him in 2025. But I really do think when you're looking at Carly's on film and you're looking at what he can do as a run and chase linebacker in the run game, as a guy who can cover in man and has good vision and zone uh over the top and and that
Starting point is 00:16:10 projects pretty well to the to the box where he's going to be playing this next year I think it's gonna be hard to keep him off the field I think he's gonna do enough good things in camp and enough good things for this team where you know you're gonna want him out there in year one and he's gonna do some good things for you so I don don't think it's going to be a massive role. I don't think it's going to be, you know, 30, 40, 50 snaps a game or anything like that. But I could see a good 15 to 20 snaps a game that's kind of like that third linebacker on the team over time and really develop that kind of role for the system. So yeah, I think Jalen Carley is going to make a pretty big impact for this team in some regard, whether that's special teams or on linebacker in year one.
Starting point is 00:16:48 And I do think, you know, obviously there's more of a plan for him going into 2025, but I'm excited for his potential here this next year. I think he's going to win out against like a Ronnie Harrison for that week side linebacker job. Again, it doesn't have to be week one, but it could be, you know, week 10 or week 11, week 12. I think Carly's going to find a way into that, that kind of role for this defense and that rookie is going to get some good playing time out there. But overall, when you're looking at this linebacker position, you know, you got your two starters in place. You've got your backup Mike in place. You have a good veteran and Ronnie Harrison, you've got your special teams, Ace and Grant Stewart. And then you've got Jalen Carly's coming up and doing some good things as well. I think Colts linebacker room is pretty solid. And if we know anything about Chris Ballard,
Starting point is 00:17:28 he doesn't miss at the linebacker position. He really doesn't miss at linebacker position. So we can at least all sit here and say, you know what? Jalen Carley's is probably going to be a pretty solid player. If not, you know, an all pro or pro bowl or whatever it's going to be. I'm not trying to put crazy expectations on him, but if we know Chris Ballard, he does not miss when it comes to linebacker and Jalen Carley's is just the
Starting point is 00:17:49 next man up in a long line of linebackers that he has hit on in his time with the Colts, but coming up and we're going to switch gears to the biggest problem child on this Colts roster. And that is the safety position. Do the Colts have enough in-house at safety to roll into this next year, or are they going to have to go outside of house and grab a free agent starter sometime soon? But first, passion, drive, and patience.

We are here talking Colts safety position again, like, like the cornerback position at the, at the top of the show, they have one or half their starters in place. Julian Blackman, it did return on a fairly cheap free agent deal. So Julian Blackman will be the team's strong safety yet again. The real question with this group when you're looking at the starting position is what's it look like at free safety? Who is going to be the free safety
Starting point is 00:19:35 for this team? And as of right now, it's Nick Cross versus Rodney Thomas II, something that nobody really wanted to hear going into free agency or coming out of free agency and coming out of the draft. But with the Colts electing to not draft free safety in this past class or not taking a guy they intend to keep at free safety, those are the two guys that they're going to be rolling into camp with in this free safety battle. Nick Cross, a former third round pick that the Colts traded up for. They obviously have high hopes for him, but it just really hasn't materialized yet in the NFL. They haven't been able to get him on the field enough. They haven't had enough good flashes from him.
Starting point is 00:20:13 But there has been some moments where we've seen some good things. I mean, the interception versus the Steelers was a fantastic play from him. He's had a couple other moments as a third safety where he's made some tackles over the middle where it's like, okay, cool. We see the speed, we see the athleticism, we see what he can do. Let's get him on the field more. And then that final stretch with Julian Blackman out this past season, it just wasn't a great stretch of play for him. I mean, the big touchdown that Juju Brents allowed against the Houston Texans, it looked like that should have been more of a cover four type of coverage where either Cross or Harrison or both should have been getting deep on that, should have been getting their depth. And they left Juju Brents to die on an island against Nico Collins, one of the best receivers in football. So that's
Starting point is 00:20:53 kind of where you're looking at with Nick Cross, where it's like, all right, we're no longer looking at a rookie with him. We're not even looking at a second year player. We're looking at a player going into year three, where this is kind of the time where it needs to be coming together. He's still a really young player. I believe he's only be 23 this season. So, you know, there's still time for him to figure things out. But that clock is ticking. It has to be this year for him.
Starting point is 00:21:15 And he might be the player with the most to gain and the most to lose heading into training camp this year. But he gets a shot. He gets a big shot to take that free safety role. And it comes down to him beating out a player like Rodney Thomas or some of the other players on his roster. For Rodney Thomas, another player from the same draft class as Nick Ross, a little bit of an older player, had a really, really promising rookie season, but kind of tumbled back to earth a little bit this past year. He did have the interception numbers. He's got really impressive interception numbers through two seasons with the Colts.
Starting point is 00:21:46 But overall, the tackling regressed, the coverage ability regressed, his ability in single high regressed. And I think the Colts trust in him kind of regressed late in the season as well to where when it came to that do or die week 18 game last year, they started Nick Cross and Ronnie Harrison, a guy that they moved to linebacker instead of starting him and Nick Cross in that final game. So that kind of says where their trust level is with a player like Ronnie Thomas right now. I do think there is still salvageable parts of him and salvageable parts of his game.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Again, the ball skills are great. He comes with a lot of interceptions and does some good things, but he needs to show more, you know, just completeness in his game. He needs to be a better overall player coming out of camp this year, but we'll see what happens with that, with that camp battle. We'll see if one of those guys can really lock down that free safety role, because if they can't, then you got to go outside of house and, and grab one of these talented free agents that are still out there. The other two guys who are kind of interesting here, or again, it, it comes down to your to your definition of interesting, but Daniel Scott, the rookie fifth round pick from last year's
Starting point is 00:22:50 draft, tore his ACL in training camp last year. I was a really, really big fan of this guy going into training camp last year, and I was really excited to see what he could do. Fantastic athlete, player who played in the box, played up high, played in slot corner a little bit in college as well, did a lot of good things at Cal in college. And I was excited to see what he could do with this Colts team last year, but unfortunately suffered that injury. We'll see what he looks like coming back from that injury, but I do think he's going to be a welcome sight into this camp battle. I don't know if he's going to be much more than that, but I do think that he can be a welcome sight and a welcome body that can compete with these guys and really push them to new heights. So I'm hoping that he can establish
Starting point is 00:23:28 himself as a rosterable player, but also just as a player that can, you know, push these other guys to be even better in camp. And then Trevor Denbo, the grant steward of the safety position, Trevor Denbo has always done some good things for this team as that final safety spot. So we'll see if he can retain his, you know, that special teams role that he's had the last couple of years. But you guys know I love me some Trevor Dembo when it comes to special teams. And if the Colts have room for him, I would love to have him back as a special team or again going to this next
Starting point is 00:23:56 season. At the bottom of the roster, there are a couple other players as well. Marcel Dabo, a player they've had an international pathway system for the last two years, Kendall Brooks and Michael Tootsie. Brooks and Tootsie, the Colts obviously like something about their games, but I don't know if they're real competitors for this spot. But Marcel Dabo is interesting because, again, another fantastic athlete,
Starting point is 00:24:17 a player they've had in their system for two years. It's kind of like the Nick Cross effect, but obviously lesser than what Cross has had because Cross is a former third round pick. Dabo was an undrafted free agent. But with Dabo, they've had him in the system for two years. They've had him around this organization, around the roster. It's kind of make or break for him as well, where it's like, if you're going to end up being anything for this team, it has to be this offseason.
Starting point is 00:24:40 You know, like another year with the International pathway practice squad thing just to amount to no playing time or no not even making any kind of impact on the roster just kind of shows that you know like we tried our best with this but it just didn't work out so for Dabo you know this is really the time for him where it's like you got to put it together a little bit in training camp and earn a spot on this roster or you know it might not be something that ever happens here with the Colts. So Dabo is kind of entering a make-or-break season. Ronnie Thomas is entering a make-or-break season. Nick Cross is entering a make-or-break season.
Starting point is 00:25:12 All these guys are on their last leg right now, and it comes down to what they can do in camp to really solidify their team. Excuse my voice there, guys. I was just having a coughing fit. That wasn't me tearing up or anything like that, I I promise I know my voice is cracking a little bit but yeah Nick Cross, Ronnie Thomas, Marcel Dabo these guys are all entering massive massive off seasons and I'm excited to see what these young guys can do in camp but you know it comes back to the age old question we've had all off season into the draft and now here before we get in a training
Starting point is 00:25:44 camp where it's like Justin Simmons is still out there. Quadri Diggs is still out there. All these other players are still out there. And if the Colts really want to be a playoff team, you know, I think you got to go out and get one of these guys. Again, we've talked about it so much and we've just been drilling this into your guys' heads.
Starting point is 00:26:02 But like, I want Nick Cross to win this job I want Ronnie Thomas to win this job I want them to be worth it for a playoff team you know where are these starters you know it'd be great to have these guys emerge but at the end of the day if you have playoff aspirations you really want to push your chips in it's it's about going to get those other guys who are more playable right now, or maybe that media just, I think are more playable, you know, guys with more proven track record guys who have done more in the NFL in recent years.
Starting point is 00:26:31 I just think, you know, for a team that just has these higher hopes, relying on a random third year breakout from Nick cross or a third year turnaround from Ronnie Thomas is just, it's asking a little bit too much for hoping, you know, and it's hard to put that much hope into those two players when we haven't really seen the complete package from either one of them at this point. So I think just going out there with their 14,
Starting point is 00:26:56 $15 million they have in cap space and throwing it at a Justin Simmons, that makes you a playoff team. That makes you a really well-rounded, solid team that looks like they can make the playoffs. But rolling out there again with a Nick Cross or a Rodney Thomas alongside these young players that you have at cornerback, it just has the recipe for a potential disaster like we saw late last season. So I'm curious to see what the Colts do at safety. Again, if they just roll into camp with Cross and Thomas, I'd be very happy to see one of those guys break out. But if not, I really do think they got to look at a Simmons
Starting point is 00:27:28 or a Quadra Diggs really to fill out this roster. But you guys let us know in the comments what you think. Again, sorry again for the coughing there at the end.
